A World Beyond Fluff

The crew tries to fix Wulf's fur, but to no avail. Hoping to figure out the cause, they decide to investigate the mysterious forest. There, a lumberjack explains how Wulf had been cursed by the fairy spring he had stepped into while gathering fruit. Ultimately, the crew's search for a cure comes up empty.

One day without warning, Wulf's fluffy coat mysteriously transforms into one that is hard and spiky.
Wishing to help their werewolf friend, the crew try their hardest to coax his fur back to normal.
Renie: This time for sure...
Renie uses a magic tool to heat the needle-like hairs while carefully brushing Wulf's coat.
Lyria: Wow! It's working!
Renie: And... Done!
Wulf: ...
Vyrn: Did it work?
Wulf: ...!
Vyrn: Guess not...
Renie: Nothing we do helps...
The crews attempts at washing, caring for, and even trimming Wulf's fur were all in vain, as the hair would return to its spiky state in mere seconds.
Wulf: Something is clearly wrong here. No one knows my coat better than Renie, and even she can do nothing.
Wulf: Maybe somebody cast a curse on me while we were distracted.
Lyria: Do you have any idea why this happened? Like some attack from a monster or something unusual you ate...
Wulf: Hm. Something I ate? What did I eat again...
Wulf: Oh no!
Lyria: What's wrong?
Wulf: We brought back some fruit from the forest we were investigating earlier!
Vyrn: Ah, you mean that orangey stuff? We ate it too though...
Lyria: Are you saying that fruit might've been cursed?
Wulf: It's possible.
Wulf: Visiting that forest was the only thing we did that was out of the ordinary.
Renie: But the rest of us are fine. And besides, if the fruit really were dangerous, I'm sure you'd pick up on it.
Wulf: It could be that it affects each of us differently. That said, we should look into it at once.
  1. Let's go!

Choose: Let's go!

The crew returns to the sparkling pond in the forest, where the mysterious fruit tree was found.
Wulf: They were growing from those branches over there. I'm sure of it.
Lyria: Hrm... Nothing looks off to me...
Lumberjack: Huh? Aren't you the guys from before?
Renie: It's a person!
Lyria: O-oh, um... There's nothing to be afraid of! We're...
Although Wulf moves to protect the crew, he quickly notices the lumberjack is barely fazed by his presence.
Lumberjack: Are you trying to figure out how to cure your condition?
Wulf: Wha... How did you know?
Lumberjack: One look at you tells me more than enough. Sigh... What a pitiful state you're in...
Lyria: Do you know why he's like this?
Lumberjack: Not exactly, no. But this forest has always been a bit strange.
Lumberjack: For instance, the "old fairy spring" over there is said to be cursed.
The lumberjack points at the glistening pool at the base of the fruit tree.
Renie: You're taking a bath here?
Wulf: The cause wasn't the fruit, but the water!
Lyria: So... your coat became all spiky after taking a dip in this pond?
Lumberjack: Hm? Spiky? What are you talking about?
Renie: Huh?
Lumberjack: According to the folktales, whatever poor soul falls into this water will turn into a beast!
Lumberjack: That's why you look the way you do, no? To think the folktales were true... How terrifying!
All Four: ...
Wulf: No, I'm actually—
Lyria: Y-yeah! That's exactly it! Ahaha!
Vyrn: Uh-huh! We sure are in a pinch! Isn't there some way to turn our friend back to normal?
Lumberjack: None that I know, at least... I'm sorry I can't be of more help.
Wulf: (Aside from my spiky fur, this is how I've always been...)
Having decided against clearing up the misunderstanding, the crew watches as the lumberjack leaves.
Wulf: Thank you all for bluffing on my behalf.
Renie: So it's the water that's cursed.
Upon closer inspection, the group discovers that the water's mysterious sparkle came not from the sun, but the pond itself.
Vyrn: Still, if the curse is supposed to turn a person into a beast, how come Wulf's coat ended up like this? It's totally off.
Wulf: Maybe it's because I'm already a werewolf.
Vyrn: Talk about a sloppy curse...
Lyria: Anyway, let's figure out how to undo it!
Hoping to fix his fur, Wulf tries submerging himself in the pond once more, but to no avail.
He also consults the various mages and doctors aboard the airship. However, as night falls, it becomes clear that no one is able to help him.

A World Beyond Fluff: Scene 2

Seeing Wulf feel down about his coat, Renie reassures him that she doesn't mind either way. That night, however, she sleepwalks through the airship in search of fluff. She then awakes to realize she doesn't like her companion's new fur and struggles to come to terms with this new reality.

Lyria: We tried asking around, but it doesn't seem like there's an easy way to fix the problem.
Lyria: Not only is the curse pretty old, it wasn't placed on you using any normal methods...
Wulf: Does that mean I'm stuck like this forever?
Lyria: D-don't give up yet! I'm sure we'll find a way to bring you back to normal!
Vyrn: Yeah. And besides, even if you were stuck like that... I dunno, couldn't you just pretend it's a new furstyle?
Wulf: I prefer my old coat though.
Renie: It's nothing to feel so down about. It should wear off sooner or later.
Renie: You may have lost your fluff, but... I don't mind your spikes either.
Wulf: But I thought you loved my fluffy coat.
Renie: Fluffy, spiky—who cares? You're still you, and that's what matters.
Wulf: ...
Wulf: Thanks. I feel a bit better now.
Wulf: It's time for me to chin up and look for a way to fix my coat—for Renie's sake.
Vyrn & Lyria: Nice!
Yeah!
That night...
Wulf: Snore...
Renie: Mmgh...
As always, Renie is sleeping while cuddled up next to Wulf.
With a look of relaxation and ease, she turns over to bury her face in his neck.
Renie: ...
Renie: Ow...
Renie: Fluff... Need fluff...
Renie groggily gets up, opens the door, then wanders out into the hall.
Tom: ...
Renie: Sixty fluff points...
Ewiyar: ...
Renie: Seventy-two fluff points...
Lyria: Hff...
Renie: Not fluffy... Silky... Nice too...
Lyria: Fwah?
Renie: Huh?
Finally waking from her daze, Renie stares at Lyria's hair spilling out of her hands and comes to a realization.
Renie: Ah... N-no...
Renie: There's no way!
Lyria: Hngh... Mmgh...
Renie: (Did I only care about fluff?)
Renie: (Regardless of whose it is?)
The young girl then dashes out of the room, her heart screaming as she loses herself to the airship's deafening silence.

A World Beyond Fluff: Scene 3

Renie dreams about her past of being judged by her outer appearance, then wakes to realize she had treated Wulf the same way. Overcome with guilt, she tries to avoid her companion, but Wulf quickly locates her and shares his feelings. The two then promise to stick together, fluff or no fluff. However, the next day, Wulf's coat returns to normal—much to Renie's chagrin.

Man's Voice: Here, Renie. I got an outfit for you. Isn't it cute?
Renie: (I don't like this pattern though.)
Renie: Thanks, Uncle Simon.
Man's Voice: Haha, it's just a hand-me-down from my daughter. It might end up suiting you better, considering how pretty you are!
Renie: (How ridiculous...)
Woman's Voice: Good morning! We have wheat bread and north barley bread today... You want the barley one—right, Renie?
Renie: (I'd rather have the wheat bread.)
Renie: Yes, please.
Woman's Voice: I thought so. It's your favorite, after all.
Woman's Voice: If you eat too much wheat, your pretty little face will end up round and chubby! Ohoho!
Renie: (This tastes so bland.)
Renie: Everybody's always assuming things about me... They don't care about what I think.
Renie: Mgh...
Renie: Huh? This place is...
Waking to find herself in a chilly storage unit, Renie slowly recollects the events of the night prior.
Renie: Oh, right... I left Wulf behind.
Renie: All this over his fur turning spiky...
Renie: What's wrong with me? This just makes me the same as them...
Renie sits on the floor, arms wrapped around her knees—when suddenly, she hears the sound of approaching footsteps.
Lyria: Ah, Renie! There you are!
Renie: ...
Renie: Why are you here?
Lyria: When we woke up this morning, you were gone, so everyone's been looking for you. Wulf was really worried too!
Renie: Wulf...
Renie: I don't want to see him.
Lyria: Huh?
Renie: Not today. Leave me alone.
Lyria: Um, but... I thought today was important for both of you.
Lyria: We even went shopping to buy that special soap for him...
Renie: He... doesn't need this anymore. I only got it to help with his fluff.
Renie: But it's pointless now. Nothing we do to fix his coat works...
Lyria: ...
Lyria: I disagree.
Renie: Wha?
Lyria: It doesn't matter if he can't use it. You bought the gift because you were thinking of him.
Lyria: So it's not pointless at all!
Renie: But I—
As Renie hangs her head, she suddenly hears another round of familiar-sounding footsteps.
Wulf: Renie! Finally!
Renie: Wulf... And (Captain) too...
Vyrn: So this is where you dozed off... Makes sense why we couldn't find ya. Did you sleepwalk here or something?
Wulf: Are you okay? You must've been freezing...
Renie: Please. I'm perfectly fine.
Wulf: I see. That's a relief...
Reassured of his companion's safety, Wulf straightens up and takes on a softer tone as he speaks to Renie.
Wulf: Renie, there's actually something I'd like you to have.
Wulf then reveals an ornate, shiny brush. As Renie glances at it, her eyes widen in shock.
Renie: Is that... a silver brush?
Wulf: I asked (Captain) and Vyrn to secretly buy it for me yesterday.
Wulf: I know it won't be very useful, considering the current state of my fur, but... I still wanted to give it to you.
Wulf: Because today is the anniversary of the day you found me, Renie—and that won't ever change.
Renie: ...
Renie: I'm sorry, Wulf. About yesterday...
Renie: Your coat became all spiky, so I left you...
Wulf: Hm?
Wulf: Are you saying the reason you left the room in the middle of the night... was because my fur felt weird?
Seeing Renie nod, Wulf is momentarily surprised. However...
Wulf: Hah...
Wulf: Haha! Hahahaha! So that's why! I'm thrilled to hear it!
Renie: Huh? How come?
Renie: Even after I went and said how you're still you, regardless of your fluff?
Wulf: But the truth is you don't like how I am now, right?
Wulf: That's why I'm happy. It means you loved my fur that much.
Renie: ...
Wulf: Just like how you love my coat, I love spending time with you, which includes getting brushed and cuddled.
Wulf: If it's my fluff you like, I'm more than happy to be as fluffy as I can be.
Renie: Ah...
Renie: Wulf likes cuddling with me too, so he'd appreciate a gift like this the most.
Suddenly reminded of her present, Renie pulls out a small box from her pocket and hands it to Wulf.
Wulf: Is this... soap?
Renie: I bought this... because I thought it'd make you happy.
Wulf: Heh...
Wulf: Thanks. I appreciate it.
Renie: (Ah, I get it now...)
Renie: (I really was thinking about Wulf from the very start.)
Renie moves toward Wulf and holds him in a tight embrace, ignoring the feeling of spikes on her skin.
Renie: Even if you stay spiky forever, I'll stay right by your side.
Wulf: That means a lot coming from you, Renie.
Seeing the two friends make up with a hug, (Captain) and the others can't help but smile.
The following day...
Wulf: ...
Renie: ...
Wulf: I don't know why, but when I woke up, my coat was back to normal...
Renie: ...!
Renie: Go away!
Wulf: Renie! Wait!
Wulf: Reniiie!
It takes a while to calm Renie down again, but at the end of the day, neither gift goes to waste.
In fact, Renie later continues teaching Lyria how to improve her brushing technique.

A World Beyond Fluff: Scene 4

Some time later, Wulf and Renie visit an island with the crew and are shocked by the werewolf-like beings walking about. The Grand Uplift had brought earthdwellers to the Sky Realm, allowing Wulf to now live a normal life. When asked about her plans, Renie shares her intent to remain aboard the Grandcypher for the time being as she's not finished teaching Lyria proper brushing technique.

As the months go by...
The crew visits a nearby town together with Renie, who appears to be holding the hand of a giant shadow.
Wulf: ...
Wulf: Well I'll be...
The Crimson Horizon's ascension had brought about drastic changes in the Sky Realm—an event otherwise known as the Grand Uplift.
Ever since then, various creatures from the Earthen Realm sought refuge on a number of the floating islands.
Renie: There's other people who look like werewolves...
Lyria: They're called Wolvir! When I first saw them, I immediately thought of Wulf.
Lyria: With them around, he wouldn't stand out at all even when walking about town!
Wulf: ...
The wary Wulf slowly strolls forward, one careful step at a time.
Although he feels the gazes of others, he detects no animosity from the pedestrians going about their daily lives.
Even so, Wulf is overcome with an anxiety caused by the indifference toward his presence.
Wulf: Does this mean I'm finally able to walk around with Renie in public?
Wulf: Can I exist without hiding out of sight or constantly being on alert?
Renie: Wulf can live... normally?
Noticing Renie suddenly grab his sleeve, Wulf gently pats her head.
Wulf: It's okay, Renie. I'm not going anywhere.
Renie: I know.
Wulf smiles briefly, then asks Renie a question, his expression quickly turning to one of resolve.
Wulf: So Renie, what are your plans from here on out?
Wulf: With the world how it is now, we can live wherever we like.
Vyrn: Oh, right. You two were lookin' for a new home, weren't ya? Guess everything worked out, huh?
Lyria: You don't mean...
Wulf: I don't mind us disembarking to live elsewhere—if that's what you want.
Renie: ...
Lyria: Sniffle... Renie...
Renie: Sigh...
Renie: I never said I'm leaving.
Renie: I mean, your brushing technique is still awful, Lyria.
Renie: I have to show you how to do it properly.
Lyria: ...!
Lyria: Renie! Thank you so much! I promise I'll keep practicing!
Renie: You're still a ways off though.
Wulf: (Which means Renie will be here until she's satisfied.)
Hearing Renie's decision, Wulf then turns to face (Captain).
Wulf: I guess that's that. Looks like we'll be sticking around for a while longer.
Wulf: I ask that you take good care of Renie for the duration of our stay.
  1. I hope you make friends too.

Choose: I hope you make friends too.

Wulf: Me? Make friends?
Lyria's Voice: Renie, let's go shopping! Apparently they sell stuff from the Earthen Realm here!
Renie's Voice: Don't just decide on your own... Jeez...
Wulf: Heh. I guess I should.
Wulf watches the two girls running ahead and smiles.
Wulf: I can't say... I ever gave it much thought.
Renie's Voice: Wulf! Hurry up.
Wulf: Right. I'm coming.
A gentle breeze brushes up against Wulf's coat—his pride and joy.
No one knows what sort of experiences the skies will bestow upon the two companions from here on.
However, the girl and her werewolf will continue moving onward—together with (Captain)'s crew—to a new world.
