SIEGFRIED - Chapter 2: Disaster - Episode 2

Along the way, Siegfried speaks of his days in the Royal Knights of Feendrache, including his time spent with King Joseph, the knight captain Gunther, and the king's attendant Kriemhild. While explaining to Arthur and Mordred that proper decorum and chivalry will be necessary for them to become knight captains, he suddenly senses monsters.

Siegfried, Arthur, and Mordred are en route to Burgundy.
Siegfried: This way.
Mordred: Yes, sir!
Arthur peeks at Siegfried's expression before opening his mouth to speak.
Arthur: Um...
Siegfried: What is it?
Arthur: Did you get promoted to captain right after you joined the Order?
Mordred: Oh! I wanna know too!
Siegfried: Well... Before I became captain of the Order of the Black Dragons, I was a member of the Royal Knights of Feendrache.
Arthur: The Royal Knights of Feendrache...
Mordred: I read about them in the library! If I remember correctly, they were the order of knights that preceded the Black Dragons.
Siegfried: Correct. That was ages ago, but in those days the captain's name was Gunther.
Siegfried: Around that time I was still a rookie knight without manners or a single chivalrous bone in my body.
Arthur: Whoa! I never would've guessed you used to be a knight-in-training just like us!
Mordred: It's hard to imagine after seeing you as you are now. What were you like back then, Siegfried?
Siegfried: It's not exactly an interesting story.
Arthur: Whaaat... You can't just stop there! I wanna know!
Seemingly won over by the pair's entreaties, Siegfried responds, looking slightly bashful.
Siegfried: Heh... Very well. It's a little embarrassing talking about my past, but if you insist.
Siegfried: Back then I was a fresh recruit of the Royal Knights of Feendrache...
Siegfried begins to speak about his past, a nostalgic smile on his face.
Siegfried: ...
One day, after finishing his duties with the Royal Knights of Feendrache, Siegfried sits drinking in a tavern of the capital.
Hagen: Well, look what the cat dragged in. I thought it reeked of beasts in here, but I guess it was just Siegfried.
Royal Knight 1: The stench is sure to make our drinks taste awful.
Royal Knight 2: Sir Hagen, did you hear? Apparently Siegfried slayed another pack of monsters all on his own.
Royal Knight 1: He acts alone so he can hog all the glory. If he likes being by himself so much, he shouldn't have joined a knight order.
Royal Knight 2: I guess there's no hope for someone not descended from knights or nobles.
Siegfried: ...
Hagen: Oh? The beast approaches.
Royal Knight 1: Wh-what's your problem? You looking for a fight?
Siegfried: Mind moving out of my way? I need a refill.
Royal Knight 2: D-don't act all high and mighty just because you happen to be a little strong! Come on, let's take this outside!
Siegfried: Good grief... Can't a guy drink in peace?
Siegfried: Fine by me. I'd be more than happy to take you on. All of you at once, for that matter.
Gunther: All right, that's enough! Stop right there!
Royal Knight 1: C-Captain!
Just as the situation is approaching its breaking point, Captain Gunther of the Royal Knights of Feendrache intervenes.
Gunther: Have you forgotten that fighting is prohibited? I'm willing to overlook it this time, so why don't we all calm down and return to our seats?
A bright voice suddenly resounds throughout the room, breaking through the tension caused by the fight.
Kriemhild: Sorry about that! We'll get them to settle down!
Kriemhild: Don't let us interrupt you!
Kriemhild lowers her head in apology to the barkeep and the other patrons.
Thanks to her warm disposition, the mood in the tavern returns to normal.
Royal Knight 2: W-we were just leaving.
Gunther: I see. I'll handle the tab, so take care on your way home.
Royal Knight 1: We'll be going now...
Royal Knight 2: Thanks for the drinks...
Gunther: Sure thing! See you later!
Siegfried: I'm heading out too.
Gunther: Oh, I have something to talk to you about, so would you mind sticking around?
Hagen takes that moment to interrupt, his voice dripping with contempt.
Hagen: Hmph... You sure have gotten attached to that beast His Majesty picked up on a whim.
Gunther: And then there's you, Hagen. Why are you so critical of everything he does?
Gunther: Are you intimidated by Siegfried's talent?
Hagen: How dare you.
Hagen: You've spoiled my drink... Step aside.
Hagen squares his shoulders and leaves the room in a huff.
Gunther: Don't let the door hit you on the way out!
Kriemhild: Phew... Now that those jerks are gone, I'm starving!
Kriemhild: Hehe... Time to enjoy some delicious food!
Siegfried looks at Gunther and Kriemhild, making no attempt to hide his scowl.
Siegfried: Sigh... You two again...
Gunther: Hey... You don't have to sigh so obviously like that. It hurts, you know.
Siegfried: Don't force yourselves to be around me.
Kriemhild: Force ourselves? The two of you just happened to be here when I got to the tavern.
Gunther: That's right. This is where we come to let off steam.
With that said, Gunther and Kriemhild order their usuals from the barkeep.
Gunther: So Siegfried, word has it you failed to show up for another mission briefing. Is that right?
Siegfried: That's the first I've heard of a briefing.
Gunther: Huh?
Kriemhild: Don't tell me... Hagen again?
Gunther: Sigh... That guy's methods are so petty.
Siegfried: No harm done. I wouldn't have gone anyway.
Gunther: Hey! You never had any intention of attending?
Siegfried: But I'm grateful I could make the most of my time by enjoying a nice, relaxing drink instead.
Siegfried: Though I guess even that ended up being spoiled.
Gunther: Don't be like that. Why don't you try interacting with your fellow knights from time to time?
Gunther: I bet you haven't even learned the names and faces of your own comrades yet.
Siegfried: There's no point. I can handle missions on my own.
Gunther: Ngh... Well... I guess that's true.
Gunther: But let's all try to get along as fellow knights of the order.
Siegfried: I'm not interested in making friends.
With that, Siegfried stands.
Siegfried: Now, if you'll excuse me.
Gunther: Oh! I almost forgot! You'll be at training tomorrow, right?
Siegfried: If I feel like it.
Gunther: If you don't show up, I'll be sending out a search party!
Kriemhild: Oh, that reminds me! There's something I was supposed to tell you!
Kriemhild: His Majesty will be at the usual spot! That's the message!
Siegfried: Got it.
With that, Siegfried heads out of the tavern.
Deep within the castle walls, Siegfried pays a visit to a deserted courtyard.
King Josef: Took you long enough. You're late for our appointment, you know.
Siegfried: I ran into some trouble.
King Josef: Siegfried, you're slipping into your old speech patterns.
Siegfried: My apologies.
King Josef: You have to understand you stick out like a sore thumb.
King Josef: You need to learn how to get along with others so you don't create unnecessary trouble.
Siegfried: Yes, Your Majesty.
King Josef: Hmph... Well, have a seat.
At King Josef's urging, Siegfried takes his seat.
King Josef: Have you read the book I gave you?
Siegfried: No, Your Majesty.
King Josef: Siegfried. I'm starting to think that perhaps you have no interest in learning about things like chivalry and proper decorum.
Siegfried: I came here to study the art of war in order to become stronger.
Siegfried: I fail to see how learning about chivalry and etiquette will make me stronger.
King Josef: Good grief... You're expecting immediate effects from reading a book? You certainly are a pragmatic fellow.
Siegfried: With all due respect... There's never a guarantee that I'll live to see tomorrow.
Siegfried: So why is it that everyone else seems to live their lives believing the next morning will come without fail?
King Josef: Oho... You sure say some interesting things for someone who refuses to read.
King Josef: It's true that you won't become stronger by simply reading a book.
King Josef: And there is in fact no guarantee that you'll live to see tomorrow.
King Josef: I don't know the reason why you live your life with such urgency...
King Josef: But there will no doubt come a time when the knowledge you learn from books will be of use to you.
Siegfried: I guess I'm just not cut out to be a knight after all.
King Josef: Siegfried... What is it that you're so afraid of?
Siegfried: I'm not afraid of anything.
King Josef: From where I'm standing, it appears you keep your distance not to prevent yourself from hurting others, but to prevent yourself from being hurt.
King Josef: Why do you go to such lengths to avoid getting close to others? What happened to you in the past?
Siegfried: Well...
King Josef: My apologies, I don't mean to pry. You're free to not answer.
Siegfried: ...
King Josef: Siegfried... I believe that true strength is something that exhibits itself naturally.
King Josef: Even without that tough-guy attitude and speech of yours, I have faith that your strength will shine through.
King Josef: When I first met you, you were truly like a wild animal...
King Josef: I couldn't help thinking that if I left you alone, eventually you really would turn into a monster.
Siegfried: Heh... You don't mince words.
Siegfried: I have to say, you're quite the oddball yourself, taking in that monster to teach him chivalry and manners.
Siegfried: Whatever happened to "a wise man does not court danger"?
King Josef: Well... I guess a wise man just courts entertainment instead.
Both: Heh...
King Josef: Now then, that's enough fun and games.
King Josef: Will you indulge me by attending another of my lectures for a bit?
Siegfried: Yes, Your Majesty.
King Josef: Very well. Then let's begin today's lesson.
Siegfried: Regrettably, I've forgotten my book.
King Josef: Well, no matter. In that case, you can just listen to me speak tonight.
King Josef: Let's go for a stroll.
Siegfried: Understood.
In this way, Siegfried was taught all the knowledge necessary for a knight directly from the king himself.
Even now, those teachings form the core of the knight known as Siegfried.
Siegfried: So anyway, that's what happened.
Arthur: Huh! I never would've guessed you used to be like that!
Mordred: Yeah... Sounds like you used to be a lot rougher around the edges... and grouchier too.
Siegfried: Heh... It's a shameful story to say the least, but I guess we can chalk it up to the follies of youth.
Siegfried: It's all thanks to King Josef's guidance that I was able to become a knight.
Arthur: Urgh... Guess I need to work on studying chivalry and etiquette more.
Mordred: Yeah. I've only ever thought about becoming a knight captain to make good money and help everybody at the orphanage.
Siegfried: Heh... If you were a mercenary soldier without any attachments, you could choose your master based on whoever offered the most payment.
Siegfried: But you're going to become knight captains, right? In that case, there will come a time when proper decorum and chivalry are demanded of you.
Arthur & Mordred: Yes, sir!
Siegfried: I like your spirit.
Just then, Siegfried seems to sense something and stops Arthur and Mordred in their tracks.
Siegfried: Wait, you two. Can you sense those monsters?
Arthur: Huh?
Mordred: Not in the least!
Siegfried: Try coming this way...
Arthur and Mordred approach the area indicated by Siegfried.
Siegfried: This type of monster attracts its prey using mucus that emits a unique odor.
Mordred: Now that you mention it... Something does smell weird!
Siegfried: The mucus contains a powerful toxin used to dissolve its prey, so be careful.
Arthur: Urgh... So like, poison? Creepy!
Siegfried: Now then... I'll show you how to defeat it, so follow my lead.
Arthur & Mordred: Yes, sir!

SIEGFRIED - Chapter 2: Disaster - Episode 2: Scene 2

After defeating the monsters, the three knights arrive at the orphanage to find it safe and sound. Siegfried grudgingly agrees to let Arthur and Mordred continue traveling with him, and they resume their journey toward Burgundy. Meanwhile the White Dragons depart for Burgundy, led by Lancelot.

Thanks to Siegfried's instruction, Arthur and Mordred are able to defeat the monsters.
After that, the group arrives at the orphanage with no further incident.
Arthur and Mordred survey the building from a distance, hidden from view.
Arthur: Thank goodness! It doesn't look like there's anything bad going down around here!
Mordred: Heh. The sister and the kids are playing just like they always do.
Siegfried: Are you sure you don't want to say hello?
Arthur: Nah, that's okay!
Mordred: Showing our faces would cause a big fuss. And besides...
Arthur: We already decided we're not going to return until we're knight captains!
Mordred: What he said!
Siegfried: Heh... I admire your dedication.
Mordred: And now we've got another objective to carry out! Right, Arthur?
Arthur: Yeah! We sure do!
Siegfried: And what might that be? Haven't you two already achieved your objective?
Arthur and Mordred fidget for a moment as they gather the courage to ask Siegfried a question.
Arthur: Um... Do you think it'd be okay if we came with you, Siegfried?
Siegfried: No. There's no telling what dangers may lie ahead.
Mordred: We're prepared for that! If we run into danger, we'll go back to the capital!
Arthur: And we'll follow any orders you give us!
Siegfried: By no means will the two of you be coming along. You'd just slow me down, and I'd like to keep my concerns to an absolute minimum.
Mordred: We know we're a burden. But we'll never become knight captains the way we are now.
Arthur: We wanna learn lots of things from you, just like how you learned from King Josef!
Siegfried: You two...
The pair refuse to budge, and Siegfried finally looks skyward, seemingly defeated.
Siegfried: Oh, all right.
Siegfried: My fate was already sealed when I agreed to bring you two with me in the first place.
Arthur: Wait, really?
Mordred: We can come with you?
Siegfried: Yes, but only because I concluded it would be safer to let you come along than to have you end up following me anyway.
Siegfried: But whatever you do, don't act on your own.
Siegfried himself is surprised by his own decision that completely contradicts his usual way of doing things.
Arthur: Woohoo! You're the best, Siegfried!
Siegfried: But remember... If you sense even the slightest hint of danger, you're to run away without me.
Siegfried: Don't even think about fighting.
Mordred: Okay! We promise!
Siegfried: Then let's hurry toward Burgundy.
Arthur & Mordred: Yes, sir!
The three knights resume their journey to Burgundy.
Meanwhile a squadron of White Dragons departs for Burgundy, led by Lancelot.
Lancelot: All right, Vane. Look after the city for us.
Vane: You got it, Lancey! Don't worry about us. You just get out there and do your thing!
Lancelot: Right. I'm off.
Lancelot turns to face the White Dragons and holds his sword aloft.
Lancelot: Proud knights of the Order of Dragons! We march for Burgundy to quell the threat of monsters!
White Dragons: Yes, sir!
As the knights-in-training see the White Dragons off with sparkling eyes, Tornelio alone wears a worried expression.
Tornelio: (Hey, Cruz... I don't see Arthur and Mordred. Do you know where they went?)
Cruz: (No idea...)
Tornelio: (Really? This isn't good... Where could they have gone?)
Cruz: (It doesn't look like they're around here anywhere...)
Henry: Hey, you two! We're supposed to head to the barracks to rest! Make sure to pass the message along to those other two morons too!
Tornelio: O-okay! I'll let them know!
Tornelio: (If those two don't hurry back, they're going to miss roll call!)
Having been the first to notice Arthur and Mordred's absence, Tornelio worries over the knowledge alone.
