Always at Your Back

The crew ventures into the cave beneath Ungud Castle, where the miasma is thicker than on the surface. They hear strange groans from deeper down and as they search for the source, they discover artificially made stairs carved into the rock.

The ground beneath the south wall of Ungud Castle has caved in, revealing a cavern beneath.
(Captain) and the crew venture inside to see how deep it goes, and what they can discover about the miasma ravaging Port Breeze.
Tiamat: ...
Rackam: I never expected to find a cave this size under the castle.
Vyrn: There wasn't a trapdoor in the castle leading down here or anything was there?
Vyrn: I mean, if you're not gonna use the cave, what's the point of building right above it?
Rackam: They might not've realized it was down here...
Rackam: But I've got a feeling there's more to it than that.
Lyria: The miasma seems thicker here than it was on the surface.
Lyria: If the other workers are still down here, we need to get them out as soon as possible.
Tiamat: ...
Tiamat gauges the air currents carrying the miasma and points out the way they must go.
Rackam: That's the way down, huh?
Vyrn: All right! Stay sharp, guys! Never know what might pop out at us!
(Captain) and the others cautiously make their way deeper.
But trekking through the seemingly endless gloom begins to sap their stamina.
Vyrn: Yeesh. Just how deep does this cave go?
Lyria: The miasma gets thicker as we go. It's starting to get hard to breathe...
Rackam: Let's take a break, (Captain).
Rackam: At this rate, we'll peter out before we find what we're lookin'—
Just as Rackam is about to sit down, (Captain) spots a group of workers ahead, dragging themselves along the rock walls.
Boss: ...
Tiamat: ...
Lyria: Are you all okay?
The crew hurries over to the construction team and begins distributing the medicine and food they received from the doctor.
Boss: Wheeze... Pant...
Are you ever a sight for sore eyes. I thought we were done for.
Rackam: One of your buddies got out ahead of you and told us you were still down here.
Boss: Haha... Can't tell ya how grateful I am.
Lyria: You're all right now. We'll get you back to safety.
Boss: Thank you...
Boss: Come on, guys! Just hang in there a little longer!
The crew escorts the stranded workers back toward the surface.
Exhausted by their injuries and the miasma, it is all they can do to stay upright, and progress is slow.
???: Rrrhhhh...
Tiamat: ...!
Vyrn: What was that? Did that sound like a monster to you guys?
Lyria: It must just be the wind... Yeah, I'm sure it is...
Rackam: If it's a monster, we've got a problem on our hands. Might be better to go make sure.
When they see the crew peering into the darkness, the construction workers exchange a look.
Boss: You all were in the middle of a mission, weren't you?
Boss: Don't worry about us. Go do what you have to do.
Lyria: But...
Boss: We'll be all right. We got our second wind thanks to the supplies you brought us. We'll make it to the evacuation site on our own.
The workers pound their chests and grin bravely.
  1. All right. Thanks.
  2. Are you really gonna be okay?

Choose: All right. Thanks.

Boss: Hey, we're the ones who should be thanking you. We're grateful.
Go to "Continue 1"

Choose: Are you really gonna be okay?

Boss: You said one of our team already climbed his way out, right? We can't let him show us up!
Rackam: Haha! Stubborn old cuss, aren't you?
Boss: Heh! That's what it takes to work in this business!

Continue 1

Vyrn: The evacuation site is the hall up on the hill. There's a doctor there, so make sure you get checked out properly!
Boss: We will!
The workers stride off, looking more sure-footed than before. When they vanish around a bend in the tunnel, (Captain) and the others resume their journey into the island's depths.
Tiamat: ...
Lyria: Huh? Stairs? Here?
Rackam: Hey, now... Are you tellin' me this cave isn't natural? It was carved out?
Tiamat: ...
Lyria: Um... She says thinking about it won't get us any answers, so we should keep moving.
Rackam: Haha, you've got a point, Tiamat. Maybe there's an explanation waiting down below.
More cautious than ever, (Captain) and the others proceed down the stone stairway.

Always at Your Back: Scene 2

At the bottom of the stairs are the ruins of an ancient civilization that Tiamat says must have been buried when Port Breeze was created. The rest of the crew succumbs to the miasma and loses consciousness, leaving Tiamat to face the creature they've been hearing. She realizes the castle was built there to seal it and the miasma away.

(Captain) and the crew descend a clearly carved staircase into the depths of the cavern. They are struck speechless by what they find at the bottom.
Vyrn: ...
Rackam: Ruins... I never would've expected something like this to be buried under Ungud Castle.
Lyria: Cough, cough...
I feel like the miasma suddenly got thicker...
Tiamat: ...
Tiamat summons the wind to blow away the miasma pooling among the ruins.
Tiamat: ...
Rackam: Thanks. That's a lot better.
Vyrn: Hey, you guys! Take a look at this wall!
The crew joins Vyrn to peer at a dirt-smudged wall.
Rackam: Looks like this used t'be a mural... or somethin'.
Lyria: Yes...
Parts of what look like a mural and writing carved into the wall have been rubbed away and gouged out. Some pieces lie crumbled and fallen in the dust. The original contents are hard to discern.
Rackam: This is one strange mural...
Rackam: Dunno what era it's from, but it sure doesn't look modern.
Tiamat: ...
Rackam: You've got a weird look on your face. What's up?
Tiamat: ...
Lyria: She thinks the ruins this civilization left behind must have been buried when Port Breeze was formed.
Rackam: When it was formed? I thought god created the world and the islands, or whatever.
Rackam: If this mural got busted when that happened...
Rackam: That'd mean it was here well before god created the world...
Rackam: That's above our pay grade, you guys. Makes my head hurt just thinkin' about it.
Tiamat: ...
Rackam: Hm?
Lyria: Ahaha... She says you should give your grey matter a workout every now and then.
Rackam: Tch... Thinking isn't really my strong suit, you know tha—
???: Wuurggh...
Lyria: D-did you hear...
Rackam: Yeah. Wasn't the wind, that's for sure. That was a living creature.
(Captain) and the crew cast their eyes toward the center of the ruins.
The dense miasma rolls in to envelop them once again.
Tiamat: ...!
Lyria: Ngh...
  1. Lyria, stay with me!

Choose: Lyria, stay with me!

Lyria: ...
Vyrn: Dang it! I got a double lungful of it, and now my wings feel like lead...
Tiamat: ...!
Tiamat pits her winds against the miasma.
However...
Rackam: Huff... Huff...
Tiamat: ...!
No matter how many times she blows it away, the thick, cloying vapor only floods back thicker.
Tiamat: ...!
Tiamat's friends succumb to the miasma one by one until only she is left upright.
Tiamat: ...
As she watches (Captain) and the others suffering from the miasma's effects, Tiamat comes to a realization.
Ungud Castle was built above these ruins like a seal.
It was there to protect the islanders from the miasma and whatever it is that lurks in the deeps.
???: Wuurggh...
Tiamat: ...
Over the long years that followed, the castle's original purpose must have been forgotten.
And the people went about their renovation efforts ignorant of what lay beneath.
???: ...
They broke the seal.
Tiamat: ...
???: Nggraaah!
The long-contained entity lets loose a roar redolent of the predator's elation upon sighting its prey.
Tiamat: ...
???: Grrrgraaah...
Tiamat: ...
Tiamat feels other eyes on her and turns from her confrontation with the creature.
???: ...
The ruins are suddenly filled with strange beings.
Tiamat: ...
Tiamat's mind races, searching for a solution as she is completely surrounded.

Always at Your Back: Scene 3

Tiamat manages to escape from a horde of evil creatures and flies toward the surface to get (Captain) and the others to safety. With the crew out of harm's way, Tiamat returns to battle, even though she is gravely injured. The people of Port Breeze lift their voices in prayer to spur Tiamat on. Their faith gives her the strength to turn the tide.

Tiamat stands alone amid her fallen friends in the ruins beneath Ungud Castle.
She attacks, determined to protect the crew.
Tiamat: ...!
???: Grrraaahhh!
However...
???: Grglaaah!
Tiamat: ...!
???: ...!
Tiamat: ...!
Unable to fly freely in such a cramped environment, Tiamat is forced onto the defensive.
The battle threatens to stretch long, and Tiamat worries for (Captain) and the others' safety if she doesn't get them out of there soon.
Tiamat decides that should be her first priority.
Tiamat: ...!
(Captain) & Lyria: ...
Rackam & Vyrn: ...
The primal envelops her friends in a gentle breeze and bears them toward the exit, picking up speed as she goes.
Tiamat: ...!
???: Graaaargh!
???: ...!
Tiamat: ...!
However, the creatures surrounding her have no intention of letting her escape, and Tiamat begins to flag under their onslaught.
???: Grrgraahh!
???: ...!
Tiamat: ...
Tiamat grits her teeth and flies onward, shielding (Captain) and the others with everything she has.
Tiamat: ...!
At last, she outpaces their pursuers.
She bursts out of the cave into the open air.
Before the creatures can catch up, she speeds toward the evacuation site.
Port Breeze's guardian goddess is covered in wounds by the time she sets her charges safely down in the hall.
Tiamat: ...!
Doctor: Wh-what on earth happened to you? And to (Captain) and the others?
Doctor: Hey, you lot! Come help me!
Boss: You got it!
The workmen carry (Captain) and the others to the nearby beds and begin preparations for their treatment.
Tiamat: ...
Doctor: Hey, hold your horses! You're seriously wounded. You need immediate treatment!
Tiamat: ...!
Doctor: I don't know where it is you want to go, but as a doctor, I can't allow it!
Tiamat: ...!
Doctor: Calm down a second! At least let me treat you before you go off half-cocked!
Tiamat: ...
Little Girl: ...
From her own bed, the little girl treated earlier by the doctor now gazes vacantly at Tiamat. Suddenly a sense of deja vu brings the girl to attention.
Little Girl: That lady... She looks like Tiamat...
Boss: Huh? You think?
Hm... Now that you mention it, I guess... Sorta. In the right light.
Carpenter: Hmm?
The little girl's observation spreads gradually among the other evacuees, and murmuring fills the hall.
Carpenter: Yeah, she does. She does!
Carpenter: I was really out of it when she saved me, but now I remember it clearly.
Carpenter: She flew from Ungud Castle all the way here carrying me over her shoulder!
Boss: Wait, are you serious?
Carpenter: As a heart attack! That woman... That woman is Tiamat!
Old Man: Hm? Oho... I see, I see.
Old Man: I always picture the goddess with her three-headed dragon, but look closely.
Old Man: Those noble features could belong to no one else!
As more people raise their voices, the evacuees realize that the woman they had thought merely resembled their goddess is in fact the goddess herself.
Boss: Ahahaha! She's come for us! Tiamat is here to save Port Breeze!
Little Girl: Yeah!
The hall rings with joyous voices, elated that their guardian goddess has manifested in their darkest hour.
Doctor: Hey... Are you really Tiamat?
Tiamat: ...
Conflicted, but thinking a frank answer may bolster her people's spirits, Tiamat gives a firm nod.
Doctor: Ha... Haha! So you really are! You're Tiamat!
Tiamat: ...
Doctor: You want me to take care of (Captain) and the others, is that right?
Tiamat: ...
Seeing that she's able to communicate with the islanders, a relieved smile softens Tiamat's features.
Alas, she has not long to savor that happiness. A roar from outside rattles the hall doors.
???: Rrraaahhh...
Tiamat: ...!
Little Girl: Wh-what was that?
Tiamat: ...
Little Girl: Yeah... It'll be okay. You're here, so I'm not scared at all!
Tiamat fondly strokes the child's head. Her determined gaze swings toward the door, and in the next moment she flies out into the storm.
Tiamat: ...
???: Grrr...
???: ...
Pushing her wounded body to the limit, Tiamat uses all her strength to summon a gale.
She unleashes it upon the creature.
Tiamat: ...!
???: Grrngh... Grrraaahhh!
Tiamat: ...!
???: ...
Tiamat: ...!
Out in the open skies, Tiamat can maneuver freely and use the full extent of her powers.
But the creature is incredibly strong and Tiamat is struck by blow after blow.
Tiamat: ...!
Determined to protect the skydwellers depending on her, Tiamat does not falter.
???: ...!
???: Groooaaarrr!
Tiamat: ...!
Tiamat braves the roaring tempest to defend Port Breeze.
The islanders in the evacuation shelter watch wide-eyed as their goddess fights for them.
Boss: You filthy monsters! How dare you hurt Tiamat!
Little Girl: Tiamat... You can do it!
Roused by the evacuees' cries, (Captain) and the crew stumble out of the hall.
Rackam: Damn it, Tiamat! Why would you go fight by yourself!
Rackam: The best I can do from this far off is put a little lead in that thing.
Rackam takes aim, but (Captain) holds out a hand to stop him.
  1. Don't shoot.

Choose: Don't shoot.

Rackam: Why not? I'm no god, but I'm not completely useless.
Rackam follows (Captain)'s gaze and realizes the source of the captain's objection.
Rackam: Tch... I see. Yeah, you've got a point. We've got sick and injured in this hall.
Rackam: They might all get caught in the crossfire if we draw that thing's attention.
Lyria: Tiamat says... She's going to take down those monsters, no matter what...
Rackam: Tiamat...
The islanders raise their voices in prayer to the determined wind guardian.
Islanders: O Tiamat...
???: Graaaoooohhh!
???: ...!
Tiamat: ...
No matter how many times the creatures knock her back, Tiamat grits her teeth and returns to the fray.
Tiamat: ...!
???: ...!
The people are deeply moved by Tiamat's refusal to give up, even in her injured state.
Doctor: All we can do now is pray to Tiamat!
Old Man: That's right... We have to pray harder! Let her know the strength of our faith!
Islanders: Hear us, Tiamat!
Their prayer is no simple request to a deity.
It is a battle cry to spur on the guardian risking everything for their sake.
The heartfelt prayers, the earnest emotions of all Port Breeze combined, bring about a miracle.
Tiamat: ...
???: ...
???: ...
Tiamat: ...!
Cruel jaws yawn, and a gaping mouth filled with razor fangs is poised to devour Tiamat.
Before they can close around her, the goddess is enveloped in a faint light.
Tiamat: ...!
It is the manifestation of Port Breeze's prayers—the will of the archipelago she is bound to protect.
Wreathed in that light, Tiamat feels something inside her awaken.
Tiamat: ...
Tiamat rises slowly, power filling and overflowing from her. Her diamond-sharp gaze lances through the creature.
???: Grrrr...
???: ...!
Tiamat: ...!
Armored in the prayers of her people, empowered by their belief, Port Breeze's guardian begins her counterattack.

Always at Your Back: Scene 4

Empowered by the islanders' faith in her, Tiamat defeats the beast once sealed beneath Ungud Castle. Next she dissipates the miasma-filled clouds enveloping the archipelago. The grateful residents heap praises on their guardian goddess. Watching the scene, Rackam realizes just how lucky they are to have Tiamat on the crew.

Tiamat: ...
???: Rrrrggghhh...
???: ...
Tiamat unleashes a final attack with all her strength behind it.
The fearsome being so long sealed beneath Castle Ungud is obliterated by her power.
Rackam: Ha... Haha! She did it! Tiamat did it!
Islanders: ...!
Tiamat: ...
Tiamat smiles at the islanders and the crew, whose elated voices ring out from below.
Then she turns her winds against the dark clouds hemming in the archipelago.
Tiamat: ...!
It is the work of an instant.
The miasma-laced clouds disperse, and the sun bathes Port Breeze in brilliant light.
Old Man: The sun... Haha... I can see the sun!
Islanders: ...!
The islanders rejoice to feel the sun's rays for the first time in what seems like ages. One little girl's eyes are fixed squarely on Tiamat.
Little Girl: Hehe... You're all sparkly in the sun, Tiamat. You're so pretty...
Doctor: You're quite right. I never realized what a vision of loveliness was watching over us all.
Carpenter: Thanks, Tiamat!
Boss: Whaddya mean, "thanks"? Show some manners, man! Try, "we humbly thank you"!
Old Man: Ho ho ho... Take a look at our goddess's smile, and then tell me she's the sort to stand on formality.
Tiamat: ...
Once again, the citizens of Port Breeze offer their prayers to their gently smiling guardian.
They ask her to continue watching over them as she always has.
Observing the islanders' tearful shows of gratitude, the same feeling swells in the crew's hearts.
Rackam: ...
Vyrn: Hehe, what's up with you, Rackam? You're all smiley.
Rackam: I was just thinkin'... Look how much everyone in Port Breeze worships Tiamat.
Rackam: An' she rides with us. We're pretty damn lucky.
Tiamat: ...
Tiamat, guardian goddess of Port Breeze, has successfully carried out her duty.
Her bounteous winds will no doubt shelter and nurture this archipelago for as long as it floats in these endless skies.
