Past and Present

(Captain) and the crew head for one of the Zeyen holy grounds. There, they find a slumbering primal beast. They learn of the beast's promise through Sophia's ability and then head to a nearby village to get more information.

Vyrn: Hey! Are we almost to the War ruins Siero told us about?
Sophia: I think so. Based on the map we got from her... Huh? Where'd the map go?
Lyria: Here, Sophia! You dropped it!
Sophia: What? I'm sorry! I almost got us lost...
Vyrn: Boy... Sophia seems reliable enough, but there's something a little off about her...
(Captain)'s crew is heading for some ruins of the War with Sophia the Zeyen priestess.
According to Zeyen teachings, the ruins are holy grounds, and the high priest's successor must make a pilgrimage there.
Lyria: But I wonder what the ruins are really like.
Lyria: They say they're forlorn and still bear the marks of the War...
Vyrn: Come on... The War with the Astrals happened hundreds of years ago.
Vyrn: Don't you think any obvious signs of the battle would be long gone by now?
Sophia: There are indeed some places where the signs are pretty much gone, but there are always traces of the War, however faint.
Sophia: We, the Zeyen priests and priestesses, can read these traces and learn of the past.
Vyrn: I don't really get it, but it sounds impressive! Don't you think so, (Captain)?
Sophia: Ha-ha... If you don't get it, I'm not sure whether to be happy about your compliment...
Sophia: Huh? What's wrong, Lyria? Why did you stop?
Lyria: In the ground... I feel... the presence of a primal beast nearby.
Vyrn: What? There's a primal beast buried in the ground?
Lyria: Yes... but it seems to be resting in the form of a primal crystal.
Vyrn: I see. Well, these are ruins of the War. I guess it's possible.
Sophia: But according to the map, the ruins of the War are supposed to be way past this forest.
Vyrn: Really? Then why's there a primal beast sleeping here?
Lyria: Hmm... All I can tell you is that it's nearby.
Sophia: Ha-ha... Looks like it's time for the Zeyen priestess to step up.
Vyrn: Huh? What are you going to do?
Sophia: I'm going to read the energy traces left on the land. Then I'll know everything that happened here.
Sophia: Vestiges of Astral power infusing this land... Gather to my staff and reveal history as it unfolded here!
Sophia: ...!
Lyria: Hey! Are you okay, Sophia?
Sophia: Thank you, Lyria... but don't worry. This happens all the time.
Sophia: More importantly... this primal beast seems to have made a promise.
Lyria: A promise?
Sophia: That's right. This primal beast was apparently not suited for combat.
Sophia: So before the decisive battle, it was told to wait here by the Astral that was its master.
Sophia: And so here it lies, still waiting for its master's return.
Lyria: My goodness... That's so sad...
Sophia: Yes... And now that we know, I can't just leave it here.
  1. Let's do something about it.
  2. Let's get more information.

Choose: Let's do something about it.

Sophia: I agree. I'm sure there's something we can do to help.
Sophia: We should start by going to the village to get some information.
Go to "Continue 1"

Choose: Let's get more information.

Sophia: That would be best. It would help a lot if we could find out more about the Astral who owned this primal beast.
Sophia: Let's head for a nearby village first. Someone might know something.

Continue 1

Vyrn: It's settled then. Now let's get through this forest!
Vyrn: I sense a lot of monsters nearby... Keep your guard up, (Captain)!

Past and Present: Scene 2

(Captain) and company ask the village elder about the sleeping primal beast but can't get the information they want. An imperial soldier shows up in search of information on the beast, and the crew fights the soldier to keep the beast from being captured by the empire.

The crew reaches a nearby village and visits the elder said to be the most knowledgeable person there.
Elder: A primal beast sleeping outside the village?
Sophia: That's right. Do you know anything?
Elder: I'm sorry, but I've never heard of it.
Sophia: I see...
Vyrn: Well, the War was centuries ago after all.
Vyrn: Even if that Astral somehow survived, it's been hundreds of years, so I doubt that—
Sophia: No... I won't give up yet! There must be something we can do!
Sophia: Besides, I can't just leave the primal beast there!
Sophia: Maybe its master left something behind... I refuse to believe there's nothing here!
Lyria: Sophia?
Sophia: Elder! Anything would help! Any little thing...
Sophia: Isn't there something we could tell the primal beast? It's just been waiting there so long...
Elder: I would help if I could, but—
Imperial Soldier: Hey! What's all the commotion about?
Vyrn: Just great. What's that soldier doing here?
Imperial Soldier: Hey, geezer! You know anything about a primal beast that's supposed to be sleeping around here?
Elder: Huh? A sleeping primal beast?
Imperial Soldier: That's right. We, the Erste Empire, are looking for primal beasts to use for experiments.
Lyria: That soldier is after the primal beast!
Imperial Soldier: What was that? Do you guys know where the primal beast is?
Sophia: Yes, we do...
Sophia: I actually think we're the only ones in this village who know about it.
Imperial Soldier: Interesting. In that case, lead me to it.
Sophia: I'm afraid I can't do that.
Imperial Soldier: What did you just say?
Sophia: That beast has been waiting for its master to keep its promise. I'm not about to hand it over to the likes of you!
Sophia: If you want that beast, you'll have to go through me! Lend me your aid, (Captain)!

Past and Present: Scene 3

(Captain)'s crew wins the battle. The elder recalls a place where an Astral was apparently buried, and the crew heads there but finds no clues. Sophia laments her own powerlessness, but Lyria reminds her that there are more important things than the past. More soldiers suddenly appear.

After restraining the imperial soldier, Sophia faces the villain.
Imperial Soldier: Ugh... Damn you all. You won't get away with this!
Sophia: What information led you here?
Sophia: Do you know anything about Astrals around this village?
Imperial Soldier: Even if I did, what good would it do you?
Sophia: I want to know because I believe this is my duty...
Imperial Soldier: I don't know what you're after, but there hasn't been anything here since the War.
Vyrn: Stop acting so pompous and get to your point already.
Imperial Soldier: That is my point. Nothing's left here.
Imperial Soldier: The Astrals here were eliminated in the battle near the end of the War.
Sophia: What?
Imperial Soldier: This place is one of the few battlefields where the skydwellers were completely victorious over the Astrals.
Imperial Soldier: In addition to the primal beast, we've been looking for spoils of war, but nothing has come up so far.
Sophia: But that can't be... There just has to be something.
Elder: I just remembered something...
Elder: I've heard a legend of a place on the outskirts of the village where an Astral was apparently buried.
Elder: But this is merely a rumor, and besides—
Sophia: Where is it? Tell me!
Elder: Beyond the forest that way... but that place is—
Sophia: ...!
Vyrn: Oh! Hey! Where are you going?
Lyria: Let's go after her, (Captain)!
Imperial Soldier: Interesting...
The crew chases Sophia and reaches the place where the Astral is said to be buried, but the priestess looks distraught.
Sophia: This can't be... There's nothing... Nothing at all...
Lyria: Sophia...
Sophia: Once again I couldn't do anything...
Vyrn: What do you mean?
Vyrn: You told us you can read what happened in the past!
Sophia: Yeah... And what exactly would be the point of that?
Sophia: All that comes of reading the past is an understanding of tragedies long since over. I can't make anyone happy.
Sophia: I'm always too late. The memories always seem so close, but they're so far away...
Sophia: All I can do is watch... and it's all so meaningless.
Lyria: I don't think so!
Sophia: Lyria...
Lyria: I guess you're right about us not being able to change the past... but that's not all we are!
Lyria: I don't know my own past.
Lyria: I'd like to know more about it, but I don't see myself as unfortunate just because I don't.
Lyria: And I have all of you to thank for that... Even without a past, I have a future I can face with my friends.
Lyria: I guess you could think of it as something irreplaceable to go with an unchangeable past.
Sophia: ...
Imperial Soldier: Well? Did you find what you were looking for?
Vyrn: Wha? How did you get here?
Imperial Soldier: Unfortunately for you, I'm not the only member of the imperial army. My friends sensed trouble and came to help.
Imperial Soldier: This time I have reinforcements. Now you're going to tell us where that primal beast is!
Sophia: I still can't do that.
Imperial Soldier: I see... Then we'll just have to make you talk!
Sophia: I don't think so! You see, I found something that I can still do...
Sophia: So I can't lose here!

Past and Present: Scene 4

(Captain)'s crew forces the imperial soldiers to retreat. Sophia finds meaning in her ability to see the pasts of primal beasts and realizes what she must do.

(Captain)'s crew successfully drives away the imperial soldiers.
Then, Sophia makes an unexpected request.
Lyria: That sleeping primal beast?
Sophia: Yes. I want you to absorb it.
Vyrn: Why all of a sudden? I thought you would be against that for sure.
Sophia: I think I've been forgetting something important.
Sophia: The point of my ability to see the past isn't to save people of past days but rather to guide people into the future.
Sophia: No matter how tragic, the past can't be changed...
Sophia: But if we can only keep moving forward...
Sophia: Then I think even the ones we couldn't save in the past will head right into the future with us.
Sophia: I think the reason we Zeyens can see the past isn't to mourn what's behind us, but to build a better future.
Lyria: That's right! I think so too!
Sophia: And I don't think we should leave that primal beast here either.
Sophia: One day we'll reach the Island of the Astrals, and we should bring that beast there with us.
Vyrn: Heh-heh! Now that's a good idea! Don't you think so, (Captain)?
And so Lyria absorbs the sleeping primal beast, and the crew continues its journey toward the Island of the Astrals.
As Sophia leaves this place behind, she wears an expression of cheerful confidence.
