One of the gods of ancient Kahua, Hine-Nui is a supernatural beast who rules Rarohenga. It does not possess a distinct personality.Over the course of its long history, it shed its mortal flesh and became a spirit. While it ordinarily cannot be controlled by mortals, a ritual known as mana akua makes it possible for chosen warriors to house its spirit within their bodies.When Hina had channeled its soul into her body, it had remained under her control. However, after she had been sealed in Rarohenga, her grip over it loosened—allowing it to drag the souls of the people Hine-Nui once knew into the depths of the underworld.
