The Cursed Mask
Rosamia is a young knight who is cursed by a mask created by the empire—a mask that forces her to fight against her will. (Captain) extends a hand in friendship against a common enemy.
The crew comes across a knight fighting a one-woman battle against savage monsters.
She fights bravely, but her swings are wild and reckless. (Captain) rushes to her aid without question.
Rosamia: I don't need your help! I mean it! Leave!
Vyrn: Yeah, right! As if we'd leave behind someone in trouble!
Vyrn: We can do it! (Captain)'s got your back!
Rosamia: Tch. Such bravado.
Vyrn: Whew. We somehow took care of those monsters.
Lyria: Oh no! You're hurt! Let me take a look—
Rosamia: Don't come near me!
Rosamia: (What would you people do if you fell prey to this cursed mask?)
Rosamia: On the other hand, would it be so bad to be freed from this curse?
Gasp!
Vyrn: I heard that! I don't know what you're on about, but I don't like it!
Rosamia: No need to worry. I just got my thoughts and words mixed up, that's all.
Vyrn: Thoughts and words mixed up? How does that even... Never mind. Anyway, what's the deal with this mask and curse?
Rosamia: So I can't convince you to drop it? Fine. But I hope you won't come to regret it.
Rosamia: The Erste Empire created this mask. It extinguishes the wearer's sense of self, compelling them to fight beyond their limits.
Even as a child, Rosamia's prodigious skill in battle caught the attention of the empire. She was summoned to take part in a military experiment.
Rosamia was found to be compatible with the mask. Forced to wear the mask, it kept her in a state of a constant need to fight.
But she rejected her fate as a test subject and absconded with the sum of the empire's research. She's been on the run ever since.
Rosamia: By the time my eyes had opened to the empire's trickery, I'd already fallen prey to the mask's curse.
Vyrn: I can't believe they'd stoop to such despicable experiments! Hey, (Captain), why don't you just smash the mask with your sword?
Rosamia: Fool. If only it were that easy—
Rosamia: Wait, is that Thunder Rapier? No, it can't be! Where did you get it?
Lyria: Um... Do you know something about this sword?
Rosamia: My parents entrusted me with that blade on the day I left them. There's no mistaking such fine craftsmanship.
Vyrn: Oh, whoa! So this sword is yours then?
Rosamia: Its beautiful form has been passed down in my household for generations.
Rosamia: It was my parent's farewell gift until the army took it from me. They said I would have no need for sentimentality. I never thought I'd see it again.
Lyria: That's so sad... But why don't you go home, now that you've escaped from the empire?
Rosamia: Don't be foolish. I have no idea when this mask will take over.
Rosamia: How can I return home knowing I might lose myself and turn on my family?
Vyrn: I see. That's why you're out here fighting monsters alone in your darkest hour...
- Now we have to do something.
- Let's foil the empire's plans.
Choose: Now we have to do something.Rosamia: I don't want to hurt anyone close to me. That's why I have to do this alone.
Vyrn: I get that, but if you wanna stick it to the empire, we can help you!
Choose: Let's foil the empire's plans.Rosamia: Do you understand what you're proposing? We're talking about the empire here.
Vyrn: Hehe! You heard us! We've been duking it out with the empire since, like, forever!
Continue 1Vyrn: So what if the mask starts acting up? (Captain) and I'll stop it!
Rosamia: You're quite the meddlesome bunch. You must be fools to stand against the empire with such naivety. Fools of the highest order.
Vyrn: Pft, you need to work on keepin' your inner thoughts to yourself. Oh well, we've been called worse things.
Vyrn: All right! We'll break this curse, you and us together!
Rosamia sets out with her new companions, filled with renewed resolve.
She's ready to face the curse of the mask, hoping to one day see her beloved parents again.
The Masked Traitor
In order to search for clues about Rosamia's mask, the crew arrives at an island rumored to harbor an imperial research facility. However, their investigation is blocked by an imperial soldier and something more sinister.
The crew disembarks on an island said to house an imperial research facility. They intend to look for clues pertaining to Rosamia's mask.
Vyrn: There's something really fishy about this island. If the rumors are true, the empire is conducting some kind of experiment here!
Rosamia: Yes. I erased the research data on the mask, so they would have to start from scratch.
Vyrn: All right! Then let's crush the empire's conspiracy!
Vyrn: We'll start by finding the facilities first! Now if I were a research facility, where would I be?
Lyria: Well, I think—oh? Hey, look at the girl in this poster. Doesn't she look like...
Vyrn: It's a wanted poster for Rosamia!
Vyrn: The Masked Traitor? Is the empire trying to frame you as a criminal?
Rosamia: Actually, Masked Traitor makes sense from their point of view.
Vyrn: Bah! That's so dirty! We're gonna have a hard time moving around if this spreads!
Rosamia: I can't cause any more trouble for you and the others.
Rosamia: I knew I shouldn't have joined you.
Vyrn: That's not true! Don't say things like that! It's the empire's fault!
Lyria: Exactly! They're the bad guys, Rosamia!
Imperial Soldier: Halt! I don't recognize you lot. What are you doing here? Wait, you're...
Imperial Soldier: Well, well, if it isn't Rosamia the traitor. I thought I smelled a rat.
Vyrn: This guy knows Rosamia?
Imperial Soldier: Heh, don't tell me you've forgotten me! I used to take real good care of you back at that lab, remember?
Rosamia: I have no memory of this bottom-feeder, but I'll play along to drag out information.
Rosamia: Th-that's right. You did take care of me, didn't you?
Vyrn: D'oh! You said the quiet part loud and the loud part quiet!
Imperial Soldier: Bottom-feeder? A bottom-feeder!
Imperial Soldier: Curse you. I'll show you what a bottom-feeder can do! The reward for bringing you in is mine.
Imperial Soldier: Heh! Allow me to show you the fruits of our research! You think you can handle this?
Vyrn: Yikes! So this is what they've been working on! We have to fight it, (Captain)!
The Masked Traitor: Scene 2
The crew follows the fleeing soldier to the research facility. A creature born from the lab has gone out of control, and only (Captain) and company can stop it.
Rosamia: Words fail me. The empire has some gall to call this research.
Imperial Soldier: What would you know? You shouldn't feel proud of yourself for besting a half-finished beast!
Rosamia: I'm not going to waste my breath on pond scum. Tell me where the facility is or else.
Lyria: Wow... Rosamia sounds like a real boss! Scary.
Imperial Soldier: Ugh! You'll live to regret this!
Vyrn: Grrr! He ran for it! Boy, he's quick!
Rosamia: After him! He might lead us to the source!
Vyrn: Gotcha! Let's go, (Captain)!
Vyrn: Hmm. So this is the research facility. There's hardly any security. What's going on?
Rosamia: Fool. It's a trap.
Vyrn: Wha? Why didn't you speak up earlier if you knew it was a trap? Are we gonna be okay?
Imperial Soldier: Huff... Huff... The monster of this lab feels no pain or fatigue and can fight on forever!
Imperial Soldier: Hehe! Go ahead and act high and mighty while you still can! You'll all make a delicious feast!
Vyrn: That's horrible. Don't tell me you're planning on using this research on people?
Imperial Soldier: Now there's an idea. We could use more guinea pigs like that masked girl. No? Well, you'll have to beat this monster then if you want out!
Monster: Grrrr...
Rosamia: ...
Vyrn: Shoot! This one looks strong! Be careful, (Captain)!
Monster: Grooar!
Imperial Soldier: What the! It's not listening to me!
Imperial Soldier: Gyaaah! It's attacking everything! You've gotta help me!
Rosamia: You can't even clean up after your own mess. In that case, I'll raze this place to the ground for you!
Vyrn: All right, (Captain)! No need to hold back! Let's get them!
The Masked Traitor: Scene 3
The imperial research facility is destroyed, along with the monster and research data. The crew continues on their journey, awaiting the day Rosamia is freed from the chains of the mask.
Vyrn: Yeah! How do you like that! I feel sorry for the monster, but we smashed the facility!
Rosamia: They abandoned the test subjects without a second thought, to say nothing of the research data.
Vyrn: Hehe! Maybe the empire's made of nothing but cowards!
Vyrn: Still, destroying this research facility doesn't mean that's the end of it.
Vyrn: We've got a long way to go if we want to stop them from hurting more people.
Rosamia: Yes, but we have to press on. I won't quit until I put an end to their schemes!
Rosamia: I'm afraid I might cause you and your crew more harm in the future, (Captain).
Rosamia: But since you're so meddlesome and easy to predict, it probably wouldn't hurt to ask you for help.
Vyrn: Leave it to us! We'll stand up to the empire together! You'll see!
Vyrn: Isn't that right, (Captain)?
Lyria: We really want to see you smile again, Rosamia!
Lyria: Let's find a way for you to say goodbye to that awful mask!
(Captain) and company manage to destroy the imperial research facility and everything inside.
However, Rosamia's fate is still weighed down by the mask.
(Captain) and company will continue their journey until Rosamia is released from the chains of the mask.
The Wood Warrior's Wise Words
Rosamia brings (Captain) and the crew back to her hometown, hoping for a reunion with her family. But her family and childhood home are gone. Forest Ranger Walder's philosophy turns out to be what Rosamia needs to face the problems she has run from for so long.
Rosamia: ...
Rosamia is lost in a reverie that her mask does little to hide.
(Captain), Lyria, and Vyrn are discussing their concerns over Rosamia when Walder happens by.
Walder: Huh? What's with all the secrecy, guys? Something up?
Lyria: It's just... Rosamia hasn't been herself lately. It seems like she has something on her mind.
Walder: What? Rosamia's upset? How could I not notice! What kind of a friend am I?
Vyrn: Easy there, buddy. No need to take it personally.
(Great. Welder is exactly what this situation didn't need.)
Walder: Ah... How to solve this dilemma? I've had years living in the forest to cultivate my personal philosophy. Perhaps it's time to put it to good use...
Vyrn: W-wait up! Where do you think you're going, Walder?
Walder: I'm the man for the job! Walder the Forest Ranger cannot even spell the word "impossible"!
Rosamia: Sigh...
Walder: Hey, Rosamia! Mind a bit of company?
Rosamia: Huh? You need something?
Walder: Uh... No, but... This is the best spot on the ship to take in the view!
Rosamia: What's with you? It's the same scenery no matter where you stand.
Rosamia: (How strange... Why does he want to sit next to me all of a sudden?)
Rosamia: You're creeping me out, weirdo.
Walder: (Yeesh. As usual, her internal monologue isn't so internal.)
Walder: Um... I mean... Just look at that great big sky. Makes all your problems feel small and trivial, doesn't it?
Rosamia: What? Whatever you say, but if you don't need anything, I'm outta here.
Rosamia: (I wish it was that simple. Still, I guess I shouldn't just leave... )
Rosamia: I just don't want to cause anyone any trouble... This is something I need to handle myself, so I think I need to leave the crew...
Walder: (Dang it... She's clearly got some heavy stuff to deal with, so what do I say?)
Walder: (Ngh... I'm just gonna hafta take a page out of her book and be direct!)
Walder: Hold it right there, Rosamia! What do you mean, "handle yourself"?
Rosamia: Huh? H-how did you—
What are you, psychic?
Walder: That's right! Don't keep it all bottled up. Tell ol' Walder what's on your mind.
Rosamia: Grr... Walder... What manner of witchcraft are you using?
Walder: Dahahaha! The Great Walder is a master of the fantastic!
Rosamia: Gah... I suppose I can't hold it in any longer. I... I'll talk.
Vyrn: Wow... Whatever he said, it looks like it worked.
Lyria: Yeah! Let's go talk to her!
Expression grim, Rosamia lays her troubles before the crew.
Rosamia lost track of her family during her time as a test subject of the empire. She's been hoping to reunite with them ever since.
But since she betrayed the empire, she has no guarantee of her family's safety, and the fear of what she may discover has kept her from seeking them out.
Rosamia: Sigh... This is my problem, so now that I can control the mask, I'm going to leave the crew and head home.
Walder: Hang on, Rosamia. There's no need for you to leave! Is there, (Captain)?
- We'll come with you!
- Yeah, we can help!
Choose: We'll come with you!Rosamia: Thank you, (Captain)...
Rosamia: Seems like I'm racking up quite the tab with you.
Choose: Yeah, we can help!Rosamia: You're such a softie, Captain.
Rosamia: Haha. But I guess that's kind of what I like about you.
Continue 1Rosamia: Sorry for making you worry. All of you. To tell the truth, I was dragging my feet at the thought of going it alone...
Rosamia: So please... I want you guys to come with me.
Lyria: Hehe! Of course we will! You know how important you are to us, Rosamia.
Vyrn: All right! Sounds like we got ourselves a new course to set!
And so the Grandcypher changes course, heading for Rosamia's hometown.
A visibly anxious Rosamia guides the crew through town.
Walder: Don't worry. I'm sure your family's safe.
Rosamia: Thanks, Walder. We're almost there...
But the home where Rosamia and her family once lived is gone.
In its place is a scorched ruin. Rosamia falls to her knees, tears streaming down her face.
Rosamia: This can't be... They... My family... But why...
Walder: This is awful! Who would do such a thing!
Just then, a man approaches the group, his wide eyes locked on Rosamia.
???: That mask... You... Are you Rosamia?
Rosamia: Who... Who are you? Don't tell me you're from the empire...
Town Sentry: Nothing of the sort. I am but a sentry. I joined the guard not long after you left...
Town Sentry: I can only assume you're here to see your family. But I'm afraid they're no longer here...
Quietly, the man begins to speak of the tragedy that befell Rosamia's loved ones.
According to him, it happened some months after Rosamia was summoned by the empire.
In fear that their latest technology had been leaked, the empire sent troops to attack Rosamia's home.
Town Sentry: I wish we could have done more, but we were no match for the Empire. All we could do was allow your family to escape...
Rosamia: I see... So they got away safely. Thank you.
Walder: Those low-down, rotten imperial scumbuckets!
Rosamia: ...
Vyrn: H-hey! You okay, Rosamia?
Rosamia: I'll be fine. I need to stop running from reality, no matter how grim it is.
Rosamia: They'll pay. Once I find my family, I'll root out the ones responsible for hurting them.
Walder: All right! That's what I like to hear, Rosamia! Those imperial goons are gonna wish they never heard of us!
Rosamia: Hehe. Thanks for everything, Walder! And the rest of you, too!
Lyria: Any time! With all of us working together, I know we can do it!
Walder's pushiness can be useful sometimes. Rosamia is finally confronting her problems after running away for so long.
She is filled with fresh hope. Perhaps one day she will settle her score with the empire and finally be reunited with her family.
