Fylkis, Magishell Engineer

The crew stop by a village on a remote island to replenish their water supply. When a villager learns that Fylkis—an earthdweller—is among them, he asks her to take a look at something.

After stopping by Ressortir, the crew continue their journey toward Kreshstein.
Though previous route maps are of little help now due to the Grand Uplift, the past few days of travel have been smooth sailing.
Vyrn: I mean, it's not great, but it's not that bad either...
Lyria: Right, but still...
Fylkis: Hm?
Fylkis: What are you two talking about? Is something the matter?
Vyrn: Ah, well... We're not exactly in huge trouble or anything.
Vyrn: It's just, weavin' around those huge rocks and islands that got kicked up by the Grand Uplift slows us down more than you'd think.
Lyria: And when those little delays start to add up, I worry about our water supply...
Fylkis: I see. Running out of water would be a serious problem.
Lyria: We should be okay, but I can't help worrying a little.
Vyrn: Yeah, and whatever tiny islands along the way aren't likely to have much to share for a ship this big.
Vyrn: Anyway, like Lyria said... We oughta be able to make it... Just barely, though.
Fylkis: Hmm... I'm reminded of a story told among earthdwellers.
Vyrn: Yeah?
Fylkis: There's a region where caves twist together like a spider's web. Dried-up corpses are found there in droves.
Fylkis: They must have wandered in search of water... You can see marks where they clawed at their own throats.
Vyrn: H-hey... Don't scare us like that! Fine, we'll make a pit stop, all right?
Lyria: Y-yeah! Resupplying is important!
(Captain) and the others check the map, decide on a route, and head for an island where they can refill their water.
Easygoing Islander: Yep, yep! Water, eh? There's a well if you go in to the right from here and head further in.
Easygoing Islander: Our village has plenty of drinking water. So long as you draw it yourselves, you're free to take as much as you need.
Lyria: What a relief! Thank you so much!
Easygoing Islander: You know, we were pretty shook up by the Grand Uplift, but... I guess you skyfarers really have it rough.
Vyrn: Yeah, we can't just follow the old routes anymore.
Easygoing Islander: I'd believe it, seein' how some of those rocks that floated up are basically the size of a small island.
Easygoing Islander: Even in our village, we've been talking about how we should remap the local routes or even the regular ferry will have trouble.
Lyria: Redrawing airship route maps sounds like a lot of work...
Easygoing Islander: Sure is, but just imagine how much harder it must be for earthdwellers.
Fylkis: Huh?
Easygoing Islander: Suddenly ending up in a different world can't be an easy thing to go through.
Fylkis: Yes... true. But fortunately, I've gotten so much help from skydwellers.
Easygoing Islander: Glad to hear it! Here's hopin' skydwellers and earthdwellers can learn to get along all right.
Foreman: Heeey!
Foreman: Is it true we've got an earthdweller here?
Fylkis: What now?
Fylkis: You must be referring to me. I'm a Levleath.
Foreman: Wow, it's my first time meeting someone from the Earthen Realm! Hello there, miss.
Fylkis: Hello. Is it me specifically, or people of the Earthen Realm in general that you have business with?
Foreman: Hey, listen! There's something I'd like you to take a look at!
Fylkis: What might that be?

Fylkis, Magishell Engineer: Scene 2

Presented with a magishell, Fylkis offers to perform maintenance on it. Two village children overhear that it might be gifted to Fylkis, but they intend to play with it first.

Foreman: No earthdwellers surfaced on this island, but a lot of giant rocks did...
Foreman: So now we need to level the land, which we've been working on bit by bit.
Fylkis: I see.
Foreman: There was some weird thing mixed in with the rocks that came up though...
Fylkis: Some weird thing?
Foreman: How should I put it... Hm, a chunk of metal? No, it'll be faster if you just see it.
Foreman: Could you come take a look?
Fylkis: S-sure...
Fylkis and company are led by the islander to an area where land leveling is underway.
Foreman: There it is, this thing!
Fylkis's eyes light up at the "chunk of metal" the foreman points to.
Fylkis: Oh, it's a magishell! This model might be a first for me.
Vyrn: Yeah? I'm pretty sure we saw one that looked just like this before though...
Fylkis: It might look similar at a glance, but from my perspective, it's completely different.
Fylkis: I wonder what type this one is!
Foreman: Oh, so it really is an earthdweller tool! I mean, I've never seen such a thing before, so I had no idea what it was.
Fylkis: It must have been carried up here by the Grand Uplift when its owner wasn't nearby.
Fylkis: Though I don't know if it's still functional. It might've been damaged from the impact...
Fylkis: If you'd like, I could do maintenance on the magishell.
Foreman: Oh! Miss, you've got the know-how for that?
Fylkis: Yes, but it might take a bit of time... I'd end up making my crewmates wait.
Lyria: We'll go draw some water while you're doing maintenance!
Vyrn: Sounds like a plan!
Fylkis: Hmm...
Vyrn: What is it?
Fylkis: Well, if drawing water counts as a skyfarer's job, then I kind of want to try it too.
Lyria: Haha! You're so eager to learn, Fylkis!
Fylkis: W-well... I want to contribute to the crew at least a little...
Fylkis: It's about lunchtime, so why don't you all go eat first?
Fylkis: I'll handle the maintenance while you're gone. In fact, I'd prefer that.
Lyria: N-no, Fylkis! You need to eat a proper meal too!
Fylkis: But...
Foreman: She's right—food comes first! Why don't we all go have lunch together? It's on me, as thanks for the maintenance!
Foreman: We'll eat up, recharge, and then get back to work in the afternoon!
Fylkis: Um, but... I wouldn't want to impose...
Foreman: Nah, it's fine; don't worry about it!
Foreman: Oh, and if you folks don't mind, it'd actually help us out if you skyfarers could take that magishell off our hands.
Foreman: We don't know anything about it, after all. Better for it to be with someone who can maintain it, right?
Fylkis: ...
As (Captain) and company head back to the village for lunch, small figures secretly watch them.
Mischievous Boy: You heard that?
Peppy Girl: I sure did! Those skyfarers might take that big toy away!
Mischievous Boy: It'd be such a waste to just give away something so cool!
Peppy Girl: Let's at least touch it before they take it away!
Eyes sparkling with curiosity are fixed on the magishell.

Fylkis, Magishell Engineer: Scene 3

The children climb onto the magishell and accidentally send it spiraling out of control. Fylkis chases it on Andorinha and stops it by leaping aboard.

Vyrn: Phew, I'm stuffed! Appreciate the meal!
Fylkis: That was delicious. Thank you, mister.
Foreman: Glad to hear our village's cooking suited your tastes!
Fylkis: Hm?
Easygoing Islander: Boss! This is bad, really bad!
Foreman: Huh? What's wrong?
Easygoing Islander: That chunk of metal started moving! It's running all over the place!
Fylkis: The magishell?
Fylkis: Strange, would it really malfunction in a way that makes it move on its own? Built-in safety features are supposed to prevent that...
Fylkis: Wait, I guess it's possible those safety features are broken too!
Vyrn: Would that really make it move on its own though?
Easygoing Islander: It looks like some of the village kids are riding it!
Lyria: What? Th-that could be a problem!
Mischievous Boy: Waaahhhhh!
Peppy Girl: I-it won't stop!
The group spots the children riding the magishell from a distance.
Vyrn: Fylkis! Any chance you can stop the magishell remotely?
Fylkis: I can only control a magishell remotely if I understand its structural makeup.
Fylkis: And I didn't get a proper look inside earlier...
Foreman: We've gotta save those kids, fast! Damn it, how are we gonna catch up?
Vyrn: There's no getting ahead of it. Thing's dartin' all over the place...
Fylkis: In that case...
Fylkis: Andorinha!
Responding to Fylkis's call, Andorinha rushes over from where it was kept on the Grandcypher.
Vyrn: What are you gonna do?
Fylkis: Andorinha can catch up to that magishell!
Andorinha: ...!
Fylkis mounts Andorinha as it arrives and immediately takes off.
Fylkis: Heeey, wait up!
Fylkis: You can hear me, right! You've both got quite a bit of magical power, don't you?
Mischievous Boy: Huh, what?
Fylkis: But you can't control it at all... To be fair, that might be because it's half broken... Well, that explanation can wait.
Fylkis: Anyway, stopping it is easy enough.
Peppy Girl: Ugh... Waaaahhh!
Fylkis: You just, um, pull the control stick like—
Peppy Girl: Waaaahhh!
Fylkis: Ah...
Fylkis calls out to the children, but in their panic, they can't make out her words.
Fylkis: This isn't working!
Fylkis stands up on top of the moving Andorinha.
Fylkis: Whoa—oop? Whoa!
Lyria: Aye yai yai! Fylkis, you need to stay seated!
Vyrn: Why's she standin' up like that?
Fylkis: A little more speed, Andorinha! That's it, keep it up...
Fylkis: Now!
Fylkis makes a desperate leap from Andorinha onto the rampaging magishell's seat.
Fylkis: Gahh!
Fylkis: Ow... My tailbone...
Fylkis: At least it worked! I made it across!
Mischievous Boy: M-miss! Help!
Peppy Girl: Waaahhh!
Fylkis: All right, I'll stop it now.
Fylkis: There!
Mischievous Boy: W-we're safe...
Vyrn's Voice: Hey, Fylkis! Everyone okay over there?
Fylkis: Good question. Is anyone hurt?
Peppy Girl: Sniff... W-we're okay...
Foreman: Honestly, you little troublemakers! I told you not to go near that thing, didn't I?
Mischievous Boy: We're sorry!
Peppy Girl: W-we didn't think this would happen! We're really sorry!
Fylkis: It's okay.
Easygoing Islander: Glad to see you're all safe... Skyfarers, thank you so much!
Foreman: Yeah... Something this dangerous really ought to be taken off our hands by you skyfarers...
Fylkis: Ah, hold on a moment.
Fylkis: I'd like you to wait on that decision until I fix this magishell.
Foreman: Oh? Well, sure...
Fylkis: Good... I'll make sure to fix it properly.

Fylkis, Magishell Engineer: Scene 4

Fylkis shows the magishell's usefulness in restoring land ravaged by the Grand Uplift, and the villagers agree to keep it for the time being. Leaving behind usage and upkeep instructions, the Levleath receives her first reward as a skyfarer.

Fylkis: Connect this here, and... Yeah, okay! That should do it.
Foreman: Wow! Done with the maintenance already, miss?
Fylkis: Yeah. Fortunately, it wasn't that badly damaged.
Fylkis: I'd like everyone to watch this magishell at work.
Easygoing Islander: At work?
Fylkis uses the magishell to dig up and transport soil, showcasing its use to the puzzled islanders.
Easygoing Islander: Whoa-ho... The thing's a powerhouse.
Foreman: Look at it go! Used right, I bet it could really help with leveling the ground...
Fylkis: Exactly. It's a magishell meant for construction work, so it should be really useful for leveling land too.
Fylkis: Digging up soil, carrying it around... Until the magishell's owner comes to retrieve it, I think it'd be fine to use it on this island.
Fylkis: It'll be more helpful to everyone here than if we took it with us.
Foreman: True enough! Plus if you guys take it with you, we might have a problem when the original owner comes looking for it.
Foreman: In that case, I guess we'll just borrow it! And we'll have to thank the owner properly when they show up.
Easygoing Islander: Watching the magishell work, it's starting to seem kind of cute, don't you think?
Fylkis: Yeah, magishells are hardworking and definitely cute. Take good care of it.
Fylkis: I'll write down some simple repair and usage notes.
Foreman: You've really gone above and beyond, miss! A meal isn't going to be enough—we've gotta pay you properly for this job.
Easygoing Islander: Yeah! That's right—this helps the whole village, so we should all pitch in.
Fylkis: Huh, really?
Foreman: Work deserves proper reward! No need to be modest.
Fylkis: Thanks. I'm glad I could be of help.
Fylkis: Ah...
Fylkis: Does that mean this counts as my first completed job as a skyfarer?
Lyria: Oh! You're right! And it's the kind of job only you could do, Fylkis!
Fylkis: Really? Heh... That makes me kind of happy.
Fylkis: But now that I think about it...
Lyria: What is it?
Fylkis: Didn't we forget to draw water?
Lyria: Ah!
Lyria: Ahaha... You're right. Let's go.
Fylkis: All right.
Fylkis: Come on, Andorinha. One more job to go.
Fylkis: From here on out, I've got to keep doing my best as a skyfarer. And of course, as an exorcist too.
A sense of pride in her own skills shows on Fylkis's beaming expression.
With her proven abilities, Fylkis will continue her journey through the Sky Realm with confidence.
