Super Cutest

When Manamel proves unable to care for herself adequately, (Captain) and the others decide to accompany her on her shopping trip. Kolulu tells Manamel that she admires her fashion sense very much, but Manamel brushes it off, saying that "cute" is something that simply requires a bit of effort.

One day, (Captain) and company meet a girl named Manamel who is looking for her long-lost older sister.
Manamel ends up joining the crew until she is able to find a means to repair her dagger, Vegalta.
The morning after their encounter, (Captain) and the others head to the room Manamel is staying in.
Lyria: Do you think Manamel's awake?
Vyrn: Either way, we should check up on her just in case.
Vyrn: Remember last night? She couldn't even tuck herself in...
Lyria: Right... She would've probably caught a cold if (Captain) hadn't dropped by her room.
Vyrn: I don't know how she's got so much confidence when she can't do a single thing by herself. It's actually impressive.
The crew talk among themselves as they make their way down the hallway. Suddenly, they hear a voice.
Manamel: Oh em geeee!
Lyria: Eep! Was that... Manamel?
They run to Manamel's room and throw open the door.
Manamel: ...!
The crew finds Manamel on the floor, tangled up in her clothes and unable to move.
Manamel: Oh, (Captain)... Morning.
  1. G-good morning...

Choose: G-good morning...

Lyria: Wh-what happened? Did you fall off from the bed?
Manamel: Of course not. I just had a little trouble with my clothes, that's all.
Vyrn: By little, you mean a lot! How'd you even get like that?
Manamel: I never expected it to be this hard... I put them on fine last night.
Manamel: Anyway, if I keep rolling on the floor like this, my clothes are gonna get dirty! That'd be so not cute!
(Captain) closes his eyes and does his best to free Manamel from the tangle of clothing.
Manamel then instructs the captain to bring over the cosmetics she needs to fix her makeup for the morning.
Manamel: There. Cute as a buttercup.
Vyrn: Whew... It sure is a lotta work lookin' after ya.
Manamel: Hm? Well, you asked for it. (Captain)'s the one who said I should come with you guys.
Though the crew didn't exactly ask for it, they remain quiet, not wanting to darken Manamel's mood.
Manamel: Anyway, I'm gonna go out to town. I want to get some new accessories with the money from yesterday's job.
Lyria: Oh, wait! Will you be going by yourself?
Manamel: Yep.
Worried, the others look at one another before nodding.
Vyrn: Then we'll go with you. We don't have any urgent requests to take care of right now anyway.
Manamel: Oh, okay. Whatever you want.
Manamel: Guess we should get going then...
Lyria: Oh. Um... Are you feeling hungry?
Manamel: I forgot to eat. Vegalta usually cooks and brings me my food, so.
Vyrn: That dagger can even cook?
Lyria: Ahaha... Why don't we have something to eat before we go shopping?
Vyrn: Huh? Wait, did you hear someone else's stomach growling... from the hallway?
Kolulu: U-um, if you don't mind... can I join you for breakfast?
A hungry Kolulu pokes her head out from behind the door, looking embarrassed.
(Captain) and company go out to town with Manamel and Kolulu and decide to have breakfast at a cafe.
Kolulu: Aaah! Eggs, sausages, toast... This really hits the spot in the morning!
Vyrn: Haha. Glad to see that appetite's as humungo as ever.
Manamel: ...
Little Girl: Mom, look! That person looks just like a doll! She's so cute!
Girl's Mother: Oh my, she certainly is!
Lyria: Hehe, did you hear that? The mother and daughter over there think you're cute, Manamel!
Manamel: Seems like it.
Vyrn: Wha? That's it? Thought you'd be a bit happier than that after spendin' all that effort dressing up.
Manamel: I'm not really dressing up for other people to compliment me, so.
Lyria: You said you want to look cute when you see your sister again, right?
Vyrn: Why're you so fixated on lookin' "cute" though? There's probably a ton of other ways to impress your sister.
Manamel: Well... That's because...
Little Girl: I can't believe how cute she is... Maybe she'll look this way...
Manamel: ...!
Little Girl: Yay! Mom, she waved at me!
Girl's Mother: Aww, isn't that nice, sweetie?
Kolulu: Hehe. You're really nice, Manamel.
Manamel: I mean, it's pretty normal to be nice to kids.
Manamel returns to her meal, a cool expression on her face. Kolulu looks at her timidly.
Kolulu: Um, actually... I also think you're incredibly vogue and refined.
Kolulu: How do I put this... Let's just say... pigs will fly before I even come close to that echelon of fashion.
Manamel: ...
Manamel: Kolulu, have you ever thought about giving yourself a glow-up?
Kolulu: Huh?
Manamel: Have you ever tried getting some makeup and clothes, or accessories?
Kolulu: Gasp! No way, dressing up wouldn't suit me in the least!

Kolulu (Summer) is a crew member

Kolulu: I mean, I've gone to the beach before in a swimsuit, but I didn't pick that out myself...

Continue 1

Kolulu: But, as embarassed as I am to say, I do find myself drawn to glamour.
Manamel: Look. If you're interested, try it.
Manamel: Being cute really isn't that hard. It doesn't take a miracle to change your look.
Kolulu: ...!
Manamel calmly picks up her tea cup.
Manamel: Ouch! Why did the tea just spill itself?
Vyrn: Cause you spilled it! Seriously, how do you live like this?
Kolulu: ...
Kolulu: Um... Manamel, would it be okay if I tagged along on your shopping trip today?
Manamel: Sure, why not.
With a nonchalant nod, Manamel pours herself another cup of tea.
The tea misses the cup, landing in her plate of salad.

Super Cutest: Scene 2

The crew visits an accessory shop, where Kolulu tries on a bracelet she likes. Suddenly, two ladies interrupt and tell Kolulu that the bracelet doesn't suit her at all. To everyone's surprise, Manamel steps in to admonish the ladies, who apologize for their attitude. With her new bracelet, Kolulu follows Manamel on her shopping trip and makes many new discoveries.

After leaving the cafe, the crew follows Manamel to an alley where an accessories shop is located.
Manamel: Well, I'm gonna be up on the second floor. I'll see you all later.
Vyrn: You sure you should be wandering off by yourself? I got a bad feeling...
Manamel: I've been to this shop a couple of times. Besides, I like browsing on my own.
Manamel: You guys can look around with Kolulu in the meantime.
Manamel doesn't wait for a reply before striding to the back of the store.
Lyria: Wow! There're so many sparkly items!
Kolulu: Ooh! Everything's so shiny...
Kolulu gingerly tiptoes around the store, looking at the dazzling objects surrounding her.
Kolulu: Hm?
Her wandering gaze stops on a certain bracelet.
Kolulu: (I-it's beautiful! So cute and... grown-up.)
Lyria: Hehe. Do you like the bracelet? You should try it on!
Kolulu: O-okay!
She nervously reaches out for the bracelet and slips it onto her wrist, unable to take her eyes off of the glimmering ornament.
Kolulu: Wow... It feels very refined!
Kolulu: B-but I still think... it might be a bit too soon for me...
Rude Customer 1: Hah, At least you're self-aware. You're not good enough for that bracelet, Frumpy.
Kolulu: ...!
Rude Customer 2: Just so you know, we're regulars at this store and we saw it first. So could you hand it over?
Two ladies suddenly appear, looking down at Kolulu with mocking smiles on their faces.
Vyrn: No way we're handin' it over! And there's no reason to be rude like that!
Rude Customer 1: Hello? We're doing you a favor. Something as gorgeous as that would only make you look more like a potato.
Rude Customer 2: Exactly. And I'd hate to match with someone like you, so could you take a hint and get out of here? Thanks.
Kolulu: Hnngh...
Unable to bear the slander, (Captain) takes a step forward toward the two strangers when a voice cuts them off.
Manamel: You're in my way. I want to look at the things on that shelf.
Kolulu: M-Manamel...
Rude Customer 1: What? Who are you? Can't you tell we're in the middle of something here?
Manamel: Well I'm in the middle of something too—shopping.
Rude Customer 2: Excuse me? Ugh, look at all that makeup. Who asked a preppy wannabe like you?
Lyria: That's mean! Manamel's—
Manamel: It's all right. It's true that I put on a lot of makeup.
Manamel: I really load on the eyeshadow, and I use cool-toned foundation and a lot of highlighter to make my skin look this way.
Rude Customer 2: Wh-wha? So you're actually admitting it?
Manamel: Yes. I'm made up of everything I think is cute.
Manamel: I don't care what other people think about me, as long as my sister-boo likes it.
Rude Customer 1: Wh-what's that supposed to mean?
The women recoil at Manamel's composed words.
Manamel: The both of you are dressed exactly how the magazines tell you to dress.
Manamel: This bracelet's something a magazine model wore, right?
Rude Customer 2: Yeah, so what? Are you trying to say that we're too basic?
Manamel: No. I think it's great you put so much effort into fashion.
Manamel: But, when you look into a mirror, deep down, do you really like what you see?
The Two: ...!
Manamel: She—Kolulu picked up this bracelet because she actually thought it was cute.
Rude Customer 1: Y-yeah, so? Doesn't mean a thing if it doesn't suit her.
Manamel: Fashion isn't about what suits you.
Manamel: The things you like will always make you cuter.
Kolulu: Manamel...
The other customers shrink away from Manamel, overwhelmed by her intensity.
Rude Customer 1: Wh-what the heck! I can't believe... you're actually kind of right...
Rude Customer 2: Dang it... Why am I suddenly thinking back to the day I first tried on my mom's lipstick?
The two look at each other before turning back to Kolulu and Manamel.
The Two: I'm sorry!
Rude Customer 1: We'd forgotten the most important thing about dressing up.
Rude Customer 2: Yeah... I'm sorry I said all those terrible things. I mean it.
Manamel and Kolulu accept the women's apologies, and the incident comes to a close.
Kolulu: Thank you for earlier, Manamel!
Manamel: Don't worry about it. I just wanted to see what was on the shelf.
Vyrn: Haha. You say that, but you didn't even glance at the shelf.
Manamel: Whatever, lizard.
Vyrn: What!
Kolulu: But... I feel bad that they bought me the bracelet as an apology. Maybe I shouldn't have accepted it...
Manamel: Of course you should've. Being cute is all about desire. You take what you can get.
Kolulu studies the bracelet glittering on her wrist.
Kolulu: Heheh. I'll be sure to wear this on special occasions. I'll treasure it!
After that, the crew continues following Manamel on her shopping trip as she buys cosmetics and other fashion and beauty items.
Kolulu is close behind Manamel, admiring the whole new world around her.

Super Cutest: Scene 3

On their way back to the ship, Manamel tells the others about her past. She once had an older sister who took care of her while her parents were busy with their religious activities, but her sister—a priestess for the group—disappeared when the religion dissolved. Meanwhile at another location, Lavirita—a member of Navis—meets with a woman calling herself Nereus. Lavirita wonders why Navis has not yet made a move on Nereus and Manamel, who both possess Horoscopes and are clearly Accordants.

On their way back to the Grandcypher, the crew are met with a rain shower and hurriedly search for temporary cover.
Manamel: Oh em gee, I can't believe it's raining... My hair's ruined.
Lyria: Oh no... It's never nice when you work hard to set your hair, only for it to get wet.
Manamel: No, I mean the rain's going to make the dye in my hair run. I'm gonna have black streaks on my clothes.
Vyrn: Oof, that's not good... Now I see why you hate the rain so much.
Manamel: Right. Besides, the rain...
Manamel trails off mid-sentence and hops onto a different train of thought.
Manamel: Hey. You guys said you wanted to know why I'm so fixated on being cute, right?
Manamel: I guess I can tell you while we wait for the rain to die down.
Looking down at the ground, Manamel begins to tell her story.
It starts with her early childhood, back when she still lived with her sister...
Manamel: My mom and dad belonged to the Aquatic Acolytes and were never home.
Manamel: But I didn't really care. I had my older sister.
Manamel: All my earliest memories center around her—taking care of me. Loving me.
Manamel: My sister-boo was also an Aquatic Acolyte and left for their congregations at sunrise. But she always came back in the evenings.
Manamel: Then she'd cook for us, play with me, and gently tuck me into bed.
Manamel: "You're so cute, Manamel."
Those encouraging words from her were my world—my everything.
Manamel: My sister-boo warned me against going out. So afternoons, I'd stay in my room, studying up on how to be cute.
Manamel: I'd look forward to showing her what I'd learned that day when she came home.
Manamel: But then, gradually... my sister-boo started coming home later and later. Strange tattoos started appearing all over her body.
Manamel: Finally, one humid and rainy day, my world collapsed.
Manamel: Mom and Dad came home all of a sudden, soaking wet from the rain. Then, they hung themselves right in front of me.
Manamel: Turned out the Aquatic Acolytes were gone, and along with them, my parents' will to live.
Manamel: But whatever. The only thing I cared about was whether my sister-boo, who'd gone to the congregation that day, was okay.
Manamel: I was dying to know. But I didn't want to disobey my sister-boo, so I forced myself to wait at home.
Manamel: Days passed, and she still wasn't back. The rain outside was never-ending.
Manamel: I finally finished the food my sister-boo had made for me before she left. Tears continued to run down my cheeks as I savored the last bite.
Manamel: My sister-boo was my world. She was my goddess. If she was gone from these skies, then I'd have no reason to be here either...
Manamel: But... the moment I thought that, Vegalta suddenly appeared before me.
Manamel: And for some reason, I felt it was my sister-boo telling me to find her, and to use the dagger to fight.
Manamel: I looked up someone connected to the Aquatic Acolytes and asked him about my sister-boo.
Manamel: That's when I was told that "the priestess had gone on a journey."
Manamel: That's how I started my own journey, and now here I am.
Manamel: To me, what my sister-boo thinks is "cute" is my everything. That's why I'm gonna do whatever it takes to maintain my cuteness.
Manamel: Anyway... I guess it's no fun listening to all this.
  1. Thanks for sharing your story with us.

Choose: Thanks for sharing your story with us.

Manamel: Huh?
Lyria: Yes, thank you. This might sound a little strange, but I'm happy you told us.
Vyrn: You said your sister's your entire world, but hey, now we're here. You can always depend on us too.
Kolulu: That's right. We'll do our best to help you find your sister!
Manamel: ...!
Manamel's jaw drops as she stares at the crew, speechless.
She raises her head to look up at the dark clouds in the sky and whispers.
Manamel: I hope... my sister-boo's staying nice and dry.
Priestess: ...
A figure stands in a barren field, pelted by the rain.
Priestess: I've been waiting.
Lavirita: My task is complete. I have seen to it that Manamel encounters (Captain) by way of a job request.
Priestess: You certainly live up to your reputation. You have my thanks.
Lavirita: ...
Lavirita: I must admit that it was a rather strange request from you, but the compensation was appealing enough.
Lavirita: Who are you really?
Priestess: ...
Lavirita: I understand it is prohibited to pry into the details of clients. However, I also have an agreement with the group I work for.
Lavirita: If there is nothing you can tell me, may I at least have your name?
Priestess: The observer peers into the telescope and makes various speculations on who I am—a primal beast, or perhaps a dragon.
Lavirita: I apologize for my ignorance, but who may this "observer" you are referring to be?
Priestess: The observer is not specific. It is one and many.
Lavirita: I fail to see your point. How, then, shall I call you?
Nereus: You may call me... Nereus.
Nereus: That would be the most appropriate.
Lavirita: ...
There's something about the woman that makes the back of Lavirita's neck prickle. But he remains just polite enough, as befitting a merchant.
Lavirita: Speaking of which, Nereus, is the progress with the Horoscope Vegalta your doing as well?
Nereus: The observer would not wish for that to be disclosed at such an obscure location.
Lavirita: I can only assume your answer to be a confession.
Nereus: ...
Lavirita: (It is obvious that this person and Manamel are both Accordants. Why is Navis choosing to neglect them?)
Lavirita: (What could the constellation's final destination be?)
As Lavirita thinks to himself, Nereus holds out a bag.
Nereus: Here is the compensation for your services, as promised. It should be more than what was agreed upon in the contract.
Lavirita: Your munificence is appreciated, but the amount in the contract will be enough for me. A personal policy, if you will.
Nereus nods and adjusts the amount before handing over the bag.
Nereus: We shall cross paths again—before your gun meets its fate.
Lavirita: Yes. I look forward to your patronage.
Nereus: ...
When Nereus waves her staff, an image appears before her.
Nereus: The passionate and strong-willed Ariete...
Nereus: This, too, must be a part of the fate of the skies.
Nereus: O Nereus Staff, mock the absent god.
She disappears from the field, leaving only the sound of rain in her absence.

Super Cutest: Scene 4

That night, Manamel informs (Captain) that she will be leaving since Vegalta has recovered. (Captain) tries to stop her, telling the girl that the crew wants to support her in searching for her sister. Hearing the captain's thoughts, Manamel decides to continue journeying with the crew, and slowly begins to allow other people into her life for the very first time.

That same night, (Captain) walks with Manamel to a nearby hill to talk.
Worried that Manamel might trip along the way, the captain eventually piggybacks the girl.
Manamel: We're here! Now that the rain clouds are gone, we can see the stars clearly.
(Captain) puts Manamel down, and the two stand beside each other, gazing up into the starry sky.
Manamel: I just wanted to tell you that Vega's all good now.
Vegalta: ...
Manamel: I would've been fine walking by myself, but for some reason, I didn't want to tell you yet.
  1. When did Vegalta get better?

Choose: When did Vegalta get better?

Manamel: It was back to normal when we got back from our shopping trip.
Manamel: Vega and I share the same destiny. But there're a lot of things I still don't get.
Manamel: Over the course of my journey, I did find out that Vega is something called a "Horoscope."
Her eyes still fixated on the sky, Manamel lifts her arms up into a big stretch.
Manamel: Now that Vega's all better... I guess it's time to say goodbye to you and everyone in the crew.
Manamel: It was kinda nice. Not being by myself for a bit.
Manamel: My sister-boo's always been my everything. This was the first time in my life... that I've ever allowed other people in.
Manamel: Well, bye then. I'm gonna leave while it's still night.
Manamel turns and begins to walk by herself, back the way they came.
  1. Wait!

Choose: Wait!

Manamel: Hm?
  1. You should stay with us.

Choose: You should stay with us.

(Captain) tells Manamel the crew can help her look for her sister.
Manamel: Right... That's what Kolulu said in the afternoon too.
Manamel: But I can't stay. I'm desperate to find my sister-boo. I'd do anything.
Manamel: I know I'm selfish, so it's only right that I work alone. Even if I joined a crew, I might just leave one day without telling anyone.
  1. That's fine.

Choose: That's fine.

Manamel: ...!
The captain tells Manamel that whatever the reason, if she decides to leave someday, the crew won't stop her.
However, until then, (Captain) and company just can't abandon someone they know could use their help.
Manamel: Wh-what the heck! You're not making sense... not a teensy-weensy bit!
Manamel: Ugh. Oh em gee.
When Manamel turns away, the captain adds that she doesn't have to accept the offer if she doesn't want to.
Manamel: ...
Manamel: All right.
Manamel: I'll come with you guys. It's probably the best option for finding more information on my sister-boo.
Manamel: But once things get up and running for me, I might leave at any given time.
Manamel: Just so we're clear, okay?
(Captain) smiles and nods, welcoming her into the crew.
Manamel: Seriously...
Manamel: Well, you're gonna have to take responsibility for showing up in my world like this all of a sudden.
Manamel: If I end up in hot water on your watch, Vega's gonna be mad, no cap.
Vegalta hovers in front of the captain, swinging vigorously. (Captain) chuckles.
The stars shine above them, as if watching over their gradual journey down a path still shrouded in mystery.
The next day, the crew are spending some time together when Manamel approaches them.
Manamel: Hey, (Captain). What do you think of people with heavy makeup on?
Vyrn: Huh? I thought you didn't care what other people thought.
Manamel: Of course I don't. I don't care about other people... but I kind of want to know what (Captain) thinks.
Manamel: So? Are you gonna give me an answer or what?
Vegalta: ...
From that day on, Manamel makes a habit of going to (Captain) at every opportunity for the captain's advice.
And eventually, even when no such opportunity presents itself, Manamel finds herself lingering around (Captain).
Manamel: Perfect. I'm still looking my super cutest today.
Manamel: Hehe. Hehehe.
