Death and Rebirth
Months after Nier vanishes, the crew comes upon the mansion she once called home. They find her diary and learn of her tragic past. Just then, Nier shows up with the local town watch ready to kill her for her crimes. (Captain) and Death keep her safe, after which she agrees to search together with the crew for a way to be loved without destroying the world.
Some months have passed.
The crew meets up with a town representative to discuss the particulars of a mission.
Town Rep: So about this assignment, I'd like you all to find and detain the suspicious individual who has been prowling our streets night after night.
Lyria: Um, you want us to capture a stranger who's been lurking around?
Town Rep: Er...
Town Rep: I know this is a job for the town watch, but they're all too afraid to make a move...
Vyrn: We must be up against some real tough guy if the town watch is staying out of it.
Town Rep: Well...
The town rep hesitates to continue.
Vyrn: C'mon, we need some details. How do you expect to do our job without knowing what we're getting into.
Town Rep: I-I suppose you're right...
Town Rep: Well... The appearance and gait of the suspect bear a striking resemblance to that of a young woman said to be deceased.
Town Rep: She appears every night, asking everyone to please accept her, to love her...
Town Rep: Anytime someone brushes her off, she lashes out and inflicts body harm to that person, saying "I don't need you anymore if you can't love me."
Town Rep: Everyone in our town watch is just so creeped out by it all.
Lyria: ...!
Can you tell us any more about this girl?

Town Rep: Yes... Of course.
Town Rep: Not too far off from this town is the house of a prestigious family of mages that has produced many celebrated geniuses over the ages.
Town Rep: As for the most recent pair of sisters living in that house, the elder sister was supposedly a problem child.
Town Rep: Rumors of her problematic behavior never ceased, and word is she even practiced the dark arts in the forest...
Town Rep: However, there came a point in time when no one in town ever saw her around again.
Town Rep: A while later, the entire family just up and vanished without a trace.
Lyria: They were all gone?
Town Rep: Yes... All that remained in the house were massive pools of blood.
Lyria: ...
Vyrn: ...
Town Rep: Ever since, the townspeople are afraid to even approach the mansion.
Choose: What were the names of those sisters?
Town Rep: Hm, their names?
Choose: When did the suspect start showing up?
Town Rep: A few months ago...
Vyrn: Uh...
Lyria: Um... Do you happen to know the names of those sisters?

Town Rep: Let's see... The older one was Nier, and the younger one was Corrie.
Lyria & Vyrn: !
Town Rep: So do you think you can take on this assignment?
Town Rep: Thank you.
Pleased at (Captain)'s decision, the town representative bows with an appreciative smile.
After departing the town rep's home, the crew make their way to the mansion mentioned earlier.
Lyria: So... this is Nier's house...
Vyrn: What could have possibly happened here...
Massive cuts can be seen across the torn walls and ceiling.
Outlining those cuts are massive quantities of dried, discolored blood.
Lyria: Could the suspicious person the town rep mentioned really be Nier?
Vyrn: But we saw Death take her out before our very eyes...
Lyria: Yeah... We did...
Choose: Either way we still need to check inside.
Vyrn: Right. Let's see what clues we can find.
Lyria: Yes...
Vyrn: Guys, over here!
Lyria: What's wrong, Vyrn?
Vyrn: You think this could possibly be Nier's diary?
Vyrn hands the tattered journal to the others.
Lyria: Would it be right for us to read this?
Choose: It's worth taking a look.
Lyria: I suppose so... I'd like to know Nier a little better anyhow.
Vyrn: Yeah...
Vyrn: And maybe, just maybe, we'll even get to understand why she wanted to destroy the world so much...
Vyrn: Here's hoping.
Choose: I need to learn more about Nier.
Lyria: Yeah... Me too.
Lyria: Besides, going through this should give us a better idea of her feelings.

And so (Captain) opens up the diary.
The tears come falling as the crew finishes reading her diary.
It explains in detail the sort of life she lived in this house.
And the excruciating emotional hardships she suffered through every day.
Lyria: This is just awful... How could anyone live a life like this...
Lyria: It's true what Nier did was wrong... But she only turned out that way because... Oh... Nier...
Vyrn: Considering all that she went through, I totally get why she ended up wanting to destroy the world...
The inconsolable grief they all feel is evident on (Captain)'s visage.
Suddenly footsteps come up from behind.
(Captain) and company quickly turn around to find Nier alive and well.
Vyrn: Holy crap! Nier?
She immediately runs off the moment she spots the crew.
Lyria: W-wait, Nier!
Nier: Nier?
She stops in her tracks at the sound of Lyria's voice.
Nier: Nier... Is that my name?
Nier: Could it be that you people... actually know me?
Lyria: N-Nier, what are you saying...
Nier: Um... I don't know anything...
Nier: Not my name... Not even why I'm here...
Nier: If you know anything about me, please tell me...
Nier: Who... am I? What am I doing here?
Lyria: You really don't remember anything?
Nier: Erm... Well...
Nier stares long and hard at the crew.
Nier: I somehow... think I've met you all before...
Vyrn: Uh, anyone wanna tell me what's going on here?
Lyria: I-I'm not sure, but we definitely saw what Death did to Nier that time...
Vyrn: Any chance she's a ghost? 'Cept she's got a body...
Lyria: Yeah, she does...
Nier: Hm? What's wrong?
Lyria: Erm...
Town Rep: I can't believe you're really alive...
Vyrn: Hey, it's the town rep. Whatcha doin' here?
The crew turns to the voice and finds the town rep accompanied by fully armed guards of the town watch.
Town Rep: We can talk later. Work comes first.
The town rep sets his murderous eyes on Nier.
Nier: Eep... Wh-what's this about...
Town Rep: On your guard, everyone.
The guards raise their rifles at Nier.
Lyria: ...!
Why are you pointing your weapons at Nier?

Town Rep: We can't let this woman live!
Town Rep: She murdered my son in cold blood... along with so many other people in this town to fulfill her own selfish desires.
Town Rep: She needs to pay for her actions.
Town Rep: I have a responsibility as a parent—no, as the representative of this town.
Nier: ...
Nier trembles in fear, her vacant eyes trained on the town rep.
Nier: Are you... going to deny my existence too? As if... I don't belong in this world?
Nier: Then I don't need you...
Nier: Nuh-uh... Anyone and everyone who shuns me can just go away...
Nier: This entire world can just disappear!
Lyria: ...!
Death's card jumps out of (Captain)'s pocket in response to Nier's agonizing scream.
The next moment a thick darkness gushes forth and converges in the form of Death.
Death: Yoo may have died once, but yoor soul and yoor wish remain unchanged.
Death: My beloved... Accept me... Love me...
Nier: ...!
I... I know you...
I... I know you...
Nier: I don't remember... but I can just feel it... You're the only friend I ever had...
Nier: Okay... I accept and love you for who you are...
Nier: So please...
Nier: ...
Death: Yoo have spoken the words to renew our pact.
Death: My beloved... I've waited so long for our reunion...
Nier: Mm... Me too, Death.
Lyria: You remembered everything, Nier?
Nier: Yes... I also remember how you all got in the way of our dream...
Nier: And how Death killed me...
Nier: But now...
Nier directs her lifeless eyes to the town rep and guards.
Nier: Death...
Death: My beloved... I bring doom to all those who would hurt yoo.
With that, Death rushes at the town rep and guards.
Town Rep: Aiie!
(Captain) deflects Death's attack by a hairbreadth.
Nier: So you're here to interrupt again...
Choose: No—I'm trying to save you, Nier.
Nier: Then don't get in the way...
Nier: As we try to create a new world that will love and accept us...
Nier: It's our only means of salvation... So please...
Lyria: No! Absolutely not!
Nier: Huh...
Lyria: That wouldn't lead to what you really want, Nier!
Lyria: You plan on erasing everyone, right?
Choose: Don't you see how futile this is?
Nier: You're wrong!
Nier: Both Death and The World said we could have our own new world!
Lyria: You plan on erasing everyone, right?

Nier: Uh-huh. Those who refuse to acknowledge us have no place in the new world...
Lyria: So once you've removed everyone, you and Death will be the only ones remaining.
Vyrn: That's right. Who do you think's gonna be left around to accept you?
Nier: Eh... Death and I will be the only ones in the new world?
Nier: Th-then... Who's going to accept us? To love us?
Nier sinks to the ground in a depressed stupor.
Town Rep: Now! Shoot her!
Lyria: Nier!
A hail of bullets go flying in her direction.
(Captain) jumps at Nier, pushing her down to the ground.
Nier: Huh? (Captain)... Why?
Nier appears confounded.
Blood from the bullet wound on (Captain)'s shoulder drips on Nier's cheek.
Nier: ...!
Nier: Is this... blood? (Captain), you're hurt...
Choose: More importantly, are you okay?
Nier: Mm-hm... Because you protected me... (Captain)...
Nier: B-but why...
Nier: N-no! That's not the point...
Nier: You got hurt trying to protect me...

Town Rep: Finish them both off!
The town watch train their guns on both (Captain) and Nier.
Lyria: Noooo!
(Captain) wraps both arms tightly around Nier, shielding her from a potential barrage of gunfire.
Nier: ...!
Death!
Death!
Death moves toward the opposition, her murderous eyes indicating intent to slaughter everyone.
Death: Those who dare to hurt my beloved will pay... Yoo will all pay!
Death: I'll give yoo a death so gruesome yoo'll wish yoo were never born.
Town Rep: Aiie... Aaaahhhhhh!
The town rep and guards run in the opposite direction, all the while screaming for their lives.
Vyrn: Hey, you two okay?
(Captain) offers a thumbs-up.
Lyria: How can you call that okay!
Lyria: You're hurt... There's blood coming from your shoulder...
Lyria: We need to get you treated, (Captain)...
Nier: I-I'll do it... It's my fault that (Captain) got hurt after all...
Nier: Stay still...
Nier casts a restorative spell on (Captain)'s wound.
Nier: There... All better... It shouldn't leave a mark either...
Nier: Nuh-uh... I'm the one who should be thanking you...
Nier: B-but... Why did you save me to begin with?
Choose: My body just acted on its own.
Nier: Y-you mean...
Vyrn: Protecting you was the first thing (Captain) could think of.
Nier: But why? Even though I'm your enemy...
Choose: My gut instinct was to protect you.
Nier: But why? Even though I'm your enemy...

Lyria: That doesn't make a difference!
Nier: Huh?
Lyria: We don't want you to die, Nier! You have every right to continue living, just like us!
Vyrn: Yep. That's all the reason we need to save you.
Nier: So you saved me from death... because you want to see me alive and well?
Lyria: Yes.
Nier: That's the first time I've had anyone say such a nice thing to me...
Nier: Men would often come up to me with sweet talk, but in the end Death was the only one who didn't reject me...
Tears begin to well up in her eyes, spilling onto her cheeks.
Nier: Hey, (Captain). What... do you think I should do?
Nier: If no one will love me, if no one will acknowledge me, there'd be no point in creating a new world...
Nier: Is it too much to ask for acceptance?
Choose: We can look for another way together.
Nier: Huh...
Lyria: You've done a terrible thing to so many people.
Lyria: I don't think that can ever be forgiven.
Nier: ...
Lyria: Of course, that doesn't mean there's anything wrong with longing for a place to belong... Nothing at all.
Lyria: I'm sure there's a way for you to be loved and accepted by everyone even without destroying the world...
Lyria: And we can look for that together!
Nier: That option doesn't exist... which is why I wanted to destroy the world...
Vyrn: Don't throw in the towel just yet. We'll help you figure it out together!
Nier: Together...
Lyria: Um... Nier, what do you think of traveling with us?
Lyria: Adventuring across the world with us might give you a fresh perspective.
Nier: B-but if you're with me, you might be attacked again like earlier...
Nier: Wouldn't that... be a problem?
Vyrn: We'll deal with that when it happens.
Vyrn: If you're the reason anyone ever comes after us, we'll be the first to apologize for you.
Lyria: Mm-hm! We'll show them just how sorry we are until they finally forgive you!
Nier: ...
Nier: You wouldn't mind being around me? And helping me find a new path in life?
(Captain) extends a hand to Nier.
Choose: We'll be with you every step of the way.
Nier: Ah...
Nier: O-okay... I'll come along then... with all of you...
Nier clutches (Captain)'s hand tightly.
Nier: (Captain)... I'll do anything you ask from now on.
Nier: You only need to give the word.
Nier: So please... Keep me close... And don't let go... I never want to be alone again...
Lyria: That won't happen as long as we're around, Nier!
Lyria: We'll be friends forever!
Nier: Friends forever...
A gentle smile spreads across Nier's face.
Vyrn: Just one thing, Nier: how exactly did you survive?
Vyrn: We thought you were a goner for sure...
Nier: Um... It was Death's power...
Nier: Just as she has the power to send anyone to their demise, she also has the power to bring back the fallen...
Nier: So she killed me... removing every trace of my existence...
Nier: In order to give me another chance at life...
Nier: But why, Death? Your love is that of doom. If you wanted me dead...
Death is quick to respond.
Death: It is because I love yoo... that I killed yoo...
Death: Yet it is also because I love yoo... that I did not want to kill yoo...
Death: Now I can kill yoo again... So happy... So sad...
Death: Which is it? I don't know... I wish I did...
After letting out a gut-wrenching cry filled with both joy and sorrow, Death returns to her card.
Vyrn: Yeah, so I totally didn't get that, but Death sure is one creepy primal beast.
Lyria: Mm-hm... Though I'm sure her feelings for Nier are true.
Vyrn: More like Nier's the only person she cares about.
Lyria: Ahaha... I guess you could say that.
Vyrn: Anyway, lets just get out of here. I wouldn't want the townspeople to come looking for us again.
Lyria: All right. Let's get going then, Nier.
Nier: Okay!
Nier's face beaming, she happily sets out with the crew on a new journey.
Nier stands alone on the deck of the Grandcypher, taking in the night breeze.
Nier: Welcome back. How did it go?
Nier: Did you finish off all the townspeople who attacked us earlier?
Death: Yes. Every living creature that called the town its home will never take another breath.
Nier: Good. What a relief.
Nier: Heheh... Anyone who dares to hurt those precious to me don't deserve a place in this world...
Nier: Anyone who even thinks of bringing us harm... can just die. Haha...
The crew does not realize that deep down, Nier's heart is still horribly perverted...
That a rabid madness continues to loom in her heart.
Whether or not she will one day come to tread a more sane path...
Is a fate that remains to be seen.
