Enigma of the Scythe Wielder

Vaseraga meets the crew during a battle on a certain island. When he learns their goal, he joins so he can strengthen his scythe by defeating primal beasts. And yet the nature of his organization remains a secret.

The crew meets a warrior called Vaseraga during a battle against a primal beast.
After the battle ends, he approaches the crew to strike up a conversation.
Vaseraga: Despite the strength of that beast, you all were certainly able to keep a level head.
Vyrn: Huh? What's with the sudden observation, Spiky?
Vaseraga: Well, we were just involved in a life-and-death struggle... I figured it'd have more of an effect on you.
Vyrn: Not us! We've fought plenty of primal beasts.
Vyrn: And we're more than used to danger!
Vaseraga: Then it's your choice to continue on such a dangerous journey?
(Captain) tells Vaseraga that the crew is bound for Estalucia, Island of the Astrals.
Vaseraga: Estalucia? Oh, you're serious.
Vyrn: Of course! (Captain)'s no liar!
Vaseraga: So you want to get through the Grim Basin and make it to the Island of the Astrals? That must be why you're hunting down primal beasts and collecting Sky Map fragments.
Vaseraga: An unusual goal to be sure, but oddly it doesn't seem reckless.
Vaseraga: (Captain), you obviously have the power to overcome crises. But I wonder if you can handle any disaster.
Vaseraga: That little dragon and that girl with the blue hair... What would you do if you had to abandon one of them?
Vyrn: Hey! Don't ask somethin' like that! (Captain) would never abandon one of us!
Vaseraga: But that time will come. Just as it did for me.
Lyria: What do you mean, Vaseraga?
Vaseraga: I've clearly said too much. Just forget it
Vaseraga: (Captain), I have a proposal. Let me join you on your journey.
Vyrn: Oh? Is somebody a little jealous of our crew?
Vaseraga: Not really... But I can't just let children continue a dangerous journey on their own.
Vyrn: Don't sell us short! And stop treating us like kids!
Lyria: I think it's a wonderful idea. I'm sure you would be amazingly helpful, Vaseraga!
Vyrn: But are you sure you can do that, Spiky?
Vyrn: I mean, it doesn't seem like you're traveling because you want to.
Vaseraga: You're right. I'm already a member of a certain organization, so I'm not necessarily a free agent.
Vaseraga: But it would benefit me to fight alongside you.
Vyrn: You'd definitely give us more muscle. That weapon you're carrying also looks pretty amazing...
Vaseraga: You think so? This was made to defeat primal beasts. Take a look.
Vaseraga: Great Scythe Grynoth! Drink the blood of the primal beast to strengthen your edge!
The weapon shines in response to Vaseraga's call, a display of its true power.
Vyrn: Wow! That's incredible!
Vaseraga: This scythe grows sharper as it feeds on beast blood, and one of my missions is to keep it well fed.
Vyrn: So is sharpening that thing your main objective?
Vaseraga: Perhaps.
Vaseraga: I should mention eventually we will have to part ways, but I'll help you until then.
Thus the warrior Vaseraga, wielder of a great scythe, joins (Captain) and company on their journey.
This mysterious man and his fearful weapon will soon come to get the crew out of many tight spots.
Lyria: Hmm...
Vyrn: What's on your mind, Lyria?
Lyria: That thing Vaseraga said a while ago, about how (Captain) might have to choose whether to protect me or Vyrn some day...
Vyrn: Is that bugging you? But there's no way (Captain) would abandon friends.
Lyria: Um... It was bothering me a little. But there's no reason to bring it up, right?
  1. I want to protect you, Lyria.
  2. I want to protect you, Vyrn.

Choose: I want to protect you, Lyria.
Vyrn: Naturally! I can watch out for myself anyway!
Lyria: Hehe... I'm so happy to hear that...
Vaseraga: Then I'll protect the little dragon.
Vyrn: No need for that! I've got my own back!
Vaseraga: No need to overdo it. You can hide in my pocket if things get rough.
Vyrn: Wha? I'll just keep my head outta your filthy pockets if you don't mind!

Choose: I want to protect you, Vyrn.
Vyrn: Wait a minute! You meanie! Almost sounded like you said I'm weak!
Lyria: Haha... Oh, Vyrn!
Vaseraga: Okay... Then I'll protect the blue-haired girl with my great scythe.
Continue 1
Vaseraga: Of course it would be best if nothing dire were to ever happen.
Vaseraga: (Captain), if you're ever unable to handle everything on your own, let me know. Do not hesitate.
Vaseraga: You're strong, and yet you know your limitations... But there will come a time when...
Vaseraga: Never mind. I have said too much.

Adding Fuel to the Fire

The crew reach a town where there seems to be a conflict between two factions, which they're dragged into when Vaseraga is mistaken for a hostile agent. When he's attacked by the militia, he has to fight.

The crew heads for a certain town, but everyone is shocked to find the city thrown into a chaotic conflict.
Vyrn: Yikes... This is awful...
Vaseraga: The residents here are fighting each other. Could this be their doing...
Young Man: Hey! You lot! Are you with us or them?
Vyrn: Say what? Calm down, buddy!
Young Man: I don't know you... Are you outsiders? Wait.. They must have brought in agents!
Vaseraga: Hold on. We're just skyfarers passing through. We have nothing to do with whatever's going on here.
Young Man: I guess I can trust you...
Young Man: After all, why would they hire more agents while the fight's already in their favor...
Young Man: So you're really just outsiders... Sorry about the cold welcome.
Vaseraga: What's going on in this town? It looks like a war zone.
Young Man: Yeah... This town was split into two factions a little while ago.
Young Man: Something triggered a fight between them, and this is the result... They say it was all started by such a trivial thing too.
Young Man: We're at a big disadvantage right now... Fortunately no one has been killed yet.
Vaseraga: Tell me more. What set the fight in motion?
Militia 1: There he is! He's the only one left!
Militia 2: It's time to end this battle! Let's go!
Young Man: Ugh! Damn them!
Vyrn: Hey! Those guys are coming after you!
Militia 1: Who the hell are these people! You bring in shady reinforcements?
Young Man: Wait! They have nothing to do with this!
Militia 2: Ha! You must have hired yourself some agents! Let's take them all down and get this over with!
Vaseraga: Looks like we can't talk our way out of this. We have no choice. Get ready, (Captain).

Adding Fuel to the Fire: Scene 2

A young man resists the militia and tells Vaseraga he's only fighting because a battle broke out. When backed into a corner, the man tries to release monsters on the town, and the crew has to stop him.

(Captain) and company are able to drive off the militia that came for the young man.
They press the young man for details, but he's not exactly calm.
Young Man: Ugh! Damn them... I knew they didn't want to talk it out!
Vaseraga: Why are you fighting? Do you want neighbors to hurt each other?
Young Man: Why am I—hell if I know! The battle broke out, so all I could do is fight...
Young Man: And it won't end until one side wins! If we lose, who knows what will happen?
Vaseraga: And what are you willing to do for that victory?
Young Man: Grr!
Vyrn: What're you trying to get at, Spiky?
Vaseraga: I know better than most what happens to a man when he won't give up on victory even when he's cornered.
Young Man: What do you mean?
Vaseraga: I'm saying you need to find a better way.
Vaseraga: You stink of monsters. Are you planning to release them in the town?
Young Man: ...!
Young Man: I have no choice! There aren't any men left who can fight!
Young Man: What can one man accomplish? I have to do whatever it takes!
Vaseraga: I'll say it one more time. Find a better way.
Young Man: Or else what? Are you going to stop me? Go ahead and try! Get 'em!
Monster: Gwoargh!

Adding Fuel to the Fire: Scene 3

Vaseraga speaks of his past to try to stop the young man. He then goes to the man's base when he notices that someone is deliberately prolonging the battle. When he draws his scythe, the change in one man's expression reveals that this battle is the Foe's work.

Young Man: I need to end this. We thought we could win at first, so I rallied everyone to battle...
Vaseraga: I was once in the same situation as you.
Vaseraga: I've lost fellow skyfarers due to my own arrogance.
Vaseraga: The regret I felt was pure torture. I sought power in response... and I got what I thought I wanted through countless rituals.
Vaseraga: My body no longer feels pain or much of anything else. Would you pay the same price I did for power?
Young Man: I can't stop fighting no matter what you say...
Vaseraga: These are just words. I don't expect to stop you with them.
Vaseraga: Someone tried to stop me as well, but I didn't listen. Just like you.
Young Man: But how could you understand? You're already strong!
Vaseraga: Not at all. I'm powerless. I don't even have the power to persuade one young man.
Vaseraga: Leave this to me, boy. I'll find a way to end this. That's part of our job.
Vyrn: You can say that, but I don't know if this'll be settled so easily.
Vaseraga: Someone is fanning the flames to keep this battle going.
Vaseraga: Once the agitator is found and defeated, that'll be the end of this conflict.
The crew follows Vaseraga's suggestion and heads for the young man's base.
The sudden arrival of outsiders creates quite a stir there.
Vyrn: Oh boy... How do you plan to find anybody in this crowd, Spiky?
Vaseraga: The crowd will only make it easier. Watch.
Vaseraga: Great Scythe Grynoth! Drink the blood of the primal beast to strengthen your edge!
The great scythe lights up in response to Vaseraga's call. Most of the onlookers just watch with puzzled expressions.
But one man's expression suddenly changes.
Man: You! It can't be...
Vaseraga: And there you have it. The Foe was behind this all along.
Man: Ugh...
Vaseraga: You can't talk your way out of this. Only the Foe knows about our weapons.
Man: Urgh...
Man: Gwoagh!
Vyrn: Whoa! That guy showed his true colors! (Captain), let's get 'im!

Adding Fuel to the Fire: Scene 4

With the agitator defeated, the battle ends. As Vaseraga drinks, he speaks of his organization's formless Foe. He asks (Captain) to help him fight this nemesis when the time comes, but then he cuts himself off.

With the agitator defeated, no one's left to incite any fighting. The battle ends for now, but it seems like the true cause has not yet been dealt with.
The crew leaves the town, but Vaseraga still has something on his mind that night.
Vaseraga: ...
Vyrn: Hey, Spiky! What are you doing all alone?
Vaseraga: Drinking. This drink is apparently a specialty of the town we just left.
Vaseraga: ...
Vaseraga: (Captain), I've heard that what happened in that town is happening on other islands as well.
Vyrn: Say what?
Vaseraga: This seems to be the work of my organization's enemy, the Foe. They plant seeds of conflict in the hearts of men.
Vyrn: Really? And what does this Foe wanna do?
Vaseraga: We don't yet know why agitators are being sent to various places.
Vaseraga: What I'm more worried about is the conflict erupting in these places. Fighting without reason.
Vaseraga: Things aren't too bad yet. We can end the battles by stopping the agitators, the tangible causes of the problem.
Vaseraga: But things will get more complex once the battles caused by them start intertwining with each other...
Vaseraga: Even this scythe, Grynoth, won't be able to stop a war like that.
Vyrn: That sounds pretty complicated.
Vaseraga: And yet the truly horrifying part comes later. (Captain), what will you do? Stopping the agitators won't stop the war, you see.
Vaseraga: We'll be fighting something that can't be stopped with weapons or words, and doesn't even have a physical form.
Vaseraga: In fact, our organization's Foe will eventually cease to exist in any way, preventing us from interacting with it.
Vaseraga: That's why we must stop this Foe while we can. And to do that... I must ask for your help.
Vaseraga: Never mind. Forget what I just said.
Vaseraga murmurs that he's sick of feeling like the battle will never end, and he pours himself another glass.
At the thought of the wars being incited by the Foe, (Captain)'s fists clench in frustration.

Strong Yet Wise

At the Knickknack Shack, Vaseraga hands a parcel to Sierokarte. When the crew return from their delivery mission and explain that the neighboring town's under lockdown, Vaseraga accompanies them on a second visit to investigate.

Vyrn: Over there, Spiky!
Monster: Groooar!
Vaseraga: I've got this.
Monster: Grrr...
Lyria: Ah! Vaseraga, behind you!
Vaseraga: Humph.
Monster: Grrr...
Vaseraga: That should be all of them.
Vyrn: Phew... Spiky's a powerhouse as always!
Lyria: Yeah! He took them all down with one swing!
Vaseraga: Taking out a bunch of monsters is nothing to gloat about.
Vyrn: Hey, what is it you call your scythe again?
Vaseraga: Great Scythe Grynoth.
Vyrn: Right! I bet you're the only one that can swing around a huge weapon like that!
Lyria: They got a few attacks in from behind though. You didn't get hurt, did you?
Vaseraga: I'm fine. My body is—
Vyrn: Augmented! Right?
Vaseraga: Indeed.
Vyrn: Well, I guess we've done our part for this monster cleanup assignment. Time to report it back at town!
(Captain) and company return to town to report an assignment completed.
Lyria: Looks like our next job is to deliver this package to the neighboring town.
Vyrn: Boy, the assignments are just flooding in today, huh. The town doesn't seem to be that far; let's get right on it!
Vaseraga: The neighboring town, eh?
Lyria: Huh? Are you going off somewhere, Vaseraga?
Vyrn: That's not the way to the town!
Vaseraga: The job's a simple delivery. I'm sure you guys can handle it alone.
Vyrn: You're not coming along, Spiky?
Vaseraga: I'll be waiting in this town.
Be careful out there.
Vyrn: And off he goes. I guess Spiky just needs his alone time every so often.
Lyria: Well, he does have to take care of his Society business too.
Lyria: Anyway, let's finish up the mission at hand!
All alone now Vaseraga pays a visit to the Knickknack Shack in the corner of town.
Sierokarte: Ah, Vaseraga! Good to see you!
Vaseraga: You're around today? Good.
Sierokarte: (Captain) and the others aren't with you? That must mean...
Vaseraga: Right. The usual, please.
Vaseraga hands a parcel to Sierokarte.
Sierokarte: Sure thing. I'll make sure it gets there.
Sierokarte: You know, some of them are really close by. Why not meet them directly?
Vaseraga: No thanks.
Sierokarte: Okay, it's your call.
Sierokarte: But there is something I think you should know...
Vyrn: Spiky! Oh, you're here too, Knickknack?
Sierokarte: Hello!
Vaseraga: Did you finish the job?
Lyria: We couldn't get into the town.
Vaseraga: Hm? Why not?
The crew explains that soldiers have surrounded the entire perimeter of the neighboring town.
Vyrn: They're not letting in any outsiders.
Vaseraga: The town is on lockdown?
Sierokarte: So it's finally come to that, huh?
Lyria: Siero? What's wrong?
Vaseraga: Tell me what you know, Siero.
Sierokarte: Sure. I was going to tell you earlier, but...
Sierokarte: Lately there's been conflict between the people and the soldiers of that town. Disputes have been breaking out all too often.
Vyrn: Are those the soldiers that were surrounding the town?
Sierokarte: It seems so. The situation's gotten pretty serious lately.
Lyria: The people of the town must have it hard...
Sierokarte: With trade cut off, I'd imagine every town in the region is affected.
Vyrn: Hmm... That can't be good.
Vaseraga: Will you be going, (Captain)?
  1. Yeah!
  2. Hmm...

Choose: Yeah!
Lyria: Of course! We can't just sit idly by when people need help!

Choose: Hmm...
Vyrn: What's wrong? You don't sound too sure.
Lyria: We have to help people who are suffering!
Vyrn: Lyria's right! Let's go!
Continue 1
Vaseraga: I will accompany you.
Lyria: Yay! It's always reassuring with Vaseraga around!
Sierokarte: So you'll be joining this one?
Vaseraga: Yes. I can't ignore what's happening.
Vaseraga: Besides, I need to do my part as a member of the crew. They need my help now, and I'm here to give it.
Sierokarte: I see. Well, do be careful.
Lyria: The town should come into view soon.
Vaseraga: Stop. I hear something.
Vyrn: Sounds like something's going down. Is it coming from the town?
Lyria: Ah! Over there!
Soldier 1: Prepare yourselves!
Agent 1: There's no way we're gonna just bow down and give in to your demands!
Soldier 1: You insolent cur!
Lyria: This looks pretty serious.
Vaseraga: This must be what Siero meant when she mentioned a struggle between the soldiers and the people.
Agent 1: Cripes! How many are there? No matter, we'll just have to bring out our ace in the hole!
Monster: Groaar!
Soldier 1: What the—They've unleashed monsters!
Soldier 2: Aagh! What have you done?
Monster: Groaaar!
Lyria: Oh no!
Vaseraga: There'll be many pointless deaths if this keeps up.
Vyrn: We need to get in and stop those monsters now!

Strong Yet Wise: Scene 2

An injured soldier guides the crew to the baron's mansion, explaining that the citizenry have hired agents in revolt against the baron. As Vaseraga argues with the soldiers about why the common folk would do such a thing, word comes in of an attack by agents and monsters.

Agent 1: Who in the skies are you guys?
Agent 2: Hey! This is our cue to hightail it out of here!
Vyrn: Ah! They're getting away!
Vaseraga: Let them. Taking care of the injured comes first.
Soldier 1: Ngh...
Lyria: You're right!
Hey, are you okay?
After treating the wounds of the injured soldiers, the crew pays a visit to the baron's mansion in town.
Soldier 1: Thank you. You've saved our lives.
Vyrn: Oh, it's nothing. Can you tell us what the deal is with all this fighting?
Lyria: The streets we passed by on the way here all felt so empty. There was hardly anyone around...
Soldier 1: For some time now, certain groups have been rising up in revolt against the baron. Civil unrest has been at an all-time high.
Soldier 1: They've been calling in bloodthirsty agents. Rumor has it they might even be plotting the baron's assassination.
Lyria: Assassination? My goodness!
Vyrn: They were even using monsters back there. Those guys are serious.
Soldier 1: The baron's considering countermeasures, of course, but he still needs more time.
Lyria: Countermeasures? What kind?
Soldier 2: Hey! Don't tell 'em that!
Soldier 1: A-ah! Sorry.
Vaseraga: ...
Soldier 1: Point is, we're doing our best to preserve the peace in town, but their attacks never stop.
Soldier 2: At this rate the citizens are going to get caught in the cross fire.
Vyrn: Oh, that can't be good!
Soldier 1: But you folks are pretty tough! What do you say to teaming up with us?
Lyria: Umm, we're...
Vaseraga: Wait.
Vyrn: Hm? What's wrong, Spiky?
Vaseraga: My companions here couldn't even enter the town earlier. Are you the ones that closed it off?
Soldier 1: Indeed, that was us.
Vaseraga: What for?
Soldier 2: Well, we can't afford to have ruffians coming in from the outside and taking advantage of the situation.
Soldier 1: We also don't want to risk letting the leader of these revolts escape.
Vaseraga: ...
That so?
Lyria: What's wrong, Vaseraga?
Vaseraga: Tell me: why are the people revolting to begin with?
Soldier 1: Huh? What is it you're trying to say?
Vaseraga: Why would the baron's people want him dead? There must be a reason.
Soldier 2: Why you...
Soldier 1: Are you trying to accuse us of something?
Vyrn: H-hey, Spiky! I think you might be ruffling their feathers...
The soldiers grow suspicious under the pressure of Vaseraga's interrogation.
Soldier 2: You're with those agents, aren't you!
Soldier 1: You spies!
The previously friendly soldiers suddenly change tune and now draw their swords at the crew.
Vyrn: Wait right there! We aren't—
Soldier 1: Silence! Who hides their face beneath a helmet to begin with? We should've suspected something was up!
Vaseraga: You do have a point...
Lyria: Vaseraga, no! Don't say that!
Soldier 2: Silence!
Vyrn: Whoa, what's going on over there?
Soldier 3: We need backup!
Soldier 1: What's going on?
Soldier 3: The agents are attacking again! This time they've come in full force, and they've even brought their monsters! We must go at once!
Soldier 2: Dammit! Move out!
Lyria: Did they say monsters are in town again?
Vyrn: That can't be good. We should go take a look.
Vaseraga: Hold it!
Vyrn: Make it quick, Spiky! The clock's ticking!
Vaseraga: What do you plan on doing when you get there?
  1. We're gonna fight!
  2. We'll deal with the monsters!

Choose: We're gonna fight!
Vaseraga: Fight who? And to what end?
Vyrn: Oy... Spiky, you've been kinda freaking me out ever since we got here. What's gotten into you?
Vaseraga: ...

Choose: We'll deal with the monsters!
Lyria: Yeah, we wouldn't want any of the townspeople to get caught up in it all!
Vaseraga: I suppose that's fine...
Continue 1
Vaseraga: Never make it your goal to crush the opponent. Violence in the name of justice loses all meaning.
Lyria: Umm... Vaseraga?
Vaseraga: Never forget what it is you wield your power for.
Soldier 1: Don't let them break through!
Agent 1: Send in everything we've got!
Monster: Groaar!
Soldier 2: Unaagh!
Vyrn: This is awful!
Lyria: We have to do something!
Vaseraga: Stay calm. Don't forget what we're here to do.
Lyria: Ah... right! Let's deal with the monsters first!
Vyrn: Right! Even the agents that have been called here are getting out of control! Let's do this!

Strong Yet Wise: Scene 3

Vaseraga fells the monsters with powerful swoops, protecting a young child from harm. The soldiers and agents begin to perceive Vaseraga as a threat and decide to take him out first.

Vyrn: (Captain)! They're coming in from the right!
Monster: Groooar!
Vaseraga: Haagh!
Monster: Grrr...
Monsters: Grrr...
Lyria: Eek! Now they're behind us!
Vaseraga: Eeyagh!
Monsters: Grrr...
Vaseraga: There's too many of them.
Vyrn: They just keep coming!
Lyria: There must be something we—
Lyria: Ah!
Child: Ngh...
Lyria: There's a little boy stuck over there!
Vyrn: Lyria! Watch out!
Monster: Grooar!
Child: Gasp!
Lyria: Eep!
As Lyria dives in to protect the child, a savage monster swings its claws at her.
Vaseraga: Ragh!
Monster: Grrr...
Lyria: Vaseraga!
Vaseraga: Lyria, watch the kid.
Lyria: Okay!
Vaseraga: Come at me! I will be your opponent!
Vaseraga: Aaargh!
Agent 1: Oof!
Agent 2: They're too strong. What's with these guys?
Agent 1: Watch out for the big guy in armor! If anything, we have to stop him first!
Soldier 1: Just as I thought! That lot's nothing but trouble!
Soldier 2: We ought to take out that armored brute first!
Vaseraga: ...
Vyrn: What's going on? The soldiers and the agents are coming after us!
Vaseraga: Things are gonna get rough. Stay sharp, (Captain).

Strong Yet Wise: Scene 4

Surrounded on all sides, (Captain) and crew find themselves in a pinch. Vaseraga demonstrates a force greater than ever before and pushes back entire waves of enemies—the impact from which puts him in severe pain.

Soldier 1: Th-they're too strong!
Agent 1: How do we even stand up to them?
The soldiers and agents all flinch at Vaseraga's overwhelming power.
Agent 2: Crud!
Soldier 3: Th-this is no time to falter! We press on together!
Soldier 2: R... Raah!
Lyria: Eep!
Child: Miss!
With the child still in her arms, Lyria is knocked away by the onslaught of soldiers.
Vyrn: Uh-oh! (Captain)!
(Captain) rushes in and pulls Lyria up by the arm.
Lyria: (Captain)... Thank you!
Vyrn: We'd better try and keep up...
Agent 1: Don't fall behind the soldiers.
Agent 2: Let's do this!
Vyrn: Yikes!
Lyria: Vyrn!
Vaseraga: Humph...
Things suddenly take a turn for the worse when the crew breaks formation as the enemy comes pouring in from all sides.
Vyrn: Lyria! (Captain)! Where are you?
Lyria: What do we do now, (Captain)? Vyrn's—
Agent 1: That lizard's with the armored freak and the others, right?
Vyrn: Aagh!
Soldier 1: You, the girl with the blue hair... If only you and your lot hadn't interfered!
Lyria: Eek!
Vaseraga: Great Scythe Grynoth!
Vaseraga: Drink in my blood and let your soul shape my blade!
Vaseraga: Aargh!
Vaseraga: Gaaagh!
Agent 1: Rgh!
Soldier 1: Ungh!
Vyrn: Wh-what's happening?
Vaseraga swings his scythe like never before and summons a whirlwind, sweeping the surrounding enemies off their feet.
Lyria: Vaseraga! He's so... powerful...
With child in arm, Lyria hides among the rubble.
(Captain) stands over the two, ready to defend them at a moment's notice.
Before long, the fierce wind dies down.
Vaseraga: Argh...
Lyria: Hm? Vaseraga?
Vaseraga: Ungh... Gah!
Lyria: Vaseraga! Are you okay?
Child: Ahh!
Lyria: Oh no!
The child clutches Lyria tightly as she runs over to Vaseraga.
Child: Mm... Uhn! Sob!
Lyria: Hey, what's wrong? Everything's okay. There's no need to cry.
Child: Booo-hooo!
The child's hysterical wailing breaks the silence that fell upon the battlefield.
Vaseraga: Rgh...
Lyria: Wait, Vaseraga! Where are you going?
Vaseraga: ...
Vaseraga does not respond to Lyria's desperate call.
Lyria: Wait, please! Vaseraga! Why won't you wait?
Vaseraga appears to be in great pain as he limps away from the scene.

Kind Yet Tragic

Even after three days of sleeping like a log, Vaseraga remains bedridden. Zeta visits the Grandcypher and wonders if the change in the shape of Grynoth is having a negative effect on Vaseraga.

The people of the town stand aghast at Vaseraga's overwhelming, almost malevolent, power.
Vaseraga: ...
Lyria: Vaseraga!
Child: Waaah!
Lyria: Yikes! What to do, what to do...
Lyria hesitates as she cannot shrug off the child clinging onto her and go after Vaseraga.
Vyrn: Wait here, Lyria! I'll go after Spiky!
Lyria: Vyrn!
Vyrn: You take care of the kid!
Lyria: Okay! Please look after Vaseraga!
Vaseraga: Ngh...
Vyrn: Wait, Spiky!
Vaseraga: Why did you follow me here?
Vyrn: Hey, is that any way to talk to a pal? There's no way I'd leave you alone when you're hurtin' like this!
Vyrn: Your armor and scythe are looking kinda off too. I can't tell what's—
Vaseraga: Back off!
Vyrn: Whoa! Okay, something's definitely not right with you...
As if being controlled by some greater power, Vaseraga raises his scythe with trembling hands in preparation to strike at Vyrn.
Vaseraga: Don't come any closer.
Vyrn: Oy! What's gotten into you?
Vaseraga: Rgh!
Vyrn: Gah!
Vyrn dodges to the side, narrowly evading Vaseraga's swinging scythe.
Vyrn: What are you doing!
Vaseraga: Sorry... But you need to get out of here now! Ugh!
Vaseraga kneels down in an effort to hold himself back.
Vaseraga: Now that I'm the threat, I don't think I'll be able to protect you anymore.
Vyrn: Are you nuts or something?
Vaseraga: Just kidding...
Vyrn: Geez, Spiky...
Vaseraga: But I wasn't kidding when I told you to back off. Get lost already!
Vyrn: Ack! I'm not kidding either when I say I can't leave you like this!
Vaseraga: That's a problem... You may be small, but I've always admired your bravery and kindness.
Vyrn: Great. So now what do we do?
Lyria: Vyrn! Vaseraga!
Vaseraga: You guys...
Vaseraga lets out an even deeper sigh at the sight of Lyria, followed by (Captain) and crew.
Lyria: Vaseraga! Are you okay?
Vaseraga: Sorry for the trouble...
With a faint apology, Vaseraga falls unconscious.
Vyrn: Any ideas on what could've happened to Spiky?
Vaseraga: ...
Vaseraga continues to groan in his sleep aboard the Grandcypher.
Lyria: He's been asleep for three days now. This worries me...
  1. I'm worried too.
  2. I wonder about his scythe.

Choose: I'm worried too.
Lyria: He looks to be in so much pain...
Vyrn: Spiky's big and strong and he acts the part... This is the first time I've ever seen him suffering so much.
???: Hey! (Captain)?

Choose: I wonder about his scythe.
Vyrn: Me too. It looks kinda weird now.
Lyria: It makes me feel uneasy. It's almost... creepy.
Lyria: I always thought it was an incredible weapon, but now...
???: Hey! (Captain)?
Continue 1
Vyrn: Hm? That voice...
???: Vaseraga's not around either. I wonder if they went off somewhere...
Zeta: Ah, there you are! What's everyone doing here?
Lyria: Zeta!
Vyrn: Good timing, Red! Something's come up!
Zeta: Huh? Why's everyone so on edge? Is that Vaseraga sleeping over there? What's up with him?
Vaseraga: Rgh...
Zeta: Whoa, what's this about?
Lyria: The truth is...
The crew explains about the abnormalities happening to Vaseraga's body.
Zeta: That's a lot to take in...
Vyrn: Does any of this ring a bell, Red?
Zeta: Nada. I've never seen Vaseraga like this either.
Lyria: I see...
Zeta: But you know...
Zeta takes note of how Vaseraga tightly grasps his scythe, Grynoth, despite lying collapsed on the bed.
Zeta: Did Grynoth change shape when Vaseraga's condition turned sour?
Lyria: Yes, it's looked like that ever since.
Vyrn: It was more like Spiky's mood changed all of a sudden when the scythe transformed.
Zeta: So that's what happened...
Lyria: Do you know something, Zeta?
Zeta: Ah, yes. Our weapons come specially provided by the Society.
Vyrn: That organization you guys belong to?
Zeta: Correct. They're pretty strict about classified info, so I can't say much.
Zeta: Either way, it's not like I know the whole story.
Lyria: I see...
Zeta: Don't be so upset, Lyria.
Lyria: But Vaseraga's—
Zeta: Geez.
Zeta: (And here I was thinking nothing could even dent your augmented body...)
Vyrn: Hm? Did you say something, Zeta?
Zeta: Ah! No, it's nothing! Anyway, I'll look into it and see what I can find.
Lyria: Thank you.
Vyrn: We're counting on you, Red!
Zeta: Just so we're clear: I'm not doing this for his sake, all right?
Zeta: This is as much of a problem for me as it is for him...
Zeta mutters under her breath as she takes a good long look at the Arvess Spear in her hand.

Kind Yet Tragic: Scene 2

Zeta, Beatrix, and Eustace discuss what could possibly be happening to Vaseraga. Meanwhile agents and soldiers show up outside the Grandcypher, demanding that the crew hand over Vaseraga.

Beatrix: Ah, there you are! Zeta!
Zeta: Bea...
Beatrix: Sorry to keep you waiting!
Hm? What's wrong? You're looking awfully serious.
Zeta: Bea, I need to ask you something.
Zeta: You said your Embrasque Sword has changed shape before, right?
Beatrix: Hm... You mean, like during Halloween?
Zeta: Bingo! Do you remember if there were any changes to your body as well?
Beatrix: No, not really.
Eustace: Beatrix.
Beatrix: What do you want?
Eustace frowns and points to Beatrix's sword.
Eustace: What is that?
Beatrix: You can tell just by looking at it, can't you? It's my Embrasque Sword.
Eustace: The shape and color are different.
Lyria: That's true. Doesn't it look really different from before?
Vyrn: It even has a weird emblem etched on the grip. What's it for?
Beatrix: Who knows...
Vyrn: Who knows? You don't know your own sword?
Beatrix: By the time I noticed it, the shape had already changed.
Beatrix: I think it was around the time I put on my costume. Heheh. Embrasque must've been excited about the mission.
Vyrn: So if you're in a good mood, then your sword also becomes happy and changes?
Beatrix: Huh? That can't be right! It's not like I'm particularly excited or anything!
Zeta: Are you absolutely sure? Nothing changed in the slightest?
Beatrix: Umm, yeah. Nothing at all.
Beatrix: If we're really digging for details though, I guess you could say I felt more pumped about the mission than usual. Why are you asking anyway?
Zeta: Because...
???: Hey.
Beatrix: Gaah!
Eustace: ...
Beatrix: Ugh, Eustace? Don't scare us like that!
Eustace: So you two were talking about our weapons.
Zeta: Indeed we were.
Eustace: Did something happen?
Zeta: ...
Beatrix: I'm curious too, Zeta. Tell us what happened.
Zeta: Sigh... All right then. I'll start from the beginning.
Beatrix: And Vaseraga hasn't woken up since?
Zeta: Yeah, this is definitely not normal.
Beatrix: Odd. Nothing like this happened to me on Halloween.
Eustace: If you ask me...
Eustace: What happened to Beatrix that time is completely different from what's happening to Vaseraga right now.
Zeta: Hm, you think so? Why do you say that?
Eustace: I can't say for sure.
Beatrix: Ugh, could you be any more vague!
Eustace: ...
Zeta: C'mon, Eustace.
Eustace: Each of our weapons is supposed to operate under a completely different mechanism.
Beatrix: Yeah?
Eustace: ...
Eustace: Time to get moving.
Beatrix: Huh? Where to?
Eustace: To where Vaseraga is.
Zeta: We should go too.
Beatrix: Hey! Wait for me!
Vaseraga: ...
Vyrn: He's not waking up.
Lyria: Yeah...
I wonder if Zeta learned anything new.
Vyrn: I sure hope so.
A raucous clamor can be heard outside the Grandcypher.
Lyria: What's that sound?
Vyrn: Is someone here to visit? Nah, it's too noisy for that. Let's go see what it is.
Soldier 1: We know you're in there!
Agent 1: Come out now!
Soldier 2: Resistance is futile!
Lyria: Wh-what is happening?
Vyrn: Aren't those the guys who were fighting it out in town?
Soldier 2: It's them! They're in cahoots with that freak! We've got 'em now!
Agent 2: Bring out that armored brute right now, you cowards!
A large, violent crowd surrounds the Grandcypher.
Lyria: Armored brute? Are they talking about Vaseraga?
Vyrn: Whoa, let's all calm down for a second. Why's everyone even here to begin with?
Agent 1: Shut your trap! We'll take apart your little airship piece by piece if we have to!
Vyrn: Ack! Stop it!
Zeta: Hey! What's the meaning of this?
Beatrix: Whoa! What the hell's going on here?
Soldier 1: Reinforcements? By jiminy, they've called for backup!
Agent 2: I guess they're not gonna back down without a fight. Let's show them what it means to mess with us!
Zeta: I have no idea what's happening, but we'd better be ready for anything.
Soldier 2: We can't let the threat grow any larger!
Zeta: Hah! So you wanna take us on, eh?
Agent 1: Agh! Looks like these guys are teamed up with that armored brute!
Seemingly influenced by an invisible force, the rowdy soldiers and agents turn a deaf ear to the crew and raise their weapons.
Beatrix: Something seems off about them. Could this be...
Eustace: That's definitely a possibility, but anything's possible right now.
Beatrix: Ugh! Don't tell me we're just gonna stand back here and watch!
Eustace: Whoever said anything about watching?
Eustace: We can start by shutting 'em up.
Beatrix: Hahah! Now we're talking!
Zeta: Take it easy on them, you guys! We're not going up against primal beasts here!
Beatrix: Yeah, whatever!

Kind Yet Tragic: Scene 3

Vaseraga awakes as a battle ensues outside. In order to save the crew, he attempts to offer himself to the attackers. Vyrn and Lyria stop him, but a primal beast summoned by the local baron makes its appearance.

Zeta, Beatrix, and Eustace begin fighting off the hordes of soldiers and agents surrounding the Grandcypher.
Lyria: Wow! They sure are powerful!
Vyrn: Yeah, but the enemy's got the numbers! We should join in!
Lyria: Right. Let's go, (Captain)!
???: Hold it.
Lyria: Ah!
Vaseraga: ...
Lyria: Vaseraga! You're awake!
Vyrn: Glad to see you up, but you should probably keep outta sight!
Vaseraga: ...
Vyrn: Spiky! It's dangerous out there!
Upon his sudden appearance, Vaseraga descends to the battlefield and walks right up to the soldiers.
Soldier 1: At last! The armored brute shows himself!
Agent 1: Kept us waitin' long enough!
Zeta: Vaseraga, what are you thinking? You're the one they're targeting!
Beatrix: I heard you were sleeping like a log... Feeling better now?
Eustace: ...
Vaseraga: You guys...
Zeta: Hey, are you even listening? You try to fight them in that sleepy daze, and that'll spell trouble for all of us!
Vyrn: That's right, Spiky! You should fall back—
Vaseraga: Humph!
Vyrn: Yikes!
Vaseraga swings Grynoth at his allies.
Vyrn: Ack! What was that for, Spiky? You could have hit us!
Vaseraga: Haah!
Vyrn: Gaah!
Lyria: Vaseraga! What's wrong?
Zeta: What the hell!
Agent 1: They're fighting among each other now?
Agent 2: Hah! Brutes will be brutes, I say!
Soldier 1: Our first priority is that big guy in armor.
Soldier 2: We can't let any threats to our town roam free!
Vaseraga: ...
Zeta: Ack! Enough is enough! It's time for—
Vyrn: Aargh!
Lyria: Eeyagh!
Vaseraga: Wha—
Vyrn and Lyria tackle Vaseraga and grab on to him with all their might.
Vaseraga: What are you two doing?
Vyrn: We don't know if you're doing this on purpose or if you're being controlled, but we can't just leave you alone!
Lyria: If you're doing this on purpose, you're doing it to help us, right?
Soldier 1: What's going on? I thought they were fighting.
Vaseraga: Get off of me.
Vyrn: Not happenin'!
Lyria: No!
Vaseraga: They're here for me. You guys will be okay if you fly off in the Grandcypher.
Vyrn: I said that ain't happenin'!
Vaseraga: ...
Beatrix: Hm... You think they'll be okay if we stay out of it?
Zeta: Let's keep watch for now.
Vaseraga: Don't worry about me. I'll be fine. Like I said, my body's augmented.
Vaseraga: Their attacks wouldn't even put a scratch on me.
Lyria: That's not the point!
Lyria clings to Vaseraga's arm even harder.
Lyria: I know your body won't feel any pain. What I'm worried about is your heart.
Lyria: You haven't done anything wrong, and you're one of the kindest people I know. Yet everyone here treats you like some kind of monster.
Lyria: There's no way you don't feel anything. There's no way you're not hurting... Because even I feel the pain!
Vyrn: Lyria...
Vaseraga: Getting upset over something would only make me repeat my mistakes.
Vaseraga: I can't bear to see my friends get hurt at my expense.
Zeta: Agh! Enough chitchat already! We don't have time for this!
Zeta: Point is Lyria's upset and it's your fault! Now own up to it already!
Lyria: Zeta, I... Umm...
Vaseraga: You're right.
Agent 1: What are they gabbin' on about?
Soldier 1: Hand over the armored brute now, and we will spare the rest of you!
Beatrix: Ugh! They don't know when to give up, do they?
Zeta: Let's just break through and get out of here already!
Vaseraga: They're just ordinary people. Go easy on them.
Zeta: Like you need to tell us!
Agent 2: Crud, here they come!
Soldier 2: Stand your ground! It's only a matter of time before the baron finishes his preparations!
Agent 1: Right, of course! We'll just have to hold until then.
???: Ohh! It's Mr. Spiky!
Vyrn: Hm? What's going on?
Child: Mr. Spiky!
Mother: Stop that! It's dangerous!
Vyrn: Isn't that the kid who was crying in town?
Lyria: Yes. And that must be his mother.
Agent 1: Someone shut that brat up.
Soldier 1: You will not! He's a commoner from the town!
Zeta: Mr. Spiky, he said? Is that supposed to be you?
Vaseraga: ...
Child: I-I just wanted to thank Mr. Spiky!
Child: So I came out here, and um, well...
Vaseraga: You were crying the other day. Was it not because you feared me?
Child: No way! I was just surprised...
Child: You protected me and the blue-haired lady! I knew I had to say thank you!
Vaseraga: I see...
Lyria: Teehee! Vaseraga is so strong and kind!
Child: Yeah! Mr. Spiky's the best!
Mother: Um, Vaseraga?
Zeta: Let's move. This is not the place to be getting sentimental.
Lyria: Ahh, right! Um...
Soldier 3: I come with a decree from the baron: preparations are complete!
Agent 1: It's about time!
Soldier 1: Fall back, everyone! We don't want to get caught in what's coming!
Zeta: They're retreating?
Beatrix: Have they given up already?
Eustace: Keep your eyes peeled.
Vaseraga: Something's coming.
???: Rgh!
Lyria: Ah! This is...
Vyrn: Lyria, could this be—
Lyria: It's definitely a primal beast!
Vaseraga: Now it's my turn to jump into the fray.
Zeta: You're kidding, right? You were just bedridden minutes ago.
Vaseraga: Ironic, I know. But I'm feeling pumped.
Beatrix: Hey, I'm taking credit for this one!
Eustace: Eyes up front, guys.
Lyria: Here it comes!
Vaseraga: Vyrn. Care to hide in my bag?
Vyrn: I said no already!
Vaseraga: Very well then.
Vaseraga: Great Scythe Grynoth! Drink in the blood of the primal beast and let your soul shape my blade!

Kind Yet Tragic: Scene 4

After defeating the primal beast, the young child from before and his mother call out to Vaseraga. It turns out Vaseraga has been regularly sending supplies to them—the wife and son of his deceased subordinate. The entire incident gives Vaseraga a new outlook on life.

The combined might of (Captain) and crew leads to a spectacular victory over the primal beast.
Vaseraga: Staying any longer would only cause further mayhem. We should depart at once.
Lyria: That's true. With the soldiers gone, now's our chance—
Mother: Wait, please!
Vyrn: Huh? You're still here with your son? It's not safe here!
Mother: Umm, Vaseraga... Are you Captain Vaseraga by any chance?
Vaseraga: ...
Vyrn: Captain? Wouldn't that be (Captain)?
Lyria: She seems to be talking to Vaseraga though.
Vyrn: That reminds me: Spiky was the captain of a crew way back when!
Vaseraga: I...
Mother: So we finally meet, Captain.
Vaseraga: ...
Zeta: Someone tell me what's happening here.
Mother: We've been receiving supplies from the Knickknack Shack all this time... I always hoped to meet you in person one day.
Mother: When my husband died, my son was still a newborn... I can't even begin to tell you how much your shipments of food and rupies have helped us.
Mother: Thank you so much. We are forever in your debt.
Beatrix: Rupies? Food? Vaseraga's been sending them provisions?
Zeta: Sure sounds like it.
Vaseraga: I am undeserving of your gratitude. After all... it is entirely my fault that he died.
Vaseraga: In fact you should regard me with disdain. I do not expect to atone for my actions with mere provisions.
Mother: No...
Mother: It's true that my husband's death was excruciatingly painful. I even despised you at one point.
Mother: But a life filled with such hate and anger is ultimately meaningless. So I decided to change my outlook.
Vaseraga: I see...
Mother: Captain... No, Vaseraga. You've done more than enough for us.
Mother: I would ask that you live for yourself, and for your newfound friends, from now on.
Vaseraga: ...
Child: Hey, Mr. Spiky.
As Vaseraga turns quiet, the child tugs on his hand.
Child: When I grow up, I'm gonna be a skyfarer!
Child: I'll be a big strong skyfarer, just like you and Daddy!
Vaseraga: Very well.
Vaseraga plants one of his massive hands on the child's head and gently pats it.
Zeta: So the Foe was involved with the incident in that town after all?
Vaseraga: I can't say for certain, but it's very likely.
Zeta: They even brought out a primal beast. Those jerks are getting bolder with every move.
Vaseraga: Looks like they're finally getting their act together.
Zeta: Heh, that's for sure.
Zeta: So... you're okay now?
Vaseraga: Yes. I apologize for making you worry.
Zeta: Me? Worried about you? Never!
Vaseraga: Yeah?
Zeta: Yeah is right!
Anyway, what was the whole deal with you collapsing?
Vaseraga: I imagine this weapon caused it all.
Zeta: Great Scythe Grynoth...
Vaseraga: I'm sure you know that Grynoth increases in strength each time I fight a primal beast.
Vaseraga: But I forced it to draw out its strength against a normal opponent this time. And my body took the brunt of the kickback.
Zeta: Kickback? I thought you didn't feel pain with that body of yours.
Vaseraga: Indeed. But it was just too much to take in this time.
Zeta: Seriously? How are you still using that weapon then?
Vaseraga: It's no longer a problem. My body is now acclimated to the power.
Zeta: It was enough to break you, of all people. Yet here you are saying you can handle it now...
Vaseraga: Sure, I was bedridden for a few days. But it would've been much worse for anyone else.
Zeta: I just don't get you sometimes...
Zeta looks down grimly at her Arvess Spear.
Vaseraga: You be careful too.
Zeta: Eustace mentioned that each of our weapons operates under a different mechanism.
Vaseraga: That's definitely very likely. But still...
Zeta: I know. I'll be careful.
Vaseraga: ...
Having parted ways with Zeta, a lone Vaseraga takes a sip from a glass of spirits.
Vaseraga: (Great Scythe Grynoth... Your power is now equal to that of a primal beast. In other words...)
Vaseraga: (Depending on how I use you, I myself will become the threat.)
Vaseraga: (But I swear to never again lose myself to such overwhelming power.)
Vaseraga: I've decided to live my life for them, and I need to stay true to that decision.
Vaseraga mutters under his breath as he finishes off the glass of spirits.
