The Man of a Thousand Blades

Rakan and Raphael begin to fight. However, Raphael calls it off once he realizes Rakan is being careful not to harm his vegetable field. Rakan, fired up by his encounter with the farmer, heads into Sazak excited by who he might meet next.

Amidst the rising smoke and swaying carrot stalks, he sees the silhouette of a single man.
Raphael: A... mortal?
Rakan: Hehe, soft as a feather.
Rakan: ...
Hmm?
The moment Rakan and Raphael match gazes, each senses the other's formidable strength.
Rakan: (This guy's not bad...)
Raphael: (A storm born of might...)
Raphael: That impact just now. I take it that was your doing?
Rakan: Yeah, my bad. Guess it's pretty late, huh? Did I wake you up?
Raphael: No, I was up examining my vegetable field.
Rakan: Vegetables? Why's a powerhouse like you messing around with the whole farming shtick?
Raphael: Whyever not? A field teaches us of life in its many forms. How fleeting it is, and how wondrous.
Raphael: I would like to taste the vegetables grown by your hand.
Rakan: Huh? I ain't much one for riddles. You see...
Rakan gives Raphael another evaluating look before crossing his arms and grinning.
Rakan: I'm feeling pretty bored. Wanna play?
Raphael: ...
Raphael: If that is what the wind wills.
Rakan: Are you seriously just a farmer? You've got no openings—I'm getting fired up!
Rakan: (But... I guess a Rakan Impact is outta the question, huh?)
Raphael: Simeon Sickle Rush.
Rakan: Oh? Now that's a pleasant breeze.
Raphael: Such tenacity. Like a great, unbending tree. My assessment of you was right.
Rakan: (Well, if a Rakan Impact is no good, then...)
Rakan: How about this! Rakan Ten-Thousand Raging Fists!
Raphael: An ultrafast flurry of punches... It's as unavoidable as rain in a tempest!
Raphael: Yet... both wind and rain are on my side.
Rakan: Oh? So you can eat that and remain standing, eh?
Rakan: Now that's what I'm talking about! Good things do come to those who hurry. Taking that skydive was totally worth it.
Raphael: Good things? No, more importantly—was that thunderous noise earlier you softening your landing?
Rakan: You got it. Ain't nothing in the world that can't be done with a little elbow grease.
Raphael: Elbow grease... That harmonizes well with the wind. Why did you come to this field?
Rakan: Wasn't aiming for this place in particular. Just wanted a strong opponent to fight. I told you I had some time to kill, didn't I?
Raphael: So you say. Yet, I felt as though you were holding back in our exchange. Why?
Rakan: Hmm? Oh. Well, I'd tear up your precious field if I went all out here.
Rakan: Don't sweat it though. I'm plenty strong even without my finishing moves.
Raphael: ...
Raphael: No, we shall end it there. If harming the field was not your purpose, then I have even less reason to fight you.
Rakan: Aw, but it was just getting good!
Rakan: You're crazy strong. You should try going pro in the fighting or merc business. I guarantee you'd make a killing.
Raphael: And I would advise you to take up a plow the next time you are bored. Your strength would make the tilling light work.
Rakan: Haha! I'll think about it.
Rakan: Catch you 'round, freaky-strong farmer guy. I'm gonna go see if there ain't someone around here who can top you.
Rakan departs, taking care to step around the vegetables as he leaves.
Rakan: (If that's how strong they make mere farmers 'round these parts, then maybe...)
Rakan: (Hehe, I can't wait to see who's next!)
An eager fighting spirit kindles in the grinning Rakan's chest as he thinks of who he might next encounter in Sazak.
Raphael: May the winds bless your path ahead.

The Man of a Thousand Blades: Scene 2

Rakan runs into Gabriel and Michael, the former of whom asks him to model for her. When she asks how she can thank him, he unleashes his Secret Art: Silent Flip Technique on the archangels' garments. An enraged Michael dispenses punishment on him, but after the fight, Rakan is still left unsatisfied. After he parts ways with them, he collapses on the side of the road.

The next morning finds Rakan striding through Sazak, on the lookout for a strong opponent.
Rakan: Now... if I were a strong son of a gun, where would I be?
Intimidated by the violent glint in his eyes, other pedestrians quietly keep their distance.
Rakan: That farmer got my hopes up, but...
Rakan: Everyone 'round here looks like a gloomy sad sack.
Elsewhere in town, two women are in the midst of a conversation.
Michael: So you're searching for someone to model for you?
Gabriel: Yes, that's the idea. The theme of the next open art exhibition is a "muscular person."
Gabriel: Do you know anyone? You often have soldiers and such clamoring for your favor, don't you?
Michael: I... can't deny that, but I'm not particularly well acquainted with any of—
Rakan: Hum-hum-hmhm-lala...
Gabriel: Th-that's it!
Gabriel: Those roughly hewn, yet naturally rugged pectorals... He's the perfect model!
Gabriel: I knew I could count on you, Michael! You lure buff guys in at the drop of a hat!
Michael: Wait, Gabriel. I have a bad feeling about this.
Despite Michael's wariness, Gabriel immediately runs over to Rakan.
Gabriel: Hello? Yes, you—the gentleman there. Would you do me the honor of modeling for me?
Rakan: Modeling?
Rakan: Wahaha! You want to paint the untamed beauty of this body of mine?
Rakan: Sure thing! Then, shall I...
Rakan: Strip?
Gabriel: Oh, no, that's fine. You just have to pose for a bit.
Rakan: Hmm. Like... this?
Rakan strikes a confident pose.
Gabriel: Perfect! It's like you stepped right out of my mind!
Michael: ...
Must have been my imagination.
Gabriel spends a while sketching her new model before placing her brush down, satisfied.
Gabriel: Thank you. You were exactly what I was looking for.
Rakan: Hey, it was fun for me too. Not every day a modeling gig comes along.
Gabriel: Oh, right, I must show you my appreciation. Is there anything I can do for you?
Rakan: Appreciation, huh? Hmm...
Rakan: Secret Art: Silent Flip Technique!
Michael & Gabriel: Wha—
In one flowing movement, Rakan flips up the hems of Gabriel's mantle and Michael's waistcloth.
Rakan: Aw, man, that wasn't even worth it. If only you two had been wearing skirts.
Michael: You... You shameless scoundrel!
Gabriel: Wh-why don't you take a deep breath, Michael? It was just a little prank, right?
Rakan: Hehe. Yeah, for the record, I was holding back.
Michael: Unforgivable! Steel yourself, cad!
Rakan: Whoa!
Rakan: (This aura... She's like that farmer I ran into.)
Rakan: Well, this is a nice surprise! Gimme everything you got, all right?
Gabriel: I don't think I can talk her out of this... but I can at least keep the bystanders at a safe distance.
Rakan: Heh. Not bad. It was definitely worth picking a fight with you.
Gabriel: Ooh! I knew his muscles were something special!
Michael: Gabriel! Whose side are you on!
Gabriel: Why, yours, of course.
Rakan: Whoa! What's with the waterworks? It's sapping... my strength...
Gabriel: Now, Michael!
Michael: Enjoy the rest of your life as charcoal, perverted fool!
Rakan: Whoa-ho!
Rakan: Nice one! You actually managed to deal me some punishment. I might fall for you at this rate.
Michael: What I'm hearing is that you're asking for another scorching.
Rakan: Haha! I guess we'll call it a draw, yeah?
Gabriel: A draw... Who are you, exactly?
Rakan: Jack Rakan. The man who became a legend.
Gabriel: Is that so? Well, I'd like you to model for me again sometime, if you don't mind.
Rakan: Hey, no problem. Thanks for the fun time.
Rakan departs, leaving Michael and Gabriel behind to watch him as he goes.
A short time later, Rakan staggers into an empty alleyway before sinking to his knees.
Rakan: What a riot. Why's a random painter and her buddy so strong?
Rakan: Still, don't think I've had enough yet.
Rakan: Ugh...
Despite his own words, Rakan collapses by the roadside.
Rakan: Hehe. There are still so many strong opponents out there to meet...
Concerned Child: Oh, no! There's a really big man out cold on the ground!
Helpful Child: I'll go call for help!
Concerned Child: Hey, are you okay, mister? Get it together!
Rakan: ...
???: Someone's hurt, right? Where is he?
A large man in a cook's attire arrives on the scene.
???: Okay, leave this to me, guys. Let's get him to my place first.
The last thing Rakan feels before he passes out is being lifted up and carried by a strong pair of hands.

The Man of a Thousand Blades: Scene 3

Rakan is rescued by Uriel, who feeds him a hearty stew. To show his gratitude, he agrees to Uriel's request for a friendly bout. Rakan realizes the reason he's so eager to fight is because he was annoyed at himself at not being able to rescue Nagi alone. His thoughts now clear, he returns to the Grandcypher satisfied as Uriel sees him off with a smile.

Uriel's Kitchen: a cozy little restaurant run by the archangel Uriel.
Rakan awakens on the sofa, his nose tickled by a mild, yet delicious scent.
Rakan: Where am I?
???: Finally awake, huh?
Rakan: Now there's an unfamiliar mug...
???: Haha, feisty one, aren't ya? I'm the guy who carried you here after finding you collapsed on the roadside.
Uriel: Welcome to Uriel's Kitchen.
Rakan: Uriel's Kitchen?
Uriel: You've gotta be hungry, yeah? Here, eat some of this.
Uriel loads a bowl full of piping hot stew and holds it out.
Rakan digs in immediately, and his mouth is soon bursting with gentle, creamy flavor.
Rakan: ...!
Rakan: This might just be the best damn thing I've ever chowed down on. Especially the carrots.
Uriel: Hehe, it just soaks into your body, doesn't it? Got the carrots from a pal of mine—he put his heart and soul into growin' 'em.
Uriel: That aside, you feeling okay? You're pretty beat-up.
Rakan: I'm better after eating this. Feels like I got a second round on life.
Rakan: Sorry for the trouble. Anything I can do to thank you?
Uriel: Well, I'd like to say I don't need any gratitude, but...
Rakan: Heh. Didn't figure you'd be the one picking a fight with me.
Uriel: I find just as much joy in a good fight as I do in cooking.
Uriel: And I can tell you're strong. Right?
Rakan: You could say that.
Uriel: I like that look on your face. Still, you're injured.
Rakan: That's got—
Uriel: Nothing to do with it? I figured you'd say that, but I'm the kinda guy who likes playing fair.
Uriel rears back his arm and slams a single mighty punch into his own stomach.
Uriel: Now we're even. Sound good?
Rakan: Friend... You're my kind of guy.
Uriel: I won't hold back, so you better not either!
Rakan: First things first!
Uriel: Heh! I knew you were nothing to sneeze at!
Rakan: Whoa! So fistfights are your forte too, huh?
Rakan: (All right, how should I do this?)

Rakan: Let's take the secret outta that secret flower garden of yours!
Rakan: Secret Art: Silent Flip Technique!
In one flowing movement, Rakan flips up the hem of Uriel's waistcloth.
Uriel: Huh? What's that supposed to achieve?
Rakan: Yeah, you're right to be confused. I got no interest in whatever you're wearin' under there.
Rakan: But... I bought the time I needed.
While Uriel was distracted by the Silent Flip Technique, Rakan had stored power in his fist.
Uriel: Crap!
Rakan: That was fun, but this is curtains, Mr. Chef.
Rakan: Raaarrrggghhh!
Uriel: Haaahhh!
Rakan: Rakan Impaaact!
Uriel: Uryaaah!
Nagi: Jack...
Nagi: Hey, Jack...
Nagi: This makes it 498 to 499.
Rakan: You better not die on me, kid. We haven't settled the score yet.
Nagi: Right back at you, Jack.
Rakan stands motionless amidst the billowing cloud of dust.
Rakan: Nagi...
Rakan: That's right... I...
Rakan: I was pissed off that you got toyed with and I couldn't do squat to help you on my own.
Rakan: That's why I went around swaggering and getting into brawls. I wanted to get stronger.
Rakan: Heheh. No wonder I wanted a good fight, huh?
As Rakan makes peace with his inner thoughts, Uriel watches him with a smile.
Uriel: Looks like you worked through what was bothering you. I'm glad.
Rakan: Uriel! Don't tell me you planned this from the start?
Uriel: Oh, I don't know what you're talking about. I just wanted a good fight.
Uriel: Come back whenever you'd like. Whether it's food or a throwdown you want, you're always welcome.
The pair exchange a firm handshake before parting ways.
Rakan: That was a good fight. Still...
Rakan: To think even the farmers, painters, and cooks of this world are so strong...
Rakan: You can never tell what life's got around the corner, huh?
Rakan: I've got a long way to go. I gotta get stronger.
Rakan: Once Nagi's healed...
Rakan: Well, it's been a long while since we fought. Might be a good idea.
Satisfied with his time in Sazak, Rakan returns to the Grandcypher with the renewed will to train, forever chasing the path of strength.
