Auguste of the Dead - Chapter 5: One Cut of the Meg - Episode 4

Believing the frequent appearance of monsters to be a sign of the ocean rejecting the existing mortals and primals, the chairperson eventually came up with the Auguste Purification Plan. Driven by Auguste's rivalry with Alohas, a new and more popular tourist destination, he decided to execute the plan despite some initial hesitation. It was then that a mysterious person appeared in front of the chairperson and presented him with Rugiet, telling the man to use the orca for his plans.

Chairperson: Sigh... Auguste is no longer the place we loved and treasured...
Chairperson: Why do those cursed creatures keep appearing during the summer?
Chairperson: It's almost like they're doing it on purpose. And now, both tourists and residents are left with nothing but traumatic memories...
Chairperson: Wait a second.
It was then that a new idea was born from within the darkness shrouding the chairperson's mind.
Chairperson: Could this be... a message? Is the ocean trying to tell us something by instilling fear into people's hearts and causing chaos among us?
Chairperson: Is this a kind of... punishment?
Chairperson: The Auguste sea is angry at people, primal beasts, and monsters alike for thoughtlessly trespassing into its territory.
Chairperson: That's why it's causing such incidents to happen during vacation season... It's to tell us of its anger!
It didn't take long for the chairperson to come up with the Auguste Purification Plan from there.
First, a certain number of creatures are to be turned into zombies that will go on to attack other creatures around them, spreading the zombie virus.
Once the creatures have all become zombies, their life energy will begin to drain. Before long, all of the creatures will rot and be returned to the ocean.
The ocean will take in the nutrients from these creatures and give birth to new and gentle life-forms, thus restoring the peace to Auguste.
Chairperson: Yes, that's it... Heheh... If I can do that, then Auguste will go back to the way it was before!
The chairperson then used his authority to gain access to the Ocean Research Center's data and started gathering information on sea creatures.
At the same time, he also began to study the sciences through correspondence courses.
All for the sake of creating a zombie virus that can be effective on all living creatures in Auguste.
Chairperson: What am I doing... The virus is almost complete, but... am I really going to do this?
Chairperson: Last year, we had the incident with the colossal hermit crab, and then we had to deal with Rugiet—though news about the latter didn't spread much.
Child 1: Ahaha!
Child 2: Come on, let's go!
Chairperson: But luckily, this year, nothing happened during the summer season and it wrapped up peacefully.
Chairperson: The children are playing without a worry too. Maybe I don't need to go through with the purification plan after all...
The fact that no horrendous creature had disrupted the peace in Auguste this year made the man think over his plans once again.
However, on that very day, the chairperson happened to hear something in town that took him by surprise.
Child 1: Geez, Auguste is such a drag!
Child 2: Right? Alohas is, like, a gazillion times better!
Chairperson: ...!
Chairperson: Is that true?
Association Member: ...!
Chairperson: (How could this be...)
The children's exchange and his coworker's ashamed reaction told him everything that he needed to know.
The "Alohas" the children spoke of was a brand-new amusement facility that had been attracting a large number of tourists.
Chairperson: Auguste is losing its status as a holiday destination because of all these stupid incidents caused by stupid creatures...
Chairperson: This is how far we've fallen... Hahaha... Very well.
Chairperson: If Auguste is only going to sink further as a tourist spot from here on, then why don't we end this once and for all?
His conviction renewed, the chairperson decided to carry out his plan when the next vacation season came around.
As preparation, he gave cleaner fish the ability to fly and took advantange of the schooling behavior of the fish, zombifying them one by one.
The chairperson was about to finally begin the Auguste Purification Plan when he encountered a mysterious man carrying something over his shoulder.
???: Use this.
Rugiet: Scrrrr...
The chairperson recognized the large creature the man put in front of him.
Chairperson: Rugiet? But... how? Who in the skies are you, and how'd you find this place?
???: I'm aware of everything you've been doing—especially the things happening around water.
Chairperson: What do you mean? And what are you suggesting I do with Rugiet?
???: If death is what you wish for Auguste, I won't stop you. I'll even lend you my help should you need it.
???: You can use this orca for your plans and have it obey you. You're capable of doing that much, aren't you?
Chairperson: Yes, if I zombify it... Did you catch Rugiet? By yourself... in the middle of the ocean?
???: Swimming is my speciality.
After presenting the orca to the chairperson, the stranger continued to visit the chairperson at his own whim.
The man never told the chairperson who he was, or how he came to be aware of the purification plan.
Still, despite never having been acquainted with the man, the chairperson couldn't help but feel a sense of nostalgia whenever they were together.
