Birth of a Magical Girl

One day just before Valentine's, (Captain) and company find Monika looking distraught. It turns out she has been cast as the magical girl in a play the Crew of Enforcers plans to perform at an orphanage. Drusilla and Ladiva fashion Monika a costume and convince her to pose in it, much to her embarrassment.

One day just before Valentine's, Monika sits reading a book in her usual cafe.
Monika: ...
With every turn of the page, her expression becomes increasingly more troubled.
???: Monika, is that you?
Monika: Hm?
Monika: Well, if it isn't (Captain)'s crew. Fancy running into you in a place like this. What brings you all here today?
Ladiva: With Valentine's Day on the horizon, we decided to go hunting for new confectionary-making ideas.
Drusilla: We heard the chocolate goodies here are to die for, so we dropped in for some inspiration!
Monika: I see. This shop does have a wide selection of chocolate sweets, each as excellent as the next.
Ladiva: Are you by any chance a regular here?
Monika: This is one of my favorite shops, actually.
Ladiva: Is that so! Hehe. Now I know we came to the right place!
(Captain) and the crew take a seat, flagging down a waiter once everyone has picked out a tasty treat from the menu.
While waiting for their order, Vyrn's attention turns to the book in Monika's hands.
Vyrn: Hey, isn't that the kids' book about magical girls that's all the rage right now? Didn't know you liked that kinda stuff.
Drusilla: I've read that book too! The magical girls in it were so cool—it was really entertaining!
Ladiva: Drusilla lent it to me, and it was such a lovely story, I ended up finishing it in one sitting!
Monika: It's true the story is easy to parse, with plot twists even an adult can enjoy. However...
Lyria: What's wrong? You look so serious...
Monika: Take a look at this.
Monika pulls a leaflet out of her satchel and shows it to the others.
Lyria: Let's see... The Crew of Enforcers is going to be putting on a play?
Monika: The Enforcers periodically visit orphanages on other islands to put on a play illustrating what our organization is all about.
Vyrn: Huh. Sounds like you guys've got fingers in a lot of pies too. So is there some problem with the play?
Monika: Well, the contents are a bit hard to grasp, and the dialogue is formal and stiff. It's pretty unpopular with the children, especially the girls.
Monika: That's why we decided to simplify things and come up with a theme the kids would enjoy.
Monika: So this time around, the main character is going to be a magical girl.
Ladiva: I see. Magical girls are popular among the little ones, especially girls.
Vyrn: So that's why you looked so upset? I gotta admit, magical girls don't really seem to fit in a play about the Enforcers...
Monika: Actually, the deeds of enforcers and magical girls are more similar than you might think.
Monika: To be fair, the whole magical girl concept is apparently based on a real skyfarer who uses her magic to protect order in the skies.
Monika: That explains why they fit together well.
Monika: All in all, I agree with turning the play into something the children will be interested in.
Monika: The question is... why was I cast to play the magical girl?
Ladiva: Oh my! The magical girl is the lead role, right? That's a big responsibility!
Monika: Indeed. It was a direct order from the top brass.
Saying this, Monika holds her head in her hands and begins grumbling to herself.
Monika: I can't deny that I'm the youngest-looking enforcer in the bunch... but I'm a grown adult, just like the rest of them.
Monika: If I dress up like a magical girl at my age, I'm going to be the laughingstock of all my subordinates...
Lyria: U-um... Monika?
Monika: Sorry. Never mind me.
Monika takes a deep breath and shakes her head back and forth, as though attempting to rid herself of her depressing thoughts.
Monika: I understand this is a noble cause. It's only right that I should be studying magical girls for future reference.
Vyrn: Uh, how should I put this... Sounds like you've got things pretty rough too.
As Monika smiles grimly at Vyrn's words, Drusilla edges closer, her eyes sparkling.
Drusilla: U-um, so what kind of outfit will you be wearing?
Drusilla: A cutesy one with lots of frills, I imagine?
Drusilla: Or maybe something more grand and hero-esque?
Drusilla: If I had to pick one, I'd say cute is the way to go!
Monika: A-actually, the outfit hasn't been decided yet. And honestly, I wouldn't know where to begin picking one out.
Ladiva: A magical girl outfit... Now that I think of it, Medusa wore one before for Valentine's Day, didn't she?
Medusa: Sugar Time: Love and Passion!
Monika: Hm. Do you think I might be able to get a look at that outfit you mentioned?
Monika: It's hard to get a clear image in my mind from a book. I'd like to use a real-life costume as a reference, if possible.
  1. I'll ask Medusa.

Choose: I'll ask Medusa.

Monika: Thanks, I appreciate it. In that case, I'll pay a visit to your airship at a later date.
Monika: Sigh... A magical girl, huh? I wonder if I'll be able to pull off the role...
Heaving a deep sigh, Monika mutters uncertainly to herself.
A few days pass.
As promised, Monika drops by the Grandcypher in hopes of getting a glimpse of Medusa's magical girl outfit.
Monika: Sorry to get straight to the point, but I'd appreciate it if I could see that costume—
Medusa: Here it is!
Medusa: Sugar Time: Love and Passion! Magical Light... Sparkling! Magical Girl Sweet-Tooth Medusa!
Monika: ...
Medusa: Heh. And that's how it's done!
Drusilla: You're so cool, Medusa!
Vyrn: C'mon, Snake Girl! Quit crashin' in like that! It's enough to give anybody a heart attack!
Medusa: What's the problem? Not like anyone got hurt.
Vyrn: Monika was so surprised, she's frozen stiff!
Monika: N-no, I'm fine. Don't worry about me.
Monika: In any case... Hm. So that's a magical girl outfit...
Medusa: Heh. Cute, huh?
Monika: Definitely. It looks great on you.
Monika: But I doubt a cutesy outfit like that would suit me...
Ladiva: Really? I think you'd be able to pull it off with no trouble at all.
Monika: No, I have to disagree with you there...
Drusilla: In that case, I know just how to clear this up—you just need to try one on!
Monika: ...
Pardon?
Ladiva takes an outfit out of the bag behind her and presents it to Monika.
Lyria: Wow, what a cute outfit!
Monika: What is this?
Drusilla: It happens to be a magical girl costume that I designed just for you, Monika!
Drusilla: I selected some clothes off the rack and had Ladiva sew on the decorations!
Ladiva: Sorry for not asking beforehand. I thought it was a bit large to be for Drusilla...
Ladiva: But I was having so much fun sewing, I ended up finishing without asking who it was for.
Monika: ...
Monika: Er... I'm grateful to you both for going to so much trouble.
Monika: But it's little too cutesy for me, don't you think? I'd prefer something a little more plain-Jane...
Drusilla: Over my dead body! If we did that, this adorable magical girl outfit would go to waste!
Ladiva: Hmm. "Plain-Jane" might be going in the wrong direction...
Ladiva: It doesn't have to be this exact outfit, but you'll probably want something that screams "magical girl" so the younger children can follow along.
Monika: Ngh... I have to admit, you've got a point. But still...
Medusa: Even I know magical girl stories are a hit with skydwellers!
Medusa: And I've also heard costumes like that one are the cutest and most popular right now!
Medusa: But even knowing that, you're still against it?
Monika: No, that's not it. It's just... embarrassing.
Medusa: Embarrassing? Why? It's so cute!
Medusa: Besides, I need you to wear that outfit!
Vyrn: Huh? Why the heck would you need that?
Medusa: Apparently magical girl stories these days are supposed to feature a rival character.
Medusa: The townspeople were saying a rival brings out a magical girl's true cuteness and charm!
Medusa: So I need you to put on that outfit and play the role of my rival.
Medusa: With you by my side, my costume will have even more room to shine in comparison!
Monika: Er, I'm only planning to wear the outfit during the play. Otherwise it seems a bit, well...
Drusilla: Won't you at least try it on? I reeeally want to see you as a magical girl.
Drusilla stares sadly at Monika, her eyes shining with tears.
Monika: Ngh... A-all right, fine. I'll... give it a try.
Drusilla: In that case, I'll show you to my room. You can get changed there!
Unable to contain her excitement, Drusilla takes Monika's hand and practically drags her down the hall.
Monika: Er... I'm finished changing. So... what do you think?
Drusilla: I knew it—you're the spitting image of a magical girl!
Medusa: Huh. It actually looks pretty good on you.
  1. You look adorable.
  2. The kids will love it.

Choose: You look adorable.

Monika: Adorable?
Monika: Hearing that at my age from someone younger than me is... well, I'm not sure how to feel.

Monika: But don't you think the skirt's a bit too short? If I'm not careful, I'll be on full display...
Medusa: I'm not sure of the reasoning behind it, but that's just how magical girl outfits are.
Medusa: Okay, now you just need a pose and a catchphrase.
Monika: Pose? Catchphrase?
Medusa: Remember the intro I did earlier? Something like that.
Medusa: Sugar Time: Love and Passion! Magical Light... Sparkling! Magical Girl Sweet-Tooth Medusa!
Monika: Y-you want me to do that?
Drusilla: Any magical girl worth her sugar has to have a pose and catchphrase!
Monika: N-now that you mention it, there was something like that in the script I received...
Drusilla: Ooh, show us, please!
Monika: Er, but I only came here to get a look at that costume...
Vyrn: If it's in the script, that means it'll be in the play, right? So what's the harm?
Vyrn: Besides, wouldn't practicin' in front of us help you be less nervous when the real thing comes around?
Monika: That's true, but...
Drusilla: Pretty please?
Monika: Urgh...
Seeing Drusilla's face fall, Monika hesitates, her expression conflicted.
Monika: A-all right. I guess it wouldn't hurt to get some practice in.
Monika: Haah...
Monika takes a deep breath and strikes a pose, her face beet red.
Monika: Lovely Brave Cure! Infinite Magic!
Monika: Magical Girl Lovely-Heart Monika! In the name of the skies, I'll lead you!
Lyria: Oh my! That was so cool, Monika!
Medusa: Huh... I have to admit, that wasn't half bad. I officially declare you worthy of being my rival.
Ladiva: Your movements were so sharp and snazzy! With an intro like that, you'd fit right in as a duelist!
Drusilla: One more time! I want to see it again!
Monika: Urgh, this is mortifying. Why should a grown adult like me have to play dress-up?
Monika's eyes well up out of embarrassment.
(Captain) and the crew look on, smiling fondly at their red-faced friend.
