Darkness Sees Light

Upon learning that the end goal of (Captain)'s journey is to have a family reunion, the curious Fediel asks Ferdia and Chulainn if they'd like to see their parents too. Just then, news arrives of a pregnant woman about to give birth—a sight that Fediel would very much like to see.

The crew continues on its journey to the ends of the skies.
One idle day, they relish in teatime aboard the Grandcypher.
Vyrn: Mm! I can't get enough of these cookies!
Lyria: Yesterday's client gave them to us! They're supposed to be from a famous bakery on that island!
Vyrn: Oh yeah? With cookies this good, it's no surprise they're famous.
Fediel: That sounds like a taste worth knowing. Hand me a cookie!
Fediel: Nom... As delectable as the cookies on Alster were, I must say these are... Munch...
Vyrn: Whoa! You're hoggin' all the cookies! Save some for the rest of us!
Vyrn: W-wait a sec!
Vyrn: What are you even doing here!
Fediel: Chomp... Gulp. Girl in Blue, where can I find the tea!
Lyria: Oh right! We need to bring out the cups.
Vyrn: Sheesh... What are ya here for this time?
Fediel: The Erune lass is too preoccupied with other matters to regale me with her stories. I thought I'd kill some time here.
Vyrn: You came all the way from Alster Island just for that? I dunno if I should be impressed, or if I should be face-palmin'...
Lyria: Ahaha, Fediel could probably teleport to Estalucia right this instant if she wanted to...
Fediel: Ah yes, I'm reminded that Estalucia is your destination, Singularity.
Fediel: But why seek it out to begin with? I suppose it is a curious place, for one thing.
Vyrn: We're gonna reunite with (Captain)'s dad there!
Fediel: Your dad... One half of the dyad that passed on the torch to you. Is there any reason you must see him?
(Captain) is puzzled at Fediel's confusion.
Vyrn: We haven't seen the guy for ages! Of course we wanna see him!
Vyrn: Besides, the old man wrote in a letter that he's waitin' for us in Estalucia!
Fediel: Hm?
Hoping to relieve some of her confusion, (Captain) offers another reason.
Fediel: You want to take care of any business that might get in the way of you living out your days with the girl in blue and the red dragon?
Fediel: Ah yes! That makes perfect sense! You're doubly blessed when it comes to dyads!
Vyrn: I've said it before, but you've got the wrong idea about—
Fediel: There's no need to be bashful! You've satisfied both my palate and my curiosity today.
Fediel: I woud imagine the Erune lass has a bit of free time now. Time to head back.
Lyria: Ah! There she goes.
Vyrn: I don't think she got my last point. And I still dunno what she came for...
Fediel had come and gone like a storm, leaving the crew in a bit of a daze.
Fediel: The Erune lass has yet to return, I see.
Seeing that Miach's room is unoccupied, Fediel lets out a disappointed sigh.
Chulainn: Ah, Fediel! You weren't here earlier. Did you go for a walk?
Fediel: Yes, I paid a quick visit to the singularity's crew. They mentioned some curious things.
Ferdia: What's a singularity?
Fediel: Dragonewt lass. Do you wish to see your father?
Chulainn: Huh? My father?
Chulainn: Um... Not really, I guess?
Fediel: As I thought. Once the torch has been passed down, the two generations are separate.
Fediel: Yet the singularity's tone suggested otherwise...
Ferdia: I mean, if you get along with your parents, wanting to see them sounds like a pretty normal thing to me...
Fediel: Hm, I'll have to ask the Erune lass as well. I never tire of her explanations!
Ferdia: Wait up, Fediel!
Ferdia: (That's not the kind of question you ask of someone who just lost their dad... Then again...)
Ferdia: (Fediel wouldn't understand if I mentioned it outright. How do I put this...)
Fediel: If you have something to say, then say it.
Ferdia: Um...
Miach: Ferdia! Are you in here?
Ferdia: Lady Miach! What's wrong?
Miach: A woman taking refuge at the Great Court is about to give birth!
Miach: The attendants there could use another pair of hands. Could you please go help them? They're in the west wing!
Ferdia: Okay, I'll be right there!
Fediel: What was that about?
Miach: Ah... A child's about to be born.
Fediel: A mortal baby, you say! The offspring of a dyad!
Fediel: Where in the west wing is this happening? I must witness the moment of its birth with my own eyes!
Chulainn: Fediel, wait! People aren't supposed to just barge into the maternity room!

Darkness Sees Light: Scene 2

While waiting outside the maternity room, Fediel learns from Miach what a laborious process childbirth can be. She gets a chance to hold the baby later that night and is shocked by how frail it is.

Ferdia: The boiled water's ready! I'll leave the pot here!
Attendant's Voice: Thank you! Do you think you can bring us some extra bedsheets and towels?
Ferdia: Of course—I'll be right back! Chulainn, can you help?
Chulainn: Coming! Fediel, make sure you wait outside with Lady Miach!
Fediel: Fine, fine.
Attendant: Okay now. Hrgh...
Fediel: How inconsiderate. He should have just brought the pot inside.
Miach: Actually, that was Ferdia's way of being considerate. Only a select few are allowed inside the room.
Miach: Sanitation is part of it, but the main reason is so that the expectant mother doesn't have to worry about prying eyes.
Fediel: Hm... Come to think of it, even beasts in the wild do not gather around to witness a childbirth.
Fediel: This seems to be taking an extraordinary amount of time and effort, however. Has a problem arisen?
Miach: This is quite normal actually. Simply preparing for childbirth can take up to half a day.
Fediel: Half a day?
Fediel: That's an absurd amount of time just to pop out a tiny mortal!
Miach: It depends on the person. Though not many are able to get through the process so quickly.
Miach: There are even some who might feel the baby coming but aren't able to push it out until days later.
Fediel: Meaning you'd have to watch the mother during that entire time?
Fediel: To be on high alert, ready to act at a moment's notice—for days on end?
Miach: Yes. Childbirth is a tremendous burden on the mother.
Miach: Any complications not immediately addressed during that critical period could jeopardize the lives of both mother and child.
Miach: What's more is that unlike with the typical injury or sickness, we cannot rely too much on medicine or magic.
Miach: To ensure that both lives are saved, we need the cooperation of a lot of people.
Fediel: Hm... So that's how it works, huh...
Fediel: Not being able to rely on medicine or magic couldn't be more inconvenient.
Miach: It is only after overcoming all those hardships that new lives are born into this world.
Miach: It just goes to show what a blessing it is for everyone when a new baby is born.
Fediel: It's lot more interesting when you put it that way.
Fediel: The wait to witness the moment of the torch changing hands grows painful!
Miach: As I said earlier, there's no telling when exactly the baby will come out...
Fediel: Yes, I understand that! I suppose it's only a fleeting moment for me compared to how the wait must feel for mortals.
Fediel: I welcome this chance to exercise my patience.
Miach: Even a moment's delay can present a grave risk.
Miach: Please do no more than watch today, Fediel. That's all I ask.
Fediel: Hrm... I'll keep it in mind.
Attendant: Lady Miach! Can I ask you for a pain relief spell?
Miach: I'll be right there!
Fediel: Mortals, being as frail as they are, must also care for their own flame when passing the torch.
Fediel: It's truly a miracle that the Sky Realm has survived for as long as it has...
Even by nightfall, the child is yet to be delivered. Chulainn and Ferdia are napping outside the room in case anything should happen.
Chulainn: Zzz...
Ferdia: ...
Fediel: No movement since the Erune lass entered the room...
Fediel: Is a child really due to be born soon?
Fediel: Yawn...
The terrific yawn that escapes the bored Fediel's lips is immediately accompanied by another sound.
Chulainn: Huh? Someone's... crying?
Ferdia: ...!
That must be the baby!
Fediel: Is that truly the wailing of a child?
Fediel: I must witness this passing of the torch for myself!
Miach: Ferdia! Chulainn!
Ferdia: Lady Miach! How are the mother and child?
Miach: The child is perfectly healthy, as you can see.
Miach's expression remains stern despite the newborn baby in his arms.
Chulainn: And the mother?
Miach: Not well. But with the baby delivered, healing magic should have a greater effect now. I'll be helping with that as well.
Miach: Can you please hold the baby and keep it warm until the next attendant comes?
Ferdia: Yes! Of course.
Chulainn: Lady Miach, the mother's waiting!
Miach: Right!
Fediel: What a busy night. The torch has been passed, but the commotion persists.
Fediel: Anyhow, it's time I got a chance to touch the child!
Chulainn: Shh! Keep it down a bit, Fediel!
Fediel: Did I cause the baby to cry?
Ferdia: It must've been surprised to suddenly hear such a loud voice. There, there...
Fediel: The tiny mortal exhibits a great range of motion, still one moment and wailing the next.
The baby, resting in Ferdia's arms, has its cheek poked by Fediel.
Chulainn: You have to be more gentle with it!
Fediel: Hrm...
Ferdia: There's no way I'm handing you the baby like this. You want to fully support its head and hold its back like this. And most importantly, be gentle.
Fediel: Gah, so much to keep track of... Very well.
Fediel: I will not stop the wind from blowing today—a pointless endeavor. If what you say is mortal tradition, then I shall follow it.
After diligently listening to Ferdia's detailed explanation in its entirety, Fediel extends both hands to the baby.
Chulainn: Gently now! Gently!
Fediel: Yes, of course... Gently...
Fediel: ...!
Fediel: My goodness... I never imagined mortal children to be so soft and brittle!
Fediel: It feels as if the baby could scatter into the wind like silk floss...
Chulainn: It's crying again!
Fediel: Take it! Take the baby from me!
Ferdia: Did you not want to hold it a bit more?
Fediel: It's fine! Quick!
Ferdia: Okay then.
There, there. Your mom's doing her best, so just hang in there, okay?
Fediel: Phew...
Ferdia: Are you okay?
Fediel: Y-yeah...
Fediel gazes downward, the sensation of the baby still lingering in her arms.
Fediel: So that's... how...
Chulainn: Lady Miach!
Miach: No more worries. The mother's blood flow is back to normal. Everything's okay now.
Chulainn: Hooray! It's a beautiful start for this new family!
Chulainn grins from ear to ear at the baby in Ferdia's arms.
Attendant: Ferdia, Chulainn, thank you for your help.
Attendant: The midwife will be watching over the mother, so I'll bring the baby to them. Thanks again!
Ferdia: Great work on your part too! I'm glad we could help!
Ferdia: Well, I guess that matter's taken care of.
Chulainn: Phew... I'm relieved but also feeling extra sleepy now.
Miach: Haha, rest up, everyone. You deserve it.
Ferdia: Thank you. That goes for you too, Lady Miach.
Ferdia: Come, Chulainn. I'll piggyback you if you're that tired.
Chulainn: Yawn... Good night, Lady Miach.
Miach: Mm, good night.
Miach: Whew...
Fediel: ...
Miach: Fediel.
Fediel: Oh! Yes?
Miach: You could probably use some rest yourself. Why don't we continue our discussions tomorrow?
Fediel: Yes... Let's do that.
Miach: Back to the room then.
Fediel: Mm...
Fediel: (Mortals come into the world so thin, light, and feeble.)
Fediel: (As if they'd disappear with a puff of wind. To be willing to put your own life in danger so that you may give birth to something so frail...)
Fediel: I may never understand...

Darkness Sees Light: Scene 3

A conversation with the mother of the newborn baby offers Fediel new understanding of why mortals risk so much to bring new life into the world.

Attendant: Patty-pat. Let's go say hello to your mother.
The following morning, the rested mother finally gets to see her child.
Mother: Thank goodness... My baby's okay...
Attendant: Mm-hm, a very healthy baby at that. There's nothing to worry about anymore.
Attendant: Rest easy with your child. I'll be back later to make sure everything's okay.
Mother: Thank you so much for all your help.
Attendant: We help each other when we're in need—that's what the community's for! Feel free to call for me if anything comes up.
Mother: Okay...
Mother: What a cute child... Haha, you have his eyes...
Fediel: Lass.
Mother: Aiiee!
Mother: You surprised me... How long have you been there?
Fediel: I have something to ask you.
Mother: ...
The mother clutches her child close in a protective gesture, but it lets out a joyous yelp.
Fediel: Good day, child! Maybe you remember me from earlier! Have you had any milk yet?
Mother: ...
Mother: (I didn't know what to expect, but she doesn't seem like a bad person after all...)
Fediel: Hm, you seem livelier now than when I held you. A good sign.
Mother: Um... What did you want to ask me?
Fediel: Knowing the risks involved in childbirth, why did you decide to go through with it anyway?
Mother: Huh?
Fediel: Is it not dangerous for the mother to have a child? I'd heard you nearly died.
Fediel: You were willing to breathe new life into the world in exchange for your own. Where does that strength of will come from?
Mother: ...
Mother: Interesting... question...
Fediel: ...
Mother: The child's father, my husband, died in the recent war.
Fediel: Oh?
Mother: I told myself that no matter what, I wanted my baby to see the future of the island that he gave his life protecting.
Fediel: Hm...
Fediel: Do mortals not raise their children as mother and father?
Fediel: If one half of the dyad has perished, is it not safer to find someone else to complete your dyad and have a child with?
Mother: Being blessed with a baby in the womb is not a simple matter, even though losing one is...
Mother: No, let me rephrase that... All lives are precious, yet they are so easily lost.
Mother: Like my husband's...
Trying to hold in the tears that well up, she gently rocks the baby as she continues.
Mother: There is risk not only in pregnancy and childbirth, but in every facet of our lives. From accidents to sickness... Even I could suddenly pass away without warning.
Mother: Once you look past that though, there's so much joy and beauty to be found in the world. And I want my child to see that.
Mother: Nothing would make me happier than to have my child experience everything the world has to offer. I'm sure my husband would say the same if he were here.
Fediel: You say that knowing how frail the baby is, and that it's missing one parent?
Fediel: What of the chances that the baby passes before it can grow to experience all the joy and beauty that you speak of?
Mother: While it's true that a baby may breathe its last at the slightest mishap...
Mother: The same goes for me, the baby's mother—albeit to a lesser extent.
Fediel: Exactly. Then why—
Mother: However... Even if I were to perish, I have no doubt that the people of Alster Island would work together to raise the child in my stead.
Mother: Lost, weak, young children with no one to turn to... Surely there's a place for them too in Alster. Or at least there will be.
Mother: I trust in the people of my homeland, of my child's homeland.
Fediel: ...
Miach: Finding a mate and producing offspring with them is a respectable endeavor, but that's just one way to live a life.
Miach: Watching over all the children in the land, regardless of blood relations, is another.
Miach: It'd certainly be an effective method of passing on the culture of those who came before us.
Fediel: I'm reminded of the Erune lass's words that day...
Fediel: So this is what it means to pass down one's culture...
Mother: I hope that answers your question.
Fediel: Yes. You've given me a new perspective on things!
Fediel: Now I understand why Deirdre's always fought so hard to protect this island...
Mother: We are greatly indebted to Deirdre. She's done so much for us.
Mother: And... that goes for you too.
Mother: In a way, every single one of us serves as a link in a chain, working together to build a brighter future for tomorrow's children.
Fediel: Hm?
Mother: We all have so much to gain from everyone we cross paths with and get to know in our lives.
Mother: Just as I'm sure the child's meeting with you today will forever be a blessing.
Fediel: ...
Fediel: In that case, I will be praying that a favorable wind blows in the baby's direction.
Fediel: Blessings upon you and your child.
Fediel plants a kiss on the foreheads of both mother and child.
Fediel: Just like Galleon...
Fediel: I appreciate the discussion. Rest well so that you may tend to your child.
Mother: Thank you, miss. Blessings upon you as well.
Fediel: ...

Darkness Sees Light: Scene 4

By having a chat with Chulainn about the meaning of family, Fediel comes to understand why (Captain) yearns for a family reunion. She then pledges her support for the captain's journey.

Fediel: ...
Mother: And... that goes for you too.
Mother: In a way, every single one of us serves as a link in a chain, working together to build a brighter future for tomorrow's children.
Fediel: The winds of change never stop blowing...
Fediel:
Chulainn: What's wrong, Fediel? Are you not well?
Fediel: Ah! Dragonewt lass. My mind was occupied with the thought of family.
Chulainn: Family?
Chulainn: That reminds me: you asked me before if I wanted to see my dad.
Fediel: Yes, do you have a different answer now?
Chulainn: Well, I've been thinking about it, and...
Chulainn: It's okay if I don't get to see my parents, but I wish I could see Grandpa again.
Fediel: Oh?
Chulainn: I mean, I don't even know who my parents are. So I've never thought about them...
Chulainn: But I think about Grandpa all the time. I really miss him.
Chulainn: He and Ferd raised me and taught me so much. We were a happy family...
Fediel: I see...
Fediel: There's so much more to family than just blood relations—there's everything passed down from parent to child and all the memories of good times spent together.
Fediel: I'm starting to understand why the singularity wishes for a family reunion.
Fediel: Yes, it's all coming together now!
Chulainn: Did I help?
Fediel: You certainly did! My curiosity is sated!
Chulainn: I'm not sure I understand, but I'm glad I could help!
Ferdia: Fediel! Oh, you're here too, Chulainn?
Fediel: Hm? You were looking for me?
Miach: I wanted to invite you to tea. We've acquired something really nice.
Fediel: Something really nice?
Chulainn: Ooh! What could that be, Lady Miach!
Ferdia: Tada!
Chulainn: Wait, isn't that...
Miach: Chocolate! The candy store in town is open for business again.
Miach: As a gesture of goodwill, the owner gave us a small sample of his goods at the Great Court.
Fediel: Chocolate, you say? Show me the contents of that box at once!
Ferdia: I'll set the table. You and Chulainn go wash your hands first!
Chulainn: I can have some too? Hooray!
Miach: Haha, I'm glad to see you so pleased. I'll pour the tea.
Miach: The tea's ready. Enjoy.
Fediel: At last! I've waited too long for this!
Ferdia: Fediel. Chocolate's still in short supply around here, so you'll want to savor every bite.
Ferdia: I suggest not chomping it all down in an instant like you did with the cookies and scones—
Fediel: Yes, yes! Enough about me already!
Miach: Haha. Let's do away with formalities and just enjoy ourselves for today.
Fediel: You see? Even the Erune lass does not mind. Out with the chocolate already!
Ferdia: Sigh... Here it is.
Ferdia places a box in the center of the table and opens it up, the sweet scent of its contents ticking everyone's noses.
Fediel: Ah, yes! Chocolate!
Chulainn: Wow! They look like decorations!
Fediel: Nom... The sweetness just melts on my tongue...
Fediel: Chomp... The whole thing just melted in my mouth! I can't stop eating!
Ferdia: Chulainn. Say, "Aaah."
Chulainn: Aaah!
Yum!
Miach: Haha...
Miach: (We have a lot of work to do until the townspeople can just sit back and relax with chocolates in hand like this...)
Fediel: What's the matter, Erune lass! Do you not want some too? Try doing that "ahh" thing!
Miach: Huh?
Miach: Oh. Aaahh...
Miach: It's delicious!
Chulainn: Mm-hm! Very!
While the garden has yet to be restored to its former beauty, it proves tidy enough for a tea party—a moment of reprieve for all.
Vyrn: So good!
Vyrn: You gotta try some of this candied apple for yourself, (Captain)!
Presented with the confection from a cheery Vyrn, (Captain) takes a bite from the opposite end.
Vyrn: Well? See what I mean?
Vyrn: Heheh, it's nice to be out and about with just the two of us!
Vyrn: Hanging out with everyone is cool too, but we've so many great memories to reminisce on when it's just us two!
Fediel: Ah yes, the sight of a dyad in bliss is one sight that never fails to impress!
Vyrn: Gah! Not you again!
Fediel: There's no need to be on guard. Don't mind me and go about your business like the dyad you are.
Vyrn: Look... I'm grateful to you that me and (Captain) can go on a date like this, but...
Vyrn: What are you here for today?
Fediel: Oh, I almost forgot! I have something to tell the singularity!
Fediel: I wish to see more of dyads and the things they pass on to the next generation.
Vyrn: Huh?
Fediel: To that end, you must succeed in your journey to Estalucia, Singularity!
Vyrn: You mean... you'll be cheerin' us on?
Fediel: In a way, yes. After all, my observation of dyads hinges greatly on your success, Singularity!
Vyrn: If you put it that way...
  1. Success might as well be my middle name!

Choose: Success might as well be my middle name!

Vyrn: Ooh yeah! Watch out, Estalucia—we're comin' to ya!
A glimmer of satisfaction crosses Fediel's face as she watches the two nod in agreement.
The Black of the Six Dragons then looks over the horizon, a tinge of compassion evident in her eyes.
