SIEGFRIED - Chapter 4: Yesteryear - Episode 1

Siegfried dreams of the past, to just after the Order of the Black Dragons was formed. Gunther asks for Siegfried's help in his pursuit of a relationship with Kriemhild, but Kriemhild seems to have an interest in Siegfried instead. Oblivious to this, Siegfried remains loyal to Gunther and plays a large role in getting the couple together. When King Josef hears of this, he praises Siegfried for his progress.

One day, Gunther asks Siegfried to meet him at their usual tavern.
Gunther: ...
Siegfried: Gunther, I'm sorry for being late.
Gunther: O-oh! You're fine! Actually, I should be the one apologizing for making you come out here.
Siegfried: It's no bother. What did you need me for?
Gunther: Er, well... About that...
Siegfried: Is it something difficult to speak about?
Gunther: No, nothing like that. I just have a favor to ask.
Siegfried: Well, I can't help unless you tell me what it is.
Gunther: R-right, yeah.
Gunther: The thing is... Um, do you mind if I get another drink first before we start?
Siegfried: I don't mind... Actually, let me join you. I'll have what you're having.
Their orders come soon after, and they spend a while nursing their drinks.
Siegfried: So Gunther, how much longer am I going to have to wait before you start talking?
Gunther: Oh yeah, we're supposed to be talking! Sorry!
At Siegfried's prodding, Gunther eventually reveals the purpose of the meeting.
Gunther: What do you think about Kriemhild?
Siegfried: About Kriemhild?
Gunther: I mean, you've got to have an opinion of her, right?
Gunther: If you had to introduce her to someone, what would you say about her?
Siegfried: Hmm. I would say she's a good-natured person who serves as His Majesty's attendant.
Gunther: And?
Siegfried: That's all I've got.
Gunther: I see... Okay, I guess that's good enough.
Gunther: (I didn't think Siegfried thought about her any other way, but I wanted to make sure.)
Gunther seems satisfied with what he gleans from Siegfried's reaction.
Gunther: What I wanted to ask you today is... Would you be the go-between for me and Kriemhild?
Siegfried: A go-between? What for?
Siegfried: You two seem plenty acquainted already to me.
Gunther: Sure, as friends we get along decently.
Gunther: But that's not what I'm asking about. It's, well...
Siegfried: Well? Well what?
Gunther: Are you serious? Normally a person would get it by now!
Gunther: Don't tell me you're messing with me!
Siegfried: I am completely serious.
Gunther: Sigh... I should have known better than to expect a normal reaction out of you.
Gunther finally loses his patience at Siegfried's obliviousness and speaks his true intentions.
Gunther: Let me spell it out for you: I want to get together with Kriemhild romantically!
Siegfried: Oh, that's what you meant.
Siegfried: So you wish to change your relationship with her from a platonic one to a romantic one?
Gunther: Yes, that's what I said.
Gunther: I knew you were a strange guy, but this is just too much...
Siegfried: Am I that strange?
Gunther: Summarizing everything up in one line like that makes this seem like some strategy meeting.
Siegfried: Heh... Isn't it though? I'll need an appropriate plan of action to tackle this important task you've given me.
Gunther: Hold on! Does that mean you're going to help?
Siegfried: Yes, as long as you're fine with somebody like me helping.
Gunther: Siegfried!
Siegfried: How exactly am I supposed to help though?
Gunther: Don't you worry about that. I've already got a plan...
They strategize late into the evening at the tavern.
A few days later, Kriemhild suddenly asks Siegfried to meet with her.
He greets her at the same tavern.
Siegfried: Kriemhild, I'm sorry to keep you waiting.
Kriemhild: Don't be. I'm the one who's taking time out of your day.
Siegfried: Actually, this works out quite well for me. I have something to speak with you about.
Kriemhild: You do?
Siegfried: Yes, but you invited me first.
Siegfried: Go ahead and tell me what you wanted to talk about.
Kriemhild: O-oh, um... I'd honestly prefer it if you spoke first.
Siegfried: Hmm, as long as you don't mind then.
Siegfried calmly starts explaining to the suddenly nervous Kriemhild what his motive for meeting is.
Siegfried: I received tickets to a play from a troupe leader who is on good terms with our knightly order.
Kriemhild: A play? Is it the one that's currently being performed in the capital?
Siegfried: Yes, that's the one. You know about it?
Kriemhild: Know about it? I'm a huge fan of that troupe!
Siegfried: That's perfect then. Would you like to watch it together?
Kriemhild: You're kidding! Of course I would! I'd love to!
Siegfried: That's a relief to hear. Here you go.
With a smile, he hands over the ticket.
Kriemhild: Hehehe! Awesome! You have no idea how happy this makes me! Thanks, Siegfried!
Kriemhild: (I can't believe Siegfried made the first move and invited me to the play!)
Siegfried: Heh... I'm sure Gunther will be happy to hear you're so excited.
Kriemhild: Huh? Gunther?
Siegfried: These tickets were given as thanks for the security his Royal Knights once provided for the troupe.
Siegfried: So you should really be thanking him for them.
Kriemhild: Oh... I see.
Siegfried: I understand your excitement. It's sure to be an enjoyable night for the three of us.
Feeling accomplished, he gently smiles and nods eagerly to reinforce his point.
Kriemhild: I guess it will be...
Siegfried: Hmm? You don't look too eager anymore. Is something wrong?
Kriemhild: No, nothing's wrong!
Kriemhild: Gosh, I'm so excited! I can't wait until the day of!
Siegfried: That's good then. Gunther will be overjoyed to know your response.
Siegfried: I only wish he could have seen your excitement in person.
Kriemhild: R-right! I'll have to thank him later!
Siegfried: Please do.
Suddenly, Siegfried's satisfied expression falls, and his eyes open wide as he remembers something.
Siegfried: Kriemhild, now that my business is concluded, what did you want to talk about?
Kriemhild: Oh yeah! Um...
Kriemhild quickly takes the pieces of paper sitting on her lap and hides them behind her back.
Kriemhild: I just wanted to talk about seeing the play myself.
Siegfried: Everything worked out nicely then.
Kriemhild: Exactly! What a coincidence! Hahaha!
Siegfried: Heh. The play can't come soon enough.
Kriemhild: Yeah.
Not too long after, the day of the performance arrives.
Kriemhild waits alone at their designated meeting place.
Kriemhild: ...
A man appears in the distance, running toward her at full speed.
Gunther: Kriemhild! Sorry for being late! Did you wait long?
Kriemhild: Don't worry, you're fine.
A torrent of words spill from Gunther's mouth as his eyes flicker about frantically.
Gunther: Siegfried got pulled aside for some emergency, so it looks like he's not gonna be able to make it.
Kriemhild: Oh...
Gunther: I'm really sorry about this. But he wanted the two of us to go ahead and enjoy ourselves.
Kriemhild: It's too bad he couldn't come. I mean, his ticket is wasted now.
Gunther: True. But that doesn't mean we should waste ours! Let's go in.
Kriemhild: You know what? Yeah! We'll just have to enjoy it for him too!
Gunther: That's the spirit! We better hurry or we'll be late!
Gunther's plan to watch the play alone with Kriemhild is a success.
Later on, Siegfried shares the passing of these casual events with King Josef.
Siegfried: And then Gunther thanked me for everything that happened.
King Josef: How interesting.
King Josef: What happened with Gunther and Kriemhild after that?
Siegfried: They didn't take long to grow closer from there, and I believe they even entered a relationship recently.
Siegfried: This is apparently all thanks to me. I've never had someone give me so many words of gratitude before.
King Josef: Was Kriemhild the one who thanked you?
Siegfried: No, Gunther was. Why?
King Josef: Ah... Please forget I asked.
King Josef: I suppose you're still hopeless outside of combat.
Siegfried: What are you referring to? Did I do something wrong?
King Josef: No, you did quite well. You've made an unbelievable amount of progress since we first met.
Siegfried: Oh. Thank you for your kind words.
Siegfried: I'm hoping that learning the subtleties of the heart will help me become stronger.
King Josef: So that was your goal?
King Josef: I can't say I'm surprised.
Siegfried: Well, I am fully devoted to bettering myself as a knight.
King Josef: Hmm.
After that conversation, more time passes. Eventually, news of Gunther and Kriemhild's engagement spreads throughout the kingdom.
