When the player first meets him, he had recently returned to Feendrache after being assigned abroad. Despite Lancelot becoming Captain of the newly reorganised Order of the White Dragons, Vane had remained a common knight, subject to being sent anywhere higher powers may please. This separation in rank causes Vane to believe that he has to catch up, having always idolised Lancelot since they were neighbours, growing up together in the same village. His insecurities however results in him diminishing his own accomplishments, and he hasn't considered that Lancelot had also looked up to him as a source of strength. Vane used to be smaller than Lancelot, and a crybaby when he was younger, but despite his fears, he had continued to strive towards his goal, and this tendency to always push himself despite his circumstances inspires his own idol, Lancelot.
Vane is bright and friendly, willing to go the extra mile to help both friends and strangers alike. He insists on being the player's tour guide in Defender's Oath, despite his troubling sense of direction, unwilling to let people he had just met wander Feendrache alone. The events of Welcome to Bistro Feendrache occur precisely because he had pledged himself to help an old classmate, despite not having seen him in some time. He's popular with the elderly, a self proclaimed grandma's boy because they had looked after him as a child. His tendency for helping out also extends to being proficient at household chores, frequently tidying Lancelot's messy room, and being an excellent cook. Vane follows his heart, believing in the need to protect others simply because he feels that is what is right.
However, underlying all his hard work, Vane struggles with insecurity, troubled with thoughts of inadequacy. Following his separation from Lancelot, Vane languishes in a lack of self confidence, unsure of his own strength, causing him to chase after Lancelot to consolidate his own position. He is acutely aware that he needed to struggle to get to where he is now as Vice Captain, but it is precisely this tendency to never give up that inspires others, including his own idol Lancelot. Despite standing as Lancelot's equal in all the things he does, the ever kind and courageous Vane has yet to truly acknowledge his own accomplishments, and thus, has yet to truly believe in himself.

Once Upon a Spring Day
Vane visits Lancelot and the view outside the window inspires them to go on a hike. They decide to hike the mountain they once attempted to climb but couldn't finish. (Captain) and the crew join them on the hike and they all have a picnic on the peak.
On a fine spring afternoon, with tea and assorted confectionary treats in hand, Vane knocks on a door.
Vane: Lancey, it's me! Can I come in?
Lancelot: Hm? Vane? Oh, by all means!
The office door opens and in comes Vane.
Vane: Comin' in!
Vane: Lancey, you've been cooped up in here all morning, haven't you? How about a break?
Lancelot: Mmm... Good advice. I was just thinking of taking a breather.
Lancelot: Heh. Your timing couldn't be more perfect.
Vane: But of course! I've known you your whole life, Lancey—I'm practically a pro at reading you.
Lancelot: Haha. Can't argue with you there. So what've you brought?
Vane: Today's menu is... Ta-daa!
Freshly baked apple pie and freshly brewed tea!
Lancelot: Wow! That looks amazing! I've been craving something sweet lately. This is perfect.
Vane: Heh! Glad to hear that! C'mon, let's dig in while it's hot!
Lancelot: Hmm, let's set the plates over here!
The two enjoy each other's company as they savor their apple pie and tea.
Vane: Man, just look out that window. Perfect day out today—not one cloud in the sky.
Lancelot: It almost feels like a waste staying indoors with such perfect weather.
As they stare out through the windows at rolling mountains, Vane blurts out something unexpected.
Vane: Y'know, this would be a perfect time to take a hike up in the mountains.
Lancelot: Mountain hiking... That does sound nice!
Now that you mention it, didn't we take a group hike with our order a while back?
Vane: Oh yeah, we did! Mount Kirchberg, right?
Lancelot: Ahh, good times. But we weren't able to reach the peak, were we?
Vane: Yeah. The weather took a turn for the worse and we were forced to turn back.
Lancelot: A real shame, that was. We were almost at the top too.
Lancelot lets out a wry chuckle, but is surprised to find Vane wearing a most serious expression.
Vane: Hey... Lancey?
Lancelot: Hm? What is it, Vane?
Vane: What do you say we try going up that mountain one more time?
Lancelot: Huh? Us? Hm...
Lancelot: Yes, I think I like the sound of that!
Lancelot: Now's the time to finish what we started! There's no fun in leaving things half done!
Vane: All right! Then let's get ready! Double-time!
Just then (Captain) and company pop in to visit the two knights.
Vyrn: What's up, guys! We came to check in on you!
Lyria: Good afternoon! You two seem to be having fun! What're you talking about?
Vane: Oh! Well, if it isn't Lyria, Vyrn, and the gang! Actually, we were just...
Vane's eyes shine with a certain sparkle as he tells (Captain) and company of his mountain-climbing plans.
Vane: Say, why don't you guys join us? You came all the way out here, after all.
Choose: Let's go!
- Let's go!
- Won't we be, uh... intruding?
Vane: I was hoping you'd say that, (Captain)!
Vane: Lancey, you're okay if (Captain) and the guys tag along, right?
Lancelot: Of course! It's not too dangerous a mountain; I've no doubt (Captain) should be able to handle it!Choose: Won't we be, uh... intruding?
Vane: Hm? Intruding? Why would you say that?
Vane: Oh, unless... hiking's not really your thing?
Vyrn: No, it's not that. It's just that, uhh... Lyria?
Lyria: Well, that mountain holds a lot of memories for you two, doesn't it?
Vane: Sure does!
Lyria: I guess we thought you two might want to relive the moments by yourselves.
Vane: Wahahahaha! That's what you're so worried about?
Vane: C'mon, we're all friends here! We'd love to have you around!
Vane: The more the merrier! Right, Lancey?
Lancelot: Indeed! And I know (Captain) and the others shouldn't have a problem in the stamina department!Continue 1
Vane: All right! It's decided! I'll fill you guys in on the details later. Just hang tight!
Thus, (Captain) and company agree to join Vane and Lancelot on their hike.
After several days the group meets at the foot of Mount Kirchberg.
Vane: Ahem. Ladies and gentlemen, are you ready to climb this mountain?
Vyrn: Yes, sir! I got a full night's sleep for today!
Lyria: Me too! I made sure I ate all my breakfast!
Vane: That's the spirit! How about you, (Captain)? All good to go?
(Captain) answers Vane with a smile and a nod.
Vane: All those gathered here today are tied by fate—we're family.
Vane: If you get tired, hurt, or have any problems at all, don't hesitate to ask Lancey or me for help!
Vyrn: Sure will! We're counting on ya!
Lyria: Hehe. Wow, Vane, you sound just like a mountain ranger!
Lancelot: Um, Vane... I've no doubt of your enthusiasm, but I just wanted to make sure you know the way.
Vane: You bet I do! I reviewed the route dozens of times for today!
Lancelot: That's good to hear. Would you mind if I held onto the map though? Just in case.
Vane: Here you go! Man, you're such a worrywart, Lancey!
(Captain) and company breathe a sigh of relief as they see Lancelot grab hold of the map.
Vane: Now! Before we leave, let's do a head count! You start with number one, Vyrn!
Following Lancelot, (Captain) calls out his number with gusto.
Vane: That's the spirit! Now, let's get moving!
The group had been somewhat concerned with Vane's knack for getting lost, but the knight's extensive preparation is soon apparent.
Vane's friends see him in a whole new light as he leads them.
With the peak nearly in reach, Vane makes a stop along the way.
Vane: Lancey, Lancey! This is the place!
Lancelot: I remember! This was where the storm hit us.
Vyrn: And forced you guys to turn back, right?
Lancelot: It was so bad that our squad had to take shelter behind some of the rocks here before we left.
Vane: Ahh, this place brings back memories. I was so hungry that time—my stomach was killing me.
Lyria: Hehe, aren't you always hungry?
Vane: Hey now! That's...
Vane: Actually true!
Vane: Guess I can't complain about that! Wahaha!
Lyria: Hehe! So where are we going to have lunch?
Vane: I'd love to chow down right here and now, but if we push just a little further, we can have lunch at the peak!
Vyrn: All right! Race you there! I'm gonna be first!
Lyria: Vyrn! No fair!
Vane: Hey! No running around or you're gonna hurt yourselves!
Lancelot: Vane, leave those two to me.
Vane: Thanks, Lancey! Keep 'em safe!
Vane: Okay... (Captain). This part's a little tricky. Give me your hand.
Taking hold of Vane's outstretched hand, (Captain)'s body is lifted into the air.
(Captain) thanks Vane for his kindness.
Vane: Wahaha! It's nothing! I'll even piggyback you if you're tired! Just say the word!
Vane: Whoops! We better get moving before we're left behind! C'mon!
The group soon reaches the peak of the mountain without incident.
Vyrn: I did it! First place goes to me!
Lyria: Pant... Pant... No fair, Vyrn. You can fly...
Lancelot: Are you all right, Lyria? Sit down and rest.
Lyria: Th-thank you. I just need to catch my breath.
Not long after the others, Vane and (Captain) arrive.
Lancelot: Vane. We finally made it.
Vane: We did. And I'm glad I made it with you, Lancey.
The two knights bask in their achievement; they've finally finished what they started all so long ago.
Vane: Right! Now that the gang's all here...
Vane: A very special surprise for all of you! Courtesy of mountain ranger Vane!
From his bag Vane takes out a lunch box stuffed full of handmade sandwiches and delicacies.
Vane: Feast your eyes on my specially made Vanewiches! Woke up at the break of dawn just to make 'em!
Vyrn: Awesome! This is gonna be the best picnic ever!
Lyria: Wow! They look absolutely delicious!
Lancelot: Heh. Good going, Vane.
Vane: We couldn't have made it this far without each other! Great job, everyone!
Vane: Now, let's get this picnic started!
The group gets busy setting up their little picnic.
Spreading the picnic blanket and sitting in a circle, they get ready to eat.
Vane: Bon appetit!
Vyrn: Bon appetit!
Lyria: Bon appetit!
Lancelot: Bon appetit!
Vane: Dig in, guys!
They waste no time in tasting their lovingly made treats.
Lyria: Mmm! This is so yummy!
Vyrn: I'll be the judge of that... Mm! She's right! This is out of this world, Vane!
Sounds of delight and expressions of satisfaction fill the scene as they dig into the amazing-looking food.
Lancelot: Haha. Vane, you should open up a shop! These victuals would sell for sure!
Vane: Vane's Vittles and Vanewiches! I like the sound of that!
Vane: Wait, I can't manage a shop and be a first officer at the same time!
Lancelot: Hahaha! Don't take it too seriously, friend. What would we ever do without our favorite first officer?
Vane: Aww. Oh well! I can still make food for everyone even without a shop!
A happy and merry time it is on that mountain peak of Kirchberg.
In the midst of the revelry, a light breeze greets the jolly picnickers.
Something small, light, and pink drifts down from above and lands in Lancelot's hair.
Vane: Huh. A pink flower petal.
Lancelot: Hm? Flower petal? Where?
Vane: Don't move.
With delicate care, Vane plucks the tiny petal from Lancelot's locks.
Vane: It's... beautiful.
Like warm snow on a spring day, the pink petals waft gently down from the trees.
Vane: Wow. I never knew such beautiful flowers bloomed up here.
Lancelot: They must only bloom during this time of the year.
Vane: Lancey... promise me we'll come here again next year.
Lancelot: Haha. An easy promise.
Enthralled at the magical beauty before them, Vane and Lancelot vow to return when springtime comes again.
Just as the blossoms atop that mountain continue to bloom, so does the camaraderie between the two knights ever flourish.
You and Me, No Matter What
After a picnic on the mountaintop, (Captain) and company descend the mountain. They hear shouts for help coming from nearby and rush over to find monsters attacking defenseless hikers.
Vane, Lancelot, (Captain), and company return from their mountaintop picnic.
Lyria: The view from the peak and those pretty pink flowers were amazing! What a wonderful place that was!
Vyrn: Ditto! If I had my way, I would've stayed a little longer.
Vane: Sorry about that! Believe me, I wanted to stay longer myself, but leaving while the weather's on our side is the safest thing to do.
Vane: Going down the mountain's more dangerous than up, and you never know when the weather might change around here.
Lancelot: Vane's right. Leaving early means that we're prepared for any trouble that might come up along the way.
Vane: Don't worry—we'll come again next year! Right, (Captain)?
(Captain) gives a firm nod in answer.
Just then, the group hears shrill screams pierce through the air.
Vane: Whoa! Speaking of trouble!
Lancelot: Hurry! It came from this way!
Vane: Can you come with us, everyone?
Vyrn: Bet on it! We can keep up!
Lyria: We will! Don't worry about us! This path shouldn't be too hard for us to cross.
(Captain) nods eagerly.
Vane: Okay! Stay close!
After pushing their way through the rough path, the group finds two people cornered at the edge of a cliff by vicious monsters.
Frightened Man: Eeek! G-get away!
Frightened Woman: Help! Someone! Anyone!
Lancelot: We're here to help! Ready, Vane?
Vane: Ready, Lancey!
Everyone, cover us!
Vane: Let's roll!
You and Me, No Matter What: Scene 2
The hikers are rescued, but Vane and Lancelot fall into the rushing river below. Vane pulls them both to safety onto a riverbank and they realize that Lancelot's leg is injured. Vane manages to start a small fire, but monsters close in on their camp.
The group manages to drive away the monsters and rescue the man and woman.
Lancelot: Whew. That's the last of them. Nothing more to worry about. You're safe now.
Frightened Woman: Th-thank you!
Vane: We'd never have found you if not for your buddy here! That's quite a set of lungs you have there, guy!
Frightened Man: Ha... haha... I'd prefer if you forgot about that, actually.
When Vane and Lancelot approach them, the ground under the man and woman suddenly gives way.
With lightning reflexes Vane and Lancelot lunge forward to save them.
Vane and Lancelot grab hold of each of the civilians and thrust them to safety, switching places with them.
With no time to react, (Captain) and the others can do nothing but watch as the knights fall to the rapids below.
Vyrn: Vane! Lancelot! No!
Lyria: Wh-what do we do, (Captain)!
Vane and Lancelot fight to stay afloat as they are washed away by the torrent.
Vane: Blbbl... Gasp!
Lancey! You okay?
I am! Somehow!
Vane senses the waterway pushing them towards an unsettling destination.
Vane: I think we're headed for a waterfall!
Lancelot: We need to do something! Fast!
Vane: I've got it! Over here, Lancey!
Lancelot: Vane! I'm coming!
Vane grabs hold of a branch leaning into the river.
Vane: Quick! Grab my hand!
Lancelot: Got you!
Vane: Ngh! Here we go!
With all his might, Vane thrusts Lancelot onto the riverbank.
You did it, Vane!
But the force of the feat causes the branch that had anchored Vane to break.
Vane: Damn! So this is how it ends.
Lancelot: Don't you give up on me, Vane! Grab my hand!
As quickly as the branch breaks, Lancelot reaches out toward Vane and catches his hand just in the nick of time.
With every fiber of every muscle in his being, Lancelot plucks Vane from the deluge in one mighty heave.
Vane watches from the safety of the riverbank as items from his baggage are washed away by the currents.
Vane: Pant... Pant... Owe you one, Lancey...
Lancelot: Pant... Pant... I'm glad you're safe, Vane...
The two spend several moments sprawled on the riverside.
Vane: You think (Captain) and the others made it down okay?
Lancelot: It's (Captain)—I wouldn't expect anything less.
Lancelot: We'd do better to worry about ourselves right now.
Vane: You're right, man.
Lancelot: Vane? Are you all right?
Vane: Wahahaha! It's nothing! I'm fine!
Lancelot: But if we don't do something soon, we might freeze out here. We need a fire to dry ourselves off.
Vane: You're right! We should gather some dry leaves and twigs!
Lancelot: Sounds like a plan. Let's g—Argh!
Vane: Lancey! What's wrong?
Lancelot: Damn. My leg's injured.
Vane: Then I'll go by myself. You just rest here.
Lancelot: I'm sorry I can't help, Vane.
Vane: Heh! Come on, Lancey, what are friends for?
Lancelot: Indeed. Thank you, friend.
Vane: All right. You just wait right there. Daddy Vane's gonna bring home the bacon.
Lancelot: Haha! Be careful out there.
Vane manages to gather a large pile of dried leaves, grass, and branches. They waste no time starting a warm fire.
Vane: How is it? Warm enough?
Lancelot: Ahh, it's perfect.
Vane: Whew. Guess we can breathe easy for now!
Lancelot: Wait... I hear monsters nearby.
Vane: Damn it! There's nowhere for us to hide! I'll have to take them on alone. Stay here!
Lancelot: That's madness! It's too dangerous by yourself!
Vane: B-but you're—
Lancelot: I'm fine! Don't worry about me—I know my limits.
Lancelot: Here they come, Vane!
Vane: Then here we go, Lancey!
You and Me, No Matter What: Scene 3
Just as Vane and Lancelot defeat the monsters, the sky begins to thunder. They find a cave for shelter from the rain and start a fire. They talk about their friendship and their trust in each other during tough scrapes. But soon enough a monster appears from within the cave.
Vane: Pant... Pant... I think we got them.
Lancelot: This area must be monster territory.
As soon as the two knights defeat the monsters, the clouds above darken and thunder starts to roar. A storm threatens.
Vane: Oh, come on! Can't two guys catch a break?
Lancelot: Vane! We need to find shelter before the rain finds us!
Vane: Ditto! Lean on me—I'll be your crutch.
Lancelot: Much obliged. Let's follow the river for now.
Lancelot limps along with Vane's help.
Before long they come across a cave large enough to accommodate them.
Vane: Whew! We made it! And not a drop of rain on us!
Lancelot: Not a moment too soon either.
Vane: It might be a little dark and damp in here, but it looks like we're finally safe.
Lancelot: The sun's setting as well. It might be best to spend the night here.
Vane: You're right! Wouldn't want to wander down the mountain when it's pitch black out there.
Lancelot: Perhaps we should use the rest of the kindling to make a fire while there's still light.
Vane: Right! I'm on it!
Vane: Hm? What's so funny?
Lancelot: Oh, nothing. I was just thinking about how dependable you've been today.
Vane: Really? Aren't I always like this?
Vane: Wait. Does that mean I'm usually not dependable?
Lancelot: No, no! That's not what I meant at all!
Vane: I guess...
I just really wanted this hike to go well, y'know?
Lancelot: Mm. As did I.
Vane: I'm... sorry things turned out like this.
Lancelot: Why're you apologizing? This isn't anyone's fault.
Vane: Well, you have a point. But, I dunno, I can't help but feel responsible somehow.
Oh! I got a flame!
Lancelot: Great going, Vane!
Vane: This baby's going to be a roaring fire in no time! Sit tight!
Vane: Huff! Huff!
Vane: Yes! Just in time before dark!
Vane: Argh! I just realized I'm starving!
Lancelot: Pff! Haha! Here, have this.
Vane: Huh? You brought emergency rations?
Vane: You're the man, Lancey! Thanks!
Vane: W-wait, wait, wait. Do you have one for yourself?
Lancelot: Don't worry about me. I'm not too hungry right now.
Vane: No, you gotta eat! We'll split it!
Vane tears the dried snack in two.
Vane: Here! Take it!
Lancelot: Heh. Thank you, Vane.
Vane: Haha. Hey, I should be thanking you here.
Lancelot: Vane... Do you remember?
Vane: Hm? Remember what?
Lancelot: That time when we were kids and went to play in the woods. We got ourselves so lost.
Vane: Huh? Oh, that! Yeah, I was so scared.
Vane: I was crying my eyes out like there was no tomorrow. Man, I was such a baby.
Vane: But you didn't cry. Not even once. You looked after me the whole way through.
Vane: I don't know what I would've done without you.
Lancelot: No, Vane. You've got it all wrong. The only reason I didn't cry was because I had you with me.
Lancelot: It's not that I was strong because I wasn't scared. There was simply nothing to fear as long as we were together.
Lancelot: Vane. It's I who would've been helpless without you.
The two stare at each other. Lancelot is the first to break the silence.
Lancelot: Hahaha. And if I recall, you were hungry that time as well. I split my food with you then, just like now.
Vane: What, seriously? Looks like I haven't changed one bit!
Lancelot: Hahaha, you certainly haven't.
Lancelot: Even back then you insisted we split the food. You wouldn't budge until we did.
Vane: One day I want to be strong enough to protect you, Lancey!
Sounds of movement start to echo from deep within the cave.
Lance! Something's coming!
Lancelot: Yes, it seems we're not alone in here. I'll take care of—
Vane: Leave this to me!
Lancelot: Vane! You can't do this alone!
Vane: I can't let you fight in the condition you're in!
Lancelot: Wha! No, but I can still—
Vane: You think I can't tell, but I can. You've been hiding how bad your leg hurts. You can barely walk, but you've been putting on a brave face for me.
Lancelot: Ngh! That's—
Vane: Lancelot! I'm not that kid in the woods anymore.
Lancelot: But... Vane...
Vane: This time... it's my turn to protect you!
Vane: Sorry we woke you up, little guy, but I'm gonna have to tuck you back into bed!
You and Me, No Matter What: Scene 4
The weather finally clears, allowing Vane and Lancelot to leave the cave. Not long after venturing out, they hear (Captain) and the crew calling out in search of them. Vane and Lancelot realize their bond is even stronger after overcoming this hardship.
Vane deals with the monster that had awoken in the cave.
However, day after day, the weather permits them no passage to the outside world.
Vane: Lancey... Have some water.
Lancelot: Glug, glug...
Thank you, Vane.
Vane: How's the leg?
Lancelot: I'm managing...
Vane: Argh... The monster in my tummy's growling again.
Lancelot: Vane. This is the last of our food. You take it.
Vane: Huh? What's gotten into you? No, we're splitting it like we always do!
Lancelot: Wait! Think about this. With my leg, I'm in no state to go down the mountain.
Lancelot: When the weather clears, you need to go without me. So take this—
Vane: I said no!
Lancelot: Listen to me! We're both going to die out here at this rate!
Vane: I'd rather die with you than survive alone!
Lancelot: Wha! Have you gone insane?
Vane: Besides! I'm bigger and burlier than you. It's gonna be a long time before I starve!
Lancelot: Sigh... Sometimes you amaze me, Vane. I didn't think you could be this stubborn.
Vane: There are some things I can't do, Lancey. Even if you're the one asking me to do it.
Vane: Don't worry! I haven't given up yet! Rescue's coming—I know it!
Lancelot: Heh. Very well. I'll believe in you, Vane.
Vane: That's my boy. Well, no use wasting energy staying awake. Let's turn in for the night.
Lancelot: All right. Here's hoping to a clear sky on the morrow.
Vane: Good night, Lancey.
Lancelot: Good night, Vane.
The screaming winds and pouring rain rage beyond the cave as the two weary knights rest.
The following day, however, is the blue sky they had so hoped for. For the first time in days, they leave the cave.
Vane: Lancey. Can you stand?
Lancelot: Yes. I should be able to handle this much.
Lancelot: I'm all right, Vane.
Vane: No, you're not! Here, hop on my back.
Lancelot: Don't be absurd! You can barely stand on your own!
Vane: Just get on!
Lancelot: Ah! Hey!
Ignoring Lancelot's protests, Vane scoops him onto his back. Step by heavy step, he trudges along the mountain trail.
Vane: First... we go up the ridge... and find a path we recognize.
Vane: Whew... Exercise on an empty stomach... sure is something...
Lancelot: Vane. Don't do this. I can walk.
Vane: No... I'm stronger this way... I'm... never... giving up!
Vane: Whatever happens... as long as we have each other... no matter what... we're gonna make it...
Vane: The both of us... are getting home... alive! Graaagh!
It is then that they hear voices echoing in the distance.
Vyrn: Vane! Lancelot! Are you out there?
Lyria: Vane! Lancelot! Answer if you can you hear us!
Vane: Lancey! D-did you hear that?
Lancelot: I did! Vane, they're really here!
Vane: Vyrn! Lyria!
Vane: We're over here!
Lancelot: We're saved! And all the knights from the order are here too!
(Captain) and company rush toward Vane and Lancelot.
Vane! Lancelot! You're safe now! You made it!
Vane: Heh. Thanks, bud.
Lyria: Sniffle... Sniffle... Thank heavens you're safe... We were so worried...
Lancelot: Thank you, Lyria. We always knew (Captain) and the rest of you would be looking for us.
(Captain) checks to see that the two knights are safe and breathes a sigh of relief.
Lancelot: I see you've called the other knights to help in the search, (Captain). Thank you, we are in your debt.
Vane: We would've been goners if you hadn't.
Vane: Thanks, (Captain)
With tears welling, (Captain) gives a soft smile.
The knights of the Order of the White Dragons gather around in concern.
Vane: Thanks, guys, I really can't thank all of you enough.
Lancelot: Haha. As long as we have each other, we'll always make it, right?
Vane: Yep. No truer words! You and me, no matter what!
Vane and Lancelot are saved from their ordeal and live to tell their harrowing tale.
The bonds between them stronger than ever before, they know that no matter what may come to pass, united they shall abide.
Vane overhears two Order of the White Dragons knights gossiping about how he only became vice-captain because of his connections. (Captain) and company drop by his room unannounced soon after, and noticing Vane's gloom, get him to open up about what happened. (Captain) suddenly gets an idea and runs off to put it in motion.
Vane is in charge of Feendrache Castle while Lancelot is away on a prior engagement.
Vane: I've gotta get some work done before Lancey gets back.
Vane catches sight of a hallway in need of cleaning and comes to a stop.
Vane: Who was supposed to be on mop crew for this area? Eh, since I'm already here, I'll clean it myself!
Vane: There's gotta be cleaning supplies around here...
Vane rummages through a nearby storage room, pulls out a mop, and attacks the floor.
Vane: Dum-dee-doo... Scrub-a-dub, nice and clean... Rub-a-dub, get that sheen...
As Vane goes to town on stubborn stains, he hears some voices coming from around a corner further down the hallway.
White Dragon 1: Hey, did you know Vice-Captain Vane has been friends with Captain Lancelot since they were kids?
White Dragon 2: Yeah, I heard about that! Rumor has it that's why Vane got promoted.
White Dragon 1: Wait. Wasn't it for his service during a crisis that hit the kingdom? That's gotta count for something.
White Dragon 2: Sure, sure, but even that incident had some wild rumors swirling around him too.
White Dragon 2: Stuff like how he was only there because of Captain Siegfried and Vice-Captain Percival during the heyday of the Black Dragons.
White Dragon 1: Oh, speaking of being at the right place at the right time, seems like Vane might be riding the coattails of this really amazing crew too—
Vane: Cough! Cough! Hack!
White Dragons: Urk!
The knights bristle at a voice that belongs to neither of them, and they cautiously peek around the corner.
Vane: Boy, I must be coming down with a cold! Oh, hey guys. What are you up to?
White Dragon 1: Er, nothing really...
White Dragon 2: Um, may I ask what you're doing, Vice-Captain Vane?
Vane: What, don't you see this mop in my hands? I'm defending the castle from evil grime!
Vane: I was so focused on my battle that I tuned out the world around me!
Vane: What an experience it was! I really mopped the floor with... well, this mop! Wahahaha!
White Dragon 1: Vice-Captain...
White Dragon 2: We, um...
Vane: You know what? I think I might be hearing the whispers of a fever.
Vane: I hate to do this, but could I ask you two to take over for me while I go get some medicine?
White Dragon 1: Take over?
White Dragon 2: O-of course, sir!
Vane: Thanks! My work here is done!
Vane: Seriously, you guys are really helping me out!
Vane: Ack! Now my joints hurt too? You've gotta be kidding me! This is totally a cold!
The vice-captain takes his leave, his melodramatics echoing down the hall.
White Dragon 1: Do you think he heard us?
White Dragon 2: Considering that hokey act he put on? Yeah, he definitely heard us...
Vane returns to his room and plops into a chair.
His eyes sweep across the room afforded to a vice-captain, and he lets out another deep sigh.
Vane: (I was so happy to be vice-captain and the responsibilities that came with it. I promised to use that as motivation to give 110%.)
Vane: (But when I think about it, I've never actually accomplished anything big on my own. I'm always just going along with whatever happens.)
Vane: (I thought I'd made some progress since my younger years, but...)
Vane: (Maybe I'm not cut out to be a vice-captain...)
Vane: (My reputation is one thing, but if I'm dragging down Lancelot's too, then someone else ought to take over—)
A knock at the door snaps Vane out of his troubled thoughts.
Vane: Wh-who is it?
Lyria's Voice: Hi, Vane! It's Lyria!
Lyria's Voice: We happened to be in the area, so we stopped by to see you!
Vyrn's Voice: What she said! Sorry for showing up without warning! Can we come in?
Vane: Whoa, you definitely caught me by surprise!
Vane: Come in, come in! Make yourselves at home!
Vane has tea and snacks laid out by the time (Captain) and company get comfortable.
Lyria: Mmm... This tea tastes as sweet as it smells!
Vane: Ah, you noticed. It's my own original blend made from flowers and fruit.
Lyria: You're such an inventor, Vane! You could open your own tea shop!
Vane: Haha. 'Preciate it.
Vyrn: Mm-mm-mm! This pastry is to die for!
Vane: Yeah... I've been thinking about studying other people's creations as a reference for my own recipes.
Vane: These pastries came from a famous bakery that I figured would be a good start.
Vyrn: You don't say! It's too bad you only treat it as a hobby. Almost feels like a waste of talent!
Vyrn: I volunteer to be your official taste tester once you perfect your recipe!
Lyria: Ooh! Don't forget about me! I want to eat them too!
Vane: Haha. I wouldn't dream of leaving you out.
(Captain) notices something strange about Vane's behavior and asks if something is bothering him.
Vane: Er... No... Nope! Nothing at all!
Lyria: Hm, actually... You don't seem as cheerful as you usually are, Vane.
Vane: A-are you sure? Because I'm feeling super cheerful!
Vyrn: I think Lyria's right. You're not talking as loudly or laughing as much, in my opinion...
Vane: Er... Gee, I wonder why you think so? Hahahaha!
The guests are unnerved by Vane's erratic behavior. They keep him talking, trying to get to the bottom of it.
Vane: Aha-hah... I guess I can't be a good host if I keep worrying you guys.
Vane: Truth is something happened just before you all came by.
Vane recounts the gossip he overheard from his fellow knights.
(Captain), Lyria, and Vyrn take turns voicing their disbelief.
Lyria: I really think those knights haven't gotten to know you well enough yet.
Lyria: I'm sure the more you train together with them, the more they'll understand what a dependable vice-captain you are!
Vane: Thanks, Lyria.
Vane: But that doesn't change the fact that I'm nowhere near as awesome as Siegfried, Percival, or any of you.
Vyrn: That's not true! There's no way we can cook as good as you!
(Captain) ticks off examples of the times Vane saved them from dire situations.
Vane: Thanks for the kind words, Vyrn! (Captain)!
Vane: Sniff... Sorry for being such a downer when you all just wanted to hang out.
Vane's voice quivers as he thanks his friends for their warm, encouraging words.
They silently wonder if there's anything they can do to help boost Vane's confidence.
Then (Captain) suddenly leaps out the chair, tells everyone to meet at a certain spot, and dashes out of the room.
Ordinary Heroics: Scene 2
(Captain) fetches Siegfried and Percival to help pull Vane out of his funk. Percival asserts that Vane must confront the reason for his lack of confidence; he offers to test Vane's strength to determine whether his capacity as vice-captain is truly lacking.
Vane: This is the spot (Captain) told us to wait at, but...
Vyrn: What's that captain of ours thinking?
Lyria: (Captain)'s late... I wonder what this is about?
Their questions are interrupted by voices coming from behind them.
Siegfried: How are you faring, Vane?
Vane: S-Siegfried! What are you doing here?
Percival: Hmph. (Captain) more or less roped us into coming out here.
Vane: P-Percy? Why would you need to come too?
Percival: Does it look like I know? Siegfried and I are the ones who deserve some answers.
Everyone seems unsure of why they've gathered except for a smiling (Captain).
(Captain) tells Siegfried and Percival about Vane's depression and wants them to raise his spirits.
Siegfried: Ah, so that's the situation.
Vyrn: Good thinking, (Captain). These two vets should definitely have wisdom to share!
Lyria: I feel much better now that we have two people who know Vane very well!
Percival: You should have made yourself clearer, (Captain).
(Captain) apologizes to Percival, saying it was a spur-of-the-moment thing.
Vane: I'm touched you both are taking the time to help me.
Siegfried: Think nothing of it, Vane.
Percival: Hmph. Foolish. Let the rabble prattle behind your back if they are so inclined.
Percival: But you do know what the reason for your anxiety is, don't you?
Percival: If so, then the only course of action is to face the source of the issue.
Vane: What are you suggesting?
Percival: Listen well. Burning your limited brain cells on trivial worries is a pointless endeavor, even for a mongrel such as yourself.
Vane: Yeah, yeah, yeah... I won't find the answers to my problems by just thinking and not acting...
Vane: Hey, hold on! Those were some cheap shots you got in on me! Couldn't you have said it in a nicer way?
Percival: Hehehe... But I know you have quite the bark.
Percival: Now let us move on to the main event—the reason for my presence here.
Percival: Shall I test your strength?
Vane: Hehe, so this is what you were leading up to.
Percival: Will this all be over in a second?
Percival: Or will you actually give me a tiny challenge?
Percival: Show me what you're made of.
Vane: If it's an all-out rumble you want, then an all-out rumble you'll get!
Without another word Vane charges at the Lord of Flames.
Ordinary Heroics: Scene 3
After crossing swords with Percival and Siegfried, the two veteran knights commend Vane for his growth. In the past, Vane inspired Siegfried by calling him a hero—now Siegfried wishes to return the favor, stating that the smile Vane gives everyone makes him the true hero. This statement moves Vane to near tears.
Percival: Hmph... Better than I expected.
Vane: Heh! I've still got energy to spare!
The two combatants recognize each other's skills while (Captain) and company watch on.
Percival: The old Vane would not have stood a chance against me.
Percival: But as you are now, I dare say you make a decent vice-captain of the White Dragons.
Vane: Huh? Was... was that an actual compliment? Did you just say something nice about me?
Percival: Hmph. I won't say it twice.
Vane: Oh, wow... Percival just praised me!
Percival's praise hits Vane especially hard.
Vane: Gosh... Sniff... Thanks so much, Percy!
Percival: Enough. Don't get ahead of yourself, mongrel.
Vane: Urk! Y-yes, sir!
Lyria: Heehee. The Vane-Percival dynamic never changes.
Vyrn: Hehe, looks like Vane's back to his ol' happy self again!
(Captain) is relieved to see Vane's beaming face.
But there's another challenger waiting for his turn.
Siegfried: May I interject?
Siegfried: Do you remember the day we had a sparring session right after you became the vice-captain?
Vane: How could I forget? The lesson you taught me that day helped me to be the vice-captain I am today!
Vane: I trained my butt off and learned how to handle all kinds of weapons!
Siegfried: Hm. I see. Very good.
Siegfried: Then would you be so kind as to show me and my sword the fruits of your labor?
Vane: Yes, sir!
Siegfried: You may come at me at will.
Vane: I'll take you up on that and make the most of this opportunity!
Vane once received secret training from Siegfried.
He swings at Siegfried with everything he has as if to prove how much progress he's made since that day.
Siegfried doesn't hold back either, recognizing Vane's development.
Vane: Huff... Puff... So what do you think, Siegfried?
Siegfried: Phew... You've gotten stronger.
Vane: Have I? Really?
Siegfried: Yes, you've come a long way since those early days.
Vane: Man, and that's coming from Siegfried... This is, like, the happiest day of my life!
Siegfried watches Vane dance around for a bit before speaking in his usual serious tone.
Siegfried: I seem to recall you calling me a hero at one point in the past. Do you remember that?
Siegfried: Do you know how much your words helped me back then?
Siegfried: Sadly I wasn't able to find the opportunity to tell you that at the time.
Siegfried: So allow me to express my gratitude right now. Thank you, Vane.
Vane: It... It was nothing really. I was just speaking my mind.
Vane: I don't think it was anything that deep...
Siegfried: Vane. You haven't realized it yet, but...
Siegfried: The genuine smile you give everyone around you makes you a true hero.
Vane: I... Thank you, Siegfried...
Vane is so overcome with emotion that his voice barely comes out.
Lyria: I'm so glad Vane is feeling like himself again.
Vyrn: Yep. I was worried for a bit back there, but everything turned out okay in the end!
The pep talk from Siegfried and Percival clears the doubt that had clouded Vane's heart.
(Captain) watches this happy outcome with a smile that's as wide as Vane's.
Ordinary Heroics: Scene 4
Lancelot returns to the castle and notices something different about Vane's attitude, so Vane recounts what happened while Lancelot was away. Lancelot assures Vane that he was promoted to vice-captain based on his qualifications, then suggests they let off some steam by sparring. After their refreshing bout, Vane declares his intention to become a hero who protects everyone.
Lancelot: Hey, Vane. I just got back.
Vane: Good to see you, Lancey! Hungry? Want me to whip up something?
Lancelot: No, I'm fine for now.
Vane: Oh, right! You must be tired, having just got back an' all.
Lancelot: You can say that again. Um, did something happen while I was away?
Vane: No... Can't really think of anything.
Lancelot: Huh. I can't put my finger on it, but you seem a bit tenser than normal...
Lancelot senses a minute change in the vice-captain.
Vane: Haha. Nothing gets by you, Lancey.
Vane decides it's better to report everything that happened during Lancelot's absence.
Lancelot: I see. I'm disappointed to hear such an incident occurred.
Lancelot: I will lecture those knights about their unbecoming behavior.
Vane: Wait, could you hold off on that for now?
Vane: I want to resolve the matter myself somehow.
Lancelot: All right, if that's what you want.
Vane: But you know, I still can't get over what (Captain), Siegfried, and Percival did for me.
Vane: Knowing that everyone came to see me... Man, I can't tell you how moved I was.
Lancelot: Haha. Of course they were concerned about you.
Vane: Hahaha. I owe them a lot. I mean, people should come to a vice-captain with their problems, not the other way around.
Lancelot: Vane, you're the one who's always helping everyone around you.
Lancelot: What's wrong with a vice-captain relying on others every now and then?
Vane grows serious as he mulls over Lancelot's words.
Vane: Tell me something, Lancey. Why did you recommend me for the vice-captain position?
Vane: I mean, there were other viable candidates, right?
Lancelot: My decision was obvious from the start.
Lancelot: I thought you were the right man for the job.
Vane: It didn't hit me at the time, but I was promoted to vice-captain thanks to you.
Lancelot: Not so, Vane.
Lancelot: All I did was submit your name for discussion. The decision came from His Majesty and the other knights.
Lancelot: Do you really think the Order of the White Dragons would be so inept as to install an inadequate vice-captain?
Vane: No, they know better than that. Thanks, Lancey.
Vane: But the fact still remains that I'm vice-captain because of you.
Vane: I was always thinkin', "I wanna fight together with Lancey!" That's why I never lost my motivation to move up.
Lancelot: Hah. You're still the same guy I knew way back when.
With the conversation seemingly winding down, Lancelot takes a big stretch and readdresses his second-in-command.
Lancelot: Hey, Vane.
Lancelot: When was the last time we sparred? How about a go?
Vane: You're on!
They go to the training grounds, now empty of knights who have left for the night. They silently square off.
Lancelot: Are you ready for this?
Vane: Always! Come at me, Lancelot!
Lancelot: I'm not playing around!
Vane: Sounds good to me!
The childhood friends give everything they have in this match, forgetting the time as they test each other's strength.
They seem to be enjoying themselves.
Lancelot: Huff... Huff...
Vane: Huff... Huff...
They collapse onto the grass, energy spent, and gaze at the stars above.
Lancelot: Reminds you of home, doesn't it?
Vane: Hehe, those were some good times.
Lancelot: We haven't had the time to spar recently, have we?
Lancelot: Feeling refreshed?
Vane: Yep. A little exercise is a sure cure for the blues!
Lancelot, seeing the smile on Vane's face, gives one of his own.
Lancelot: You've gotten stronger than everyone else, and I'm not saying that just because I've known you for ages.
Lancelot: Honestly, I don't stack up to your raw strength and constitution.
Lancelot: You're amazing and an accomplished vice-captain, regardless of what anyone says.
Vane: Thanks... Lancey.
Vane: I'm not gonna stop here, you know. I wanna get stronger and stronger.
Vane: When the chips are down, I wanna be able to protect you and everyone else.
Vane: To be a super cool, super strong hero. That's who I wanna be!
Lancelot: Mm... If anyone can pull it off, it's you.
Lancelot: Be the best hero you can be—the guardian of the people!
They talk and talk throughout the night with no signs of stopping.
One for All
Vane leads a unit of White Dragons consisting of the two knights who had gossiped about him, Team Chickadee, and Henry to investigate the abduction of livestock. The unit arrives at the remote village where the crime took place, and prioritizes checking the crime scene. Afterward the village chief persuades the knights to attend a welcome party prepared by the villagers.
One day, the Order of the White Dragons receives a letter from a rural village not far from Vane and Lancelot's hometown.
There have been attacks on the livestock, and the villagers would like the White Dragons to investigate.
Vane is familiar with the area, so he agrees to lead a unit of knights to the village.
Vane: This is the first time you guys have joined my unit, isn't that right?
White Dragons: Y-yes, sir!
Vane: Just as I thought! Well, let's all do our best today!
White Dragons: We will do our best, sir!
White Dragon 1: (Crud... We are so screwed. There's no way he didn't overhear us talking...)
White Dragon 2: (What's he gonna do to us? Are we gonna suffer an "accident" in the line of duty? Ungh... Don't wanna think about it...)
Vane: (I feel like I should do something. I'm fine working with them on the mission, but I don't wanna accidentally make things more awkward.)
The Two: (Sigh... Now what?)
The two knights assigned to Vane's unit happen to be the very same ones who had gossiped about him days earlier.
Vane: As for our special field trip brigade, this is a good chance to learn, so watch your seniors carefully, okay?
The Five: Yes, sir!
Arthur and his fellow knights-in-training have also been added to the unit so that they can accumulate valuable field experience.
Arthur: Whoo-hoo! Leaving the castle for a real mission gets me all fired up!
Mordred: Yeah! I was starting to get sick of punching the same training dummies over and over again.
Tornelio: Um, you two might be used to running into monsters outside the castle, but I'm not.
Cruz: Just remember your training, and you'll be fine, Tornelio.
Henry: Never fear! I'll beat up any monsters that try to jump us!
Mordred: Groan... Stuck with an annoying team member again.
Arthur: Heh! Come on! Who wouldn't be hopping up and down for a piece of the action with the pros!
Vane: Listen up, you guys. This isn't supposed to be a dangerous job, but you still have to take it seriously!
The lighthearted banter continues until the unit arrives at the village.
Village Chief: Welcome, all, to our humble home!
Village Chief: To think the Order of the White Dragons would grace our remote village! It is an honor!
Vane: Oh, we're just doing our jobs! It's our duty to keep peace for everyone!
Village Chief: Even so, you must be tired from your journey. We've prepared a smorgasbord of food for you all. If you would please follow me.
Arthur: Psst. What's a smorgasbord? Sounds like it's full of deliciousness!
Mordred: Quiet! We're on duty!
Vane: Actually, could we visit the crime scene first? If it's all right with you.
Village Chief: Hm, as you wish. Thank you for handling this with utmost priority. This way please.
The village chief leads Vane's unit to where the livestock had been attacked.
Vane: This is awful...
White Dragon 1: The work of feral beasts perhaps?
Vane: No. I think they would've left behind a huge mess if it had been them. This is too clean.
White Dragon 2: Yeah... Some more scratches or tracks showing who was here would be helpful.
Vane: It feels like the livestock were whisked away in an instant.
Vane: Hm, take a look at this.
Splotches of blood dot the side of a shed.
Vane: Doesn't it look like the stain suddenly stops here?
Arthur: It sure does! Almost like it got wiped off!
Mordred: Were there no witnesses at all?
Vane: A villager said the shed was completely empty by the time they noticed something wrong.
Tornelio: That's freaky...
Cruz: Gone without a trace.
Vane: Yes, as if they were spirited away. I think the villagers mentioned something about that.
Henry: D-doesn't matter what happened, we're here now so everything's gonna be okay!
Vane: Right you are. We're putting a stop to any more victims.
Vane: (There's something not right about this... But what?)
???: Recently there's been incidents of livestock simply vanishing from the pens on the village outskirts.
???: Oh dear. How frightening. You stay away from that dangerous place, okay, Vane?
Vane: Chief, when did the last of the livestock go missing?
Village Chief: I believe it was a little before we sent the letter.
Village Chief: After that we rounded up our remaining animals and herded them into the center of the village for safety.
Village Chief: The incidents stopped after that, but the threat of recurrence leaves us worried.
Vane: Understood. On the name of the White Dragons, we swear to solve this mystery.
Village Chief: Thank you, O knights!
Village Chief: Now that you've checked the crime scene, allow me once more to invite you to enjoy the smorgasbord.
Vane: That's okay! We're here on official business, so you don't have to treat us to anything.
Village Chief: But this is the collective wish of the villagers!
Village Chief: We won't be able to sleep knowing we couldn't even offer you a cup of tea!
Vane: Ahaha. Is that so?
Vane: (This is a tough call. I don't want to risk making things tougher by damaging our relationship with them.)
Vane: All right then. If that's how much it means to the village, then we'll join you.
Village Chief: Thank you! The preparations won't take long, so please follow me!
The excited chief hastens to the front of the knights and beckons them to follow.
Vane: Well, since they went to all the trouble, do you guys mind coming too?
White Dragon 1: Do you think that's a good idea?
Vane: Sure. We can use it as a chance to grab intel!
White Dragon 2: If their hospitality extends to us as well, then we're in.
Arthur: Whoo-hoo! Smorgasbord!
Mordred: Arthur! You're not some little kid anymore! Get serious!
Tornelio: Wait, when were we invited?
Cruz: I'll follow the vice-captain's orders.
Henry: You know what they say! "You can't fight on an empty stomach!"
Vane: Hahaha! Be on your best behavior, everyone!
And so Vane and company accept their positions as guests of honor at the village banquet.
One for All: Scene 2
Knights and villagers alike are enjoying themselves at the welcome party, when the cries of wyverns rattle the village. Vane orders the knights to help evacuate any straggling villagers while he tries to stop the horde from taking off with the livestock. His plans change when he sees the village chief's family coming under attack, and he prays he can save them in time.
Vane and the White Dragons are treated to a feast at the village's main lodge.
Village Chief: So your name is Vane? And you're the vice-captain of the Order of the White Dragons?
Vane: Wahaha! I surely am!
Village Chief: I had heard that Captain Lancelot was quite young, though I never expected his second-in-command to be this young either.
Vane: Yeah, I don't really look the part of a vice-captain, do I?
Village Chief: Pardon my words! We never dreamed that someone of your status would personally pay our rural village a visit!
Village Chief: I'm mortified at myself for mistaking you for a regular knight!
Vane: No, no! Don't apologize! Anybody would have made the same mistake! Hahaha!
Vane: (Sigh... The evidence keeps piling up. I don't give off that vice-captain vibe at all.)
Arthur: (Looks like it's bugging Vane.)
Mordred: (Yeah... That's his down-in-the-dumps face.)
Tornelio: (Then I don't think we should get ourselves involved.)
Henry: (Maybe we were buttering him up too much...)
The village chief's two children come charging in, stopping at Vane's feet.
Small Boy: Let's play, Vane!
Small Girl: Aw, no fair! You promised I get to go first!
Vane: Then how about I take you both on!
Small Boy: Yay! Let's go!
Small Girl: Whee!
Vane: Aaaand anchors aweigh!
Vane hoists the two children like loaves of bread.
Small Boy: Yeehaha! This is so fun!
Small Girl: Ahahaha! I'm gonna fall!
Mother: Stop that, you two! Leave the nice knight alone! He's working right now!
Vane: Wahaha! This is no bother at all!
Vane: Come on, fellas! Give me a hand with these tykes!
Arthur: Okay! Me and Mordred play with the little ones at the orphanage all the time, so this'll be easy!
Small Boy: Hehe! So many knights to play with!
Small Girl: Let's play! Let's play!
Mordred: Why do I gotta... Fine, fine!
Tornelio: You too, Cruz!
Henry: It's my turn to shine! Okay, you kids! Do your worst!
White Dragon 1: Hahaha... Talk about teamwork.
White Dragon 2: Yep. The vice-captain runs a tight unit.
The older knights are starting to warm up to the unit as they watch this mirthful scene.
Village Chief: Your visit has brought much needed brightness to a village in dark times. You have truly saved us.
White Dragon 1: No, sir, we haven't even—
Village Chief: I'm glad we didn't waste our rupies on money-grubbing mercenaries.
White Dragon 2: The White Dragons will bring this situation to order. It is our responsibility to—
Vane: Solve this mystery!
White Dragon 2: Vice-Captain Vane!
Vane: Hey, we need backup! That means you two!
White Dragon 1: Yes, sir!
Every member of Vane's unit is now engaging with the villagers at the party, their friendships growing stronger by the minute.
But as the party is about to reach full swing, a scream reverberates through the village.
Vane: Let's go!
The Seven: Yes, sir!
As the knights approach the scene of the wailing, they see wyverns attacking villagers gathered by the livestock.
Villager: Help us please!
Vane: Are you okay?
Wyvern Horde: Gyaaagh!
Vane watches as a flight of wyverns snatches the livestock and flies off.
Vane: Those are the criminals!
Vane: They formed a group just to get at the livestock.
The Two: Vice-Captain Vane!
Vane: Leave the wyverns to me!
Vane: The rest of you split up and take care of any injured villagers you find!
The Seven: Yes, sir!
The knights quickly scatter on Vane's order.
Vane: All right, you uglies! Now you're dealing with me!
Vane is about to attack when he sees some villagers trying to fend off wyverns.
Wyvern Horde: Fssshaa!
Village Chief: Now, kids! Run!
Small Boy: Boohoo! Scary!
Small Girl: Daddy! Mommy!
Mother: Daddy and Mommy are going to take care of things here! Run! Go!
Vane: What the! What are they doing over there!
Wyvern Horde: Gyaaagh!
The wyverns bear down on the chief's family.
Vane: Damn it...
Vane sprints to the vulnerable family with all his might.
Vane: I have to reach them! Please let me get there in time!
One for All: Scene 3
Vane—seeing a striking resemblance in this wyvern attack on the chief's family to the one that claimed his parents when he was a child—is able to save the family, and he singlehandedly repels the wyvern horde. Injured and bloodied, he intends to fight the oncoming giant dragon and returning wyverns alone, but the other knights rally to his side, providing him with cover from the horde so that he can focus on the dragon.
Vane remembers a time in his life in which he was completely helpless.
Wyvern Horde: Fshaa!
???: Now, Vane! Run!
???: Daddy and Mommy are going to take care of things here! Run! Go!
Wyvern Horde: Gyaaagh!
???: Don't worry, Vane! You're a strong, kind boy! It's going to be all right!
???: Mommy loves you very much, Vane. You have to keep living!
???: Dad! Mom!
He has no recollection of how his life was spared that day.
All he can remember is the look on his parents' faces in their final moments.
Vane: (Dad! Mom!)
Vane: Aaagh! Get back, you fiends!
Wyvern Horde: Gyaaah...
Vane expertly wipes out the wyverns and saves the besieged family.
Vane: Huff... Huff... I made it...
Village Chief: Vane! Thank you for saving us!
Vane: Is anyone hurt?
Small Boy: I'm... okay!
Small Girl: Wow, you took them out all by yourself!
Mother: I can't thank you enough for saving my two little munchkins.
Vane: I'm glad your family is safe.
Vane: But it's too dangerous to stay here. I think you should find somewhere safer to hole up in.
Village Chief: I believe the main lodge should provide us better security.
Vane: Okay! I want you all to hide there while me and the White Dragons secure the area!
Village Chief: Understood!
Vane: Actually, it might be a good idea to gather all the villagers in the main lodge...
All of a sudden a great number of reptilian menaces come flooding in as if a dam had burst.
Wyvern Horde: Gyaaagh!
White Dragon 1: What the hell? I've never seen so many wyverns in one place!
White Dragon 2: Yeah... We can't handle this many on our own!
White Dragon 1: But there's no time for us to call for reinforcements—
White Dragon 2: Behind you!
Wyvern Horde: Gyaaaagh!
White Dragon 1: Aaaah!
A wyvern catches one knight off guard and attempts to drag him away.
White Dragon 2: Stop! Put him down!
Wyvern Horde: Gyraahh!
White Dragon 2: Crap! I'm exposed from behind!
The remaining knight is about to suffer the same fate as his comrade.
Wyvern Horde: Nggh...
Vane: One more time!
Wyvern Horde: Ggnh...
Vane minces through the wyverns in an instant, saving the lives of his subordinates.
White Dragon 2: Thank you, Vice-Captain Vane!
White Dragon 1: That was too close... We were almost wyvern chow.
Vane: No problem. No matter what happens to you guys, I'll be there to save you!
Vane: So keep calm and fight with all your might!
White Dragons: Yes, sir!
Vane: All right...
Vane exhales deeply and gives a rousing speech to his embattled unit.
Vane: Listen up, everyone! I'm going to hold back the horde!
Vane: In the meantime, I want you all to round any straggling villagers, and get them to the main lodge!
Vane: I know their numbers are daunting, but if we keep a level head and work together, there's no enemy we can't overcome!
The Seven: Roger!
Each knight peels off to do their duty.
Vane, having complete faith in his knights, turns his attention back to the enemies at hand.
Vane: All right, you scaly beasties. Not a single one of you is getting past me!
Wyvern Horde: Gyaagh!
Wyvern Horde: Rngh...
Wyvern Horde: Grrr...
Wyvern Horde: Nggh...
Vane: I'm just getting started!
Wyverns fall left and right to Vane's might.
Wyvern Horde: Gyaaaagh!
Wyvern Horde: Grrr!
Wyvern Horde: Raaaogh!
But their superior numbers soon prove too much for Vane. His knees crash to the ground.
Vane: Huff... Wheeze... Boy, there sure are a lot of them...
Vane: Damn! Is this the end of the road for me?
Despite the pain of his wound-riddled body, he hears his friends' encouraging words echo in his head.
(Captain) ticks off examples of the times Vane saved them from dire situations.
Percival: But as you are now, I dare say you make a decent vice-captain of the White Dragons.
Siegfried: The genuine smile you give everyone around you makes you a true hero.
Lancelot: Mm... If anyone can pull it off, it's you.
Lancelot: Be the best hero you can be—the guardian of the people!
And just like that, Vane feels a surge of power run through his body.
Vane: Hehe... Compared to all the adversity I've conquered with everyone, this is nothing!
Vane: Because I...
Vane: I'm a hero that protects the people!
Vane puts every drop of strength into his next attacks.
Wyvern Horde: Gyaaagh!
At last he's able to turn the tide against the wave of wyverns.
Vane: Huff... Huff...
Vane: I did it!
The rest of the White Dragons come running back as soon as they finish evacuating the villagers.
White Dragon 1: Vice-Captain Vane!
White Dragon 2: Are you all right!
Tornelio: Y-you're bleeding everywhere!
Vane: Don't worry about me. These are just scratches.
Cruz: Something's coming...
Mordred: What the heck is that?
Mordred points to a giant dragon flying their way.
Arthur: It kinda looks like the dragon Lancelot and the others once fought.
Mordred: Yeah, now that you mention it...
Henry: What the heck! No one said anything about facing giant dragons!
Wyvern Horde: Gyaaaagh!
The wyverns flock to the dragon's side.
Vane: Looks like that dragon might be the big boss or something.
Vane: I'll handle this, so you guys fall back—
White Dragons: We're fighting with you!
Arthur: So are we! We don't want to be a handicap anymore!
Mordred: That's right! Don't try to carry everything on your shoulders!
Tornelio: Let us protect our vice-captain sometimes!
Cruz: We'll watch your back.
Henry: Please, Vice-Captain Vane!
Every man in Vane's unit vows to fight for their vice-captain.
Vane: Thanks, everyone...
Vane: I can rest easy knowing I've got the swellest bunch in the skies.
Vane stumbles over his words a little, but his appreciation is evident.
Vane: Here's the plan. I'll take the big one.
Vane: Can I count on the rest of you to keep the wyverns off me?
White Dragons: Yes, sir! As you command!
Arthur: Understood! We'll beat up the wyverns!
Mordred: You just concentrate on the big one!
Tornelio: We'll be right behind you!
Cruz: There's no way the vice-captain can lose.
Henry: You have to beat it!
Vane: I know... Thanks, guys!
Vane's confidence in his unit allows him to focus on engaging the dragon.
Vane: I am the vice-captain of the Order of the White Dragons!
Vane: I don't know the meaning of the word defeat! With my friends at my side, this fight was over before it started!
One for All: Scene 4
Vane defeats the dragon, and he's mobbed by an adoring crowd of fellow knights and villagers. Vane downplays his actions, saying it was a team effort. He travels alone to his family's grave, giving his deceased parents and grandmother a life update and promising to introduce his friends next time. Vane has taken yet another step toward becoming the hero he's always dreamed of being.
Vane: I fight for all the people of the sky!
Vane: Loewenbein... Jagd!
Vane slices through the giant dragon with his final attack.
Giant Dragon: Graagh...
Vane: Huff... Huff... And that's the end of that...
Vane's declaration is correct. The giant dragon falls silent.
Arthur: Oh maaan! The vice-captain was so cool!
Mordred: Totally! He took out that big brute like bam!
Tornelio: Are you sure you're not hurting, Vice-Captain?
Vane: I'm fine. Other injured people come first!
Cruz: Anybody can see you need the most medical attention.
Vane: Wahaha! Is that right?
Henry: We will now administer emergency first aid, so please don't move!
Vane: Okay. 'Preciate it!
While Vane gets bandaged, the senior knights approach him with sheepish looks.
White Dragon 1: Sir, there's something we'd like to confess...
White Dragon 2: We were talking about you a few days ago, and—
Vane: Hey, forget about that!
Vane: As long as you two are safe, I've got nothing else to say on the matter!
White Dragon 1: Vice-Captain...
White Dragon 2: Thank you for everything!
Vane: So what do you think? Would you consider joining my unit again in the future?
White Dragons: Absolutely, sir!
Vane: Wahaha! In any case, there's nothing better than all of us making it home safely!
Village Chief: Vice-Captain Vane!
The villagers come out of hiding and crowd around the knights, eager to greet their heroes.
Village Chief: Thank you so much for what you've done for our village, O knights!
Mother: If you hadn't answered our plea, I can't bear to think of what would've happened to us...
Arthur: We didn't do much though. It was Vice-Captain Vane who did most of the heavy stuff!
Mordred: Yeah, without him, it would've been real dicey.
Vane: That's not true, you two.
Vane: I was able to defeat the dragon because I knew you guys had my back.
Vane: By taking care of your individual responsibilities, you all gave me the peace of mind to go all out.
Vane nods at the knights who had fought for him.
Arthur: Well, I don't mind taking some of the credit! Glad I could help!
Vane: This was a team victory through and through.
Mordred: Still, I think we can do more next time. We'll work harder to be helpful.
Vane: Great. I can't wait to see how far you can go.
Vane feels a tug at his legs, and he looks down at two pairs of eyes beaming up at him.
Small Boy: Wow! The captain of the White Dragons is so strong!
Vane: Whoa there! I'm the vice-captain, remember?
Small Girl: Vice... captain?
Small Boy: Um... But vice-captain has captain in it!
Vane: Hm? Yes, but that doesn't mean—
Small Girl: Uh-huh! Captain Vane is the coolest!
Vane: Haha! Oh yeah? Thanks!
Small Boy: Can I become a cool hero like you someday?
Vane: Sure, why not?
Vane: I recommend joining the White Dragons to help you on your way!
Small Boy: Okay! I'll definitely join!
Small Girl: I'm gonna be a knight!
Village Chief: Hahaha! There's no way us simple frontier folk can become knights!
Mother: That's right, dears. Knights are for the nobles.
Vane: No, that's not true at all!
Vane: Anyone who takes the entrance test has a chance to pass!
Village Chief: Is that right?
Vane: Definitely! In fact, I was born in a village not too far from here!
Mother: Oh my, I had no idea! And look what a fine young man you've become!
Village Chief: Your family must be so proud of you!
Vane: Yeah... I'm sure they are.
A thought suddenly pops into Vane's head, and he apologetically excuses himself.
Vane: I'm sorry, but I just remembered I have something else to take care of.
Vane: Do you mind staying here for a bit till I get back?
White Dragon 1: Yes, sir! We'll help the village clean up in the meantime.
Vane: Thanks a bunch! I'll be back!
They watch as Vane goes off alone.
He arrives at his destination—a cemetery.
Vane: I need to thank Lancey's parents for keeping the grave tidy.
Vane kneels in front of a well-maintained tombstone.
Vane: Hey, Dad. Hey, Mom. Hey, Grandma.
Vane: I was just on a mission nearby, so I thought I'd drop by and say hi.
Vane: Sorry I haven't visited in a while. Kinda got backed up with work, you know?
Vane: Did you I tell that I got promoted to vice-captain of the White Dragons?
Vane: I couldn't believe it either when I heard the news. Crybaby Vane, working side by side with Captain Lancey. Makes you laugh, doesn't it?
Vane: So one of my duties is to train the younger knights and show them the way.
Vane: Arthur, Mordred, Tornelio, Cruz, and Henry. They're good kids and full of energy.
Vane: The days always go by so fast with them around. Times flies when you're having fun as they say. Too fast maybe.
Vane: Oh, but I've made lots of friends outside the order too.
Vane: From Siegfried to Percival...
Vane: Plus there's (Captain), Vyrn, and Lyria.
Vane: They're all like family to me.
Vane: So I guess what I'm saying is... I'm not alone at all, you know?
Vane's voice trembles, and he hastily wipes his eyes.
Vane: Hehehe... Can't have Crybaby Vane spoiling the good mood, can we?
Vane: Because heroes always smile.
Tears drip over his upturned lips.
Vane: Anyway, I should be getting back to the others now. They're all waiting for me.
Vane: Next time I'll bring my friends over and introduce you to the gang.
Vane says one more goodbye and slowly walks away from the gravestone.
A Familiar Voice: (Take good care of yourself.)
Hearing the sudden call of beloved voices causes him to stop and instinctively turn around.
Vane: I will. I'll come back soon!
After rendezvousing with the other knights, Vane's unit returns to the capital without further incident.
With everything taken care of, Vane walks into Lancelot's office with a satisfied smile.
Vane: I'm back, Lancey.
Lancelot: Welcome back, Vane.
Vane: Phew... This last mission was exhausting.
Lancelot: Mm... It certainly seems that way.
Vane: I wasn't expecting it to go so off the rails.
Lancelot: Thanks for all the work you put in.
Vane: I'm still kinda processing everything that happened.
Vane: So I hope you don't mind me taking a small break. I'll write up a full report afterward.
Lancelot: Of course. Take your time.
Lancelot: I've already heard the tales of your exploits from Arthur and the others.
Vane: Ahaha... Well, I couldn't have done it without them though.
Vane: But I guess I have gotten stronger without even realizing it.
Lancelot: Haha. Isn't that what I've been saying?
Lancelot: You've always had a gift when it comes to people, more so than me.
Lancelot: That's why you're invincible when you're fighting to protect something...
Lancelot: Knocked out before I could even finish...
Lancelot: Haha. I'll remember to tell you again next time.
Lancelot: Rest well, Vane.
With a bemused smile, Lancelot gently drapes a blanket over Vane.
The events leading up to now have allowed Vane to take another step toward being the hero he envisions.
If it's for the sake of protecting those he loves and cares about, he will don the cape of a hero who smiles through any and all obstacles.
