Lament of the Fallen
Alexiel helps to lessen the load on the crew by taking on a request alone—one that has her traveling to an island she once operated from. The island has been suffering from poor harvests, which she believes stems from stagnation of the elements.
The sun has set on another day.
Alexiel reports to the crew her success on a solo mission.
Alexiel: In addition to the promised reward, the client also gifted us a few boxes of fruit out of appreciation.
Vyrn: Yay, fruit!
Lyria: To think that you're finally taking on requests alone... You've really come a long way as a skyfarer, Alexiel!
Alexiel: Yes, this was quite a valuable experience as my first solo mission. Though there were things I could have done better as well.
Vyrn: Hey, no need to be humble! The client sent us a letter showerin' ya with praise.
Vyrn: Right, (Captain)?
Choose: You're a huge help as always.
Alexiel: You all, too, have lent me countless aid. I am glad to repay the favor, even if only slightly.
Choose: And I'm proud to be your captain.
Alexiel: I-I am pleased to hear that, even if it is a bit embarrassing...

Lyria: Haha. We're happy to have you in the crew, Alexiel!
Lyria: Given all the assignments you've been helping out with lately, you should definitely take it easy for the rest of today.
Alexiel: Yes, I think I'll do that.
Leaving the others to take care of various odds and ends, Alexiel heaves a sigh.
Alexiel: Though I never did care much about my reputation, I must admit that receiving such praise fills my heart with glee.
Alexiel: Perhaps even Master Uriel will acknowledge the growth I have shown...
Alexiel: No, I must not let pride get the better of me. Rather, I should let my newfound confidence be a reminder to remain humble.
Despite her self-admonishment, Alexiel is unable to contain the joy that surfaces on her face.
Her glee is contagious—noticing that fellow crew members are smiling her way, a bashful Alexiel hurries to her private quarters.
Lyria: Hm, so we can do these requests together... But how about this one?
Alexiel: Is something amiss?
The morning after her first solo mission, Alexiel approaches a meeting in progress. Three sets of eyes look up from a document.
Vyrn: You see, we've got overlapping requests and not enough people...
Alexiel: Allow me to help. If it's to provide protection, or is a monster extermination job, I should be able to handle it alone.
Lyria: Well, we were thinking you could use some rest since you've been working nonstop lately...
Alexiel: Hahah. I appreciate the concern, but I cannot stand idly by while the rest of you toil away.
Lyria: Hrm... Okay then! Thank you, Alexiel!
Vyrn: All right, think you can handle this one? You'll be providing security for a merchant while helping to transport their cargo.
Alexiel: Very well. Where will the cargo be delivered to?
Looking down at the request slip, Alexiel's eyes flutter upon seeing the location.
Vyrn: Huh? What's wrong?
Alexiel: Seeing that island's name brings back fond memories...
Alexiel: Before meeting Master Uriel, I operated from a place not too far from that island.
Vyrn: Oh yeah? Sounds like the perfect assignment for ya then!
Alexiel: Yes, I believe so as well. You will be going on a separate mission, I take it?
Vyrn: Yep! Got us a few monster-hunting requests we can knock out all in one trip!
Alexiel: I see... You may want to bring this along, just in case.
Alexiel raises a hand, causing a single mirror-blade to materialize.
Alexiel: This mirror-blade is imbued with my blessing. Should you fall into grave danger, I will rush to your aid at once.
Alexiel: Of course, I trust you'll be safe. But it never hurts to be prepared for an emergency... Please, consider it a good-luck charm.
(Captain) is swayed and takes the mirror-blade. Alexiel nods in satisfaction.
Alexiel: I suppose I should be going to my client now. Godspeed to all of us.
Lyria: Mm-hm! Be careful out there, Alexiel!
And so the primal beast makes for the island where her client awaits her.
Merchant: Ah, welcome! You must be the skyfarer who accepted my request.
Alexiel: A pleasure to meet you. I was told this was a protection and cargo transport job...
Numerous armed individuals, most likely mercenaries, loiter around the area.
The merchant notices Alexiel's side-eye glances and sounds almost apologetic when addressing her concern.
Merchant: It may seem a bit over-the-top, but they're here on the same job. There are multiple locations to deliver to after all.
Alexiel: It must be a particularly large order for you to hire so many people.
Alexiel: As far as I can tell, these are all victuals?
Merchant: Yes. The purchase was made by the island's authorities themselves.
Merchant: A string of poor harvests has plagued the entire island for quite some time now, leading to a severe food shortage.
Alexiel: And this has continued to the brink of famine?
Merchant: I mean, I'm happy for the business, but it's no joke for the locals.
Alexiel: ...
Alexiel: (Odd... The incredibly rich soil of that island should make it immune to such poor harvests...)
This contradiction has Alexiel ill at ease, leading her to form a hypothesis.
Alexiel: (A yield so meager that it leads to an island-wide shortage... Could the elements be out of balance?)
Alexiel: There may be more to this request than meets the eye.
Alexiel: If this is an anomaly that threatens the lives of skydwellers, it is my duty as Master Uriel's disciple to pinpoint the cause and resolve it.
Heart filled with resolve, Alexiel slaps both her cheeks to steel herself for the challenge ahead.
Lament of the Fallen: Scene 2
Alexiel speaks to villagers about the soil quality, then makes for the mountain where the poor harvests' cause may have originated. She spots a mirror-blade on the ground and reaches out to it, causing a hole to open up in the sky. Recognizing the voice coming from beyond the hole, she leaps into it.
Alexiel accompanies the merchant to a remote village on the island to deliver foodstuffs.
During the merchant's stay, Alexiel has free time to investigate the island's recent crop woes.
Alexiel: (I can sense the impurities in the elements here, particularly the earth element...)
Alexiel: (Never mind crops, not even weeds would grow under such conditions.)
A shadow suddenly crosses the patch of ground that Alexiel is crouched over to assess.
Villager's Voice: Everything okay, miss? If you're having trouble moving, I can piggyback you to the nearest clinic.
Hearing the worried voice from above, Alexiel promptly rises to her feet.
Alexiel: No, you misunderstand... I am not unwell.
Villager: You sure? You were bent down for so long that I started to get worried...
Alexiel: I thought I'd look into the island's poor harvests by examining the soil quality. Thank you for your concern anyhow.
Villager: Ah, that'd explain it. You do look the picture of health on closer inspection.
Villager: We've had to contend with an epidemic around these parts lately as well. As if the monsters weren't enough of a problem...
Alexiel: An epidemic?
Alexiel turns her attention to a line of patients waiting outside the village's only clinic.
Alexiel: Tell me something... When did things start to go sour for the village?
Villager: Hrm? I'd say around... two years ago.
Villager: You see the towering mountain down that way? The trees on that mountain suddenly withering were the first sign of something amiss.
Villager: Monsters that mostly kept to the peak began descending upon the village and ravaging our fields.
Alexiel: Oh? Is that also when the crops stopped growing properly?
Villager: Yes. We barely had anything to harvest last year, while not a single crop has matured this year.
Alexiel: I see... Thank you for the info.
Alexiel studies the barren mountain slope looming in the distance.
Alexiel: It will be too late if the issue is left untended. I must take action at once.
Clenching her fist in a show of resolve, Alexiel departs from the village.
In order to determine the cause of the island's famine, Alexiel wastes no time in heading to the mountain.
Alexiel: (The elemental stagnation is indeed worse here; whatever is causing the anomaly must lie on this mountain. Now to find the source...)
Alexiel: What a foul stench. The water is contaminated like the earth.
Amid the faint scent of decay, Alexiel surveys her surroundings with a frown.
Alexiel: ...!
What was that sound?
What was that sound?
Alexiel: There it is again! It's coming from farther ahead...
Alexiel: (The elements are more stagnant with each step I take... I'm on the right track!)
Alexiel inches ever closer to the source of the sound.
Alexiel: ...!
There!
There!
Something akin to black mud bubbles up incessantly from the cracked ground, resembling a spring.
Alexiel's eyes widen when she spots a flickering glow coming from deep within the foul-smelling mud.
Alexiel: Is that... a mirror-blade? What could it possibly be doing here...
Drawn to the familiar gleam of the mirror-blade submerged in mud, Alexiel instinctively reaches out her hand.
???: ...
Alexiel: Who's there?
In the next instant, the ground begins to shake violently as a blinding pillar of light pierces the sky.
Something peers back from beyond the distorted crack in the blue skies.
Alexiel: ...!
Alexiel: The god-realm has opened up!
???: ...
Alexiel: ...
Although the exact words are hard to make out, a faint voice amid the thunderous roaring is audible from beyond the fissure.
Alexiel's eyes dilate and her lips quiver.
Alexiel: So this is the cause of the anomaly...
Alexiel: Are you calling for me, Belung?
Another thunderous roar follows from beyond the fissure.
That's all Alexiel needs to hear before leaping into the fissure without a moment's hesitation.
Lament of the Fallen: Scene 3
Sensing an anomaly from a mirror-blade Alexiel left with the crew, (Captain) and company follow her tracks all the way to the mountain. With Uriel's assistance, they enter the god-realm and save her from a losing battle in the nick of time.
At some point during Alexiel's absence from the crew, (Captain) notices a small crack in the entrusted mirror-blade.
Taking this as a sign of foreboding, the crew goes to the island where Alexiel was last seen and traces her steps.
Vyrn: Eww... What's with the yucky smell on this mountain? The stuffy air doesn't help either. Something's not right with this place.
Lyria: Alexiel must have climbed the mountain to find out what's causing the island's problems...
Merchant: You're her crewmates, huh? She told one of the villagers she was looking into soil quality, and then disappeared into the mountain.
Merchant: She was up there for so long that the neighborhood watch went searching for her. No luck so far; she must've gone in pretty deep.
Lyria: So that's what happened... Thank you!
Lyria: The crack in the sky appeared some time after Alexiel left the village, they said.
Looking up reveals that a thin fissure still runs through the azure sky.
There was said to be a large hole that coincided with Alexiel's disappearance, though only the crack remains now.
Vyrn: Guh... She tells us not to be reckless, then goes and does somethin' like this! I'm gonna give her an earful when she gets back!
Lyria: I sure hope Alexiel is okay...
The crew continues trekking deeper into the mountain.
Vyrn: Whoa! What's goin' on?
Startled by the sudden sound of an explosion, the crew rushes over to learn what happened.
Uriel: Gah! Open up, you stupid hole!
Lyria: Uriel?
Staring straight up past the withered forest's dead canopy is the lone figure of Uriel, master of Alexiel.
Vyrn: If you're here... does that mean something's happened to Alexiel?
Uriel: You see the crack in the sky too, right? I can feel her fighting on the other side in the god-realm.
Uriel: She's up against the one responsible for this island's mess... A creature of the god-realm that pollutes the elements just by existing.
Vyrn: God-realm?
Uriel: It was a dimension used as a frontline base by the Astrals during the War. Supposedly connects the Sky and Astral Realms somehow.
Uriel: The contaminated elements from the god-realm have seeped through, affecting this island as well.
Uriel glares at the glowing, wound-esque crack.
Uriel: Being that she was once a guardian of the god-realm, Alexiel probably rushed here the moment she sensed something amiss.
Uriel: I wanted to force the crack open to lend her a hand, but the thing won't even budge.
Uriel's words stir something in the captain's memory.
Choose: Think you can use this?
(Captain) produces the good-luck charm Alexiel had left behind before departing.
Uriel: That glow... It's one of her mirror-blades!
Uriel: If I channel the earth element into the mirror-blade and unleash it all in one go, just maybe...
Uriel takes the mirror-blade from (Captain) and leaps toward the fissure.
Uriel: Uryaaaah!
Vyrn: Look! The crack's spreading apart fast!
Lyria: So that's the god-realm...
Uriel's blast opens up a hole in the fissure, allowing a peek into the landscape beyond.
Vyrn: Hey, something strange is spillin' out of the hole!
Uriel: (Captain)! I'm gonna use my power to send you guys to the other side!
Uriel: Bring Alexiel back while I'm able to keep the hole open. Sound good?
The moment (Captain) nods, elements surround the crew members and lift their bodies into the air.
And thus begins Alexiel's rescue from the god-realm.
Giant Dragon: ...!
Alexiel: Ngh!
Unfolding in the god-realm is an intense battle between Alexiel and a massive dragon cloaked in polluted elements.
The primal uses her greatsword to prop up her wounded body, and she glares at her opponent.
Alexiel: Worry not... I'm going to finish you off with this next stroke!
Alexiel: Hraaaah!
With a ferocious shout, Alexiel brings her sword down on the dragon. However...
Giant Dragon: ...!
Alexiel: Curses!
Giant Dragon: ...!
Alexiel: Urk!
The dragon swipes its claw, easily parrying Alexiel's blade before slashing her.
Alexiel: Nhg!
Giant Dragon: ...
Alexiel: No... I cannot afford to lose...
The dragon's massive shadow looms over her as she struggles to rise.
Giant Dragon: ...!
It sends a claw hurtling toward Alexiel yet again.
Lyria's Voice: Colossus! Now!
Colossus: ...
Giant Dragon: ...!
Vyrn: Alexiel! You okay?
Arriving just in time, (Captain) and company gasp at the dire sight of Alexiel.
Lyria: You're terribly hurt, Alexiel! Let's pull back for now! Uriel's keeping the path open for us!
Alexiel: Master Uriel? Rgh, to think I troubled him with this matter...
Alexiel: Even so, I cannot retreat! Not until that creature is put to rest!
Vyrn: C'mon, Alexiel! You're hurt bad enough already!
Alexiel: My mind is made up! I shall stay and fight!
Alexiel: I won't turn my back here! Not again!
Alexiel grits her teeth as she struggles to rise, only to fall back down again—a likely sign that she's reached her limits.
Alexiel: But I...
Giant Dragon: ...!
Colossus: ...
Lyria: Colossus is being pushed back! We need to leave now!
Vyrn: Let's drag Alexiel with us if we've got to!
Nodding in agreement, (Captain) slips under one of Alexiel's arms and half-carries her to the exit.
Alexiel: Belung...
Giant Dragon: ...
Alexiel utters what seems to be the dragon's name before losing consciousness.
