Wavering Spirit

Naramaya is down in the doldrums after some harsh words from Vyrn, and Lyria suggests the two make nice and head into town for some fun. When Narmaya hears this, she immediately cheers up.

Narmaya: What did I do wrong this time? Maybe I was standing too close? I guess I was getting a little too familiar with him...

One day, (Captain) and the crew find Narmaya scolding herself.

Along with a worried Vyrn close by.

Lyria: Um, Vyrn? What happened?

Vyrn: She was really fussing over me, so I asked her to give me a little space.

Narmaya: I need to be careful about what I say and how I look at people... But that's only the start...

Vyrn: Now she's trying to figure out why I asked her to leave me alone.

Vyrn: She's very earnest. Maybe too earnest, if you ask me.

Lyria: Hmm... You should just make up with each other!

Vyrn: Make up? But we weren't even fighting!

Lyria: That may be, but if we don't do something, she's just going to stay like this forever.

Lyria: She's always so nice to us, so why don't we show her how thankful we are and go do something with her?

Lyria: How about it, Vyrn? (Captain)? Does that sound good?

Vyrn: Well, I guess... How about it, Narmaya? Wanna go into town with us?

Narmaya: Sure! I'd love to!

Narmaya: You're coming too, right, (Captain)? Let's go!

Wavering Spirit: Scene 2

(Captain) and the crew overhear rumors of an Eternal who uses katanas, causing Narmaya to jump out of her seat. She claims nothing is wrong, but the crew can tell something is amiss.

(Captain) and the crew visit a nearby town with Narmaya.

Narmaya: Say, everyone, would you like me to go get something for you?

Lyria: If you're getting something, let us come with you!

Narmaya: Okay, then! Let's go!

After the crew is done shopping for snacks and other small items, they stop by a nearby tavern to rest and get something to eat.

Narmaya: Here's your food, everyone!

Lyria: Thank you, Narmaya!

Lyria: Getting to eat with everyone is so much fun, isn't it?

Narmaya: Yeah, it is. Lots of fun!

While the crew is enjoying their meal, they overhear a few fellow patrons.

Tavern Regular 1: Hey, have you heard of these guys? They've got this crazy sounding name...

Tavern Regular 2: Yeah, the... Whaddaya calls 'em? The Uddernals?

Narmaya: ...!

Tavern Regular 1: Yeah, that's it! The Eternals! Who do you think is the strongest?

Tavern Regular 2: Hmm, I dunno. There's that really tough fella with the katanas...

Narmaya jumps out of her seat.

Vyrn: Something wrong? Looking kinda pale there...

Narmaya: It's... nothing. Really. I'm fine.

Narmaya: Anyway! Why don't we get some exercise after this?

Vyrn: That sounds like a good idea! I love training with you! (Captain) does, too, right?

Narmaya: Hehe, really? All right, let's go! Time to train!

A smiling Narmaya leads the crew out of the tavern.

The crew follows Narmaya to a dank and gloomy cave.

It turns out to be a nest of dangerous and gruesome monsters.

Monster: Grooooar!

Narmaya: Hyah!

Monster: Gwarrgh...

Without a moment's hesitation, Narmaya cuts the beasts down and proceeds farther into the cave.

Vyrn: Whoa... You're something else, Narmaya!

Lyria: But somehow she seems a little... different right now.

Narmaya: (Captain)! Lyria! Stay sharp!

Narmaya: Let's take care of these together!

(Captain) draws a weapon, but can't shake the feeling there's something strange going on with the smiling Narmaya.

Wavering Spirit: Scene 3

Bandits attack the caravan the crew is protecting, but Narmaya quickly puts them away. One of the merchants compares her skill to that of Eahta, the Eternal, prompting a sudden change in her behavior.

A few days after training in the monster cave, Narmaya is back to her old self, sticking close to (Captain) and the others.

Narmaya: (Captain)! Lyria! Would you like me to make you something to eat?

Lyria: Really? That would be great!

Narmaya: Hehe. Just leave everything to me.

A few days later, Narmaya visits the crew's sleeping quarters at night.

Narmaya: (Captain)! Aren't you cold? Need any more covers?

Vyrn: U-um, it's all right, Narmaya. (Captain)'s a kid, not a baby.

Narmaya: Oh, okay... Well, then I'll see you in the morning. Good night, everyone!

A few days later, Narmaya and the crew are having a meal together.

Narmaya scoops up some rice with a spoon and tries to feed it to Lyria.

Narmaya: Here you go, Lyria! Say ahh!

Lyria: Um... Ahh...

Narmaya: Hehe... Ah, let me take care of the plates.

Vyrn: You know, she's been fussing over us even more than usual, lately. Think she's getting worse?

Lyria: You're right. It's like she gets more doting and protective with every day that goes by.

Vyrn: She's been like this ever since we heard those guys talking about the Eternals at the tavern.

A few days later, the crew is hired to escort a caravan of merchants.

As it turns out, the caravan will be passing through dangerous territory known for bandit attacks.

When pressed about the matter, the merchant in charge admits he's heard the rumors about Narmaya's abilities.

Merchant: What good fortune to have such a famous and talented sword master protecting us! We've nothing to worry about now!

Narmaya: Maybe you're thinking of someone else. I wouldn't even say I'm talented, much less a sword master.

Merchant: Well, well, and a modest sword master she is! Oho, I'm so glad you're here with us!

Narmaya: Sigh...

Although clearly upset, Narmaya joins the crew in helping the caravan.

Midway through the assignment, Narmaya and (Captain) spot a band of thieves approaching and ready their weapons.

Narmaya: Here they come! Be on your guard!

Thief 1: Hahaha! Hand over everything you've got!

Thief 2: Take special care with the jewels and other valuables!

Thief 3: Hurry up, already! That is, if you value your life!

Merchant: Aiieee! P-please help us!

Narmaya: Are you ready, (Captain)?

(Captain) gives her a nod before mounting their attack.

Narmaya: Hyaa!

Thief 1: Argh!

Thief 2: L-look at how she wields her blade! How is that even possible?

Merchant: Incredible! So the rumors are true!

Merchant: With skill such as this, you should be a match for even Eahta, the strongest of the Eternals!

Narmaya: ...!

Narmaya: I can't...

Thief 3: Wh-what?

Narmaya: I'll never be as good as him... He's never even noticed me...

Devastated, Narmaya stops dead in her tracks.

Thief 2: I dunno what's going on, but now's our chance!

Narmaya: Agh... Rgh...

The thief takes advantage of the situation by knocking Narmaya's katana away from her.

Thief 2: Not so scary anymore, are you? You'll pay for what you did to my friends!

Lyria: Narmaya! Look out!

(Captain) jumps in and counters the blow, then picks up Narmaya's fallen katana.

Thief 2: Urgh...

Vyrn: You okay, Narmaya?

Narmaya: I'm so sorry...

Narmaya apologizes as (Captain) hands her the katana.

Narmaya: I'm okay... I can fight, really...

Thief 3: Don't be so sure! All right, boys! Get 'em!

Vyrn: There's more of them! Watch out!

Wavering Spirit: Scene 4

Narmaya reveals that Eahta, one of the Eternals, is a relative of hers who refuses to recognize her. From that day forward, Narmaya's doting behavior continues to worsen, but at least the crew has an inkling as to the reason why.

After beating the band of thieves, the crew safely escorts the caravan of merchants to town.

The crew receives payment from the merchants and return to the ship, but they're still concerned about Narmaya's behavior.

Vyrn: What happened back there, Narmaya? Does it have something to do with how weird you've been acting lately?

Narmaya: I'm sorry. I'll try to figure it out on my own...

Lyria: Narmaya, wait! Why can't you just talk to us about it? We're here to support you!

Vyrn: Yeah! We just wanna help, that's all!

Narmaya: Thank you, everyone... But where should I even begin...

Narmaya forces a smile, and after thinking for a moment, begins to tell the crew everything.

Narmaya: When I was young, there was a samurai in my family who I looked up to. I wanted to learn how to use the katana just like him.

Lyria: That must be the man you've mentioned before.

Narmaya: Yes. Zanba, the greatest wielder of katanas in the sky. Also known as... Eahta, of the Eternals.

Vyrn: Whoa! You're related to that crazy strong Eternal guy?

Narmaya: Distant relatives, yes. I was very young at the time, but he came to stay with my family.

Narmaya: I wanted him to acknowledge me, so I practiced with the katana day and night.

Narmaya: But he has no interest in the weak. He cares only for the strong.

Narmaya: So single-minded is he in his quest for power, that he's even forgotten his original name.

Vyrn: Wow. Talk about focus.

Narmaya: That's right. His drive, his power, it sparked something in me. I aspired to be like him, but I was always too weak for him to care about me.

Narmaya: It was my dream to have him notice me, so I kept training, never giving up... But nothing ever changed.

Narmaya: Years passed, and before I realized it, he had departed on a quest to grow even stronger.

Narmaya: No matter how much I fought with my katana, no matter how skilled I became, he never noticed me.

Narmaya: He never once gave me a pat on the head... Never once called me by name...

Lyria: How awful...

Narmaya: But I'm the one to blame. I was too weak. Too inexperienced.

Narmaya: I had to become stronger. Even if I had to learn magic... Even if I had to do it by myself... I would master the katana, practicing day in, day out.

Narmaya: I thought that if I became stronger, then someday he would come back and acknowledge me.

Narmaya: And once he did, he would finally say my name. At least, that's what I believed...

Lyria: Oh, Narmaya...

Narmaya: So when you guys praised me, it was the happiest moment of my life.

Narmaya: I can't explain it. I just... felt so relieved.

Narmaya: That's why I wanted to thank you. That's why I wanted to do everything I could for you.

Narmaya: I'm sorry to be such a nuisance all the time. I'll try to calm down...

Narmaya: ...?

Narmaya: ...! You called me by name... How nice of you.

Narmaya: Thank you so much, (Captain).

As Narmaya tries to leave, (Captain) reaches out and gently pats her head.

Narmaya: What are you... Oh...

Narmaya: You're... trying to say it's all going to be okay?

Narmaya: Thank you. I'm happy to hear it.

Narmaya thanks (Captain) and the crew, smiling all the while.

A few days later...

Narmaya: Oh, Vyrn! You've got something on your mouth. Let me wipe it for you!

Vyrn: Huh? Oh, thanks...

Narmaya: Hey, Lyria! Do you want me to brush your hair for you?

Lyria: Oh, th-thanks, Narmaya!

Narmaya now dotes on the trio more than ever.

Vyrn: She's getting even worse than before. It's pretty rare that I have a day where she isn't sticking close by.

Lyria: Haha! Me too, Vyrn. Me too...

As they talk, (Captain) brings a glass up to take a sip, but accidentally spills some water.

Narmaya: Are you all right? Do you want to change your clothes? Let me help you!

Vyrn: Hey, don't worry about it! (Captain) can handle it. Right, (Captain)?

Narmaya: Really? Are you sure? Why don't you let me help?

Vyrn: Hey! Enough already! I said it was fine, so just... Aw, sorry.

Narmaya: I... I'm sorry... I'll do better...

Lyria: Oh no, it's a total relapse! What should we do?

A heartbroken Narmaya walks over to a corner of the room and begins scolding herself.

The crew is concerned about her, but they also understand the reasons for her unwavering drive and determination.
