SIEGFRIED - Chapter 1: Routine - Episode 3

Vane heads a scouting party at Lancelot's recommendation and returns with valuable information. The knights use that intel to form a detailed strategy, but in the heat of battle Lancelot and Percival miss their timing to retreat and find themselves in a desperate situation. However, they manage to escape the crisis thanks to Siegfried's awe-inspiring power.

Vane finishes setting up camp in a flash, and Siegfried, Lancelot, and Percival gather around him.
Siegfried: Oho... Masterful work.
Vane: Y-you really think so? It's an honor to hear such praise from you, Captain Siegfried!
Lancelot: (Nice job, Vane!)
Vane: (Heh... I've gotta make myself useful where I can!)
Percival: Oho...
Percival: (He looks like a common boor, but his work shows a surprising attention to detail.)
Vane: (Ohh, he's looking... Heh, what do you think of that? Lay it on me!)
Percival: Captain Siegfried, should we begin the strategy meeting soon?
Vane: (Aww... Seriously? He's not gonna say anything?)
Siegfried: Yes... But before that, could I ask you to select a scout from out of your units?
Siegfried: I tried asking a number of potential candidates, but none of them are very knowledgeable about this area.
Per his request, Lancelot squares his jaw and offers a proposal to Siegfried.
Lancelot: Er... Siegfried.
Siegfried: Hm?
Lancelot: I'd like to nominate Vane as a scout.
Vane: Huh? M-me?
Lancelot: Vane has experience with expeditions in this area, so I imagine that gives him familiarity with the terrain.
Siegfried: Is that true, Vane?
Vane: Y-yes, sir! It's just as he says!
Siegfried: I see... What do you think, Percival?
Percival: If that's Lancelot's recommendation, then I have no objections.
Percival: However, I think we should ask the man himself whether or not he believes he can accomplish the task.
Siegfried: That's true... What do you say, Vane?
Vane: Y-yes, sir!
Vane: I, Vane, hereby swear to accomplish my mission!
Percival: I'll leave the final decision to you, Captain Siegfried.
Siegfried: Hm... Understood.
Siegfried: Then Vane, could I ask you to form a scouting party at once?
Vane: Y-yes, sir! Right away!
Siegfried: While Vane and his squad are out on reconnaissance, we'll commence our strategy meeting.
Lancelot & Percival: Yes, sir!
As Siegfried and Percival head inside the encampment, Vane remains standing outside in a daze.
Vane: Me? A scout?
Lancelot: You can do this, Vane.
Vane: Lancey! Th-thanks!
Lancelot: There's no reason to thank me.
Vane: Huh?
Lancelot: Just so you know... I didn't suggest you as a scout because we're old friends.
Lancelot: I recommended you because I sincerely believe you can do it. So have confidence in yourself.
Vane: Lancelot...
Lancelot: Good luck out there!
Vane: Right! You can count on me!
Thus Vane sets out on a reconnaissance mission while Siegfried and the others begin planning out their battle strategy.
A short time later, Lancelot and Percival are involved in a deep discussion.
Lancelot: The enemy forces don't seem to be making any major movements at this time.
Lancelot: Once the scouting party returns, shouldn't we strike first and seize the initiative?
Percival: We'll need to take the offensive in order to keep things moving how we want.
Percival: But with the defense holding the territorial advantage, we won't be able to turn the tides strongly in our favor.
Lancelot: That's true... I imagine our enemy will fortify their defenses before we arrive.
Percival: In other words, we'll need a plan to break through their frontlines and crush their defense.
After listening quietly to his vice-captains' debate, Siegfried offers his opinion.
Siegfried: A thorough strategy is obviously essential, but there will always be surprises.
Siegfried: It's important to avoid being preoccupied with tactics so you can make proper decisions on the battlefield.
Lancelot: That's... true.
Siegfried: But there's nothing wrong with your tactics themselves.
Siegfried: Would you let me be the one to break through their frontlines?
Percival: You want to handle it personally?
At that moment, they hear footsteps approach outside the tent.
Vane: E-excuse me! Could I ask for a moment of your time?
Siegfried: You may enter.
Vane: Y-yes, sir!
Lancelot: (Vane! I'm glad you made it back safely!)
Siegfried: Let's hear your report.
Vane nods and pulls a sketch out of his pocket.
Vane: Sir! The location and number of the enemy forces are as indicated here.
Vane: We also took the opportunity to search for terrain that we might be able to use to our advantage!
Siegfried: Oho... Nicely done in such a short span of time.
Siegfried: Now that we know where they stand, we'll be able to devise an even more detailed strategy.
Vane: Thank you for your praise! It's an honor!
Lancelot: (Way to go, Vane!)
Vane: (I did it, Lancey!)
Vane: Um... But it wasn't just me. The rest of the scouting party worked really hard too!
Siegfried: Noted. I'll hear more about their endeavors at a later time.
Percival: Hmm...
(Scouting is an important duty normally handled by one of the most distinguished members of a unit...)
Percival: (This man looks like an utter fool at first glance, but it seems he's quite proficient at intelligence gathering.)
Vane: (Hmm... That red-haired guy looks like he might actually say something this time...)
Siegfried: Now then, let's use this new information to brush up your tactics.
Lancelot: Yes, sir!
All right, Percival, let's polish our strategy to be even more precise.
Percival: Hah. I wouldn't have it any other way, Lancelot.
Vane: (Heh... I feel like I'll just be getting in the way if I stick around.)
Vane: Then... I'll go ahead and take my leave!
Siegfried: Right. Thanks for your assistance, Vane.
Percival: ...
Lancelot: (Nice work, Vane.)
Vane: (Hang in there, Lancey.)
As Vane bows and makes his way to leave, he glances over his shoulder at Siegfried and the others.
Vane: (Someday... I want to stand there too.)
Filled with newfound resolve, Vane returns to his station.
Meanwhile Siegfried and the others use the information he gathered to rethink their plan.
Once their strategy has been ironed out, the knights make for enemy lines immediately and assume their positions on the battlefield.
After all the preparations are in order, Siegfried stands before the knights of the Order to issue some words of inspiration.
Siegfried: The top priority of this mission is to capture the mastermind behind the revolt.
Siegfried: Bear in mind that those who engage in less than chivalrous behavior while carrying out missions will be severely punished.
Siegfried: No matter when or where, we must always battle with the pride of dragons in our hearts!
Siegfried: Together we fight! For the righteous glory of Feendrache!
Lancelot & Percival: For the righteous glory of Feendrache!
Black Dragons: For the righteous glory of Feendrache!
The next moment, Siegfried speeds forward, aiming directly for enemy lines.
Spotting his movements, one of the enemy troops calls out to inform his comrades.
Rebel 1: It... It's Siegfried!
Siegfried: Forgive me, but I'll be passing through here whether you like it or not!
Siegfried: Haaah!
Having reached the enemy camp in an instant, Siegfried leaps over the frontlines, swinging his blade downward.
The sword collides powerfully with the earth below it, sending fissures through the ground.
Rebel 1: Whoa!
Rebel 2: Gyah!
Rebel 3: Urgh!
The rebels are swallowed up one after another as the earth suddenly opens beneath them.
Siegfried: Lancelot Unit! Percival Unit! Stay with me!
Lancelot & Percival: Yes, sir!
Once Siegfried has thrown the enemy into disarray, Lancelot and Percival lead their units in the charge.
Lancelot: Siegfried really is incredible.
Percival: Indeed... I wouldn't want to end up on his bad side.
Lancelot: Hahaha! Truer words were never spoken!
Lancelot laughs and turns to look at Percival, a mischievous smile on his face.
Lancelot: Hey, Percival... What do you say we compete to see who can distinguish himself more in his first battle as a vice-captain?
Percival: Heh... Sounds good to me. I was just thinking the same thing.
Lancelot: All right!
Percival: Let's go!
Lancelot & Percival: Haaah!
As the Black Dragon knights advance with Siegfried in the lead, they are awed by the overwhelming power of their captain and vice-captains.
Black Dragon 1: Whoa... With the captain and vice-captains here, we have this battle in the bag.
Black Dragon 2: Pretty sure there's no reason for us to even be here.
Vane: Hey, you two! Saying things like that is a huge waste!
Black Dragon 2: A huge waste? What do you mean?
Vane: You've been given the chance to witness some amazing warriors in battle. Don't you want to move forward and see them up close?
Black Dragon 1: Huh? Are you serious?
Black Dragon 2: There's no way we can fight on the same level as those prodigies.
Vane: Yeah, that's true!
Black Dragon 1: Wait, what? Are you a complete idiot?
Vane: Well, yeah, I am! I'm an idiot who refuses to look back!
Vane: All I can do right now is stare at their backs...
Vane: But someday, I'll catch up to them! I'll be right there fighting alongside them, just you wait and see!
Black Dragon 1: Oh yeah? Well, good luck with that!
Black Dragon 2: ...
Black Dragon 1: Hey, what are you so quiet for all of a sudden?
Black Dragon 2: Well... I was just thinking maybe I ought to give it my best too...
Black Dragon 1: Huh? You gotta be kidding me. I had no idea you were so naive.
Black Dragon 2: What's that supposed to mean! You're supposed to say something like, "I gotta give my best too!"
Vane: Hey, you two! Don't just stand there, or you'll be an easy target!
Black Dragon 2: Hey... Wait...
Vane: To battle!
Black Dragon 2: W-wait for me, Vane! I'm... I'm coming too!
Vane: Hahaha! Yeah! That's the spirit!
And so the battle continues to change and progress from moment to moment.
Originally the plan had entailed Siegfried breaking through the frontlines, with Lancelot and Percival leading their forces to encircle the rear.
But amidst the confusion of battle, the two vice-captains have been separated from their captain and surrounded by the enemy instead.
Before they know it, Lancelot and Percival find themselves isolated from the other units.
Lancelot: Ugh... I never imagined they'd have so many reserves hidden in the rear.
Percival: Tch... They lured us out by making us think we had the advantage in battle.
Lancelot: Normally we'd have easily realized what they were up to.
Percival: I'm at fault for letting my emotions get away from me.
Lancelot: In that case, I'm just as guilty for failing to stop you.
Perhaps due to their newfound sense of responsibility as vice-captains, they had misjudged their timing to retreat.
Lancelot: It's unlikely we'll be able to break their siege with this poor visibility.
At some point the area had erupted in flames, causing their field of vision to be worsened by the smoke filling the area.
The battle rages around them, making it difficult for them to join with the other units.
Percival: Ngh... Lancelot! I'll carve a path through the enemy forces so you can escape!
Lancelot: Come now, Percival. There you go again, trying to steal the spotlight.
Percival: What do you mean by that!
Lancelot: It was just a joke! Don't get mad!
Percival: You fool! This is no time for jokes!
Lancelot: If it was just us, we might be able to find a way to escape...
Percival: But there's no doubt that our comrades left behind would be annihilated...
Lancelot: And we can't have that.
Percival: Of course not.
Percival: That's why I'm telling you to use that speed of yours to escape and bring reinforcements while I hold back the enemy forces!
Lancelot: If we were only interested in maximizing the number of survivors, your judgment would be correct... But I want to find another way.
Percival: Hurry! There's no time!
Just then, they hear a desperate voice calling out nearby.
Vane: Aaargh! Stay away!
Vane: There's no way I'm gonna bite the dust in a place like thiiis!
Lancelot: Hm? That's... Vane!
Percival: We need to back him up!
Lancelot and Percival are able to rescue Vane and the other knights from the surrounding insurgents.
Lancelot: Vane! I'm so glad you're all right!
Vane: Th-thanks for that... I-I thought I was a goner there for a sec!
Black Dragon 2: Captain Lancelot! Captain Percival! Thank you so much!
Percival: Hey! Why do you have that?
Percival stares at the object gripped in Vane's hands.
Vane: Oh, well... When I saw the enemy trying to steal our company flag, I defended it with everything I had...
Lancelot: ...!
Vane! You did it!
Vane: Huh? Did what?
Confused, Vane lifts the flag into the air without thinking.
Percival: You fool! Don't just carelessly raise the flag like that!
Percival: If you hold it up before we're prepared, we'll be crushed by the enemy!
Vane: Oh, sorry about that...
Percival: (I can't tell if this guy is a genius or a fool...)
Lancelot: All right! Percival and I will hold back the enemy!
Percival: Right! Meanwhile you lot find a location to hoist that flag and assemble our allies!
Vane: Y-yes, sir!
Lancelot: Form a battalion with the comrades you gather and break through this siege!
Black Dragons: Understood!
Lancelot: Now then, Percival. Are you ready?
Percival: Of course! Let's go, Lancelot!
While Lancelot and Percival hold off the nearby enemies, Vane and the others continue to wave the flag desperately.
As they do so, enemies and allies alike begin to make their way toward the flag.
But the might of the enemy is greater than that of their comrades, and they find themselves surrounded once again.
Lancelot: Urgh... This is bad, Percival!
Percival: Lancelot! I can't hold them off any longer!
Vane: Nnngh!
The Black Dragons are overwhelmed by enemy forces. But just as all hope seems lost, they spot a familiar figure.
Siegfried: Haaah!
After blowing the other rebels out of his way, Siegfried hurries over to them.
Siegfried: I made it in time...
All Three: Captain Siegfried!
Lancelot: Why are you here?
Siegfried: Well, I saw you all waving that flag like your lives depended on it...
As the captain stands before his comrades, his battered and bruised figure tells the story of his heroic battles thus far.
Lancelot: So the flag really did become a guide on the battlefield! It's all thanks to Vane!
Siegfried: Is that so... That company flag is the soul of the Order of the Black Dragons. Thank you, Vane.
Vane: No need to thank me! I just happened to have it with me! If I hadn't had my comrades by my side, it would've been crushed!
Percival: Ugh... I knew it was a reckless gamble...
Percival: If you hadn't come running, we would have been in serious trouble, Captain.
Siegfried: Well, I'm here now, so there's no need to worry.
Siegfried: Haaah!
As Siegfried continues to thwart the enemy's attacks, he calmly turns to speak to Lancelot and the others.
Siegfried: Also... I forgot to tell you the most important thing.
Siegfried: The man who emerges victorious is the man who continues struggling until the bitter end.
Lancelot: The man who emerges victorious...
Percival: Is the man who continues struggling...
Vane: Until the bitter end.
Siegfried: Right... And I'll prove that to you right now.
Siegfried: We're pressing forward! Follow me!
Siegfried: Hyaaah!
All Three: Hyaaah!
Lancelot, Percival, and Vane join forces to make their advance, with Siegfried leading the charge.
Together they succeed in escaping from a very grim situation along with a large number of their comrades.
After that, the Black Dragons are able to regroup and suppress the rebel army, thanks greatly to Siegfried's achievements in battle.
His tremendous strength on the battlefield leaves a deep, lasting impression on the hearts of Lancelot, Percival, and Vane.
