Medical Magic 101

Fif visits Tikoh for a medical magic lesson, but Tikoh mistakenly thinks she wants to become a doctor and hands her a massive textbook. After clearing up the confusion, they apologize and enjoy basking in the sun together.

One sunny day aboard the Grandcypher, Tikoh looks up at the clock in her office.
Tikoh: Ah, it's almost noon.
Setting aside the book she had been reading, she rises from her chair and steps into the hallway.
Tikoh then hangs a sign on the door that reads, "Closed for Lunch—Emergency Patients Only."
Tikoh: She should be arriving any minute now—
???: Knock, knock! Coming in!
Fif: Hi, Dr. Tikoh! I'm here for my magic lesson!
Tikoh: Welcome. You're right on time.
A few days prior, Tikoh had hurried to the site of a carriage accident to treat the injured, only to find Fif there helping as well.
Intrigued by Tikoh's magic, Fif had approached her for instruction.
Fif: That spell you used to pinpoint what was wrong inside their bodies was so cool! I've never seen anything like it!
Tikoh: That's because I developed it myself. A special light passes through the patient, using sand to draw a diagram of the affected part.
Fif: Ooh, gotcha. What comes next?
Tikoh: My, you certainly are eager to learn. I have to say, I'm impressed.
Tikoh: All right, let's begin with some hands-on practice. First, to create the light—
Fif: Oh, you don't have to explain that part. I've already got it down.
Fif looks at her own shadow on the floor, created by the sunlight streaming in from the window behind her.
Fif: Hmm, there's no sand around here. Wonder if this'll work instead?
As she waves her staff, a faint light appears within the shadow, forming the shape of a skeleton.
Fif: That's the general idea, right?
Tikoh: Amazing! You've already mastered it perfectly, application and all!
Tikoh: Come to think of it, your healing magic at the accident site was remarkable too. Just what I'd expect from one of the Eternals.
Fif: Hehe, of course! I'm the most powerful mage in the skies, after all!
Fif: But it kinda feels like something's missing. That spell just now only showed me what was inside the body.
Fif: So how do you tell what's actually wrong? If I can figure that out, I'll be able to help even more people who are in trouble.
Tikoh: (Incredible! All that magical talent, and such passion to boot... This is going to be a treat!)
Tikoh: Well, first of all, let me reassure you that there was absolutely nothing wrong with your magic.
Tikoh: That particular spell is just for seeing inside the body. Knowledge is required to actually diagnose the specific injury or condition.
Fif: Huh? Not magic, but knowledge?
Tikoh: That's right. You need to understand how the body works. Meaning... it all comes down to studying!
With this, Tikoh picks up an extraordinarily thick book from her desk and hands it to Fif.
Fif: Whoa! What is this? It's so heavy!
Tikoh: That's the beginner's medical textbook I used to read when I was younger.
Tikoh: Simply memorizing it straight will give you a basic grasp of the body. Plus, it's simple and easy to read.
At Tikoh's urging, Fif nervously cracks open the textbook.
Inside, she is met with a barrage of dense text so complex that even adults would struggle to decipher it.
Fif: Umm... Hmm...
Tikoh: Don't worry. If you come across anything you don't understand, I'll explain it to you.
Fif: ...
Tikoh: That's exactly how my parents taught me, so don't hesitate to ask for help.
Fif: ...
Tikoh: What's wrong?
Fif: I-I don't even understand what it is I don't understand...
Tikoh: ...
Fif: Maybe I just don't have what it takes to use medical magic...
Tikoh: No, that's not true at all. I assure you.
Tikoh: You have something even more important than magical talent for a doctor—the desire to save others.
Fif: A doctor?
Tikoh: All you're lacking is knowledge. As long as you study morning, noon, night, and even in your dreams, you'll get there.
Tikoh: I'm confident that you can become a doctor unlike any other. No—I'll make sure of it myself.
Fif: But... I don't wanna be a doctor.
Tikoh: What?
Tikoh: I thought you came to learn from me because you wanted to become a doctor in the future...
Fif: Nope. I just wanna learn all sorts of magic.
Fif: I mean, being a doctor someday might be fun in its own way. But I also like growing flowers...
Fif: Not to mention dyeing fabrics, cooking, sewing—and even just basking in the sun.
Fif: Basically, I'm still exploring my options for the future!
Tikoh: ...
Tikoh: I see. Yes, that makes sense.
Tikoh: I come from a long line of doctors myself. I've naturally been drawn to medicine since I was young, never really questioning my path.
Tikoh: Because of that, I made an assumption about you. I'm sorry.
Fif: Nah, I'm the one who should apologize.
Fif: I thought all I needed was a little training to use medical magic. I had no idea it was gonna be this hard.
Fif: No wonder doctors get so much respect. Being able to understand a book like this is super amazing.
Tikoh: Well, there's still some time left before my afternoon hours start. Since you're already here, is there anything else you'd like to do?
Tikoh: I'm happy to go along with anything you choose. Consider it my apology for jumping to conclusions earlier.
Fif: Really? Anything?
Fif shifts her gaze to stare intently at Tikoh's legs—or more precisely, her thighs.
Fif: You know, it's such a nice day out, I kinda feel like basking in the sun. Normally I'd do that on Grampy's lap, but...
Tikoh: But... what?
Fif: Can I sit on your lap today instead?
Tikoh: W-well, I did say it was an apology... And you're not staring because they're thick or anything... Fine, go ahead! No need to hold back!
Fif: Yay!
Fif directs Tikoh to the sunlit bed by the window and settles onto her lap.
Fif: Wow, I knew it! See, the truth is, I didn't just come to learn a new spell—I wanted to try out a new lap too!
Fif: Hehe. Yours is pretty small compared to Grampy's, but it's so soft and comfy!
Tikoh: S-small?
Tikoh: Heh. In other words, thin... Small and thin!
Fif: Hm? What's up?
Tikoh: Hehe... Oh, it's nothing. I was just thinking about how smart you are, Fif. You have a very promising future ahead of you.
Fif: Huh?
Having taken a great liking to Fif, Tikoh secretly resolves to find the little Harvin a book that she can actually enjoy reading.
