Kind Yet Tragic

Even after three days of sleeping like a log, Vaseraga remains bedridden. Zeta visits the Grandcypher and wonders if the change in the shape of Grynoth is having a negative effect on Vaseraga.

The people of the town stand aghast at Vaseraga's overwhelming, almost malevolent, power.
Vaseraga: ...
Lyria: Vaseraga!
Child: Waaah!
Lyria: Yikes! What to do, what to do...
Lyria hesitates as she cannot shrug off the child clinging onto her and go after Vaseraga.
Vyrn: Wait here, Lyria! I'll go after Spiky!
Lyria: Vyrn!
Vyrn: You take care of the kid!
Lyria: Okay! Please look after Vaseraga!
Vaseraga: Ngh...
Vyrn: Wait, Spiky!
Vaseraga: Why did you follow me here?
Vyrn: Hey, is that any way to talk to a pal? There's no way I'd leave you alone when you're hurtin' like this!
Vyrn: Your armor and scythe are looking kinda off too. I can't tell what's—
Vaseraga: Back off!
Vyrn: Whoa! Okay, something's definitely not right with you...
As if being controlled by some greater power, Vaseraga raises his scythe with trembling hands in preparation to strike at Vyrn.
Vaseraga: Don't come any closer.
Vyrn: Oy! What's gotten into you?
Vaseraga: Rgh!
Vyrn: Gah!
Vyrn dodges to the side, narrowly evading Vaseraga's swinging scythe.
Vyrn: What are you doing!
Vaseraga: Sorry... But you need to get out of here now! Ugh!
Vaseraga kneels down in an effort to hold himself back.
Vaseraga: Now that I'm the threat, I don't think I'll be able to protect you anymore.
Vyrn: Are you nuts or something?
Vaseraga: Just kidding...
Vyrn: Geez, Spiky...
Vaseraga: But I wasn't kidding when I told you to back off. Get lost already!
Vyrn: Ack! I'm not kidding either when I say I can't leave you like this!
Vaseraga: That's a problem... You may be small, but I've always admired your bravery and kindness.
Vyrn: Great. So now what do we do?
Lyria: Vyrn! Vaseraga!
Vaseraga: You guys...
Vaseraga lets out an even deeper sigh at the sight of Lyria, followed by (Captain) and crew.
Lyria: Vaseraga! Are you okay?
Vaseraga: Sorry for the trouble...
With a faint apology, Vaseraga falls unconscious.
Vyrn: Any ideas on what could've happened to Spiky?
Vaseraga: ...
Vaseraga continues to groan in his sleep aboard the Grandcypher.
Lyria: He's been asleep for three days now. This worries me...
  1. I'm worried too.
  2. I wonder about his scythe.

Choose: I'm worried too.

Lyria: He looks to be in so much pain...
Vyrn: Spiky's big and strong and he acts the part... This is the first time I've ever seen him suffering so much.
???: Hey! (Captain)?
Go to "Continue 1"

Choose: I wonder about his scythe.

Vyrn: Me too. It looks kinda weird now.
Lyria: It makes me feel uneasy. It's almost... creepy.
Lyria: I always thought it was an incredible weapon, but now...
???: Hey! (Captain)?

Continue 1

Vyrn: Hm? That voice...
???: Vaseraga's not around either. I wonder if they went off somewhere...
Zeta: Ah, there you are! What's everyone doing here?
Lyria: Zeta!
Vyrn: Good timing, Red! Something's come up!
Zeta: Huh? Why's everyone so on edge? Is that Vaseraga sleeping over there? What's up with him?
Vaseraga: Rgh...
Zeta: Whoa, what's this about?
Lyria: The truth is...
The crew explains about the abnormalities happening to Vaseraga's body.
Zeta: That's a lot to take in...
Vyrn: Does any of this ring a bell, Red?
Zeta: Nada. I've never seen Vaseraga like this either.
Lyria: I see...
Zeta: But you know...
Zeta takes note of how Vaseraga tightly grasps his scythe, Grynoth, despite lying collapsed on the bed.
Zeta: Did Grynoth change shape when Vaseraga's condition turned sour?
Lyria: Yes, it's looked like that ever since.
Vyrn: It was more like Spiky's mood changed all of a sudden when the scythe transformed.
Zeta: So that's what happened...
Lyria: Do you know something, Zeta?
Zeta: Ah, yes. Our weapons come specially provided by the Society.
Vyrn: That organization you guys belong to?
Zeta: Correct. They're pretty strict about classified info, so I can't say much.
Zeta: Either way, it's not like I know the whole story.
Lyria: I see...
Zeta: Don't be so upset, Lyria.
Lyria: But Vaseraga's—
Zeta: Geez.
Zeta: (And here I was thinking nothing could even dent your augmented body...)
Vyrn: Hm? Did you say something, Zeta?
Zeta: Ah! No, it's nothing! Anyway, I'll look into it and see what I can find.
Lyria: Thank you.
Vyrn: We're counting on you, Red!
Zeta: Just so we're clear: I'm not doing this for his sake, all right?
Zeta: This is as much of a problem for me as it is for him...
Zeta mutters under her breath as she takes a good long look at the Arvess Spear in her hand.

Kind Yet Tragic: Scene 2

Zeta, Beatrix, and Eustace discuss what could possibly be happening to Vaseraga. Meanwhile agents and soldiers show up outside the Grandcypher, demanding that the crew hand over Vaseraga.

Beatrix: Ah, there you are! Zeta!
Zeta: Bea...
Beatrix: Sorry to keep you waiting!
Hm? What's wrong? You're looking awfully serious.
Zeta: Bea, I need to ask you something.
Zeta: You said your Embrasque Sword has changed shape before, right?
Beatrix: Hm... You mean, like during Halloween?
Zeta: Bingo! Do you remember if there were any changes to your body as well?
Beatrix: No, not really.
Eustace: Beatrix.
Beatrix: What do you want?
Eustace frowns and points to Beatrix's sword.
Eustace: What is that?
Beatrix: You can tell just by looking at it, can't you? It's my Embrasque Sword.
Eustace: The shape and color are different.
Lyria: That's true. Doesn't it look really different from before?
Vyrn: It even has a weird emblem etched on the grip. What's it for?
Beatrix: Who knows...
Vyrn: Who knows? You don't know your own sword?
Beatrix: By the time I noticed it, the shape had already changed.
Beatrix: I think it was around the time I put on my costume. Heheh. Embrasque must've been excited about the mission.
Vyrn: So if you're in a good mood, then your sword also becomes happy and changes?
Beatrix: Huh? That can't be right! It's not like I'm particularly excited or anything!
Zeta: Are you absolutely sure? Nothing changed in the slightest?
Beatrix: Umm, yeah. Nothing at all.
Beatrix: If we're really digging for details though, I guess you could say I felt more pumped about the mission than usual. Why are you asking anyway?
Zeta: Because...
???: Hey.
Beatrix: Gaah!
Eustace: ...
Beatrix: Ugh, Eustace? Don't scare us like that!
Eustace: So you two were talking about our weapons.
Zeta: Indeed we were.
Eustace: Did something happen?
Zeta: ...
Beatrix: I'm curious too, Zeta. Tell us what happened.
Zeta: Sigh... All right then. I'll start from the beginning.
Beatrix: And Vaseraga hasn't woken up since?
Zeta: Yeah, this is definitely not normal.
Beatrix: Odd. Nothing like this happened to me on Halloween.
Eustace: If you ask me...
Eustace: What happened to Beatrix that time is completely different from what's happening to Vaseraga right now.
Zeta: Hm, you think so? Why do you say that?
Eustace: I can't say for sure.
Beatrix: Ugh, could you be any more vague!
Eustace: ...
Zeta: C'mon, Eustace.
Eustace: Each of our weapons is supposed to operate under a completely different mechanism.
Beatrix: Yeah?
Eustace: ...
Eustace: Time to get moving.
Beatrix: Huh? Where to?
Eustace: To where Vaseraga is.
Zeta: We should go too.
Beatrix: Hey! Wait for me!
Vaseraga: ...
Vyrn: He's not waking up.
Lyria: Yeah...
I wonder if Zeta learned anything new.
Vyrn: I sure hope so.
A raucous clamor can be heard outside the Grandcypher.
Lyria: What's that sound?
Vyrn: Is someone here to visit? Nah, it's too noisy for that. Let's go see what it is.
Soldier 1: We know you're in there!
Agent 1: Come out now!
Soldier 2: Resistance is futile!
Lyria: Wh-what is happening?
Vyrn: Aren't those the guys who were fighting it out in town?
Soldier 2: It's them! They're in cahoots with that freak! We've got 'em now!
Agent 2: Bring out that armored brute right now, you cowards!
A large, violent crowd surrounds the Grandcypher.
Lyria: Armored brute? Are they talking about Vaseraga?
Vyrn: Whoa, let's all calm down for a second. Why's everyone even here to begin with?
Agent 1: Shut your trap! We'll take apart your little airship piece by piece if we have to!
Vyrn: Ack! Stop it!
Zeta: Hey! What's the meaning of this?
Beatrix: Whoa! What the hell's going on here?
Soldier 1: Reinforcements? By jiminy, they've called for backup!
Agent 2: I guess they're not gonna back down without a fight. Let's show them what it means to mess with us!
Zeta: I have no idea what's happening, but we'd better be ready for anything.
Soldier 2: We can't let the threat grow any larger!
Zeta: Hah! So you wanna take us on, eh?
Agent 1: Agh! Looks like these guys are teamed up with that armored brute!
Seemingly influenced by an invisible force, the rowdy soldiers and agents turn a deaf ear to the crew and raise their weapons.
Beatrix: Something seems off about them. Could this be...
Eustace: That's definitely a possibility, but anything's possible right now.
Beatrix: Ugh! Don't tell me we're just gonna stand back here and watch!
Eustace: Whoever said anything about watching?
Eustace: We can start by shutting 'em up.
Beatrix: Hahah! Now we're talking!
Zeta: Take it easy on them, you guys! We're not going up against primal beasts here!
Beatrix: Yeah, whatever!

Kind Yet Tragic: Scene 3

Vaseraga awakes as a battle ensues outside. In order to save the crew, he attempts to offer himself to the attackers. Vyrn and Lyria stop him, but a primal beast summoned by the local baron makes its appearance.

Zeta, Beatrix, and Eustace begin fighting off the hordes of soldiers and agents surrounding the Grandcypher.
Lyria: Wow! They sure are powerful!
Vyrn: Yeah, but the enemy's got the numbers! We should join in!
Lyria: Right. Let's go, (Captain)!
???: Hold it.
Lyria: Ah!
Vaseraga: ...
Lyria: Vaseraga! You're awake!
Vyrn: Glad to see you up, but you should probably keep outta sight!
Vaseraga: ...
Vyrn: Spiky! It's dangerous out there!
Upon his sudden appearance, Vaseraga descends to the battlefield and walks right up to the soldiers.
Soldier 1: At last! The armored brute shows himself!
Agent 1: Kept us waitin' long enough!
Zeta: Vaseraga, what are you thinking? You're the one they're targeting!
Beatrix: I heard you were sleeping like a log... Feeling better now?
Eustace: ...
Vaseraga: You guys...
Zeta: Hey, are you even listening? You try to fight them in that sleepy daze, and that'll spell trouble for all of us!
Vyrn: That's right, Spiky! You should fall back—
Vaseraga: Humph!
Vyrn: Yikes!
Vaseraga swings Grynoth at his allies.
Vyrn: Ack! What was that for, Spiky? You could have hit us!
Vaseraga: Haah!
Vyrn: Gaah!
Lyria: Vaseraga! What's wrong?
Zeta: What the hell!
Agent 1: They're fighting among each other now?
Agent 2: Hah! Brutes will be brutes, I say!
Soldier 1: Our first priority is that big guy in armor.
Soldier 2: We can't let any threats to our town roam free!
Vaseraga: ...
Zeta: Ack! Enough is enough! It's time for—
Vyrn: Aargh!
Lyria: Eeyagh!
Vaseraga: Wha—
Vyrn and Lyria tackle Vaseraga and grab on to him with all their might.
Vaseraga: What are you two doing?
Vyrn: We don't know if you're doing this on purpose or if you're being controlled, but we can't just leave you alone!
Lyria: If you're doing this on purpose, you're doing it to help us, right?
Soldier 1: What's going on? I thought they were fighting.
Vaseraga: Get off of me.
Vyrn: Not happenin'!
Lyria: No!
Vaseraga: They're here for me. You guys will be okay if you fly off in the Grandcypher.
Vyrn: I said that ain't happenin'!
Vaseraga: ...
Beatrix: Hm... You think they'll be okay if we stay out of it?
Zeta: Let's keep watch for now.
Vaseraga: Don't worry about me. I'll be fine. Like I said, my body's augmented.
Vaseraga: Their attacks wouldn't even put a scratch on me.
Lyria: That's not the point!
Lyria clings to Vaseraga's arm even harder.
Lyria: I know your body won't feel any pain. What I'm worried about is your heart.
Lyria: You haven't done anything wrong, and you're one of the kindest people I know. Yet everyone here treats you like some kind of monster.
Lyria: There's no way you don't feel anything. There's no way you're not hurting... Because even I feel the pain!
Vyrn: Lyria...
Vaseraga: Getting upset over something would only make me repeat my mistakes.
Vaseraga: I can't bear to see my friends get hurt at my expense.
Zeta: Agh! Enough chitchat already! We don't have time for this!
Zeta: Point is Lyria's upset and it's your fault! Now own up to it already!
Lyria: Zeta, I... Umm...
Vaseraga: You're right.
Agent 1: What are they gabbin' on about?
Soldier 1: Hand over the armored brute now, and we will spare the rest of you!
Beatrix: Ugh! They don't know when to give up, do they?
Zeta: Let's just break through and get out of here already!
Vaseraga: They're just ordinary people. Go easy on them.
Zeta: Like you need to tell us!
Agent 2: Crud, here they come!
Soldier 2: Stand your ground! It's only a matter of time before the baron finishes his preparations!
Agent 1: Right, of course! We'll just have to hold until then.
???: Ohh! It's Mr. Spiky!
Vyrn: Hm? What's going on?
Child: Mr. Spiky!
Mother: Stop that! It's dangerous!
Vyrn: Isn't that the kid who was crying in town?
Lyria: Yes. And that must be his mother.
Agent 1: Someone shut that brat up.
Soldier 1: You will not! He's a commoner from the town!
Zeta: Mr. Spiky, he said? Is that supposed to be you?
Vaseraga: ...
Child: I-I just wanted to thank Mr. Spiky!
Child: So I came out here, and um, well...
Vaseraga: You were crying the other day. Was it not because you feared me?
Child: No way! I was just surprised...
Child: You protected me and the blue-haired lady! I knew I had to say thank you!
Vaseraga: I see...
Lyria: Teehee! Vaseraga is so strong and kind!
Child: Yeah! Mr. Spiky's the best!
Mother: Um, Vaseraga?
Zeta: Let's move. This is not the place to be getting sentimental.
Lyria: Ahh, right! Um...
Soldier 3: I come with a decree from the baron: preparations are complete!
Agent 1: It's about time!
Soldier 1: Fall back, everyone! We don't want to get caught in what's coming!
Zeta: They're retreating?
Beatrix: Have they given up already?
Eustace: Keep your eyes peeled.
Vaseraga: Something's coming.
???: Rgh!
Lyria: Ah! This is...
Vyrn: Lyria, could this be—
Lyria: It's definitely a primal beast!
Vaseraga: Now it's my turn to jump into the fray.
Zeta: You're kidding, right? You were just bedridden minutes ago.
Vaseraga: Ironic, I know. But I'm feeling pumped.
Beatrix: Hey, I'm taking credit for this one!
Eustace: Eyes up front, guys.
Lyria: Here it comes!
Vaseraga: Vyrn. Care to hide in my bag?
Vyrn: I said no already!
Vaseraga: Very well then.
Vaseraga: Great Scythe Grynoth! Drink in the blood of the primal beast and let your soul shape my blade!

Kind Yet Tragic: Scene 4

After defeating the primal beast, the young child from before and his mother call out to Vaseraga. It turns out Vaseraga has been regularly sending supplies to them—the wife and son of his deceased subordinate. The entire incident gives Vaseraga a new outlook on life.

The combined might of (Captain) and crew leads to a spectacular victory over the primal beast.
Vaseraga: Staying any longer would only cause further mayhem. We should depart at once.
Lyria: That's true. With the soldiers gone, now's our chance—
Mother: Wait, please!
Vyrn: Huh? You're still here with your son? It's not safe here!
Mother: Umm, Vaseraga... Are you Captain Vaseraga by any chance?
Vaseraga: ...
Vyrn: Captain? Wouldn't that be (Captain)?
Lyria: She seems to be talking to Vaseraga though.
Vyrn: That reminds me: Spiky was the captain of a crew way back when!
Vaseraga: I...
Mother: So we finally meet, Captain.
Vaseraga: ...
Zeta: Someone tell me what's happening here.
Mother: We've been receiving supplies from the Knickknack Shack all this time... I always hoped to meet you in person one day.
Mother: When my husband died, my son was still a newborn... I can't even begin to tell you how much your shipments of food and rupies have helped us.
Mother: Thank you so much. We are forever in your debt.
Beatrix: Rupies? Food? Vaseraga's been sending them provisions?
Zeta: Sure sounds like it.
Vaseraga: I am undeserving of your gratitude. After all... it is entirely my fault that he died.
Vaseraga: In fact you should regard me with disdain. I do not expect to atone for my actions with mere provisions.
Mother: No...
Mother: It's true that my husband's death was excruciatingly painful. I even despised you at one point.
Mother: But a life filled with such hate and anger is ultimately meaningless. So I decided to change my outlook.
Vaseraga: I see...
Mother: Captain... No, Vaseraga. You've done more than enough for us.
Mother: I would ask that you live for yourself, and for your newfound friends, from now on.
Vaseraga: ...
Child: Hey, Mr. Spiky.
As Vaseraga turns quiet, the child tugs on his hand.
Child: When I grow up, I'm gonna be a skyfarer!
Child: I'll be a big strong skyfarer, just like you and Daddy!
Vaseraga: Very well.
Vaseraga plants one of his massive hands on the child's head and gently pats it.
Zeta: So the Foe was involved with the incident in that town after all?
Vaseraga: I can't say for certain, but it's very likely.
Zeta: They even brought out a primal beast. Those jerks are getting bolder with every move.
Vaseraga: Looks like they're finally getting their act together.
Zeta: Heh, that's for sure.
Zeta: So... you're okay now?
Vaseraga: Yes. I apologize for making you worry.
Zeta: Me? Worried about you? Never!
Vaseraga: Yeah?
Zeta: Yeah is right!
Anyway, what was the whole deal with you collapsing?
Vaseraga: I imagine this weapon caused it all.
Zeta: Great Scythe Grynoth...
Vaseraga: I'm sure you know that Grynoth increases in strength each time I fight a primal beast.
Vaseraga: But I forced it to draw out its strength against a normal opponent this time. And my body took the brunt of the kickback.
Zeta: Kickback? I thought you didn't feel pain with that body of yours.
Vaseraga: Indeed. But it was just too much to take in this time.
Zeta: Seriously? How are you still using that weapon then?
Vaseraga: It's no longer a problem. My body is now acclimated to the power.
Zeta: It was enough to break you, of all people. Yet here you are saying you can handle it now...
Vaseraga: Sure, I was bedridden for a few days. But it would've been much worse for anyone else.
Zeta: I just don't get you sometimes...
Zeta looks down grimly at her Arvess Spear.
Vaseraga: You be careful too.
Zeta: Eustace mentioned that each of our weapons operates under a different mechanism.
Vaseraga: That's definitely very likely. But still...
Zeta: I know. I'll be careful.
Vaseraga: ...
Having parted ways with Zeta, a lone Vaseraga takes a sip from a glass of spirits.
Vaseraga: (Great Scythe Grynoth... Your power is now equal to that of a primal beast. In other words...)
Vaseraga: (Depending on how I use you, I myself will become the threat.)
Vaseraga: (But I swear to never again lose myself to such overwhelming power.)
Vaseraga: I've decided to live my life for them, and I need to stay true to that decision.
Vaseraga mutters under his breath as he finishes off the glass of spirits.
