Together in Song - Chapter 6: Reversing the Distortion - Episode 4

Niyon and the orchestra members arrive on the island. Niyon explains that Caro had been subconsciously twisting his own magic in order to prevent the paintings from turning into monsters. Niyon begins playing her harp in an attempt to return Caro back to normal, but it's too late and Caro loses control. The islanders assist (Captain) and the others in suppressing Caro.

Elta: Caro, snap out of it!
Caro: Worthless... Worthless...
Selfira: It's no use... He won't respond to anything we say...
Vyrn: What's wrong with him? Can he not see us?
Lyria: He may have lost sight of himself. His presence feels really unstable...
Lyria: It's lost its brightness, as if it has soaked up all the sadness permeating through the entire island.
???: Correct. The mournful melody of the people has flowed into him and changed his heart.
Lyria: Niyon! Nobiyo, Novei, and the others too!
Nobiyo: We rushed here at Niyon's request.
Narita: She has something to tell your crew, (Captain). Will you hear her out?
Niyon: I'd like you all to help us calm down the primal beast.
Elta: Of course we will!
Elta: But do you know what's happened to him?
Niyon: His magic causes his creations to appear differently to each person who sees them...
Niyon: Logically, those who hate paintings see them as warped and twisted. So much so that there's not a shred of beauty left in them.
Niyon: He's been distorting his own magic in order to maintain their original form and prevent them from appearing distorted to that man... And subconsciously at that.
Selfira: That artist did mention earlier that paintings look distorted to him sometimes...
Niyon: I think that's because of the magic cast on the paintings. The man's hatred is so strong that it causes the paintings to twist and distort.
Niyon: It must have been incredibly painful having to restore the paintings, only to have them be twisted again. It's only natural that his power would start acting strangely.
Elta: I see... If Caro hadn't intervened, that artist would have long since gone around destroying all the paintings...
Lyria: Caro's so kind... He's been pushing himself just to protect that man...
Caro: To hell with Arte... To hell with art...
Selfira: So he took all that distortion upon himself, and now he's basically a personification of all the negative feelings of the islanders...
Selfira: Can't we do anything to help him? How can we turn him back to normal?
Niyon: His melody is buried in dissonance... but I can still hear it—ever so faintly.
Niyon: With some tuning we can revert the distortion of his heart, though it's a gamble.
Niyon: Even if I try to reach him with my melody, the foreign emotions within him may interfere.
Niyon: If we don't do this right, he could end up going berserk...
Elta: ...
Niyon is a crew member

Niyon: Please, (Captain). Lend me your help until I can pinpoint his melody...
Niyon is a crew member

Niyon not in crew

Niyon: You've fought primal beasts before, correct?
Niyon: Can I count on you to deal with this one?

Continue 1

(Captain) nods vigorously. They distance themselves from Caro, preparing themselves for the worst.
Niyon: Okay, here I go.
Niyon: If you will.
Novei and the other musicians begin to play along with Niyon, following her lead.
Caro: Aah... Augh...
Caro: Urgh... Aaaugh...
Niyon: ...
Caro: It...
Caro: It hurt! It was hard! I was in pain! I was lonely! I was scared!
Caro: I wanted to protect them... I couldn't protect them!
Caro: Aaahh!
Arte: Grrr...
Musician: That form... It's the same one I saw in an old painting...
Artist: What in the skies... I can't believe he really was Arte...
Selfira: He... went berserk...
Lyria: He was enduring the pain for so long... He pushed himself too hard...
Vyrn: We don't have time to sit around being sad! We gotta stop him!
Monsters: ...!
Elta: We've got a problem! Caro's rampage is attracting a bunch of monsters!
Vyrn: Looks like we gotta fight our way through!
Instrument Crafter: This is our punishment for blaspheming the great Arte...
Ceramic Artist: We're so sorry, Arte... Please grant us your forgiveness...
Elta: ...
Elta: Please lift your heads! Caro isn't blaming you!
Ceramic Artist: ...!
Elta: Even when you destroyed the paintings or flung them away, Caro only ever responded with concern for the people of the island.
Elta: He never resented or hated you. He loves you all from the bottom of his heart.
Artist: Arte... Caro...
Artist: That's right... He always had a kind smile on his face, and he never shied away from me, no matter how rude I was.
Artist: He wasn't the type to get angry or place blame on others. Even now he's just full of regret that he couldn't protect us...
Musician: Yes... Caro has done so much for us. He's given us courage in our darkest hour.
Instrument Crafter: Yeah... I bet it would hurt him to hear us say this is Arte's punishment...
Artist: Hey, you're going to save Caro, right? Isn't there anything we can do to help?
Artist: Although... There's not much we can do besides keep the monsters at bay for a short while.
Elta: That would be wonderful!
Selfira: (You're amazing, Elta...)
Monsters: ...!
Selfira: (I need to do something too!)
Selfira begins to play, and the melody composed to put even Midgardsormr to sleep causes the monsters to come to a halt.
Selfira: Now!
Artist: Right! All right, everyone. It's time to protect Caro and this island!
Islanders: Yeah!
The islanders shove aside the monsters who have been slowed by Selfira's performance.
Thus a path is cleared, and (Captain) and the crew at last confront the rampaging Caro.
Arte: Grrr...
Selfira: No turning back now...
Elta: I'll play with everything I've got.
Elta: Let's talk about the music we love so much, just like we did that one night!
Selfira: We won't let you suffer any longer... We'll save you!
Arte: Aaahh!
