SIEGFRIED - Chapter 4: Yesteryear - Episode 3

As Siegfried awakens in a mysterious research facility, Gunther speaks of the day of the rebellion in Burgundy. With Siegfried hot on his trail, the rebel leader had fled into a civilian home and taken hostages, which happened to be Gunther and his family. After injuring Gunther and Kriemhild and inflicting a fatal wound upon their young son Licht, the man flees, leaving the house in blazes. Gunther and his family disappear in the flames.

Siegfried: Ugh...
Gunther: Finally awake?
Siegfried takes in the sight of what appears to be an underground research facility before his eyes settle on Gunther.
Siegfried: Gunther...
Gunther: You really think you have the time to be dreaming when I'm about to give you a glimpse of hell?
Siegfried: Why are you doing this?
Gunther: Why? You already know the answer, don't you?
Gunther: I lost everything that day.
He stares up into nothingness and begins to speak of events long past.
On the day Lancelot and Percival receive their titles as vice-captains of the Black Dragons, a rebellion breaks out in Burgundy.
The captain and his knights march to quell the unrest, steadily approaching the place where Gunther and Kriemhild were supposed to live a peaceful, quiet life.
Siegfried had even received a letter from them inviting him to visit mere days before the fighting started.
As soon as they arrive, the battle between rebels and knights begins, but Siegfried leaves the battlefield behind to chase the rebel leader on horseback.
Siegfried: Hold it!
Rebel Leader: Damn it. I underestimated you, Siegfried.
Rebel Leader: To think a single horseman penetrated our stronghold's defenses...
With all the desperation of a person being hunted down, he smashes open the door of a citizen's house and rushes in.
Rebel Leader: Listen up! Don't you dare get any closer!
The deranged man grabs an injured citizen from within and uses her as a shield.
Kriemhild: Ah!
Gunther: Siegfried?
Siegfried: ...!
Gunther! Kriemhild!
By some cruel twist of fate, Gunther and Kriemhild are held at the rebel's mercy, both of them covered head to toe in injuries.
Rebel Leader: What's this? You know these people?
Siegfried: Don't drag innocent people into this!
Rebel Leader: Drag, huh? Is that how a knight of justice sees it?
Rebel Leader: You people are all the same, thinking yourselves to be right all the time and justifying your actions because of it.
Rebel Leader: Well, look what you've done now. You dragged these people into it as soon as you came here with your justice!
Siegfried: Gunther, Kriemhild, I swear I'll save you both.
Rebel Leader: Try something clever, I dare you! I'll kill them as soon as you do!
Rebel Leader: If you take even one step closer...
He starts edging toward the back exit with Kriemhild held hostage in his arms.
Gunther: Siegfried, please...
Kriemhild: Help us.
Rebel Leader: Don't move!
Siegfried: ...
Siegfried: (I have to look for an opportunity to help them escape.)
The sound of movement from an adjacent room catches everyone's attention.
???: Mama? Papa? Where are you?
Kriemhild: Licht! Don't come in here!
Licht: Mama!
Rebel Leader: Tch. You guys have a brat too?
A young child comes into the room despite Kriemhild's warning.
Rebel Leader: You better keep quiet, you stupid brat.
Cripes, just when I thought this couldn't get worse. Nothing I hate more than little rodents.
Licht: Mama!
Licht cries and runs for Kriemhild.
Rebel Leader: I told you to shut up, didn't I? Stupid kid!
Still grasping onto Kriemhild tightly, the leader brutally kicks the child away.
Licht: Nngh!
Kriemhild: Licht!
Siegfried: You bastard!
Rebel Leader: Don't you move! If you do, I'll kill her too! I swear I will!
Licht: Urgh...
No one notices the lamp knocked onto the floor from the rebel's violent kick until it's too late.
The fire spreads to a nearby cloth, and in the blink of an eye the entire room is set ablaze.
Rebel Leader: Cough, cough!
Siegfried: Damn it.
Siegfried: (Being backed into a corner only made him more reckless.)
Gunther: Hey, are you okay?
Gunther: Licht!
Licht: ...
Kriemhild: Ah... Aahh... Aaahhh, Licht!
Rebel Leader: Shut up already!
Kriemhild: Ah!
Siegfried: Stop it!
Rebel Leader: You shut up too, or watch her die!
Gunther: Have mercy, please... I beg of you...
Siegfried: I swear I'll save her.
Siegfried: (What can I do against someone like this?)
Yanking Kriemhild's hands behind her back and dragging her with him, the leader reaches the back exit.
Rebel Leader: Time to say goodbye!
Kriemhild: Agh—
Siegfried: Watch out!
The leader tosses Kriemhild aside, but Siegfried manages to catch her before she hits the floor.
Rebel Leader: Heh... You better hurry or she'll bleed out!
He leaps out the exit and doesn't look back.
Siegfried: Halt!
Siegfried: (I can't give chase. These three are more important.)
Kriemhild: Wheeze, wheeze... Cough!
Siegfried: ...!
Are you okay, Kriemhild?
Ignoring both Siegfried and the deep wound in her back, Kriemhild stumbles to Licht's side.
Kriemhild: Licht, my Licht, no...
Gunther is already kneeling silently by their child.
Siegfried: Gunther—
Gunther: There's no fixing a broken neck.
Kriemhild: No! Licht!
Whether from shock or from her wounds, she collapses unconscious to the floor.
Siegfried: Damn it all!
The flames lick the edges of the room. Soon enough they will swallow the remaining people in the home.
Siegfried: Gunther, get up! We have to move now!
The silent Gunther casts his gaze at Siegfried, his empty eyes reflecting the roaring blaze.
Gunther: You know, Siegfried?
Gunther: All we wanted to do was live our lives in peace and quiet.
Siegfried: What are you doing? Stop talking and stand!
Gunther: So why did this happen to us?
Siegfried pulls at his friend's arm, but Gunther's lifeless form doesn't react.
Gunther: Did we do something wrong, Siegfried?
Gunther: Or is there something wrong with the world?
Siegfried: ...!
The knight pulls and pulls, but they are out of time.
A flaming beam comes crashing down and separates Siegfried from his friends.
Siegfried: No! Get out of there!
Gunther: Ahh...
Siegfried: Don't let yourself die here! You have to live, Gunther!
Gunther staggers to his feet with Kriemhild and Licht in his arms and stands unmoving while the fire consumes them.
Gunther: Farewell, Siegfried.
Siegfried: Guntheeer!
Siegfried tries to dive back into the fire to save the family.
But the Black Dragon knights waiting outside grab onto him and hold him back.
As he desperately struggles in their grasp, the knights inform him that Lancelot and Percival need help.
Siegfried, faced with this bitter dilemma, turns his back on the roaring fire and leaves to aid his knights.
