Crushing Weight of Reality

When saved by Eahta, Jin realizes this gentleman is the very same one who saved him when he was but a child. The brief discourse between the two reveals that Eahta fought merely for the sake of a good challenge, not to save anyone. This revelation makes Jin question his path in life.

The crew comes to a town to exterminate monsters as part of an assignment.
An alpha monster and its pack are growing more violent by the day, and have recently been seen closer and closer to town.
Immediately upon arrival, the crew runs into a horde of monsters ravaging the fields.
Jin: Hraah!
Monster: Gwooogh...
Jin: Whew... That should be the last of them.
  1. Tuckered out yet?
  2. Splendid work.

Choose: Tuckered out yet?

Jin: Not in the least. I will never tire of helping people.

Choose: Splendid work.

Jin: Haha, it humbles me to receive such praise from you, (Captain).

Any version of Jin is a crew member

Jin wields his blade to do good, believing wholeheartedly that helping others is the true path of righteousness.
Ever since a master swordsman saved him from a monster attack at a young age, Jin has roamed the land, aspiring to follow that swordsman's example.
Jin's impetus for joining the crew was the successful resolution of an incident revolving around a primal beast on a certain island.
Vyrn: I sure wasn't expectin' the welcome wagon to be a bunch of monsters though.
Lyria: They did say the monsters were becoming more savage, but I had no idea they were coming this close to town...
Jin: Half of these fields are ruined. If we leave the situation untended, the people living here could be targeted next...
Jin: Something's coming!
Alpha Monster: Groaar!
Jin braces for a battle against a monster considerably fiercer than the ones before.
Jin: The uncanny presence it gives off suggests it may be the leader of them all.
Jin: This will not be an easy battle. We must get into forma—
Alpha Monster: Gwaaargh!
Jin: Rgh!
Lyria: Jin!
Jin: Do not fret!
Jin: Lyria, Vyrn, I suggest you make a run for it! (Captain) and I shall deal with the monster!
Jin: Hyaah!
Alpha Monster: Gyaargh!
Jin: Urgh, its flesh is as solid as a rock! My blade will not pierce through!
Alpha Monster: Gwooaar!
Jin: Urgh! Oh no...
The alpha monster pounces on Jin as he loses balance. (Captain) leaps to his aid.
However...
Alpha Monster: Gaoorgh!
???: ...
Jin: ...
Jin lies speechless before the large figure who felled the monster with a single slash.
Vyrn: Jin! You okay?
Jin: Yes... 'Tis but a scratch.
While the others are breathing a sigh of relief, Jin's eyes are fixed on the broad back of his savior.
He recalls the incident from his childhood.
Jin: (What an impressive display of swordsmanship that was... And that unmistakable silhouette... )
Jin: (There's no question... This is the very same man!)
Jin: Sir! If you would be so kind as to tell me your name!
???: ...?
Jin: Ah, my apologies! I should be thanking you first!
Jin: My name is Jin. And I am most grateful to you for your assistance back there.
Jin: That's twice you've saved my life.
???: Twice?
Jin: When I was but a child, a gentleman saved me from a similar plight...
Jin: And after seeing your handiwork with a sword just now...
Jin: I am convinced you are that very same gentleman.
???: ...
Jin: Since the day you delivered me from the clutches of that monster, I've vowed to use my blade to save people, as you do.
Jin: My admiration for you has made me what I am today. Although there were times when I wavered...
Jin: Meeting (Captain) set me back on the right track.
Jin: I've wanted to thank you for the longest time. You will forever be my savior... and the ideal that I aspire to.
Jin pours out the zealous thoughts that have come to define his very being all these years.
The swordsman, however, seems nonplussed.
Eahta is a crew member

???: Sensing great strength, I descended from the ship looking for a decent battle... But perhaps I expected too much.
Jin: A decent battle?
Did you not fight to protect the townspeople?
???: One's perception of morality, and by extension the larger world, is often clouded by a predisposed view of all matters in life.
???: Perhaps it is time to reevaluate what it is you truly seek.
Jin: What... does that even mean?
???: ...
Without so much as a response, he quietly returns to the Grandcypher.

Eahta not in crew

???: Hearing rumors of this so-called alpha monster, I came here looking for a decent battle... But perhaps I expected too much.

Jin: ...
Lyria: Ahaha... What an Eahta thing to say...
Jin: So his name is Eahta?
Vyrn: Yep. If you ask me, Katana Grandpa could've at least introduced himself.
Vyrn: I wouldn't sweat it though! He's not exactly the most sociable person, but I can tell he wasn't angry either.
Lyria: Eahta travels around in search of strong opponents to do battle with to improve himself.
Vyrn: That's probably why he came out—not to save our hides, but 'cause he figured the monster would be a real toughie.
Vyrn: You know he's the real deal when he's so focused on his training that he forgets his own name!
Lyria: Eahta's not a bad person though; he can be really kind! He just gets misunderstood a lot since he doesn't talk much...
Jin: I see...
Jin: ...
Having completed the assignment, Jin accompanies the others back to the Grandcypher, feeling dismayed the whole while.
Jin stands on the Grandcypher's deck that night, reflecting on his two encounters with Eahta.
Jin: ...
Jin: (I've lived my life trying to be like that gentleman, helping people wherever and whenever I can...)
Jin: (But it was never his intention to save me, he said...)
Jin: (I just happened to be saved, while he sought out what he wanted...)
Jin: (The sublimity I saw in him... was a fabrication of my own creation... A phantom...)
Jin: (Was the path that I had found for myself nothing more than a pipe dream?)
Jin feels as if he's just had the rug pulled out from under him, and has been chasing a phantom for far too long.
Unsure of where to take his life next, Jin now faces a moral quandary.
