A Soul Reaper and captain of Squad 12 of the Thirteen Court Guard Squads. He also serves as the chief of the Department of Research and Development, an institution that researches spiritual ability. Mayuri's face is painted in a strange design and, for some reason, his body radiates light. He has developed several types of drugs and weaponry, and used a number of them brought into the Sky Realm in combat.
His Zanpakuto is called Ashisogijizo. When he releases its power, a baby's face appears in the guard of the katana, the weapon splits into three wavy blades from the tip, and Ashisogijizo gains the power to coat itself in a venom that paralyzes any opponent it cuts to seal their movement. During his time in the Sky Realm, he does not use this form of his Zanpakuto; instead, he exclusively uses his Bankai, Konjiki Ashisogijizo Matai Fukuin Shotai. Its power is to create Konjiki Ashisogijizo with abilities most suited to the situation.
He makes use of his drugs and weapons in the battles against Sakunagi, and ultimately uses the power of his Konjiki Ashisogijizo to completely nullify Sakunagi's ability to learn.
