Critical hits refer to the chance to deal more damage. Unlike how it is commonly defined in other RPGs, critical hits can only occur when a foe is hit with an element they are weak to. However, critical hits can always be dealt against non-elemental foes regardless of the elemental damage dealt. Some effects can also bypass the requirement temporarily.
With the notable exception of weapon skills, which can add up to 100%, most critical hit rate sources will roll separately to apply their individual critical damage boost.
On the other hand, all sources of critical damage are additive. When multiple sources of critical hit proc, the boosts in damage are additive. For example, if both Silva's TacticianGain
50% / 50% Critical Hit Rate UpAttacks made with elemental superiority have a chance to deal boosted DMG
Strength: 50% chance of dealing 50% more damage.Duration: 3 turns.
At level 75:
Buff increased to 75% / 75% Critical Hit Rate UpAttacks made with elemental superiority have a chance to deal boosted DMG

Strength: 30% chance of dealing 30% more damage. proc at the same time, Silva's damage will be boosted by 75% + 30% = 105%.[1]
Critical damage is still affected by the damage cap, although high-powered crits can push particularly strong attacks a fair amount past the soft cap.

Sources of Crit
Critical hit can be granted by buffs, support skills, Extended Mastery Perks, and weapon skills. Both critical damage and crit chance can vary between sources.
By default, characters do not have an innate base critical hit rate, unless it is provided by a support skill or Extended Mastery Perks.
Character Extended Mastery Perks
Critical Hit EMPs are one of the most common ways to obtain crit for characters that possess them. When maxed out, each Crit node gives a 25% chance of adding +25% Critical damage from EMPs. Each individual node will roll separately. For example, a character with 2 maxed nodes can receive a 0%, 25%, or 50% damage boost, depending on the number of node that procced on that turn.
A character gets a guaranteed Critical Hit EMP if they are Human, Draph, or Attack style and can have additional Crit EMP as individual perks.
The MC also has some Critical Hit EMP nodes, which stack directly for a very weak effect (currently maxing out at a 15% chance to deal +15% damage from 3 nodes).
Weapon Skills
The weapon skills Verity, Restraint, and Celere provide boosts to critical hit. Crits from these sources add +50% damage. Multiple hit rate boosts are additive with each other, up to a maximum of 100%.
e.g. Having Ancient Ecke Sachs ×2 in your weapon grid with a
Colossus Omega at 3★ as main summon will give you
6.5% + 6.5% = 13% * 100% boost = 26%
chance to deal an extra 50% damage, and adding a Ecke Sachs ×1 to the grid will give you an extra 6.5% chance to deal 50% damage (32.5% chance to deal an extra 50% damage).

Critical Hit Buff
Critical Hit Rate UpAttacks made with elemental superiority have a chance to deal boosted DMG
buffs come in a generic version that applies to every character, and one for each Element, that apply only to their particular characters. Usually, only one buff of a given version can be applied at the same time.
For example, a Fire character could have a Critical Hit Rate UpAttacks made with elemental superiority have a chance to deal boosted DMG
and a Critical Hit Rate UpAttacks made with elemental superiority have a chance to deal boosted DMG
at the same time, but not two Critical Hit Rate UpAttacks made with elemental superiority have a chance to deal boosted DMG

There's also a number of unique buffs that can give Critical Hit buffs, such as Anila's
