Gotta Be Big!
(Captain) and Vyrn run into Darydara and Rackam drinking together one night. After getting the wasted helmsman to bed, they return to find Darydara has scrubbed the room spotless. As he confesses to his sneaky nightly cleanings, Vyrn remarks he sounds like a small fry. Thus, Darydara vows to become a bigger man.
Setting course for the next stop in their journey, the crew board the Grandcypher and depart from Winseria.
A few days later, late at night...
Darydara: Listen up! It's a man's duty to drink like he means it. Ya hear me, Rackam?
Vyrn: Hey, Darydara.
Darydara: Glug, glug, glug... Pwah!
Darydara: Huh? Rackam? Where'd ya go?
Vyrn: I said hey. You're lookin' the wrong way.
Darydara: Whoa, he disappeared! That's crazy! Gwahahahaha!
Vyrn: Rackam already passed out! Both of you guys are goin' way too hard!
Rackam: ...
Darydara: Wha? No way. This barely even counts as a drink...
Darydara: Do you see how massive I am! I need a bigger mug!
Vyrn: That's enough alcohol. Look at all those empty bottles rollin' around on the ground...
Darydara: What are you talking about? They're all lined up!
Darydara: Hrm... They could use some organizing though... This one goes there, and this one should go... Hic...
Choose: Time to clean this place up.
Vyrn: Yeah. But before we do, let's carry Rackam back to his room...
Choose: Let's take Rackam to his room.
Vyrn: Yeah. We can't just leave him like this...
Continue 1
Vyrn: Man, what were they gonna do if we didn't happen to pass through this area?
Darydara: Another drink! Don't tell me you're already done, Rackaaaaam!
Vyrn: Zip it! The only thing you're drinkin' now is water!
Vyrn shoves a large pitcher of water at Darydara, who proceeds to carefully cradle it in his arms.
Darydara: Could be bigger, but I guess this is good enough... Thanks, red Rackam!
Vyrn: Really? I'm red Rackam now?
Darydara: Glug, glug, glug...
Vyrn: Is he seriously drinkin' straight from the pitcher?
Vyrn: Well, he could use the hydration. Let's go, (Captain). He can do his own thing.
Carrying Rackam together, (Captain) and Vyrn watch as Darydara chugs the pitcher of water, then finally turn to leave.
After a quick examination from Tikoh to ensure that Rackam is okay, the two carry their friend to his room before returning to the dining area.
Vyrn: Phew... That was rough. It's already so late...
Vyrn: We gotta tidy up the kitchen by tomorrow morning too. Guess we've got our work cut out for us...
Vyrn: Wait a sec. Is it just me, or is everything already clean?
The empty bottles and leftover snacks from the earlier drinking fiasco are nowhere to be found, almost as if the event had never occurred.
Vyrn: Did the Lowain bros straighten the place up while doin' breakfast prep?
Vyrn: I dunno... I might be imaginin' things, but it looks way cleaner than usual...
???: ...
Suddenly sensing a certain presence, the pair turn their gaze toward a dark corner of the room.
Vyrn: Darydara? What're ya doin' crawling on the ground like that?
Darydara: Hm? There was a bit of grime that had been bothering me for a while.
Darydara stands up, then points at a barely visible groove on the floor of the dining hall.
Darydara: I washed the dishes, sorted the bottles, wiped down the table, then scrubbed that spot out while mopping the floor.
Vyrn: O-oh... We clean this place regularly, but since it's so big...
Vyrn: It's hard to get to every nook and cranny unless we're doin' a spring cleaning or something. So uh... thanks, I guess?
Darydara: Actually, a few other things have been bothering me too.
Vyrn: Huh?
Darydara: There's sand stuck between the floorboards of the deck, the shelves in the hall aren't organized properly, and running a finger on the lounge's window sills came up with some dust.
Vyrn: Um...
Darydara: The flowers in that cafe with the absent manager are wilting with nobody to change them out. Also, tonight's soup was a little too salty.
Vyrn: Quit sweatin' the small stuff! That's hardly worth complainin' about!
Darydara: Graaagh!
Vyrn: Whoa!
Darydara: Oh no! You're right!
The Harvin man crumples to the ground and lets out a shout of despair.
Darydara: This... This isn't big of me at all!
Vyrn: You still drunk or something?
Darydara: I'm always trying to hold it in! I tell myself this is just one of the sacrifices you make to live with other people!
Darydara: Even caring about this stuff is the opposite of big, so I try not to think about it... Staying up to clean at night is my one escape!
Vyrn: You've been goin' through it, huh? I guess bein' a great bean counter has its drawbacks.
Vyrn: Although sneaking around at night to clean seems less "big guy," and more "small fry," doesn't it?
Darydara: Gagh!
Vyrn: Oops.
Darydara: Urgh...
Darydara: Raaagh!
Vyrn: D-Darydara!
Darydara: ...
Vyrn: You okay? Sorry, I went a bit too far...
Darydara: I've made up my mind...
Vyrn: Huh?
Darydara: I've left the old me behind with Caeser. From now on, I'm just a regular member of this crew—which is why...
Darydara: The new me is going to be big! Well, I already am, but new me, new big!
Darydara: That's my oath, and you two are my witnesses! I'll prove myself, just you wait and see!
Vyrn: O-okay... That's fine and all, but why do you keep whispering?
Darydara: Don't be stupid!
Darydara: I'd wake people up if I were to go shouting through the halls at this hour!
Vyrn: Sure, now you care...
Amidst Darydara's seemingly considerate whispers, Vyrn breathes a sigh of exasperation that echoes throughout the ship.
And so, with great conviction, Darydara proclaims his oath to become a man of great stature and attain a "new big."
Gotta Be Big!: Scene 2
Darydara joins (Captain) and Vyrn as they shop for supplies. He pays for everything out of his own pocket, annoying Vyrn with his insistence to prove how great he is. As the three head back, a strange woman invites them to a weapons exhibition—to which Darydara happily obliges.
The following day, the crew stops at a nearby island to restock on supplies.
Vyrn: Um, we're lookin' for some soap and writing ink, as well as...
(Captain) and Vyrn read off their shopping list as they grab the various items.
Darydara: ...
Shopkeeper: That's a lot of supplies. You mentioned being skyfarers, right? Your airship must be quite large.
Vyrn: Hehe, it sure is! We need a bunch of stuff, so goin' shopping is always a huge deal.
Darydara: ...
Vyrn: What else is on the list? Let's see...
Darydara: Enough with the tiny details!
Vyrn: Whoa!
Vyrn: You scared me... Why're ya shoutin' out of the blue like that?
Darydara: You keep looking at that teeny-tiny list for your itty-bitty needs. Why get all caught up in the details?
In a single swift movement, Darydara grabs the pile of supplies and heaves them onto the counter.
Darydara: I want all of this.
Shopkeeper: R-right. Your total is...
Without skipping a beat, Darydara drops a huge bag of coins before the shopkeeper.
Shopkeeper: Huh? This is way too much...
Darydara: Keep the change. We'll be going now.
Shopkeeper: Wait!
Vyrn: H-hold on, Darydara!
Although initially shocked by the sight of the Harvin man hauling out the purchased goods, (Captain) and Vyrn soon give chase to their benefactor.
Vyrn: Heeey! Darydara!
Darydara: What?
Vyrn: Why'd you pay for all that stuff? Are ya sure we got everything we need?
Darydara: Of course I am. Also, you left a few things out of your list.
Darydara: We need an extra knife sharpener, but you didn't write that down. It's fine though. I bought one for you.
Vyrn: I mean, thanks and all, but I don't think you should be wastin' all that money. Katalina's gonna get mad at us for spendin' too much.
Darydara: Why would I pay with the crew's money? This is my own cash.
Vyrn: You're buyin' stuff we all use together with your personal money?
Darydara: I don't sweat the small stuff. That's what makes me the bigger man.
Choose: A bit pricey, don't you think?
Vyrn: Yeah, I agree. But money matters aside, our crew is really big...
Choose: No need to go so far...
Vyrn: Yeah, that's right. We have enough funds to cover our expenses.
Continue 1
Darydara: A big-hearted man doesn't worry himself with trivialities.
Darydara: But I guess I'd be lying if I didn't say it hurt my wallet a tiny bit...
Vyrn: Make sure (Captain) reimburses you for everything, okay?
Darydara: A great man would never go back on his word!
Darydara: Besides, how am I supposed to get reimbursed without a receipt?
Vyrn: I swear, you're too earnest for your own good...
Strange Woman: Um, excuse me. You there, the kind sir with a large frame.
Darydara: Oh? You must be referring to me.
Vyrn: I dunno, that lady's way bigger than you though...
Darydara: Excuse me, Vyrn. Care to explain what you mean by that?
Strange Woman: Impossible! You, good sir, most certainly surpass my petite self—that is, both in heart and in size. Obviously.
Strange Woman: In any case, I couldn't help but call out to you after noticing your tremendous character. Do you have a moment?
Darydara: You sure know what's up. I don't mind sparing some time for the damsel with a sharp eye.
Strange Woman: Oh my, what a wonderful response! Ehehehe...
Vyrn: Hey, (Captain). There's something fishy about that lady, don't ya think?
Strange Woman: Incidentally, there's an antique weapons exhibition going on nearby.
Strange Woman: I thought someone as big and strong as yourself would appreciate this opportunity. Would you like to take a look with me?
Darydara: An exhibition, huh?
Vyrn: Sorry, miss, but we gotta head back to our ship...
Darydara: I can't turn down an invitation like that! Lead the way.
Vyrn: Hey, cut it out! Don't you see how suspicious this whole situation is?
Darydara: I thought I told you a man never goes back on his word. What sort of lowly boor would I be if I didn't make time for a lady in need.
Vyrn: What are you talkin' about? Have you gone crazy after makin' that silly promise last night?
Darydara: There's nothing silly about a man's oath!
Strange Woman: Goodness! I've never met a more magnanimous soul! Your huge—no, gargantuan heart is so impressive! Now then, right this way!
Vyrn: Ugh, this guy... Fine, we'll join ya!
(Captain) and Vyrn once again find themselves chasing Darydara, this time as he's led off by a strange woman.
Gotta Be Big!: Scene 3
The woman attempts to sell an item to Darydara and pressures him to sign a contract. Vyrn suspects it's a scam, but the Harvin, after making one small edit, proceeds with the transaction anyway. Suddenly, two suspicious men appear, demanding Darydara to pay them ten million rupies.
Strange Woman: This here is an antique weapon crafted by the ancient Geonoid people using their horns. Isn't it absolutely marvelous? It's certainly unique!
Vyrn: I-I guess...
The strange woman shows weapon after weapon, each one appearing to be damaged beyond recognition.
Vyrn: If I'm being honest, everything here looks like junk...
Vyrn: There's something off about this exhibition... I don't see anybody else here.
Choose: The stuff's definitely all old.
Vyrn: Yeah, I can tell. Look at all that rust.
Continue 1
Darydara: Hmmm... What does this one do?
Strange Woman: That, of course, is a piercing weapon. However, it was originally created and primarily used as a digging tool.
Darydara: I hear the Geonoid dug with their horns long ago. This must be what they used.
Darydara: How about this round thing?
Strange Woman: That would be an old navel piercing adorned by the prestigious noble Levleath.
Vyrn: You two seem to be hittin' it off.
Strange Woman: It's only natural that a man of your colossal stature has the clarity of mind to match! What a tremendous joy it is to chat with you!
Vyrn: I'm honestly surprised you're into this stuff.
Darydara: I knew a guy who'd always bring me exotic souvenirs from his travels here and there, so I'm used to it.
Strange Woman: My enormous friend, normally I wouldn't be allowed to do this, but... let me show you a special something...
The lady runs out and heaves herself back with a gigantic item in tow.
Darydara: What's that?
Strange Woman: I'm glad... you asked! It's a crown that was worn by the titans of yore! It's gorgeous, isn't it? One of a kind!
Vyrn: All it looks like to me is a huge piece of scrap metal...
Strange Woman: And just for you, big sir, I have an offer of a lifetime! I'm willing to sell this massive diadem!
Vyrn: In what world would we ever need that?
Strange Woman: All right then, you simply need to sign this contract right here, and it's yours to keep—but you have to act fast!
Vyrn: Why're you so pushy?
Vyrn: Anyway, this is clearly some sort of scam! You're way too obvious!
Darydara: Hm... There's a mistake in this contract.
Vyrn: Now's not the time to be reading!
Strange Woman: That's right. The details can wait! It's just your everyday boring legal text to cover our bases! All you need to do is sign! Here, use this pen!
Darydara: I'll correct the mistake first. I wouldn't want to run into problems later...
Strange Woman: Thank you so much for the revision! I'll approve it with my own signature and... there! All done! Now then, it's your turn to sign!
Darydara: I haven't read the other pages yet though...
Strange Woman: Why would a big guy like yourself bother with the trivialities? Skip the reading—it's for the small-minded folks!
Darydara: Wait, you're right!
Vyrn: Stop agreeing with her! Besides, even if she's right...
Darydara: There! I signed the contract—like the honest man I am!
Vyrn: Ugh...
The woman snatches the signed contract out of Darydara's hands, swiftly inserts it into an envelope, then seals it with some wax.
Strange Woman: And that's that! It was a pleasure doing business with you! Thank you very much!
Vyrn: H-hey... Shouldn't you at least ask how much it is?
Darydara: Oh, right. So what do I owe you?
Store Manager: Hi, I'm the head manager here. Let me ring you up.
Store Manager: For the antique crown... that'll be ten million rupies! We only accept lump-sum payments! Nyahaha!
Vyrn: So it really was a scam!
Assistant Manager: As the assistant manager, allow me to explain. You have no proof that this is a scam—which makes it perfectly legal.
Vyrn: What're you talkin' about! You basically forced him to sign the contract. How could that possibly be legal!
Head Guard: Oh, but it is. As head of the town guard, I see no problem with this transaction.
Darydara: Huh? When did you show up?
Store Manager: Are you deaf? He's our town's head guard—who happens to be a friend of mine. Isn't that right?
Vyrn: Y-you're obviously just bribin' him with a cut of the money...
Store Manager: Again with the accusations. Do you have any proof?
Assistant Manager: Before we sue you for defamation, how about you pay us the agreed amount in the contract? You did, after all, sign it.
Head Guard: We have your signature, which makes the contract binding. Failure to pay would be a breach of law. Pony up the money or go to jail—the choice is yours.
Vyrn: Hngh...
Darydara: ...
Store Manager: It's the red-headed runt's fault for jumping the gun and not reading the contract! Nyahahahahaha!
Vyrn: Hrngh!
Darydara: Sigh... The only one here jumping the gun is you.
Store Manager: Huh?
Darydara: Let me ask you one question—have you given the contract a thorough read?
Gotta Be Big!: Scene 4
After his edit is revealed to have changed the payment date, the scammers attack and are handily defeated―excluding the woman, who Darydara realized was a victim herself. Later, he meets Caeser at a ramen shop and explains that he recognized their methods as those of a group he'd brought down while working for Caesar. Caeser praises his ability to catch the smallest of details, much to Darydara's chagrin.
Store Manager: Have I read the contract, you say? Haha, isn't it a bit late to be asking that?
Darydara: I recall mentioning that I found a mistake.
Darydara: You over there. Do you remember what it was?
Strange Woman: M-me? No, not really...
Darydara: That's what I thought. Your employee manual probably said to hurry through a contract as quickly as possible.
Darydara: It's fine though. I'll remind you. The part that I "fixed" was a date.
Vyrn: A date?
Darydara: I revised it, then signed my name. The saleswoman also gave her written approval, which means both parties agreed to the change. It's all perfectly legal.
Darydara: My date of payment is set to one thousand years from today!
Store Manager: Wh-what! You're lying! Enough with the excuses!
Darydara: The proof is right there. If you think I'm bluffing, you're free to check for yourself.
Head Guard: Hey, if what he's saying is true, this is really bad for us...
Store Manager: Give me that!
The store manager grabs the envelope out of his employee's hands, unseals it, then removes the contract inside.
Store Manager: There's no way... This is a complete scam!
Darydara: Like you're one to talk.
Vyrn: Wow, Darydara! You've totally turned the tables on them!
Store Manager: You stupid woman! Look at what you've done! How are you gonna pay us back now? Tell me!
Strange Woman: W-wait, I was just following the manual...
Store Manager: Shut up, you idiot!
Store Manager: Punish her!
Assistant Manager: Hmph!
With a swing of his hammer, Darydara deflects the assistant manager's attempt to punch the female employee.
Darydara: C'mon, stop being so petty.
Darydara: Hey, you. They tricked you into some ridiculous debt and are forcing you to work to pay it off, isn't that right?
Strange Woman: Y-yeah. It happened right after I came to this town following the Grand Uplift. But how did you know?
Darydara: I bet they told you something like "the rules of business are different in the Sky Realm," right? The old line was "different in this skydom."
Darydara: Anyway, I'll leave it at that. I suggest cutting those two out of your life.
Strange Woman: But I owe them ten million rupies...
Darydara: Those scumbags don't deserve a single rupie from you. If they come knocking about the law, I know someone who'll handle them.
Darydara: He can be pig-headed at times, but he's accommodating when it counts. If you testify to him, he'll be sure to lock them behind bars—and that's if they're lucky.
Strange Woman: Okay, I'll do it.
Store Manager: Shut up already, you damn runt!
Vyrn: Hey, what do you think you're doing!
Store Manager: We're done here—the deal's off! Kill these fools!
Vyrn: Darydara! You okay?
Darydara: Twice...
Store Manager: Huh?
Darydara: Not once, but twice—two whole times. How dare you call...
Darydara: A beast of a man like myself a runt!
Store Manager: Hey! What do you think you're—
Darydara: Hngh!
Store Manager: Blegh!
Vyrn: I guess we were worryin' over nothing.
Assistant Manager: What's a runt like you going to—
Assistant Manager: Urgh!
Head Guard: A runt could never—
Head Guard: Argh!
Darydara: Three... Four... You looked down on me four times! Listen up!
Darydara: I am Darydara, and there's no greater man than me!
A few days later, at a restaurant in Winseria...
Caesar: Hehe... Heh heh heh... Haha!
Darydara: What are you laughing at?
Caesar: Sorry, I couldn't help myself. So you're saying you captured the two criminals in a fit of rage, then brought them back to this island?
Darydara: That's right. Hmph, just thinking about it makes me mad all over again!
Caesar: And you're feeling down because you ended up counting the number of times they called you a runt?
Darydara: Nobody's feeling down. I just thought that wasn't very manly of me.
Caesar: Well, cheer up. Look, our food's ready.
Without a word, the chef places some bowls of ramen before the two.
Darydara: Oh, it's finally here. Time to dig in.
Darydara: Slurp...
Caesar: How is it? One of the senior town officials brought me here the other day.
Caesar: It should taste good enough to keep that mouth of yours shut.
Darydara: The flavors really are something. To think there'd be such a famous restaurant in Winseria of all places. I'm impressed.
Caesar: Hehe, as you should be.
Darydara: Everyone here seems to be treating you pretty nicely too.
Caesar: Oh... Are they really?
Darydara: I never imagined I'd see the day when the White Knight would play the role of the beloved new employee. Still, I'm glad things worked out in your favor.
Caesar: On another note, I've identified the organization of those scammers you arrested.
Darydara: I was right, wasn't I?
Caesar: Yes, they used to be part of the crime syndicate I ordered you, my right-hand man, to investigate a few years ago.
Darydara: That was a huge hassle. At the end of the day, I managed to crush them, but I didn't think there'd be any stragglers.
Caesar: The scammers seemed to be low-level grunts. Just cogs in the machine that was the former criminal group.
Caesar: But that raises the question—how did you know?
Darydara: Easy. They used the same tricks.
Caesar: Tricks?
Darydara: It's scamming. The only difference is the guy I was in charge of investigating was a smuggler involved in trafficking.
Darydara: I made sure to look into every single related party, then organized all the info down to the tiniest detail. That's why I remember...
Darydara: The tiniest detail...
Caesar: Darydara.
Darydara: E-enough! You heard nothing!
Caesar: You never did lose track of so much as a bean.
Darydara: Damn it! That's the opposite of big and bold!
Darydara drops his head onto the counter and lets out a disappointed groan.
Caesar: I meant it as a compliment.
Thoroughly enjoying the moment with his friend, Caeser can only smile.
