A Sibling Squabble

(Captain) and the crew visit a nearby town with Vania and Veight to restock supplies. Vania gets into trouble with a hooligan and accidentally reveals that she is a vampire, but she escapes the situation with the help of a young man she had met previously. Meanwhile a mysterious figure watches the events unfold from the shadows.

After a long journey, the crew find themselves low on supplies and so head into a nearby town.
Vania: Wow! Look at that, Bloodkin! There are so many shops!
Malinda: Gyoo! Gyoo!
The town is bustling with people, and stalls line the main street in great numbers.
Rackam: Huh... A flea market. Don't see that too often.
Lyria: The shops here are selling some strange things...
Rackam: Well, a flea market is usually a place to sell stuff that you don't need anymore, so maybe that's why.
Rackam: But what seems useless at first can turn out to be a serious treasure if you give it a second look.
Vyrn: You don't say! Let's get treasure-huntin' then!
Lyria: Gasp! Now I'm seeing everything in a new light!
Vania: What's that over there!
Malinda: Gyoo!
???: Hey, Vania! Stop going off all by yourself!
Malinda and Vania try to scurry away to see the stalls, but Veight, Vania's younger brother, stops them.
After the incidents that occurred on Medvecia, Veight stayed behind to govern the island with Feldrac.
Due to the crew's efforts, the islanders of Medvecia began allowing those from the outside in, but their suspicions of mortals remained.
And so Feldrac, wishing to do away with the guarded nature of his people, gave Veight an order.
That order was to explore the outside world as his sister does and determine whether it is possible to be friends with mortals.
As luck would have it, while traveling the skies, Veight happens upon the crew and temporarily joins them.
Veight: Think of all the people! If you were to cause a scene, there would be panic!
Vania: Grr! You worry too much! Me and Malinda already thought about that!
Vania: Look, look! I'm dressed to make sure no one gets scared!
Rackam: Enough of that, you two. Your fighting is what's going to cause a scene.
Vania: Humph...
Vania looks annoyed, but wanders with the crew as they make their rounds through the market.
Rackam: These shops are something else. They've even got pricey stuff used by nobles.
Stallkeeper: What do we have here? This your first time to our flea market?
Stallkeeper: We get a lot of highborn collectors 'round these parts. When they get bored of their stuff, they give it to us.
Vyrn: Really now... Must be some generous bigwigs!
Stallkeeper: They even give away stuff most people could never afford. They lose interest, and we get their goods. Couldn't tell you what goes through rich folks' minds.
The keeper then suspiciously eyes his surroundings and draws closer to (Captain).
Stallkeeper: This is just between you and me... I hear there's one collector who'll do whatever it takes to get the goods he wants.
Stallkeeper: Robbery, kidnapping, murder... You name it... All for some collector's item.
Rackam: Well, that escalated quickly...
Stallkeeper: If you're going to be looking around these parts, best to be safe about it. Kids have a habit of disappearin'.
???: You deaf! I said stop right there, you lil' piece of...
Vyrn: What the...
???: Stop! Let go of me!
Vania: !
Vania decides she can't stand by as the young girl is abducted and plunges into the crowd of people.
Veight: Vania! What did I just tell you!
Lyria: Gasp! Please wait for us!
Rackam: We've gotta go after 'em!
Vania and Veight have already disappeared into the sea of people, but the crew gives chase nonetheless.
Girl: Give it back, you thief!
Hooligan: Tch! Shut it! I had my eye on it first, ya hear!
Girl: Aah!
The young girl, clinging to the thief's arm, is flung to the ground.
Vania: Are you okay?
Vania: And you! How could you hurt a little girl! I'll sink my teeth right into your neck!
Hooligan: What? Get outta here, you piece of garbage!
Vania: Agh!
Vania sidesteps the hooligan's attack.
However, the force of the blow knocks her hood off and lays her wings bare for all to see.
Hooligan: Those bat wings on your head... I've heard of something like that...
Hooligan: Wait! Are you a vampire!
Veight: Vania!
Damn! I'm too late!
Hooligan: Somebody, anybody, call an officer! This monster is trying to eat my eyes out! We're all gonna die!
Vania: Grr! I wouldn't do anything like that! And you're the one doing bad stuff!
The people, alarmed by the cries of the thief, turn their sights to Vania.
Townsperson 1: Vampires? Like those things in fairy tales? They're real?
Townsperson 2: Monsters, you say? But she looks like a child. Could she really be dangerous?
Townsperson 3: Dunno! But let's just capture her if she's going to be a problem.
Veight stands before Vania to protect her as the people look on with mixed interest and fear. Suddenly a voice is heard.
???: Wait a second! She was only trying to help that little girl!
A young man raises objection to Vania's treatment.
Youngin': Who cares if she's a vampire! At least she isn't hurting little kids like you, punk!
Hooligan: You want a piece of this?
Townsperson 1: H-he's right... I didn't see that little one try to hurt anybody...
Townsperson 2: Yeah! Let's catch us some bad guys instead! Like the guy who cried wolf!
Now the townspeople turn their attention to the thief.
Hooligan: Tch! To hell with all of you!
Enraged that his own people would turn on him, the hooligan flees.
The crew pushes through the crowd and finally reaches Vania and Veight.
Youngin': I thought I remembered your face...
Rackam: Hm? Hey, you were in the village with the vampire...
Vania: Oh, yeah! You said my soup was gross!
Veight: You're acquainted?
Vania explains what occurred in a village full of mortals and a lone vampire.
Veight: It really is surprising to hear that other vampires are roaming around freely... but even more so is Vania's soup...
Lyria: Because of her cooking, the villagers and the vampire were able to find common ground!
Vyrn: Even if the soup did taste a little turned...
Vania: That's not true!
Vania: Right, Bloodkin? Say it was good!
Rackam: Haha... And what brings you here? You're a long way from that village.
Youngin': Yeah... About that...
The young man explains that he's visiting for personal reasons, including finding a gift for the vampire back in the village.
Youngin': I was having a hard time trying to decide what she might like, and then I saw what was going on here. Good thing patrol didn't show up.
Rackam: I see. Thanks for helping out back there.
Vania: I know what we can do to say thanks! We'll help you pick out a gift!
Malinda: Gyoo!
Youngin': Really! That would be great!
Lyria: It's the least we can do to say thank you!
Vyrn: Yeah! You cool with that, (Captain)?
(Captain) nods in agreement.
Vania: Thank you, Bloodkin! Okay, let's get going!
Malinda: Gyoo, gyoo!
Lyria: Oh no! Vania, Malinda! Please wait for us!
And so the crew heads into the flea market to find a gift for the vampire of the village.
In the shadows, a figure hides and watches the crew from afar.
???: A real, living vampire! Heh heh, I finally found one!
The man laughs with joy and gleefully trails the crew.

A Sibling Squabble: Scene 2

As thanks for the young man's help, (Captain) and the crew agree to help him find a gift for the vampire in his village. The young man mistakes Veight for the older brother based on how the two siblings interact, offending Vania. After locating a gift, (Captain) and company decide to go see the flowers in town that are said to glow in the moonlight.

In search of a present for a vampire, (Captain) and company peruse a flea market.
Malinda: Gyoo, gyoo!
Vania: Hm? What's up, Malinda?
Malinda: Gyoo!
Vania: Oh! Good job, Malinda! Who's a good girl? You are! This hair piece is adorable!
Vania: Come here! Look, look, Bloodkin!
Vania: Ehehe! What do you think? It looks good on me, right? I'm just so cute, don't ya think?
Veight: Sigh... Have you already forgotten who the present was meant for?
Veight: This isn't an excursion to find something that suits you... We're trying to help this young man find something for the vampire in his village...
Vania: Grr... I know that! But that's not the point! You're just a big meanie, Veight!
Youngin': So... Is that guy her brother?
Lyria: Yes! They're very close!
Youngin': Having a curious sister like that must be hard for an older brother, huh?
Vyrn: Hm? You think Veight is older?
Lyria: Oh, no. Vania isn't Veight's younger sibling...
Vania: Grr! I can hear you! I'm the older one! Get it right! He's my little brother!
Youngin': What!
Rackam: Hahaha! But I know where you're coming from.
Rackam: Both of them are little rascals, but Veight is a little more on top of things and a bit calmer.
Vania: Grrr! How could you, Rackam!
Vania: Bloodkin, tell them I act like the older sibling! Come on already!
  1. It's as she says...
  2. Come again?

Choose: It's as she says...

Vania: Hah! See! Bloodkin, you rock!
Vania: No matter how you look at it, I'm clearly the older one!

Choose: Come again?

Vania: Bloodkin! Grr!
Vania: You're gonna get a spankin'! Chomp, chomp, chomp for you!

Veight: Good grief... How long is this going to last? We're not getting any younger.
Veight: If you're going to find something for yourself, do it after we've decided what present to get for the other vampire.
Lyria: Vania, we'll need you to hold on a little longer! Until we pick a present, I won't be eating anything tasty either!
Vania: If you say so, Lyria.
Vania: Okay! Now that that's settled, let's get this shopping done!
Lyria: Yay!
Youngin': Thanks! It's because of you all that I got something good!
Lyria: Ehehe! We're glad we could help!
Vyrn: We hope that'll bring a smile to her face!
Vania: I'm sure she'll be super happy to get that! After all, I was the one who chose it!
The crew escorts the young man back to the village.
Just then, Vyrn sees that the masses are now making their way outside.
Vyrn: What the? Is something happening over there?
Youngin': Yeah! Probably a flower viewing.
Rackam: A flower viewing? At this time of day?
According to the young man, there is a flower that lights up only at night near the water.
Youngin': It came as a surprise to me that the highborns who live in the forest are said to have made that area for tourists.
Rackam: Sigh... These nobles are just throwing all kinds of money at the town...
Vania: Hey, hey! I wanna see the shiny flowers!
Lyria: I-I want to see them too! Is that okay?
  1. Guess we got no choice.
  2. It's settled! Let's go!

Choose: Guess we got no choice.

Vania: Really? Thank you, Bloodkin!
Lyria: Yay! This should be fun, right, Vania?
Go to "Continue 2"

Choose: It's settled! Let's go!

Vania: Awesome! You really are my bloodkin!
Vyrn: Heh heh! (Captain) was looking forward to the flower viewing too!

Continue 2

The crew parts ways with the young man and heads for the outskirts of town to see the flowers that glow in the moonlight.

A Sibling Squabble: Scene 3

Veight scolds Vania when she tries to rush ahead of the group, causing Vania to get angry and run off with Malinda. The two find themselves lost in a forest, surrounded by a group of mechanical soldiers controlled by a man with a flute. The man threatens to take Vania with him by force, but she and Malinda team up to battle the robots.

The crew joins the immense crowds who are headed over to see flowers said to radiate only in the shadows.
Lyria: Wow!
Rackam: Oh, watch it!
Rackam: Lyria, gotta keep your eyes peeled. If you get swept away in this crowd, you're a goner.
Vyrn: Agh!
Vyrn: Darn it! Something got caught on my tail! Help a dragon out!
(Captain) reaches a hand out to assist Vyrn who is either caught on something or simply being taken by the crowd.
Vyrn: Phew... You saved me.
Vyrn: But by the looks of things, we won't be able to see anything, much less a shining flower.
Rackam: Even so, we can't go back now. Not with this crowd...
Rackam looks around and cringes at the sight of all the people bunched up around the crew.
Vania: Uh... Veight, how much longer?
Veight: Sigh... As if I know. But at this pace, much, much longer...
Vania: Huh? Do you hear that weird sound? Is it coming from over there?
Veight: Hey!
Without a care in the skies, Vania carves a path forward.
Veight goes in search of his sister and finally grabs her arm to stop her.
Veight: Vania! Where are you going?
Vania: I heard something weird coming from over there, and I got a little curious...
Veight: Sigh... And what would you do if you got lost all alone?
Veight: Think about what you do before you do it!
Vania: Grrr!
Vania: You don't have to be so mean about it! All you ever do is criticize me and tell me everything I do is wrong! You're just a big bully!
Vania: I hate you, Veight!
Vania: Go away!
Veight: Vania!
Vania escapes Veight's grip and disappears into the sea of people.
Malinda: Gyoo!
Veight: Yes, please find her. I'll catch up.
Malinda: Gyoo, gyoo!
Malinda goes off in search of Vania while Veight takes in a deep breath of air.
Veight: (A bully? I'm just worried about her...)
Lyria: Veight! We finally found you...
Rackam: Hm? Hey, where are Vania and Malinda? Weren't they with you?
Veight sighs before shaking his head at Rackam.
Veight: I got into an argument with Vania. Happens all the time though. Just need to give her some room.
Vyrn: What! We need to find her now!
Veight: I'll go get her. It's not like we can all navigate through this wave of people.
Rackam: You have a point. But will you be okay alone?
Veight: Humph. Of course I will. I know everything about Vania.
Rackam: If you say so... We're going to move forward with the crowd. Let's meet near the water.
Veight: Will do.
And so Veight parts with the crew and goes off in search of Vania.
Vania: What's wrong with him! Veight always has something to nitpick!
Malinda: Gyoo...
Vania: You think so too, right, Malinda?
Vania sits under a tree in a forest on the outskirts of town after losing her way.
Vania: I know he worries about me, but he doesn't have to say everything in that tone.
Malinda: Gyoo...
Malinda: Gyoo?
Vania: Malinda, what's wrong?
Vania: Who's there?
Approaching footsteps can be heard. Vania looks around frantically for their source.
???: ...
From a bush comes soldier-like entities made of metal.
Without so much as a word, they surround Vania and Malinda on all sides.
Malinda: Gyoo...
Vania: Malinda, come here. These people are giving me bad vibes!
Vania can only look on as the silent sentinels draw closer.
From behind them emerges an unfamiliar face.
Pretty Fellow: Look what I've found.
Why hello, my dear. Apologies if my servants scared you.
Vania: Servants? These soldiers?
Pretty Fellow: Oh, yes. They're just my little machines. They do as they're told and protect me.
Vania: Oooh... And what do you want with me?
Pretty Fellow: I saw you save a little girl this afternoon. I was so moved by your courage.
Pretty Fellow: And I felt compelled to get to know you better... Even become your friend.
Pretty Fellow: What do you say? Would you like to discuss our friendship over a cup of tea?
The man extends a smile and a hand to Vania, but she turns away.
Vania: Um. Nope. You give me the heebie-jeebies.
Vania: Let's go, Malinda.
Robot: ...
The sound of a flute echoes through the dark forest and the once-still soldiers begin moving in unison.
The sentinels now block Vania from leaving.
Vania: Move it! I said I'm not going anywhere with you!
Pretty Fellow: Oh, but you are. Even if that means I need to take you... with force.
Malinda: Gyoo, gyoo! Gyoo!
The flute sounds and the mechanical soldiers draw their swords.
Pretty Fellow: Now come with me quietly. You don't want me to hurt you, right?
Malinda: Gyoo...
Vania: Grr! Why is everyone always getting in my way!
Vania: We're leaving, Malinda! We'll take them all out if we have to!
Malinda: Gyoo, gyoo!

A Sibling Squabble: Scene 4

The metallic soldiers turn out to be made of silver, the equivalent of poison to Vania. Veight appears and tries to help Vania and Malinda escape, but they are cornered at the edge of a cliff, and Veight faces the enemies alone to allow the others to get away. Vania and Malinda manage to reunite with (Captain) and the crew and inform them that Veight has been taken captive.

Vania and Malinda do battle with a great many metallic soldiers.
And then Vania begins to notice cuts and scrapes on her body.
Vania: But... why? There's something wrong with me...
Malinda: Gyoo, gyoo!
Pretty Fellow: Heh heh. My soldiers are made of silver.
Vania: Silver?
Pretty Fellow: Yes, my dear. The equivalent of poison to you, correct?
Malinda: Gaaaruuu!
Pretty Fellow: Tch! Bloody beast! Be gone from my sight!
Robot: !
Malinda: Garuu!
Malinda: !
Robot: !
Malinda: Gaaauuuh...
While Malinda brings down some of the machines, new ones take their place and ultimately overthrow her.
Malinda: Gyoo...
Vania: Malinda! Hold on!
Vania tries to rouse her fallen companion.
But no matter how many times she calls out to her, Malinda no longer responds. Vania turns ghost white.
Pretty Fellow: Hahaha! My dear, this is just too tragic!
Pretty Fellow: I truly wanted to take you away unharmed, but look what happened because you chose to fight. Oh well. I won't kill you. Yet...
Robot: !
As Vania tries to hold it together, one soldier swings its sword down on her head.
???: Vania!
Robot: !
Veight: Tch! Stay away from Vania!
Robot: !
Vania: Veight! How did you find me...
Pretty Fellow: Hahaha! This is perfection! Lady Luck smiles down upon me!
Veight turns his furrowed brow to the elated man.
Veight: Bastard! This will cost you your life!
Pretty Fellow: Heh heh. Calm yourself. The both of you are invited to join me at my estate!
Robots: !
Veight: Ha! I will die before I accept an invitation from filth like you!
Vania: Veight, stop!
Vania: Those mechanical soldiers are made of silver! If they touch you, they'll drain you of power!
Pretty Fellow: Now then, come quietly!
The silver sentinels uniformly move closer. A frustrated Veight considers his options.
Veight: We don't have a choice then! We're leaving! Hold on, Vania!
Vania: O-okay!
Pretty Fellow: Hahaha! What fun! Letting my prey roam free before the butchering is but another pleasure!
Pretty Fellow: This forest is my garden. There is no place you can hide.
Veight picks up the unconscious Malinda and runs off into the night with Vania.
Robots: !
Veight: Damn! They're fast!
Vania: Veight! Over here!
They lose the soldiers attempting to block their path and flit into the depths of the forest.
Vania: Agh! This is a dead end!
They have inadvertently left the forest and find themselves now on a horrifyingly steep precipice.
Vania: Hm? What is that shining thing over there?
Vania points at something off in the distance that emits a faint glow.
Veight: That's probably... somewhere near the water.
Vania: Then if we can get close enough, we might find the others?
Veight: That's what I was thinking... But...
Vania looks at Veight, who is examining the cliff below.
Veight: (If we were to fall from this height, even our vampiric bodies would not be safe...)
Veight: (In addition, Vania's weakened state would pose a great danger...)
Robot: !
Veight: Damn! They've already found us!
Vania: Wh-what are we going to do?
Veight: Vania... You have to wake Malinda up. I'll stall until she comes to.
Vania: What? You can't fight those things!
Veight: There's no other choice. Even if I can't destroy them, I can get us the time we need!
Veight makes his last statement before confronting the silver soldiers.
Vania: Malinda, wake up! We need you!
Vania: Please, Malinda! We'll all be taken prisoner!
Malinda: Gyoo...
Vania: Malinda! Please transform right now!
Malinda finally awakens and upon hearing Vania's cries for help, she transforms into a large dragon.
Malinda: Graaaa!
Vania: Thanks, Malinda!
Veight: Damn it! Persistent bastards!
Robot: !
Vania: Veight! Hurry! Grab my hand!
Veight: Tch! Just a little more!
Robot: !
Veight: !
Vania: Veight?
Veight: Ggh... Gaaaah!
From Veight's mouth comes a stream of red blood. Vania looks on with shocked eyes as her younger brother is stabbed through the stomach.
Malinda: Grroo!
Veight: Malinda... Please... Save her...
Veight: Save... Vania... Take her...
Malinda: Gruu...
Veight: Gah... Run, fool!
Malinda: Groo!
Malinda cries in agony for what she must do; she takes Vania and soars high into the sky.
Vania: Stop, Malinda! You can't leave Veight! Veight!
Malinda: ...
Vania: No, no, no! Malinda! Go back!
Vania: Veight! Veight!
Lyria: Huh?
Vyrn: What's up, Lyria?
Lyria: Did you hear that?
The crew look up into the night sky as they await Veight and Vania.
Rackam: What's that? It's heading straight for us...
Malinda: Groo!
Vyrn: That's Malinda! Hey!
Rackam: Hm? But where's Veight?
The waving crew realizes that the flying dragon is missing one passenger.
Malinda lands, and the crew is horrified to see Vania covered in battle scars.
Rackam: What the heck happened! And where's your brother?
Malinda: ...
Vania: Sniffle...
Vyrn: Vania...
Vania: Sob... Veight... Veight...
Vania: They took my Veight! Waaa!
Consumed with worry and concern, (Captain) takes Vania into a hug.
The crew is silent save for the cries of a little vampire whose brother has been ripped from her life.
