Grandma and Me
Wasting no time, Octavia begins cooking up a giant meal. She assaults the crew's stomachs with a slew of dishes, causing even Vyrn and Lyria to lay down their utensils in defeat. Seeing Octavia's forlorn look, (Captain) reenters the battle, chopsticks in hand—anything to protect her smile.
Some time after the Blue Knight's investiture ceremony, Octavia the Green Knight suddenly appears at the steps of the Grandcypher.
After declaring her intent to become the crew's grandma...
Octavia finds herself in the Grandcypher's kitchen, hastily preparing supper with the movements of an experienced chef.
Vyrn: And here I was wonderin' why she went straight to the kitchen.
Lyria: Sniff... It already smells so good.
Octavia: Haha, I suppose it's a bit too early to be eating supper. We'll just have a light snack instead.
Octavia opens one of the wrapped bundles she had brought and unloads a mountain of treats atop a giant plate.
Vyrn: Kinako sticks, brown sugar candy, dried squid, and sour kelp... That's a pretty old-fashioned lineup of snacks.
Lyria: Thank you, Octavia! I can't wait to try everything!
Octavia: How about some green tea to go along? Be sure to chew well before swallowing.
As (Captain) and the others peacefully munch on the snacks before them, Octavia reveals another bundle.
Octavia: I've come bearing gifts as well. Please, go ahead and open them.
Lyria: Wow! Thank you so much!
Vyrn: Ya didn't have to do all that for us! Way to go above and beyond...
Octavia: I am, after all, a grandma. It's the least I could do.
Octavia: In any case, that's enough dillydallying. I'd like to show off my craftsmanship.
The three excitedly unwrap the first present, but are met with a confusing sight.
Vyrn: Is this... a sword? Looks kinda weird though.
Octavia: Heh heh heh... Press the button on the right while giving the hilt a solid twist.
Lyria: That's amazing! The sword lit up everywhere, then turned into a gun!
Octavia: Now grab the hilt again and rotate the blade downward until... Yes, that's it. Keep going until you hear a click...
Vyrn: It lit up and turned into an axe this time! The heck even is this?
Octavia: A deluxe, triple-function device with lights and sound effects! I call it the Super Clockwork Blade: Yugiri!
Octavia: It's one of the clockwork weapons I made. These are popular with the children, no?
Octavia: You would be hard-pressed to find a child who dislikes drills, beams, and transformations, after all.
Octavia: I'm currently developing a combined mechanical claymore—the Clockwork Gun: Aoi.
Octavia: Anyway, be careful with it. It has a few durability issues, what with how many moving parts there are...
Choose: I get the appeal, but...
Vyrn: It's not very useful...
Octavia: Anyway, be careful with it. It has a few durability issues, what with how many moving parts there are...

Vyrn: So it breaks easily, huh? Sounds like a lousy weapon, if you ask me.
Octavia: That won't be a problem. You simply have to defeat your enemy before it malfunctions!
Ignoring the dumbfounded looks directed at her, Octavia pulls out yet another bundle and places it on the table.
Octavia: Feel free to don these gowns tonight. It's expected to be quite chilly.
Lyria: Wow! Wool socks and... Uh, this is...
Octavia: A girdle! It'll keep your belly warm while you sleep.
Octavia: I've also brought woolen trousers, as well as these gilets. I've made enough for everybody here.
Lyria: This vest... has Vyrn's face embroidered on it!
Vyrn: The socks and girdle fit perfectly too... How'd you know our sizes?
Octavia: One look is all I needed to tell. I have plenty of experience, you see.
Octavia: I tailored for a whole family, and the children were constantly growing.
Octavia: I frequently had to make them new outfits, which is why I can tell a person's size from just a glance.
Lyria: Octavia... You're such a nice grandma.
Octavia: Hehe, stop it. It's just that I have a desire to care for cute little children.
Octavia: Now then... I know it's still early, but I'll get started with supper. Look forward to it!
Lyria: Mmm! This is delicious! The Overlord Squid is so juicy, and the pumpkin is melting in my mouth!
Octavia: The pumpkin and Overlord Squid complement each other well when trimmed and simmered together for an adequate amount of time.
Vyrn: This fish and veggie stew is pretty good too. So sweet and savory!
Octavia: That's because I took great care when preparing the radish. Have you noticed the complete lack of a fishy scent?
Octavia: Go ahead, (Captain). You eat up as well. I simmered the wrasse in bonito soup for a while.
Octavia: Too much salt is bad for you, after all. But when the broth is packed with flavor, it tastes good nonetheless!
(Captain) tries a piece of the wrasse and is immediately hit by a wave of savory juices.
Although all the dishes were steamed piles of brown, (Captain), Lyria, and Vyrn thoroughly enjoy the food.
Octavia: All right, I hope you're still hungry! It's a growing child's job to eat well!
Everybody: Okaaay!
Sure thing!
Sure thing!
And so, the three continue to feast on Octavia's cooking until...
Octavia: Next up—simmered prawn and chicken breast. Both of these dishes are quite rich, making them perfect to eat with a side of rice!
Vyrn: H-hey... Wait... Burp...
Octavia: With that said... Ta-da! I've prepared plenty of food, so eat to your hearts' content!
Lyria: I-I'm sorry, but... we can't eat another bite...
Vyrn: Even Lyria's stuffed...
Octavia: My goodness... There's no need to hold back. You're all so young. I'm sure you could eat some more, no?
Lyria: Oh, um... It's not that we're holding back. We really are full...
Octavia: Did I make too many oil-heavy dishes? In that case, I'll whip up a light one to close out. How about salmun rice with tea?
Vyrn: No thank you! We've had enough! More than enough, actually!
Octavia: Is that so... I see children these days don't eat very much...
Looking at Octavia's downcast face, (Captain) fights off the nausea and picks the pair of chopsticks back up—anything to protect that smile.
Octavia: Oh my! So you are still hungry! Ah, to be young again! Here, you can have my share as well!
Moved by (Captain)'s act of courage, Vyrn and Lyria exchange a few whispers.
Vyrn: Hey, Octavia's sure been makin' a lot of assumptions about kids...
Vyrn: Not everybody's a fan of transformin' weapons, and it's not like they're hungry all the time...
Lyria: Maybe children two thousand years ago were actually like that...
Grandma and Me: Scene 2
The following day, Octavia visits the Grandcypher once more, only to find an unwell (Captain) huddling in bed. She immediately begins treating the captain with an all-inclusive regimen, but (Captain) remains ill the next morning. Suddenly, the crew receives news that a nearby village had been attacked by bandits.
The next day, after a near-death experience with Octavia's unfathomable amounts of home-cooked food...
Octavia: Now then, what would you like to eat today? Grandma will make you whatever you want!
Octavia: I have some quality machuzaka beef and greatshrooms on me. Perhaps a rice bowl would be best.
Vyrn: I mean, that sounds good and all, but (Captain) isn't doin' so great...
Feeling unwell, (Captain) lies still in bed, clearly not in a state to eat.
Octavia: Oh my, you poor thing... Did you catch a cold?
Octavia brushes her bangs aside, then presses her forehead up against the captain's.
Octavia: You don't seem to have a fever. What might be the cause of your malaise?
Vyrn: Well, it's probably—
(Captain) hastily covers Vyrn's mouth with a single swift movement.
Octavia: Hm? It appears you already know the reason.
Octavia: I don't intend to force you to speak, though. My primary concern at the moment is your recovery.
Octavia: Let Grandma take good care of you. Worry not—you'll be fit as a fiddle in no time at all!
And so, (Captain) is left in the care of Octavia under her rehabilitation regimen.
Octavia: Now then, say "aaah"! You won't get better on an empty stomach.
Octavia: This is sour plum porridge. It should be easy for you to digest.
Octavia: Okay, let's get you stripped down, (Captain)! I don't want to see a single article of clothing on you!
Octavia: You've been sweating, no? Grandma will wipe your whole body down for you.
Octavia: All right. It's time for you little ones to go to bed. I'll warm you up so you can sleep through the night.
Vyrn: C'mon, (Captain). You're a renowned skyfarer, yet you're gettin' coddled like some kinda baby...
Before the break of dawn, (Captain), still feeling unwell, decides to take some medicine.
Octavia: ...
The following morning, the crew receives an urgent request.
The messenger explains that a nearby village had been attacked by bandits and is in dire need of help.
Octavia: You're still feeling under the weather—aren't you, (Captain)?
Octavia: Leave this to Grandma. The rest of you stay here too!
Vyrn & Lyria: Thanks!
O-okay!
O-okay!
Wishing to protect Lyria, Vyrn, and the still bedridden (Captain), Octavia leaps to action.
Befitting her title as a Luminary Knight, the Erune makes quick work of the bandits. However...
Bandit Chief: Take this!
Octavia: ...!
Lyria & Vyrn: Octavia!
Octavia: And here I assumed you were merely a group of backwater nobodies... I'm surprised there's even a single noteworthy soul among you.
Unbothered by her severed arm, Octavia stares at the bandit chief with a look of intrigue and raises an eyebrow.
Grandma and Me: Scene 3
Octavia successfully repels the bandits, albeit at the cost of her arm. Realizing that (Captain)'s malaise was caused by her home cooking, she explains that her reckless actions were meant as an apology. However, the captain tells her not to worry and asks her to continue making food for the crew, causing Octavia to tear up.
Octavia: That swordsmanship... You used to be an instructor somewhere, didn't you?
Bandit Chief: And so what if I was?
Octavia: How unfortunate...
Octavia: Were I a proper swordswoman, perhaps you could've put up a better fight.
Bandit Chief: Mrgh!
The sudden noise catches the bandit's attention, causing him to turn around.
Bandit Chief: Wh-what!
The shocked bandit chief is met with the sight of Octavia's severed arm crawling toward him.
Octavia: Limit Break: Kagero.
Bandit Chief: Gah!
Before the bandit can so much as react, he finds himself on the receiving end of a powerful strike.
Octavia: Sorry about that. I'm actually a mechanic. Traditional duels were never my forte.
Octavia: Remotely operating my mechanical limbs, on the other hand... That's child's play.
Octavia: Finding alternative combat styles—like the "Kagero" from earlier—is my specialty.
Kagero—a technique that removes the limits normally imposed on Octavia's mechanical limbs.
Upon activation, her physical capabilities are significantly heightened for a short span. However...
Octavia: Grk...
Its use comes at a steep cost. After completely exhausting the body, it causes every muscle to scream in pain.
Lyria: Octavia!
Octavia: It's okay... There's no cause for concern... I just need some time.
Choose: Is your body all right?
Octavia: Yes, I'll be perfectly fine. I hope this serves as an acceptable apology.
Choose: Don't push yourself...
Octavia: Please, what sort of apology would this be if I didn't push myself?
Continue 1
Vyrn: Huh? An apology?
Octavia: (Captain), you took some medicine this morning, didn't you?
Octavia: When you get to be my age, you begin to wake quite early. I was already up, you see.
Octavia: Which is why I know you took medicine to aid your digestion. That's when I finally realized...
Octavia: The reason you were feeling unwell is because I fed you too much a couple days ago, correct?
Taking (Captain)'s silence as affirmation, Octavia continues her apology.
Octavia: I'm truly sorry... I shouldn't have forced you to eat...
With a shake of the head, (Captain) goes on to explain that Octavia's thoughtfulness was, on the contrary, greatly appreciated.
Lyria: I-I agree! It made me happy to eat your cooking! In fact, I want more!
Vyrn: Yeah, everything tasted so good. Wouldn't hurt to cut back on the amount of food though.
Octavia: What kind children you all are... When you're as old as I am, it's hard not to tear up...
Without uttering another word, Octavia grabs the three and pulls them into a warm embrace.
Octavia: All right, who would like some fresh mochi? There's nothing like a sweet treat to soothe an exhausted body. Go ahead and eat your fill!
A giant platter overflowing with red bean mochi towers menacingly over the table.
Vyrn: Hehe, red bean mochi, huh? Another old-fashioned snack!
Lyria: Haha, yeah... It even goes perfectly with green tea—nice and calming.
The three laugh as they stuff their faces with freshly pounded mochi.
Octavia: (Look at them enjoying the food I prepared... It's a sight that makes my hard work worth the effort.)
Octavia's Grandma: Go ahead and eat up. I've made lots and lots of your favorites.
Octavia: Thank you for the food, Grandma! Everything looks so good!
Octavia: (This does bring me back...)
Octavia: (That's right... My grandma would always make me lots of food whenever we met...)
Octavia: (When you live for two thousand years, many memories become lost to time...)
Octavia: (Yet, it seems some are simply unforgettable...)
Vyrn: More, please! I didn't know freshly pounded mochi could be this good!
Lyria: I'd like some more as well! This mochi is so soft! It's delicious!
Octavia: Here, there's enough for everybody! Eat until you can eat no more!
Following Lyria and Vyrn's lead, (Captain) also goes for seconds.
Watching the joyful scene before her, Octavia gently smiles—just as her own grandmother did long, long ago.
