Finding What Works for Me
Clarisse awakens to find herself sleeping on (Captain)'s lap in the garden—a ploy by her mother to get the two closer together. Promethia passes along a message from Cagliostro for Clarisse to take some time off, then gets her daughter to agree to a date with the captain.
Clarisse: Phew, I could really use a breather...
Clarisse: Love that breeze...
Yawn... Could use a bit of shut-eye...
Yawn... Could use a bit of shut-eye...
Clarisse has been practicing day and night to master control over existential dissolution.
Feeling exhaustion set in, Clarisse leans against one of the garden's trees and dozes off.
Promethia: Wake up... risse.
Ca... cold...
Ca... cold...
Clarisse: Mng... Is it morning already? Just a few more minutes...
Clarisse rubs her sleepy eyes, then faces the direction of the voice.
Clarisse: ...!
She finds herself jolted awake, her complexion turning the color of a ripe strawberry.
Clarisse: (Captain)! You too, Mother? Why are the two of you in my room... Wait.
Clarisse: This is... the garden? Oh, right, I meant to rest for a bit, only to then doze off...
Clarisse: Hold on a sec, (Captain)! Was I sleeping on your lap just now?
Promethia: Yes, you were. I asked (Captain) to help make you more comfortable.
Clarisse: What a thing to ask, Mother! Now (Captain)'s seen what I look like sleeping!
Promethia: You had been tossing and turning, Clarisse.
Promethia: I wanted you to have a blissful dream rather than a nightmare, so of course I asked for some help.
Promethia: In fact, you slept so much more peacefully once your head was on (Captain)'s lap.
Promethia: I can only imagine what a wonderful dream you must've been having.
Clarisse: Guhh...
Promethia: Anyhow, Clarisse, maybe you should go wash your face. You've got drool on-
Clarisse: ...!
Why didn't you mention that first!
Why didn't you mention that first!
Clarisse covers her mouth and bolts toward the washroom.
Clarisse: That was so embarrassing, Mother...
Promethia: Embarrassing in a good way, yes?
Clarisse: Well... Augh...
Promethia: Haha, never mind that. Tell me how your studies are going, Clarisse.
Clarisse: Having Mireille and Risette as study partners definitely helps. I'm making more progress than before at refining my control.
Clarisse: But I still have a long way to go...
Promethia: I see...
A look of astonishment crosses Promethia's face.
Clarisse: Huh? Why do you look so surprised, Mother?
Promethia: You've always been extremely confident in yourself, so to see you understanding your current weaknesses and attempting to overcome them...
Promethia: Comes as a very pleasant surprise, Clarisse.
Clarisse: Augh...
Reacting as if her mother's hit a sore spot, the young alchemist holds up a hand and presses it against her chest.
Clarisse: I'm going to take my studies seriously from now on, Mother. You can count on it.
Promethia: And I'll do everything I can to help.
Clarisse: So what did (Captain) and the others want?
Promethia: They had a message from the founder and simply wanted to pass it on.
Clarisse: From Master? What's the message?
Promethia: "You're biting off more than you can chew. Rest up when you get a chance."
Promethia: She does have a point. Things can often be easier to grasp when you're feeling relaxed. What do you say?
Clarisse: Well...
Clarisse remains somewhat unconvinced.
Promethia, suddenly having an idea, flashes a mischievous grin.
Promethia: (Captain). Would you mind going on a date with Clarisse?
Promethia: I believe you just might be the change of pace she needs.
Clarisse: Mother... You're teasing me again...
Promethia: Do you object? I recall your last letter mentioned going on a date with (Captain), in a swimsuit no less.
Clarisse: Th-that's true... But I, um...
Promethia: You're being awfully wishy-washy... Very well, then.
Promethia: If you won't go on a date with (Captain)...
Promethia: That just means my chances will be that much better. What do you say, (Captain)? Will you take me on a date?
Clarisse: Whoooa! Hold it right there, Mother! Do you realize what you're even asking?
Clarisse: Father would be in tears if he heard you just now!
Promethia: Oh, I'm sure he'll get over it. I like to have fun with the young 'uns every now and then.
Promethia: I'm sorry I don't feel comfortable putting on a swimsuit at my age, (Captain). Although, I wouldn't mind linking arms with you...
Promethia: How does that sound?
Clarisse: No, no, no! Absolutely not! Because... (Captain) has a date with me!
A panicked Clarisse jumps in between her mother and the captain, the warmth of embarrassment blooming across her face.
Promethia: Haha. If you wanted to date (Captain) so badly, you should've just said so from the start.
Clarisse: Wait, you mean...
Promethia: Of course I was kidding. I have a husband. And I would never think to lay hands on someone my dearest daughter harbors special feelings for.
Clarisse: ...!
Clarisse is unable to voice anything in the heat of the situation. A blazing crimson spreads across her cheeks like a tropical sunrise.
Promethia: Well then, you two have a good time.
Promethia: Oh, and (Captain)? You have my full permission to make any advances you'd like on my daughter.
Clarisse: Mother!
Promethia: Haha, I'll be heading in now.
Clarisse: Er... That was just...
Choose: So... do you want that date?
Clarisse: ...
Clarisse: Yeah...
Clarisse nods after a moment's hesitation, her countenance exhibiting signs of glee.
Finding What Works for Me: Scene 2
(Captain) and Clarisse stop at a cafe during their date, where she reveals that her mother wants her to settle down with the captain. She is just about to confess her feelings, only to be interrupted by a cat. Though the date ends up getting cut short, the envy she feels in that moment leads to an epiphany about existential dissolution.
On the day of the date, Clarisse waits restlessly for (Captain).
Clarisse: I can probably go in my usual attire. After all, I wouldn't want the captain to think I'm trying too hard...
Clarisse: (Hrm... I hope this date goes well...)
Clarisse: (I've been way too anxious around (Captain) ever since Mother said those words to me...)
Clarisse: (What if I have trouble holding a conversation and come off as a weirdo...)
Choose: Hope you didn't wait long.
Clarisse: Ah, (Captain)—
Promethia: Clarisse, how far has your relationship with (Captain) progressed?
Her cheeks turn a familiar shade as the captain's arrival sends her mother's words ricocheting through her head.
Noticing his daughter, Harold puts on his most intimidating look and places a hand on (Captain)'s shoulder.
Harold: (Captain)... I expect you to be on your best behavior... No sudden moves...
Clarisse: Geez, Father! What a thing to even suggest!
Promethia: Exactly, dear. We want (Captain) to make a mov—
Clarisse: Stop the weird talk already! Both of you!
Clarisse: Let's not waste any more time here, (Captain)! We're gonna have a lovely date!
Eager to leave the mansion before her mother can finish her sentence, Clarisse grabs the captain's hand and rushes out the door.
The two arrive in town, the awkward silence between them gradually becoming more noticeable.
Clarisse: (Why is it so hard to think of something interesting to say...)
Clarisse: (What kind of stuff did we talk about up until now?)
Clarisse: (Ohmigosh, I forgot to let go of (Captain)'s hand earlier!)
Clarisse: (But it'd be so awkward if I let go now... P-part of me doesn't want to let go either...)
Clarisse: So, um... Where to, (Captain)? Is there any place you wanted to go?
(Captain) gives it some thought, but gestures that no, anywhere is fine.
Clarisse: Why don't we stop at a cafe to rest our legs? We've been walking for a while now.
(Captain) nods in agreement.
The two are led to a table on the terrace.
Waitress: Here's your order of our Parfait House Special. Please enjoy.
The waitress politely bows before taking her leave.
Clarisse: ...
Clarisse: (Uh-oh... I can't think of anything to say... What should we even talk about?)
Clarisse begins to show signs of distress at the discomforting silence.
Choose: You don't enjoy my company?
Clarisse: No, no, that's not it! I couldn't be happier to be with you here...
Clarisse: It's just that... No thanks to my mother, I'm probably being way too conscious of you, (Captain)...
(Captain) puts on a puzzled expression, unsure what to make of Clarisse's words.
Clarisse: Oh, you see, the other day my mother was telling me to find a partner to settle down with.
Clarisse: That's when your name came up...
Clarisse: And now I keep running scenarios of you and me being together in my head...
Clarisse: That's what I mean by being overly conscious of you... It's also why I was tongue-tied...
Choose: Glad to hear you don't hate me.
(Captain) is relieved and uplifted by Clarisse's response.
Clarisse: Sorry if I was sending you mixed signals. There's one thing I want you to keep in mind though...
Clarisse: I could never, ever hate you, (Captain)!
Clarisse: B-because I...
Clarisse: (This is going well... Here's my chance to say those words I couldn't when I was wearing that swimsuit...)
Clarisse: L—
Cat: Meow!
Clarisse: ...
Her cheeks flush a vibrant scarlet as she musters the courage to confess her feelings to the captain.
But by some inexplicable stroke of fate, a cat suddenly jumps on (Captain)'s lap.
Cat: Mrow! Merow!
It brushes up against the captain as if demanding to be pet.
Putting on a strained smile, (Captain) gently strokes the cat's fur.
Clarisse: A stray cat? It sure loves company, huh...
Waitress: Gah! How many times do I have to tell you not to bother our guests!
The waitress rushes over and tries to pull the cat off of (Captain).
However, the cat resists by digging its claws into (Captain)'s clothes, refusing to let go.
Cat: Meooow!
Clarisse: Ah, this must be the restaurant's cat? Friendly little thing, huh...
Waitress: Not quite. It's a stray that wanders around these parts.
Waitress: It hops on the lap of anyone it favors, waiting to be spoiled.
Waitress: I'll get the cat out of your hair. Just a moment, please.
Choose: Oh, I don't mind at all. Let the cat stay.
Speaking with a soft smile, (Captain) continues to pet the cat affectionately.
Waitress: Is that so? If it does become a bother, please do let me know.
The shop assistant bows apologetically and returns to her work.
Cat: Meow, meow.
The cat rubs its head firmly against (Captain) in a display of gratitude.
The captain responds by showering it with affection, as if brushing Clarisse to the wayside.
Clarisse: Mrg...
Clarisse: (I got one-upped by a cat...)
Clarisse: (I can't believe I missed my chance... Which reminds me, we were interrupted by fireworks that time with the swimsuits...)
Clarisse: (Sigh... Why is the right timing so hard to find...)
Lamenting her stroke of poor luck, she looks to (Captain) and the cat with envy in her eyes.
Clarisse: (How nice... If only (Captain) would treat me that way...)
Cat: Meorw!
Clarisse: (If I could have it my way, no one else would be around, and I'd let (Captain) pamper me all day long...)
Clarisse: (Geez, get a grip, Clarisse! Stop getting jealous over a cat! Ooh, I can already imagine Master poking fun at me if she ever finds out...)
Clarisse: (C'mon, (Captain), I'm supposed to be your date here, and I could use some attention too...)
Clarisse: (Sigh... I might as well enjoy the parfait... Nothing like a sweet dessert to cure an ailing heart...)
Clarisse, in a fit of jealousy, regret, and lament, begins to binge-eat her parfait.
Clarisse: That was good...
Clarisse eyes her empty parfait container with a rueful look.
Clarisse: (I ordered the parfait thinking we could go "aah" and feed each other like a couple in love...)
Clarisse: (Yet I finished the whole thing all by myself...)
Clarisse: (I finally get another date, and I'm just ruining it... What's wrong with me...)
Clarisse: (I'm ready to crawl into a hole right this second—)
Mireille: As far I know, you can do something very similar to existential dissolution in the highest levels of creation alchemy as well.
Mireille: You can even create a black hole that swallows up everything.
Clarisse: (If I could have it my way, no one else would be around, and I'd let (Captain) pamper me all day long...)
Clarisse: ...!
Coming to a startling realization, Clarisse leaps up from her seat.
(Captain) and the cat are taken aback by her sudden display of ebullience.
Clarisse: I just thought of something incredible! Thanks for the idea, (Captain)!
Clarisse: I, um... I hate to cut this date short, but I have a theory to test! Really sorry about this!
Clarisse: To make up for it... I'll knock your socks off on our next date! It'll be so incredible, you're gonna forget all about that cat!
(Captain) responds with a hearty smile and a thumbs-up.
Clarisse: Let's go back!
In the dead of night when everyone else is fast asleep, Clarisse is on a field close to her home, testing the idea she had come up with earlier in the day.
Clarisse: I... did it...
Clarisse: Whoo! I've actually got a handle on it now!
Witnessing the fruits of her labor, Clarisse shouts for joy and tosses herself backward to lie on the ground.
Clarisse shouts for joy before collapsing to the ground.
Her face is beaming with a full, joyful smile like never before.
Finding What Works for Me: Scene 3
Days later, Clarisse shows the results of her training in a mock battle with Mireille and Risette, claiming victory with perfect control over existential dissolution. Another attempt at confessing to (Captain) is made—but foiled by her eavesdropping parents and Cagliostro.
Days later, a recovered Cagliostro announces that her alchemy lessons will be resuming.
Clarisse: Master, I was hoping to show you something before class...
Cagliostro is curious to see Clarisse so unusually serious.
Cagliostro: Ooh, you have a surprise for me? I always welcome presents!
Clarisse: It's maybe not that kind of surprise, but... I've found a new way to use my power. And I was hoping to show you...
The others are awestruck by her show of confidence.
Cagliostro: ...
You'd better be sure about this.
You'd better be sure about this.
Clarisse: Yes! I won't repeat the same mistake! I'm sure this time!
Cagliostro: Okay then, instead of a regular class, we're gonna have you engage in a mock battle with Mireille and Risette!
Mireille: A mock battle? This could be fun!
Cagliostro: All right, show me how much you've all grown through this extracurricular activity!
Cagliostro steps into the garden and sets up a barrier to minimize any potential property damage.
Promethia: Is everyone ready?
Clarisse, Mireille, and Risette nod in unison.
Promethia: You may begin!
Mireille: Let's do this, Risette.
Risette: Yes, Mireille. I will follow your lead.
Mireille creates a doll and Risette instantly generates numerous clones from it.
Cagliostro: Not bad! That's the teamwork I like to see!
Cagliostro: Let's see how Clarisse responds!
Cagliostro turns away from the army of doll clones to focus on Clarisse.
Risette: Prepare yourself.
By Risette's command, the dolls rush toward Clarisse at once.
Clarisse: Time to show off my new technique!
With a snap of her fingers, the clones are enveloped in barriers.
Clarisse: Got you all rounded up for a group kapow!
Existential dissolution erupts within each barrier, causing the dolls to be dissolved in a moment's notice.
Vyrn: Whoa! She wiped out so many of 'em at once...
Lyria: Her power didn't leak out either! Before, Clarisse would have gone "kapow!" and destroyed everything in a massive explosion!
Cagliostro: So she's using existential dissolution within a membrane that itself is created with the same energy...
Cagliostro: Meaning that when the former meets the latter, they cancel out, preventing any leakage.
Promethia: But you would need very precise control to pull off such a feat... I didn't think Clarisse could do that...
Mireille: ...!
This isn't over yet!
This isn't over yet!
Mireille and Risette initially stand in shock at their legion of dolls being wiped out without a trace.
However, Mireille wastes no time in creating more.
The dolls merge together to form a giant one, distinct from anything Mireille had conjured up until now.
Risette then rapidly makes clones of the giant doll.
Clarisse: Aha, so that must be your trump card!
Clarisse: But I've got another trick up my sleeve too! No holding back!
A tiny force field containing the power of existential dissolution forms in Clarisse's hand.
She hurls it at the giant dolls.
Clarisse: Here's my trump card!
The fabric of reality seems to shatter like glass, opening up a large hole in space.
The hole begins to suck in everything around it, including the giant dolls.
Promethia: My goodness...
Vyrn: Gah, I'm bein' sucked in too!
Lyria: Vyrn, don't let go of me!
(Captain) rushes forward to keep Lyria and Vyrn from being sucked into the hole.
Mireille: Could this be... Eep!
Risette: Mireille, please hold onto me!
Clarisse: That should about do it.
Clarisse creates a force field around the hole and activates existential dissolution, causing it to vanish in an instant.
(Captain) and company can do little more than stand in awe at what has just transpired.
Promethia: Enough. Well, Founder? What do you think of the progress they've made?
Cagliostro: Great work from all three of you! Everyone gets a 100, smiley face included!
Mireille: Thank you.
Risette: We did well, Mireille.
Clarisse: Ehehe...
Mireille: You really surprised me back there, Clarisse. You've made so much progress with existential dissolution in such a short amount of time.
Risette: Miss Clarisse, about that hole you summoned... Was it the black hole Mireille mentioned the other day?
Clarisse: Probably! Well, I can't actually be sure... I just know it sucks up everything around it!
Risette: You're... not sure? But... did you not create that hole of your own will?
Clarisse: Well it's like, I can control it fine and understand how it works. I just... don't know what its name is?
Cagliostro: Sigh... Living up to expectations both good and bad.
Fingers to her temples, Cagliostro rolls her eyes with heartfelt exasperation.
Clarisse: Wait, Master, you know about black holes, don't you?
Clarisse: Mireille said if anyone could create one, it'd be you.
Cagliostro: Black holes? Oh, those things are on a whole nother level.
Cagliostro: Clarisse, your existential dissolution allows you to create a hole in space itself.
Cagliostro: The way it sucks things into it is similar to how water spews out of a hole in a fish tank.
Clarisse: Huh? I don't get it.
Cagliostro: Point is, you are one heck of an alchemist. You might be able to control this new power, but you'd still better be careful how you use it.
Promethia: I must say I'm impressed you figured out such a creative method of use.
Clarisse: Er, well... The truth is...
Clarisse: The idea for the first one came when I was yearning to be alone with (Captain) and be the center of attention...
Clarisse: Not exactly conventional for learning alchemy, I'll admit.
Clarisse: While the idea for the second one came when I looked at the parfait container after wolfing down its contents and remembered something Mireille said...
Clarisse: Then it was just trial and error until they clicked.
Clarisse's complexion turns a telltale shade of red as she explains in a low voice the source of her ideas.
(Captain) and company briefly remain speechless, unsure how to respond.
Promethia: So you're saying envy was the pivotal factor in all this... Well, I never would have guessed.
Clarisse: H-hey, whatever works, right?
Clarisse lets out a sigh, her cheeks still flush red. Cagliostro looks on with a wry smile.
Later that night, Clarisse calls the captain out to the garden alone.
Clarisse: Sorry to call you here out of the blue, (Captain)...
Clarisse: But there's something I have to ask you...
Clarisse: Do you have any plans for after this journey is over?
Wearing a puzzled expression, (Captain) gives the question some thought.
Clarisse: I was thinking... if you don't have anything in mind, maybe you could stay with me...
Clarisse: I mentioned it the other day, right? About me finding a partner to settle down with... Maybe you and I could...
Clarisse's Parents: Urk!
Clarisse: Huh... Mother? Father? Master too... Why... How long were you there?
Cagliostro: Sowwy! We're gonna scoot right off, so don't mind us and continue on!
Clarisse: As if I could!
Clarisse has overcome her failures and grown as an alchemist. However, she still has some growing to do in the romance department.
