An Invitation to Excitement
Florence, after participating in a joint military exercise, receives from Tor an invitation to an event being hosted by one of Wales's most popular fashion designers. Though initially too worried about her own country to accept, she agrees to attend once Gawain points out that it would give their subordinates time to rest.
Some time has passed since Feendrache, Dalmore, and Wales formed their alliance.
The three countries have just finished conducting a joint military exercise in Wales to prepare for their eventual confrontation with the mysterious cabal.
Despite this being the first attempt at organizing such an event, all involved have come away feeling that they deeply improved their comradery and coordination.
Florence: Whew... I think that we can finally relax for a little while.
Gawain: You've been dedicating every waking moment to this thing from its conception to its conclusion. I really couldn't be more proud of you.
Florence: Oh my, praise from you, Gawain?
Florence: I wonder what that might portend. A sudden thunderstorm, perhaps?
Gawain: Hah, if only. We could use it as an excuse to put off our departure and rest for a day.
Gawain: After all, I need to stop you from working yourself into a coma one way or another.
Florence smiles, knowing that Gawain's brusque words come from a place of kindness.
Florence: In any case, I'm glad the participants were so enthusiastic and focused.
Gawain: Of course they were. Everyone understands how much of a threat the cabal poses to us.
Florence: I suppose that's true.
Gawain: Right then, let's assume that there won't be any unexpected thunderstorms and get ready for our trip home tomorrow.
Florence: Agreed. I'll—
Gawain: You'll sit down and rest. You've been working too hard.
Florence: But aren't you just as tired, Gawain?
Gawain: Hah. Maybe if I'd spent my life with a wand in my hand instead of an axe. You don't need to worry about me.
Florence: Well, I suppose that I'll take you up on your offer then.
Gawain: Glad to hear it.
Just as Gawain turns to leave, someone knocks on the door.
Tor's Voice: Are you here, Lady Florence?
Florence: Is that you, Tor?
Florence opens the door to find Tor standing on the other side with his usual smile.
Tor: Allow me to preface this meeting by offering my sincerest gratitude.
Tor: It's largely due to your efforts that this endeavor went off without a hitch.
Florence: Oh, you flatter me. It was thanks to everyone, especially you.
Tor: Oh no, I certainly can't claim any credit. Lord Aglovale and Sir Lancelot did much more—
Gawain: Can you two stop being humble and get to the point?
Tor: Yes, I suppose that I should. My apologies.
Florence: And I shouldn't be keeping you outside on your feet. Please, come in.
As Tor enters the room, Florence gasps at the sight of the ornate envelope in his hand.
Florence: Is that the emblem of...
Tor: Indeed it is. You're as perceptive as always, Lady Florence.
Gawain is taken aback to see his sister enthralled by the emblem on the envelope.
Gawain: What is that, an invitation or something? Who's it from, Tor?
Tor: Yes, it is. It's from Wales's most popular fashion designer.
Gawain: Fashion designer? I've never seen you take an interest in fashion before, Florence.
Florence: Oh? Perhaps you haven't noticed, but I've always got style on the mind.
Florence: Unfortunately, the looks that I like don't really match my age these days...
Florence: Ahem. Returning to the topic at hand...
Florence: I happened to encounter a dress made by this designer on a previous visit to Wales.
Florence: Its refined silhouette, the sense of elegance it exuded...
Florence: Oh, and I can't forget how implausibly beautiful the flower embroidery was!
Florence: I'd never been so moved by something before in my life!
Gawain: Incredible. Your passion for the subject has you gushing...
Gawain: I really didn't expect to be discovering a new side to you today.
Florence: Afterwards I brought it up in a conversation with Tor. I'm honored that you remembered.
Tor: With your love of fashion in mind, I was hoping to use this as an opportunity for a cultural exchange.
Gawain: So you snagged an invitation to an event hosted by that designer. Clever.
Gawain: I guess I should expect no less of the man Aglovale chose as his confidant. You're so competent that it's creeping me out a little.
However, as Florence reads the letter, her expression becomes clouded.
Florence: ...
Tor: Is something wrong, Lady Florence?
Florence: Well, I would certainly be very interested in attending this reveal of his newest dress...
Florence: But I'm afraid we'll be leaving for Dalmore before the event tomorrow evening...
Gawain: Are you really going to give up just like that? The man went out of his way to get you an invitation.
Gawain: We can plan for that thunderstorm tomorrow and delay our departure for a day.
Florence: No, we still have the cabal to worry about. We should get back to Dalmore as soon as possible to prepare for their next move.
Gawain shakes his head at Florence's assertion.
Gawain: Now that I know how much you care about fashion, I can't just let you walk away from this.
Florence: I really shouldn't have shown you that side of me... I'm regretting it deeply right now.
Gawain: You should be more open with your feelings, Florence.
Florence: You're one to talk!
Gawain: Rgh... You're right about that, but you should still rethink this. You're not the only one who would benefit, after all.
Gawain: Ever since we started dealing with the cabal, the knights and sorcerers have been on edge nonstop.
Gawain: At this rate, everybody's going to fall apart before it's time to fight.
Gawain: We should use this as an opportunity to give them a day to relax.
Florence bites her lip, recognizing the truth of his statement and growing frustrated that she hadn't thought of it herself.
Florence: You're absolutely right. I lost sight of something important in my concern for our country.
Gawain: Good to see you've finally figured it out. You're too stubborn for your own good.
Florence: I'm your sister, after all. It seems I couldn't avoid sharing some of your traits.
Gawain: Hah, not willing to admit you were wrong without some snark, are you?
Florence: And you would?
Gawain: All right, all right, you've got me. You win.
Florence: Hehe. That aside, I'm ashamed that I couldn't see the good this would do until you pointed it out to me.
Florence: Not to mention the fact that I was about to put Tor's goodwill to waste. Why, that could have put our whole alliance in jeopardy!
Tor: Indeed, Lady Florence, I'm glad to see you make the heroic decision necessary to maintain our diplomatic ties.
Gawain: Well, I hope you two jokers have fun.
Florence: What are you talking about, Gawain? You're coming too.
Gawain: Huh? What could you possibly need me at a dress reveal for?
Florence: Learning more about Wales's fashion isn't the only benefit to be had.
Florence: This is a perfect chance for you to get more friendly with Tor.
Gawain: What?
Tor: I feel the same way, Lord Gawain. Let us go together and deepen our friendship.
Gawain: Tsk... No way out, huh? I was hoping to get some relaxation in myself, but I guess that it wasn't meant to be.
Gawain: All right, fine, I'll go with you!
With that, Florence and Gawain decide to delay their return to Dalmore by a day and attend the party.
That night, Florence is pacing back and forth, lost in thought.
Florence: Hmm... Well, there's no point thinking about this any more on my own.
Florence: Let's see what wisdom our resident fashionable sorceress can impart.
Sorceress: A dress to wear to the party? That certainly is a difficult question...
Florence: We came here for the military exercise, so I didn't really bring anything appropriate.
Seeing Florence look concerned, the sorceress flashes a confident smile.
Sorceress: Fortunately, I don't think we need to worry about that.
Florence: Oh?
Sorceress: You have the outfit that you're wearing right now—our uniform.
Sorceress: It's both elegant and incredibly well designed.
Sorceress: I really don't see any reason that you couldn't attend as you are right now.
Florence: Well, if you of all people say so, then I think I can feel confident doing that. Thank you very much.
Florence: It's not like I'm offering this in exchange, but are you free tomorrow? If you are, I would love to have you come along too.
Sorceress: Really? Oh, I'd absolutely love to!
Florence and the fashionable sorceress go on to talk at length about fashion, their excitement for the party growing the whole time.
