Edge of the Dream

Nehan, plagued by the guilt of creating harmful drugs, has a recurring nightmare. He is finally able to awaken thanks to the sweet-dream talisman that Mugen places by his pillow.

Stardust Town is a safe haven for orphans who have nowhere else to go.
In one of the houses, a large figure watches over a man in a deep slumber.
Nehan: ...
Mugen: Nehan...
Mugen sags his shoulders, saddened by the lack of a response.
Feower: Here you are. It's almost dinner time, Mugen.
Mugen: Mm! Okay.
Feower: Are your manners degrading? Try "yes" next time.
Mugen: Mm? Mugen copy Tien.
Feower: Ah... She's an exception.
Mugen: For instance... Why?
Feower: Er, you see... Tien's the oldest of all the Stardust children, so she's like an elder to us.
Mugen: Elder? Like elderberry?
Feower: Ugh, there's no end to this...
Tien: Mm? You two are still here? It's fine to chat, but everyone's waiting in the dining hall.
Feower: Yep, we were on our way, Sis. Just got caught up explaining your verbal tic.
Tien: Mm? My verbal tic?
Feower: We can talk about it while eating. Let's go, Mugen.
Mugen: Okay. Mugen go now, Nehan.
Mature Mia: So Nehan's still asleep as usual, huh...
Mugen: Yes... Nehan quiet. Always sleepy, never wakey...
Feower: That's right, we've got one heck of a sleepyhead on our hands.
Feower: I can understand his anger at Seox for the loss of his clan, but to drag all of Stardust Town for his revenge...
Feower: Only to be shot at by Magasin remnants that he'd been stringing along the whole time is just deserts, if you ask me. And here we are taking care of the guy.
Mature Mia: Really now, you don't have to put it that way...
Mugen: Feower mad at Nehan?
Tien: Relax, Mugen, it's nothing like that. He just knows how lonely you are, so he wants Nehan to wake up soon.
Mugen: Ah. Feower very kind.
Feower: ...
Seeing you down gets me down too after all.
Feower: I'd rather see you break into goofy laughter, as annoying as that'd be.
Mugen: Mugen try not be annoying. No goofy laugh.
Mugen: Bad not only for Feower. Noisy is bad for Nehan dream.
Mugen: Mugen want Nehan to see sweet dream.
Feower: If the sound of your laughter could wake him, I think he'd have woken up a long time ago...
Mature Mia: Whatever the case, let's not get in the way of his sweet dreams!
Mature Mia: Just the other day, I had a happy dream of me eating a huge cake. It was yea big!
Feower: If you finished a cake that size by yourself, you'd have a weight problem to contend with.
Mature Mia: It's all good in a dream! You don't know how happy I was!
Mugen: Sweet dream... gives strength.
Mature Mia: That's right, Mugen! We want Nehan to recover, so the more sweet dreams he has, the better.
Mugen: Yes!
Mugen: ...
Mugen: (No, not just dreams. There's lot more happy things to do...)
Mugen: (Many happy things to do together when Nehan wake up...)
Nehan: ...
???: ...!
I'm running.
That right. I've never stopped running.
From what though? Hm, maybe it was—
???: Huff... Huff...
The hamlet of Karm, which permeated with the stench of death.
???: Ah!
Or the bizarre looks we'd get from outsiders. Or the kidnappers targeting children who'd strayed off the beaten path...
I tried to run from everything, despite knowing it was hopeless. What for then?
Child Nehan: ...
Magasin Brass: You've got guts to talk like that to us mafia brass...
Magasin Brass: You oughta know though...
Child Nehan: Hrgh!
Magasin Brass: I own you now. The moment you were dumb enough to expose yourself for a kidnappin', you gave up your right to talk big.
Magasin Brass: You'd better start learnin' to lick our boots if you wanna live!
Child Nehan: ...
Running from one day to the next. No matter the consequences, survival was all that mattered.
Child Nehan: ...
Assiduous Ash: Are you okay?
Child Nehan: ...
Assiduous Ash: What say we lean against each other? Won't do anything for the pain, but at least it'll keep us warm.
Child Nehan: Okay...
Child Nehan: Thanks.
Assiduous Ash: Great, it was getting real chilly.
Assiduous Ash: Boy, am I hungry...
Child Nehan: Me too...
Why did I choose survival? Perhaps it was for revenge.
Revenge on the one who murdered my mother, father, sister, and everyone else in the clan.
Assiduous Ash: Hack... Cough!
Child Nehan: Hold on!
Assiduous Ash: ...
Child Nehan: Here, chew on this grass! Should alleviate the pain a bit... Hang in there!
Child Nehan: You'll make it through this!
Assiduous Ash: ...
Child Nehan: ...!
But was revenge what truly mattered to me at the time?
Perhaps I was simply afraid of death.
...
Child Nehan: ...
Magasin Brass: I showed our chemists that bit of chewed grass lyin' on the ground...
Magasin Brass: You hid from us that you know how drugs work, didn't ya?
Child Nehan: ...
Magasin Brass: A tool ain't supposed to hide its worth from its master.
Magasin Brass: Unless you're lookin' to kick the bucket like that piece of trash over there.
I let slip the secrets of my clan that I'd kept hidden even as people blamed us for being assassins.
Secrets that I should've kept to myself until they could be used to save the skies. I'd given up the pride of my clan.
In order to survive, I ended up using my knowledge to create the dangerous drug known as Serenity Heaven. Ah, the irony of it all...
Nehan: Perhaps the true assassin was me all along.
Nehan: Murdering the very essence of Karm so that I could live on...
Nehan: I consciously betrayed the clan's trust in me, unlike him, who had no choice in the matter...
Nehan: Yes, it was me...
Though Nehan remains unconscious, Mugen makes a habit of visiting him daily.
Mugen: ...
Mugen: Yes! Come in.
Tien: We're back, Mugen.
Mugen: Tien! Eternals finish work?
Tien: Mm, Feower and I came back first. Seox was there too, but he has another assignment on a distant island with (Captain)'s crew.
Tien: It'll be a while before he comes to Stardust Town again, so he wanted me to give this to you.
Tien hands Mugen a talisman that's the size of her palm.
Mugen: Um... A letter? No...
Tien: We call this a talisman. Every talisman is imbued with a different magical effect.
Tien: Seox picked up this one from a fortune-telling friend of his. It grants the user sweet dreams.
Mugen: Sweet dreams... for Nehan!
Tien: Mm. He said to give it to you, knowing you'd use it for Nehan.
Mugen: Seox, Tien, thank you!
Mugen: Everyone so kind. Mugen happy. Mugen promise to return favor!
Tien: No worries. All I did was bring it to you.
Mugen: Tien so nice... Mugen very, very happy. Mugen return kindness someday!
Tien: Mm... You're such a sweet child, Mugen.
Tien: Oh, I almost forgot. Seox mentioned that the talisman goes into effect if you place it under a pillow.
Mugen: Okay! Mugen do it now!
Mugen gently raises Nehan's head and pillow before placing the talisman underneath.
Mugen: Nehan... Please see nice dream.
Mugen: Sweet dream is best.
Nehan: Where am I...
Mugen: Nehan sleepy?
Nehan: Ah, no, I was just thinking...
Mugen: Thinking? For instance?
Nehan: I was thinking about the past. About something that can no longer be helped.
Mugen: No help?
Nehan: What's done is done.
Nehan: It's just like, for instance, how there's no way to bring back your family.
Mugen: Family... For instance, what is family?
Nehan: Hm, how should I put this... Family is not limited to just blood relations as one might think.
Nehan: Yet just because you spend a lot of time with someone or care for them doesn't necessarily make them family either.
Mugen: Yawn...
Nehan: Looks like you're the sleepy one. Why don't you go take a nap while I think over your question?
Mugen: No sleep. Mugen want to talk. Wait for Nehan wakey-wakey.
Nehan: Well...
Nehan: You're right. I can't be stuck in this loop forever. It's about time I woke up.
Mugen: Soon, Nehan?
Nehan: ...
Mugen: Yawn... Sleepy...
Nehan: ...
Mugen: Song...
Nehan: Yeah, you always have been fond of songs. Let me sing you a lullaby.
Mugen: Lullaby... Mugen listen...
Nehan: ...
This is definitely a dream. A dream that works too well for me.
I don't belong in this place devoid of sin and punishment.
Why did I not realize this sooner?
Nehan: I disgust myself sometimes...
Nehan: ...
Mugen: ...
You were here all along, huh...
Nehan: Mugen...
At long last the sinner returns without hesitation from the dark abyss of his dream...
Fully aware that there is no escape from the anguish and suffering in the real world.
