Say Goodbye to the Past

Volenna, who's nursing Sara back to health, tells (Captain) and company how worried she is about not being good enough, but they reassure her. She considers joining the crew once Sara recovers.

Sara and Volenna, the Priestess of the Dunes and her bodyguard, decided to seal away a primal beast that was flooding Sable Island.
On their way to the shrine where they intended to confine it, the two met (Captain) and company. Together they successfully seal away the beast.
After a bit of travel with the crew, Sara falls ill and is forced to return to Sable Island with Volenna to recuperate.
Worried about Sara, (Captain) and company go to visit her during her long period of recovery.
Sara: Thank you for coming to see me. I'm so glad to see you, Lyria. And of course you, (Captain)... Cough...
Lyria: Yeah! I'm glad to see you too! We were worried when we heard that it's taking so long for you to recover.
Sara: Oh, sorry... Sorry for worrying you...
Sara: Hee-hee... Seeing you guys has really cheered me up. I'm sure I'll be better soon. Cough.
Volenna: Sara. Please rest. I know you're excited about your friends coming to visit, but you'll make yourself worse if you get too excited.
Volenna: (Captain) and the others will still be around for a while yet. You can talk again once you wake up.
Sara: Yes... Cough. Sorry, Lyria. I'm just going to lie down again for a while.
Lyria: Oh, please don't worry about it! Let's talk again another time. Have a good rest, Sara.
Sara goes to lie down, and (Captain) and company leave the room with Volenna.
Volenna: ...
Lyria: Are you all right, Volenna? You don't look so good.
Volenna: Oh, it's nothing. I'm just thinking is all.
Lyria: Um... I know you're really worried about Sara.
Lyria: But you've got to take care of yourself. You won't be any good to anyone if you get ill too.
Volenna: Yes... You're right. Burning myself out wouldn't do anyone any good.
Volenna: But I don't feel like I can take proper care of Sara. I'm pathetically inept.
Vyrn: Hey, don't be so hard on yourself! You're doing your very best to take care of Sara.
Volenna: Well, it's the least I can do to atone for my past sins.
Volenna: I met Sara just after the previous Priestess of the Dunes passed away, back when she was still just a young child.
Volenna: That child had to take up a heavy and fatal duty. She was chosen as the next Priestess of the Dunes.
Volenna: It was cruel, but I, like everyone else, thought it was necessary for the protection of Sable Island.
Lyria: ...
Volenna: Parting is painful if you know someone well. And as she was destined to die anyway, any relationships she had would have only caused her more pain.
Volenna: With that in mind, I distanced myself from Sara.
Volenna: For her part, she restrained herself and refused to rely on other people.
Lyria: But that sounds so lonely!
Volenna: Yes. Now that she's been released from her duties, I want her to be just a bit more selfish—you know, the way children are supposed to be.
Volenna: But Sara still refuses to rely on anyone, even me, in spite of her illness. She continues to carry on alone.
Volenna: I know she's not used to relying on anyone, but perhaps she senses that I'm just not reliable.
Vyrn: No, of course not! Sheesh, Volenna, it sounds like all that nursing is really taking a toll on you.
Volenna: Perhaps... This really isn't like me.
Volenna: But when I saw Sara talking to Lyria and (Captain) so cheerfully...
Volenna: I thought that things would have been easier for Sara if I were more like (Captain).
  1. It's all because of the bad environment.
  2. Good for you.

Choose: It's all because of the bad environment.

Lyria: That's right, Volenna! Both you and Sara have bad memories of Sable Island.
Lyria: So being here brings back those memories, and you end up stuck in a vicious cycle.
Lyria: It's no good to have your mind trapped here like that.
Volenna: My mind trapped?
Volenna: I think you guys might be right.

Choose: Good for you.

Volenna: Wha?
Vyrn: Yep, (Captain) might be on to something!
Volenna: Vyrn... Even you agree?
Vyrn: Heh-heh... Don't you see? You're right down at the bottom of that hole right now, so there's no way to go but up!
Vyrn: So right now you might be nursing Sara and worrying, but things can't get any worse!
Vyrn: Or at least I hope they can't... Well, I can definitely say you're better off being optimistic, right?
Volenna: I suppose you might be right.

Volenna: It's hard to do much about guilt related to the past, but I need to keep moving forward.
Volenna: You guys have really helped me to bring things into focus. Thank you.
Lyria: Hee-hee... It was nothing really.
Volenna: That attitude of yours is probably the reason you can help people like me.
Volenna: Once Sara recovers, I think I just might join you on your travels.
Volenna: It would definitely keep me entertained at the least.
Lyria: Wow, that sounds good! You'd be most welcome!
Volenna: I think having that to look forward to will help Sara get better too.
Vyrn: Yeah! It's easy to get bummed out when you're ill for so long. You need something to look forward to!
Volenna: I'll talk to you about this properly when the time comes, (Captain).
Volenna: Uh... I need to give Sara her medicine when she wakes up. I'm gonna go get some water, so wait here.
Vyrn: Ha-ha! Volenna seemed different from before. She was just plain concerned about Sara.
Lyria: Maybe... But I'm not sure if she's actually changed. I think she was always a kind person.
Lyria: Hmm... I think Volenna was trapped by Sara's duties as a Priestess of the Dunes too.
Lyria: I hope Sara gets better soon.
Volenna, once nothing more than a tough bodyguard, has begun to change so she can offer Sara real protection.
Surely she'll find a way to save Sara from her illness.
