SIEGFRIED - Chapter 2: Disaster - Episode 3

Siegfried tells Arthur and Mordred about his battle with Fafnir, where he had found himself on the brink of death because of a man named Hagen. But thanks to Gunther having him drink Fafnir's blood, he miraculously pulled through. Following the knights' return to the capital, Hagen was exiled from the kingdom.

Arthur and Mordred have completed their initial objective of confirming the orphanage's safety.
But the pair then begged to accompany Siegfried on his way to Burgundy.
Worn down by their persistence, Siegfried reluctantly granted them permission to come with him.
Along the way, Arthur and Mordred fire question after question at Siegfried with deep interest.
Arthur: You became captain of the Black Dragons after you defeated Fafnir, right?
Siegfried: Right. I was praised for my achievements and appointed as King Josef's personal bodyguard, as well as captain of the Black Dragons.
Mordred: What was it like beating Fafnir?
Siegfried: Well... It's a long story, but to sum things up, the battle was a fierce one.
Arthur & Mordred: Please tell us more!
Siegfried: Sheesh... It's not a very interesting story, but I suppose it'll be a decent way to pass the time.
Some time ago, the True Dragon Fafnir that dwelled in the Howling Valley went on a rampage, causing damage to the nearby villages.
King Josef: Captain Gunther of the Royal Knights, and Sir Siegfried.
King Josef: I hereby command you to quell the threat of the True Dragon Fafnir.
Gunther & Siegfried: Yes, Your Majesty!
Hagen: (When did that damned Siegfried start to get such preferential treatment?)
Hagen: (Heh heh... Well, no matter. Just you wait.)
Siegfried and Gunther—captain of the Royal Knights of Feendrache—were ordered to subjugate the fearsome beast.
And so the Royal Knights depart for the dragon's lair, led by Gunther.
They traverse the Howling Valley and at long last arrive at the den of the True Dragon Fafnir.
Gunther's squadron of elite forces lead the vanguard joined by Siegfried, with Hagen's unit bringing up the rear.
Hagen's unit has volunteered to act as the supply convoy, tasked with providing support for the knights who will battle the dragon.
Gunther: The time has finally come, Siegfried.
Siegfried: Indeed.
Hagen: (You'll both meet your end this day too.)
Siegfried: You look a bit pale, Hagen. Everything all right?
Hagen: I-I'm fine.
Siegfried: ...
Gunther: Hagen, we'll be counting on you to tend to the wounded.
Hagen: I'm well aware. You'd better return victorious.
Gunther's unit and Siegfried enter Fafnir's den, while Hagen's squadron remain outside the cave.
They immediately put their battle strategy in motion.
Gunther: We'll stall the dragon while you head in to deliver the finishing blow.
Siegfried: Understood.
Fafnir: Grrr...
Siegfried: Sorry for waking you from your nap, but don't worry—I'll see to it you have a nice, long sleep.
Siegfried: Unfortunately for you, I've decided to side with people over beasts.
Siegfried: What do you say we put our lives on the line and have an all-out battle?
Fafnir: Groooar!
Siegfried: Haaah!
The force from Siegfried and Fafnir's clash shakes the walls of the cave.
Gunther: All right! Cover the left and right flanks and lend Siegfried your support!
Gunther's Unit: Yes, sir!
Gunther's Unit: ...
Gunther: What's happening on the right flank? Take your positions immediately!
Gunther's Unit 3: Sorry, Captain!
Gunther's Unit 4: We...
And with that, the knights assigned to the right flank run out of the cave as fast as their legs can carry them.
Gunther: What... What is the meaning of this!
With half their forces gone, Gunther and his unit are visibly shaken.
Siegfried: Hey, Gunther! What's going on!
Gunther: H-hold on, Siegfried! Give us a moment to regroup!
Just then, a breathless knight dashes up to Gunther.
Messenger: Huff... Huff...
Captain Gunther!
Gunther: Wait... I thought you were guarding the capital!
Messenger: I came here in secret with a message from Kriemhild!
Messenger: According to her information, Hagen and his unit are conspiring to see to it that you fall in battle!
Messenger: You must abandon the subjugation of Fafnir and return to the capital at once!
Gunther: So that was Hagen's doing!
As the knight delivers his message, the mouth of the cave begins to crumble.
Hagen: (Now... Go on and be a nice snack for Fafnir.)
Hagen's Unit 1: Say... If those two are defeated, who's gonna defeat Fafnir?
Hagen's Unit 2: How am I supposed to know! I'm sure Hagen has a plan!
Hagen: There's no need for concern. Once Gunther and Siegfried are dead and gone, our unit will subjugate the beast.
Hagen: And then you'll receive a reward large enough for you, your children, and even your children's children to live a life of luxury.
Fafnir: Groooar!
Siegfried: ...!
Run!
Gunther's Unit 1: Aaahh!
Gunther's Unit 2: Gyaaah!
Siegfried: Damn it!
The knights drop like flies as Fafnir's scorching hellfire engulfs them one after another.
Gunther: Ngh... What do we do now!
Siegfried: Hyaaah!
Fafnir: Groooar!
Siegfried dodges Fafnir's attacks, finding opportunities to strike whenever he can.
Gunther: Incredible... Siegfried is holding his own against Fafnir!
Fafnir: Groooar!
Siegfried: Tch...
Siegfried: Haah!
Siegfried manages to defend his fellow knights from the dragon's flames.
But his body becomes increasingly battered as he continues to fight even while protecting his comrades.
Siegfried: Huff... Huff...
Gunther: Siegfried! I'll fight with you!
Siegfried: No! You focus on finding a way to take the others and escape!
Gunther: But... If I do that, you'll...
Siegfried and the True Dragon Fafnir are both teetering on the brink of defeat.
Knight and dragon alike sense that the next strike will determine the battle.
Siegfried: The rest is in your hands, Gunther.
Gunther: Wait... What are you...
Fafnir: Groooar!
The next moment, Fafnir sinks its enormous fangs deeply into Siegfried's flesh.
Siegfried: Rgh...
But rather than dodge, Siegfried takes the attack head-on.
Siegfried can feel the beast's fangs piercing his core.
Siegfried: Urgh...
Siegfried: This... is the end!
The next moment, Siegfried thrusts his blade into the mighty dragon's throat.
Fafnir: Groooar!
Siegfried: Urgh... You're not... getting away...
Even as he coughs up blood, Siegfried refuses to release his blade.
Fafnir: Grah...
At long last, the True Dragon Fafnir collapses to the ground, unmoving.
Gunther: Siegfriiied!
Siegfried: Gun... ther...
Gunther immediately dashes over to Siegfried to find his friend seemingly on his last legs.
Gunther: Hey, Siegfried! Don't you dare die on me! I won't let you!
Siegfried: It's... too late... This is the end... for me...
Gunther: Don't say that! Stay with me!
Gunther: The man who emerges victorious is the man who continues struggling until the bitter end!
Siegfried: Don't be... ridiculous...
Gunther: Ugh... Damn it... Damn it! Isn't there anything I can do!
Almost unconsciously, Gunther picks up a helmet lying close by.
He then drips some of Fafnir's blood into the helmet and holds it to Siegfried's lips.
Siegfried: What... are you...
Gunther: Just drink it!
At Gunther's urging, Siegfried drains the helmet of Fafnir's blood.
Gunther: (I've heard that dragon blood possesses special powers...)
Gunther: (Please... Save him... Save Siegfried...)
Gunther: ...!
After ingesting the dragon's blood, Siegfried's wounds close in the blink of an eye.
And at long last Siegfried's heart begins to beat normally, and he manages to escape death.
Gunther: It... It's a miracle...
Siegfried: ...
Siegfried slips out of consciousness and falls into a deep sleep.
All those present are shocked by the miracle brought forth by Fafnir's blood.
Gunther: Listen up... Not a word of this to anyone. Forget any of this happened.
Messenger: Y-yes, sir!
Gunther: Now then... As soon as Fafnir's been sealed away, we'll make our departure.
Injured Knight: Understood!
Gunther: Siegfried... And the rest of you. Live on, no matter what.
Gunther and the other knights depart from the den with Siegfried in tow.
Meanwhile Hagen attempts to determine whether Siegfried and Gunther's forces are dead or alive.
Hagen: The cave has fallen quiet...
Hey, move those rocks and see what's happening inside.
Hagen's Unit: Yes, sir!
Hagen's knights begin moving the crumbled stones to investigate the inside of the cave.
Gunther: Haah!
Hagen's Unit 1: Urgh...
At that moment, Gunther and the other surviving knights who had been lying in wait leap out to restrain Hagen's forces.
Messenger: Hyah!
Hagen's Unit 2: Ngh...
Injured Knight: Don't move!
Gunther's Unit 3: You're all alive!
Gunther's Unit 4: Glad to see you safe, Captain Gunther!
Gunther: Don't move a muscle! I don't want to have to harm my own comrades!
Hagen: Tch... I can't believe they managed to survive against Fafnir in battle... They really are monsters...
Hagen: Now! Hurry and finish them off!
Hagen's Unit 1: Sir Hagen... Save me...
Hagen: Of course. I'll save you right now, so stay still.
Hagen: Go on, they're on the verge of death! They'll fall easily as they are now!
Hagen: By doing so, their achievements will be ours!
A sense of unrest spreads throughout the knights as Hagen and Gunther face off.
Gunther's Unit 3: Ngh...
Gunther: Don't let Hagen continue to manipulate you.
Gunther: Try using your heads a little.
Gunther: After you kill us, you'll be the next ones to die.
Gunther's Unit 4: What!
Hagen: Curse you, Gunther! Stop speaking nonsense!
Hagen: Come on, do it! Finish them off!
Gunther: I know Hagen must be blackmailing you somehow.
Gunther: I'll handle everything once we return to the capital, so please... Put your faith in me!
Gunther's Unit 3: Urgh... Captain! We're so sorry...
Hagen: Confound it! Useless fools!
Hagen: Now, Hagen Unit! Slay them all!
Gunther's Unit: ...
But the remaining members of Hagen's unit and the traitors from Gunther's join together to restrain Hagen.
Hagen: You... You filthy recreants!
Gunther: Hagen... It's over for you.
Following those events, Gunther and the other knights return safely to the capital with Siegfried.
And so Fafnir is sealed away, and Hagen's conspiracy is exposed just in the nick of time.
Thanks in part to Kriemhild's testimony, Hagen's crimes are brought to light, and he is exiled from the kingdom.
