Kappa Summer Chronicle - Opening

Kyuta, a boy with impish features, runs out of a cave after an argument with his father and accidentally plunges into the waters below. Meanwhile, the crew are enjoying their time on Venera Beach, eagerly awaiting Tono Island's Riverfolk Festival later that day.

An underground cave, with a chill that belies the midsummer night outside, comes alive with the chatter between a parent and his child.
???: Kyuta, you finish sweeping the cooking area yet?
Kyuta: All done. Made sure to take out the trash too!
???: Good... I still have work to do, so go wash your head dish and get some sleep.
Kyuta: Kappa? You won't be sleeping today either, Pappa?
Kyuta's Father: Hasuo and Yoshiko are still toiling away. Wouldn't be right for me to be the only one taking it easy.
Kyuta: ...
Kyuta: Um, Pappa... Why don't you try asking the boss for some time off?
Kyuta: You work so hard every single day from morning to night. At this rate...
Kyuta's Father: And he works even harder.
Kyuta's Father: I need you to understand that we're just doing what we can to pay him back for all that he's given us.
Kyuta: B-but... We all used to play together so much more before.
Kyuta: We even had sumo tournaments every month!
Kyuta: Haha. Those were fun times, Pappa... I still remember how you tossed the boss around during matches...
Kyuta's Father: Ugh, for crying out loud!
Kyuta: Eep!
Kyuta's Father: Things are different now! Stop clamoring and get to bed already!
Kyuta: Kyuu!
Kyuta: Fine! Be like that, Pappa!
Kyuta's Father: Kappa! Where do you think you're going!
Kyuta: Kyuu... I ran all the way out here, but now...
Kyuta: Kappappappa! There's no ceiling?
Kyuta comes out to a rocky cliff along the coastline. For the first time in his life, he takes in the beauty of a starry night sky.
Kyuta: Kappa... I wonder if those shiny rice grains might come raining down...
Kyuta: Mng... My neck hurts from looking up.
Rubbing his neck, Kyuta drops his gaze ahead to find a vast stretch of deep blue ocean.
He peers below the cliff to find undulating waves crash against the rocks, turning themselves into a fine spray.
Kyuta: Oh no! The water's alive, kappa!
Kyuta: Pappa...
Kyuta: ...
Kyuta's Father: Things are different now! Stop clamoring and get to bed already!
Kyuta: I know Pappa means well, but I just...
Kyuta: Kappa!
A startlingly loud explosion accompanied by bright, shimmering lights from a nearby beach causes Kyuta to fall on his backside.
Man 1: Heh, not bad.
Man 2: Just the place to launch the fireworks for the show!
Kyuta looks on timidly at the commotion on the beach, but the darkness makes it difficult to make out anything.
Kyuta: (Wh-what was that about! Did those people make that big bang?)
Kyuta: (Mm... I should get back...)
Kyuta: Kappa?
An enormous shadow suddenly emerges. Shocked at the sight before him, Kyuta slips and falls into the ocean below.
Kyuta: Kappoo!
Kyuta frantically splashes about, but having never learned to swim, he is quickly swept into the open sea.
Before long, Kyuta is no longer visible from the cliff he fell off of.
Vyrn: Whew, we got here way earlier than expected.
In the first hours of sunlight under the clear, blue sky, (Captain) and company take in the calm waves and soft, white sand.
They are at Venera Beach in the Auguste Isles—a popular resort destination for skyfarers all over.
With the shark incident resolved, the crew are here to continue enjoying their summer vacation.
Things get more and more lively as familiar faces continue to pop up.
Vane: Yodel-ay-hee-hoo!
Vane: Wahaha! Sunshine and beach as far as the eye can see—man, I could stay here all day!
Lancelot: Likewise! But isn't yodeling more of a mountains thing?
Lancelot and Vane are, respectively, the captain and vice-captain of the Order of the White Dragons—defenders of the kingdom of Feendrache.
They are staying in Auguste for some time to inspect the security measures taken at nearby tourist attractions.
They've taken some time out of their busy schedule to enjoy a day of fun and games with (Captain) and company.
Percival: Would it hurt you to be silent for once, mongrel? Don't expect me to help if you get too ahead of yourself and end up drowning.
Vane: Hah, look who's talkin'! You seem ready to party hardy yourself, Percy!
Percival: I'm merely dressed for the occasion. Or is that too difficult a concept to grasp for a simpleton like you?
Cassius: Ah, so I see that lightweight garments providing ample breathability are well suited to hot and humid climates, especially since they assist with avoiding direct exposure to sunlight.
Cassius: Most logical indeed.
Percival: Hm... You must be Cassius. Unlike this mongrel over here, I'm glad to know you're an understanding one.
Lancelot: Ah! Looks like you've found your latest vassal candidate, Percival.
Cassius: Vas-sal?
Siegfried: Anyway, (Captain), how are you enjoying the vacation so far?
Vyrn: It's been a blast!
Vyrn: We did have to deal with falling meteors and flying sharks. But other than that—
Beatrix: Ahaha! Meteors? Flying sharks? You're not fooling me with jokes like those!
Lyria: Ehehe...
Beatrix: Wait, you're not fooling me?
Zeta: Geez, (Captain)... It's like every time you take a summer vacation, you get dragged into some bizarre mess.
Zeta: Well, at least you got this year's mess out of the way early... Now all that's left is to enjoy the rest of your vacation. You deserve it, Captain.
Sierokarte: Teehee. Nice to see everyone's already here.
Kaz: Long time no see! Glad to see you all in good spirits.
Sierokarte and Kaz wave as they approach.
They've been assisting with the crew's vacation plans and lodging.
Lyria: Thank you so much for helping us on top of your beach house duties!
Sierokarte: It's always a pleasure! Besides, the beach house is practically on autopilot this year.
Sierokarte: I've partnered with the local tourism association, and thanks to my connections at the Knickknack Shack—
Ghandagoza: Sunbeams drenched in the gentle sea breeze glisten over my undraped body!
Ghandagoza: I, Ghandagoza, am ready to start the day!
Vyrn: Oh look! It's the big old guy!
Ghandagoza: Gahahaha! I'm brimming with vim and vigor now that I've changed into my formal swimwear!
Ghandagoza: The sea pulsates with fish of every shape and size! The time has come to test their mettle!
Lyria: And off he goes...
Sig: Hey, guys! Are we going fishing already? Well, don't count me out! I'll be the first to land a catch!
Vyrn: You too, Sig? Sure is lively in the morning around here...
Kaz: Hahaha! Just wait till you see Tono Island's Riverfolk Festival—now there's lively!
Tono Island is an islet only a few hours away from Venera Beach by boat.
Sierokarte has planned for the crew to arrive there in the afternoon and take part in the festival.
Vyrn: I hope they've got food stalls galore! Hehe, any chance they'll have candy apples?
Lyria: Yakisoba, buttered potatoes, fried squid, hot dogs... I'm already hungry just thinking about it!
Sierokarte: At Tono Island, they enjoy a traditional cuisine known as sushi, which uses raw fish.
Sierokarte: It's been trending for the past few years. People flock from all over just for a taste!
Cassius: Hm, how intriguing. You don't cook the fish before eating it?
Kaz: Nuh-uh, it's so much better raw! You really ought to have a taste yourself to see what I mean!
Lyria: Wow! This sushi thing sounds great! We'll definitely have to try it out, (Captain)!
Kaz: Well, I'd better go prep your boat to Tono Island! I'll come get you when it's ready.
The crew decides to while away the time before gathering at Sierokarte's beach house later for lunch.
Their hearts filled with anticipation for exhilarating summer fun, they move further down the coastline to start the day.

Kappa Summer Chronicle - Chapter 1: Green Encounter - Episode 1

While waiting for Kaz to come pick them up with his boat, (Captain) and the dragon knights play a game of beach flags to decide on their lunch. In the meantime, Zeta, Beatrix, and Cassius take a tour of the various food stalls.

Siegfried: Beach Flag Tournament: The War to Decide Lunch, Round 1...
Siegfried: Ready...
Siegfried: Go!
The Three: Raaargh!
  1. Raaargh!

Choose: Raaargh!
Lying prostrate on the sand only moments ago, the four immediately rise at Siegfried's mark and make a mad dash toward the flag planted ahead.
It all began roughly half an hour ago, just as (Captain) and company were taking a break from recreation.
They broach the idea of making lunch themselves.
Percival: Seafood would be best... I suggest demonbream poele or roasted prawn.
Lancelot: A full-fledged dish like that would require a lot of prep work. How about something simpler, like a barbecue?
Vyrn: I'm up for curry! Curry with chunks of apple, that is!
As they bounce ideas off of each other, Siegfried comes up with a more unique proposal.
Siegfried: We could discuss this for hours, but that wouldn't make it much of a vacation, would it?
Siegfried: How about we play a few rounds of beach flags to decide who should have the final say on the matter?
Percival: Beach flags?
Siegfried: Yes. I read about the sport in a tourist pamphlet. It seems especially popular among beachgoers.
Siegfried opens up a booklet with a tropical beach pictured on the cover.
Percival: Let me see that... "Get in the zone with a game of beach flags, and rekindle friendships so they shine brighter than the morning sun!"
Percival: What rubbish... The heat must have fried the brain of whoever wrote this...
Vane: Man, this takes me back! Whoever came out on top in our sparring matches got to decide on the mini-meals we'd have during our breaks!
Lancelot: Yes, I remember. We did that a lot whenever we trained together!
Vyrn: Sounds good to me. Hehe, hope you're ready to take home the trophy and get me some apple curry, (Captain)!
Percival: This is preposterous. To duke it out over the lunch menu is an absolute farce.
Vane: What's the problem, Percy? Don't think you can win?
Percival: Whoever thinks I won't win has it coming. Get ready, Vane, you're going to have legs like seaweed when I'm done with you.
Vane: S-seaweed?
Siegfried: I'll be the referee. It'll be easier for me to be impartial since I don't have any particular dishes in mind.
And thus begins a game of beach flags on this hot summer day.
Lyria: I'll be cheering for everyone! Good luck!
  1. ...!

Choose: ...!
The four contestants sprint toward the flag, but (Captain) loses speed early in an attempt to dodge a certain obstacle.
Vyrn: What the... What's that thing by (Captain)'s feet?
Lyria: A crab came out of the sand!
Percival: It's just like (Captain) to be so gentle to even the little resident of the beach... Tough luck!
Lancelot: Hope you don't mind me going ahead, (Captain)!
Vane: Whoa! Lancey and Percy are fast!
Lancelot: Percival, you sure are taking this serious for something you called "preposterous"!
Percival: Of course. The Lord of Flames would never back down from a challenge on the scorching hot summer beach!
Lancelot & Percival: Haaah!
Siegfried: ...
Siegfried: And the winner is... Vane!
Vane: Whoo, I did it!
Percival: I-impossible! He pushed past both me and Lancelot?
Lancelot: Brilliant comeback, Vane!
Vane: Heheh! Looks like I'm not the one with seaweed legs now!
Siegfried: So how about it? Now that you've all had a chance to get into the zone with a game of beach flags, were you able to rekindle your friendships so they shine brighter than the morning sun?
Percival: Enough of that meddlesome talk. Vane, can you get on with the lunch menu already?
Vane: Ah, right!
Vane: Ahem, here I go. I choose...
Vane: Rice balls!
The cheery Vane makes a V sign with his sand-covered hands.
Meanwhile, Cassius gazes upon the various food stalls out on the beach.
Cassius: Hm, are those grilled rice balls? To apply additional heat to rice that is already prepared is a most curious culinary technique.
Beatrix: Sniff, sniff... Is that a grilled rice ball vendor? Mm, the brown crisp of the soy sauce smells so good!
Zeta: We're gonna be having lunch with the crew soon. You'd better keep your appetite in check.
Beatrix: Yeah, yeah, I know! We're here on a mission after all! Geez, can't a girl get a whiff of some yummy food?
Beatrix: Snuffle...
Aaah...
Cassius walks around observing the various food vendors. And not too far from him walk Zeta and Beatrix.
Zeta and Beatrix are members of the Society, an organization in direct confrontation with forces that have set up headquarters on the Moon.
Cassius is an agent from that Moon.
The crew worked with him on a case to combat a common enemy.
Having lost his means of transportation back to the Moon following the resolution of that incident, Cassius came to live in the world of the skies under surveillance of the Society.
Beatrix: Who would've imagined Cassius of all people would ask to go on vacation.
Zeta: He did mention wanting to know more about how fossildwellers spend their time off.
Zeta: No thanks to that, half of our job here is chaperoning him... But a job's a job.
Beatrix: C'mon now, you're being too harsh! It's a whole new world for Cassius, and it's up to us to make sure he gets the support he needs!
Beatrix: Not to mention Sergeant Ilsa drilled home the point that she wants a pair of eyes on Cassius at all times.
Zeta: Ahaha! So that's the reason you're acting all scaredy-cat about this. I guess we can't ignore a direct order from Sergeant Ilsa after all...
Beatrix: Hey, who are you calling a scaredy-cat!
Some distance ahead of them, Cassius continues to stroll about the rows of food stalls.
Zeta: He's really starting to fit in.
Beatrix: Haha! Can't say I'm surprised after we found him lined up for ramen, and he was like "I keep finding myself here before I notice" with a straight face.
Cassius: Hm, it appears the end of the line is here.
Beatrix: And look at him now, the way he lined up over there just now was—
Zeta: Gah, now he's the one after those grilled rice balls!
The two hastily call out to Cassius.
If only to remind him that they should get back to the beach house soon for lunch.

Kappa Summer Chronicle - Chapter 1: Green Encounter - Episode 2

While the crew is having a rice ball party—as decided by Vane, victor of the beach flags tournament—Sig and Ghandagoza make a grand entrance with a giant catch from the seas. Elsewhere on the beach, Gabriel and Europa sense something foreboding in the waters just as they are getting up from their beach chairs.

Lyria: Nom, nom... This tuna salad is delicious!
Cassius: Ingredients stacked on a boundless number of plates, mountains of rice, seaweed... What is happening?
Vane: Ooh, you're back! We're having a rice ball party!
Cassius: A rice ball party?
Vane: Oh right... You're not from around here.
Vane: You know what a rice ball is, right? How about a party?
Cassius: Yes, I am well accustomed to both concepts. That is why I am confused.
Beatrix: Hm? What do you mean?
Cassius: Rice balls are made by pressure-folding cooked white rice into a triangular shape, and they form the basis for what's known as grilled rice balls.
Cassius: And a party, as far as I've been made aware, is a social gathering held for some specific purpose, such as a celebration or fund-raising.
Cassius: What confounds me is the purpose of this particular party. Have we come together to celebrate the manufacture of rice balls?
Beatrix: That's one way of putting it! But you're thinking way too hard about this, Cassius! We're just here to have a good time!
Cassius: Hm, I believe I now understand the objective of this party. Very well... I, too, shall participate.
Vane: Glad to hear it! We've got ingredients of every kind, so take your pick and munch away!
Percival: Heh, perfection—even if I do say so myself.
Lancelot: Mm, that smells so good. What did you put in there?
Percival: Roasted prawn, seared to a perfect crisp using my powers of flame.
Lancelot: Ah, roasted prawn is what you suggested from the get-go! You must've really been pining for it.
Percival: Of course not. It's just the most appropriate filling when it comes to rice balls.
Lancelot: Really? This is the first I've heard that one. Surely you just had a craving?
Percival: You've said enough, Lancelot... Don't expect me to give you a single bite!
Vane: Whoa... Siegfried, are those clams you're packing?
Siegfried: Salty-sweet simmered abalone, to be precise. They go well with rice balls.
Vane: Now you've got my mouth watering! Any chance I can get a bite?
Siegfried: Of course. I'd love for nothing more than the host of this party to sample my goods.
Vane: Gee, thanks a bunch!
Vane: Nom, nom...
Vane: ...!
Siegfried: Well? Does it not suit your taste?
Vane: This is finger-lickin' good!
Vane: You've done it again, Siegfried! I've never had a better rice ball!
Vane: We should set up shop in Feendrache right away!
Siegfried: Come now, isn't that a bit over the top? I'm just glad you enjoyed it, Vane.
Sig & Ghandagoza: Hope y'all didn't wait long! We're baaack!
Sig and Ghandagoza show up at the beach house, hauling an enormous fish.
Lyria: Wow! It's huge!
Sig: Ghandagoza's no joke! He nearly split the ocean apart with his bare palms and out came flying this giant catch! I haven't had this much fun fishing in a long time!
Ghandagoza: Mwahaha! I offer you the same praise, lassie. Your skills and resolve are nothing short of extraordinary.
A ray of sunshine over their faces, the two exchange a mirthful handshake.
Vyrn: Well, good to know you two are getting along fine...
Cassius: Exactly 120 seconds have elapsed over the low flame... It appears nicely charred. Perhaps it is ready for consumption.
Beatrix: Sniff... Whatever that smell is, it's amazing!
Beatrix: Wowie! Look at all those tiny rice balls!
Zeta: What's going on here?
Cassius: I am grilling balls of rice.
Zeta: Like... No, duh! What I wanna know is why you have so many of them.
Cassius: Ah... I was thinking of adjusting the amount of soy sauce and heat applied to each one, and comparing their tastes.
Cassius: Even if the ingredients are the same, I wondered how the flavor might vary depending on the cooking processes employed.
Zeta: Seriously, does everything have to be spelled out for you? Don't tell me you plan on starting your own rice ball stand or something!
Cassius: Hm? I'm not sure why you would think that, but no, I have no such plan in motion.
Elsewhere on the beach, two visitors lie stretched out under a parasol.
Gabriel & Europa: ...
The primarch Gabriel and her disciple, Europa.
They take solace in simply watching the revelry of the mortals around them.
Europa: Gabriel. Are you feeling thirsty?
Europa: They have a celebrated drink here called Blue Auguste. If you'd like, I can buy us some...
Gabriel: Thanks, Europa. I'll come with you.
Skirt Chaser: Why, hello there, ladies! How'd you like to—
Skirt Chaser: Nguh!
The overly friendly man is awestruck at the sight of the two, snuggled closely together.
Gabriel: Teehee, I heard that drinks taste so much better when you line up for them.
Europa: Is that so? I see. I will be glad to accompany you.
Skirt Chaser: (S-such beauty! Beauty beyond what any mortal could possess! Absolute beauty... lies before my very eyes!)
Skirt Chaser: (How could I even think to speak to such divinity... What a grievous sin I've committed!)
Skirt Chaser: F-forgive me!
The man bows deeply before going into full flight in the opposite direction.
Europa: ...?
Did that man just apologize to us?
Gabriel: I think he might've wanted to talk, but I guess we'll never know now.
As they rise from their beach chairs, a concerned expression begins to spread on both their faces.
Gabriel: Europa. Can you feel that?
Europa: Yes... I can sense the ripples in the water.
Gabriel: Perhaps a sign of something to come...
The primarch and disciple watch the lively activity around the beach closely.
???: Kyuu...

Kappa Summer Chronicle - Chapter 1: Green Encounter - Episode 3

After finishing lunch, (Captain) finds the impish boy Kyuta collapsed by the rocky shore. Kyuta is especially wary after being nursed back to health at the beach house, but he slowly warms up to the crew after a taste of (Captain)'s rice balls.

(Captain) and company finish their rice ball party.
While waiting for Kaz to come pick them up, they muck about around the perimeter of the beach house.
Vyrn: All righty! Comin' in first!
Lyria: No fair, Vyrn! You're the only one who gets to fly!
As they run across the crowded beach, (Captain) notices something in the distance by the rocky coastline.
???: Kappa...
  1. ...?

Choose: ...?
Vyrn: Hm? What's wrong, (Captain)? Something catch your attention?
  1. You got that right...
  2. Oh, it's nothing!

Choose: Oh, it's nothing!
Lyria: Haha, you're obviously worried, (Captain). It's written all over your face.
Choose: You got that right...
Vyrn: Something by the rocks? Let's go check it out!
They approach an empty part of the beach where the craggy rocks are and notice a figure.
Kyuta: Kyuu...
The three of them find a green creature roughly the size of Vyrn washed up on the shore.
Vyrn: What the... I've never seen anything like it.
Kyuta: Pa... ppa...
Vyrn: Whoa! This thing can speak?
Lyria: He seems to be in pain. I wonder if he drifted all the way here.
  1. Let's help him out!

Choose: Let's help him out!
Without hesitation, (Captain) carefully picks up the creature—Kyuta—and rushes him to the beach house.
After putting him to rest by the shade, (Captain) gives him some water and waits by his side for him to come around.
Shortly after, Kyuta slowly opens his eyes.
Kyuta: Mng...
Lyria: Thank goodness! You're awake!
  1. Are you okay?

Choose: Are you okay?
Kyuta: Huh?
Kyuta: (Where... is this? So many... people...)
Kyuta: (O-oh no... Have I been captured?)
Kyuta leaps straight up but immediately wobbles back to the ground.
Kyuta: (Kappa... I can barely move!)
Sig: Hey, you're gonna wanna take it easy. You're completely worn out.
Kyuta: (Kyuu... I need to get away fast!)
Kyuta: Kappa!
Just as things are getting tense, the growl of Kyuta's stomach fills the air.
Percival: Looks like you could use some food.
Kyuta: ...
(Captain) makes a small rice ball on the spot.
Kyuta: (Kyuu? Rice and... nori?)
After preparing a few different ones, (Captain) hands them to Kyuta.
  1. Eat whichever ones you like.

Choose: Eat whichever ones you like.
Kyuta: Gulp...
Kyuta: (No, I can't! Who knows what they put in them...)
Siegfried: ...
The Three: ...!
Seeing Kyuta's response, Siegfried signals to Lancelot, Vane, and Percival.
Siegfried: I'll have one, (Captain).
Siegfried: Not bad. Glad to know it's just kelp inside—no poison in it at all.
Lancelot: Lucky you, Siegfried! That looked so good! I guess I'll have one too!
Vane: Me three! Man, it's gonna be hard to pick one out from this bunch!
Percival: Hey. You'd better hurry before these fellows eat up all the food.
Kyuta: Kappa!
Stirred by Percival's words, Kyuta desperately clutches a rice ball and flings it into his mouth.
Kyuta: (Kappappa! What did I just do...)
Kyuta: Ka...
Kyuta: Kappaaaa!
Kyuta: That was so good! It has this nice, sour taste! I've never had anything like it!
Vyrn: Haha, glad to hear it! Nice to know you can talk too!
Kyuta: Uh-oh!
Lyria: Haha... You must've gotten the one with pickled plum!
Kyuta: Huh?
  1. Have as many as you'd like.

Choose: Have as many as you'd like.
Kyuta: Kappa?
Kyuta: Okay, just a bit then...
Though hesitant at first, Kyuta soon gobbles up one rice ball after another.
Seeing Kyuta slowly recover, the crew breathes a sigh of relief.

Kappa Summer Chronicle - Chapter 1: Green Encounter - Episode 4

Startled by the sight of a cat, Kyuta curls up in a box. But when he sees the cat struggling to haul the giant fish brought in by Sig and Ghandagoza to its kitty friends, he comes out to fillet the fish at lightning speed. Kaz then appears and realizes Kyuta may very well be a kappa.

Kyuta eventually finishes every last variety of rice ball that (Captain) made.
Now that things have settled down a bit, Kyuta is ready to speak to the crew.
Kyuta: Burp... Those were really good. My name's Kyuta.
(Captain) and company introduce themselves in kind.
Lyria: As skyfarers, we travel around a lot. But we're here on vacation right now.
The crew members shed more light on who they are.
Kyuta: K-Kappa? Skyfarers? So you're not people?
Lyria: Um...
Lyria: How should I put this... We work as skyfarers, but we're all people!
Cassius: However, seeing as I do not hail from this world, to label me as a person could potentially be a grave misconception.
Kyuta: Kappappa? So I was right? You're not people?
Beatrix: Yeah, yeah, we get it, Cassius! You're not making things any easier, you know! Why don't you try to stay quiet for a bit!
Kyuta appears to have no inkling of what skyfarers are, any major place names, nor many other things that most would consider to be common knowledge.
The crew struggles to explain it all to their new green acquaintance.
Cat: Meow.
Kyuta: Kappappa?
Lancelot: Hey, pussycat! Here to play with Kyuta?
Kyuta: Kyuu? Wh-what in the seas is that!
Frightened by the encroaching cat, Kyuta finds a box to hide in and leaps over.
Huddled up with his tail folded in, he makes sure to cover the dish on his head with both hands.
Kyuta: Kyuu! It has four legs!
Cassius: It appears that in order to fulfill a fear quota, he curls up into a ball and finds a small space to hide in. What a fascinating behavioral response.
Beatrix: Heheh... Kyuta? Quota? Have you actually discovered how to pun?
Cassius: That was not my intent.
Lyria: He must be afraid of the cat. I hope it wasn't too big of a shock...
Kyuta: (C-cat? Pappa talked about them before...)
Kyuta's Father: Whew... Spent the entire day on this, but I'm still only half done. Probably shouldn't have taken that catnap.
Kyuta: Catnap? What's a cat?
Kyuta's Father: K-kappa... Come to think of it, I've never seen one myself.
Kyuta: (I never found out what a cat is...)
Kyuta timidly pokes his head out from the box to get a look at the feline wonder.
The cat approaches the massive catch brought in by Sig and Ghandagoza and licks it every which way.
Sig: You want some of this fish, little guy? Too bad I don't have the size cleaver you'd need to serve it up right now.
Cat: Meow...
As if to urge preparation of the fish for consumption, it moves over to (Captain) and nudges up against the captain's feet.
It turns out that a small clowder of kittens is watching from the shadows.
Kyuta: (Oh... It's for his friends?)
Kyuta: ...
Lyria: Look, Kyuta came out of the box!
Kyuta: I'll borrow that knife.
Kyuta grabs an ordinary knife from the desk and stands before the fish far larger than himself.
Kyuta: Hyegh!
One blur of speed and a moment later, five large pieces of chopped fish lie before the crew.
Sig: Holy moly! Even a master chef would struggle to take apart such a thick, bony fish!
Kyuta: H-here...
Kyuta picks up a piece and hauls it over to the cats.
Cat: Meow.
The pussycat snuggles up to Kyuta in appreciation.
Kyuta: Kyuuuu!
Lyria: Ahaha... He's all curled up inside that box again.
Kyuta: (Four legs, so fluffy too... How is that possible!)
Kyuta: (And its little feet are so soft and pillowy...)
Kaz: Guys, the ship's ready—
Kyuta: Kyuu?
Kaz: Goodness gracious! You must be...
Kaz: A kappa!
Vyrn: Kappa?
Kyuta: Kyuu? That's right. I'm a kappa!
The crew looks on in confusion as a quizzical Kyuta gives a quizzical answer.

Kappa Summer Chronicle - Chapter 2: Call Me Kyuta - Episode 1

According to Kaz, kappa are fabled creatures of Auguste. "Riverfolk" is another name for them, with the Riverfolk Festival held in their honor. Hoping to find clues there on how Kyuta can get back home, the crew invites him along for the festival.

The crew makes for the Riverfolk Festival at Tono Island on Kaz's boat.
The azure ocean glitters with the color of the sun's rays as the boat moves briskly along.
Kyuta: Ugh... I don't feel so well...
Sig: Feeling seasick already? Can't help it if this is your first time. It's the sea's rite of passage.
Kyuta: Kyuu... I'm feeling dizzy...
Kyuta has his reasons for accompanying the crew on this trip.
Vyrn: So what's a kappa anyway?
(Captain) and crew learn from Kaz that Kyuta is a kappa.
But as no one seems to know what exactly that is, they ask Kaz for an explanation.
Kaz: Kappa are creatures of legend spoken of in Auguste folklore.
Kaz: They're said to be meek, green, and with a dish on their heads. But I've never met anyone who's actually seen them in person.
Though Auguste folktales make numerous mentions of kappa, the creatures are long believed to have gone extinct.
Kaz: Tono Island is said to be the birthplace of kappa lore.
Kaz: In fact, the "riverfolk" in "Riverfolk Festival" is another name for them.
Sig: Riverfolk, riverfolk...
Sig: Ah, I remember now. I heard about them as a kid.
Sig: That they can't get enough of cucumbers, and they dwell in the rivers.
Kyuta: I love cucumbers! But I've lived in a cave all my life.
Vyrn: A cave? What were ya doin' out at sea then?
Kyuta: I had an argument with Pappa... It was the first time I ever left the cave.
Kyuta: I saw shiny things go bam-bam and was so surprised I fell down into the sea... Next thing I knew, I was in that rocky part of the beach.
Kyuta: Hey, you think I can get back to the cave if I cross the ocean? I can stand a bit of saltwater if that's what it takes!
Percival: Not likely. In fact, until we know which island you came from, I'd say it's impossible.
Kyuta: Kappa? Are there that many islands out there?
Percival: More than one could count, if you include the smaller ones. And to then narrow it down to one particular cave, it seems rather hopeless.
Kyuta: Kyuu... Does that mean I'll never see Pappa again?
Itching to do something to allay Kyuta's fears, (Captain) speaks up.
  1. Let's go to Tono Island together!

Choose: Let's go to Tono Island together!
Kyuta: Kappappa?
Lyria: Yeah! We can't just leave Kyuta by the wayside!
Vyrn: We were goin' off to Tono Island anyway!
Vyrn: If Tono Island's the birthplace of kappa folklore, just being there oughta help us find a clue or two.
Kyuta: Wh-why are you being so nice to me?
Cassius: There is no use questioning their kindness. That is simply who they are—nothing more, nothing less.
Beatrix: Heheh! Looks like you're finally getting it, Cassius! Kindness is as kindness does.
Kyuta: Are you sure it'll be okay?
(Captain) gives an emphatic nod and a thumbs-up.
Kyuta: Kyuuu!
Kyuta leaps at (Captain)'s waist with a hug, swinging his tail left and right.
Kyuta: Thank you so much, (Captain)!
Just as the crew is getting excited, Lancelot comes forward with an apology.
Lancelot: Sorry, (Captain)! Vane and I have a meeting we can't miss on the main island tomorrow morning...
Lancelot: But we'll try to research old records on kappa in between our work duties.
Vane: Mm-hm! I'll go around asking if people might know something about kappa!
Percival: I have connections with council members in Venera Beach and the capital, Mizarea.
Percival: I'll do what I can to look into the matter on my end. And I'll keep Kyuta in mind in my negotiations.
Percival: Finding his home is the utmost priority, but we must be ready if that should fail.
Lyria: Wow! You really thought this through, Percival!
Vyrn: You okay with doing all that on your own?
Percival: I'm not the one you should be worried about. I'll be fine.
Vane: Haha, Percival's just the guy you wanna have around when you're in a pinch.
Percival: I have discussions concerning recent developments that may affect the Marmok Protection Pact. This kappa business is something I can handle on the side.
Kyuta: Thank you so much, everyone!
Lancelot, Vane, and Percival part with the crew for the time being, each eager to assist Kyuta in whatever way they can.
Soon after, (Captain) and company embark on the ride to Tono Island.

Kappa Summer Chronicle - Chapter 2: Call Me Kyuta - Episode 2

The crew realize that they'll have to wait till after the festival to hear more about kappa from the locals. Seeing Kyuta's tears in his sleep, they are determined to show Kyuta a good time at the festival in the meanwhile. As the crew goes out to shop for yukatas, Sig and Ghandagoza stay behind at the inn to watch Kyuta.

The sunlight has already dwindled to a reddish line on the horizon by the time (Captain) and company arrive on Tono Island.
(Captain), Vyrn, and Lyria are resting up at the inn with Kyuta while the others go around asking about kappa.
Kyuta: Zzz...
Lyria: Teehee... Kyuta looks so relaxed in (Captain)'s arms.
Vyrn: He must've dozed off while you were holding him on the way here, (Captain).
Lyria: I'm sure Kyuta feels really relieved.
While clutched closely to (Captain)'s chest, Kyuta had fallen into a peaceful slumber.
Because he was sleeping so soundly, (Captain) and company decided to stay behind with him at the inn.
Siegfried: We're back.
Siegfried, Zeta, Beatrix, and Cassius enter the room.
Lyria: Welcome back! Where's everyone else?
Zeta: Kaz had to meet up with people from the Fisherman's Guild.
Zeta: And Sig and Ghandagoza had other stuff to take care of.
Vyrn: Heh, I wouldn't be surprised if they went fishing again...
Vyrn: So what's the news on kappa?
Cassius: Kappa were said to be messengers of Tono Island's water god, but any details of that part of the myth have been lost over time.
Cassius: I was informed that the shrine staff who help run the Riverfolk Festival may know more, but...
Cassius: The shrine itself was empty—everyone was out helping to prepare for the festival.
Vyrn: I guess we'll just have to wait till the festival's over then!
Cassius: Yes, let us ask the concerned parties when the time comes.
Kyuta begins wriggling about in (Captain)'s arms.
Kyuta: Pa... ppa...
Tears stream down Kyuta's cheeks, landing on (Captain)'s palms.
Zeta: What's wrong? Why's he crying?
Lyria: I'm sure he still feels anxious about being outside for the first time in his life... I think I can relate, a little bit.
Siegfried: There must be something we can do to cheer him up...
  1. Let's bring him to the festival.

Choose: Let's bring him to the festival.
(Captain) exclaims that they should enjoy the festival to the fullest since their hands are tied until it ends anyway.
Beatrix: Right on, (Captain)! You said it! Since Kyuta's already out here with us, we might as well help him make the most of it!
Zeta: Hold it. Won't it cause a ruckus if word of this legendary creature's appearance spreads?
Vyrn: Seeing as how most townsfolk aren't all that familiar with kappa anyhow, it's probably not too different from seeing me out in the open.
Beatrix: Besides, if anything does happen, we'll be there to protect Kyuta.
Zeta: I just hope there's no one too troublesome to deal with—like a biologist or historian.
Zeta: Ah well, what's the worst that could happen? If that's the plan, why don't we go pick out some yukatas to wear for the festival? I spotted a nice shop earlier.
Zeta: These things are more fun when you dress for the occasion!
Beatrix: Sure, I'm up for it! Can't have a festival without yukatas if you ask me!
Cassius: What's this yukata you speak of?
Siegfried: I'm wearing one right now. Yukatas are soft to the touch and provide great breathability—perfect for the summer.
Siegfried: And if you have the right belt to go along with it, you can even pack a sword.
Zeta: Yukatas keeping you cool is one thing, but the huge variety of styles and designs is more my jam. They're all so adorable.
Cassius: I see. I can't speak much on stylistic matters, but it does seem rather logical to wear such a garment in a hot and humid environment.
Ghandagoza: We haave retuurrrrnnned!
Sig: Watch it, Gramps! You're gonna wake up Kyuta!
Ghandagoza: Ngh! What a foul thing I've done... Forgive me.
Lyria: Sig, Ghandagoza! Where did you two go?
Ghandagoza: We heard rumors of a monstrously large yet delicious fish in the nearby waters.
Sig: No way we could let sleeping fish lie on a rumor like that, so we poked around for more info and got ourselves some more fishing gear.
Sig: Anyhoo, you guys mentioned yukata shopping?
Sig: Since we gotta get our fishing equipment in order anyway, why don't you go on ahead with that? We'll watch Kyuta in the meantime.
  1. Thanks!

Choose: Thanks!
(Captain) gently hands Kyuta over to Sig.
Sig: Aww... Look at that widdle sleeping face...
Siegfried: Sorry to leave it all to you two, but do you mind if I go do some shopping of my own?
Vyrn: Hm, what for? You've already got your yukata.
Siegfried: You'll see soon enough.
Leaving Kyuta to Sig and Ghandagoza, (Captain) and company set out shopping for yukatas.

Kappa Summer Chronicle - Chapter 2: Call Me Kyuta - Episode 3

Having heard rumors of a huge, fearsome fish dwelling in the nearby waters, Sig and Ghandagoza are preparing their fishing gear when Kyuta wakes up. Sig takes the opportunity to tell Kyuta what festivals are like, but ends up only adding to Kyuta's fear of the unknown. Just then, (Captain), Vyrn, and Lyria return with their yukatas.

The crew realize they must wait until after the festival to learn more about kappa.
In hopes of cheering Kyuta up with a lively, fun time at the festival, (Captain) and company go shopping for yukatas.
Meanwhile, Sig and Ghandagoza stay at the inn to keep watch on Kyuta while prepping their fishing gear for the following day.
Kyuta: Mng...
Sig: Hey there. You awake already?
Kyuta: Kappa! Sig!
Kyuta abruptly leaps away from Sig's chest; the momentum causes him to bump into Ghandagoza.
Ghandagoza: Mrgh!
Kyuta: I-I'm sorry...
Ghandagoza: Mngh!
Kyuta: Did that hurt?
Sig: Gramps is meditating for the next fishing session.
Kyuta: Meditating?
Kyuta: Hey, where did (Captain) and everyone else go?
Sig: Oh, them?
Sig explains that the others have gone shopping so that they can all enjoy the festival together later.
Kyuta: Festival? What's a festival?
Sig: It's an event where lots of people come together to have a grand ol' time.
Sig: From food stalls to parade floats to dances... It's the biggest event of the year for many people!
Kyuta: It must be really loud...
Sig: People hauling the parade floats are shouting the entire time. And the crowds around the food stalls are always so lively.
Kyuta: Kyuu!
Sig: Sigh, there you go balling up again—hiding in a bucket this time.
Sig: We use that one for fishing. Bet it smells like the sea, right?
Kyuta: ...
Sig: Need some alone time huh... Guess I'll get my own preparations going then.
Kyuta: (Things are so much better when it's nice and quiet...)
Ghandagoza: Mnmgh!
Kyuta: Kyuu!
Kyuta: (Ghandagoza's meditation sounds just like Pappa snoring...)
Kyuta: (I hope Pappa's doing okay...)
Kyuta: Um, Pappa... Why don't you try asking the boss for some time off?
Kyuta's Father: Things are different now! Stop clamoring and get to bed already!
Kyuta: Kyuu... If only I never said that...
Sig: Hm, what should I start with... I can work on the net later. Let's see what we have for hooks.
Sig neatly lines up the many fishing tools. Curious about the sounds she is making, Kyuta takes a quick peek out of his basket.
Kyuta: (Kappa? That hook is so big and thick...)
Sig: Quite the curious one, aren'tcha?
Kyuta: Kappa! N-not at all!
Sig: Haha, that so? Well then, I'm gonna do some bragging, if I can bother you to listen for a bit?
Kyuta: Sure...
Sig: This fishing hook's custom-made by the Druga Pirates. After a bite, this barb here makes it impossible to shake out. Brilliant piece of work, wouldn't ya say?
Kyuta: Fishing... hook?
Sig: All right, so you don't know how fishing works. Not what I expected after seeing you chop up that fish, I'll admit.
Sig: How it works is you put bait on the hook, like this. Then when the fish goes for the bait, the hook digs into them. Once it does, we can just reel 'em in.
Sig: There's stuff like harpoons and nets too, but this is the most basic of basics.
Kyuta: Kappa... What's the long stick for?
Sig: It's a fishing rod. We attach one end of a string to it, the other end to a hook.
Sig: It's made to be real flexible. Can't afford to have it snap when your prey tries to break free.
Kyuta: Kappa!
Sig: Wow, you're just dying of curiosity... Tell you what—why don't you come out with us on our next fishing run?
Kyuta: N-no thanks!
Kyuta: I heard that you have to risk your life if you want to catch the bigger fish.
Sig: Yeah, there's some danger in it, but all the thrills you get are more than worth it!
Sig: I'm already raring to go just thinking about it.
Kyuta: K-kappa? But if you just want food, smaller fish work just as well...
Kyuta: Why put yourself in danger?
Ghandagoza's eyes open up in response to Kyuta's words.
Ghandagoza: There are things in life you can attain only by facing difficult trials head-on!
Ghandagoza: To simply live without purpose is to die.
Ghandagoza: That is why we fight! That is why we fish!
Kyuta: Kyuu?
Vyrn's Voice: Heyo! We brought back a little something for you guys!
Unable to fathom Sig's and Ghandagoza's musings, Kyuta cocks his head in confusion.
Just then, (Captain) and company return with their yukatas.

Kappa Summer Chronicle - Chapter 2: Call Me Kyuta - Episode 4

Sig tries to instill some courage in the unnerved Kyuta with a pep talk. Siegfried then appears with a bear mask for Kyuta to wear at the festival. With some encouragement from the rest of the crew, Kyuta musters up the resolve to tag along for the night.

Lyria: Ta-da! How do I look?
Ghandagoza: You are the epitome of elegance! It suits you well!
Lyria: Ehehe, thanks!
Lyria: We all bought one!
Gran is the Main Character

Sig: Looking snazzy, (Captain)! That's a really refreshing design you went for!
Djeeta is the Main Character

Sig: Cute as could be! You look so good in it, it's like they made it with you in mind!
Lyria: That's for sure! Zeta and Beatrix helped us pick them out!
Sig: They did a fine job at it.
Sig: Where did they and Cassius go off to anyway?
Vyrn: They went ahead to the festival! The food vendors have already set up shop!
Lyria: Teehee! Kyuta, let's go ahead and meet up with them!
Kyuta: Kyuu...
Lyria reaches out with a wide smile. However, Kyuta simply stares at Lyria's hand with a conflicted expression.
Kyuta: I heard festivals are really noisy... And I don't know anything about food stalls, parade floats, or dances.
Kyuta: It scares me. So many new things outside the cave...
Kyuta: Not having a ceiling, seeing that cats have four legs, being rocked about by a boat...
Kyuta: The sea was so salty I thought I might die...
Kyuta: I'm not sure I can handle a festival. What if it's even scarier?
Sig: Haha... What a silly thing to say.
Sig: Keep thinking like that, and you'll never know all the fun stuff out in the world!
Kyuta: ...!
Sig: Sometimes, you just gotta take a leap of faith and see what life has to offer. Accept the challenge, and the opportunities will come.
Kyuta falls silent at first but quickly retorts.
Kyuta: You're only saying that because you can do it!
Kyuta: If I tried to take on a giant fish, I'd just get eaten!
Kyuta: What if I end up failing? What if nothing is fun?
Kyuta: I'm perfectly fine with my small fish... I don't need to go out there!
Sig: ...
Sig: You know, Kyuta. I mess up all the time too.
Kyuta: Kappa? No way!
Sig: No, really. There was one creature I hunted for ages, and I never caught it until I met (Captain).
Sig: I lost count of how many times I botched that up. I started to hate myself...
Sig: But that's also what made me stronger in the end. The bitter regret I felt each time convinced me to try harder every chance I got.
Sig: What I learned from those failures is a treasure I'll never stop cherishing. And those failures never would have happened had I not at least tried.
Kyuta: Treasure?
Sig: Even if you try and mess up, there's always something to be gleaned from it.
Sig: Call it experience, knowledge, or what have you. Whatever it is, it changes you.
Sig: That's why I'll never stop dead in my tracks. I'll always take on the challenge no matter how scared I am.
Kyuta: Sig...
Kyuta: But I...
Siegfried: Here, try this on. Should take some pressure off.
Kyuta: Kyuu?
Siegfried walks in holding a mask made to look like a bear.
Siegfried: I bought it from one of the festival stalls. Cute, isn't it?
Siegfried: With this, you'll be just another festivalgoer like anyone else. You'll fit right in.
Kyuta: It's such a small mask. You got this for me?
Lyria: Everything's going to be okay! We'll be right beside you the whole time! I promise it won't be scary at all!
Vyrn: Yeah! And don't forget they've got more rice balls and other yummy goodies at the festival!
  1. Let's go together!

Choose: Let's go together!
Kyuta: (Captain)... Everybody...
Kyuta: Kyuu...
Kyuta takes a deep breath and carefully puts on the mask.
Kyuta: D-does it look weird?
Siegfried: Looks great on you. You make for an excellent cub.
Lyria: Mm-hm! You're adorable!
Kyuta: Ehehe...
Kyuta: I'm ready to enjoy the festival! With everyone!
Kyuta beams a smile underneath his mask, invisible but unmistakable to his new friends.
And so (Captain) and company bring Kyuta to the festival grounds.
???: Cripes, disappearing at a time like this?
???: Damn you, Kyuta, where the hell did you go off to?

Kappa Summer Chronicle - Chapter 3: Riverfolk Boogie-Woogie - Episode 1

Zeta, Beatrix, and Cassius, who had went ahead to the festival, meet up with (Captain) and company. Kyuta sees how much Cassius is enjoying a candied apple and gets one of his own despite his concerns over its safety. Surprised by how deliciously sweet it is, Kyuta finds himself finally letting loose.

Kyuta: K-kappa!
The crew has come to Tono Island for the Riverfolk Festival.
People meet and mingle across the long rows of festival stalls by the entrance.
Kyuta watches with his mouth agape.
Kyuta: Kyuu... (Captain), can I hold your hand?
Kyuta takes in his surroundings while clutching tightly onto (Captain)'s hand.
Kyuta: (There's too many people! I'm going to be squished!)
Beatrix's Voice: Hey, (Captain)!
Zeta, Beatrix, and Cassius, who had come to the festival in advance, appear before (Captain) and company.
The foods in their hands and smiles on their faces suggest they've been touring the various stalls.
Zeta: Good thing we spotted you! It's so packed out here, we were afraid we wouldn't find you.
Zeta: Sig and Ghandagoza didn't come along? Lemme guess... They've gone fishing already?
Lyria: Mm-hm! They were so excited about being able to catch a big, delicious fish!
Zeta: Oh yeah? Hm, I bought a lot of this thinking Ghandagoza would love some. What now...
Lyria: That won't be a problem! I'm ready to eat lots and lots tonight!
Beatrix: That you, Kyuta? You're really rocking that mask! Looks like it was made for you!
Kyuta: Y-you think so? Ehehe, Siegfried bought it for me...
Cassius: What an intriguing confection this is. Do I lick? Or do I bite? Hm, I wonder about the most logical method of consumption.
Kyuta: Kappa? Cassius, what is that?
Kyuta reacts to the item in Cassius's grasp.
Kyuta: How does an apple get so shiny...
Cassius: An apple is coated with candy in the cooking process. That's what gives it this luster.
Vyrn: Whoa! They've got candy apples here?
Beatrix: Heheh! I made sure to get one for all of you. Except for you, Vyrn—you get three!
Vyrn: Thanks, Blue! You're the best!
Beatrix: Haha! You can say that again! I'll never get tired of hearing it!
Kyuta: Candy... apple?
Zeta: I guess it would be your first time seeing one. Wait, but you know what apples themselves are?
Kyuta: Mm-hm! Me and Pappa love apples!
Vyrn: Hehe! Welcome to the Apple Lovers' Club, Kyuta!
Vyrn: If you love apples, the candied version is gonna blow you away!
Kyuta: Kyuu... It's so shiny. Almost like it's not food.
In contrast to Kyuta's wavering, Cassius wastes no time in biting into the treat.
Cassius: I see now... I had thought it an enigma to coat a sweet apple with more sweetness in the form of candy...
Cassius: But the synergy from the snap of the hard candy shell giving way to the refreshing apple crunch, and the fusion of the differing levels of sweetness, all create an exquisite experience.
Cassius: Nom, nom... Though it contains an excess of sugar, especially given its small size, it is quite delectable. I wouldn't mind having another one.
Beatrix: Haha, quite the appetite for something you're trying out for the first time! You must really like it, Cassius!
Kyuta: It's your first time? But you didn't hold back at all...
Cassius: I fail to grasp your reasoning. What does this being my first candy apple have to do with the speed and willingness at which I chew?
Kyuta: I-isn't it scary?
Cassius: No, it engenders no fear in me. Its outward appearance and the ingredients used indicate that it's safe for consumption. Not to mention that this product is widely available.
Cassius: Do you fear candy apples, Kyuta?
Kyuta: Mm-hm...
Cassius: If that is the case, then there is no need to indulge. Candy apples do not provide the necessary nourishment for sustenance.
Cassius: On a more personal level, however, the candy apple was indeed delicious. I can also attest to the fact that it does no bodily harm.
Cassius: To be fair though, I must say that everyone has different preferences. Taste buds are not born alike. You must try it for yourself to know if you'll like it or not.
Kyuta: ...!
Sig: Sometimes, you just gotta take a leap of faith and see what life has to offer. Accept the challenge, and the opportunities will come.
Kyuta: Okay... I'll have one too!
Beatrix: There we go! This one's for you, Kyuta!
Kyuta nervously accepts the candy apple.
Kyuta: I... I'll do it!
He slides the treat under his mask, opens his small mouth wide, and bites into the candy apple.
The crunchy sensation ringing in his ears, Kyuta continues to chew.
Kyuta: Ka...
Kyuta: Kappaaaa!
Kyuta: The shiny part is so sugary, and there's a real apple inside... I've never had anything this sweet!
Beatrix: Haha... Glad to see you enjoying it so much.
Beatrix: Reminds me of the first time I met Cassius.
Zeta: Huh? Did something happen back then?
Beatrix: He was over the moon when I handed him a jam-filled bun.
Cassius: Interesting choice of words, but I do not recall reacting in such an exaggerated manner.
Zeta: Ahaha, I guess Cassius and Kyuta are pretty alike in that sense.
Zeta: You know, Cassius, you could be his mentor. You up for looking after a protege?
Kyuta: Cassius? My mentor?
Cassius: If you mean it in the sense that I am his senior, perhaps that may be suitable diction.
Kyuta: Ehehe, it's thanks to my mentor Cassius, Sig, and everyone else that I was able to eat my first candy apple!
Cassius: No, I did little of import. It was you who made the decision to act.
Cassius: They have other interesting food stalls out here as well. The crowds may be difficult to navigate, but let us proceed.
Kyuta: Okay! I'll follow behind you, Cassius!
Beatrix: Hey, don't be going off on your own! Sergeant Ilsa is gonna have my—uh, scratch that! You don't wanna get lost, do you!
Siegfried: Looks like this is gonna be a festival to remember, (Captain).
Siegfried cracks a smile. (Captain) responds in kind.

Kappa Summer Chronicle - Chapter 3: Riverfolk Boogie-Woogie - Episode 2

The crew bumps into Niyon at the festival plaza and learns from her about the island's traditional delicacy—sushi. Curious for a taste themselves, (Captain) and company line up in front of the restaurant known as Miyasato, where they stumble upon Friday.

Lyria: Yakisoba,

Buttered potatoes...
With some fried squid,

And juicy hot dogs!
Kyuta: Yakisoba,

Buttered potatoes...
With some fried squid,

And juicy hot dogs!
The crew tours the festival grounds, sampling the many different types of foods available.
Kyuta is no exception, relishing in the playful atmosphere.
Kyuta: Kyuu? Cassius, how come there's no food at this stall?
Cassius: They appear to have cotton-filled animal facsimiles along with other random assortments of toys. "Raffle draw," it says... I find myself clueless.
Beatrix: You randomly take out one ticket from that box. Choose the right one, and you'll get a prize.
Kyuta: So pick the wrong one, and you get nothing?
Beatrix: Well, yeah, that's how it works.
Beatrix: But no worries, Kyuta! It wouldn't hurt to try!
Cassius: Hm.
His curiosity piqued, Cassius's eyes dart back and forth between the various prizes on display and the raffle box.
Cassius: I see how it works now. Shall we draw the raffle until there are no tickets left then?
Kyuta: Kappa! But why?
Cassius: That will guarantee we win something. It is the most logical course of action to take.
Cassius: Besides, it would be quite the creative endeavor to analyze the probability of drawing a winning raffle ticket.
Cassius: I can accomplish that at this activity's end by comparing the numbers of winning and total tickets.
Zeta: What fun would that be! And do you have any idea how much that'd cost?
Just then, a lively melody comprised of string and percussion instruments begins to play.
Siegfried: The festival music's begun... I suppose they're performing a dance at the plaza on the opposite side.
Siegfried: According to the sightseeing brochure, it's a ceremonial dance devoted to the water god of Tono Island.
Zeta: Why don't we go check it out? Maybe we can even join in!
Cassius: Hold it. I haven't finished my raffle draws yet.
Beatrix: Ugh, seriously? Get with it already!
Zeta and Beatrix drag Cassius along, while the rest of the crew follows.
There is an elevated wooden stage in the center of the plaza where the musical performance is held.
People are circling around that platform with a well-practiced dance routine.
Cassius: Hm, what a piquant tune this is.
Cassius: One, two, cha-cha-cha... Like that?
Kyuta: Kappa! I wanna try too!
Kyuta: One, two, cha-cha... cha?
???: Hm? That voice just now sounded like...
Festival Staff: Yasu? Somethin' the matter?
Two men are talking in front of a booth by the corner of the plaza.
Their booth has a sign that reads "Riverfolk Festival Committee."
Yasu: It's nothing. Any problems on your side?
Festival Staff: A few children got lost, but we've already reunited them with their parents!
Yasu: I see... How are we managing the crowds?
Festival Staff: Things are going way smoother than last year! Having extra boats on call and the expanded main plaza are making all the difference.
Festival Staff: It's all thanks to the direction you gave us, Yasu! You know, you might be better suited to management rather than—
Yasu: ...
Festival Staff: Oh, no, sorry... I didn't mean it like that!
Festival Staff: Next week's fireworks show was your idea too, right? I hope it goes just as swimmingly!
Yasu: Right...
Yasu: (Things are fine on this end. The only problem is with...)
The crew is still dancing along, following the movements of everyone else, when the music comes to a stop.
Siegfried: Looks like they're rotating in other musicians.
Vyrn: We've been here for a while now. Why don't we get back to checking out all the stalls?
As the crew gets ready to leave the plaza, a Harvin woman descends from the stage.
???: ...
Niyon not in crew

Siegfried: Oh my. I believe I spot an Eternal: Niyon, distinguished musician renowned throughout all the skies.
Siegfried: You were breathtaking up there, absolutely breathtaking.
Niyon: Hello.
Vyrn: Siegfried, you know this lady?
Siegfried: She's a member of the Eternals, a legendary crew whose members are each masters of a weapon type. Niyon is their resident maestro.
Lyria: Wow! I had no idea we were dancing to music from someone so famous!

Niyon is a crew member

Vyrn: Hey, isn't that Harp Girl?
(Captain) goes over to say hello.
Niyon: (Captain)? We must be in tune to bump into each other here.
Lyria: Oh, look! Niyon's wearing a yukata too!
Niyon: Mm. It's a festival after all.
  1. Looks great on you.
  2. Where'd you buy it?

Choose: Looks great on you.
Niyon: ...
Niyon: ...
Lyria: Um... Are you okay, Niyon?
Niyon: (Captain) hit the right note.

Choose: Where'd you buy it?
Niyon: I needed something fitting to wear onstage. So I asked Sierokarte.
Niyon: Teehee... I wanted (Captain) to see me in this, so things worked out perfectly.
Continue 2
Vyrn: We heard you signed up for a job. Had no idea it would be playing music right at this festival though.
Lyria: Your song was so upbeat that I found myself dancing to it, Niyon!
Continue 1
Niyon: I get asked to join every year. Besides...
Niyon: ...
Vyrn: Hm? Besides what?
Niyon: Sushi...
Cassius: Sushi... the local delicacy here which uses raw fish, or so I've been told.
Lyria: Um, do you like sushi, Niyon?
Niyon: Yes, it's delicious. I enjoy eating outdoors, so I make sure to have it boxed.
Vyrn: Boxed?
Niyon: If you order as takeout, they put it in a nice wooden box.
Lyria: That must be so nice! I'd love to try out your favorite sushi, Niyon!
Niyon: I like Miyasato best. They're a traditional sushi house with the longest history on the island.
Niyon points to a restaurant near the shrine behind the plaza, where a long line has already formed.
Vyrn: Wow! Looks like business is booming!
Kyuta: Miyasato...
Lyria: Thanks, Niyon! Let's go and see, (Captain)!
Cassius: The preparation of raw fish, and a taste so remarkable that people will stand in line for it... Both intrigue me greatly.
(Captain) and company thank Niyon for the recommendation, then make their way through the crowds to line up for sushi.
Niyon: ...
Niyon: (The melody of the boy with the bear mask sounded awfully similar to another one I heard recently...)
Niyon: (Though it was nothing malicious...)
Niyon is not entirely unconcerned, but she brushes it off as she has her next job coming up.
Cassius: This appears to be the end of the line.
Zeta: You've really gotten used to this...
Kyuta: ...
Siegfried: Everything okay, Kyuta? You don't like raw fish?
Kyuta: Ah, no, that's not it! I'm fine, really!
???: Excuse me, is this the back of the line?
Lyria: Mm-hm. We just got here too.
Friday (Summer) not in crew

Lyria: Eep!
Vyrn: Not you again... Miss Batter-for-Brains!
She brushes her bright golden hair aside.
Her name is Friday... A woman who has dedicated heart and soul to the promotion of Premium Friday.
Friday: Hm? It's you...
Vyrn: Watch out, (Captain)! Who knows what kinda batter she's got up her sleeve!
Friday: I'm glad you remember me, but I'm just here for a taste of sushi—the heavenly delight that has even the most epicurean gastronomes squealing in delight.
Friday: I'm not here to destroy the past which binds you to your antiquated work ethic. Maybe next time!
Vyrn: We don't need you destroying anything! Geez, you're really one to watch out for...
Friday: Nevertheless, I must say it's a bizarre coincidence to bump into you here—in the midst of my summer vacation.
Friday: I make sure to recover and refresh during my days off so that I can return to work fully charged! As it is absolutely my right to do so!
Friday: A good work-life balance must be maintained at all costs! That means regularly leaving behind the stresses of the workplace and plunging wholeheartedly into your leisure time!
Vyrn: The same goes for FRIED SHRIMP, I see. Phew!

Friday (Summer) is a crew member

Lyria: Wait, it's you! Friday!
Friday: My, my, what a coincidence for us to meet here!
Friday: You must also be here for a taste of sushi—the heavenly delight that has even the most epicurean gastronomes squealing in delight.
Lyria: Mm... So you're not here for work?
Friday: You're worried I might be working too hard? My, you're just too kind!
Friday: But there's nothing to worry about! Because I'm here to enjoy my summer vacation. And when I say "vacation," I mean it!
Friday: Any hardworking person deserves time to wind down and relax, free of any work-related stress. So I'm going to do just that!
Vyrn: Does that mean we won't be seeing the FRIED SHRIMP that destroys the past binding us to our whatchamacallit? Phew!

Friday: Ah, that reminds me! There's a book I highly recommend to every one of you workaholics!
Friday: It's called "Premium Friday for Dummies"! I can offer you a limited-time 30 percent discount; I'll even throw in my autograph!
Friday: It's the definitive guide on how to make your Fridays shine, especially the last Friday of every month—penned by yours truly! Your only recourse is to buy a copy for yourselves!
Vyrn: Nah, I'm good... Besides, I thought we were supposed to forget about work—period.
Friday: Perhaps you should attend my seminar then. I guarantee you that after just one session, you'll want to buy a few extra copies of my book for yourselves!
For the entire duration of their wait in line, (Captain) and company are subjected to Friday's incessant rhetoric about healthy work hours.

Kappa Summer Chronicle - Chapter 3: Riverfolk Boogie-Woogie - Episode 3

Just as the crew gets ready to leave Miyasato after a delicious meal, Friday grills the sushi chef about the shop's work conditions. Upon learning that he has not taken a single day off this summer, Friday goes ballistic. (Captain) and company manage to drag her out, but not before she leaves behind a few of her books on the counter.

The crew waits in a long line before finally getting into the prestigious sushi house, Miyasato.
Sushi Chef: Hello there! Welcome to Miyasato!
Kyuta: Kappappappa?
For some reason, Kyuta freezes up at the sight of the delighted chef.
Sushi Chef: ...!
Sushi Chef: How was your day, little cub?
Kyuta: Kappa! Um...
Sushi Chef: Great mask you've got there. The chair might be a bit tall for you. Think you can get on it okay?
Kyuta: Mm...
Siegfried: ...
The restaurant features both counter and table seats. The crew chooses the latter.
Eager to see what Miyasato has to offer, they look to the menu posted on the wall.
Sushi Chef: So, what can I make you?
Siegfried: (No clams, huh...)
Siegfried: I'll have a plate of demonbream.
Lyria: I'd like sea urkin battleship rolls!
Cassius: Bonito... And the prawn would be nice.
Friday: Ten plates of prawn for me!
Sushi Chef: Coming right up!
Vyrn: Wow, they've got eal too? I guess I'll have some of that... How about you, Kyuta?
Kyuta: (Hm? Is it because of the mask? But that couldn't be it...)
Lyria: Kyuta?
Sushi Chef: Can I recommend you some salmun, little cub?
Sushi Chef: With its bright orange color and its sweet taste, it's a really popular fish with the kids!
Kyuta: Okay... I like salmun.
Vyrn: Salmun? I've never tried it, but now I'm interested!
Beatrix: Gulp... Color me interested too!
Siegfried: What will you have, (Captain)?
  1. Demonbream!
  2. Bring on the urkin battleships!
  3. Salmun!
  4. Ten plates of prawn!

Choose: Demonbream!
Choose: Bring on the urkin battleships!
Choose: Salmun!
Choose: Ten plates of prawn!
Sushi Chef: Sure thing! I'm gonna bring 'em out in order!
The sushi chef lays neatly sliced sashimi onto a long plate.
Grabbing a handful of vinegared rice from a tub with his right hand, he applies a green seasoning to the sashimi in his left hand with an index finger.
Sushi Chef: Whew!
In another dexterous movement, he puts the sashimi and rice together to form a beautiful piece of sushi.
Friday: Wow, that took some serious skill! You're the real deal!
Sushi Chef: Haha, keep looking at me like that and I just might blush...
Kyuta: Kappappappa!
Underneath his bear mask, Kyuta watches with wonder at the chef's every movement.
Sushi Chef: There, all done!
Beatrix: Wow, I can't believe how cute they are! And there's so much color! Is that pink stuff in the corner also sushi?
Siegfried: It's a type of pickled ginger called "gari." They're great for cleansing your palate between pieces of sushi.
Siegfried: By the way, if you pick up a sushi cookbook, vinegared rice is called "shari," the food item that goes on it is called "neta," while that green condiment is known as "sabi."
Sushi Chef: Hahah, you really know your stuff! But now's the time to eat up! Go on, have your fill!
Vyrn: All righty then, I'm digging in!
(Captain) and company feast on the sushi laid out before them.
Vyrn: This is amaaazing!
Cassius: Nom, nom... The sourness of the vinegared rice subdues the pungence of the raw fish, melding together with the fat.
Cassius: The bonito is also processed very cleanly. The stench of blood is absent, allowing me to savor the umami in its entirety.
Cassius: Though it may not provide ample nutrition on its own, the unsaturated fatty acids from the fish will surely assist in revitalizing bodily functions.
Zeta: You know you could also just call it delicious, instead of hiding behind all that babble.
Beatrix: Mmm! This sweet salmun just melts in my mouth!
Friday: Chomp... Yum! Prawn is even more springy when it's raw!
Lyria: Wow! This "sabi" is really strong!
Vyrn: You okay? I think I see tears in your eyes.
Lyria: Yeah, just a bit surprised... But it's really good!
Siegfried: An incredible sensation spreads across my mouth the moment it touches my tongue... How is this possible when demonbream's not even in season this time of year?
Siegfried: I'd love for Lancelot and the others to experience this as well. This is a taste that's likely extremely difficult to replicate.
Sushi Chef: Hah hah hah! I'm glad to see you all like it!
Moved by the phenomenon that is sushi, (Captain) and company continue eating with smiles wider than their faces.
The chef lets out a pleased chuckle.
Kyuta: ...
With a vacant expression, Kyuta watches the giddy sushi chef.
  1. How's the food, Kyuta?

Choose: How's the food, Kyuta?
Kyuta: Kyuu! Oh, I was spacing out.
Kyuta: But I guess I should start eating!
Kyuta slides a piece of salmun sushi underneath his mask.
Kyuta: Nom, nom...
Kyuta: ...!
Kyuta: Ka-Kappaaaa!
Vyrn: Ahaha! Lovin' it already, huh!
Kyuta: ...!
Siegfried: I understand your fondness of it, but kicking about in excitement can be dangerous.
Kyuta: Chomp!
Zeta: Haha, he's so focused on his sushi that he can't hear you.
Kyuta: (Delicious food and smiling people... It makes me feel all warm inside!)
Kyuta: (So this is why the boss—)
(Captain) and company order additional sushi, satisfying their palates to the fullest.
Siegfried: I went ahead and paid the bill. Should we get going soon?
Friday: By the way, chef, I don't see any other staff around. Don't tell me you run this place by yourself...
Sushi Chef: Hm? Er, well, I do actually...
Friday: I suppose you procure all the ingredients alone too? Hm, I can't imagine such a professional job being done in rotating shifts...
Friday: Those black bags under your eyes tell me you haven't slept a day this summer.
Vyrn: C'mon now, Miss Batter-for-Brains...
Sushi Chef: A-and what of it?
Friday: ...!
Friday: Oh my Bahamut!
Friday immediately stands to attention, knocking her chair down in the process. It lands with a loud thud that echoes throughout the restaurant.
Friday: What you're doing is unacceptable! Where's the work-life balance in your routine, buster!
Friday: To make personal sacrifices for the sake of your work is no virtue, I tell you!
Sushi Chef: ...!
Cassius: I don't think I've ever heard anything more illogical. Is this not your first encounter with the chef? How can you make such bold claims?
Friday: Because I just know! Once you've done this job long enough, a gut instinct kicks in!
Friday: Even this island, covered with the vast expanse of beautiful sea on every side, has fallen prey to the darkness lurking in our society!
Friday: This is a problem larger than life, larger than Premium Friday! We must reexamine your working conditions from every possible angle!
Lyria: Um... Let's not forget there are other customers here too...
Sushi Chef: If you would please take your leave!
Paying no heed to the others who try to pacify her, Friday takes out one book after another from her bag.
Friday: Here's a copy of "Quality of Life Assessment," "Work-Life Balance Will Complete You," and "Premium Friday for Dummies."
Friday: To show my appreciation for such a wonderful meal, I'm willing to part with them for free—with my autograph included in each! Consider it a donation!
Vyrn: Geez, give it up already! We're getting outta here!
Friday's Voice: Make sure to read them at least ten times each! Doing so will be the antidote to the chaos in your life! I hope you see that!
(Captain) and company end up dragging her away to the entrance.
Sushi Chef: ...
On her way out, Friday makes sure to leave behind a stack of books on the counter of Miyasato.
The chef stares at the covers on those publications and thinks to himself pensively.

Kappa Summer Chronicle - Chapter 3: Riverfolk Boogie-Woogie - Episode 4

After parting with Friday, many of the stalls begin closing up for the day. The crew comes across a die-cutting stall that is still open. When Yasu—the man running the stall—notices Kyuta, he makes a sudden grab for the kappa. Sig, Ghandagoza, and Siegfried rush Kyuta back to the inn while (Captain) and the others confront Yasu.

The crew is now back at the plaza after dragging Friday away from the restaurant.
Friday: To think that the unspeakable horrors of society would manifest even in such a delightful sushi restaurant...
Friday: But with my self-help books now in his possession, he should be able to recover soon enough.
Vyrn: I'm not sure I wanna know where your confidence comes from...
Friday: Humph... I must return to enjoying my vacation! Till we meet again!
Friday stomps off with very loud, affected footsteps.
The crew looks around to see that the festival is winding down now that peak hours have passed.
Cassius: Some stalls are already packing up to leave. I was hoping to see every one of them...
Zeta: No way! Is that even possible?
Cassius: Oh, it was most definitely possible, physically. If only I had taken greater care with my distribution of time.
Beatrix: Hey, cheer up. There's gonna be a major fireworks show in a few days. I spotted a sign for it just now.
Beatrix: Besides, it'll be another chance to wear our fancy new yukatas. There's sure to be plenty of food stalls there too.
Vyrn: Wait, where did Siegfried go?
Lyria: Hm? Didn't he leave the sushi restaurant with us?
Siegfried: My apologies. I didn't mean to worry you.
Siegfried: I was speaking to the chef about sushi production.
Siegfried whispers into Kyuta's ear.
Siegfried: Don't worry. Just enjoy the festival for now.
Kyuta: Kapppappa?
Kyuta: I-I'm so sorry! I didn't mean to hide anything...
Siegfried: It's fine. We can talk about it later.
Ghandagoza: Nwahaaa! Skunked, we were!
Kyuta: Kappappappa!
Sig: C'mon, Gramps! You got Kyuta so scared that he's hiding in the garbage can!
Sig and Ghandagoza show up at the festival after a brief fishing run.
Sig: Hey, Kyuta. Everything's okay now. Why don't you come on out?
Kyuta: Kyuu... That surprised me...
Ghandagoza: My sincerest apologies! I meant to chirp as a nesting bird...
Lyria: Um, do skunks really live around here?
Sig: No, no, he doesn't mean the animal. It's fisher lingo for not catching what you were after.
Ghandagoza: Although we did catch the tails of some surprisingly fierce monsters...
Ghandagoza: Know that our hunt is far from over, lassie!
Sig: You can say that again! As the proud leader of the Druga Pirates, there's no way I'm backing out of this challenge!
Vyrn: Well, I'm just glad you two are having fun.
With Sig and Ghandagoza back, the crew heads down a street where the festival lights are still visible.
Beatrix: Ugh. Not this game...
(Captain) and company stop by a stall where men and women of all ages are intensely focused on die-cutting candy boards.
Even as the crowds grow sparse in the surrounding area, the lanterns for this particular stall continue to shine bright.
Zeta: Not your cup of tea, Bea? I guess you never were very good with this sort of delicate handiwork.
Beatrix: Not cool, Zeta! Don't be making assumptions about me! What are you gonna do if I'm a real pro at this stuff!
Zeta: Nothing?
Beatrix: Ugh, the nerve! Now you've got me riled up! I'll show you how it's done in a single shot! Just you watch!
Beatrix: Gimme the hardest one you've got, mister!
Yasu: Here's a dragon board for you.
Beatrix: Wha! A dragon?
Zeta: Ahaha, look at all the jaggy details! Pssh, good luck pulling this one off!
Beatrix: I-I don't need luck! With me and Embrasque, it's definitely doable!
Cassius: I'll have a star-shaped one.
Yasu: Sure thing.
Yasu: And how about a bear-shaped one for your little friend?
Yasu: ...!
The stallkeeper's expression changes at the sight of Kyuta.
Yasu: Wait, are you...
Yasu's eyes flash with anger as he grabs Kyuta by the arms.
Kyuta: Kyuu!
Yasu: Oh, you're definitely Kyuta!
Sensing danger, (Captain) quickly brushes Yasu's hand away and stands in front of Kyuta.
Yasu: The hell is your problem?
Siegfried: Took the words right out of our mouths.
Yasu: Tch... You don't even know Kyuta! Just hand him over!
Siegfried: Come, Kyuta. We're going back to the inn!
Sig: Gramps, let's go ahead and clear a path for them!
Ghandagoza: My body is rriiipe for action!
Siegfried picks up Kyuta and begins to run.
Sig and Ghandagoza lead the way back to their lodgings.
Yasu: Damn it! Looks like I'll have to show some force!
Bubbling with anger, Yasu takes out a giant blunt needle.
Vyrn: He's not kidding around! Watch out, (Captain)!

Kappa Summer Chronicle - Chapter 4: Black Night - Episode 1

As the crew make their way back to the inn, they bump into Friday, who is on her way to the shrine for the Cucumber Offering. Suspecting that they could learn a thing or two about kappa from a shrine visit, (Captain), Vyrn, Lyria, and Cassius make a side trip there. Shortly after arrival, they hear mysterious voices from the brush behind the shrine altar.

Yasu, the man running the die-cutting stall, made a sudden grab for Kyuta.
Siegfried, Sig, and Ghandagoza shook off the stallkeeper and made their way back to the inn with Kyuta.
After a brief scuffle with Yasu, (Captain) and company saw a chance to break away and took it. They are now back at the plaza, blending in with the crowds.
Zeta: Cripes, what the hell is up with that needle-wielding creep?
Beatrix: Kyuta must be caught up with some really bad people. How 'bout we find that punk again and make him talk?
Cassius: That would be a most illogical course of action. The resulting commotion would draw attention to ourselves and limit our actions.
Beatrix: I guess you're right... But at this rate we'll never know what his deal is.
Cassius: Calm yourselves and consider that since we know he's affiliated with the festival, ascertaining his identity later should be relatively simple.
Beatrix: Hm, now why didn't I think of that...
Lyria: Anyway, why don't we go back to the inn? I'm worried about Kyuta.
Beatrix: Yeah, let's do that... Kyuta was really scared.
Nodding in agreement, (Captain) gets ready to lead the crew off the festival grounds when a familiar face shows up.
Friday: Why, we meet again so soon.
Friday walks by, carrying a massive bundle of cucumbers tied together with rope.
Friday: I'm going to the shrine to make an offering so that the riverfolk can make my wish come true!
Vyrn: Hm? An offering for the shrine?
Friday: Gasp!
Will you and your crew be doing the same?
Friday: What a shame... I already bought every cucumber on the island to prove my devotion to the riverfolk.
Friday: Oh, but how about this!
With a bold smile, Friday plucks out a few cucumbers from her bundle and thrusts them into (Captain)'s hands.
Lyria: Huh, what's this for?
Friday: That'll be your offering. It should be just enough for the riverfolk to at least hear you out!
Friday: Well then, back to luxuriating! Maybe I'll see you at the shrine!
Having monopolized the conversation, Friday continues on her merry way while humming a tune.
Lyria: What was that about?
Cassius: She must have been referring to the Cucumber Offering... I heard mention of it earlier when researching this festival.
Cassius: By offering cucumbers, a favorite of the riverfolk, who serve as messengers of the water god, you can pray for a good harvest.
Vyrn: I'm just thinking out loud here, but is there any chance the ceremony's got something to do with Kyuta's home?
Vyrn: I mean, riverfolk is just another name for kappa, right? Not to mention Kyuta knew about cucumbers despite knowing so little else about the world.
Cassius: While your evidence is somewhat lacking, that is a fascinating theory. The people of this town don't believe in the existence of actual riverfolk. However...
Cassius: If your speculation does indeed prove true, it would mean that, regardless of their belief or lack thereof, people have been supplying riverfolk with cucumbers directly via the ceremonial rite.
Zeta: Why don't we go check it out for ourselves? It's not like we have any other leads on Kyuta's home anyway.
Beatrix: Wouldn't it be better to first make sure Kyuta got away safely?
Zeta: Nah, I'm sure he's fine. With a pirate captain, the Dragonslayer, and the founder of the Eternal Rage Style by his side, there's no way he's not fine.
Beatrix: I suppose you're right... I'm still worried though...
(Captain) gives it some thought and decides to stop by the shrine with Lyria and Vyrn before heading back to the inn.
The captain urges everyone else to go back ahead of them.
Cassius: Having us split up in order to accomplish two goals simultaneously is an admirable choice, (Captain). But I must accompany you.
Cassius: I am the one among us here who knows the most about kappa. There's a decent chance I may notice something.
Beatrix: Absolutely not! Don't forget you're under the Society's watch! There's no way me and Zeta are letting you out of our sights!
Cassius: You have nothing to worry about. You have my word that I will return before the night is through, once we've delivered the cucumbers. But you should go back to Kyuta for now.
Beatrix: Hm, I dunno...
Zeta: Before the night's through, huh?
Well, Cassius doesn't always give us the most crucial details, but he's never told us a lie either. If you're worried about Kyuta, we should go check up on him.
Beatrix: Okay then... I'll just have to pray that Sergeant Ilsa never finds out!
Zeta: Sorry, (Captain). Hope you don't mind watching Cassius for us in the meantime.
And so Zeta and Beatrix make their way back to see how Kyuta is faring.
The others proceed to the shrine dedicated to riverfolk.
The crew arrive at the shrine grounds only to find that the lights have already been put out. It is pitch dark and no one is around.
They proceed further and discover a cucumber-filled stand placed in front of an altar outdoors.
Vyrn: Hm? I think I see some fried prawn in the mix.
Standing out amidst the mountain of green are bits of deep-fried batter. Lyria finds a letter on the stand.
Lyria: "Dear Riverfolk,

Fried prawn go great with cucumber. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do.

—Friday"
Vyrn: I should've figured!
Lyria: There's something on the back too...
"P.S. May the glorious tradition of Premium Friday spread across the world."
Cassius: I heard that the current practice is to leave behind your wish in writing along with the cucumber offering. Though I do not find it to be rational...
Lyria: Why don't we wish for Kyuta to reunite with his father?
Vyrn: Great idea! Since they're all kappa, I bet the chances of it coming true are that much higher!
(Captain) and company place their share of cucumbers on the stand, then offer a silent prayer with eyes closed and hands clasped.
???: Hyegh!
Lyria: ...?
I think I just heard some voices...
Vyrn: I heard 'em too. In the middle of the night though?
The crew pokes around and suspects that the eerie voices may be coming from the bushes behind the altar.
Cassius: Perhaps we should look into it.
(Captain) agrees, and they carefully approach the brush in the back.

Kappa Summer Chronicle - Chapter 4: Black Night - Episode 2

The crew finds a secret passage leading to an underground sushi workspace where many kappa are making preparations. The sushi chef appears with the cucumbers that were placed at the altar earlier. Just then, Kyuta shows up in front of the crew and tells them that this place is his home.

The crew investigates the bushes behind the altar where the mysterious voices had seemed to emanate from.
But there appears to be no trace of anyone in the thick foliage.
Lyria: Were we just imagining it?
Cassius: I wouldn't say that.
Cassius bends down and begins to sort through the grass, examining every part of the ground.
A square of earth suddenly flips up, revealing a passage leading underground.
Vyrn: Holy moly...
Cassius: I noticed something odd about the way our footsteps sounded, and surmised that there may be an open space underneath here. It turns out I was right.
???: Hyegh!
The mysterious voices from below are now clearly audible.
Vyrn: Gulp... I'm afraid to see what's down there...
(Captain) thinks on it briefly and decides that they will return immediately after confirming the source of the voices.
Cassius: There's no light source below... Watch your step on the way down.
(Captain) nods before taking the lead.
???: ...
A shadow looms beside the altar, but there is no one left to notice.
With only enough space for them to pass one at a time, the crew proceed with caution.
Cassius: It would seem this passage has hardly been used. Or at least it hasn't been in a very long time.
Vyrn: What's that stench though? Smells like... the sea?
(Captain) and company arrive at a stone door covered in moss.
The captain takes a deep breath and puts a hand on it.
The decrepit old door budges just enough for the crew to get a peek inside.
Kyuta's Father: Hyegh! I'm done filleting the fish!
Kappa 1: Hyegh! We might run out of rice soon!
Kappa 2: Hyegh... Aaah! I'm not sure I'll be able to finish washing everything by morning...
Lyria: That's a lot of kappa!
While the crew tries to make sense of the situation, someone comes in from another door on the far side.
Sushi Chef: Hey, guys! I brought you cucumbers!
Vyrn: Wait... I know that face...
Lyria: Ah! It's the chef from Miyasato!
Sushi Chef: Why don't we all take a break and have some together?
Kappa 1: Kappappa! Cucumbers are the best!
Kappa 2: Kappappappappa! I love me some cute-cumbers!
The kappa excitedly gather around the basket filled with their favorite food.
Kyuta's Father: Kyuu? What's this weird stuff...
Cassius: Hm... It appears fried prawn has somehow made its way into the basket.
Vyrn: That's gotta mean those are the same cucumbers we saw at the altar earlier.
Kappa 1: Kyu, kyu, kyu, kyuu! With this much food, I'll be ready for another all-nighter!
Kappa 2: Kappappappappappa! I'm gonna be as cool as cucumber for the whole summer!
The kappa tear into their cucumbers with wild abandon, their shouts filled with forced positivity.
Vyrn: Wow, I can't believe what I'm seeing!
Cassius: ...
I fail to grasp the situation. We may have to ask the chef himself.
Just as Cassius is about to enter the room, an unexpected face appears.
Kyuta: (Captain), I'm so sorry for not telling you!
Lyria: Kyuta?
Kyuta: This is my home.
Kyuta lowers his gaze in sadness.
Kyuta's Father: ...
Was that Kyuta's voice just now?
Kappa 1: Maita, keep spacing out and the cucumbers will be gone before you know it!
Kappa 2: I heard the boss found Kyuta... We should probably save some for him!
Maita: Yeah... Let's do that.
Friday: Oh my Bahamut!
With her beloved FRIED SHRIMP planted on the shrine grounds, Friday quivers in anger.
Using its pocket fried prawn functionality, Friday spies on the activity underground.
Friday: Something seemed fishy about that chef, so I looked into Miyasato...
Friday: Who could've imagined kappa were working down there!
Friday: This is unforgivable! I won't allow it!
Friday pulls out her FRIED SHRIMP from the ground and storms into the night.

Kappa Summer Chronicle - Chapter 4: Black Night - Episode 3

The crew returns to ground level and learns more about kappa history from Kyuta. It is tradition that kappa prepare ingredients underneath Miyasato, while the chef presses it all together to form sushi. Because sushi is now so popular, the staff is always bogged down by an overwhelming amount of work. But seeing the chef overwork himself for the sake of customers' smiles, the kappa show their respect by continuing to toil away with him—even at the expense of their well-being.

(Captain) and company have now borne witness to the kappa working under the shrine.
Kyuta, who's made a sudden appearance, asks (Captain) for some time to explain.
They go back aboveground to find the other crew members present. As they all head back to the inn, Kyuta explains his circumstances.
Kyuta: When I heard you went to offer cucumbers, I had a bad feeling.
Kyuta: We kappa always look forward to the cucumbers we get this time of the year...
Sig: Kyuta insisted on coming after you guys, so we decided to tag along.
Sig: When he saw you'd already gone underground, he leaped right down those stairs.
Kyuta: I'm so sorry! I'm not supposed to tell anyone about it...
Kyuta: Actually, I realized it when we went to Miyasato. That where I'm from was under there...
Kyuta: It's a long story, but I'll tell you everything.
Kyuta begins to relate the secret history of the kappa.
Kappa were all known as riverfolk in the past. As messengers of the island's indigenous water god, their existence was cherished by everyone.
They played an invaluable role for the religious townspeople...
Which was to help the shrine priest create a divine offering of food for the god.
This food item came to be known as sushi, the prized delicacy of Tono Island.
Kappa: Neta, shari, sabi, gari... Preparations for the ceremony are complete.
Shrine Priest: Thank you... I will now make sushi before the god.
Only kappa, in all their divinity, were allowed to prepare the sacred ingredients and plateware.
The shrine priest was to focus purely on heightening his sushi-pressing skills and passing them on to the following generation.
Eventually, however, even the peaceful Tono Island became embroiled in the flames of the War.
Shrine Priest: Riverfolk! Please hide in here!
Because Astrals targeted beings with special powers to turn into primal beasts, kappa also came to be in grave danger.
The shrine priest sheltered the kappa underground to keep them safe.
Spared from a great tragedy, the creatures were forever grateful to the priest.
Some time after that, kappa came back out of hiding and made all of Auguste their home.
They lived peacefully in the various regions of Auguste. For a time.
Kappa: Kyuu... They've turned this forest into a village too...
Over the span of many lifetimes, people gradually transformed the natural habitats of kappa.
Unable to keep up with the changes in the world, kappa went into rapid decline and sought a safe haven.
They returned to Tono Island where sushi had become a specialty dish, with the shrine priest serving as the sushi chef.
Past Chef: My goodness, you must be riverfolk! I've heard all about you, but I didn't think I'd live to see you one day!
Past Chef: I understand your plight! Please feel free to call this underground space here your new home!
Kappa: Thank you! We'll be sure to repay this debt someday!
By the wishes of both parties, they revived the old tradition of kappa and chef working together to produce the finest sushi in all the skies.
The kappa would prepare the ingredients, which the chef would then use to form sushi.
This is how kappa came to live under the sushi chef's care, and how Miyasato came be to known as the finest restaurant on the island.
Vyrn: That explains why Kyuta never got to see the outside world...
Vyrn: And why that underground workplace is connected to both the shrine and the restaurant.
Kyuta: Mm-hm. The chef—I mean, the boss is also the current shrine priest.
Lyria: Wait, something doesn't fit! The kappa didn't look very happy living down there...
Kyuta: It was only a few years ago that things started to get really busy.
Sushi Chef: La-di-da!
Kyuta: Pappa, the boss's growling!
Maita: Haha, no, you silly—he was humming. Ever since sushi became famous all over, the customers have been flooding in.
Sushi Chef: Kyuta, Maita, I can hear you guys. How's everything coming along?
Kyuta: There's been so much more to prepare... It's tough!
Sushi Chef: Haha, I hope this doesn't come across as too much of a shock, but things are bound to get busier!
Sushi Chef: We're gonna put a smile on every customer's face with our sushi!
Kyuta: With so many new people coming into the restaurant, even the chef was really happy at first.
Kyuta: But...
Kyuta: Sorry, Boss. I'm only half done chopping the fish...
Sushi Chef: Kyuta... You're still working at this hour?
Kyuta: Aren't you working too, Boss?
Yawn...
Sushi Chef: I only have time to research sushi ingredients after closing hours. It's a must to meet customer satisfaction...
Maita: Boss, I'm done with my part...
Maita: Are you okay? You look paler than a blueback herring...
Sushi Chef: Haha, I'll be fine... But you guys must be exhausted. Do me a favor and get yourselves some sleep.
Kyuta: Working through the night became more and more common. The boss and everyone else are completely drained...
Cassius: I can think of a few rational solutions. You could hire more people, and maybe decide on regular days off and holidays for starters.
Kyuta: The chef makes the sushi, and the kappa prepare the ingredients... That's the Miyasato way, how it's always been done.
Kyuta: Also, the boss says he can't bear to take days off and turn away customers hungry for sushi.
Lyria: I know what you mean, but if things keep going like this...
Kyuta: ...
(Captain) and company are now aware of the events that led to kappa working in the underground space beneath the sushi restaurant.
On their way back to the inn, each member of the crew ponders over the situation enshrouding Miyasato.

Kappa Summer Chronicle - Chapter 4: Black Night - Episode 4

Back at the inn, Siegfried reveals that after leaving Miyasato, he had a brief chat with the sushi chef and learned of his concern for Kyuta. The kappa youth remarks that eating sushi for the first time together with everyone and seeing the chef's smile showed him what it really means to do a good job for the customer. However, he also realizes that things are not as straightforward as simply working hard.

Back in their room at the inn, the crew discuss how they should resolve Kyuta's situation.
Beatrix: You know, there's something I wanted to ask...
Beatrix: When we went to Miyasato, you weren't exactly clamoring to reunite with your fellow kappa underground, Kyuta.
Beatrix: Does that mean you didn't want to go back since things were so bad?
Kyuta: Nuh-uh! I know things aren't easy, but I love the boss...
Kyuta: When he pretended not to know me, I wondered if he might be angry...
Siegfried: I can shed some light on that.
Siegfried: When I walked up to pay at the counter, the chef told me to meet him later by the back door of the restaurant.
Sushi Chef: That boy with the bear mask... He's Kyuta, isn't he?
Sushi Chef: Thank you so much for looking after him. About that though, I have a favor to ask...
Siegfried: He told me about your home beneath Miyasato.
Siegfried: It grieved him greatly to hear from your father, Maita, about how you'd stormed out of the cave.
Sushi Chef: He's still only a kid, and here I am not just working him but even keeping his dad from him...
Sushi Chef: At the very least, I want Kyuta to be free of worries and just enjoy himself at the festival. That's why I pretended not to know him earlier.
Sushi Chef: But of course, I wouldn't want to take advantage of your kindness...
Sushi Chef: Would you be able to keep him company just a little longer? Only until the festival's over! I promise to pay you in kind!
Siegfried: I appreciate your forthcomingness. But about the underground labor that's happening here...
Male Patron: 'Scuse me! I'm ready to order!
Sushi Chef: Ah, yes, I'll be right with you!
Sushi Chef: Please keep what I've told you a secret...
Siegfried: So I wanted to make sure I got to speak with you about this tonight.
Siegfried: What are your plans from here on out, Kyuta?
Kyuta: Kyuu...
Kyuta takes a deep breath, fumbling to find the right words to express his feelings.
Kyuta: I've been thinking about this a lot... If it's so busy at the shop, they should just take some days off.
Kyuta: I never understood why the boss was willing to go so far for the customers...
Kyuta: Not until today, when I had sushi for the first time.
Beatrix: You're kidding!
Lyria: Wait... You've been making sushi all this time, but you never had any yourself?
Kyuta: Well, the boss is the one who actually makes the sushi by pressing it together, and I guess it's just too valuable for us to eat...
Kyuta: Hehe, sitting at the counter and eating sushi with everyone was so much fun...
Vyrn: This is amaaazing!
Beatrix: Mmm! This sweet salmun just melts in my mouth!
Sushi Chef: Hah hah hah! I'm glad to see you all like it!
Kyuta: I didn't know the boss could smile like that until today!
Kyuta: If me and the other kappa stop working, that's a lot of people who won't be able to enjoy sushi...
Sig: Kyuta...
Kyuta: I just don't want the boss to be sad!
Kyuta: But then again, if something doesn't change, our bodies are going to wear out...
Kyuta: What should I do...
Seeing Kyuta struggle with his conflicted emotions, Sig gives him a reassuring pat on the back.
Sig: Kyuta. Let's just take it easy for now.
Sig: I'm sure you're exhausted from everything that's happened. We can continue this tomorrow.
(Captain) nods in agreement and urges everyone to get some sleep.
Kyuta: (This bed is so soft and fluffy... It makes me feel restless...)
Kyuta: (I haven't washed my head dish, but no one got mad at me for it...)
Kyuta: (Boss... Pappa...)
Kyuta: What can I do to help everyone...
Kyuta is conflicted over the toll that sushi-making is putting on the chef's and his fellow kappa's health.
Kyuta spends the night pondering, unable to get any semblance of sleep, as he lies on a real bed for the first time in his life.

Kappa Summer Chronicle - Chapter 5: Kappa Passion - Episode 1

(Captain) and company answer the door only to find Yasu, who had tried to make away with Kyuta the night before. He turns out to be the sushi chef's son and had been training to be one himself, but is now focused on managing the local festivities instead. He uses the same trick he pulled at the festival and grabs Kyuta—this time succeeding. He makes it all the way to Miyasato, where he finds his father collapsed on the ground.

Early next morning, a knock sounds on the room of the door that the crew is staying in.
Zeta: Who's there...
This early in the morning?
The insistent knocking shows no signs of stopping, waking everyone up. (Captain) goes to open the door.
Yasu: Yo.
Lyria: Oh my gosh! You're the stallkeeper from yesterday!
Yasu: I'm coming in.
Vyrn: What the... Hey, get outta here!
Yasu: I know Kyuta's here. Hand him over or else!
Beatrix: Screw you! What the heck makes you think you can just waltz in here you like you own the place!
Kyuta: Wait! I know Yasu... He's the boss's son!
Vyrn: This dirtbag is the chef's son? But then why was he manning a die-cutting stall instead of helping out at the sushi place?
Yasu: I've given up that life. Now I'm just the guy who runs festivals.
Yasu explains that he tends to shrine duties in lieu of his father, in addition to managing town events.
Yasu: We made it through the Riverfolk Festival okay, but a fireworks show is coming up.
Yasu: Chances are we'll be seeing a record number of customers at Miyasato.
Yasu: So come on back, Kyuta. We both know you don't really want to go out on your own.
Kyuta: You're right, but...
Kyuta is confronted with a dilemma. (Captain) and company find themselves unable to offer any words of solace.
The tension in the air eases for just a moment, and that's when Yasu makes his move.
Yasu: ...!
Kyuta: Kappa!
In one swift movement, Yasu grabs Kyuta and makes a run for it with Kyuta under his arm.
Vyrn: What the...
Vyrn: Wait up!
The crew chases after Yasu in a hurry.
Yasu shakes off his pursuers and makes it all the way to Miyasato.
Yasu: Huff... Huff... Dad, I've got Kyuta with me.
Yasu: Dad?
Usually the chef is already behind the counter before opening hours, making sure all his ingredients are in order.
Yasu: Something's not right...
The complete silence catches Yasu off guard. He takes a few steps further.
Kyuta: B–Boss!
Kyuta springs out of Yasu's arms.
He lands behind the counter, gaping at the sight before him.
Sushi Chef: Ngh...
Lying on the ground is the chef, writhing in pain.

Kappa Summer Chronicle - Chapter 5: Kappa Passion - Episode 2

The crew catches up and helps to nurse the sushi chef back to health. He explains that Friday dropped by last night to berate him for all the overtime he puts in, and he now sees some truth in her words. Just as he makes the difficult decision to close Miyasato's doors for the summer, Kyuta and (Captain) exclaim that they'll gladly stand in as junior chefs. When the others in the crew volunteer to help with preparations underground, the chef acquiesces.

On the second floor of Miyasato, (Captain) and company gather around by the chef's bedside.
Yasu: You okay, Dad? Have some eggnog. Heard it works wonders for fatigue.
Sushi Chef: Thanks... When did you buy eggs though? And for what?
Yasu: Psh, does it even matter?
Yasu: Anyway, (Captain)... I've gotta thank you for your help back there.
A bit earlier...
Kyuta and Yasu find the chef collapsed behind the counter.
Kyuta: Boss, Boss! Talk to me!
Sushi Chef: Ung...
Yasu: Calm it, Kyuta! You don't wanna shake him. We need a doctor here.
Vyrn: Finally caught up! What's your deal—
The crew enters Miyasato to find an emergency.
Siegfried leaps over the counter and checks the chef's condition.
Siegfried: He's still breathing... Bodily responses are normal. Pulse is quickened but not enough to cause concern. No external injuries.
Siegfried: The only symptom I see is physical exhaustion. Is there a room where we can put him at rest?
With the crew's assistance, the chef's condition takes a turn for the better.
Sushi Chef: When I was checking the ingredients, I just lost myself and fainted... Who knows what might've happened had you not shown up.
Sushi Chef: Maybe all the fatigue's caught up with me. Reminds me of what that blond lady was saying.
Yasu: Dad?
With a gentle smile, the chef takes out a book.
Vyrn: "Quality of Life Assessment"?
Vyrn: It's one of those books from Miss Batter-for-Brains!
Sushi Chef: She came by again after I closed up shop last night.
Friday: Sorry to visit at such a late hour. I thought you might like to know the negative effects of overworking yourself.
Sushi Chef: You again... I'm fine! Leave me alone!
Friday: How about the kappa underground?
Sushi Chef: ...!
How did you even—
Friday: Before considering the smiles of your customers, you have to consider your own smiles!
Sushi Chef: ...!
Friday: Put a hand to your heart and ask yourself. What exactly are you working for?
Sushi Chef: As if it weren't obvious enough already—to put a smile on my customers' faces! For that, I'll—
Friday: That won't do!
Sushi Chef: Huh?
Friday: To see your customers delighted is a rewarding endeavor. It makes you want to work that much harder.
Friday: But that alone doesn't make the daily grind worth it!
Friday: You push on because it's fun. You find motivation in pleasing your clientele.
Friday: You might be happy with that on an emotional level, but your body won't hold. Taking care of yourself is equally important!
Friday: Which is why I'm saying that you and the kappa working yourselves to the bone is a huge mistake!
Sushi Chef: I've started thinking lately... that a job's gotta be more than just fulfilling.
Sushi Chef: Up until now, I've toiled day and night to keep up the Miyasato tradition.
Sushi Chef: But look at me now. Just goes to show how right that lady was.
Sushi Chef: I'm so sorry, Kyuta... I'm such an idiot.
Kyuta: B-Boss?
Sushi Chef: I've been nothing but a burden on you, your father, and the other kappa...
Sushi Chef: I'm closing down the shop. At least for the summer.
Faced with his sickly voice, none can contest his decision.
Kyuta: ...
(Captain) feels a tight grip.
The grip is from Kyuta's small, green, webbed hand.
Kyuta: A-are you sure you'd be okay with that, Boss?
Sushi Chef: Kyuta?
Kyuta: There's something I learned for myself after eating sushi with everyone.
Kyuta: It's that you work so hard because you want to put smiles on people's faces!
Kyuta: The people coming to the fireworks show will be looking forward to sushi too...
Kyuta: Is it really okay to give up now?
Sushi Chef: ...!
Yasu: You heard him yourself! My old man's not closing up shop 'cause he wants to!
Yasu: No one feels the weight of Miyasato more than him! Why do you think he's been able to keep things up for so long!
Kyuta: ...!
Kyuta squeezes (Captain)'s hand again.
  1. Go on, Kyuta. Speak your mind.

Choose: Go on, Kyuta. Speak your mind.
Kyuta: Kappa!
(Captain) whispers in Kyuta's ear.
Kyuta: ...
Kyuta: I'll... make the sushi.
Kyuta: I'll press the sushi in your place, Boss!
Sushi Chef: Wha!
Yasu: Tch!
Yasu: Sushi-pressing's a skill that's passed down only to the chef of each generation. I thought you knew that, Kyuta!
Sushi Chef: That's right! In the long history of Miyasato, kappa have never made sushi themselves...
Kyuta: Have you been making sushi all this time to chase history, Boss?
Kyuta: Aren't the smiles of people who walk into Miyasato what really counts?
Sushi Chef: W-well...
Yasu: That ain't the only problem! Making sushi right requires a tremendous amount of skill.
Yasu: I'm almost embarrassed to say this, but I could never make 'em like my old man does!
Yasu: What makes you think you've got what it takes to do the job right?
Kyuta: I...
  1. We can do it together!

Choose: We can do it together!
(Captain) exclaims proudly that things will pan out if they tackle it as a joint effort.
Kyuta: (Captain)!
Siegfried: We can assist with the underground labor. That should lighten the load on the kappa.
Yasu: You think you can handle it?
Cassius: The process by which fish become compact enough to be used on a piece of sushi piques my curiosity greatly. To be able to experience it firsthand would be a boon.
Beatrix: Hahah, so we'll be prepping fish, huh. I guess there's more than one way to enjoy a vacation!
Zeta: Heh, you can handle the washing, Bea. If we let you process the fish, everyone's gonna be wondering why Miyasato's serving candy sushi.
Beatrix: Grr... Fine, have it your way. I've done so much cleanup from confectionery-making that I've got what it takes to clean any bonito!
Kyuta: Guys...
Yasu: Damn you all for trying to mess with Miyasato tradition!
Kyuta: Tradition is important, but there are things even more important!
Kyuta: I just want the customers, the boss, Pappa, and you, Yasu...
Kyuta: To smile big and wide!
(Captain) and company turn to the chef and his son to gauge their reaction.
Sushi Chef: Smiles for everyone, huh...
Sushi Chef: Doesn't sound very realistic, but I guess things have to start somewhere.
Sushi Chef: A true sushi chef's path is paved with hardships. I assume you're up to the challenge?
Kyuta: Boss... You mean...
  1. Thank you!

Choose: Thank you!
The crew receives permission to help out at Miyasato.
With a daunting challenge ahead of them, they bubble over with excitement.
Yasu: Damn you all... I've seen enough!
Yasu storms out of the room in a fit of anger.

Kappa Summer Chronicle - Chapter 5: Kappa Passion - Episode 3

Miyasato takes a temporary hiatus, giving (Captain) and company time to prepare for the day of the fireworks show. Cassius, Zeta, and Beatrix receive instruction from the kappa underground, while (Captain) and Kyuta study the art of pressing sushi above ground. Yasu drops by for a bite and leaves harsh criticism. However, this criticism is exactly what helps the two junior chefs realize what they're lacking.

(Captain) and company have taken on the task of helping out at Miyasato to take some burden off of the bedridden sushi chef.
Kaz, who shows up later, also agrees to help.
Miyasato is set to have a record number of visitors on the day of the fireworks show. The shop is closed until then, allowing for smoother preparation of the main event.
Cassius and Kaz are learning the ropes at the underground workspace.
Maita: Once you cut off the head and fillet the body into three sections, you can then cut them into even smaller blocks.
Cassius: Cut them into blocks...
Cassius: Right... And then those blocks are sliced further to use in each individual piece of sushi.
Maita: Yeah. Just keep in mind how it will look put together with the vinegared rice.
Maita: (Who'd have thought I'd be teaching people how to process fish one day...)
Maita: (We've only ever followed orders from the boss up until now...)
Maita: (But what Kyuta said back there...)
Maita: Kyuta! What do you think you're doing!
Maita: Just when I thought you'd finally come home, what's this I hear about working with outsiders to make sushi?
Maita: I can't believe even the boss told me to teach them how things work down here!
Kyuta: Mm... I want to give it a shot!
Maita: Putting the sushi together is the chef's job, while we handle the ingredients! Why are you messing with tradition!
Maita: How many times do I have to say that we do this for the boss—
Kyuta: If I can't put a smile on your face, Pappa, none of this means anything!
Maita: Huh?
Kyuta: No matter how tough things get, we push through for the boss... But it doesn't have to be that way.
Kyuta: I'll prove that there's more than one way to be a sushi chef!
Kyuta: And I'll use my sushi to put a smile on people's faces!
Maita: (Kyuta used to curl up when the smallest little thing frightened him... What exactly did he experience outside?)
Kaz: Maita, how's this for the sashimi?
Maita: That's fine if you're going to eat it as is. But if it's going to be used for sushi...
Maita: Cough!
Kaz: Maita! If you're worn out, why not get some rest?
Maita: I-I'll be fine. Now, about your cutting technique...
Elsewhere in the underground cave, Zeta and Beatrix are also receiving instruction from kappa.
Kappa 1: Nuh-uh, you've gotta do it over. Plain ol' vinegar and rice won't work as the shari for sushi.
Zeta: Wha? You mean there's actually a difference?
Kappa 1: You can't just throw some vinegar on rice and expect it to magically become shari!
Zeta: Grr... Fine then!
Beatrix: Hahah, get a load of this! I scrubbed every sushi board on hand squeaky clean!
Beatrix: Impressed yet? It's the first time I've ever used freezing cold water to wash anything!
Beatrix: My hands are already numb from it... The sense of accomplishment is really something though—
Kappa 2: Oh, that was only a quarter of the entire batch. Since we're splitting this job up half-and-half, here's your remaining boards. After that are the plates and souvenir containers.
Beatrix: You're telling me there's more? That much more? Are you serious...
Kappa 2: Um, I can handle the rest if it's too much...
Beatrix: No, no, I can do this! I can definitely do this!
Beatrix: Ryaaaah!
Behind the counter upstairs, Kyuta and (Captain) are practicing the art of sushi-pressing.
Kyuta: I think they're finally starting to look right...
  1. We've got a ways to go...

Choose: We've got a ways to go...
Kyuta grabs a handful of vinegared rice and puts it on a scale pan.
If it lines up with the other pan which has a rock placed on it, that means the proper amount of rice is being used.
Kyuta: I didn't use enough... If only I could grab just the right amount every time like the boss does...
While obsessing over the details, the two use the sushi chef's samples as a baseline for their own creations.
Kyuta: Phew... Finally done with one standard-grade sushi set!
Lyria: That's impressive! It looks just like the chef's sushi!
Satisfied with their work so far, the two breathe a sigh of relief.
Yasu: A standard set, eh?
Lyria: Yasu!
Yasu: Kyuta, (Captain). Consider this part of your training. Can you make me a set of sushi?
Kyuta: Okay!
Kyuta and (Captain) press their next few pieces of sushi in front of Yasu.
After giving the finished sushi on the wooden board a good lookover, Yasu puts one into his mouth.
Yasu: ...
Yasu: Hearing you talk big made me wonder, but this crap is disgusting.
Yasu: You guys have no business making sushi here!
Kyuta: Kyuu!
Yasu: You've got another thing coming if you think our customers come here to eat rice and fish smacked together!
Yasu washes his hands, grabs a pinch of rice from the bucket, and places it on a scale pan.
The scale is perfectly level.
Yasu: Hah!
He presses it into a standard-grade sushi in an instant, then goes on to make a whole set.
Kyuta: K-kappa? That was so fast... and you got the amount of rice just right!
Yasu: My sushi's only good for show. It's nothing compared to what my old man can do.
Yasu: The fact that you're impressed by my slipshod skills shows that you'd be nothing more than an embarrassment in front of the customers. So give it up already.
Kyuta: But you're so good at it... Why did you give up?
Yasu: ...
Yasu: There's only room for my dad's sushi at Miyasato.
Yasu: I made that for you, Kyuta. If you've got enough room in your stomach, give it a try.
With little else to say, Yasu takes his leave.
Lyria: Yasu really seemed to know what he was doing.
Vyrn: Looks all the same to me no matter who makes it...
Siegfried: Hey, you two.
Kyuta: Ah, Siegfried.
Siegfried: You made that little platform so you could stand tall behind the counter, right? I came to see if I could make a few adjustments to it, but...
Siegfried: You guys don't look well. Did something happen?
They explain the little incident with Yasu.
Siegfried: I see... He's taken up this sort of training seriously before. I'm sure Yasu has his reasons.
Siegfried: Did you try his sushi yet, Kyuta?
Kyuta: Oh, right. I'll eat one now!
Kyuta places Yasu's sushi in his mouth.
Kyuta: Kappappappappa! That was amazing!
Kyuta: But it doesn't look any different from what (Captain) and I made...
Siegfried: ...
Siegfried: Just rice and fish together, huh...
Siegfried chooses his next words very carefully.
Siegfried: I'm no cook myself, but there's one very important lesson I learned from helping out at Bistro Feendrache.
Siegfried: Which is that every dish should be made with the express purpose of satisfying your customer.
Kyuta: ...!
Siegfried: Male, female, young, old, regulars, newcomers, individuals or groups... No two customers are alike.
Siegfried: You're not just blindly pressing sushi together. Focus on the customer before you and picture the joy on their faces.
Siegfried: Maybe, just maybe, that's what Yasu was trying to get across.
Kyuta: I-it's true that I was only thinking of how to get closer to the boss's sushi...
(Captain) begrudgingly admits to doing the same.
When Kyuta lowers his gaze, Yasu's remaining sushi come into view.
Kyuta: Kappa!
Lyria: Huh? Did something just happen?
Kyuta: Mm-hm! What's important is the customer before you...
Kyuta: We can't go on like this!
With a jolt of inspiration, Kyuta runs down the steps at full speed.

Kappa Summer Chronicle - Chapter 5: Kappa Passion - Episode 4

(Captain) and Kyuta invite all their friends below to come up and try out their sushi. The kappa now realize how much of a difference they make in putting a smile on customers' faces, bringing motivation to an all-time high.

Kyuta and (Captain) are standing behind the counter again on the next day.
Lyria, Vyrn, Cassius, Siegfried, Zeta, Beatrix, Sig, Ghandagoza, and Kaz come in as guests.
Kyuta: Welcome to Miyasato! Hope you enjoy it here today!
Sig: Howdy, Chefs! Can't wait to try out your sushi!
  1. We've got this!
  2. You can count on it!

Choose: You can count on it!
Sig: Hahah! That's the spirit! Nice to see you've got your game face on!
Choose: We've got this!
The other kappa have also been called upstairs by Kyuta.
Kappa 2: Kappa! The shop feels so much smaller when the seats are filled.
Maita: So why are we here again? We need to get back to work as soon this is over...
Kyuta: Me and (Captain) are going to make sushi to show our appreciation for everyone!
Kyuta: I want Pappa and the other kappa to see how happy our customers get when eating sushi.
Kappa 1: A chance for you two to show off your sushi-pressing skills?
Kyuta: No... What I really want to show is the skill that goes into preparing the ingredients!
Maita: Kappa?
The two young sushi chefs open the lid of the rice bucket, bring out the dishes, and begin pressing sushi.
Kyuta: Hyegh!
Kaz: Ooh! That's some impressive handiwork!
Before long, the guests are presented with plates of sushi made by Kyuta and (Captain).
Kyuta: Enjoy!
Siegfried: Quite a fancy arrangement. It's remarkable how far you've come...
Lyria: Wooow, it looks delicious!
The guests are eager to tuck into their meal.
Ghandagoza: Ngwaaah!
Ghandagoza: Most splendid! I need some sake to go along with such a refined taste!
Sig: Mm-hm, this is really something! I'd love to call over a few folks from Yudhisthira Island for a bite!
Vyrn: Oh, that's right... You two haven't had sushi before!
Kyuta: Ehehe. We don't have any sake on hand, but I'm glad you like the food!
Sig: Haha... So, Kyuta, you having fun in your path to full-fledged sushi chef?
Kyuta: Too much fun! But I mess up a lot too...
Sig: Hahaha! Glad to see you're enjoying life!
With a pleased chuckle, Sig rises from her seat.
Sig: You deserve a reward for making us food this good.
Sig: C'mon, Gramps! It's time to buckle down and catch ourselves the greatest fish there ever was!
Ghandagoza: Gahahaha! Well said! The finest sushi deserves the finest fish! We'll be back soon enough, Kyuta!
Kyuta: Ahaha... And off they go...
Kyuta: But thanks to the kappa's hard work, we got to make Sig and Ghandagoza happy too!
Maita: Kappa? They're just happy with the work you and (Captain) put into forming the sushi.
The kappa seem puzzled by Kyuta's glee.
Kyuta: There's more to sushi than just pressing it together!
Cassius: Nom, nom... Agreed. It's something I felt myself in helping with the preparation.
Cassius: Maita, you vary your cutting technique depending on the fish, twisting and turning the knife with such careful dexterity... You are truly extraordinary.
Maita: Paa!
Zeta: The rice is so tender it melts in my mouth... And that's all thanks to you, Hasuo.
Hasuo: Kappa! You remembered my name?
Zeta: Really now... I could never forget the name of someone who taught me their trade.
Zeta: Adjusting the amount of water and rice to use depending on the current conditions is something I'll probably never be able to master.
Beatrix: It was pretty neat washing the wooden sushi boards with Yoshiko.
Beatrix: The water was colder than the lakes of North Vast. Not to mention there were also mountains upon mountains of dishes to scrub. It wasn't easy getting rid of all the grime.
Beatrix: You might think I'm used to dishwashing with all the confectionery I make, but it wasn't easy learning a whole new way to go about it.
Yoshiko: Kyuu! I do my best to make sure the raw fishy smell doesn't stick!
Kyuta: You see? Gari, sabi, nori... These are all things we made together as a team!
Kyuta: The smiles that people walk away with come from all of our hard work!
Maita: We did this?
The kappa stare dumbfounded at everyone's faces lighting up with each bite of sushi they take.
Beatrix: I can't believe how good this is! Kyuta, (Captain), you two deserve a pat on the back yourselves!
Beatrix: I bet even Cassius has got some sparkling commentary for you—
Cassius: Chomp...
Beatrix: Geez, are you even listening? You could at least say something, you know...
Maita: (I always thought sushi ultimately belonged to the boss...)
Lyria: Nom, nom... Sho gud!
Lyria: But how come you didn't use any sabi today?
Zeta: Huh? There's definitely sabi in mine.
Kyuta: It seemed to be a bit much for you last time, so I decided to leave sabi out of your plate today!
Lyria: Wow, really? It's true I'm still not used to the strong taste...
Sushi Chef: Having the foresight to cater to each customer's tastes is most remarkable!
  1. Chef!

Choose: Chef!
Kyuta: Boss... Are you feeling better?
Sushi Chef: I can't be lying down when it's my disciples' chance to shine.
Sushi Chef: Anyway, Kyuta, (Captain)... It looks like you two have learned something really important.
Kyuta: Mm-hm! The sushi set from Yasu really changed the way I see things!
Kyuta: He knows that I really like salmun sushi, so he included an extra one in my set.
Kyuta: And he didn't use too much rice, so that I could grab them more easily with my small hands.
Kyuta turns to the kappa and presents them with sushi sets placed on wooden boards.
Kyuta: I made some for all of you too!
Kyuta: I tried to keep your likes in mind...
Maita: Kappa! What are you saying! Sushi is too valuable a commodity for us to indulge in...
Sushi Chef: I'm going to allow it as part of Kyuta's training. So please, eat up.
Yoshiko: Well, if the boss says so...
They timidly reach out to the sushi and put them in their mouths.
Yoshiko: Kappappappa! It's so different from cucumbers... I can't tell which one I like better!
Hasuo: Kappappappa! W-was I born to taste something so heavenly?
Hasuo: You try one too, Maita!
Maita: Fine... But you guys have to be exaggerating...
Maita: Kappaaaaa! I... I can't believe it!
Kyuta: Haha... No need to scream, Pappa!
Seeing everyone double over with mirth, Kyuta and (Captain) break into smiles.
Maita: Hm? I don't remember cutting this fish... Did you cut this one, Cassius?
Cassius: I've definitely gotten a lot better. All thanks to your insightful instruction.
Maita: More delicate attention to detail may be needed, but I think you have what it takes.
As they continue the merry meal, a lone man shows up at the counter.
Yasu: Humph, looks like you finally caught my drift.
Kyuta: Yasu!
Yasu: I'll have a standard-grade set.
Kyuta: Coming right up!
Yasu takes the set that Kyuta and (Captain) make for him and puts a piece in his mouth, chewing slowly.
Yasu: Hm...
Yasu: Much better than that sham you were calling sushi before. But you're still no match for what my old man can do.
Kyuta: I know... But I'm still going to do my best!
Yasu: ...!
Yasu: Tch, do what you will.
Sushi Chef: I'm sorry you have to put up with my foolish son... You know, he's supposed to be busy getting ready for the fireworks show.
Sushi Chef: The fact that he'd drop by here shows how concerned he is, even if he might not express it too well.
Lyria: Chef, don't you want Yasu helping out here at Miyasato?
Sushi Chef: Our shrine provides the space for both the Riverfolk Festival and the fireworks show. And we oversee both events.
Sushi Chef: I keep telling him it's okay to leave management of the events to someone else, but...
Sushi Chef: It's up to him in the end.
As if staring at something far in the distance, the chef's eyes are fixed on the door that Yasu just walked out of.
Maita: Kyuta... The sushi was delicious.
Kyuta: Pappa! Hehe, glad to hear it!
Maita: I think I finally see what it is that the boss treasures so much.
Maita: Thank you, Kyuta.
Maita bashfully cracks a smile.
Kyuta: I-is that a smile I see, Pappa? Hasuo, did you see that!
Hasuo: I didn't have to... Maita was actually smirking the entire time when everyone was eating sushi.
Maita: Kappappa? I was?
Hasuo: I haven't smiled in such a long time myself.
Hasuo: I've spent day after day after day tending to the rice... I'm so happy to see how much it mattered! Sniff...
Yoshiko: Aww, there's no need to cry, Hasuo... Oh, hey—we can do without the snot too!
Zeta: Ahaha... Hasuo...
Kyuta, look what you did to my rice-making master.
Hasuo: Zeta! Y-you called me your master?
Hasuo: Sniff... Wah...
Cassius: Kyuta. May we have seconds? You can put it on the tab.
The livelihood at Miyasato continues on as the crew enjoys another round of sushi.
And kappa now see very clearly how all the hard work they put in leads to smiles all around.
Feeling more inspired and motivated than ever, a buoyant optimism takes over them.
Before they know it, the short period of training draws to a close.
The day of the fireworks show finally arrives.
Lyria: Wow, that's a lot of customers! They're lined up all the way to the plaza!
Kyuta: We prepared as hard as we could... (Captain), it's time to open shop.
Kyuta: Kyuu... Are you ready?
  1. Everything'll be just fine!
  2. Can't say I'm confident...

Choose: Can't say I'm confident...
Kyuta: What? Really!
Vyrn: I'm sure that's just (Captain)'s way of calming your nerves, Kyuta.
Lyria: No bullying, (Captain)!
Kyuta: Oh... I get it!
Choose: Everything'll be just fine!
Kyuta: Ehehe, thanks!
Kyuta: I definitely couldn't have come this far on my own.
Kyuta: I'm able to do this because you stood with me behind the counter all this time, (Captain).
Kyuta: So I'm going to give it my all today!
  1. Gimme five!

Choose: Gimme five!
Their spirits reinvigorated, Kyuta and (Captain) prepare for a productive day.
Friday: I thought he was going to close the shop!
Friday stands aghast in front of the sushi house.
Friday: If he plans on keeping this up after reading my books, he must surely have some plan in mind...
Friday: I've got butterflies in addition to the fried prawn in my stomach... I'll have to keep a close eye on the situation.
Friday watches with concern over the long line forming in front of Miyasato.

Kappa Summer Chronicle - Chapter 6: Miyasato Crisis - Episode 1

The day of the fireworks show begins on a high note for Miyasato, as (Captain) and Kyuta cheerfully greet every customer who walks in.

Kyuta & (Captain): ...
The opening hour for Miyasato has arrived. Kyuta and (Captain) are standing behind the counter, fearless determination written all over their faces.
Lyria: Okay, I'm going to open up! Hope you two are ready!
The excitement evident in the expressions of everyone in line is a welcome sight.
Kyuta: Welcome to Miyasato!
  1. Welcome to Miyasato!

Choose: Welcome to Miyasato!
And so begins a long, eventful day of fun and sushi.

Kappa Summer Chronicle - Chapter 6: Miyasato Crisis - Episode 2

More and more customers come flooding in as the day goes on, and soon all the staff are on the brink of turmoil. Friday, who has been observing the situation from nearby, does not take kindly to it and vows to take action.

Male Patron: Mmmmm!
Male Patron: This mellow rice and fish go so well together... Who'da thought sushi could be so good!
  1. Appreciate the compliment!

Choose: Appreciate the compliment!
Regular Patron: More or less rice, with or without sabi... Looks like you're even up to handling customized orders.
Regular Patron: To be honest, I was afraid something might go wrong without the usual chef here. But your sushi's not too shabby either!
Sushi Chef: Haha, sorry to disappoint you! But I'll be watching these guys from the back today.
Regular Patron: Ah, there you are, Chef! Sure had me worried when I heard you collapsed. Glad to see you up and about.
Ever since they opened for lunch, it's been a constant stream of customers walking through Miyasato's doors.
However, (Captain) and Kyuta do a commendable job pleasing the crowds with their sushi-pressing prowess.
The chef sits behind the two, watching over them warmly.
Working underground are the kappa, Zeta, Beatrix, Cassius, Siegfried, and Kaz.
Lyria and Vyrn are making sure the line outside is orderly and that each customer inside is attended to.
Lyria: Teehee. Everyone's talking about how delicious the sushi is, Kyuta!
Kyuta: Yeah! It makes me so happy to see all their smiles!
Kyuta: Now to just keep up the pace throughout the day!
The vibrant atmosphere that fills the sushi house instills (Captain) and company with positive energy.
Fireworks are set to go off later that night. The Miyasato staff gear up for peak hours.
Lyria: The customer in the corner on the right would like their gari on a separate dish!
Vyrn: Let's see... Next order of to-go sushi is five select-grade sets. Two with no sabi, and one of those with less rice.
Male Patron: Check, please!
Lyria: Ah, I'll be right there!
Kyuta: Kappa! The last one was demonbream, so...
Sushi Chef: Wait, Kyuta. I think they wanted no sabi in that one?
Kyuta: Kappa, you're right!
Even more customers come flooding in after the sun sets, turning Miyasato into a beehive of activity.
The dramatic increase in customers leads to confusion underground as well.
Hasuo: Zeta! Is the shari ready?
Zeta: The vinegar needs more time to seep in... I'm so sorry it's late!
Hasuo: It's okay! The fact that you're still standing for your first time here during such busy hours is an accomplishment in itself!
Maita: Cassius! You finish chopping up the fish yet?
Cassius: No... I'm only halfway done. Would it be wiser to prioritize speed?
Maita: Quality is everything, so feel free to take your time with that! I'll handle the other tasks!
Beatrix: Darn it. I hate to say it, but we're not being much help, are we?
Yoshiko: That's not true at all! It'd be complete chaos down here without your help!
One wrong step could damage Miyasato's reputation.
While prioritizing quality, they try to improve their speed as much as possible.
Child: Is my salmun sushi ready yet?
Mother: It shouldn't be much longer now. Why don't we look at the menu together in the meantime, dearie? I wonder what this sea urkin thing is...
Father: After all that waiting outside, they're gonna make us wait some more in here? Geez...
Lyria: Sorry to keep you waiting! Two plates of demonbream sushi!
Child: Eh... I don't like demons...
Regular Patron 2: I ordered the demonbream! Hope you at least remembered to keep the shari on the small side!
Father: It's salmun we asked for! And how much longer is it gonna take!
Lyria: Um... Sorry, I'll be right with you!
Kyuta: It's my fault. I didn't make it in order...
Sushi Chef: Happens to everyone. The important thing is to learn from your mistakes.
Sushi Chef: (This isn't looking good though... We've got so many more customers than even the day of the Riverfolk Festival...)
Friday: Just as I thought... The crew's efforts count for barely a drop in the bucket!
With her FRIED SHRIMP planted in the ground, Friday surveys the activity happening below.
Friday: So it's come to this... I'll do whatever it takes to get them some R & R!
She retracts her FRIED SHRIMP and flies off, a fierce determination in her eyes.

Kappa Summer Chronicle - Chapter 6: Miyasato Crisis - Episode 3

Someone sets fire to all the fish in the icebox room. The despair deepens when they learn that there's no fish available at port either, and things reach rock-bottom when news hits that Kyuta's father, Maita, has collapsed from overwork.

The fireworks show is about to begin. Miyasato is still packed to the brim and as lively as ever.
However, exhaustion is beginning to wear down (Captain) and company.
Vyrn: Fella to the corner on the left is asking for his bonito sushi.
Kyuta: We're out of bonito... They need to send us more from below...
Beatrix: Huff... Huff...
Kyuta: Oh, Beatrix! We could use—
Beatrix: (Captain), Kyuta, we have a problem!
Kyuta: Hm, what's wrong? You look startled...
Beatrix: All of our fish has been torched!
A burnt odor wafts from the icebox room connected to the cave's underground workspace.
(Captain) and Kyuta rush there in a hurry.
Kyuta: This is awful... All the fish are ruined...
Zeta: Guys! Is it okay for both of you to be away from the customers?
Kyuta: The boss said he can handle things while we're down here...
Zeta, Cassius, Kaz, and Siegfried have already gathered in the room.
Cassius: I was the first to discover the scene. Allow me to explain the circumstances.
Cassius explains that he sensed a noxious fume while in search for ingredients and discovered the foodstuffs in the icebox room burning.
Cassius: My first instinct was to quell the fire. Leaving the kappa to continue their work, I gathered our crew members to douse the flames.
Cassius: We then extinguished the flames in an expedient manner, but the food items had already been charred.
Though the room itself is spared, Cassius laments that all the fish have been damaged.
Kaz: Can't very well be using scorched ingredients for sushi...
Kyuta: Kyuu... Are there any other fish we can use?
Zeta: The stuff we'd already carried over to our workspace is fine... So at least until that runs out.
Siegfried: ...
Siegfried ruminates over how the incident might have played out.
Siegfried: Cassius, Kaz, you two continue working here. Zeta, can you talk to the chef and figure out a plan?
Siegfried: Beatrix, think you can go to port and see if you can secure any fish for immediate use?
Siegfried: (Captain), Kyuta, I know you're worried, but it's best if you two returned to the counter for now.
Cassius: A most sensible course of action... Do you already have an idea how this may have come to pass?
Siegfried: I believe I do...
Following Siegfried's orders, each go on with their assigned tasks.
Siegfried: (It couldn't have happened by natural causes. It was either magic, or...)
Siegfried delves further into the cave from the icebox room.
(Captain) and Kyuta return to the counter and somehow manage to fulfill the massive number of sushi orders.
The situation looks dire as their supply of fish begins to run out.
Vyrn: For the items we can't make anymore, I made sure to blot them out from the menu signboard.
Lyria: But that's going to be everything on the menu soon enough...
Kyuta: I'm sure it'll work out! We just have to hold until more fish comes in from the port!
Beatrix: Pant... Wheeze...
An out-of-breath Beatrix bursts in through the door.
Kyuta: Beatrix! Where are the fish?
Beatrix: I'm so sorry! There aren't any more fish at port...
Beatrix: All the shops on the island knew how busy it'd get today, so they stocked up on fish this morning...
Kyuta: Oh no...
Beatrix: Ugh, if only there were something I could do...
Cassius: Kyuta, it's an emergency. Come at once.
Kyuta: Cassius? But I can't leave—
Cassius: Maita has collapsed.
With their food supply lost and the confusion and disarray reaching a fever pitch, the news from Cassius hits like a tidal wave.
Though smiles abound among the customers, an unprecedented crisis has no doubt breached Miyasato's doors.

Kappa Summer Chronicle - Chapter 6: Miyasato Crisis - Episode 4

Kyuta rushes worriedly to his father's side but ends up being the one who receives a jolt of warmth and inspiration. With a box of unique sushi ingredients from his father, Kyuta runs back up and convinces the sushi chef to keep Miyasato running. Kaz, Zeta, and Beatrix instill further hope by offering to go catch some fish from the sea. Just as things seem to be getting back on track, a man that complicates the situation steps into the shop.

Kyuta: Huff... Huff...
Kyuta runs to his home in the cave where his father is resting.
Cassius: It appears exhaustion has set in. He's been spending his afternoons training us and his nights preparing fish, all with little rest.
Cassius: I suspect that while some of us were extinguishing the fire, Maita took on the extra load himself. And that's when his condition worsened drastically.
Cassius: My apologies. I am to blame for not considering the toll that this was taking on his body.
Kyuta: It's not their fault... The real problem is...
Kyuta: Pappa!
Maita is lying quietly on his stone bed when Kyuta runs over.
Maita: Kyuta...
Kyuta: I heard you fell and had to be carried here... Are you feeling okay?
Maita slowly props himself up and turns to Maita.
Maita: You big dummy!
Kyuta: Kappa?
Maita: You don't have time to be checking on me! Get back to work right this moment!
Maita: Waste another second here and Miyasato's reputation will—
Maita: Hack... Wheeze...
Suffering from a terrible cough, he lies back down.
Kyuta: But, but... We have no more fish, there's so many customers, and everyone's so tired...
Kyuta: It's all my fault... If only I never said I'd help make the sushi upstairs!
Maita: What happened to the smiles we were going to bring everyone?
Kyuta: ...!
Maita: The moment you said that, Kyuta, it became everyone's dream!
Maita: Kyuta... Your sushi was incredible. Better than anything else I've ever had in my life!
Maita: I'm sure you can do it, Kyuta! Go on and bring smiles to the whole wide world!
Maita: Or... are you going to give it all up?
Kyuta: ...
Kyuta: I definitely want to keep going!
Kyuta: I'm going to make sure every last customer who comes to Miyasato walks away a happy person!
Kyuta: But without fish, I'm not sure I can do it...
Maita: Are you sure about that?
Maita points to the contents of a box by his bedside.
Kyuta: Wh-what is this?
Maita: There are things more important than tradition... You said it yourself, Kyuta.
Maita: I'm sure this'll come in handy. Go on—take it!
Kyuta: Pappa!
Kyuta: Thank you! I'll do everything I can, Pappa!
With a fiery resolve in his eyes, Kyuta runs back with the box in his arms.
Maita: (It's on you now... Little Chef...)
Maita watches his son proudly from behind.
Miyasato continues to attract customers while Kyuta is checking on his father.
Lyria: I'm so sorry, but we're out of that type of fish...
Male Patron: Check, please!
Female Patron: I'm ready to order!
Lyria: Okay! I'll be right with you!
Vyrn: Kyuta, we're still waiting on the sabi on a separate plate and the boxed sushi order...
(Captain) and company have their hands so full that they have no time to worry about their dearth of ingredients.
Just then, someone else comes running up the stairs.
Kaz: (Captain), we're fresh out of food. The fish you see on this slate is all we've got left!
(Captain) takes the plate, noting the reduced variety of fish and how light it is compared to before.
Sushi Chef: ...
The chef bites his lip upon hearing the news from Kaz.
Sushi Chef: Let's close the shop.
Sushi Chef: You all pulled off a fantastic job. I won't let anyone say a bad word about you.
  1. But we still have all these customers...
  2. We can't just call it quits like this!

Choose: But we still have all these customers...
Choose: We can't just call it quits like this!
Sushi Chef: What can you do without any more fish?
Sushi Chef: Everyone's drained... And Maita worked till he dropped.
Sushi Chef: We've reached our limits. Closing the shop is the only thing left to do—
Kyuta: We can't give up!
Kyuta returns and places the contents of his box on the plate.
Sushi Chef: Kyuta... What's that for?
Kyuta: We're going to use it for the sushi!
Sushi Chef: Are you serious? I don't think I've ever seen that done...
  1. It should make the customers happy.
  2. Are you saying tradition is what matters?

Choose: It should make the customers happy.
Choose: Are you saying tradition is what matters?
Vyrn: (Captain)'s right! The smiles of everyone who walks through Miyasato's doors is what really counts!
Sushi Chef: I know that, but we've never even tried this sort of recipe before...
Kyuta: I've had this enough times to know that it goes with rice like apple goes with candy!
Sushi Chef: Fair enough... But it's not enough by itself! You'll still need some fish!
Kyuta: They didn't have any more at the port. But...
  1. I'm sure there's plenty at sea!

Choose: I'm sure there's plenty at sea!
Kyuta: That's right! Sig and Ghandagoza are out there catching us lots and lots of fish!
Kaz: I'd better go lend those two a hand!
Kaz: Not like I can do much here without any fish... Might as well go catch myself some!
Another pair of footsteps can be heard coming up from underground.
Zeta: I heard what's going on!
Zeta: C'mon, Kaz. We're coming with you!
Beatrix: Heheh! This'll be a total cakewalk compared to some of the stuff I've been through!
Beatrix: The others down there haven't thrown in the towel either! They're busting their chops trying to come up with a solution!
Kaz: Things'll go that much smoother with you two around! But there's no time—we've gotta set sail right away!
Kyuta: Boss! Now all we have to do is keep things running until they get back!
Sushi Chef: This... might actually work out...
Just as (Captain) and company manage to find the silver lining that may very well set them back on track, a man steps inside the sushi house before being ushered in.
Lyria: Um, can you please wait a moment longer? I'm not sure if we have any—
???: Oh, but I do spot exactly one empty seat. Which works out perfectly, since I've come alone. It'll be fine.
???: A counter seat... Excellent, that means I get to talk with the chef. Just like at a bar!
The crew is taken aback by their sudden guest.
The man looks around and takes his seat with a refined elegance.

Kappa Summer Chronicle - Chapter 6: Miyasato Crisis - Episode 5

The crew do everything within their power to fulfill the gourmet Savarin's order: the chef's choice. Siegfried brings in abalone, Friday—after being taken in by the dragon knight for ruining the fish—brings in fried prawn, and along with the cucumber Maita provided earlier, they produce sushi that garners even Savarin's highest praise. As excitement runs high, Sig and Ghandagoza return with a massive fish—the God Albacore.

The man dressed in classy attire observes Miyasato's facilities and menu items with profound curiosity.
Vyrn: Wait a sec, isn't that...
  1. Gourmet Savarin!
  2. Just some guy we've seen before...

Choose: Gourmet Savarin!
The memories come flooding back for (Captain).

Choose: Just some guy we've seen before...
Vyrn: Was it in Bistro Feendrache we saw him? Actually, they renamed it to Bistro Drachenritter...
Vyrn: Anyhoo, he's the guy who runs that place now!
The memories come flooding back for (Captain).
Savarin's fame as a proud bon vivant is known far and wide.
Continue 1
Vyrn: If he drops by and finds fault with the food you serve, that bad rep gets around fast!
Savarin: You must be... (Captain)? What a pleasant surprise to find you on this quaint little island.
Savarin: I'm not sure why you're here, but now you have my hopes up.
Sushi Chef: He's already taken a seat! Darn it, if only I'd buckled down with closing the shop earlier!
Savarin: Can I get my order, please?
Lyria: Of course! Um, what would you like?
Savarin: I'll have the "chef's choice." I don't mind how much it costs—I only care to see if you can satisfy my palate.
Oblivious to Miyasato's circumstances, Savarin's eyes light up as he places his order.
Vyrn: Aw crud... He chose the worst possible time to ask for the chef's choice!
(Captain) and Kyuta turn to each other in this time of crisis.
Kyuta: Whew...
Determination coursing through their veins, the two take a deep breath before speaking.
Kyuta: Chef's choice coming right up!
  1. Chef's choice coming right up!

Choose: Chef's choice coming right up!
Savarin: Hm... Love the confidence.
Sushi Chef: What the... Kyuta! (Captain)!
Kyuta: We can't expect customers to be happy if we're down ourselves!
Kyuta: Things are tough right now, but that's what'll drive us to make the best chef's choice there's ever been... I know we can do it!
Sushi Chef: Kyuta...
Sushi Chef: The best there's ever been, huh...
Sushi Chef: You're right. Miyasato means so much to each and every one of us. We're only going to regret it later if we don't give it our all.
Feeling more resolute than ever, the chef stands up and stretches his arms.
Sushi Chef: I think I've had enough rest... I'll take on all the orders you've got right now.
Sushi Chef: Except for Savarin's. I'm counting on you two to pull out all the stops for his order!
Kyuta: Kappa! You'll leave it to us?
Sushi Chef: Yes. Because I know you two won't be bound by tradition.
Sushi Chef: In fact, I'm expecting you to surpass tradition and come up with the finest selection that Miyasato has ever seen.
Kyuta: Boss... You got it!
  1. We'll make you proud!
  2. This Chef's choice will be the best choice!

Choose: We'll make you proud!
Choose: This Chef's choice will be the best choice!
Sushi Chef: I'm counting on you two!
Savarin: They seem awfully busy... Even if they do need time to prepare, making the customer wait too long is bad policy.
Savarin: I hope I'm not sitting at the counter for nothing... I was hoping to have an enjoyable talk...
Vyrn: Shucks, Savarin is startin' to look bored...
Just then, those behind the counter hear knocking from the back door.
Kyuta: Did Kaz and the others come back with fish already? This fast?
(Captain) offers to have a chat with Savarin to keep him occupied.
Vyrn: Good idea... Then can we leave the back door to you, Kyuta?
Kyuta: I'm on it!
Savarin: Good day to you, (Captain). Here to shoot the breeze with me?
  1. Discuss the origins of sushi.
  2. Talk about Vane.

Choose: Discuss the origins of sushi.
Savarin: You'll share what you know with me? Hm, consider me interested.

Choose: Talk about Vane.
Savarin: Ah, a knight who can cook up a storm like him is something you only see once in a blue moon... I wonder if he's well these days.
Continue 2
(Captain) and Savarin chew the fat, whiling away the time.
Meanwhile, Kyuta runs out the back door.
Siegfried: Sorry to keep you away from making sushi, but I have something to report on.
Friday: ...
Siegfried yanks Friday over. She remains silent with a grim expression.
Siegfried reveals that icebox room incident was all Friday's doing.
Kyuta: Ka-kappappappa!
Siegfried: She no doubt used her FRIED SHRIMP, otherwise known as a Fantastically Radical Idea for Ending Drudgery, Saving Human Resources from Infinite Mental Pain.
Siegfried: While we were so preoccupied with our tasks, Friday snuck into the underground cave.
Siegfried: However, we were present down there the whole time. Which means she had take a very specific route to go unnoticed...
Kyuta: Oh, I know! The cave's connected to the sea! Like when I first ran out from home...
Siegfried: That's right. She swam in from the sea and infiltrated through the cave.
Siegfried: When I found her on the beach, her swimsuit was soaking wet.
Kyuta: Why would you do such a thing...
Friday: To save the chef and all of you kappa from the horrors of overtime!
Friday: I figured with your food supply gone, you would have no choice but to close shop... thereby gaining unbridled freedom!
Friday: I wanted to liberate you from the shackles of your overworked past... Nothing more, nothing less...
Kyuta: Friday... You were worried about us?
Kyuta: But... we've decided to keep at it and do our best today!
Friday: How about tomorrow? And the day after? Are you going to keep going till you drop?
Friday: "Oh, it's only for today. Won't take me too long..." Blegh, that's what they all tell themselves. But too often they keep pushing themselves harder and harder.
Friday: There's no way I can just let that fly! How much longer do you think they can work when they've passed out and can't move anymore from exhaustion!
Siegfried: I agree that the strain placed on your body from overtaxing it for days on end is not something that should be ignored.
Siegfried: As Friday suggests, there certainly are problems that cannot be solved by sheer willpower and man-hours alone.
Kyuta: Kyuu... Well...
Siegfried: We'll need to have a good, long discussion later with everyone involved about how to handle things in the future.
Siegfried: Fortunately, we're already seeing some forward momentum in spreading out the division of labor.
Siegfried: It may take time, Kyuta, but I'm sure you're all ready to tackle the problem head-on and find a working solution.
Friday: But that just means—
Siegfried: Friday, if you know how important it is to work hard, then you should also know that this is a critical time for Miyasato.
Siegfried: If you strip them of their chance in the spotlight, all this talk about work ethics will amount to nothing. Can you tell me I'm wrong?
Friday: ...
Friday: A critical time, eh?
Friday: Kyuta, was it? Take this.
Still restrained by Siegfried, Friday wriggles about and produces a brown bag.
Friday: This is what I've been eating for energy. Just one of these should fire you up.
Kyuta: Friday!
Friday: I only ask that you take a well-deserved rest tomorrow.
Friday: If you continue working yourself to the bone, I'll be back to wipe you of the past that chains you to your antiquated work ethic!
Kyuta responds with an emphatic nod and takes the bag.
Siegfried: I'll hand Friday over to the local authorities.
Siegfried: One more thing, Kyuta. This should come in handy.
Siegfried places a large crate in front of Kyuta.
Siegfried: Inside are shellfish known as abalone. I gathered them from the nearby beach. Already drained them of sand as well.
Kyuta: Shellfish? You mean...
Siegfried: After reading the sightseeing brochure, I had an idea that maybe sushi would be the best way to enjoy shellfish.
Kyuta: Kappa! Thank you! I think I can make something really good with this!
Kyuta rushes back with the crate and pours its contents onto a platter.
Kyuta: There's this too!
Next, he adds the items from Friday's bag to the platter.
Vyrn: Abalone makes sense... You sure about that other thing though?
Kyuta: I had a bite and it was delicious!
Savarin: You make for a marvelous conversationalist, (Captain), but is my chef's choice ready by any chance?
Savarin's tone suggests he is not willing to wait much longer.
Vyrn: Dagnabbit, the fish ain't here yet...
Cassius: Try using this fish.
Kyuta: Cassius! Where did you get this?
Cassius: From the icebox room, of course.
Cassius: Hasuo, Yoshiko, and I rummaged through the burnt fish to find any edible parts.
Cassius: That's when we discovered that the salmun are largely intact. Despite the burn marks, they give off a wonderful scent.
Cassius: Consider it roasted salmun... Raw they may not be, but I can vouch for their taste.
Kyuta: Cassius... Thank you!
Yasu: Try using this too.
Kyuta: Yasu!
Yasu: I heard everything from Siegfried. This here's rolled omelet.
Yasu: I figured that it might not actually be necessary to restrict yourself to fish. So I tried testing different items that might work for sushi.
Kyuta: You did all that? But I thought you'd given up—
Yasu: Heck no, there's no way I could ever give up being a sushi chef for good after spending damn near my whole life watching my old man do his thing.
Sushi Chef: Yasu, you...
Yasu: I always thought it'd mean nothing if I didn't end up better than you, Dad.
Yasu: But then it just hit me when I saw how hard everyone was working...
Yasu: What really matters isn't outdoing you in the sushi-making department...
Yasu: It's to see one helluva grin on every customer who walks through those doors!
Yasu: I'm heading back to the fireworks show. Miyasato's in your hands now, Kyuta!
Kyuta: Yasu!
Kyuta: Together with (Captain), we'll make everyone's dreams come true!
(Captain) gives a big thumbs-up and checks out the new supply of ingredients.
Feeling refreshed and reinvigorated, the two young sushi chefs resume their sushi-pressing.
Kyuta: Thank you for waiting!
Savarin's order of chef's choice comes out on a wooden board.
Savarin: Oh my... What a refreshing arrangement of colors. I feel better just looking at it.
Savarin: I take it this is... fried prawn?
Kyuta: Mm-hm! I wrapped it in nori and turned it into sushi!
Kyuta: (I used that food Friday eats for energy!)
Savarin: The veritable explosion of color is certainly pleasing to the eye, but let's see how these taste.
Savarin: Munch, munch... Aaah!
Savarin: The pep of the prawn gives vivacity to the vinegared rice!
Savarin: The crunchy batter launches the prawn into the night sky and melts under the caress of my tongue!
Savarin: This taste can only be described as the fireworks show in edible form!
Vyrn: There he goes again with his culinary mumbo-jumbo!
Savarin's face beams with joy as he tries the other sushi: rolled omelet, roasted salmun, and abalone.
The dramatic soliloquies that accompany every bite he takes suggest that he may very well be in sushi heaven.
Savarin: (Captain), Kyuta... I must applaud your culinary skills. Every piece of sushi was a true delight.
Savarin: But what of this last one? Its deceptively modest appearance beguiles its overwhelming presence.
Savarin: A cucumber roll... Can you tell me the name of this sushi?
Kyuta responds cheerfully.
Kyuta: It's a kappa roll!
Savarin: A kappa roll, I see... Now to sample its taste.
Savarin: Agh!
  1. Are you okay?

Choose: Are you okay?
Savarin: Was I... sleeping?
Savarin: The moment the kappa roll passed through my mouth, a warm, intimate sensation took me away, propping me up on the ocean waves...
Savarin: What it lacks in gaudiness, it makes up for in its gentle, heartwarming taste.
Savarin: It is akin to the hand sparklers that people quietly frolic with after the conclusion of a lively festival.
Savarin: Bravo! What a fantastic showing, truly worthy of the name "chef's choice"!
Savarin stands up to applaud the young chefs.
  1. Thank you!

Choose: Thank you!
Kyuta: Thank you!
Sushi Chef: You two really pulled it off! Without the traditional notion of what sushi must be to bog you down, you got really creative... Looks like I still have something to learn!
Vyrn: Awesome job, guys! Word's gonna spread about the crazy, unique sushi of Miyasato that everyone ought to try out for themselves!
Lyria: I was getting hungry just watching... I'd like to have some for myself later!
Kyuta: Ehehe... (Captain), we did it!
Sig: Outta the way!
Ghandagoza: Make room for God Albacooore!
Vyrn: Whoa!
Sig and Ghandagoza suddenly burst into the shop.
Sig: Sorry to keep you guys waiting! We've brought the finest fish we could scrounge up to make the finest sushi!
God Albacore: ...!
Kyuta: Kappa! This fish...
Kyuta: Kappa!
Kyuta: I saw it before!
Lyria: This one... doesn't seem to be a primal beast! It's just a really large fish!
Sig: Still though, it's so plump and lively that it could give the regular Albacore a run for its money!
Lancelot: It was no easy feat hanging this catch the way you see it now.
Vane: Wahahaha! Sure wasn't expecting something this big when they said we'd be fishing!
Percival: You harebrained optimist. Did you really think Sig and Ghandagoza would invite us out for a simple fishing excursion?
Vyrn: Whoa... You guys chipped in too?
God Albacore: ...!
Ghandagoza: Nwahaha! Look at it bounce around even while it is suspended!
Savarin: O-o-ohmigosh! Did someone say God Albacore?
Savarin: Albacore, the cataclysmic primal beast that soars the skies and tramples everything in its path...
Savarin: The God Albacore bears a striking resemblance to that calamity, being equally large, fearsome, and savory!
Savarin: You couldn't get farther from calamity with this one! It can only be a gift from the gods!
Savarin: We must be living in a fairy tale! Have I not awoken from my dream of kappa rolls yet?
Sig: You ready, (Captain)?
Sig: Let's get the God Albacore filleting show started!

Kappa Summer Chronicle - Ending

Thanks to the newly-brought-in God Albacore and the smaller fish from Kaz's group, Miyasato continues operating into the night without a hitch. With the eventful day behind them, the crew stay on Tono Island for some time to assist with training new staff. As a parting gift, they receive a box from Kyuta that is packed with sushi as well as pickled plum and cucumber rice balls. Recounting the many wonderful memories they had on this island, the crew promise to return one day.

After gutting the God Albacore, Kaz's group, who went to pick up their own variety of fish, return.
Miyasato continues operating until the wee hours of the night, making it through this busy day unscathed.
Lyria: Wow... It's so sparkly...
Vyrn: Huh? That one went out really fast...
Siegfried: Try holding it with your back against the ocean breeze. Should last longer that way.
After closing up shop...
The crew had invited the chef and kappa out for some handheld fireworks to celebrate.
Beatrix: Who knew you could be so considerate, Cassius! I'd never have guessed you had sparklers all prepared for us!
Cassius: I simply bought them at one of the stalls. I wanted to see for myself how they operate.
Zeta: Looks like we could all use a lesson from Cassius on how to bask in a summer vacation.
Zeta: From eating grilled rice balls to touring a festival with your own yukata to helping out as a cook... You even got to be Kyuta's mentor, to boot.
Cassius: Heh... I won't deny that it's been an engrossing summer.
Beatrix: Sheesh, would it kill you to just say it's been a blast!
Cassius: Is that your way of telling me to say I'm having fun? What point is there in forcing such a thing? Doing so would be most irrational...
Beatrix: Gah, enough already! Now I'm your mentor! Repeat after me—it's been so much fun! Hooray! Hooray!
Cassius: It's been fun...
Beatrix: Haha, that's more like it!
Kyuta: Pappa, are you feeling better?
Maita: Yeah... I'm much better now after taking that long-overdue nap.
Kyuta: Kappa... I'm really glad to hear that...
Kyuta: Thanks for the cucumbers! If I didn't have those...
Maita: Tradition isn't everything... I simply took your words to heart, Kyuta.
Maita: I noticed how much you'd grown by seeing the outside world.
Kyuta: Ehehe... It's all thanks to (Captain) and everyone else!
Kyuta: I'm going to keep training to become the best sushi chef I can be!
Maita: Maybe I can grab you some fish from the port to use.
Kyuta: Kappa! Pappa?
Maita: I want to learn other things I can do to put smiles on our customers' faces.
Maita: I suppose I should start by looking into the tools I'll need.
Kyuta: Oh, I can help with that! First, you'll want this really big sharp thing called a fishing hook...
Yasu: Dad, any chance you're willing to take me in as your apprentice again?
Yasu: I probably seem like a bumbling fool who can't make up his mind, but...
Sushi Chef: Junior apprentice.
Yasu: Huh?
Sushi Chef: You'll be starting again on a clean slate. Which makes Kyuta your senior.
Sushi Chef: Just as long as you're okay with that.
Yasu: Dad! Yeah, sounds good to me!
Sushi Chef: Heh! I've missed that sparkle in your eyes.
Sushi Chef: Welcome back, Son.
Sig: You know, I've always found handheld fireworks to be a real wonder.
Lyria: Yeah... They somehow help me remember all the fun of the day.
Ghandagoza: Urk! Why must these irksome little contraptions be so difficult to handle!
Ghandagoza: They're so small I can hardly grasp them in my palms...
Vyrn: Ahaha... Nice to see the big old guy doing things his way...
Kyuta: (Captain)! Let's have a contest to see whose sparkler lasts the longest!
Kyuta: Cassius said it would be logical for me to extend my webbed hands to block off the wind!
(Captain) accepts Kyuta's challenge, and they light their fireworks simultaneously.
Kyuta: Kappa... It's so shiny...
Kyuta: It wasn't easy today, (Captain), but I had so much fun!
  1. You can say that again.
  2. I'm beat...

Choose: You can say that again.
Kyuta: Ehehe... It's because you were there with me the whole time, (Captain)!
Kyuta: It all happened so fast, just like this sparkler!

Choose: I'm beat...
Kyuta: Ahaha... To be honest, I'm beat too...
Kyuta: But at the same time, I'm so relieved that I'll be able to get a really good night's rest later!
Continue 1
Kyuta: Ah, mine's running out...
Kyuta: Hehe, yours too!
Sig dunks their faded sparklers in a nearby water-filled bucket.
Cat: Meow!
Kyuta: Kappa!
A cat suddenly crosses their path.
(Captain) picks the cat up and holds it out to Kyuta.
  1. Aren't these paw pads adorable?

Choose: Aren't these paw pads adorable?
Kyuta: C-cat hands! Is it okay if I touch them?
Cat: Meow!
Kyuta: Kappappappa! They're so soft and fluffy!
(Captain) and company continue to mingle about, with an abundant supply of sparklers to keep them engaged.
Each time a new one is lit up, another summer memory sparks the conversation anew.
They watch the fireworks contentedly, feeling the summer wash over them.
Maita: Hyegh! A fresh supply of salmun just came in!
Hasuo: Hyegh! The rice and fish are ready to use for sushi!
Days after the fireworks show, the kappa are working happily at Miyasato.
With Savarin's high praise, the sushi house has gained even greater fame.
They've begun hiring more staff to keep up with customer demand. A new wind blows over Miyasato.
It goes without mentioning that their newest staple is a big hit.
Kyuta: Here are your kappa rolls!
(Captain) agrees to help train Miyasato's latest apprentice chefs, allowing the crew to stay on the island for a short while longer.
Once things begin taking off with the new staff, the crew decides it is time to leave.
Sushi Chef: (Captain)... I can't thank you enough. You've done so much for us.
Lyria: We're just glad we got to eat so much yummy sushi!
Vyrn: All righty, Chef. You take care of yourself!
Lyria: Hm? Where's Kyuta?
Yasu: How odd. He was here just a moment ago...
Vyrn: Well... We've gotta prep the airship, so we really gotta get going...
Dismayed that they are unable to say their final farewells to Kyuta, (Captain) and company depart Miyasato.
Vyrn: The ship's taking off soon... I guess this is it, Kyuta...
Kyuta's Voice: (Captain)!
Lyria: Ah! Kyuta!
The crew descends the Grandcypher to greet him.
Kyuta: Thank goodness I made it on time! I'd like you to have this!
Lyria: What's in the big box...
Kyuta: Since it's a farewell gift to people really important to me, I put everything I had into making these!
(Captain) takes the box from Kyuta and, peeking at the contents, finds it packed with many varieties of sushi.
Lyria: Wow! Thank you!
Vyrn: Whoa, I think we've got some jumbo-sized sushi in here too...
  1. This must be...

Choose: This must be...
Kyuta: Hehe, rice balls!
Kyuta: I'll never forget the taste of that pickled plum rice ball you first made me, (Captain)!
Kyuta: That's why I wanted to make you some myself on your last day here!
  1. You're the best, Kyuta!
  2. I'll savor every bite!

Choose: You're the best, Kyuta!
Choose: I'll savor every bite!
Kyuta: I should be able to make even tastier sushi the next time you visit, (Captain)!
Kyuta: So... I hope you'll come to Tono Island again someday... Sniff...
Vyrn: Aw, cheer up, buddy... It only makes it that much harder for us to leave...
Kyuta: Okay... I'll hold it in...
Kyuta: Heheh... I'll be waiting for your next visit to Tono Island!
Just as (Captain) responds with a resolute and cheery nod, the bell for takeoff sounds.
With a lingering farewell in their hearts, (Captain) and company board the Grandcypher and call out to Kyuta.
Vyrn: Take care, Kyuta!
Kyuta: You too, everybody!
The crew continue waving their hands until Kyuta becomes a tiny dot in the distance.
Even when Tono Island is no longer in view, their eyes are still fixed in its direction.
Rice balls, cats, yukata, sushi, kappa, chef's choice, God Albacore, sparklers...
Their precious summer memories.
Recounting the fun times they had on the island together, they try the rice balls that Kyuta had made for them.
Lyria: Mnph! It's so deliciously sour!
Lyria: And the crispiness goes so well with rice!
Vyrn: Wait, isn't this cucumber?
Vyrn: So he put pickled plum and cucumber together, huh... Way to go, Kyuta!
While munching on a rice ball, (Captain) recalls all those hours spent standing behind the counter with Kyuta...
One day, they will definitely return to Tono Island and partake in more scrumptious sushi.
Perhaps by then, pickled plum and cucumber sushi will have become a regular item on the menu.
The End

Kappa Summer Chronicle - Supreme Sushi Chef Introduction - Welcome to Miyasato

(Captain) and company rose above the challenges presented to them on the day of the fireworks show, ending the occasion on a high note.
By the sushi chef's request, the crew remains on the island for some time thereafter.
Kyuta: (Captain)! Hehe, I couldn't be happier to stand behind the counter with you again!
(Captain), Kyuta, and the sushi chef are already in uniform before Miyasato's opening hours.
Behind them are roughly ten people watching the three in awe.
Sushi Apprentice 1: Oh my gosh! Don't they just look so dependable?
Sushi Apprentice 2: Being able to watch the legendary duo in action is a dream come true!
Sushi Chef: We put out a call for more staff and have already gotten plenty of trainees.
Sushi Chef: They really want to see you two at work.
Kyuta: I guess Savarin spreading the good word about us definitely made a difference!
Yasu: Good day to you, Kyuta, (Captain). I'll also be studying up on your technique!
Kyuta: Kappa? You're being unusually polite, Yasu... And why are you with the other apprentices?
Sushi Chef: You're technically his senior now. I guess that's just his way of showing respect.
Sushi Chef: Anyhow, it's time to open up shop! Everyone ready?
(Captain) and Kyuta once again put their sushi-pressing skills to the test in order to show the new apprentices what it takes to get the job done.
However, no matter the reason, (Captain) is able to put on a suave, sophisticated expression when standing behind the counter, resembling that of a true sushi chef.
  1. Welcome to Miyasato!

Choose: Welcome to Miyasato!
(Captain) greets every customer who walks into Miyasato with great gusto.
