A Festival Night to Remember

Sierokarte has asked the crew to undertake an escort job, and the crew heads to a mansion belonging to a rich merchant on a certain trade island. They are greeted by the household maid, who asks the crew to serve as bodyguards to the merchant's young daughter as she enjoys a local festival. The crew have their work cut out for them, as the island is crawling with mercenaries hired to target the young lady to gain leverage over the merchant family.

(Captain) and crew have come to a certain town to undertake a job for a wealthy merchant. As is often the case, Sierokarte introduced the crew to the request.
The crew arrives at the merchant's mansion to hear the details of the job.
Vyrn: We heard from Knickknack that this was going to be an escort mission.
Worrisome Maid: Thank you very much for coming all this way. Please allow me to explain the job in the lord's stead.
Worrisome Maid: We would like to ask your crew to escort the lord's daughter, as bodyguards.
Silva: His daughter...
Silva: Would that be her, peering at us through that door?
Little Lady: ...!
Worrisome Maid: My lady, please! I do recall asking you to wait in your room!
Little Lady: But... I only thought it proper to introduce myself, seeing as they will be the ones to serve as my escort...
Lyria: Oh, how thoughtful! My name is Lyria. Nice to meet you!
Little Lady: How do you do, Lyria? I hope we can get along.
Silva: My, how very polite for someone her age! I'm Silva, a sniper. Nice to meet you.
Silva: We are to be her bodyguards, you said? It seems to me that the household is not lacking in its own guards.
Vyrn: Yeah, there're a lot of tough-lookin' mercenary fellas all over the place...
Worrisome Maid: Yes, well about that...
Little Lady: No need to be so hush-hush about it. I understand what's going on. So please, tell them.
Worrisome Maid: Right... Well this may turn into a bit of a long story, but please allow me to tell you a little bit about the situation on this island.
The maid explains to the crew that the island is located in an advantageous position, allowing it to serve as a sort of trading post for other nearby islands.
Worrisome Maid: Our island attracts all sorts of people and goods. Unfortunately, some of those people are less than savory...
Worrisome Maid: The lord is the wealthiest man on the island, and as such commands a fair deal of authority here. He has banded together with some other merchants to establish rules in an effort to get rid of crime.
Silva: Ah, I think I get the picture. So now the household is being targeted by the very people he's been working to stave off?
Worrisome Maid: Correct... And at this time, my lady has become a target for many who are willing to use her as leverage to threaten the lord...
Vyrn: Oh geez, what a dastardly scheme...
Worrisome Maid: Yes, quite. And because of this, my lady has not been able to leave the mansion at all as of late.
Silva: That must be so tough for a girl of her age... I can't imagine not even being able to go outside for a stroll.
Little Lady: More than myself, I am more concerned for my father. It has been quite taxing for him as well.
Silva: You're very considerate, thinking of your father like that. I'm sure he's very proud of you!
Little Lady: ...
Worrisome Maid: The lord regrets that he cannot even let her go outside for festivals and the like.
Worrisome Maid: This time, we would like to allow her the opportunity. Would you all please keep watch over her as she enjoys the next festival?
Vyrn: We can't very well say "no" to that, now can we, (Captain)?
(Captain) nods, and smiles at the young girl.
Little Lady: Wonderful! Thank you very much, skyfarers. I've been wanting to go out for a festival for so long...
Lyria: Leave it to us! We're gonna make sure you can have the time of your life!
Vyrn: All right, let's come up with a plan of attack for this thing! Tell us what you wanna do first!
Little Lady: Okay!
Worrisome Maid: ...
Silva: Though young in appearance, our captain has the full trust of many. You don't have to worry.
Silva: Would you have us watch over her on our airship? Though, I suppose it would not be wise to try getting her there, considering the situation...
Worrisome Maid: Oh, my apologies. Please excuse my manners.
Worrisome Maid: In truth, I do not doubt the ability of your captain nor your crew. It is just... I am worried for my lady...
Worrisome Maid: She is so young, and harbors nary a rebellion of any kind. She listens to her father without even a touch of selfishness.
Silva: It did appear that she is a very well-behaved child.
Worrisome Maid: One day, I told her about the many memories I have of the festivals on the island.
Worrisome Maid: Ever since then, she has only spoken of how much she desires to go out to one herself.
Silva: You've chosen the right people for the job. We'll make sure that she has a great time.
Worrisome Maid: Thank you so much. My lady is in your care.

A Festival Night to Remember: Scene 2

(Captain) and the crew plan their route around the festival grounds with the young girl. When asked about what she wants to do at the festival, the girl mentions that she would like to wear a yukata. While the rest of the crew returns to the Grandcypher to retrieve the garments, Silva stays behind to keep watch over the girl. Silva notices that the girl may be hiding something from them, and in an effort to prioritize her safety, gently convinces the girl to share her secret goal for the evening—visiting a crafts stall to buy a ring.

The little lady of the house shows her new bodyguards, (Captain) and crew, to her room. A map of the town's shopping district is laid out on her table.
Lyria: Wow, you've been doing a lot of preparation for the festival! It looks like it covers a huge area of the town too!
Little Lady: The festival was established when we entered into peaceful relations with a nearby island. Our islands had been fighting for a long time.
Little Lady: The merchants in the shopping district bring out special stalls, and um... They put a big stage right here.
Vyrn: A stage, huh? I bet there are a lotta street performers and singers going up there!
Little Lady: Have you ever watched a street performer, (Captain)?
  1. I have!

Choose: I have!

Ulamnuran is a crew member, Any version of Carmelina is a crew member

Vyrn: Hehe, you know, we actually have some of them among our own ranks!
Little Lady: Oh, how fun!
Lyria: And look, there's goldfish scooping, a shooting game, a target game... Oh, and so much food too! Yakisoba, cotton candy, and crepes all sound really good right now...
Little Lady: Cotton? You can eat cotton at a festival?
Lyria: Well, it's a sweet candy that only feels like cotton! It's like eating a cloud!
Vyrn: If we're talking about candy, then we've gotta try the candy apples!
Little Lady: So is that a kind of candy that only looks like an apple?
Vyrn: Nope, it actually is an apple! It's all covered in sugary-sweet goodness.
Silva: ...
The girl listens with wide eyes as Lyria and Vyrn regale her with their festival knowledge.
Silva: So now that you know a little more about what to expect, what would you like to do first? Is there a stall you would like to visit?
Little Lady: Well...
Silva: Mm.
Little Lady: There are just so many I want to go to... I can't possibly decide which to visit first...
Silva: Oh?
Little Lady: Ah, I know!
Little Lady: Do you all know about um... yukata?
Vyrn: We don't just know about 'em, we have our own!
Little Lady: Well, if it isn't too much to ask, do you think I could try wearing one too?
Little Lady: I heard a merchant from Auguste say that you can't go to a festival without one.
Vyrn: I see! And he has a point! When going to a festival, you just gotta dress the part!
(Captain), Vyrn, and Lyria return to the Grandcypher to gather some yukata.
Silva remains at the mansion with the girl. She has lost herself in the map, so Silva calls out to her.
Silva: Little miss?
Little Lady: Oh, yes! I'm sorry, it's just that looking at the map is so much fun!
Silva: Oh, not at all! I'm sorry for startling you like that. There's something else I would like to ask you.
Silva: I get the feeling that... Well, there is something else you wish to accomplish at the festival.
Little Lady: Ah...
Silva: Don't worry, I'm not trying to scold you, so please relax.
Silva: I know very well that girls your age like to keep their own secrets.
Silva: If you were to try to do something without letting us know, or if you were to go off on your own, that would make it rather difficult for us to protect you, right?
Silva: So for your sake and for the sake of those who love you so dearly, won't you at least tell me what you really want to do? I promise to keep it a secret between us and the crew!
Silva bends down to meet the girl at eye level. They glance at the door, making sure that it is shut. The girl then whispers to Silva.
Little Lady: Actually... There is a ring being sold at the festival that I would like to buy.
Silva: Oh, a ring? So that would mean we need to visit one of the craft stalls. Do you know where they will be located?
Little Lady: ...
Little Lady: Um, I thought you would ask me why I want a ring...
Silva: That's something you want to keep a secret, right?
Silva: I don't mean to take any bit of enjoyment away from your festival experience.
Silva: That's what we promised when we decided to protect you.
Little Lady: Thank you, Miss Skyfarer.
Silva: Of course! I just don't want you to wander off to the craft stalls on your own.
Silva: So let's go together, okay? I'll keep it a secret from the maid too, of course.
Little Lady: Okay!
As they wait for (Captain) and the others to return, Silva and the young girl attempt to determine the location of the craft stalls.

A Festival Night to Remember: Scene 3

The group heads to the festival grounds. They soon encounter a stall selling Auguste fried squid. The household maid offers to wait in line to buy some squid for everyone, so Silva takes this chance to escort the girl to the craft stalls. While the girl is browsing for the perfect ring, Silva notices the presence of would-be assassins and quickly subdues them. Silva is embarrassed to find her yukata in bad shape after the tussle.

Dressed up in their finest yukata, (Captain) and the crew tasked with keeping watch over the merchant's daughter head to the festival grounds together with her and the house maid.
Worrisome Maid: My lady, please make sure you stay close by the skyfarers.
Little Lady: Yes, I will.
Silva: There are so many people out and about, so why don't we hold hands so that you don't get lost in the crowd?
Little Lady: Okay!
Vyrn: Whew, I know we could kinda tell just by lookin' at the map, but this festival really is massive!
Lyria: I don't think we could even possibly see every stall...
Lyria: If you start to feel tired or if your feet start hurting, just let us know! We'll find a spot to take a break.
Little Lady: Okay, thank you, skyfarers!
Hands grasped tightly, Silva walks beside the nervous young lady. The crew starts by surveying the stalls lined up before them.
Little Lady: Oh, is that the shooting game?
Vyrn: It is! Whaddya say, Snipes? Wanna give it a try?
Silva: No, that's okay. I wouldn't want to put the poor fellow out of business.
Lyria: Yeah, Silva would easily be able to win all of the prizes!
Little Lady: Really?
Lyria: Yup! Silva really is an amazing sniper. If her eyes can see it, and they can see a lot, she hits it.
Silva: Oh, Lyria... Aren't you exaggerating a little bit?
Silva: Ah, and there's a candy apple stand. Will you be going to get some, Vyrn?
Vyrn: Don't even have to ask!
Vyrn: But uh... Where is the stand?
Silva: Right over there, see? At the end of this street.
Little Lady: Hmm?
Vyrn: Oh, you're right! I'm amazed you could see it from here.
Lyria: You see? What'd I tell you about Silva's eyes?
The crew approaches the candy apple stand.
Lyria: What's going on at the stand next door? Just look at that line!
Lyria: Hm... Fried squid, "Imported from Auguste," it says...
Worrisome Maid: Auguste and this island are quite far apart. It's quite rare to see fresh seafood products from there around these parts.
Lyria: That's a good point! Normally, they would have to be dried and preserved for transport...
Vyrn: Looks like they made a special arrangement for the festival!
Silva: ...!
And it's a favorite of ours. Why don't we try some out?
Little Lady: Yes, I would love to!
Worrisome Maid: In that case, please leave the waiting in line to me.
Lyria: I'll go with you! You might need more than two hands to get some for everyone.
Leaving the squid to Lyria and the maid, the group begins to browse different stalls.
  1. I saw that wink...

Choose: I saw that wink...

Silva: Oh, so you noticed! I think Lyria has caught on too.
Silva: There's something that the little lady hopes to accomplish in secret.
Silva: Let's take this opportunity where the maid is not with us to go get what you've been wanting to get.
Little Lady: Okay!
(Captain) and Vyrn do not pry too much. They all head toward where the craft stalls are located.
Vyrn: Whoa! I've never seen any stall at a festival sell anything this pricey before!
Little Lady: The island is famous for its gemstones. These craftspeople and their shops have been an important presence here for a long time.
Vyrn: Gotcha! And I guess a festival is as good a time as ever to sell loads of their wares!
Silva: All right, let's get to looking for a ring.
Little Lady: Yes!
The young girl carefully examines the various rings on display.
Little Lady: ...
Silva: ...
Silva: (This takes me back... I remember going to festivals with Cucouroux when she was younger. She made the same kind of face trying to decide what she wanted to get.)
Silva: (Hehe, she would always try to determine which of the cream puffs had the most filling just by looking at them...)
Silva is alert to her surroundings in a way as not to worry the young girl accompanying her. The sniper identifies a faint sound.
Silva: (That sound!)
Silva grasps and twists the arm of a man passing behind the girl.
Assassin: Guh!
From his hand drops a loaded gun, the firing pin primed for a shot. (Captain) and Vyrn take up a defensive stance.
Silva: (There are at least two others!)
Silva: (Captain), Vyrn! I leave this one to you!
Vyrn: You got it!
(Captain) apprehends the man, and Vyrn helps the young lady get away to safety. Silva gives chase to the other would-be assassins.
Silva: Don't even think you'll be getting away!
Silva grabs an ornament hanging in front of one of the stalls and aims for one of the assassin's companion's heads. With a mighty blow, she is knocked out cold.
Hired Blade: Damn!
With no where else to run, Silva easily subdues another one of the men.
Silva: You might be good at blending in, but that seems to be the extent of your skills.
Hired Blade: Gah!
Silva apprehends all of those who were after the merchant's daughter.
She delivers them over to the island's security forces. (Captain) meets her there after delivering the first assailant.
Silva: Phew!
Vyrn: Heyyy, Snipes! Are you okay?
Silva: Yes, I'm fine. And the little lady?
Little Lady: I'm okay. Um... are you hurt anywhere?
Silva: Just a few scratches. It's nothing serious, so don't worry.
Little Lady: That's good. Your yukata is all messed up, so I thought something might have happened...
Silva: Messed up?
Silva: Wha!
Just as the young lady points out, Silva's yukata is a bit worse for wear.
Silva: Ugh... I can't believe it. Dressed like this...
Silva: In front of all these people...
Vyrn: Hey now, I think they understand. They saw everything that just went down, you know.
Silva: Sniff... Yes... I suppose you are right...
Worrisome Maid: My lady!
Lyria and the maid come rushing toward the group. The maid grasps the young girl tightly in her arms.
Worrisome Maid: Sniff... Sniff...
My lady, you're safe!
Little Lady: D-don't cry, please. The skyfarers all kept me safe.
Worrisome Maid: Sniff... Skyfarers, how can I thank you?
Silva: We were just doing our job! But you know, that fuss sure ate up a lot of our time...
Vyrn: It's gotten pretty dark... We should probably think about heading back to the mansion.
Little Lady: That's okay, I had a ton of fun! Thank you for protecting me, skyfarers!
Not letting their guards down for a moment, the crew escorts the merchant's daughter back to the mansion.

A Festival Night to Remember: Scene 4

Upon returning to the mansion that night, the young girl completes her secret goal by gifting the ring she chose to the maid. The attendant would often tell the young girl stories about her own festival experiences when she was younger, and had mentioned losing a precious ring that she had gotten at a festival long ago. This is the girl's way of repaying the woman for her kindness. The scene reminds Silva of similar experiences she had with Cucouroux and Camieux long ago. To finish the evening, the crew watches the fireworks from the mansion garden, snacks in hand.

Little Lady: We're back!
Worrisome Maid: Phew... I'm glad we made it back safely.
Worrisome Maid: Those who were caught... I can't help but think they were just the underlings of some other mastermind...
Worrisome Maid: I don't think you should be going out again anytime soon.
Little Lady: ...
Worrisome Maid: Oh, skyfarers, you must all be hungry! Please allow me to prepare something!
Vyrn: Oh, that'd be great!
Little Lady: The festival... Because of me, we couldn't all have a good time...
Silva: I don't think that's entirely true. It was fun while it lasted, but we did what we had to do to keep you safe.
Lyria: That's right! I can tell that the maid really cares for you.
Silva: And now... Why don't you finish your own little mission?
Little Lady: Ok!
After waiting for a while with the girl, the crew is called into the garden by the maid.
Vyrn: Wow, look at all this food! Did you make all of this yourself?
Worrisome Maid: Together with the kitchen staff, as a way to say "thank you" for keeping our lady safe.
Lyria: I think it's us who should be saying "thank you"!
Little Lady: Um...
Worrisome Maid: What is it, my lady? Don't tell me, are you hurt?
Little Lady: No, that's not it. Umm, please take this!
The young girl thrusts a clasped hand toward the maid. She opens her palm to reveal the ring.
Worrisome Maid: This is...
Little Lady: Remember? You told me that when you went to the festival all those years ago, that there was a ring that you bought?
Worrisome Maid: ...
Little Lady: You found one that you really liked, but then you lost it...
Little Lady: So I wanted to get you a new one... as a present...
Worrisome Maid: My lady...
Worrisome Maid: The ring that I lost... It was nowhere near as beautiful as this one!
Little Lady: Really?
Worrisome Maid: Yes... And I'll be sure to never lose this one. I will treasure it always, for as long as I live, my lady.
Little Lady: Yes, yes! Please do! Thank you so much for everything you do for me!
The young girl embraces the maid with a tight hug. Silva looks on with a smile.
Silva: (Just like Cucouroux... She wouldn't be after those cream puffs for herself, but would opt to give them to me and Camieux.)
Silva: (And she had so much fun while doing so. I think she enjoyed seeing the two of us happy...)
Lyria: Oh, that sound...
Vyrn: Oh hey, it's fireworks! I see now why you invited us outside for the snacks, Miss!
Worrisome Maid: I would be overjoyed if you enjoyed our snacks with the fireworks. And there's even more where that came from!
Silva: Now these are some VIP seats!
A fitting end for an eventful day.
For the young lady and her maid—and for (Captain) and the crew, it was not one they would soon forget.
