A Poison for Monsters

Shinobu accompanies (Captain) and the others on a job to exterminate monsters. Though she has no trouble in defeating the monsters, Shinobu tells the crew that because the poison she had made for demons isn't effective against monsters in this world, she is unable to use her real abilities in battle. She and the crew decide to gather information on poison that could be used against monsters.

One sunny day, deep in a thick forest.
Monster: Grrrr...
Shinobu Kocho: Oh dear, it doesn't seem to affect the monsters here at all. This certainly is a problem.
Shinobu looks thoughtfully at the hostile beast in front of her, not a sign of fear in her expression.
Monster: Groooar!
Shinobu Kocho: ...
Monster: Grr...
Shinobu Kocho: Hm, I suppose that's all of them.
Vyrn: Shinobu! We've just about got 'em all. How's it goin' on your side?
Shinobu Kocho: I'm finished here. Are all of you done as well?
Lyria: Yeah! I guess our job here's finished!
After accepting a request to exterminate some monsters in the area, (Captain) and company had split up in the forest to complete the job.
Shinobu Kocho: Do you often receive these requests to exterminate monsters?
Vyrn: Yep! It's not that big of a deal for us, but some monsters could be dangerous if left alone.
The more monsters there are, the higher the risk that they will go into villages to hunt for food due to shortage. This makes it necessary for people to exterminate the monsters before they get out of hand.
Shinobu patiently listens as (Captain) explains this to her.
Shinobu Kocho: I see... I didn't know it was such an important request that involved saving the lives of many.
Shinobu Kocho: There may not be any demons here, but I can't turn a blind eye when people's lives are at stake.
Shinobu Kocho: I'd be glad to assist all of you in completing your requests until I return to my own world.
Vyrn: Awesome! It's always nice to have someone super strong fightin' with us!
Shinobu smiles softly in response.
Lyria: Oh...
Shinobu Kocho: Hm? What's the matter, Lyria? You seem rather interested in my sword.
Lyria: Oh, um, I was just thinking...
Lyria: Your sword is quite different from what the other Demon Slayers use. The shape looks very special!
A normal sword is forged with a sharp edge on one side and beautiful patterns tempered along the entirety of the blade.
However, Shinobu's sword lacks any sharp edges save the hilt and the very tip of the blade, its shape resembling an insect's stinger.
Vyrn: I was wonderin' about that too. I thought swords were for cuttin' things up, ya know?
Vyrn: Isn't it kinda hard to use when there's nothin' in the middle?
Shinobu Kocho: Oh, it isn't hard at all. I probably wouldn't use the middle part even if it was sharp.
Lyria: Why is that?
Shinobu Kocho: As you can see, I have a rather small frame. I'm afraid I don't have enough strength to sever a demon's head.
Shinobu Kocho: On the other hand, my current katana is infused with poison, making it possible for me to kill demons without cutting off their heads.
There are very few ways to kill demons, who are by nature immortal.
The first is by exposing a demon to sunlight. The second is to cut off its head with a Nichirin Sword—a special blade that Shinobu and the others use.
Shinobu explains to the crew that she also succeeded in inventing a kind of poison effective against demons.
Shinobu Kocho: I'm an expert in pharmacology, you see. I used wisteria—a kind of flower that repels demons—and created a poison capable of killing them. You could say I'm kind of an amazing person.
Vyrn: You said that like it was nothin', but ain't that a pretty big deal?
Lyria: Members of the Hashira are so amazing!
Lyria: Though poison sounds a little scary...
Shinobu Kocho: Don't worry, it's not only poison that I make. I also create antidotes that nullify demon power.
Shinobu Kocho: In any case, being able to use poison to kill demons isn't exactly useful at the moment.
Vyrn: Whaddya mean? You're using poison with your sword right now, aren'tcha?
Shinobu Kocho: I am—but it's a poison for demons.
Shinobu Kocho: Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to be very effective on monsters in this world.
Lyria: I see... I'm sorry, exterminating those monsters must have been hard then.
Shinobu Kocho: Oh, no, it's fine. They were easy enough to defeat with only the tip of my sword.
Shinobu Kocho: But I'm afraid I can't put my true abilities to use in our current situation.
Lyria: I guess it's not so easy adapting to a different world... Hmm, what should we do?
Vyrn: We gotta go report back for our job anyway, so why don't we gather some info along the way? Maybe you can find out more about what kinda poison works on monsters!
Shinobu Kocho: That's a wonderful idea! Adjusting the poison myself is a simple enough task, so if I can just get my hands on the ingredients, it shouldn't be too difficult.
Shinobu Kocho: I'm sorry for the trouble, (Captain), but do you think we could spare some time for that?
(Captain) nods, and the crew heads back into town to help Shinobu look for clues.

A Poison for Monsters: Scene 2

(Captain) and company hear about a village protected by monster-repelling flowers and decide to take a look. When they arrive at the village, Shinobu can't help but feel she has seen the flowers elsewhere before. Just then, the crew catches sight of a man threatening an old woman. After being saved, the woman tells them that the fight had started when she refused to give away any flowers due to certain circumstances. The crew accepts the woman's offer to stay the night at the village.

Upon asking around town, (Captain) and the others hear about a village where flowers are used to repel monsters.
The crew decides to visit the village in question to find out if this flower can be used in the same way as wisteria.
Lyria: Look! That must be the village they were talking about!
Vyrn: Whoa, they weren't kiddin' when they said the village's got a lotta flowers around it... Are these the ones that keep the monsters away?
Shinobu Kocho: Yes, I believe so. The flowers appear to be planted so that they completely surround the village.
Lyria: Wow, an entire field of white flowers! It almost looks like snow!
Vyrn: Haha! Just don’t go too crazy and accidentally step on 'em.
Lyria: Oh! I'm sorry, they were so pretty that I got a bit excited...
Shinobu Kocho: Hmm, so these are the flowers that monsters hate... I vaguely remember seeing them before...
???: C'mon! Just hand some over, will ya!
Lyria: Eep! Is someone fighting?
Vyrn: That came from the village. Let's go check it out, (Captain)!
Old Lady: I'm very sorry, but I'm afraid I can't help you...
Burly Man: It's not like I'm askin' for a lot! Give me some if you know what's good for ya!
Old Lady: Ahh!
The crew runs toward the angry voice to find a large man hovering over an elderly woman. The man throws a punch, causing the woman to fall hard on the ground.
Vyrn: Hey! Whaddya think you're doin'!
Burly Man: Tch, looks like we've got company. You're lucky this time, lady.
As soon as he spots (Captain) and company, the man turns and runs off without another word.
Old Lady: Ah... Good that all of you came...
Shinobu Kocho: Are you all right?
Old Lady: Yes... I'm fine. It was just a little fall—
Old Lady: Ack! Ooh, that hurts...
Shinobu Kocho: Oh dear! You must have injured yourself. Do you mind if I take a look?
Shinobu immediately runs to where the villager is and gently puts her hand on the woman's side to check the injury.
Shinobu Kocho: Fortunately, it doesn't seem like any bones are broken, though there are a few scratches.
Shinobu Kocho: I can treat those for you if you'd like. Do you live close by?
Old Lady: Yes, my house is just over there. But if it's only a graze, I'm sure it'll heal in a few days...
Shinobu Kocho: No, even a small scratch can get infected if bacteria gets in. To prevent that from happening, please let me treat you properly.
Shinobu Kocho: (Captain), can you carry this lady to her house? We wouldn't want her to trip on the way.
Shinobu Kocho: Lyria, Vyrn. Could I ask you to fetch some water and clean cloths for me?
Lyria: Of course! We'll go prepare them right away!
Shinobu Kocho: Thank you. Now then, shall we?
At the woman's house, Shinobu carefully washes the wound, dabbing an ointment on it before wrapping it with bandages.
Shinobu Kocho: That should do it. I'll leave you with some of this ointment, so please remember to apply it to the wound after you wash your body every day.
Old Lady: I appreciate it very much. The ointment doesn't sting at all. You seem very skilled at what you do.
Shinobu Kocho: I'm used to treating my friends after they get hurt in battle.
Vyrn: Yeah, you gave specific instructions back there and seemed to really know what you were doin'. You're not the average doctor, that's for sure.
Old Lady: Hehe. I'm very lucky to have been treated by such a talented young lady.
Lyria: Um, would you mind telling us what happened earlier? It seemed you were fighting about something...
Old Lady: Oh yes, that's right... After causing so much trouble, I should at least explain what happened.
The old woman begins to tell them about the day's events.
The man who attacked her was a merchant who came to the village looking to buy some monster-repelling flowers.
As the woman responsible for taking care of the flowers, she had taken it upon herself to talk to the merchant.
Old Lady: When I told him that we couldn't give him any flowers, he threw a fit and the situation escalated from there.
Shinobu Kocho: I see... Do you happen to know why the man wanted the flowers so much?
Old Lady: He said it was to help a village on a nearby island that was suffering frequent attacks from monsters...
Vyrn: Hrm, that's a pretty valid reason. Not what you'd expect from a guy who went wack and punched someone...
Shinobu Kocho: Did you refuse to give him the flowers because you didn't trust him?
Old Lady: Oh no, that's not it. He was very polite before he flew into a rage.
Old Lady: No matter the reason, I'm afraid I can't give out any of the flowers. Especially if it's to protect people from monsters...
Shinobu Kocho: ...
Shinobu Kocho: To be honest, the reason we came to this village is also because we were hoping you could give us some of your flowers.
Shinobu calmly outlines her reasoning for obtaining the monster-repelling plants.
Old Lady: I see... So you want to use the flowers for a poison against monsters.
Shinobu Kocho: That's right. Won't you consider sparing me some flowers for this purpose?
Old Lady: I'm terribly sorry, but I cannot.
Vyrn: But why? We're not plannin' to use it for anything bad.
Old Lady: I know very well that all of you are good people, and that the young lady here is telling the truth. Still...
Shinobu Kocho: Is the reason behind your refusal something you can't tell us?
Old Lady: I'm afraid so...
The elderly woman bows her head in apology.
Shinobu Kocho: Very well. I'm sorry for putting you in a difficult situation.
Shinobu Kocho: We wouldn't want to trouble you any further, so we should get going.
Old Lady: Please, wait! The sun will be setting soon.
Old Lady: The roads can get dangerous at night with monsters roaming about. Please, why don't you stay the night? I'll have a meal prepared for you as well.
Lyria: Huh? Are you sure?
Shinobu Kocho: Oh, I'm quite good at seeing in the dark, so we'll be fine even if there are monsters.
Old Lady: But I'd like to thank all of you for saving me today... I wouldn't be able to live with myself if I couldn't at least do something in return.
Vyrn: Whaddya think? Our ship is kinda far from here...
Shinobu Kocho: ...
Shinobu Kocho: Hmm, yes. I am a little tired from all the walking today. Would it be all right if we took you up on your offer?
Old Lady: Yes! Yes, of course! I'll go prepare some tea right away.
Shinobu Kocho: You're still hurt, so please don't push yourself too much.
Lyria & Vyrn: ...
Despite their host's good intentions, (Captain) and company are unable to shake off the feeling that something is off.
With the woman's strangely stubborn refusal to spare any flowers still on their minds, the crew settle in to spend the night at the village.

A Poison for Monsters: Scene 3

Shinobu goes out in the middle of the night to take a closer look at the monster-repelling flowers. As a theory begins to form in her mind, she notices the man from earlier in the day and overhears that he plans to sell the flowers at a high price to other villages. Shinobu pretends to be unsuspecting of their plans and agrees to accompany the man and his friends. However, despite the flowers, they find themselves surrounded by monsters in the forest. Shinobu uses the soil she collected from the village and tests out a new poison against the monsters.

Shinobu Kocho: ...
The crew graciously accepts the elderly woman's hospitality and rests for the night.
Once everyone is asleep, Shinobu quietly gets up and slips out of the house to the entrance of the village.
Shinobu Kocho: (Even if we can't take any of the flowers, I might still be able to get a few hints for the poison from looking at them. I'm not about to let this opportunity slip by.)
Shinobu Kocho: (I should at least note the characteristics of the flower...)
Shinobu takes out her notebook and begins to make a sketch of the flower, under the dim light of the lantern she brought with her.
Shinobu Kocho: (But I can't shake off the feeling that I've seen this flower before. Sometime after I came to this world...)
Shinobu Kocho: (Oh! I remember now. It was the day I exterminated monsters in the forest with (Captain) and the others...)
Shinobu Kocho: (There were some flowers at the town's florist that looked very similar to these, especially around the calyx.)
Shinobu Kocho: (But that's odd. If this flower is available in town, then why is it that only the ones in this town have monster-repelling properties?)
Shinobu Kocho: Hm?
Monster: Groooar...
Shinobu Kocho: (A monster's heading this way. At this rate it'll come right into the village.)
Monster: Grr!
Shinobu Kocho: Oh!
The moment the monster steps into the village, it jumps as if pushed away by something and scampers back into the forest.
Shinobu Kocho: (Looks like this village does repel monsters... and with something quite powerful at that.)
She slowly walks to where the monster had stopped a moment ago.
Shinobu Kocho: (People come in and out of the village through this area, so there aren't a lot of flowers blooming here. Was the monster repulsed by the smell?)
Shinobu Kocho: (Hm? Up close, the soil seems rather light in color...)
She brings her lantern closer to the ground, noticing that the soil inside the village has a different shade than what is outside.
Looking around, Shinobu realizes it isn't only at the entrance, but that all of the soil where the flowers surrounding the village have been planted is a lighter hue.
Shinobu Kocho: (So the difference is in the soil? That's why the lady couldn't give us the flowers...)
Shinobu Kocho: Hm?
Man's Voice: Hey, careful not to chop off the roots. It'll be useless if it withers.
Shinobu Kocho: (This voice... Could it be...)
Recognizing the voice, Shinobu turns toward it.
After retreiving a sample of the soil and storing it in a small bottle, she silently tiptoes in the direction of the intruders.
On the outskirts of the village, three figures huddle in the dark, whispering fiercely to one another.
Slouching Lackey: Boss, this pot's just about full!
Glowering Lackey: Same here. Ain't this enough?
Burly Man: Yeah, should be. All right, let's cut through the forest and make our way back then.
Shinobu Kocho: (It's the man from earlier today. Looks like he brought his friends to help repot the flowers... It seems they're loading them all onto a wagon.)
Shinobu Kocho: (They couldn't get permission to take the flowers, so they're stealing them? I can't possibly let them get away with that.)
Slouching Lackey: Heh, you're a genius, Boss. Selling these monster-repelling flowers to villages under attack is gonna earn us some real cash.
Burly Man: Heh heh, what did I tell ya? As long as you've got these, you can go practically anywhere without havin' to worry 'bout getting attacked.
Burly Man: Everyone's gonna be fightin' over them—who doesn't wanna be safe from monsters? They'll be payin' us in gold bricks! Gahaha...
Shinobu Kocho: Oh, wow! You mean these flowers can keep all those monsters away?
Burly Man: Whoa!
The large man jumps at the sudden interruption and falls hard on the ground.
Burly Man: Wh-who the heck? Where'd ya come from?
Shinobu Kocho: Oh, don't worry about that. It's not important.
Shinobu Kocho: Are you transporting these flowers to villages in need so you can save them?
Burly Man: Wha? Er... yeah, that's right. We're really nice merchants, ya know.
Shinobu Kocho: That's wonderful! Please, allow me to assist you. Let's be friends!
Burly Man: F-friends?
Slouching Lackey: Hey Boss, the girl's a real looker! We could probably get a decent price off her. Whaddya say we take her to the traders?
Burly Man: Kehehe... Yeah, this one's an easy target. Let's get her to come with us.
Shinobu Kocho: What's this? Are you keeping secrets from me? What are you talking about?
Burly Man: Oh, it's nothing.
Burly Man: So you wanna come help us, missy? We'd really appreciate it! Right, boys?
Slouching Lackey: Yeah, really 'ppreciate it! Kehehe...
Glowering Lackey: Right, so why don'tcha hop on the wagon? Wouldn't want ya to get lost along the way.
Shinobu Kocho: Oh my, that's very kind of you! Then if you wouldn't mind.
Once Shinobu is safely seated in the wagon, the men snicker among themselves and continue on their way.
Flying Monster: Bzzz...
Crawling Monster: Slither...
In the forest, Shinobu's shoulders tense slightly as she senses a number of eyes on them from multiple directions.
Burly Man: You scared, missy?
Shinobu Kocho: Yes... I didn't think there would be so many monsters in the forest.
Glowering Lackey: Ya don't hafta worry 'bout a thing! We've got so many of these flowers in the cart, the monsters wouldn't dare!
Shinobu Kocho: Oh, that's right! I guess we don't have to worry about monsters attacking us then!
Shinobu Kocho: But I wonder why the lady at the village didn't want to give them away.
Slouching Lackey: She obviously wanted to keep 'em all for herself, that's why!
Burly Man: Yeah, hard to believe there're baddies like her out there, eh? People are gettin' attacked while she's sleepin' like a log!
Burly Man: These flowers should be planted everywhere so everyone can be safe and happy.
Shinobu Kocho: That sounds marvelous! It'd be so nice if everyone could be happy like that!
Burly Man: Right? That's why we—
Shinobu Kocho: That's why the lady decided not to give you any of the flowers. Isn't that right?
The Men: ...!
Burly Man: (What's with this girl? She seems different from just a second ago...)
Shinobu Kocho: I'd been wondering for a while now. You have so many flowers here, but the monsters are still closing in on us.
Shinobu Kocho: See there? The nice man pulling the wagon. There's one right at your feet.
Glowering Lackey: Huh?
Crawling Monster: Slither...
Glowering Lackey: Aaaugh! Get away from me!
The glowering man shrieks as the monster tries to crawl up his legs. He frantically kicks it away.
Shinobu Kocho: There's more, you know. Three to the left, two to the right. Maybe about five, just right up ahead.
Shinobu Kocho: Oh dear, four more of them are close behind us! It seems they have us completely surrounded.
Burly Man: What! B-b-but that's impossible, we've got the flowers with us...
Shinobu Kocho: Are you sure these flowers are capable of repelling monsters?
As if in response to Shinobu's question, the monsters show themselves, coming out of the shadows from every direction.
Monsters: Groooar!
Burly Man: Eeek!
Slouching Lackey: This is bad, Boss! We're gonna be monster feed!
Shinobu Kocho: Oh my! I wasn't aware that none of you could fight in the least!
Shinobu makes a graceful leap, hovering in the air for a moment before landing softly in front of the sniveling men.
Shinobu Kocho: You just proved for me that these flowers have no effect on the monsters. Thanks to that, now I have evidence that what works is this.
With a flick of her wrist, Shinobu neatly tosses the bottle of soil she had prepared earlier into the wagon.
Shinobu Kocho: I'm afraid this is only a prototype I made with the ingredients I had on hand, but I'm glad I can test this new poison out right away.

A Poison for Monsters: Scene 4

The men follow Shinobu's advice and return the flowers to the village. At Shinobu's prompting, the old woman reveals that the monster-repelling properties lie in the village's soil, where someone who was once the master of the island's monsters now rests. Though the woman never gives out the flowers for fear it could lead to unnecessary casualties due to their myth, she decides to give Shinobu some of the village's soil, thus allowing Shinobu to complete her poison against monsters.

Shinobu Kocho: This is a pleasant surprise. Despite not being complete, the poison is already proving to be quite effective.
Shinobu Kocho: We're safe now, everyone!
Shinobu Kocho: Hm?
Shinobu turns to look back at the men, only to find herself alone. Nothing but the fresh tracks of wagon wheels mark the presence of her short-lived company.
Shinobu Kocho: Oh dear. Did they leave while I was fighting? Quite the troublesome bunch, aren't they...
Burly Man: Just who the heck is that girl! How can she be that strong?
Burly Man: Yo, stop slackin' and run faster! Things won't be pretty if it gets out that we stole these flowers!
Glowering Lackey: Easy to say, Boss... We're the ones pullin' the wagon!
Slouching Lackey: Huff... Huff... But we've gotten pretty far already. There's no way she could...
Burly Man: Ergh!
Jumping nimbly from tree to tree, Shinobu catches up to the men in no time. She swoops down, taking them by surprise, and swiftly restrains their movements.
Shinobu Kocho: That wasn't very nice of you, leaving me behind like that. Weren't you going to take me to the traders?
Burly Man: Eeek! Sh-she's on to us!
Shinobu Kocho: Please, can you quiet down a little? If you raise your voice like that, the monsters might find us again.
Burly Man: You two get outta here! If we safely get the flowers to 'em, we can still earn some—
Shinobu Kocho: Oh my! That's very noble of you, to sacrifice yourself for your friends. What a wonderful boss!
Shinobu Kocho: But are you sure you want to do that? Didn't you just see that those flowers have no effect on monsters whatsoever?
Shinobu Kocho: Besides, you got so flustered from encountering a few monsters back there. Do you really think you can get out of this forest all by yourselves?
The Men: Eeek!
Shinobu Kocho: I don't have to spell it out for you, do I? There's only one way for you to get out of this forest alive...
Shinobu Kocho: You'll have to travel with me, since I'm the only one who can deal with the monsters.
Burly Man: ...
Burly Man: I'm sooorry! I don't wanna die... Mercy, please!
Shinobu Kocho: I'm not the one in charge of these flowers, so I'm afraid it's not me you should be apologizing to.
Shinobu Kocho: You're going to return to the village and apologize properly to the lady there. Aren't you now?
Burly Man: O-of course!
Left with no other choice, the men stay under the protection of Shinobu and pull the wagon back to the village.
At dawn, the three thieves arrive at the elderly woman's house to apologize for stealing the flowers, as well as for the rough behavior the previous day. The flowers are returned to their original places soon after.
Vyrn: Wow, I can't believe so much happened while we were sleepin' last night!
Lyria: If you'd let us know, we could have helped catch the bad people...
Shinobu Kocho: I only found them stealing by coincidence, and I didn't want to wake any of you after our long day yesterday.
Old Lady: I can't thank you enough, young lady. Thank you so much for catching the thieves and bringing the flowers back to the village.
Shinobu Kocho: Not at all. Are you sure it's all right to just let them go like that though?
Old Lady: The flowers are back where they belong, and I believe the men have already learned their lesson thanks to you.
Vyrn: That's pretty nice of ya... I mean, wouldn't it have been dangerous if the flowers didn't make it back? What if monsters started comin' in here?
Old Lady: Well... I suppose so...
Shinobu Kocho: ...
Shinobu Kocho: Ma'am, if you don't mind, I have a question about how this village repels monsters.
Shinobu puts a small glass bottle packed with soil on the table.
Lyria: What is it?
Shinobu Kocho: It's soil from this village. I collected a sample of it when we were replanting the flowers.
Shinobu Kocho: If I'm not mistaken, what's protecting this village from monsters isn't the flowers... It's the soil, isn't it?
Old Lady: ...!
Vyrn: Wha? What're you talkin' about?
Shinobu Kocho: After taking another look in the daylight, I realized that the soil inside the village is a slightly different color.
Shinobu Kocho: I took the liberty of mixing the soil's components with some poison from wisteria flowers, and it seemed to work against the monsters.
Shinobu Kocho: That's when I knew that the soil in this village must be special.
Old Lady: Sigh... I must say, I am beyond surprised. It seems you've figured it out in a single night.
Vyrn: Huh? You mean the flowers weren't what was keepin' the monsters away?
Lyria: Then... how did the flowers come to be so famous for repelling monsters?
Old Lady: You see...
Shinobu Kocho: Please, there's no need for you to talk about it if you'd prefer not to.
Shinobu Kocho: I didn't bring up the matter because I wanted to blame you for not explaining everything to us.
Shinobu Kocho: I just want to know more about the soil here.
Shinobu Kocho: A poison effective against monsters will save the lives of many people living in fear. That's why I have to make it.
Shinobu Kocho: Please, ma'am. Will you tell me about the secret behind the soil?
Shinobu bows her head.
Seeing the young lady's honest determination, the elderly woman lets out a sigh, relaxing her shoulders.
Old Lady: Very well. I will explain this village's circumstances.
Old Lady: Long ago, someone we call the master who governed all of the monsters on this island lived here.
Old Lady: This village is built on the very land where the master now rests...
Old Lady: It may have been due to the components in the master's body, or perhaps it's an effect of the magical power he possessed... I'm afraid I'm not certain of the details.
Old Lady: But since his passing, the soil of this village has harbored a mysterious power that keeps the monsters of this island far away.
Lyria: So that's how the village is repelling monsters...
Old Lady: Yes. In exchange for living under the protection of the master, our ancestors have always watched over this land, from generation to generation.
Old Lady: The flowers are, so to speak, a camouflage so that our soil doesn't get stolen. Digging up the master's grave would surely incur divine punishment.
Shinobu Kocho: I see. The people of this village must treasure the master and his legacy very much.
Old Lady: Hehe. Young lady, I'm sure you already figured out the reason for these flowers when you recognized the soil for its properties.
Old Lady: Why did you go out of your way to take back the flowers when you knew they had no effect on the village regardless?
Shinobu Kocho: Why, for the same reason you refuse to give out any flowers, of course.
Old Lady: No matter the reason, I'm afraid I can't give out any of the flowers. Especially if it's to protect people from monsters...
Shinobu Kocho: We mustn't let anyone get hurt as a result of this monster-repelling myth. We have to keep them from taking the flowers to prevent any innocent victims.
Shinobu Kocho: It's because the flowers are only a camouflage that they should be kept away from people. That's why I went after the thieves.
Old Lady: ...!
Old Lady: You truly are a kind soul. Your wisdom and strength are commendable.
Shinobu Kocho: A kind soul... I hardly deserve such words.
The woman takes Shinobu's hands and gently gives them a squeeze.
Old Lady: Young lady, I'm very touched by your actions.
Old Lady: If the village's soil can be of help to you, then I will be glad to share a little of it with you.
Shinobu Kocho: Huh? Are you sure it's all right?
Old Lady: Certainly, though I will have to ask you not to speak of its power to anyone. But I know you will keep our secret for us.
Shinobu Kocho: Of course. Thank you very much!
Lyria: That's great, Shinobu!
Shinobu Kocho: Indeed. This will definitely help us in our battles to come.
After receiving a small amount of soil, Shinobu and the others say goodbye to the woman and the village.
It doesn't take long for Shinobu to finish creating a poison to use against monsters, securing her a new way to fight. After all, the power of a Hashira knows no boundaries—not even between different worlds.
