Hunter × And × Fantasy

After getting used to life in the Sky Realm, Gon and Killua continue to look for a way back to their own world. When Hazen mentions a mountain pass rumored to be connected to another dimension, Gon and Killua decide to take a look, despite stories of a vicious beast in the area. Hazen tries to convince the two to turn back after sensing a powerful threat, but Gon's determination for adventure eventually convinces him to join them on their quest.

It's a warm, sunny day on the Grandcypher.
Gon: Hah!
???: Urk...
Gon is busy fighting yet again.
Hazen: (Every swing of his fist carries tremendous force! His dexterity at such a young age is impressive...)
Gon: You're mine!
Gon: Huh?
Hazen: Whew, victory. That's three wins for me.
Gon: Rrg... Dang it! I was even paying extra attention!
Gon: Thanks for the fight!
Much time has passed since Gon and Killua started sailing with the crew.
Seeing Gon's interest in the happenings of the Sky Realm, various crew members with relevant expertise have agreed to teach him their own strengths in combat.
One of them is Hazen—a wind priest with extensive experience in training soldiers.
Gon: Hazen-san, what was that magic just now? You summoned wind without even using your staff!
Hazen: I was discreetly engraving a few simple circles during the battle.
Hazen taps a part of the deck with his staff, sending a gust of wind blowing from a hidden magic circle.
Gon: Whoa! I didn't know you could do that!
Hazen: If you'd paid just a little more attention, you would've noticed me tampering with the floor.
Hazen: Keep a close eye on your opponent and you won't get caught off guard like this.
Gon: All right! I'll catch it next time for sure!
Killua: I'm back...
Gon: Oh, welcome back, Killua! How'd it go?
Killua: This island's got nothing. No info whatsoever on the primal beast that can cross dimensions.
What're you up to today?
Gon: Practicing how to fight against magic!
Hazen: Would you like to join us, Killua?
Killua: No thanks. It's got nothing to do with Nen anyway. So what's the point?
Gon: We've only ever trained to fight using Nen, right?
Gon: They might not use Nen in this world, but they've got a ton of other powers. I thought it'd be good to know how to deal with those.
Gon: Besides, it's super interesting! There's so many ways of fighting I'd never even imagined!
Killua: Seriously, Gon?
Gon: Wh-what?
Killua: Don't go forgetting our real goal! We need to get back to our own world!
Killua: You're not gonna be able to find your dad if you get caught up with stuff in the Sky Realm!
Gon: I-I know that! But there's nothing we can do if we don't have any hints yet!
Hazen: ...
Killua: Ugh, if only they had the cybernet here. Then we could just look up "different dimension" and "how to go back" and be done with this.
Hazen: Hm. It's possible we can do just that.
Gon & Killua: Wha?
Hazen: Due to my occupation as a priest, I'm rather familiar with legends from various regions, you see.
Hazen: Oddly enough, you hear stories of portals to different worlds here and there. Those may prove helpful.
Killua: Folklore, huh? That's a good call. I was so focused on finding out about primals, I didn't even think of that.
Killua: Fine, let's hear it. Not like we're short on time.
Hazen: Actually, there's a similar legend around the mountains of this island. Would you like to go take a look?
Gon: You bet!
Gon and Killua follow Hazen to the island and begin looking for clues. However...
Villager: Climb the Catus Pass? That's crazy! You wanna die or what?
Gon: ...
Ruffian: There're easier ways to get yourselves killed, y'know.
Killua: ...
Elderly Lady: Ehehe. You'll find out when you get there.
Elderly Lady: That's the domain of the onyx beast. An outlandish area where no other monsters dare tread...
Hazen: ...
Hazen: Such unsettling rumors... What is the meaning of all this?
Killua: Not too much different from the rumors about my place.
Gon: Are you sure we didn't get the name and location wrong?
Hazen: Yes, I'm sure. This is definitely the right island...
Killua: So what kinda place is this Catus Pass anyway?
Hazen: Legend has it that long ago, a god possessing powers far greater than mortals descended onto this mountain.
Hazen: After talking with the people, the god eventually returned to the other world from the mountain once more.
Hazen: It's said that the door between worlds still exists to this day, connecting these skies to the dimension in which the god resides.
Gon: If the story's actually true, then that door could be a way to cross dimensions, right?
Killua: I don't know... It's nothing but a fairy tale with zero credibility.
Killua: But... we've got no other leads. I hate grasping at straws like this, but I guess there's no harm in taking a look.
Hazen: It's completely different from the rumors. There was no mention of an onyx beast before!
Killua: Well, the farther legends travel from where they originate, the more they change.
Killua: Personally, I think finding something scary's better than having nothing at all.
Gon: That's true. The lady even told us where the entrance to the pass is.
Killua: Maybe they added to the story to make the place sound more exciting—you know, for tourism and stuff. Anyway, let's go check it out!
Hazen: (How are these children so courageous...)
As it turns out, the mountain is far more than what the stories say.
Gon & Killua: ...
No sunlight reaches the pass. The path is unlit and the iron gates long-rusted.
The air around them is stale as they walk, until they reach a giant tree that appears to have been twisted off at its base by some mysterious force.
Gon: Killua...
Killua: Yep.
Killua: There's something here. Something bad.
Their senses prickle at the unseen threat, telling them not to proceed any further.
Hazen: We should turn back.
Hazen: You can feel it, right? It isn't safe here. This isn't a place where mortals should be.
Gon: Yeah. There's no signs of any living thing... but somehow, I can sense a strong thirst for blood.
Killua: ...
Hazen: I suggested this place hoping to help you lost children...
Hazen: But it was a mistake. We should stop here and try something else.
Gon: ...
Gon: No, I want to keep going!
Hazen: I know you're desperate to find something, but don't be rash.
Gon: I'm a professional Hunter.
Gon: Things might get dangerous, but if you aren't ready for adventure, you'll never get anywhere!
Hazen: There may not be anything for you here.
Gon: New discoveries don't happen when you look for something you already know exists.
Gon: And besides, you led us here because you believe there's a chance of us pulling through, right?
Hazen: Dear me... What have I done?
Gon: Don't worry! I'll head back if things get really bad!
Killua: (He's definitely not going back.)
Hazen: Oh, all right.
Grasping his staff tightly, Hazen swiftly waves it at Gon and Killua.
Killua: Wha!
Gon: Magic!
Hazen: It's a doctrine that works against poison. You were about to charge straight into the venomous air without any sort of defense.
Hazen: You leave me no choice but to stay with you until this is all over.
Gon: ...!
Thanks, Hazen-san!
Killua: What d'you know? The guy gets it after all.
Hazen: ...

Hunter × And × Fantasy: Scene 2

At the mountain, the onyx beast attacks Gon and company, who manage to defeat it eventually. However, the beast continues to come back to life, each time stronger than before. As the three grow exhausted, a battered Hazen tells Gon and Killua to retreat while he himself will act as decoy, but Gon insists on pushing forward together.

Gon: Hey, Hazen-san. Are there bandits in this world too? Like on Greed Island?
Hazen: Greed Island?
Hazen: (I wasn't aware of such an island in Phantagrande...)
Hazen: Every mountain has its bandits and dangers, though I doubt there are any on this one.
Gon: That's so cool! Let's go look for some later, Killua!
Killua: You're gonna get yourself robbed again.
Gon: Huh? That was just a one-off accident!
Hazen: Why do you look so happy about it?
Killua: Hey, you sense that? The bloodlust... It's getting close!
Gon: ...!
When the beast finally reveals itself, Gon and company find nothing about it that resembles any living creature.
Onyx Beast: ...
Gon: Wha...
In front of them is a wriggling mass of darkness that barely appears as a beast on four legs—with no color, shape, or warmth.
It manifests without a sound, emitting an evil, vicious aura.
Hazen: What... is this!
Gon: Definitely not an animal. It's not breathing, and I don't hear its heartbeat.
Killua: Just to make sure... Is this thing a primal beast?
Hazen: No... I've met my fair share of primal beasts, but this creature is somehow different in essence.
Hazen: Yet, I don't sense any magic from it. There's none of the miasma that monsters have either.
Hazen: As far as I know, it's an existence that greatly contradicts the laws of the skies.
Onyx Beast: ...
Gon: Then this is our chance!
Hazen: ...!
What did you say?
Gon: I mean, the fact that this beast is here means this mountain really does connect to some other world, right?
Killua: It's still too early to say, but I think there's reason enough to look into it.
Killua: I'm all for this now. Let's take down this thing and find out what exactly it is.
Hazen: What magnificent mental strength. It tempts me to open my eyes, despite preferring them closed most of the time.
Hazen: I appreciate the opportunity. I, too, will take on the challenge!
Hazen: Let's do this together!
Gon & Killua: Yeah!
Onyx Beast: ...!
Just as Gon and company ready themselves for battle, the ferocious beast pounces at them.
Killua: Urk...
Hazen: Killua!
Killua: (It's unbelievably fast! A small graze did this?)
Killua: Gon! It's headed your way!
Onyx Beast: ...!
Gon: Whoa!
Gon jumps back, dodging the beast's attack. The strike carves a gaping hole in the ground where he had been standing, toppling nearby trees.
Gon: Ack! That's some heavy damage.
Killua: But that seems to be about all it's got. The creature's charging straight into things—pretty much like any average wild beast.
Killua: Hopefully it doesn't have some kind of weird power like the monsters on Greed Island...
Killua: Do you!
Evading the beast's strike this time, Killua grins.
Onyx Beast: ...!
Killua: And down it goes.
Hazen: A wire trap with a yoyo? When did you set that up?
Killua: When I got blown away the first time!
Onyx Beast: ...!
Gon: First comes rock!
Hazen: (He's already within arm's reach of the beast! The boy's quick on his feet...)
Gon: Rock... Paper...
Gon: Rock!
Onyx Beast: ...!
The air, the ground, and even the mountain itself tremble from the mighty force of Gon's attack.
The beast's shifting body bursts and becomes liquid, its dark droplets raining down on the forest.
Hazen: (Killua could see through the creature's simple movements from its first strike, and set up a trap accordingly.)
Hazen: (Gon was able to pick up on Killua's plan without any strategy or signal, and got up close to the beast in an instant.)
Hazen: (Normally, this sort of teamwork's only possible through a deep connection—something built over a decade.)
Killua: We never really understood what that thing was, but it was an easy win for us in the end.
Killua: Sorry, man. Did we steal the spotlight from you?
Hazen: Haha, now I know why the two of you seemed so confident.
Hazen: It's because you have a teammate you're perfectly in sync with and can trust completely, right beside you.
Hazen: You two make a great pair.
Killua: ...
Yeah.
Gon: ...
Killua: Ready to go, Gon?
Gon: Hmm... Something felt kinda off back there.
Killua: Hm? What d'you mean?
Hazen: ...!
Watch out!
Onyx Beast: ...!
Killua: Wha!
Hazen: Just in time!
Killua: What's going on? I thought we killed it!
Gon: Is this another one?
Hazen: It appeared the moment we looked away. Get ready, both of you—the barrier won't last much longer!
Onyx Beast: ...!
Gon & Killua: Not so fast!
Gon and Killua immediately leap in to deflect the attack, and the beast collapses once more.
But then...
Killua: What's with this thing!
Hazen: The destroyed parts of its body are coming together again... Is it reviving itself?
Killua: What, like an amoeba? Damn it! I'll tear it to as many pieces as I can!
Killua: No way... Is it immortal?
Hazen: It indeed defies the laws of the skies... A monstrous beast!
Onyx Beast: ...!
No matter what they do, the onyx beast continues to revive itself, coming back stronger every time.
Gon and company are growing exhausted as they find themselves caught in a never-ending predicament.
Hazen: Rrg... Huff...
Killua: Ugh... Damn, this thing won't give up!
Killua: (We can't even retreat now... How did it end up like this? At this rate we're gonna...)
Onyx Beast: ...!
Gon: ...
Hazen: Gon. Killua. Listen closely—I'm going to buy us some time.
Hazen: The two of you descend the mountain first. I'll retreat after that and catch up to you!
Killua: Don't be ridiculous. You're running out of stamina too, aren't you?
Hazen: Haha, I suppose I can't hide it from you. You're right that the situation's getting dangerous... but it's nothing more than that.
Hazen: I am a priest and an adult. No dilemma is too difficult when it comes to protecting innocent children like yourselves.
Gon: You can't!
Killua & Hazen: ...!

Hunter × And × Fantasy: Scene 3

Gon has the feeling that they can get past the beast without defeating it. With Killua's help, he confirms his suspicion and steps between Hazen and the onyx beast, successfully stopping their fight. From his experience growing up with animals, Gon senses that the beast is trying to protect something. With adequate communication, the beast calms down and leads Gon and company to the top of the mountain.

Gon: You're the one who said you'll stay with us until the end, Hazen-san.
Gon: There's no way we can leave you all by yourself here!
Hazen: But someone needs to take up the job, or we won't be able to escape this situation.
Gon: No one needs to do that!
Gon: We've come this far. We're gonna reach the top—all three of us together!
Killua & Hazen: ...
Hazen: Erm... Did you hear what I just said?
Killua: Are you hearing yourself? We're up against a monster that's immortal!
Killua: I hate the idea of leaving without a win, but we need to retreat and think of a new plan! We can't beat it if we don't know how...
Gon: Well, about that...
Gon: I think we can keep going without having to defeat the beast.
Killua: Wha!
Onyx Beast: ...!
As the onyx beast continues its frenzied attacks, Hazen uses his magic to produce a strong wind that shields the group and forces the creature back.
Hazen: Without defeating it, you say?
Killua: You got something up your sleeve?
Gon: I don't know if it'll work... but it's better than leaving someone behind!
Onyx Beast: ...!
Killua: (We don't have time to listen to Gon's plan in full...)
Killua: Tell me what I need to do.
Gon: Head to the mountain peak!
Gon: Even if the beast starts attacking, don't worry. You'll be just fine!
Killua: All right, I trust you!
Without hesitation, Killua follows Gon's advice and dashes up the mountain trail with his innate speed.
Onyx Beast: ...!
Hazen: Wha... W-wait!
Immediately the beast shifts its attention from Hazen to Killua and charges at the boy.
Gon: (I thought so!)
The creature throws itself at Killua with agility unlike anything it had displayed before.
Killua: Gwah!
The beast closes in on Killua as he lies on the ground, letting out an unearthly howl.
Onyx Beast: ...!
Killua: ...!
Killua: (I get it now!)
Hazen: You...
Hazen: You monstrosity! Turn and face meee!
Onyx Beast: ...!
Sensing Hazen's deadly fury, the onyx beast prepares for its next assault.
Hazen: Get away from hiiim!
Onyx Beast: ...
Gon: Wait!
Hazen: ...!
Out of nowhere, Gon steps between Hazen and the onyx beast, his arms stretched out to stop them.
Gon: Guh...
Hazen: Wha...
Onyx Beast: ...?
Hazen: Why... are you defending the creature!
The beast is still, its claws lodged into Gon's back but not piercing through him.
It, too, appears taken aback by Gon's unexpected behavior.
Gon: It's... okay! As long as we're not hostile toward it, the beast won't attack!
Gon: It doesn't want to kill us!
Onyx Beast: ...
Hazen: I don't believe it... Its bloodlust has subsided.
Hazen: Is this part of your so-called Nen ability?
Gon: No. It's just that I spent a lot of time with animals in the forest growing up.
Gon: So I know how to soothe them when they're agitated.
Hazen: Animals? But you're the one who said this wasn't an animal!
Gon: That's what I assumed at first... but then I realized that it has the heart of an animal, at the very least.
Onyx Beast: ...
Gon: I watched it for a while and thought it was kind of strange.
Gon: It kept its back to the mountain peak even while fighting, and it seemed to look back from time to time...
Gon: That's when I realized, it was kind of acting how animals do when they're protecting their young.
Gon: So I had an inkling... and now I'm sure of it, thanks to Killua.
Killua: What do you mean I'll be "just fine"? You put my life on the line, you moron!
Gon: Ow!
Despite giving Gon a sharp poke, Killua shrugs.
Killua: Well, but when the thing charged at me, I realized it too... that it'd been holding back all this time.
Hazen: What do you mean?
Killua: Even though speed's my forte, the beast caught up to me in no time. That means it could've made us its dinner whenever it wanted to.
Killua: But it only showed its true abilities when it went out of its way to switch targets and go after me.
Killua: In other words, the beast's only chasing away anyone who tries to climb the mountain. That's what Gon wanted to confirm.
Hazen: You were able to discern that much about an unidentified creature... from such subtle behavior?
Gon: It's thanks to all the training I did with you!
Gon: You taught me that it's important to observe when I don't know much about the opponent.
Hazen: Haha... Goodness, you two never fail to surprise me.
Hazen: Regardless, Gon—the way you intercepted earlier is in no way acceptable.
Hazen: If your guess had been wrong, you would have ended up with a hole in your stomach! You can't be that reckless.
Gon: You too, Hazen-san.
Hazen: Hm?
Gon: You got so angry while trying to protect us.
Gon: But if that had continued, both you and the beast would've ended up in worse shape.
Gon: I didn't want you two getting hurt more than you already were! That's when my body just moved on its own.
Hazen: You were worried about me? And this beast as well?
Killua: Heh...
Killua: Forgive him. This guy's an idiot.
Gon turns back to the beast, which continues to watch the group cautiously.
Gon: I'm sorry we kept hurting you. But we've got business on this mountain.
Gon: I promise we won't harm what you're trying to protect.
Gon: So, please. Can you let us go to the peak?
Onyx Beast: ...
Gon: It wants us to follow it.
Gon and company follow the onyx beast, slowly climbing higher and higher up the sacred mountain.

Hunter × And × Fantasy: Scene 4

At the peak, the three find the corpse of a giant that appears to have come from a different world, much like the onyx beast. Though there had in fact been a portal, it appears to no longer be functioning. On their way back, Hazen feels responsible for giving Gon and Killua a false lead. But Gon remains resolute and explains how there is value even in the search. Touched by the strength of the two Hunters, Hazen promises to accompany the pair on the rest of their hunt.

Killua: What's this? Some sort of ruins?
The onyx beast leads them to a ruined structure, in the middle of which lies a single, decaying corpse.
Killua: The guy's huge... Gotta be about five meters tall.
Gon: One, two, three... He's got more arms than the average person.
Gon: Is this who you wanted to protect?
Seating itself near the body, the beast moves what appears to be its head up and down as if to nod.
Hazen: Six arms and a giant stature beyond mortal understanding... Could it be?
Hazen: These characteristics match the description of the god from the legend perfectly!
Gon & Killua: ...!
Hazen: Look over there. Is that... a machine?
Hazen points to an enigmatic shape floating in the air, comprised of a multitude of small cubes.
Numerous cubes are also scattered across the floor of the site, seemingly damaged.
Hazen studies the floating shape for a while before shrugging.
Hazen: It's definitely not something from the Sky Realm.
Gon: You can tell?
Hazen: If we had any sort of technology that could make things float without any power, we wouldn't need airships.
Killua: Hmm, makes sense...
Killua sweeps his gaze across the ruins, looking slightly disappointed.
Killua: From what I see, I'm guessing the legend was true—everything except the important part.
Killua: The god in the stories did come from a different world, but it never returned.
Killua: With its way back destroyed, it remained here and eventually died without anyone knowing. That's probably what happened.
Killua pokes at one of the cubes on the ground. It rolls across the dirt, showing no sign of flying ever again.
Hazen: Then this beast...
Killua: Must've been his pet or something. Dunno.
Gon: So they couldn't go home...
Onyx Beast: ...
Gon: Hey.
Onyx Beast: ...?
Gon: We'll definitely find a way to cross dimensions.
Gon: And when we do, I promise we'll help you and your friend go back to your own world.
Gon: Do you think you can wait until then?
Onyx Beast: ...
The onyx beast nods. Soon after that, Gon and company part ways with the creature and descend the mountain.
Killua: Sigh. All that for nothing, huh?
Gon: Guess we're back to square one.
Hazen: ...
Hazen: Gon. Killua. There's something I need to tell you both.
Gon: You sound so serious. What's the matter?
Hazen: I'm sorry.
Hazen: Not only did I put you both in danger, but instead of giving you hope of returning to your world, I did the exact opposite.
Hazen: I'm ashamed that I wasn't able to help at all.
Gon: ...?
Killua: What're you talking about?
Hazen: Huh?
Killua: So you're saying you feel responsible for all this.
Killua: You think it's your fault that you led us into danger in hopes of finding a way back, but the whole plan backfired.
Killua: Well, if you think that's enough to get us down, then you're wrong.
Gon: Yeah. Plus, we made an important promise. We're not about to give up just 'cause it didn't work the first time!
Hazen: But you're on a mission to look for your father in your own world, right?
Hazen: I could see your resolution! You were filled with determination to find clues here.
Hazen: Aren't you sad or angry at all?
Gon: Hmm... It's hard to explain.
Gon: I think... the real value's not only in finding Ging, but in the entire process of looking for him.
Gon: That's why even if I don't find him right away, I don't think any of this is a waste.
Hazen: ...
Killua: After all... we're pro Hunters!
Hazen: Hunters...
Hazen: In that case, I'll stay with you until the end! I suppose that's the only path left for me.
Gon: ...!
Thanks, Hazen-san!
Killua: Hey, so you get us after all.
Hazen: ...
Hazen: As an adult, I should've done all that I could to stop Gon and Killua. But for some reason, I couldn't bring myself to.
Hazen: It wasn't out of compassion that I let them go their way. Rather...
Hazen: I misunderstood.
Hazen: I should apologize... for treating the two of you like children. You've both got good heads on your shoulders.
Gon & Killua: ...
Hazen: So I was thinking, if you'd allow me...
Hazen: I'd like to continue accompanying you on your hunt. What do you think?
Gon: Of course you're welcome to!
Killua: You owe us a good lead next time, Hazen.
Hazen: Haha...
Hazen: You're both amazing, you know that?
In distant skies, Gon's adventure continues as he encounters new friends.
Together, they travel the vast world, their possibilities expanding far beyond the horizon.
