Guardian of the South-Southeast

The crew visits the Snake Temple, where the workaholic temple keeper Indala heals (Captain)'s aches and pains with a gentle touch. After later using the poison from her hands to reform a disruptive visitor, she asks to join the crew's journey in search of more job opportunities, and they happily welcome her aboard.

A recent influx of requests has left the crew feeling utterly exhausted in both body and mind.
Amidst their fatigue, they hear word of the Snake Temple, where people gather to pray for improved health and success in their work.
Inspired by the promise of such blessings, they decide to pay a visit to the temple themselves.
Vyrn: Should've known it'd be packed this time of year. There are so many people, I can't even see the main hall.
Lyria: I'm pretty sure we'll reach it if we just keep following this path...
Temple Elder: Why, hello. Is this your first time at the Snake Temple?
Lyria: Oh! Yes, it is. Is the main hall up ahead?
Temple Elder: That's right. Today is particularly busy, so take care not to get separated.
Vyrn: Oh yeah? Is there some kinda special event goin' on?
Temple Elder: Indala is here making an appearance. She's the keeper of this temple.
Temple Elder: The opportunity to receive her blessing directly has drawn a larger crowd. Would you like to participate as well?
Vyrn: Sounds good to me! I wanna know more about that keeper anyway, so let's go check it out!
Following the guidance of the temple staff, (Captain) and company join the line further down the path.
Eventually, they are shown into a building adjacent to the worship hall.
There they find a woman clad in a white kimono, exuding a composed and dignified aura.
???: Hello. I don't recall seeing you here before.
Indala: I am Indala, keeper of the Snake Temple. You all seem quite young—have you come for a blessing to aid in your work too?
(Captain) and the crew introduce themselves, explaining that they've been swamped with requests lately.
Indala: I see. You certainly take your job seriously. But if you push yourself to the point of illness, it will undermine all your efforts.
Indala: Tell me, is there a particular part of your body where you're experiencing discomfort?
  1. My head.
  2. My back.
  3. My legs.

Choose: My head.

Indala: Your head, is it? Then allow me...
Indala gracefully extends a slender hand and places it on (Captain)'s head.
Indala: Hm? Why do you look so shocked?

Choose: My back.

Indala: Your back, is it? Then allow me...
Indala gracefully extends a slender hand and places it on (Captain)'s back.
Indala: Hm? Why do you look so surprised?

Choose: My legs.

Indala: Your legs, is it? Then allow me...
Indala gracefully extends a slender hand and places it on (Captain)'s leg.
Indala: Hm? Why do you look so confused?

Vyrn: I mean, anybody'd react like that if somebody started puttin' hands on 'em outta the blue.
Indala: Out of the blue? Ah, so you didn't know.
Indala: By touching the affected area, I can relieve mild symptoms. I wasn't doing it for fun.
Lyria: Oh, so that's what that was. It startled me too.
Indala: Hmm, what to do... Considering the number of visitors, I normally only allow one touch per person.
Indala: But it was partially my fault for assuming you were aware. As a special exception, I can do it one more time if you'd like.
The captain politely declines, ensuring her that any aches and pains have already diminished.
Indala: That's good to hear. I wish you all continued success in your endeavors.
After thanking Indala, (Captain) and the crew make their way out.
They spend the next half hour perusing the temple.
Vyrn: Think we covered most of the Snake Temple. Got great luck on those fortune slips we pulled too!
Lyria: I guess we should be leaving soon... Oh?
On their way back from drawing their fortune, (Captain) and the crew spot a familiar figure on the grounds.
Indala: ...
Vyrn: Hey, isn't that the gal from earlier? What's she doin' out here?
Lyria: It looks like she's sweeping...
Indala: Hm? Ah, it's you again. Heading home?
Vyrn: Yeah, we pretty much saw everything. But what's with the broom? Don'tcha have keeper stuff to do?
Indala: The last visitor has already left, so I'm cleaning up now.
Lyria: I'm sure things must be too busy to allow for much of a break. But you need to take care of yourself—
Temple Elder: There you are, Indala! Working again, I see!
Temple Elder: How many times must I tell you to take a break!
Vyrn: Is she gettin' a lecture? But why?
Lyria: I-I'm not sure...
Indala: I slept a week ago. That was more than enough.
Temple Elder: Yes, yes. I'm well aware that's how you're wired.
Temple Elder: You don't have to sleep, but at least take some time to rest! Otherwise you'll end up working yourself to death!
Indala: It hasn't killed me before. I'll be fine.
Temple Elder: It'd be too late if it had!
Vyrn: Uh... Sounds like things are gettin' kinda heated...
Temple Elder: Ah, you there! Could I have your ear for a moment?
Lyria: O-okay!
Temple Elder: The Snake Temple was once renowned for its blessings related to healing, good health, fertility, and safe childbirth.
Temple Elder: Historically, visitors used to flock here to pray for such wellness-centered graces.
Vyrn: "Used to," meanin' that's changed now?
Temple Elder: Correct. Ever since people began receiving Indala's blessings, there has been a shift toward those seeking good fortune in their jobs.
Temple Elder: Given Lady Indala's dedication to her own work, she was quite enthusiastic about this development.
Temple Elder: Now, the majority of visitors come to pray for success in their careers.
Indala: I see that as a positive. A fulfilling job leads to a fulfilling life.
Temple Elder: On that point, I agree. What concerns me is your incurable addiction to work!
Temple Elder: Even after finishing your tasks, you repeatedly ask for more instead of resting.
Temple Elder: I'm worried about your health! Plus, your refusal to take breaks makes it difficult for the rest of us to take them too!
Indala: Urk... Well, er...
Temple Elder: Now, Indala—please get some rest! I'll handle the sweeping!
With that, the woman takes the broom from Indala and swiftly walks away.
Indala: Ah, my work...
Indala: Now I have nothing to do.
Vyrn: Then why don'tcha just relax like she said?
Indala: I can't stand being idle. You see, whenever that happens...
Indala: Urgh, it's getting cold...
Vyrn: Really? I mean, sure it's chilly, but it's been like that for a while.
Indala: Er... Forgive me for asking, but could you possibly lend me a hand?
Lyria: You need our help with something? Sure, you can count on us!
Indala: All right. In that case...
Indala reaches out to take (Captain)'s hand with her right hand and Lyria's with her left.
Lyria: Wha! I-Indala?
Indala: Ahh, your hands are so warm. I thought as much when we first met, and it seems I was right.
Indala: I feel much calmer now. Thank you.
Lyria: Um... Why are you holding our hands?
Indala: I can "see" heat. Warm spots appear red, while cold spots are more blue—that sort of thing.
Indala: Your hands had such a warm, comforting color that I couldn't resist holding them.
Indala: It's a bit hard to describe... but whenever I have nothing to do, it feels like I'm being left behind.
Indala: The idea of the world moving on without me fills me with loneliness, and I end up shivering, craving the warmth of another.
Indala: Hence why I asked you to lend me a hand.
Vyrn: So you meant that literally? Talk about confusing...
Lyria: Ahaha... You really caught us off guard.
Vyrn: So how long are ya plannin' to hold on?
Indala: Hm? Oh, I just wanted to enjoy your flustered reactions for a little while longer.
With a mischievous glint in her eye, Indala releases their hands.
Indala: But this is quite the predicament. If I keep idling away my time, the same thing is bound to happen again...
Vyrn: Then how 'bout we hang around and chat for a while? We've still got time to spare.
Indala: Are you sure?
Lyria: Of course! We'd love to learn more about you, Indala!
At Vyrn's suggestion, they move indoors and find a spot to chat.
Vyrn: Sounded like that old lady was really layin' into ya earlier.
Vyrn: You're the head of this temple, right? Didn't that bother you?
Indala: No, not at all.
Indala: I'm not fond of excessive politeness. I find it much more comfortable when people are honest and upfront with me.
Vyrn: Well, I guess you make the rules...
???: Such incidents are routine here. There's no need for concern.
Vyrn: Whoa! You can talk?
Indala: Ah, you're finally awake? Great, let me introduce you.
Indala: This is Shiro, my precious companion.
Shiro: Pleased to make your acquaintance. Yaaawn...
Lyria: You seem pretty sleepy.
Shiro: I was up all night assisting my master with her work. To be quite frank, I'm sleep-deprived.
Shiro: It's truly a mystery to me how she keeps this up for twelve days at a time.
Lyria: Now that you mention it, I remember her saying something about sleeping a week ago...
Shiro: My master prioritizes efficiency to the extent that she's reduced her need for sleep. She can now stay awake for twelve consecutive days.
Vyrn: No way! So that wasn't a joke?
Indala: If it were, I'd have to question my sense of humor. I like to think I'm a bit funnier than that.
Vyrn: What's she gettin' all bent outta shape for?
Elder's Voice: I'm terribly sorry, but as I've said several times, visiting hours are over for today.
Visitor's Voice: Are you telling me to leave? I didn't travel all this way to be treated like this!
Indala: Hm? I hear voices outside.
Vyrn: Let's go take a look.
Stepping outside the break room, they see the elderly staff member attempting to reason with a visibly angry man.
Temple Elder: I understand, but the rules apply to everyone.
Indala: What's all the commotion?
Temple Elder: Ah, Indala! This gentleman insists on receiving a blessing from you personally.
Temple Elder: I was just explaining to him that it's already past visiting hours...
Temple Visitor: "Indala"? So you're the one who runs this place?
Temple Visitor: Perfect! You can give me my blessing now!
Indala: A work request? Normally, I'd be more than willing to oblige, but in this case...
Indala: I'm sorry, but rules are rules. It would be unfair to the other visitors.
Temple Visitor: What! You're already here, so just do it!
Temple Elder: Apologies, but that's our final decision. We'll have to ask you to leave for today—
Temple Visitor: Nobody asked you!
Temple Elder: Eep!
In a fit of rage, the man sends the woman sprawling to the ground with a shove.
Indala: ...!
Are you all right?
Temple Elder: Y-yes... Thank you, Indala.
Indala: ...
Indala: Do you desire my touch that badly? Very well. I will grant you a blessing.
Temple Visitor: Finally! You should've just done that from the start!
Indala approaches the man and places a hand on his cheek.
Temple Visitor: Heh! Got my blessing!
Temple Visitor: Wait... Huh?
The man suddenly drops to his knees as though all strength has left him.
Temple Visitor: What's... happening? My whole body... feels numb...
Indala: It's poison. I infused it from my hand directly into your skin.
Temple Visitor: Poison? B-but why...
Indala: Because your conduct was unacceptable. Without treatment, you'll die.
Temple Visitor: No! H-help me... Please!
Indala: Will you repent for your thoughtless behavior?
Temple Visitor: Y-yes, I will!
Indala: ...
I'm counting on your sincerity.
As Indala touches his cheek once more, the numbness slowly fades from his body.
Temple Visitor: I'm saved... Th-thank you so much...
Indala: By the way, you never mentioned the reason you wanted a blessing. Why were you so insistent on getting one?
Temple Visitor: I'm a failure at work... I keep getting fired from every job I take. And I just got desperate...
Indala: I see.
With a nod, she gently pats the man's head.
Temple Visitor: Er...
Indala: Relax. I didn't use any poison this time.
Indala: You were probably just looking for someone to show you a bit of kindness.
Indala: I'm not sure of the mechanism, but I've been told my touch upon a person's head leads them to have pleasant dreams.
Indala: May your dreams remain vivid, always.
Temple Visitor: R-right! I'll start fresh and do my very best!
Indala: That's what I like to hear.
Uplifted by Indala's encouragement, the man departs with a bright smile on his face.
Vyrn: Bein' a temple keeper's no walk in the park, huh? But you handled that like a pro!
Indala: I'm sorry you had to witness that.
Lyria: No need to apologize. But you mentioned earlier about poison coming from your hand, right?
Lyria: Does that mean we might be affected since you held our hands too?
Indala: Don't worry. My hands don't always emit that toxin—I can control it at will.
Indala: The effect of a poison depends on how it's used. When weakened and managed carefully, it can even act as medicine.
Indala: That's why I can cure minor ailments with my touch.
Vyrn: Dang, that's a pretty handy talent. You could be a doctor!
Indala: It's not quite that convenient, I'm afraid. I don't have a deep understanding of medicine or anatomy.
Indala: When it comes to healing, my skills are fairly half-baked.
  1. That's not true.

Choose: That's not true.

Vyrn: (Captain)'s been lookin' better ever since you worked your magic!
Indala: Hehe. I'm glad to hear that.
Vyrn: Whoops, we've been here way longer than we planned.
Vyrn: There's a huge backlog of requests waitin' for us, so we'd better head back!
Indala: A huge backlog? Y-you're that busy?
Indala: I'm so jealous...
Vyrn: Huh? What's got you so fidgety?
Indala: Oh, it's nothing... Ahem. Nothing at all.
Lyria: See you again someday, Indala!
Indala: Yes, someday.
Indala: ...
Indala continues to gaze intently at the crew's retreating figures until they vanish from sight.
Vyrn: All right! We got our blessing, so let's get this show back on the road!
Lyria: Yeah!
Indala: Yes, let's go.
Vyrn: Wait, what! Why're you here?
Indala: I figured journeying with you would open up all sorts of new job opportunities. And you could use the extra hands, right?
Lyria: What about your temple duties?
Indala: Most of my tasks can be done on the ship, like calligraphy for the stamps that visitors are given.
Indala: I usually travel to other islands looking for work on my days off anyway, so there shouldn't be any issue.
Indala: Would it be all right if I came along?
  1. Welcome aboard.
  2. We'll make sure you stay busy.

Choose: Welcome aboard.

Indala: Thank you. I'm happy to be here.
Go to "Continue 2"

Choose: We'll make sure you stay busy.

Indala: That sounds magnificent. Feel free to assign me any and all tasks you need done.
Vyrn: You sure love workin', huh? Dunno if I should be impressed or scared...

Indala: I can't wait to see what sort of jobs await me. Hehe...
Seeing Indala's eyes sparkle with excitement, the crew feels a thrill of anticipation for the journey ahead.
