Alchemist Astray - Opening

The Alchemist Guild of Helmuth has joined forces with the Erste Empire in a plot to seal away Cagliostro. The time has finally come to set their plan into motion.

Somewhere in an unknown facility, a large and mysterious shape looms quiescent. Before it a man stands beaming with elation.
???: It's finally complete.
Hearing footsteps, he turns around to find a man arrayed in armor.
???: So this is it.
???: Indeed.
With this, all that is the founder shall be ours.
???: No... When this is truly complete, all of truth and the realm of the gods themselves will be within our grasp.
???: The gods themselves...
You speak of fearsome things.
???: But you've never been one to spout falsehoods.
???: But of course.
And what of your operation?
???: I need not remind you that all will be for naught if your undertaking fails.
???: All is in place. The target has been secured and is en route to the facility as we speak.
???: The field-test area has also been prepared for gathering battle data.
???: Only luring the prey remains.
???: And preparations for that?
???: Arranged. We even have a watcher on them for good measure.
???: Most excellent.
I would have expected no less from an imperial officer of your caliber.
???: Heh. My lord is generous with his words.
???: Now let us begin. History awaits us.
???: We'll have our truth... and you'll have a new age of alchemy.
???: Yes. Begin we shall.
Long-sought aspirations have at last become manifest.
Their blade of greed is set, poised to strike the one whose name is known throughout all the skies—the founder of alchemy.

Alchemist Astray - Chapter 1: The Path to Truth - Episode 1

(Captain) and the crew have come to investigate rumors of a weapon made to bind Cagliostro. They are buffeted by imperial and alchemist forces the moment they arrive to investigate.

Imperial Soldier: We can't let them get close to the laboratory!
Alchemist: I know that already! We'll stop 'em here no matter what!
Alchemist: This is our chance! If we can bind the founder ourselves, we might even get a raise!
Cagliostro: Argh. Let's get this over with, (Captain).
Imperial Soldier: Gaaack!
Cagliostro's alchemy sends the soldier and alchemist flying.

Cagliostro: Pathetic. They couldn't even kill my boredom, much less me.
Cagliostro: From the number of goons crawling around here, I'd say the rumors are true.

Cagliostro: Oh, come on. It's like they're trying to bore me.
Cagliostro. Founder of the alchemical arts. Having transmuted her very own body numerous times, she has lived through millennia uncounted.
But after living wild and without restraint, she was caught in an incident that led to her imprisonment in the ruins of a remote land.
Only when (Captain) and company stumbled upon the ruins were her arcane binds broken and Cagliostro set free. Now she joins them on their journey.
Cagliostro: From the number of goons crawling around here, I'd say the rumors are true.
Continue 3
Vyrn: Yeah, not to mention the research facility they were talking about.
Alchemists have joined forces with the empire to create a weapon to once again seal away Cagliostro—or so the rumors say.
And now the crew has come to see just how true this is.
Vyrn: Gotta hand it to 'em though. They don't give up easy.
Cagliostro: That's just how badly the guild wants to put me away. Damnable Helmuth curs.
While being the founder of alchemy, Cagliostro is targeted by a group who call themselves the Alchemist Guild of Helmuth.
The guild had imprisoned Cagliostro once before and seeks to do so again.
Alchemist: I am but a humble member of the Alchemist Guild of Helmuth. Pleased to make your acquaintance.
Cagliostro: Humph... Just as I suspected.
Cagliostro: You'd think alchemists would show a bit more respect to the founder of the art, wouldn't you?
Lyria: Cagliostro... do you know this man?
Cagliostro: No, not this numbskull in particular. But it's fair to say that his guild and I share a... common bond.
Alchemist: Yes, bonds and all they entail... We alchemists seek to preserve the dignity of the art and will stop at nothing to do so.
Cagliostro: Hah! And you do that by binding people for hundreds of years? You and your disgusting group haven't changed at all!
Vyrn: Bind? Don't tell me...
Cagliostro: That's right. These arrogant maggots from the Alchemist Guild of Helmuth are the ones who bound me.
Alchemist: I'm truly sorry to do this so soon after you've been freed, but if you would only accept your fate...
Lyria: Wait! Are you planning on binding her again?
Alchemist: You've grown too wild, Cagliostro. We cannot allow your existence to sully our art.
Cagliostro: I'm almost insulted. Here I am, the creator of alchemy itself...
Cagliostro: And they think they can beat me by hurling handfuls of plebes my way. Hilarious.
Vyrn: But didn't they manage to bind you before?
Cagliostro: Hrm? Try and say that again, lizard. I dare you!
Vyrn: Eep!
Cagliostro: Teehee. It's okay, lil' guy! C'mere! Ouroboros just wants some nom-noms is all!
Lyria: Ha... haha...

Alchemist Astray - Chapter 1: The Path to Truth - Episode 2

A villager tells the crew of a research facility said to house a most ominous weapon. The crew heads toward the location.

(Captain) and company rest after having defeated a group of alchemists.
A villager approaches them and raises a shy voice.
Villager: U-um, excuse me.
Cagliostro: Teehee, hi there! Anything we can help you with?
Villager: I-I just wanted to thank you for saving us!
Villager: Ever since those thugs came here with their research facility, they've been nothing but trouble for our village!
Cagliostro: Oh? Do tell me more.
Villager: Y-yes, ma'am.
The villager tells (Captain) and company of the events that had transpired.
Cagliostro: So the empire and those sorry excuses for alchemists have joined forces to create a research facility...
Villager: Yes. But no one knows what goes on within those walls.
Villager: All we have is a drunken soldier's word that what they made would unveil the truth of the universe... or something like that.
Villager: If that's to be believed.
Cagliostro: I see. Well, that's not too far-fetched.
Cagliostro: The truth's as good as theirs if they manage to draw it out from me.
Lyria: Um, now that we know the rumor's true... what do we do from here?
  1. Let's check out that facility.
  2. We'll withdraw for now.

Choose: Let's check out that facility.
Cagliostro: Agreed. We find them, and we crush their little toy.
Cagliostro: Those fools could never hope to imprison me...

Choose: We'll withdraw for now.
Vyrn: Agreed. We need to make sure we're ready.
Lyria: All right.
Cagliostro: No. There's ample chance they'll escape while we waste time preparing.
Cagliostro: If we're to crush them, we do it fast and we do it now.
Vyrn: But they've probably got a whole army in there.
Cagliostro: Then an army's worth of heads will roll. And I can do that all on my own.
Cagliostro: Those fools could never hope to imprison me...
Continue 1
Cagliostro: But I won't leave even that to chance.
Lyria: Y-yeah! We wouldn't want you to be sealed away again!
Vyrn: Heh! True that!
Cagliostro: Good. Let's go then.
Cagliostro: They think they can bind me, do they?
Cagliostro: I'll show them just how wrong they are!

Alchemist Astray - Chapter 1: The Path to Truth - Episode 3

Arriving at the location, the crew finds nothing but an empty building. Upon searching the grounds, however, a mysterious white form appears and attacks them without warning.

Vyrn: So this is the place the villagers were talking about.
Lyria: There doesn't seem to be anyone around though.
Having heard of its location from the villager, (Captain) and company arrive at the research facility.
What stands before them, however, seems to be nothing but an empty shell of a building.
Cagliostro: Not a trace of research material in sight...
Cagliostro: Tsk. Seems we're too late.
  1. Let's see what we can find.
  2. I have a bad feeling about this.

Choose: Let's see what we can find.
Cagliostro: Agreed. From the looks of this, there's little doubt they might have left something behind.
Cagliostro: Don't leave a single rock unturned.

Choose: I have a bad feeling about this.
Lyria: Me too. Something about this place is giving me goose bumps.
Cagliostro: You're not the only one... But we're already here—let's not go back empty-handed.
Cagliostro: We'll give this place a quick look-over.
Continue 1
Cagliostro: But keep your guard up.
Lyria: A-all right.
Vyrn: Roger that!
Cagliostro: Hm? Did you hear that?
Cagliostro: Whoa! (Captain)! Behind you!
(Captain) turns around to find a white, humanoid form primed for attack.
The white form releases a beam of searing light toward (Captain).
Lyria: Nooo!
Cagliostro: Tsk!
Cagliostro intercepts the beam with a barrier just in time to protect (Captain).
The beam's heat, however, proves too strong as the barrier starts to crack and falter.
Cagliostro: ...!
The barrier finally gives way, its explosive force knocking Cagliostro and (Captain) to the ground.
Lyria: Cagliostro! (Captain)! Are you all right?
Cagliostro: ...
Lyria: Cagliostro!
Cagliostro: Hm? Ah. I'm fine. And you, (Captain)?
  1. I'm fine too. Thanks to you.
  2. Be careful. Don't push yourself too hard.

Choose: I'm fine too. Thanks to you.
Cagliostro: Good. As long as you're not hurt.
Cagliostro: But stay sharp. I don't think that thing wants to cuddle with—

Choose: Be careful. Don't push yourself too hard.
Cagliostro: Aww! Thanks a bunch for thinking about me, (Captain)!
Cagliostro: I could say the same to you though.
Cagliostro: You're the one who always goes overboard.
Vyrn: Yeah. Can't count how many tiny heart attacks I've gotten watching your heroics.
(Captain) lets out a wry smile.
Cagliostro: But stay sharp. I don't think that thing wants to cuddle with—

Cagliostro: ...!
Cagliostro staggers and seems on the verge of collapsing.
Vyrn: Y-you sure you're okay? You look like you can barely stand.
Cagliostro: I'm fine. Besides, we've got bigger worries right now. Let's take that thing down!

Alchemist Astray - Chapter 1: The Path to Truth - Episode 4

Cagliostro attempts to deal a finishing blow to the white form, but it escapes in a blinding flash of light. Unknown to the crew, a foreboding figure spies on them from afar.

Cagliostro: Say your prayers!
The humanoid shape crumbles to a white mass on the ground.
Cagliostro: Pant... Pant...
...!
Cagliostro: That thing was tougher than I thought.
In that instant the white form regenerates itself and rises again.
Vyrn: Wh-what? How's it still moving?
Cagliostro: Tsk. When I'm done with you, you won't even have any pieces to recover from!
Before anyone can react, however, a blinding flash of light bursts from the form.
Vyrn: ...!
Lyria: Ah! I-it's too bright!
Cagliostro: Tsk!
When the light fades, the white form is nowhere to be seen.
Vyrn: Wuh? It's gone.
Lyria: What was that? It... didn't seem quite like a monster.
Cagliostro: ...
Who knows.
Cagliostro: (How could I let that thing get away. And this strange sensation... It can't be...)
Unbeknownst to the bewildered (Captain) and company, two figures observe the facility from a distance.
???: Hm.
???: How went the field test?
???: Superbly, my lord.
???: I see.
???: And I must say the subjects responded marvelously to the information we fed them.
???: Of course. The founder could never ignore a rumor like that.
???: But do you not wish to inform the imperial soldiers or the others, my lord?
???: There were many who died fighting the—
???: Pay it no mind. Such sacrifices are of little consequence.
???: Proceed to the next phase at once.
???: As my lord commands!
???: The time is nigh. Soon the founder shall be ours.
With deep longing and voracity in his eyes, the words slip from the man's widening grin.

Alchemist Astray - Chapter 2: The Call for Help - Episode 1

Cagliostro has sustained serious injuries from battle with the white form. More than mere flesh wounds, the injuries cannot be easily healed, and she is forced to remain in her weakened state for the time being.

(Captain) and company have survived the mysterious form's attacks.
However, concern for Cagliostro's injuries causes the group to cut short the search of the grounds, opting to return to the Grandcypher.
Cagliostro: Tsk! I knew that wouldn't work. Then that means...
Cagliostro: Ouroboros!
Cagliostro: Can't summon Ouroboros either. I'd estimate my capacity is at thirty percent.
Cagliostro: Even if I attempt to transmute a new body for myself, there's no guarantee it would go smoothly.
Cagliostro: But waiting for my body to recover is out of the question; that would take too much time.
Cagliostro: A quandary if there ever was one.
Lyria: Um. Wh-what's happened, Cagliostro?
Lyria: You've seemed troubled ever since we were attacked by that white figure.
Lyria: And you don't look well at all.
Vyrn: Y-yeah. I'm kinda worried too.
Vyrn: If you can't summon Ouroboros, it must be pretty serious.
Cagliostro: Nothing I can't handle. That white form just damaged me a little.
  1. You okay?
  2. Anything we can do to help?

Choose: You okay?
Cagliostro: Aww! You're such a sweetie-pie, (Captain)! Thankies!
Cagliostro: Can't honestly say I'm fine though...
Vyrn: You usually heal right up when you're hurt, dontcha?

Choose: Anything we can do to help?
Cagliostro: Oh! That's so sweet of you, (Captain)! Actually, there is one thing!
Cagliostro: See, walking gives me the ouchies right now, so I was thinking...
Cagliostro: Do you think you could... carry me? Pretty please?
Vyrn: Wait a sec. You've been walking fine up until now.
Cagliostro: Why you little...
You'd better learn to use that tongue before I take it from you, lizard.
Vyrn: Eep! A-a-anyway, you usually heal right up when you're hurt, dontcha?
Continue 1
Vyrn: Why aren't you doing that this time?
Cagliostro: If I could do that, I wouldn't be racking my brain right now, would I?
Cagliostro: That white form's attack affects physical substances in such a way that—ah, you wouldn't understand.
Cagliostro: Simply put, the attack is extremely effective against my body, or any alchemized material for that matter.
Cagliostro: That's what's slowing down my recovery.
Lyria: Oh no... Then that means...
Cagliostro: I'm weak... very weak.
Cagliostro lets out a deep, heavy sigh.
From the look of terrible dismay on Cagliostro's face, (Captain) realizes just how grave the situation is.

Alchemist Astray - Chapter 2: The Call for Help - Episode 2

The crew receives a cry for help from Deliford, an ex-crewmate. They rush to his aid.

Lyria: Excuse me, (Captain). May I come in? There's a letter for—
Cagliostro: Gimme more, (Captain)! Aaa—
With an awkward smile, (Captain) feeds Cagliostro another spoon of soup.
Lyria: Am I... interrupting something?
Vyrn: What're you doing?
Cagliostro: Have you no eyes, lizard? It's called spoon-feeding.
Vyrn: No, I mean, why's (Captain) spoon-feeding you?
Cagliostro: Because I'm wounded and fragile and require intensive care of course.
Though several days have passed since the research facility incident, Cagliostro's body still shows no signs of recovery.
Cagliostro: (Captain), (Captain)!
Cagliostro: Can you spoil me just an eensy-weensy little-bitty more? Pretty please?
  1. Of course.
  2. All right. Say aah.

Choose: Of course.
Cagliostro: Thankie-wankies, sweetiekins! You're the bestest ever!
Cagliostro: Ahh, it should be a crime to be this adorable.

Choose: All right. Say aah.
Cagliostro: Aaah! Nom!
Cagliostro: ...
Hrm, maybe that wasn't cute enough for you.
Cagliostro: I wanted to see you flustered. Meh, I'll get you next time.
Continue 1
Vyrn: Sigh... Up to your old antics, even on your sickbed.
Lyria: Ha... hahaha...
Cagliostro: So? What's the letter?
Lyria: Oh! Y-yes, it's from Deliford!

Lyria: The letter says he needs our help.
Lyria hands the letter to (Captain).
It reads:
"(Captain), you and your crew are the only ones I can turn to."
"Please, help my family and me."
Cagliostro: Ah, this is from that man who pulled out of the crew. Seems going back to his family wasn't quite the happy ending he had hoped for.
Vyrn: What? You wanna leave the crew?
Lyria: But why?
Lyria: I thought you said you wanted to go with us to Estalucia no matter what!
Lyria: You promised yourself!
Deliford: I still believe that. But I've gotten word from my family asking for my return.
Deliford: It seems my parents' health is deteriorating. They want me to return to see them.
Lyria: Your family... I see.
Vyrn: Oh. Well, if that's the case... We understand.
Deliford: My deepest apologies.
Deliford: I shall be with you in spirit.
Deliford: I'm truly sorry. But to abandon my family while chasing a dream is something I cannot do.
Deliford: I only ask that you tell me all about Estalucia once you've reached it.
Lyria: We'll tell you all about it! Promise!
Vyrn: You can bet on it!
Deliford: Thank you. I'll be going then.
Vyrn: Take care, old man. Say hi to your family for us too.
Deliford: I'm not old! I'm still...
Deliford: Ha... hahaha!
Vyrn: Huh?
Deliford: Ahh, it's nothing. It's such a shame we can't have these exchanges anymore.
Vyrn: Yeah...
Deliford: (Captain), traveling with you and your crew has been like a dream come true for me. This has been one of the most enjoyable times of my life.
Deliford: Thank you... from the bottom of my heart.
Lyria: Sniffle... Thank you, Deliford. We'll miss you.
Vyrn: ...
See you around, old m—I mean Deliford.
Deliford: Until we meet again.
Cagliostro: So what do we do? Better not be what I think you're thinking.
  1. We're going to help him, of course.
  2. Just so happens we have a mission there!

Choose: We're going to help him, of course.
Lyria: That's right! We have to help!
Vyrn: Yeah! We're still friends no matter what!
Cagliostro: Tsk... Fine. If that's your choice, I'll go with you.

Choose: Just so happens we have a mission there!
Lyria: A-a mission?
Vyrn: Oh? Oh! Y-yeaaah, that mission!
Vyrn: Then we can check in on Deliford on the way!
Vyrn: If he's in trouble, maybe we could lend a hand.
Lyria: Th-that's right! We're only helping him on the side!
Cagliostro: Terrible liars—all of you.
Cagliostro: Tsk... Fine. If that's your choice, I'll go with you.

Lyria: Cagliostro!
Cagliostro: I don't have to like it though. Given my condition, I'd prefer to avoid messy business, not dive right into it.
Cagliostro: (Bah. Look at me. I've gotten all soft!)
Cagliostro shrugs as she admits the fact and gives a wry smile.
With that they begin their journey to the location given in Deliford's letter.

Alchemist Astray - Chapter 2: The Call for Help - Episode 3

(Captain) and the crew arrive at the location stated in Deliford's letter. To their surprise they find Deliford chained to a chair before being ambushed by a swarm of alchemists and imperial soldiers.

Vyrn: Sure this is the place?
Lyria: Wow.
(Captain) and company arrive at the location specified in Deliford's letter.
Lyria: This is the address... right?
Vyrn: If it is... the old fogy sure knows how to live it.
The group is awestruck at the grand estate before them.
Vyrn: He did mention he was a pretty big-league lancer in the old days.
Cagliostro: Him? I find that hard to believe.
Cagliostro: Enough standing around. Let's get in.
They knock on the mansion's door, but to no avail.
Vyrn: Oh, come on. Don't tell me no one's home.
Lyria: Maybe he went out to town for a bit?
Cagliostro: A manor as large as this with not a single soul in it...
Cagliostro: On your toes, (Captain). Something's off here.
The group creaks open the door and steps timidly into the residence.
Lyria: H-hello? Anyone home?
Vyrn: Hey! Deliford! We're here! Where are you?
Deliford: Those voices... Vyrn! Lyria! Is that you?
The group hears Deliford's distant voice coming from one of the rooms.
Vyrn: Sounds like this is the room. Deliford, we're coming in.
Beyond the door they find an expansive yet empty ballroom.
In the center of that room, Deliford sits chain-bound to a luxurious chair.
Deliford: (Captain)! You're here! So it's as I feared...
Vyrn: What the! Why're you all chained up?
Deliford: It's a... long story. But that's not important—you shouldn't be here!
Cagliostro: And why's that?
Cagliostro: We're here because of your letter. You asked for help, and we came.
Deliford: Letter? What letter? I did no such thing!
Lyria: Imperials! A-and alchemists too.
Deliford: I knew it. This was their plan all along.
Vyrn: Huh? What's going on? Somebody tell me something!
Deliford: I can't say for sure, but I believe—
Cagliostro: Humph. Those fools never change. Save the talk for later. We get rid of this filth first.

Alchemist Astray - Chapter 2: The Call for Help - Episode 4

Zechs, commanding officer of the ambushing force, orders Deliford to stand down or be expelled from the army. Shocked to learn Deliford has rejoined the empire, the crew listens to Deliford as he explains his circumstances.

(Captain) and company take down wave after wave of attackers.
Cagliostro: Come now, are you really trying to capture me?
Cagliostro: You can't even get within an inch of me!
Alchemist: Ngh! How could this happen...
Cagliostro: Yet again your guild underestimates me.
Cagliostro: Behold the power of the founder of alchemy—the greatest, most adorable alchemist of all time!
(Captain) and company cast a sideways glance at Cagliostro as they unbind Deliford.
Deliford: R-remind me never to anger Cagliostro.
  1. Glad you're safe.
  2. Your armor...

Choose: Glad you're safe.
Deliford: You came for me even though I've left your crew.
Deliford: Thank you, (Captain). Your kindness knows no bounds.

Choose: Your armor...
Deliford: Well, um... it's a rather long story as I mentioned.
Deliford: I've not betrayed you though, (Captain). Please, you have to believe me...

Deliford: But now's not the time for idle talk. Right now you need to take Cagliostro and go!
Lyria: What? Wh-why?
Lyria: But we came here to help you.
Vyrn: Yeah! What the heck's going on?
Vyrn: And why're there soldiers and alchemists here?
Deliford: I can explain later! For now just—
???: Deliford! You're not thinking of disobeying orders again, are you?
Deliford: Zechs!
Zechs: Sigh. This is exactly why you were discharged before.
Behind the man called Zechs, a horde of imperial soldiers and alchemists flood into the room.
Vyrn: Oh man. This is bad—real bad.
Lyria: Wh-what do we do?
Zechs: You're being a disgrace to the army, Deliford.
Zechs: Cease this mutiny or I'll be forced to decommission you myself.
Deliford: Ngh!
Zechs: You need the money, don't you?
Deliford: Mng...
Zechs: Didn't you say your family was happy you rejoined the army?
Zechs: Think about this, Deliford.
Vyrn: Wait. You joined the army again?
Deliford: I-it's true... I work for the empire now.
Deliford: I needed the money... the job security...
Lyria: Deliford...
Deliford: I-I had no choice! My family's in financial trouble... I had to.
Deliford: I'm sorry.
Lyria: N-no! You shouldn't have to apologize! In fact it's great that you're working to support your family!
Vyrn: Yeah!
Deliford: Thank you—all of you.
With teary eyes, Deliford gives a deep bow to the crew.

Alchemist Astray - Chapter 3: The Gate of Helmuth - Episode 1

The alchemist Paracelsus reveals that the letter was simply a ruse to lure Cagliostro into his trap. He and Zechs order Deliford to seize the crew, but Deliford refuses to betray his friends.

(Captain) and company are trapped by the horde of soldiers and alchemists.
Cagliostro: I see your situation, Deliford. But why'd you ask the others to take me and escape?
Cagliostro: You dare suggest that the Cagliostro should run away with her tail between her legs?
Deliford: I don't know the details. All I know is that you were to be lured here and captured.
Deliford: Zechs told me of the plot. When I refused to cooperate, they held me against my will.
Zechs: Correct. You played an essential role in Paracelsus's plan.
???: I conferred with Zechs on how to lure you out.
???: He suggested a plan using that man as bait, and I merely agreed.
Cagliostro: Hm? And you are?
???: Pardon my late introduction, founder.
Paracelsus: I am Paracelsus. He who shall have power to surpass even the founder of alchemy—the great Cagliostro.
Cagliostro: Surpass me? Ha! Trying to kill me with laughter now, are you?
Paracelsus: Humph. Don't start laughing too soon. I've yet to get to the punch line.
Paracelsus: Zechs. It's time.
Zechs: All right.
Deliford, seize the founder and her convoy at once. That's an order.
Deliford: What! B-but I—
Zechs: Deliford. This is your last warning. Do as I say or face the consequences.
Zechs: Be wise, Deliford. We took you in when you had nowhere to go.
Zechs: At your age you would be hard pressed to find any other means of earning your bread.
Deliford: ...
That's true... And if I think about my future... my family...
Zechs: That's right. Now you know what to do.
Deliford: ...
Vyrn: Wait, you can't seriously be thinking about this!
Lyria: D-Deliford? No, y-you wouldn't...
Cagliostro: ...
  1. I trust my friends no matter what.
  2. Look him straight in the eye.

Choose: I trust my friends no matter what.
Deliford: (Captain)... You still believe in me even after I abandoned your crew.
Deliford: I... I...

Choose: Look him straight in the eye.
Deliford: D-don't! Don't look at me with those eyes!
Deliford: I...

Deliford: Zechs. I'm sorry, but I can't do as you say!
Zechs: ...
What?
Deliford: These are my comrades! I'll not sell them for profit!
Zechs: Think about your family.
Deliford: There's nothing more important to me... But (Captain) and the crew are my family too!
Deliford: And above all I joined the imperial army to protect the innocent!
Deliford: Not betray others for selfish gains!
Deliford: My wife, my crew, and my family... I shall protect them all! I'll give my life if I have to!
Vyrn: Deliford!
Lyria: Deliford!
Cagliostro: Oh? Finally quit your wavering, I see.
Cagliostro: A naive choice, but I like it. You might be growing on me.
Zechs: What a pity. We'll just have to capture you as well then.
Deliford: (Captain)! We parted ways before, but we're going to get out of here together!

Alchemist Astray - Chapter 3: The Gate of Helmuth - Episode 2

Deliford, (Captain), and company are driven into a corner by the sheer number of their foes. At that very moment, Clarisse arrives to save them. But their joy is short-lived, as Clarisse attacks them the moment their backs are turned.

(Captain) and company take down wave after wave of enemies.
Their foes' numbers, however, prove too great, and the crew is slowly driven into a corner.
Cagliostro: Tsk! It's like a never-ending stream of scum.
Deliford: We have to make it through this!
Paracelsus: You live up to the legends, founder.
Paracelsus: And your friends seem to be plodding along just as well. I doubt any of you will last much longer though.
Deliford: Pant... Pant... They're trying to whittle us down with sheer numbers.
Lyria: What do we do, (Captain)? We're not going to make it at this rate.
Cagliostro: Tsk. Looks like I'll have to—
Vyrn: Wh-what was that?
Zechs: By the fates! I-it's...
???: You guys okay?
Lyria: C-Clarisse?
Vyrn: What're you doing here?
Vyrn: I thought you went home to see your parents.
Cagliostro: ...

Lyria: Oh, you want to go back home?
Clarisse: Mm, yeah. I need to have a heart-to-heart talk with my parents.
Clarisse: I mean, you guys know my family's bent on hunting down Cagliostro, right?
Clarisse: And they want me to do that too, but... I kinda went full-on rebellious teen in my last letter.
Clarisse: Now they're asking me to come home for a bit...
Clarisse: This is good though. I can finally sit down with them and talk it all out.
Clarisse: Hope you can understand. I'll have to take some time off from the crew. Just for a bit.
Vyrn: It's cool. We understand. Hope things go over well with your parents!
Clarisse: Thanks! Hope I can make them understand how I feel!
Lyria: C-Clarisse!
Clarisse: Hm? What's up?
Lyria: Um, never mind. It's nothing.
Clarisse: Don't worry—I'll be back! Count on it!
Clarisse: The crew's my real home now!
Lyria: We'll be waiting!
Clarisse: I'll fill you in later! Right now you need to come with me!
Vyrn: Gotcha!
Lyria: C-coming!
(Captain) and company follow Clarisse's lead.
Cagliostro: ...
Vyrn: C'mon, Cagliostro! What're you staring at?
Cagliostro: ...
It's nothing.
Alchemist 1: Don't let the founder get away!
Zechs: Humph.
Paracelsus: Zechs. I shall pursue them myself. You know what to do.
Zechs: Understood.
Lyria: Clarisse!
Vyrn: Clarisse!
Clarisse: I'm glad you guys are safe.
Alchemist 2: Don't let them escape! Get the girl too!
Clarisse: Guys, you go on without me. I'll hold them off.
  1. I'll help you.
  2. We can't just leave you here.

Choose: I'll help you.
Clarisse: Don't worry about me. I'll be fine.
Clarisse: It's better if I'm alone anyway—I won't have to worry about getting you caught in the blast.

Choose: We can't just leave you here.
Clarisse: Don't worry—I can handle it!
Clarisse: And trust me, you do not want to be around when I go boom on them.
Continue 4
Vyrn: You got a point there. Okay, be careful, Clarisse!
Deliford: Then allow me to take the front line! (Captain) can cover us from the rear.
Cagliostro: No, I'll handle the flank. I can take whatever they throw at me.
Lyria: Are you sure? But in your condition...
Cagliostro: No, it's better this way. Trust me.
Deliford: Very well. Cagliostro will take the rear.
Deliford: (Captain) and I shall open a path!
(Captain) nods in assent.
Vyrn: Deliford, (Captain)! We're counting on ya! You too, Clarisse!
Lyria: Be careful, Clarisse!
Clarisse: Thanks, guys!
Cagliostro: ...
Lyria: Pant... Pant...
Vyrn: Lyria, you holding up?
Lyria: I-I'm fine. I just—
Lyria suddenly finds herself in (Captain)'s protective embrace.
Lyria: Huh? Wha? What's going on?
Cagliostro: Tsk!
Lyria: C-Cagliostro?
Cagliostro moves in alongside (Captain), transmuting a protective barrier in an instant.
Lyria: Aah!
Vyrn: Lyria! You okay?
Lyria: Y-yes! Thanks to (Captain) and Cagliostro.
Lyria: Thank you, both of you.
Lyria: Huh? What's wrong, you two?
Cagliostro's and (Captain)'s faces twist into a scowl, their eyes focused on the source of the attack on their group's flank.
Cagliostro: ...
I didn't want to believe it.
Lyria: What do you... Oh no.
Vyrn: What the!
Deliford: This can't be!
Clarisse: ...
There standing ready to strike again is the attacker—Clarisse.

Alchemist Astray - Chapter 3: The Gate of Helmuth - Episode 3

(Captain) and company are aghast at Clarisse's betrayal. As she readies her next attack, Paracelsus drives home the point that Clarisse is now on his side.

Vyrn: You can't be serious!
Lyria: C-Clarisse?
Clarisse: ...
  1. There's no doubt about it.
  2. How... Why?

Choose: There's no doubt about it.
Lyria: Th-that can't be true! This is Clarisse—our Clarisse!
Lyria: She'd never try to hurt us!
Cagliostro: Face the facts. If I hadn't deflected her attack, you'd be a pile of dust right now.

Choose: How... Why?
Cagliostro: Get ahold of yourself, (Captain)!
Vyrn: You can't ask us to swallow this and just stay calm!
Cagliostro: I know. But we need to stay sharp.

Lyria: I can't believe this! I won't!
(Captain) and company are utterly shaken by the turn of events.
Paracelsus: An impressive defense. Had you realized Clarisse was a traitor, perchance?
Cagliostro: Maybe. Maybe not.
Paracelsus: Humph. As you wish. It matters not.
Lyria: Clarisse! Why... Why would you do something like this?
Clarisse: ...
Paracelsus: Dear Clarisse here was given a choice to side with you or the Guild of Helmuth.
Paracelsus: She chose us.
Lyria: B-but she said she'd talk with her parents...
Paracelsus: And this is the result of that discussion.
(Captain) and company are taken aback by Paracelsus's words.
Paracelsus: Now then, Clarisse. Seize the founder as you promised.
Clarisse: Yeah, I will. I keep my promises.
Lyria: She's... really going to do this.
Vyrn: Please tell me this is all just a bad joke.
Clarisse: It's no joke. My duty is to defeat the founder, and that's what I'm gonna do.
Lyria: C-Clarisse.
Cagliostro: Fine. Tell you what.
Cagliostro: We'll settle this with a duel—you and me.
Paracelsus: Sacrificing yourself to protect your comrades? By the fates, founder, one might think you've grown a heart.
Cagliostro: Shut it, knave. You're next.
Paracelsus: You expect victory in your condition? Given your weakness to Clarisse's alchemy, I find that doubtful.
Cagliostro: ...
Paracelsus: Oh, you think I didn't know?
Paracelsus: About the fact that the linchpin to your previous binding was an ancestor of Clarisse's?
Cagliostro: I see you're still ignorant of the depth of my abilities. Not that I'd expect an amateur like you to understand.
Paracelsus: ...
Cagliostro: First law of alchemy, newbie: no one messes with Cagliostro!

Alchemist Astray - Chapter 3: The Gate of Helmuth - Episode 4

What was thought to be Clarisse turns out to be the mysterious white form in disguise. Known as the Gate of Helmuth, it is revealed to be a philosopher's stone with alchemic abilities especially effective against Cagliostro.

Cagliostro: You'll regret that!
Clarisse: ...!
Deliford: Cagliostro, stop! This is going too far!
Cagliostro: Don't worry. I'll be sure it doesn't kill... Hm?
Clarisse: Aaah!
Lyria: Ah!
Vyrn: Wh-what?
Taking the brunt of Cagliostro's alchemic attack, Clarisse lets out a shrill cry.
Blinding light suddenly flares out from her body.
???: ...
Vyrn: What the! Sh-she looks like—
Lyria: Like that figure from the research facility! B-but then that means...
Cagliostro: It all makes sense now.
Cagliostro: You made that thing take on Clarisse's form.
Paracelsus: Yes. Precisely.
Cagliostro: Tsk. Fooled by the oldest trick in the tome.
Cagliostro: Just goes to show that the shock of it all got the better of me.
Cagliostro: But this is good. If that's not Clarisse, I won't have to hold back any—
Cagliostro: Ngh!
Lyria: Cagliostro!
Vyrn: Wh-what's wrong? Are you okay?
Cagliostro: Can't... move...
Paracelsus: Remarkable... How easily you've allowed it to evolve from albedo to nigredo.
Paracelsus: Your power truly is tremendous.
Cagliostro: Albedo... nigredo... So that thing's a philosopher's stone.
Cagliostro: That explains what's happening to me.
Cagliostro: This is the weapon that was made to capture me.
Cagliostro: But to make a weapon entirely out of a philosopher's stone... You're sick, Paracelsus.
Paracelsus: Humph. Ahh, the founder's vaunted brilliance. Sharp as ever, I see.
Paracelsus: This weapon, my creation, shall surpass even you, founder. Behold, the Gate of Helmuth!
Paracelsus: No. Given its current state, perhaps Nigredo would be a more fitting name.
Vyrn: H-hey, what's a philosopher's stone?
Cagliostro: The sole substance that can ignore the alchemical law of equivalent exchange.
Cagliostro: The stone is also able to manipulate and reconstruct any material in any way its keeper desires.
Lyria: U-um...
Deliford: My apologies. I understood none of that.
Vyrn: Ditto.
Cagliostro: Hmm, if I were to put it in simpler terms...
Cagliostro: It's a magical stone that, given the proper conditions, can grant any wish one desires.
Lyria: A-any wish?
Cagliostro: Any.
Vyrn: What! So it's basically invincible!
Cagliostro: Don't worry. That thing is still in nigredo, its dark phase. It's far from being a full-fledged philosopher's stone yet.
Cagliostro: The completion process is anything but easy.
Cagliostro: It starts in its light stage, albedo. Then comes nigredo, veriditas, citrinitas, and finally rubedo. Only then is it a true philosopher's stone.
Cagliostro: That thing over there isn't granting wishes just yet.
Paracelsus: An accurate summation. However, the dark phase is already having quite an effect on you, is it not?
Cagliostro: ...
Paracelsus: And I can see your friends are starting to feel it too.
Lyria: Ah...
Deliford: Ngh...
Vyrn: Man, I'm feeling kinda weak...
Cagliostro: That's the dark phase taking its effect.
Cagliostro: In this stage the stone causes both itself and all nearby substances to decay and degrade.
Cagliostro: The very elements of our bodies are slowly being disintegrated.
Cagliostro: We feel it as a loss of stamina.
Lyria: So if this continues...
Cagliostro: We can forget about moving ever again.
Vyrn: This is bad!
Cagliostro: It is.
Cagliostro: My alchemized body is especially susceptible to the decay.
Cagliostro: Whatever you're feeling now, I'm getting that several times over.
Vyrn: Holy cow!
Lyria: B-but if it affects everything around, why isn't Paracelsus getting weaker?
Paracelsus: I'm not a fool. Do you think I'd let myself be affected by my own weapon?
Lyria: B-but...
Paracelsus: Humph. I see you finally understand...
Paracelsus: You never had a chance from the start.
Cagliostro: So you're going to use that thing to seal me away again?
Paracelsus: Seal you away? Oh no, far from it.
Paracelsus: Nigredo will absorb your knowledge, skills, body—all that you are...
Paracelsus: And then proceed to be reborn as a new existence to serve us!
Cagliostro: ...!
Paracelsus: A philosopher's stone with the knowledge and abilities of the very creator of alchemy.
Paracelsus: No desire would be out of our reach. An ultimate weapon for us to wield. No... a god!
Paracelsus: And we shall breach the inner sanctum of truth itself and acquire the entirety of all knowledge.
Cagliostro: I'm almost flattered you think of me that way.
Cagliostro: But that ain't happening.
Paracelsus: Impressive. You can still stand.
Cagliostro: Heh. Who do you think I am?
Cagliostro: The greatest, cutest alchemist in history isn't going to be bested by the likes of you!
Cagliostro: (Captain), Deliford! Let's go!

Alchemist Astray - Chapter 4: The Promise of Hope - Episode 1

(Captain) and company falter under the effects of the Gate of Helmuth—now known as Nigredo after reaching a new phase in its evolution. When Cagliostro collapses and their doom seems imminent, the real Clarisse comes to save them.

Nigredo crumbles under the ferocity of (Captain) and company's attacks.
Vyrn: We did it!
Paracelsus: Hah. How futile.
Nigredo rises again, giving credence to Paracelsus's words.
Vyrn: What!
Paracelsus: You could wait for Nigredo to slowly decompose from its own decay...
Paracelsus: Or you could defeat it right now by destroying all the matter from which it is made.
Paracelsus: It goes without saying that such a feat can only be accomplished with alchemy.
Paracelsus: But the founder, the only one with the power to defeat Nigredo, is too weak to even attempt it.
Paracelsus: And waiting for Nigredo to completely degrade itself would take far too long.
Paracelsus: How do you plan to defeat my creation this time, O great founder?
Cagliostro: By doing whatever it takes. Ever since I was born, it's been bind after bind. I'm used to getting out of tight spots.
Cagliostro: I didn't get this far by giving up easy. And I'm certainly not going to start with the likes of you.
Despite her bold claim, Cagliostro struggles to keep standing.
Lyria: Cagliostro!
Vyrn: Hey! Hang in there!
Paracelsus: And so the founder finally falls. The time has come, Nigredo; go to the founder and—
Imperial Soldier: Aaah!
Alchemist: No! This awful alchemy! It's her!
Zechs: ...!
Sounds of explosions precede tremors that shake the building.
Paracelsus: What is the meaning of this?
???: Hey, guys! It's kapowin' time!
A voice can be heard echoing as a string of explosions erupts within the room.
Nigredo is thrown afar by the force of the blast.
Paracelsus: What?
???: Cavalry's here, people!
Lyria: Huh...
Vyrn: Wuh?
Clarisse: It's your friendly neighborhood alchemist—Clarisse!
Clarisse: Yeah!

Alchemist Astray - Chapter 4: The Promise of Hope - Episode 2

With Clarisse's help, (Captain) and the crew escape the grasp of Nigredo and Paracelsus.

Having swept Nigredo away with a blast, Clarisse joins with (Captain) and company.
Clarisse: Fear not, folks. Clarisse is here to save the day!
Lyria: ...
Vyrn: ...
Clarisse: Wh-what's up? You don't like my entrance?
Vyrn: Psst, Lyria. You think this one's real?
Lyria: I-I don't know, Vyrn. The last one seemed so authentic.
Clarisse: Aww, c'mon! That fake isn't like me at all! I'm nowhere near that docile!
Clarisse: Plus I'm way prettier, dontcha think?
Clarisse: Look, look!
Clarisse spins a full circle.
Vyrn: Prettier? More like pretty much the same.
Deliford: I believe the imposter was also just as... rambunctious.
Clarisse: Aww, really? Well, I sure don't see the resemblance!
Lyria: Hm? Um, Clarisse?
Clarisse: Yeah? What's up, Lyria?
Lyria: Your clothes... they're all dusty and dirty. What happened?
Clarisse: Oh, this? I've been holed up in their research facility till just now.
Clarisse: They had tons of guards there, was impossible to sneak out, so I just blew the whole thing up! Kapow!
Vyrn: W-wait, you just blew it up? Everything?
Clarisse: Yeps! All of it! Now it's the perfect landing pad! Heh heh.
Vyrn: ...
Deliford: ...
Paracelsus: A-all my research...
Clarisse: If you kept those at the building then, uhh... sorry you didn't get to say goodbye?
Paracelsus: ...
Cagliostro: Heh heh heh. Well, that proves it—this one's the original.
Cagliostro: The only alchemist I know with the strategic prowess of a goldfish.
Lyria: Cagliostro! You're awake!
Cagliostro: Yeah, you guys weren't exactly keeping it quiet here.
Clarisse: ...
Hmm. Why do I feel like that wasn't a compliment?
Clarisse: Oh, well! Anywho, we need to get outta here! Pronto!
Clarisse: Cagliostro doesn't look like she can hold up much longer.
Lyria: We would if we could... but how?
Vyrn: Yeah, they're not gonna just high-five us as we stroll outta here.
Clarisse: Got it covered!
An explosion bursts from a nearby wall.
Clarisse: And the final touch!
With another blow, a large part of the wall comes crumbling down, leaving a gaping hole in its wake.
Lyria: ...
Vyrn: ...
Clarisse: There's our exit!
Clarisse: Wh-why're you guys looking at me like that?
Vyrn: I-it's nothing.
Yeah, this is the real Clarisse. For sure.
Lyria: Ha... haha.
Clarisse: Uhh, okay! C'mon, let's go!
Cagliostro: Tsk. Unfortunately I can't so much as move right now. Someone needs to carry me.
  1. I'll do it.
  2. Deliford, you're up.

Choose: I'll do it.
(Captain) reaches around Cagliostro's back and under her knees, scooping her up in a bridal carry.
Cagliostro: Wha—hey! You're not going to piggyback me?
Lyria: Oh my! This is how the princes carry the princesses in stage plays!
Clarisse: Oh, oh! I wanna be a princess too! Me next, (Captain)!
Lyria: Ah! Me too!
Deliford: Now's not the time for this! We need to move!
Lyria: Oh! That's right!
Clarisse: Aww... But I wanted to be a princess.
Cagliostro: ...
Vyrn: Cagliostro? Are you blushing?
Cagliostro: Silence, lizard.
Cagliostro: Ahem.
Aww, (Captain)!
Cagliostro: You're making me plushie-blushie my little face off!
Cagliostro: You feisty little honey-biscuit!
Cagliostro: But if you dare drop me, I swear I'll feed you to Ouroboros.

Choose: Deliford, you're up.
Deliford: Understood.
Deliford slings Cagliostro over his shoulder.
Cagliostro: Hey, a little delicacy would be appreciated!
Vyrn: Now ain't the time! We need to hustle!
Cagliostro: Aww! But a fragile little rosebud like me needs to be handled with care!

Paracelsus: Clarisse... There will be consequences to this.
Clarisse: I know that much.
Clarisse: But with (Captain) around, everything will be all right in the end. I just know it.
Clarisse: Not to mention we have the founder of alchemy with us too!
Clarisse: Okay, gang! Full speed ahead!
With a nod, (Captain) and company escape through Clarisse's freshly made exit.

Alchemist Astray - Chapter 4: The Promise of Hope - Episode 3

Carrying a benumbed Cagliostro, the group dashes to the mansion's exit. Alchemists and imperial forces try to stop them, but Clarisse makes quick work of them.

(Captain) and company make their way to the building's exit.
Alchemist 1: You shall not escape!
For the Guild of Helmuth!
Imperial Soldier 1: Show them the might of the imperial army, men! For the empire!
However, droves of minions soon attempt to stop the group.
Clarisse: Perfect timing! I really need to let off some steam!
With a great blast, Clarisse sends the assailants soaring through the air.
Alchemist 1: Gaaah!
Clarisse: One for you!
Imperial Soldier 1: How could this possibly—
Clarisse: And one for you!
Imperial Soldier 2: Bfaaagh!
Vyrn: Hey, hey! Ease up a little!
Lyria: Vyrn's right, Clarisse! The mansion might collapse at this rate!
Clarisse: Ahh. I guess I just really want to get back at them for taking me prisoner.
Clarisse: Just thinking about it makes me wanna kapow them to—
Lyria: No! No more explosions! Not here!
Vyrn: Yeah, remember what happened the last time you went all out!
Clarisse: Aww...
Alchemist 2: Ngh! You shall not esca—
Clarisse: Oh, give it a rest!
Alchemist 2: Gwaaah!
Imperial Soldier 3: M-Mommy!
Clarisse: Thaaat's it! Keep 'em coming! Free kapows for everyone!
Vyrn: I said no more kapowing!
Clarisse: Aww... Sorry.

Alchemist Astray - Chapter 4: The Promise of Hope - Episode 4

Clarisse asks the crew to help save her captive parents. They agree, and Deliford leads them to where her parents are being held.

Vyrn: I think we're in the clear. We should've lost them by now.
Deliford: Pant... Wheeze... I believe so.
Having evaded their pursuers, (Captain) and company have made their way to a nearby forest.
Vyrn: But boy are we glad you came when you did, Clarisse! A second later and we would've been goners.
Clarisse: Don't mention it! Looks to me like the situation's pretty serious though.
Vyrn: Tell me about it. But how did you get caught by those guys anyway?
Vyrn: Aren't you supposed to be back at your hometown?
Clarisse: I did go back. But that no-good alchemist was waiting for me when I got home.
Clarisse: He held my parents hostage and demanded I do what he said.
Vyrn: Whoa. Now, that's low.
Clarisse: We might not get along, but... they're still my parents. So I gave in.
Clarisse: Then he brought me to some kinda research facility and did weird experiments on me.
Clarisse: He said it's because my alchemy's especially effective against the founder—I mean... Cagliostro.
Cagliostro: What sort of experiments?
Clarisse: Experiments like making some thingy called the Gate of Helmuth copy my alchemy.
Clarisse: Said it could absorb anything when it's in uhh... I think it's called... albedo phase?
Cagliostro: That would make sense.
Lyria: Um. Sorry to ask, but how so?
Cagliostro: Remember I mentioned the philosopher's stone starts out in albedo—its light stage?
Cagliostro: In the light stage, the stone can absorb and copy anything. And that means anything.
Cagliostro: No doubt they made it copy Clarisse's powers with the sole purpose of defeating me.
Cagliostro: That explains the encounter we had at the research facility.
Cagliostro: No, I can't even call it that...
Cagliostro: It was just an empty building they made to lure us in.
Clarisse: Yeah. He called it the field-test area.
Cagliostro: Tsk. Top-notch con from a third-rate villain.
Cagliostro: It's not going to be easy getting out of this mess now.
Clarisse: Sorry...
Cagliostro: An apology? For what?
Cagliostro: Be proud. You're the key to my demise. That's a pretty big deal.
Clarisse: Ahaha... Thanks.
Lyria: And where are your parents now?
Clarisse: They're still being held hostage somewhere in town.
Vyrn: Oh no! Then that guy can still hurt your parents! He's gonna—
Clarisse: I know. But I had no choice.
Clarisse: There was no way I could help them on my own.
Clarisse: I kept thinking to myself: if only (Captain) and the guys were here, together we might just have a chance.
Clarisse: And when I heard you were actually coming, I knew I had to get out and reach you no matter what.
Lyria: Clarisse...
Clarisse: So please, I need you now more than ever. Help me save my parents!
  1. Let's go save them!
  2. ...

Choose: Let's go save them!
Clarisse: Thank you. I knew I could count on you, (Captain).
A tear rolls down Clarisse's cheek.
Lyria: C-Clarisse?
Clarisse: Oh, haha. Sorry. I'm just so glad to hear (Captain) say those words.
Lyria: Everything's going to be okay now. We're all with you.
Clarisse: Mm.
Cagliostro: You realize you're asking me to help my enemies, right?

Choose: ...
Clarisse: Ahaha... Sorry. I knew it was too much to ask.
Clarisse: It's too risky putting everyone in danger just for me.
Lyria: (Captain), why? As long as we work together we can make it happen!
Cagliostro: It's not about that. (Captain)'s worried about what'll happen to me.
Continue 1
Lyria: Ah...
Vyrn: Now that you mention it... Clarisse's parents want Cagliostro sealed away, don't they?
(Captain) nods.
Clarisse: I... I'll protect her from my parents! Whatever it takes!
Clarisse: So please! You have to help me!
Clarisse: I'll do anything!
Clarisse: Anything!
Facing Cagliostro, Clarisse kneels to the ground and clasps her hands in supplication.
Cagliostro: Humph. Fine. I'll help you.
Cagliostro: What kind of ancestor would I be if I didn't?
Clarisse: Thank you!
Cagliostro: However. I'll need something from you in return.
Cagliostro: Due to what Nigredo did to me, I'm unable to transmute a new body for myself right now.
Cagliostro: So I need you to do it for me.
Clarisse: Huh? Me?
Cagliostro: What? There a problem?
Clarisse: Well, I would if I could... but I can't even do most of the basics, much less transmute a body.
Cagliostro: Don't worry. I'll cram all you need into that skull of yours.
Cagliostro: A one-on-one lesson from the founder of alchemy herself. You should be flattered.
Clarisse: I'm... not really good at studying.
Cagliostro: Excuse me? Didn't you say you'd do anything?
Clarisse: Oh man...
Clarisse: Oh, I know! What if my parents helped you instead?
Cagliostro: Ask my foes to make me a new body? Great idea.
Clarisse: Um, technically I'm supposed to be your foe too though.
Cagliostro: That's different. I know I can trust you.
Cagliostro: Ah, that reminds me. I'm the one who should apologize.
Clarisse: Huh? Apologize to me? Why?
Cagliostro: You see, when Albedo attacked me, I had an inkling it was your alchemy being used.
Cagliostro: I started to think you had something to do with it.
Cagliostro: Honestly, I had it in my head that you'd turned traitor and joined the other side.
Cagliostro: But from what you've just said and done, I now know that you could never do something like that.
Cagliostro: Besides, you don't have the brains to pull off treason.
Cagliostro: I'm sorry I ever doubted you.
Cagliostro bows her head in apology.
Clarisse: I... can't shake the feeling there was an insult somewhere in there.
Clarisse: But oh well! I'm just glad you trust me!
  1. Why'd you keep this a secret from us?
  2. Did you think we'd be hurt if you told us?

Choose: Why'd you keep this a secret from us?
Vyrn: That's right! If you suspected that much, you could have at least told us about it!
Vyrn: Then maybe I wouldn't have been so shocked when the fake attacked us.
Cagliostro: Even if I did, would you have believed me? Knowing all of you, you would have tried to defend her.
Vyrn: Well...
Cagliostro: Sigh. There's no use talking about what-ifs.
Cagliostro: I had my reasons and didn't do it lightly. Just understand that.
Lyria: All right...
Cagliostro: Plus it breaks my little heart to see you guys hurting!

Choose: Did you think we'd be hurt if you told us?
Cagliostro: No. I simply didn't have any proof. I also knew it would have caused you a lot of unrest if I wasn't careful.
Cagliostro: And if (Captain)'s worried, everyone's worried.
Cagliostro: Forgive me if I don't like being surrounded by woe and gloom.
Continue 2
Cagliostro: Enough about that.
Bottom line: you're going to make me a new body.
Cagliostro: If I don't get back to my old self, we'll never be able to take down Nigredo.
Vyrn: He did say that only an alchemist can defeat Nigredo.
Cagliostro: That's right. We need to get rid of that thing right here and now. No matter what.
Cagliostro: If we don't, things are only bound to get worse in the future.
Cagliostro: Not that we can escape any other way.
Cagliostro: They won't give up the chance to capture me when I'm this weak.
Vyrn: Thought so.
Cagliostro: Clarisse. You transmuting me a body is the only way out of this.
Cagliostro: Well, instead of me, there is a chance you could...
Cagliostro: No, not for now.
Clarisse: Hm? I could what?
Cagliostro: Just forget about it.
The next step is to find your parents.
Lyria: How are we going to look for them? We don't have much time.
Deliford: I believe I know the location. I'll lead you there.
Cagliostro: All right. No time to lose!
Vyrn: Yeah!
Lyria: Let's go!
Clarisse: Mother. Father. We're coming for you!
Cagliostro, (Captain), and company decide to help rescue Clarisse's parents.
They waste not a moment in heading to the facility her parents are being held in.

Alchemist Astray - Chapter 5: The Bargain with Fate - Episode 1

When the crew sees the location is too heavily guarded to attempt an up-front attack, Deliford tries to infiltrate the facility by pretending to bring Cagliostro in as his hostage. He succeeds brilliantly.

With Deliford guiding the way, the group soon reaches the facility holding Clarisse's parents.
They find, however, that the area is saturated with soldiers and alchemists.
Vyrn: Man, this place is oozing with goons.
Deliford: Indeed. It seems they've increased security as of late.
Vyrn: How do we get Clarisse's parents out?
Vyrn: I don't think busting in with swords blazing is gonna work here.
Deliford: Leave it to me. I have a plan.
With Cagliostro slung over his shoulder, Deliford walks straight to the front entrance.
He gives no sign of trying to hide his presence.
Alchemist: ...!
Imperial Soldier: Wh-what in the! Deliford?
Deliford: Where is Paracelsus?
Imperial Soldier: I don't answer to traitors!
Deliford: Traitor? What are you talking about? I've done nothing of the sort!
Deliford: Here's the proof: I've brought the founder as prisoner.
Cagliostro: ...
With great satisfaction, Deliford boasts of the limp body slung over his shoulder.
Alchemist: What! H-how did you...
Deliford: Sedatives in her food. Child's play.
Deliford: Do you believe me now? I've not betrayed the empire at all!
Deliford: Everything you've seen has merely been an act to gain the enemies' trust!
Deliford: All done for the sake of greater gold and renown!
Imperial Soldier: If that's true, then you should have just followed Zechs's orders from the start!
Deliford: And give up the chance to take all the glory for myself? I think not.
Alchemist: Ahh, so you wanted to steal Zechs's thunder? I see.
Deliford: You're finally catching on. I'll be the one giving the orders soon enough.
Deliford: I alone captured the founder. Single-handedly. Paracelsus is sure to recognize my abilities.
Alchemist: Hrmm, yes—it all makes sense now. After all, you did say your family needed the money.
Deliford: Indeed.
Alchemist: Sacrificing your friends for your own selfish ends.
Alchemist: Ohh-ho. I like the way you think. Very well, I'll believe you.
Alchemist: Unfortunately, however, Lord Paracelsus isn't here at the moment.
Deliford: Oh? Well, that's a bit of a problem.
Deliford: We haven't much time before the founder's sedatives wear off. And when that happens...
Alchemist: Then we'll restrain her within the facility. Not even the founder can escape from here.
Alchemist: This is no ordinary building. It's been made such that no more than a set amount of alchemy can be used inside.
Deliford: Excellent. I'd appreciate it if you showed me inside immediately then. It's not going to be pretty if she wakes up out here.
Alchemist: Understood. The soldier here shall show you inside.
Imperial Soldier: Tsk.
Alchemist: You know where the confinement rooms are, yes?
Imperial Soldier: Yes...
Alchemist: Very good. Off you go then. I shall report this to Lord Paracelsus myself.
The alchemist strolls off with a skip in his step.
Imperial Soldier: Tsk. This way, Deliford.
The soldier opens the door and lets Deliford and his captive in.
Imperial Soldier: Follow me.
Imperial Soldier: Gah!
Deliford knocks the soldier unconscious with a free hand.
Deliford: All right. We're in.
Cagliostro: Mm, good job.
Cagliostro ends her feigned slumber as she's let down from Deliford's arm.
Cagliostro: Just to make things clear: none of what you said back there was true... right?
Deliford: Of course! Everything you've seen has merely been an act to gain the enemies' trust!
Cagliostro: Humph. I'll believe you... for now.
Deliford: All right, let's search for Clarisse's parents.
Cagliostro: Say... Mister Deliford?
Cagliostro: I just wanted to tell you a teensy-tiny thing, if that's okay?
Deliford: Hm? What is it?
Cagliostro: If you ever betray (Captain) and the crew, I'll kill you myself! Hehe!
Deliford: D-duly noted.

Alchemist Astray - Chapter 5: The Bargain with Fate - Episode 2

As they search the facility, Deliford's spearsmanship proves sharp as ever as he plows through guard after guard. They find Clarisse's parents and escape the facility without incident.

Deliford and Cagliostro continue their search of the facility for Clarisse's parents.
Deliford: Hragh!
Deliford: Huff!
Soldiers and alchemists assail them along the way, but Deliford's spearsmanship makes quick work of them.
Cagliostro: Not bad.
Deliford: I wasn't called the Sterling Spear for nothing.
Cagliostro: Ha! Sterling Spear, eh?
No doubt tomorrow you'll be the Aching Arms of Agony.
Deliford: D-don't be absurd.
Cagliostro: You know... I could make you a body that would never ache.
Deliford: ...
Cagliostro: Well, only if you're willing to live out your life as an adorable little girl, that is.
Deliford: Me... as a little girl...
Cagliostro: I was kidding, but now that I think about it... might not be a bad idea. What say you? Just nod and I'll do it.
Deliford: ...
I appreciate the offer, but I'll have to decline. I don't think I could act the part as well as you do.
Deliford: And above all else, I have a wife.
Cagliostro: Stop.
Deliford: What is it, Cagliostro?
Cagliostro: They're here—I can feel it. Break the door.
Deliford: Understood.
Deliford creates a gaping hole in the door with his spear.
???: Wh-what's happening?
???: Stay behind me, Promethia!
Deliford: Are you Clarisse's parents?
???: We demand to know who you are first!
Deliford: Ah, my apologies. I am Deliford, a colleague of Clarisse.
Deliford: We've come to rescue you.
???: So you're the ones she mentioned in her letter; the skyfaring crew.
Promethia: Please pardon my tone a moment ago. I'm Clarisse's mother, Promethia.
Harold: Clarisse's father, Harold.
Tell me, is our little girl safe? Is she all right?
Cagliostro: Oh, don't worry. She's safe.
Harold: What! I-it's the founder!
Seeing Cagliostro, Clarisse's father begins to panic.
Cagliostro: Good to see you still care about your daughter.
Promethia: Wh-what are you doing here?
Cagliostro: We told you: Clarisse asked us to save you.
Promethia: She... asked you?
Cagliostro: You heard me. Your little girl got on her knees and begged me to help.
Promethia: And you agreed? But I was told the founder was wild and brazen, on the brink of madness.
Harold: As was I.
Cagliostro: Like I care. No one decides what I can or can't do. No one but me.
Cagliostro: But if you won't believe what I say, just think of it as... me in a very good mood.
Cagliostro: Enough chitchat. We need to get out of here. Come with us.
Promethia: All right.
Harold: We'll follow you for now.
Deliford: Then I'll lead the way. Stay close.

Alchemist Astray - Chapter 5: The Bargain with Fate - Episode 3

Clarisse must transmute a new body for Cagliostro if there's to be any hope of defeating the enemy. Due to Clarisse's insufficient knowledge of alchemy, however, Cagliostro must give her a special crash course in the subject.

Cagliostro and Deliford succeed in rescuing Clarisse's parents and reuniting them with their daughter.
Clarisse: Mother! Father!
Promethia: Clarisse. We're so glad you're safe.
Harold: We're so sorry, Clarisse, for everything.
Clarisse: Don't worry about that; it's all behind us now! As long as you two are safe.
Promethia: Thank you, Clarisse.
Harold: There's much we want to tell you, but we'll talk more about it later. I can see now's not the time.
Clarisse: Mm. Let's do that.
Promethia: We just want you to know, Clarisse: your father and I love you more than anything.
Promethia: Though we might have been strict with you in the past, it was all done with nothing but the best of intentions for you.
Clarisse: I... I understand.
Clarisse seems perplexed at her parent's words.
Cagliostro: Case in point: your parents love you.
Cagliostro: The way they showed that love might have been misguided, but...
Clarisse: ...
Harold: ...
Promethia: ...
Cagliostro: ...
I'll let you all talk about that later.
Cagliostro: Now, time to keep your end of the bargain, Clarisse.
Clarisse: Oh man... I know, I know.
Promethia: Bargain?
Lyria: Well, you see...
Cagliostro: Time for Professor Cagliostro's super-special crash course: Alchemy for Absolute Morons!
Clarisse: Y-yaaay...
Cagliostro: Let's start with the basic laws of alchemy!
Cagliostro: You at least know what those are, don't you?
Clarisse: Umm... Uhhh...
Clarisse: ...
Clarisse: ...
Clarisse: ...
Hehe!
Cagliostro: Tsk. We don't have time for this. Get this into your skull right now!
Promethia: The founder's going to personally teach her alchemy?
Lyria: Yes, it seems Cagliostro's going to walk Clarisse through all she needs to know.
Cagliostro: C'mon! Keep up with me here!
Clarisse: Uuurrrgh...
Clarisse: I can't do this anymore!
Clarisse: My head hurts! It's gonna blow any second!
Cagliostro: Oh, for the love of alchemy... Trying to teach you is like trying to teach my sister.
Clarisse: You mean my ancient ancestor, right? What was she like?
Cagliostro: Hmm... She was just like you, actually.
Cagliostro: She never understood theories; hands-on was the only way she learned. And she never learned to do anything beyond material degradation.
Clarisse: Whoa.
Cagliostro: Sound familiar? No doubt you've got her blood in your veins.
Clarisse: You mean... She didn't have any talent as an alchemist either?
Cagliostro: Don't be mistaken. She had talent—it was just in a very narrow field.
Cagliostro: It might be hard to see the value in the talent you and my sister share.
Cagliostro: But there's a truth only people like you can find.
Cagliostro: And if you do ever reach that truth, you'll be able to rival even me.
Clarisse: Wha?
Cagliostro: Fact of the matter is... that very power is what allowed one of her descendants to seal me away.
Clarisse: ...
Cagliostro: What I'm trying to say, Clarisse, is that you do have talent.
Cagliostro: You've the potential to unlock truths I never could.
Clarisse: Heh. That's the first time someone's ever said I had talent. First time I've even gotten a compliment.
Clarisse: I don't think I need to find that truth though.
Cagliostro: Hm? But that's the key to defeating me. Isn't that what your family's always wanted?
Clarisse: It is. But my family doesn't speak for me. It's my life and I've no plans to spend it trying to defeat you.
Cagliostro: That so?
Cagliostro: All right then—break's over. Class is back in session!
Clarisse: Nooo!
Clarisse: Uurrggh... My head.
Cagliostro: That ends the lecture. Do you remember what you need to do?
Clarisse: Yeah... I should be able to pull it off. I think.
Cagliostro: Very well. Then let's begin. I'm putting my cute little body and life in your hands. Don't botch this.
Clarisse: Got it! I can do this!

Alchemist Astray - Chapter 5: The Bargain with Fate - Episode 4

Clarisse fails to alchemize a body for Cagliostro. But before she can try again, Paracelsus and Nigredo attack. Cagliostro is severely injured by the attack and is helpless to resist as Nigredo absorbs her.

Clarisse attempts to alchemize a new body for Cagliostro.
But all does not go as planned. The task proves too difficult as Clarisse continues to fail time after time.
Cagliostro: Tsk. Failed again.
Clarisse: I'm sorry. I knew it—I'm not cut out for this.
Lyria: Don't feel down, Clarisse!
Cagliostro: Lyria's right. You shouldn't blame yourself. I should have accounted for this.
Cagliostro: I knew your talents were specialized, but I never imagined your field would be this narrow. You really are just like my sister.
Cagliostro: I need to think of a different way to tackle this.
Cagliostro descends deep into thought.
Cagliostro: (There is one way... but it's a gamble. Who knows if she can pull it off.)
Clarisse: One more time. Let me try just one more time!
  1. You can do it.
  2. Just relax.

Choose: You can do it.
(Captain) proceeds to pat Clarisse on the head.
Clarisse: (Captain)... Thanks for the encouragement.
Clarisse: You always did know how to make me feel better.
Clarisse: This might be the first time anyone's ever pat me on the head.
Clarisse: All right! I feel like a whole new person! I can do this!

Choose: Just relax.
(Captain) proceeds to take Clarisse's hand.
Clarisse: Thanks, (Captain).
Clarisse: You always did know how to make me feel better.
Clarisse: Ahh, I feel like a weight's been lifted off my shoulders. Okay, here I go!
Continue 1
Vyrn: That's the spirit! We still have time, so—
???: Unfortunately for you, I don't intend to give you any time at all.
???: Nigredo. Get them.
In that instant a beam of light shoots out from Nigredo.
The beam's target: Clarisse.
Clarisse: Wha—
Cagliostro: Don't just stand there!
Cagliostro dashes in front of Clarisse, intercepting the attack.
Cagliostro: Gargh!
Taking the brunt of the attack, Cagliostro falls to the ground.
Paracelsus: I try to take out a pawn, and I strike the queen instead. What luck.
Cagliostro: You!
Paracelsus: Now's the time, Nigredo. Absorb the founder.
Following Paracelsus's words, Nigredo inches its hulking body forward.
Nigredo: ...
Soon Nigredo begins to use its abilities to disintegrate and absorb the fallen Cagliostro.
Cagliostro: Tsk. I'm not one to gamble, but beggars can't be choosers.
Cagliostro: Clarisse! I'll hold on as long as I can, so do what you can to save me!
Clarisse: Huh?
Cagliostro: Remember your promise. Make sure you keep it.
Clarisse: B-but how! I can't—
Cagliostro: You're just like my sister—you're good at breaking things down! If you can do that, there's still a way!
Cagliostro: Listen! All you need to do is what you do best!
Cagliostro: Don't worry about the theory!
Clarisse: Huh? What? What's that supposed to mean?
Cagliostro: Clarisse, you can do this.
Cagliostro: You're the only one who can! Use the talent that only you have!
With those last words, Cagliostro disappears, completely absorbed by Nigredo.
Clarisse: Oh no...
Lyria: No! Cagliostro!
Vyrn: This can't be real.
Paracelsus: Yes! Finally! Soon all I've ever wanted shall be mine!
Paracelsus's arms and body flail around in total bliss and excitement.
Light from within Nigredo's crystal begins to glow bright.
When the light fades, what remains is a Nigredo in Cagliostro's form.
Paracelsus: Ahahaha! The founder's knowledge is finally ours! No... it's mine! All mine!
Paracelsus: I am the true founder of alchemy now!
With a loud voice, Paracelsus proclaims his achievement.
(Captain) and company are left stunned and lost for words.

Alchemist Astray - Chapter 6: The Acceptance of Self - Episode 1

Nigredo has fully absorbed Cagliostro and gained her powers. The crew's only hope remains in Clarisse.

(Captain) and company stand bewildered, staring at a Nigredo that's assumed Cagliostro's form.
Clarisse: This... This is all my fault.
  1. Get ahold of yourself!
  2. It's not over!

Choose: Get ahold of yourself!
Clarisse: But if only I could have—
Deliford: Clarisse! (Captain) is right!
Deliford: Save your regrets for later! For now we need to focus on the task at hand!
Deliford: It's not over just yet!

Choose: It's not over!
Deliford: (Captain) is right, Clarisse! It's not over just yet!
Clarisse: But there's nothing more we can do.
Deliford: There is. There has to be.
Continue 1
Clarisse: No, this is it! This is the end.
Deliford: I won't believe that Cagliostro would give up so simply.
Deliford: You heard her, didn't you?
Deliford: She said she would hold on as best she could, so don't give up!
Lyria: Ah! Cagliostro did say in the past that she can survive for some time even without her body.
Vyrn: ...!
Vyrn: You're right! I heard it too!
Clarisse: Huh?
Vyrn: Geez... I thought Cagliostro really bought the farm for a minute.
Lyria: I'm just glad she's safe! And the seal seems to be gone. Right, (Captain)?
Cagliostro: Heh. Safe? I wouldn't say that. The death you witnessed in there was real.
Cagliostro: I did indeed die... or, more accurately, my body did.
Vyrn: Wh-what the? What's that supposed to mean?
Cagliostro: I was really planning on just lifting the seal on my old body.
Cagliostro: But you know, you gotta do what you gotta do. I just stopped using the old body and used it as fodder for my new one.
Lyria: Wait... What?
Cagliostro: Well, my alchemic power already exists outside of the physical realm.
Cagliostro: So I transmuted myself outside of the physical plane, created a new body, and then put myself right back in.
Cagliostro: Of course, a soul without a body is a very delicate thing.
Cagliostro: But if you follow the laws of alchemical and magical thought, you can take some of the life energy from surrounding forces.
Deliford: So if we can defeat that dark entity before it's too late, Cagliostro will be safe?
Lyria: That's right!
Clarisse: But how are we going to defeat it? I certainly wouldn't stand a ch—
Lyria: That's not true! Remember what Cagliostro told you!
Lyria: She knows you can help her!
Lyria: Remember her words.
Clarisse: Ah.
Lyria: She might have a lot of secrets...
Lyria: But she's not one to lie.
Clarisse: ...
Lyria: And if we were in your place, we wouldn't give up trying to find a way to save her.
Lyria: There has to be a way.
(Captain) gives a nod in firm agreement.
Vyrn: I believe in you, Clarisse!
Deliford: As do I!
Clarisse: Guys...
Harold: Clarisse. Your mother and I, the founder, all of us—we believe in you.
Harold: Are you going to let that go to waste?
Clarisse: ...
Promethia: Believe in yourself, daughter. You can do this. No one but you can.
Clarisse: But I don't know what to do.
Promethia: Think back, my child. There must be an answer in the founder's words.
Clarisse: ...
Promethia: Until you find that answer, we'll buy you as much time as we can.
Promethia: So please, Clarisse, don't give up.
Clarisse: Okay. I'll do my best.
Promethia: That's all we need ever strive to do.
Vyrn: Wait, shouldn't you two hide someplace safe instead?
Promethia: You think we'd abandon our own daughter? We're better parents than that!
Promethia: And I'm a descendant of the founder's sister. An alchemist in my own right.
Harold: As am I.
Deliford: Then the both of you will be in charge of protecting Clarisse.
Deliford: The rest of us should have our hands full as it is.
Promethia: Understood.
Paracelsus: Deliberate all you wish. Your doom shall meet you all the same.
Deliford: How kind of you to wait for us. Before I know it you'll be opening doors for us.
Paracelsus: Me? Kind? You're gravely mistaken, my poor soldier.
Paracelsus: I merely wish to document as much as possible from the now founder-infused Nigredo.
Paracelsus: It would be a shame if you lot are defeated too quickly. I wouldn't be able to extract much data from that, now would I?
Paracelsus: Now then. Show me all your might. A plain death awaits you otherwise.

Alchemist Astray - Chapter 6: The Acceptance of Self - Episode 2

Struggling to think of a way to save Cagliostro, Clarisse comes to the conclusion that her only talent is destruction. Embracing the fact awakens the dormant power within her.

(Captain) and company battle with the Cagliostro mimic.
The combined effect of the philosopher's stone's dark phase and Cagliostro's power, however, proves too great.
Deliford: I knew we were in for a fight, but this...
Vyrn: Man, Cagliostro's no joke.
Deliford: And with our energy being drained, things are getting more perilous by the moment.
Lyria: But we can't give up now!
Deliford: Absolutely! Onward, (Captain)!
Nodding to Deliford's words, they enter the fray once again.
Paracelsus: Yes, yes. Keep it up, my little lab rats. More's the data.
Clarisse: Oh no. They don't look like they can last much longer. But what can I do to help?
Zechs: You can't hold against my men forever!
Promethia: I'll never let you have Clarisse!
Harold: I frown upon resorting to violence, but for my daughter I'll do anything.
Promethia and Harold fend off Zechs's forces with unrelenting fury.
Clarisse: ...!
Mother! Father!
Promethia: Don't worry about us, dear. Concentrate on what you need to do!
Clarisse: A-all right.
Clarisse: I have to think of something. But what...
Cagliostro: Listen! All you need to do is what you do best!
Cagliostro: Don't worry about the theory!
Cagliostro: Clarisse, you can do this.
Cagliostro: You're the only one who can! Use the talent that only you have!
Clarisse: What were you trying to tell me? I don't get it...
Clarisse: Ohh man...
Clarisse: Hmm...
Clarisse: I've had it! I can't think anymore! Why's thinking gotta be so hard!
Clarisse: There's only one thing I can do!
Clarisse dashes toward (Captain) and company.
Promethia: Clarisse?
Zechs: Unbelievable! She's coming right to us! Get her!
Imperial soldiers rush to follow Zechs's orders.
But Clarisse greets them all with her alchemic forte.
Clarisse: Outta the way!
An explosion of epic proportions sends the battalion flying in every direction.
Promethia: What!
Zechs: I-impossible! My soldiers! All my soldiers!
Deliford: Pant... Huff...
Paracelsus: Mmm. What marvelous data I've collected.
Paracelsus: I only regret you won't live to see the next phase in the stone's evolution.
Paracelsus: I'd hoped there was a chance you might survive. More's the pity.
Paracelsus: But no matter. It's time to finish this.
Clarisse: Not on my watch!
Lyria: Clarisse!
Paracelsus: Finally come to grace us with your presence, I see. I assume you've thought of some way to defeat my Nigredo?
Clarisse: Nope! No idea!
Vyrn: Whaaat!
Clarisse: I'm no good at using my head. Always knew it.
Clarisse: But there's one thing I can do. Just one thing I ever could.
Clarisse: I blow stuff up and break 'em down!
Clarisse: And heck knows I'm the best at it there is!
As she speaks Clarisse begins to use alchemic decomposition on Nigredo.
Paracelsus: Fool. You think Nigredo can be brought down by that?
Clarisse: Then I'll just keep kapowing till it can't move no more!
But try as Clarisse might, she is unable to decompose Nigredo.
She breathes heavily from the weight of the exertion.
Clarisse: Pant... Huff...
Paracelsus: ...
Had enough?
Clarisse: Argh! Why's everything have to be so hard! I wish I could just blow everything up!
Clarisse: Can't do that though... Wouldn't want to destroy Cagliostro's soul with everything else.
Clarisse: If only there was a way to blow up just the parts I wanted.
Clarisse: Hm? Only a part?
Clarisse: Uhh, wait, what did she say about that again? But... If... No, but...
Clarisse: Argh! Why can't I remember the lesson!
Paracelsus: You waste my time.
Nigredo, end them.
Clarisse: Argh, whatever! I guess it was kinda like... this?
Paracelsus: What!
Clarisse: Huh?
Tiny particles gush out from all over Nigredo.
Paracelsus: Th-that's impossible. How did you...
Vyrn: Clarisse! What the heck was that?
Clarisse: I knew it...
Clarisse: This is what she meant.
Clarisse: I remember now: she said alchemy's all about breaking things down and building them back up.
Clarisse: She said you could break down anything in this world into its most basic parts—into its prima materia.
Clarisse: I still can't wrap my head around all of it, but I'm starting to get it now!
Clarisse: Let's see... I think I can do that again if I just...
Paracelsus: She did it again!
Clarisse: Now we're talkin'! Still don't know if I can pull it off, but... Oh well!
Clarisse: We'll manage somehow! I'll make it happen!
Clarisse: All righty then! Time to have some fun!

Alchemist Astray - Chapter 6: The Acceptance of Self - Episode 3

Clarisse succeeds in using existential dissolution to defeat Nigredo and aid in Cagliostro's revival. Despite this, Paracelsus seems eerily delighted.

Clarisse: Try this one on for size!
Lyria: ...
Vyrn: ...
Deliford: ...
Paracelsus: How could this possibly be happening?
Clarisse causes Nigredo to decompose with increasing speed.
The sheer force of her destruction leaves Paracelsus's mouth gaping.
Clarisse: And now for the grand finale!
Lyria: Clarisse, wait! You can't!
Vyrn: Yeah! Cagliostro's soul is still in there somewhere!
Clarisse: Don't you worry! It'll all be okay as long as we hurry! Here comes the big kapow!
With one last blow, Nigredo crumbles to dust.
Clarisse: And the winner is: me!
Vyrn: But what about Cagliostro?
???: Cough, cough... Achoo!
Cagliostro: You certainly know how to make a mess of things.
Lyria: Huh? Cagliostro!
Clarisse: Are you okay? I tried to do as you said and kapowed away everything but what was needed.
Cagliostro: I am—thanks to you. In fact I'm feeling better than ever.
Cagliostro: I knew you'd figure it out eventually. You really are just like that sister of mine.
Clarisse: Ahaha. Yeah, I'm just no good with using my head.
Clarisse: So I did what I could and gave all I had.
Clarisse: And then all I had to do was... wing it, I guess. Somehow you sorta kinda get the hang of it.
Cagliostro: Tsk. I can't stand you hands-on types.
Vyrn: Hey, uhh, can someone fill me in on what just happened here?
Cagliostro: Essentially, she deconstructed and reduced everything that wasn't my soul.
Cagliostro: The decomposition of matter beyond what's possible with physical tools...
Cagliostro: She succeeded in performing maximum alchemic decay: existential dissolution.
Vyrn: And what's that in normal speak?
Cagliostro: Hmm, all right. Let me ask you this: can you turn mixed-fruit punch back into pure apple juice?
Vyrn: Duh. No way. The apple's all mixed up with the other juices.
Cagliostro: Ordinarily, yes.
Cagliostro: But what if I told you it was possible to remove everything but the apple juice from the drink?
Vyrn: Well, I guess that would make it apple juice then. But what's that got to do with...
Vyrn: Wait, don't tell me that's what she...
Cagliostro: That's what she did, all right. Nigredo was the fruit punch.
Cagliostro: And Clarisse removed everything but the apple juice—my soul.
Cagliostro: I took care of the rest from my end.
Cagliostro: I transmuted a new body for myself using the matter that was once Nigredo. Then I slipped my soul into the body and here I am.
Cagliostro: I'll be honest though; it was quite the gamble.
Cagliostro: Well, nothing ventured, nothing gained. And this time I gained more than just a regular-old body.
Cagliostro: Not only do I feel better than ever, but the decay from the philosopher's stone's dark phase can't affect me anymore.
Cagliostro: After all, my body's practically made of philosopher's stone essence now.
Paracelsus: How... How could my plan have failed?
Cagliostro: Doesn't take a genius to figure that one out.
Cagliostro: You underestimated Clarisse. No... you underestimated us.
Cagliostro: Simple as that.
Paracelsus: Haha. Is that so? I see. Yes, I believe you're right.
Cagliostro: Now... I hope you realize the amount of pain you've just wrought yourself into.
Cagliostro: Get ready, and enjoy it while it lasts.
As Cagliostro gives a sly grin, (Captain) and company point their blades toward Paracelsus.
Paracelsus: Humph.
Paracelsus, however, seems eerily calm.

Alchemist Astray - Chapter 6: The Acceptance of Self - Episode 4

Paracelsus reveals that once Nigredo is fully degraded, it ascends to the next phase in its evolution. Nigredo's remains gather together, and from it the primal beast Alpheus is born.

(Captain) and company manage to defeat Nigredo with the help of Clarisse.
Seeing this, Zechs rushes to Paracelsus in a panic.
Zechs: Paracelsus! What's the meaning of this! This isn't what you promised!
Zechs: You said that weapon was supposed to have the power to rival the gods!
Paracelsus: Hahaha!
In stark contrast to Zechs, a sickly laugh escapes Paracelsus.
Zechs: You think this is funny? We're on the brink of doom here!
Paracelsus: Silence, cretin. Don't ruin my good mood.
Zechs: What!
Cagliostro: ...
You seem awfully cheerful.
Paracelsus: Hahahaha! Oh yes. What a joy this is.
Paracelsus: Dare I say this is might even be the greatest day of my life.
Paracelsus: To have been able to gather this much valuable data is astounding.
Paracelsus: What's more, you've even decomposed Nigredo for me. How could I not be glad?
Cagliostro: What are you spouting off about?
Paracelsus: Have you forgotten, O great founder? Of what Nigredo is made from.
Cagliostro: Oh? So that's your angle!
In that instant the once scattered remains of Nigredo begin to gather together.
Vyrn: What the! What's going on?
Lyria: Wh-why is it...
Vyrn: Lyria? You sensing something?
Lyria: Nigredo's remains... I can feel it giving off the aura of a primal beast.
Paracelsus: Ahh. You can sense primal beasts, can you?
Paracelsus: Yes, I do recall hearing of such a one from the empire. So that was you.
Lyria: ...!
Paracelsus: The girl is correct. The Gate of Helmuth in fact incorporates a primal beast's core.
Paracelsus: While this might not hold any meaning during the nigredo phase...
Paracelsus: It takes on enormous significance when the stone passes into veriditas—its emerald phase.
Paracelsus: The disintegrated nigredo particles combine with the primal beast essence...
Paracelsus: To create an entirely new existence.
Lyria: The emerald phase comes after the dark phase, right?
Clarisse: But I thought I completely decomposed Nigredo.
Cagliostro: A philosopher's stone in the dark phase progresses into the emerald phase upon being decomposed.
Cagliostro: Just like a phoenix, it reintegrates itself from its ashes and is reborn into the emerald phase.
Paracelsus: Precisely. It's only a shame that it can no longer do so with the founder inside it.
Paracelsus: But it will pass into the emerald phase all the same.
Paracelsus: Now, arise, my creation. Show them your newfound glory.
Paracelsus: The glory of the primal beast Alpheus.
Alpheus: ...
Paracelsus: Behold. The union of the relics of the Astrals and our alchemical knowledge! The ultimate primal beast!
Paracelsus: Let's see how you stand against this.
Cagliostro: Ha! You call that ultimate? Don't make me laugh!
Clarisse: Ultimate or not, we'll kapow it to bits all the same!

Alchemist Astray - Ending - Episode 1

The combined force of Clarisse's newfound ability and Cagliostro's power bring defeat to Alpheus once and for all. The mastermind Paracelsus, however, remains at large. With peace now restored, Clarisse becomes apprentice to the founder of alchemy—Cagliostro. Thus eons of discord among alchemists end, and a new chapter in history begins.

Cagliostro: Clarisse! Don't leave a speck of dust behind!
Clarisse: Okeydokers! Leave it to ol' Clarisse!
Clarisse: Right now there's nothing I can't wreck!
Taking the entirety of Cagliostro and Clarisse's attack, Alpheus crumbles away into the wind without so much as a trace.
Paracelsus: I-impossible... My Alpheus...
Cagliostro: Now then, let's get back to that world of pain we were talking about.
Cagliostro: I know you've been looking oh-so very forward to it.
Zechs: D-do something about this, Paracelsus!
Paracelsus: As I thought, my initial estimations were too lax. No, I couldn't have foreseen how powerful they would be.
Paracelsus: Hahaha. What riveting research this shall make.
Paracelsus: Very well. I'll settle with having succeeded in reaching the emerald stage for now.
Paracelsus: Until we meet again, founder...
Paracelsus: I'll be analyzing all the data you've given me.
Cagliostro: You're not going anywhere!
Paracelsus: Humph.
A blinding flash of light bursts from Paracelsus.
Before the group's eyes can adjust, Paracelsus escapes.
Cagliostro: Tsk. He's gone. Looks like I'll have to take it out on this guy instead.
Zechs: W-wait! I was only following his orders! Please, have mercy!
Clarisse: You've got a lot of nerve saying that after kidnapping my parents.
Zechs: Eep! D-Deliford! Help me! We're friends, aren't we? Brothers even!
Zechs: I brought you back into the army again, didn't I?
Deliford: Haven't you already discharged me for treason?
Zechs: I'll bring you back again, again! I'll even raise your salary! So please—
Deliford: I refuse!
Deliford: My place is with (Captain) and the crew. I'm done with the empire.
Zechs: N-no!
Cagliostro: Heh heh heh heh. Let the fun begin!
Zechs: Eep!
Leaving Clarisse's parents in charge of handling the aftermath of the events, (Captain) and company return to the Grandcypher.
Deliford: (Captain), my sincerest apologies for all the trouble I've caused.
Clarisse: I'm sorry too.
Clarisse and Deliford bow their heads in apology.
Lyria: No, no! You don't need to be sorry! I'm just glad we all got out of there safely!
Vyrn: Yeah. And it's neither of your faults; they tricked you guys.
Cagliostro: None of you ever change... No surprise there though.
Clarisse: And I have you to thank for everything, Great-Granduncle.
Clarisse: For all you've done for me and for helping (Captain).
Cagliostro: I was looking out for myself too. I wasn't being some self-sacrificing—
Cagliostro: Wait a second! What did you just call me? I'm not some shriveled-up old-timer!
Clarisse: Huh? But you're the brother of my great-great-great-great-great... great-grandmother. Great-Granduncle's close enough.
Vyrn: Pfft! She's got a point.
Cagliostro: You had better watch your back, lizard.
Vyrn: H-hey! What did I do? She said it!
Cagliostro: At any rate, don't you dare call me that again! Understood?
Clarisse: Okay, Master Cagliostro then!
Lyria: Master?
Clarisse: Mhmm! After all, she's basically my mentor now! Right, Master Cags?
Cagliostro: Stop it. Don't call me that either.
Cagliostro turns her face away from Clarisse.
The great alchemist's attempt at hiding her blushing cheeks, however, fails miserably.
Clarisse: Ohh! You like it, dontcha! D'aww, Master! You're such a cutie-wootie-bunny-pickle!
Cagliostro: Of course I'm cute! I'm the most adorable alchemist in the—
Cagliostro: Wait, I told you not to call me that!
Clarisse: Awww, party pooper.
Cagliostro: Don't think you can sway me with your cutesy wiles!
Clarisse: C'mon, we're both adorable young girls here. Can't we be civil about this? Well, I'm the only one who's actually young though.
Clarisse: Don't you think we should let the younger one have her way?
  1. Of course.
  2. Not necessarily.

Choose: Of course.
Clarisse: I like the way you think, (Captain)!
Cagliostro: Heh. Oh, is that so?
Cagliostro: Say, (Captain)? Think you could come over to my room later?
Cagliostro: I'll show you just how good I can be!
Cagliostro: And I'll make sure you never utter babble like that again... or anything else for that matter.

Choose: Not necessarily.
Cagliostro: Yay! I knew you'd say that, (Captain)!
Cagliostro: Little Cagliostro just wub, wub, wubs you!
Clarisse: Meh, personally I'd go for the younger one though.
Clarisse: Well, to each their own.
Continue 1
Cagliostro: Anyhow, no more of this Master nonsense!
Clarisse: Oh, c'mon! I'm your own blood! Just this one thing! Pretty please? Master.
Clarisse: If not, I'll just keep calling you Great-Granduncle.
Cagliostro: Ohh, I see, I see. So that's how you want to play it, eh?
Cagliostro: Very well. I'll allow it; Master it is.
Clarisse: Really? Yay!
Cagliostro: Oh yes. As my apprentice, however, you are to follow everything I say. Everything.
Clarisse: Huh?
Cagliostro: Right then. First order of business: alchemy studies.
Cagliostro: I won't allow my legacy to be sullied by an inept apprentice.
Cagliostro: You should feel honored: the very founder of alchemy is now your personal mentor.
Clarisse: Um... A-any chance I could, uhh... not study?
Cagliostro: What part of everything don't you understand? Class begins immediately!
Clarisse: Awww, maaan! C'mon, I'm your own blood! Cut me some slack!
As Clarisse yelps and begs, Cagliostro drags the freshly-initiated apprentice away by the collar.
It's plain to see, however, that the two seem happier than ever before.
The founder of alchemy and an alchemist charged with the founder's extermination.
Two alchemists, once destined adversaries, now walk a new path together.
Bringing an end to eons of discord among alchemists.
And a new chapter in the annals of alchemy begins.
