Pursuit of Valor
As (Captain) and company prepare to face off against the Inchoate World, he deactivates all the Arcarum primals, then forces the replicated world to converge on him. Geisenborger and The Star fail to escape with the rest of the crew.
After overcoming numerous trials, (Captain) and company finally reach the Inchoate World.
The being that appears before them exudes a far more menacing aura than the previous time the crew confronted him.
Lecia: That's... the Inchoate World? Why does he look so different from...
Inchoate World: Your resolve has brought you far, foreign elements of the new world.
Inchoate World: And foolish Evokers and Arcarum who dare rebel against your god.
The overpowering air about the Inchoate World almost seems to take physical form.
While most in the crew flinch in response, Geisenborger steps forward with a bold and fearless grin.
Geisenborger: Bwahaha... The time for your downfall has come at last, World!
Geisenborger: I, along with the starbeast that has merged with me, have long yearned for this battlefield!
The Star: Thy wish is my prayer...
The Star: As the Chariot's right arm, I shall vanquish The World...
Inchoate World: How pitiful. The lowly beast has strayed far from the objective of its sublime maker.
Inchoate World: I will show you firsthand the difference in power between creator and created.
Inchoate World: As creator, I hereby issue a decree to the Arcarum.
Inchoate World: You shall all be disposed of. Never will you get in my way again.
The Star: ...
Geisenborger: What's wrong, Polestar? Has he done something to you?
The Star: ...
Geisenborger: What happened to your shine? It is usually insufferably bright...
The Star: ...
Geisenborger: If you're a part of my body, then answer me!
Inchoate World: Do not expect it to answer. For I have cast out the Arcarum.
Inchoate World: It can no longer move and will lose shape soon enough.
Vyrn: Wh-what's that supposed to mean!
Vyrn: What exactly did ya do!
Inchoate World: I merely discarded my creation—nothing more, nothing less. It was but a thrall before its creator.
Inchoate World: I was the one who manufactured the Arcarum out of primal beast cores that saw their end during the time of the War.
Inchoate World: It may have developed a sense of self and betrayed me, but it is by my hand that it was given life.
Inchoate World: Never underestimate your maker. The Arcarum lack the means to resist my commands.
Inchoate World: From the very outset, each of their fates rested within the palms of my hands.
Lyria: But then, that means we...
Inchoate World: Yes. All the time you've spent, bonds you've forged—it was all for naught.
Geisenborger: ...
Inchoate World: How woefully frail... You are a shame to your reputation as the Raging Chariot.
Inchoate World: What's more, I can sense your emotion when speaking of The Star. Have you not learned by now that sentimentality on the battlefield only serves to enervate you?
Inchoate World: Pathetic. I cannot bear to watch you any longer.
Geisenborger: ...
Geisenborger: Hehe...
Geisenborger: Hahaha... Mwahahaha!
Inchoate World: It appears I've struck a nerve. Have you become so petty-minded that you can no longer own up to your failures?
Geisenborger: No... I laugh at your absurdity.
Geisenborger: The Star is essentially my own flesh and blood... Thus I am experiencing the physical sensation of having my right arm severed.
Geisenborger: But it matters not...
Inchoate World: ...!
Geisenborger: I am the Raging Chariot! A severed arm alone will not stop me!
Geisenborger: And the starbeast was no doubt equally prepared for this...
Geisenborger: Nevertheless, I still have what it takes to make a trophy of your head!
Inchoate World: Your false bravado is painful to watch. Do not think your empty threats will deter me in any way.
Though Geisenborger is as defiant as ever, the Inchoate World remains unfazed.
Inchoate World: Well, I suppose you're not entirely without merit. The data you've gathered has proven to be especially valuable.
Inchoate World: I'll make sure that none of it goes to waste.
Inchoate World: Be glad that your efforts will form a cornerstone of the new world long after you have been wiped out.
The replicated world trembles violently as he utters those words.
The fabric of reality twists and bends as the world around them begins dissipating into palish particles that converge on the Inchoate World.
Vyrn: What the—
Choose: That's our cue to run!
Lyria: R-right!
Monika: Lecia, give the order to withdraw!
Lecia: On it!
Geisenborger: You wish to uproot the battlefield itself?
Geisenborger: Very well then! Have it your way, spineless coward with a name too great for your britches!
Geisenborger is the only one among the crew who continues to stand firm, shouting at the top of his lungs.
Lyria: It's dangerous to stay here, Geisenborger!
Vyrn: Time to bail, Wrench Armstrong!
Geisenborger: Hah... Where do you expect to find a battlefield that isn't fraught with danger?
As the spherical world trembles violently, Geisenborger casts his gaze at the fallen Star.
The Star: ...
Geisenborger: It is time, Polestar. Show me your resolve.
Despite (Captain)'s attempts to pull the Draph out, he marches on toward the center of the collapse.
Soon after, the bodies of both Evoker and primal transform into particles that meld with the Inchoate World.
Lyria: Oh no! Geisenborger!
Vyrn: Crud! We gotta get them back somehow!
Monika: What are you doing, (Captain)! We need to get away!
Choose: No way am I leaving them behind!
Monika: Sorry, (Captain).
Feeling a powerful impact from behind...
(Captain) slumps to the ground.
Monika: Hate me if you want, but I can't afford to lose you too.
Moments before losing consciousness...
The captain is able to make out Monika's apology.
Contending with some dizziness, (Captain) slowly gets up from bed.
Lyria: Thank goodness you're finally awake!
Vyrn: You sure had us worried, (Captain).
The captain is relieved to hear the voices of trusted companions.
Monika: This is our frontline base.
Monika: I knocked you out cold earlier and had you brought here.
Now understanding what had happened, (Captain)'s expression is one of shock.
Lecia: Um... (Captain). Please don't hold a grudge against Monika.
Lecia: She was only trying to save you.
A pained expression overtakes the captain's face.
Choose: What happened afterward?
Monika: (Captain)... Follow me.
Monika: It's faster if I show you directly.
Having come outside, the crew looks above to find a giant sphere the size of a floating island.
Monika: That showed up all of a sudden after we escaped from the replicated world.
Monika: According to the survey team's report, there's an entire world nestled within the sphere. A world never seen before.
Monika: And the sphere has been getting larger over time.
Monika: It doesn't show signs of stopping either, which means it'll only be a matter of time before...
All turn pale as they imagine the worst possible outcome.
Lyria: I can sense the Inchoate World's presence from that sphere.
Vyrn: So you're sayin' that thing's basically the Inchoate World?
Choose: Geisenborger must be in there...
Monika: Our world will be swallowed up by that thing sooner or later if we don't do something about it.
Monika: The situation's dire, but that's no reason to curl up and wait for death.
Monika: I realize you're probably still mad at me, but (Captain)... Won't you lend us your strength?
Choose: Like you even need to ask!
Lyria: I'll do what I can too! Geisenborger needs our help!
Vyrn: Definitely. Wrench Armstrong gets so caught up in the battle that he loses sight of himself sometimes...
(Captain) recalls the time Geisenborger first set foot on the ship.
Immediately after the Chariot had decided to accept The Star's power in order to defeat The World...
The crew stopped him before he could set off for battle alone again.
Geisenborger: Quite the persistent bunch, aren't you? Have I not made it clear that I have no need of comrades?
Choose: We're not gonna let you go out there alone!
Emotions heightened by (Captain)'s words, Geisenborger mutters something to himself.
Geisenborger: I have no intention of becoming your comrade, but having a base of operations will be useful...
Vyrn: Let's bring him back to the "base" before it's too late!
Monika: Thank you. We're indebted to you, (Captain).
They look up to the sphere once more.
Their resolve to save their dear friends burns bright.
Pursuit of Valor: Scene 2
Geisenborger finds himself on a battlefield that loops itself in perpetuity. It turns out to be a ploy—albeit an ineffective one—by The World to rob the Evoker of his will to fight. The Star eventually breaks free, draining some of The World's power in the process, and launches a counterattack with Geisenborger.
Geisenborger: ...!
Where am I...
Where am I...
Geisenborger finds himself standing in the middle of a battlefield with a sword in hand.
Soldier: Uryaaaah!
Geisenborger: Hrah!
Geisenborger: A blood-drenched war zone between armies...
Geisenborger: I know naught of The World's intentions, but I would not be much of a Chariot if I did not embrace this opportunity!
Geisenborger: Ararararaaaah!
With a thunderous roar, Geisenborger throws himself into the skirmish.
He tramples the battlefield, effortlessly mowing down entire waves of soldiers from both sides.
Geisenborger: Humph! This is child's play!
Geisenborger: Hm?
Geisenborger: An endless army against the peerless Chariot?
Geisenborger: How shrewd... How shrewd, how shrewd, how shrewd!
The battle has continued for a full seven days without pause.
However...
Geisenborger: Urk!
Geisenborger: Impossible... Bested... by common soldiers?
Geisenborger: (My body fails me as my organs rupture, my blood pouring out while my flesh is rent asunder...)
Geisenborger: (Yes! This is the pain of the battlefield that I've long yearned for—)
Geisenborger: ...!
Geisenborger finds himself standing in the middle of a battlefield with a sword in hand.
Geisenborger: Wha... How am I still alive?
Soldier: Uryaaaah!
Geisenborger: Hrah!
Geisenborger: The same soldiers... The same battlefield...
Geisenborger casts a rueful gaze at the cloudy skies above.
Geisenborger: A war that lasts indefinitely... This must be your doing, World!
Geisenborger: You seek to tire me out so that I lose the will to resist you!
There is no response. Geisenborger looks to the clashing soldiers before him.
Geisenborger: I could not be happier!
The Evoker opens his eyes wide, a grin fit to burst plastered on his face.
Geisenborger: I lasted seven days before... And now I'm going to survive for twenty!
Geisenborger: Heheh! Bwahahaha!
The master of this space, observing in silence, turns a cold eye at the situation.
Inchoate World: It's no wonder they call you the Mad Ravager, Deathwish Geisenborger...
Inchoate World: Nonetheless, your conclusion never changes in each run.
Inchoate World: Your dismal destiny rests within my palms. Struggle as you might, you are nothing more than a wharf rat on a wheel.
Inchoate World: An exercise in eternal futility, mired in crushing defeat. Fated to repeat this endless cycle, the ennui of mindless repetition will eventually break you.
Inchoate World: Given enough time, you will be longing for reprieve from the battlefield. Your one calling card will lose all meaning.
A year has gone by.
Geisenborger: Raah!
Hraaaaaaargh!
Hraaaaaaargh!
Soldiers: ...
Geisenborger: Urk!
Geisenborger: Guh... I'll last... longer... next time...
Defeated, slaughtered, resurrected on the battlefield—rinse and repeat.
Geisenborger repeats the process for hundreds of years. Around the three-year mark...
Geisenborger: Yaaaargh!
Inchoate World: You fool. Do you not see that your efforts bear no fruit?
Inchoate World: It's been three years in your perception of time... You've fought tirelessly without food, drink, or rest...
Inchoate World: But I see you are approaching your limits.
Geisenborger: Ngh...
Geisenborger: Huff... Huff...
Geisenborger: (I've tasted the humiliation of defeat hundreds of times by now...)
Geisenborger: (The young soldiers in their wild frenzy surround and repeatedly stab me with their swords once I am no longer able to move...)
Geisenborger: (The sensation of pain wracking my body as my flesh is sent flying in every direction...)
Geisenborger: (The blood and dirt in my mouth preventing me from uttering any last words...)
Geisenborger: (Is this the taste of defeat? If I am to die again anyhow...)
The light slowly fades away from Geisenborger's eyes.
Inchoate World: About time... Learn to submit, and become the hopeless reprobate you were meant to be.
Geisenborger: I must savor every last drop of bitter defeat that comes my way!
Inchoate World: ...!
Geisenborger: Come forward and stab me to your hearts' content, soldiers!
Inchoate World: You don't know when to give up... You're really prepared to fight for an eternity, aren't you...
Geisenborger: Compared to the time I was bereft of all sensation and could not feel anything...
Geisenborger: The bitter sweetness of defeat couldn't be more enticing!
Inchoate World: ...
Inchoate World: How unexpected... Is this man truly a mortal?
The Star: I would expect no less from the Chariot.
Inchoate World: ...!
Inchoate World: ...
I recall disposing of you.
I recall disposing of you.
The Star: I bided my time, waiting for thou—the master of this "world"—to show weakness.
Inchoate World: So you took advantage of that single moment, I see. But no matter; I can simply dispose of you again.
The Star: Water leaking from a vase doth not easily return to the container.
The Star: Thy rule hast already concluded.
The Star: Shatter!
The Star swings his fists, causing a whirlpool to form out of thin air.
Inchoate World: What in the...
Geisenborger: Heheh... You made me wait hundreds of years to see you again when you were right there all along, eh, World...
Inchoate World: You can see me... Has the beast taken your power?
Geisenborger: As I've mentioned before, the polestar is a part of my body.
Geisenborger: Maintaining my ego over the course of centuries was easy enough as long as I continued to fight.
The Star: Indeed.
Inchoate World: You persisted for all that time simply to see me shaken?
Geisenborger: Your underhanded tactics turned out to be a blessing in disguise for me, World.
Geisenborger: Every sensation felt on the battlefield—including all that accompanies defeat and death—is nothing but the most supreme pleasure to me.
Inchoate World: Urk!
The Star: Now, Chariot... Let us destroy The World in unison.
Geisenborger: Don't get ahead of yourself, Polestar. Remember that you're little more than my arm.
The Star: Yes, that is fine.
The Inchoate World recoils in surprise as Evoker and primal stand side by side.
Geisenborger: I do not tire of battle, but this scenery has long grown dreary.
Geisenborger: Chances are the young skyfarer awaits my return anyhow.
The Star: If it is (Captain) thou alludest to, I must concur.
Geisenborger: Humph. It's time we destroyed this false dimension and returned to reality.
Geisenborger: That airship is my base of operations after all!
Inchoate World: What's that light...
Pursuit of Valor: Scene 3
Having absorbed some of the Inchoate World's power, Geisenborger finds himself covered in his old suit of armor. The World, finding that his plans are at risk, ejects the Evoker and primal outside the spherical world, where they reunite with the crew aboard the Grandcypher.
Geisenborger: Ah! How nostalgic this armor is!
Inchoate World: What's with the new look? What did you do?
The Star: The World did delve deep into the Chariot's psyche to form this dimension.
The Star: Breaking free hath allowed the Chariot to soak up some of that power.
Geisenborger: Oho... Means The World picked up on my desire to don this armor again.
Inchoate World: You, my measly creation, used my power to approach the realm of your god?
Geisenborger: Mwahaha, what a sad little "world" you are, to be cornered by your own power!
Inchoate World: Oh, I am far from cornered. Surely through your eternity of defeat, you've noticed the vast difference in might between us.
Inchoate World: The likes of you could never put a dent in me!
Geisenborger: Is that what you think?
Geisenborger: Let's try something.
In the next instant, Geisenborger smashes his fist into the ground.
A chunk of the ground is sent flying, causing a spatial distortion.
Geisenborger: Your move, Polestar!
The Star: Ready.
The Star: Crash!
Inchoate World: What is the meaning of this?
Geisenborger: Doesn't seem like our fists can reach you directly. Figured we'd wreck the battlefield instead!
Inchoate World: ...?
Geisenborger: Gaha, I can practically hear the dimension wailing in pain!
Geisenborger: Haah!
In a furious waltz, Geisenborger and The Star ravage the dimensional space of their surroundings.
Geisenborger: Hehe... Ahahahahaha!
Geisenborger: This armor imbues me with the mad rage I once displayed on the battlefield!
Geisenborger: I destroy before I am destroyed! I kill before I am killed! I wreck every obstacle in my path!
Inchoate World: Your foolishness knows no bounds! Destroy this space, and you'll end up hurting yourselves as well—
Geisenborger: Hahah! Don't tell me you've forgotten my moniker—one that struck fear in the hearts of people.
Inchoate World: ...!
Inchoate World: Deathwish... Geisenborger...
Geisenborger: Who's the fool now, you witless "world"!
Inchoate World: Tsk! I've underestimated the Chariot!
Inchoate World: But no matter... I'll exterminate you lot from here.
The Inchoate World manifests a schism beneath the ground that Geisenborger and The Star stand on.
The pair are ejected out of this spherical world and plunged into the skies.
They rapidly fall upside down.
The Star: Chariot... We shall surely reach the depths at this rate...
As the captain's voice rings out, the shadow of the Grandcypher comes into view below.
The Grandcypher safely catches the two mid-fall.
Geisenborger: Hahaha! To think I'd end up in the base again.
Vyrn: This is no laughin' matter! You got any idea how worried we were?
Lyria: Yeah, exactly! So, um, have you been okay?
Geisenborger: I'm still in one piece as you can see. I even scored a suit of armor—
Geisenborger: Wait... Where did my armor go?
Vyrn: What armor? That's your usual garb you've got on.
Geisenborger: I survived through countless bloodbaths in that armor! It is my pride and joy! Where did it go?
Geisenborger: Ah!
Geisenborger: Forgive me... I lost my calm.
Lyria: ...
The Star: The Chariot's armor of choice seemeth to manifest only within the spherical world...
Geisenborger: I see...
Finally having a chance to relax, the Evoker and primal describe the events that had transpired within the sphere.
The crew, seeing the sphere expanding above them, explains that the Sky Realm is in danger as well.
Lyria: It's been getting bigger and bigger even after you two got out...
Geisenborger: I understand the situation... It's time to go.
Vyrn: Hey, wait a sec! Go where?
Geisenborger: Is it not obvious? We must infiltrate the sphere once more and crush The World into oblivion.
Lyria: B-but Monika suggested we stay away because it's dangerous...
Geisenborger: The polestar and I can handle it. Because we've absorbed some of that wretch's power, we can interfere with the sphere.
Geisenborger puts on a fearless grin and turns his back to the crew.
Not intent on letting him go alone, (Captain) makes to reach out—
Geisenborger: Hope you guys don't mind coming along.
However, Geisenborger turns around first and extends a hand.
Geisenborger: We should be able to expand the area of interference just enough for the lot of us to enter.
Vyrn: Am I dreamin'? Did Wrench Armstrong actually just ask for our help?
Lyria: Ahaha... I'm a bit surprised myself.
Geisenborger: Come now... I realize it's unlike me, but must you act so startled?
Vyrn: 'Course you made our jaws drop, Armstrong! You're always chargin' into the battlefield alone!
Geisenborger: That's because you lot are as persistent as a swarm of flies...
Geisenborger: I charged ahead in the earlier battle because I did not wish to involve you in a personal matter.
Geisenborger: It was not until later that I realized I may have caused you unnecessary worry...
The Star: Yes... I could sense thy concern in my bones, Chariot—
Geisenborger: S-silence, starbeast!
The Draph abashedly turns away from (Captain) and brushes his nose.
Geisenborger: Let us make haste, youngsters! Make sure you do not get in my way!
Flashing a wry grin, (Captain) takes Geisenborger's hand.
Determined to defeat The World once and for all, the crew sets out on another trip to the sphere.
Pursuit of Valor: Scene 4
The crew reenters the sphere to stop the Inchoate World once and for all. He sees the appearance of the crew as a trial to be overcome before world creation can happen and awaits their arrival at the center of the sphere.
The crew steps inside the floating sphere to settle matters with the Inchoate World.
Vyrn: Whoa... What's with this place...
Lyria: The many different colors mixed together is making my eyes go round...
The wild color scheme is extremely unsettling, violently distorting the captain's perceptions.
Geisenborger: Polestar... I have no need of a shield. Use the power newly acquired from The World to keep the young ones safe.
The Star: But if something should befall thee...
Geisenborger: The concern is unwarranted. I'll be fine.
The Star: Very well...
Lyria: Ah! I feel much better!
Vyrn: Thanks a bunch, Wrench Armstrong!
Geisenborger: Glad to hear it! As for myself, simply donning this armor makes my blood boil with excitement!
Lyria: Speaking of... Is that the same suit of armor you mentioned earlier, Geisenborger?
Geisenborger: Yes... It kept me safe over many long years in my youth.
Geisenborger: It seems to manifest only while we are within the sphere.
Geisenborger: Mwahaha! Fuel for the Chariot will never run dry as long as my trusty armor is on me!
Vyrn: Uh... Wrench? You're lookin' kinda scary there...
Geisenborger: Perhaps I spoke out of turn. Let us bury The World before he has time to cook up another scheme.
Lyria: R-right... Let's hurry!
Bracing themselves for what may come, the crew proceed onward to the center of the multicolored world.
Inchoate World: You lot again.
Vyrn: Gwah! You got us good last time, and now we're gonna get payback!
Inchoate World: What more could you want from me? I have no more business with you. You nuisances are a waste of time—
Inchoate World: No, wait... I see how it is. Defeating your group is the final trial I must overcome before the new world comes to fruition.
Geisenborger: Humph... We care not what you think.
Inchoate World: A birth becomes that much more meaningful after successful completion of a trial. And a trial exists to be overcome...
Inchoate World: Very well then. I welcome you all to be the final sacrifices to mark the true completion of my task.
The Inchoate World seems to disappear, blending into his multicolored surroundings.
Geisenborger: Where did you run off to! Fight me, you coward!
Vyrn: Whoa... Let's take it down a notch, Armstrong! I'm pretty sure he's just waitin' ahead for us!
Geisenborger: But...
The Star: Calm thyself, Chariot. Do not mistake recklessness for valor.
Geisenborger: Bwahaha! What sort of warrior would I be if I did not thirst for battle while wearing this battle-hardened armor, friend!
Choose: Let's all take a deep breath.
Geisenborger: Ngh...
Geisenborger: I suppose bellyaching like an overgrown child would do us no favors...
Geisenborger: The armor makes it rather difficult for me to contain myself.
The Star: ...
The crew's march toward the center of the sphere continues.
