SIEGFRIED - Chapter 4: Yesteryear - Episode 2

Some time after Gunther and Kriemhild's wedding, Siegfried meets them in their usual tavern, where Gunther reveals that he is going to quit being a knight and move to Burgundy with Kriemhild. Kriemhild informs Siegfried that they'd like him to name their child, and he later settles on the name Licht. But as more time passes, a rebellion arises in Burgundy.

Some time afterward, Siegfried is called to the same tavern where everything started.
Siegfried: I'm late, aren't I? Sorry about that.
Gunther: Actually, we just got here ourselves.
Kriemhild: We haven't ordered anything yet, so why don't we get started?
As soon as their drinks are ordered and everything arrives at the table, Gunther gulps his beverage down at an unusually rapid pace.
Gunther: Come on, start drinking, Siegfried! Today we're going to see which of us can outdrink the other!
Siegfried: ...
Gunther: Oh, but Kriemhild's going to sit this one out! Tea only for you!
Kriemhild: I can order it myself, thank you very much.
Kriemhild: You don't have to push yourself to keep up with him, Siegfried. Just drink at your own pace.
Siegfried: All right.
Gunther: Huh? What? You saying you won't drink what I got us?
Siegfried: I will, don't worry.
Gunther: That's what I thought! You'll drink what I pour, right, Siegfried!
The strangely elated Gunther continues to down drink after drink with Siegfried.
Kriemhild: Don't you think you're drinking too much?
Gunther: What? Nah, it's fine! This is just a bit of bonding between a former mentor and his pupil!
Siegfried: Indeed. Cheers.
Kriemhild: Sigh. Calling yourself his "former mentor" when you're acting nothing like one...
Gunther: You know, you've got a point there! Hahahaha!
Gunther chatters on cheerfully, his arm wrapped around Siegfried's shoulders.
Gunther: Do you remember the first time you met us, Siegfried?
Siegfried: The first time? Are you referring to when His Majesty was assaulted by monsters?
Gunther: Yep! You showed off your stupid levels of strength, yeah?
Gunther: When I saw how strong you were, I was completely floored.
Gunther: I just froze. Forgot to even run up to protect His Majesty.
Gunther: All I could do was think to myself, "Wow, there's really somebody this strong in the world."
Gunther: For the first time in my life I realized there were places a person couldn't reach no matter how much effort they put in.
Siegfried: I'm hardly anything that special. You're plenty—
The completely sloshed Gunther loudly interrupts Siegfried to continue his story.
Gunther: You don't need to convince me! I know who I am—former captain of an order of knights.
Gunther: I've got plenty of pride in my skills, and I know where I stand among all the people I've seen.
Gunther: But you're on a whole different level of talent. It wouldn't be enough to call you a genius either.
Gunther: You made me realize how average I actually was, that I was just decently scraping by.
Gunther: Being captain slowly became a heavy weight on my shoulders, and all I wanted to do was run away from everything after a while.
Gunther: That's why I really owe you one for taking on the captain title when the Black Dragons were formed.
Gunther: I'd already reached the end of my rope by then, dealing with all the duties of being captain and having responsibilities hanging over my head.
Gunther: I can't wait to quit being a knight altogether and move out to Burgundy with Kriemhild.
Siegfried: I see...
Gunther: You know, Siegfried? You've really changed since we first met.
Gunther: You can handle everything without me, right?
Siegfried: I believe so.
Gunther: Thanks, Siegfried.
Siegfried: No, I'm the one who should be thanking you.
Gunther: Hahaha, never thought I'd see you bow your head and give me thanks.
Gunther: Doesn't feel as good considering I'd hoped to beat you at drinking though.
Gunther: But it looks like even that's not something I can win at...
Gunther's head falls to the table as unconsciousness takes him, finally succumbing to the alcohol.
Kriemhild: That's enough excitement for tonight.
Kriemhild gently eases his head into a more comfortable position.
Kriemhild: He's really such an idiot.
Turning back to Siegfried, she sits up straight and holds his gaze.
Kriemhild: I suppose now is as good a time as ever to let you know I'm currently with child.
Siegfried: Congratulations. That's wonderful news.
Kriemhild: I can't believe he passed out before he could tell you himself.
She laughs affectionately as she brushes Gunther's hair back.
Kriemhild: He was probably too excited after we decided you would be the godfather who'd name our child.
Siegfried: That's a pretty big responsibility.
Kriemhild: I'm sorry though.
Siegfried: It's nothing to apologize for.
Kriemhild bows her head and continues talking without meeting his eyes.
Kriemhild: Not for that. I'm the one who suggested he find a job that wouldn't be dangerous.
Kriemhild: He's quitting because of me.
Siegfried: So that's what happened.
Kriemhild: Please don't blame him for abandoning you.
Siegfried: On the contrary, I hold nothing but gratitude toward him.
Kriemhild: Hehe... Then I thank you for your support.
Siegfried: Heh... Thank you for supporting him.
A peaceful silence settles over them. Kriemhild eventually interrupts it with a large, noisy stretch.
Kriemhild: I'm going to miss the three of us talking about everything and nothing like this...
Kriemhild: But I guess we're only moving to Burgundy, so it's not like we won't see each other again.
Siegfried: Right. Let's meet again sometime.
Kriemhild: It's a promise then.
Siegfried: A promise it is.
With this promise made, they bid each other farewell.
Days and weeks pass. As usual, Siegfried speaks with King Josef.
Siegfried: Everyone saw Gunther and Kriemhild off this morning before they left the kingdom.
King Josef: So they've left. I must say I'm sad to see them go.
Siegfried: As am I.
King Josef: Heh, I must say, the impression you leave with people has changed quite a bit compared to how you were before you joined us.
King Josef: I wonder if all these meetings and partings are the cause?
Siegfried: Have I truly changed that much? I don't really feel any different.
King Josef: Think about it. They saved their goodbyes to you for last, out of everyone they knew.
Siegfried: They did?
King Josef: Yes, you who they only came to know after you became a citizen of this kingdom.
King Josef: You should treasure this connection you have with them. Water and care for it as you would a garden.
Siegfried: Understood.
King Josef: That aside, have you finally decided on a name for the child?
Siegfried: I've been worrying over it for a quite a while.
Siegfried: But I'm thinking of going with "Licht."
King Josef: Licht, eh? That is a good name.
Siegfried: Is it really? Well, if it has your stamp of approval, then I'll write a letter right away and inform them with confidence.
King Josef: Heh... I hope they like it.
Siegfried: I hope so as well.
The king and his knight continue chatting with one another, enjoying a brief moment of respite from their duties.
But time passes once more, and with it a rebellion arises in Burgundy.
That is the same day Lancelot and Percival become vice-captains of the Order of the Black Dragons.
