Right for the Role
Rimuru and Shion approach (Captain) looking for work, leading to a variety of assignments for the Tempest members. When a dispute arises between Shion and Diablo over the secretary role, Rimuru suggests they simply continue alternating. A delighted Shion is then appointed as personal chef to both Rimuru and Benimaru.
Shion: Pardon the intrusion!
One day, Shion and Rimuru pay an unexpected visit to (Captain)'s quarters.
As Shion bursts through the door, Rimuru trails behind wearing an apologetic smile.
Vyrn: Yeesh, you nearly scared me outta my scales. What's goin' on?
Rimuru: Sorry, guys. I told Shion there was no rush, but it went in one ear and out the other.
Rimuru: I hate to interrupt your downtime, but do you have a second to spare?
Lyria: Sure, that's no problem at all. What is it?
Shion: Great Rimuru has an important message for (Captain)!
Go ahead, Great Rimuru!
Go ahead, Great Rimuru!
Vyrn: You're gonna make him do all the talkin'?
Must be rough gettin' dragged around like that, Rimuru.
Must be rough gettin' dragged around like that, Rimuru.
Rimuru: Ahaha... Let's just say I'm used to it. Anyway, it's really nothing major, but here goes...
Rimuru: The thing is, we've been staying with you guys since we came to this world, but we haven't really done much in return, right?
Rimuru: Considering we still don't know when we'll be heading home, it feels wrong to keep mooching like this.
Rimuru: So I figured it was about time we start pulling our weight as part of the crew.
Lyria: That's really nice of you, but don't feel like you have to push yourself. After all, you're the ones stuck in a strange new world.
Shion: But that's just it, Lyria! Great Rimuru wants to take on missions and other work in order to get accustomed to this realm!
Vyrn: Y'know, that actually makes sense. You would get to learn a lot that way!
Vyrn: But I gotta say, I'm surprised you're so gung ho about this, Shion.
Shion: Oh? Why is that?
Vyrn: Well, you and Diablo usually hate the idea of Rimuru doin' grunt work, right?
Shion: Naturally! Such menial tasks are far beneath our esteemed Great Rimuru!
Rimuru: Listen to you using all those fancy words correctly... You've come a long way, Shion.
Shion: Thank you very much! I'm constantly improving to ensure that I'm worthy of my role as First Secretary!
Rimuru: Glad to hear it. But let me clarify one thing—I'm open to any kind of task, no matter how small.
Rimuru: I've already got the nod from Diablo and Shion. As a freeloader, it's not my place to be picky about the work I'm given.
Shion: Urgh, just the thought of Great Rimuru doing mundane labor makes me shudder... But despite my reservations, his wishes come first.
Shion: Not to mention, we all have a strong desire to repay your crew for their kindness, (Captain)!
Shion: Please feel free to assign any jobs you have to us—Great Rimuru included!
Vyrn: All right! In that case...
Actually, sorry to say, but we don't really have any requests on our plate right now.
Actually, sorry to say, but we don't really have any requests on our plate right now.
Lyria: There might be some chores around the ship they could help with, like cleaning or cooking...
Vyrn: That's fine and all, but it'd be nice if we could find somethin' else for 'em to do.
Lyria: Hmm... Then how about we all take on a request together?
Rimuru: Ooh, do you go to a tavern or guild or something to pick up quests? Sounds like fun!
Vyrn: Yeah, pretty much. We usually get ours from the Knickknack Shack though.
Choose: You'd be a big help.
Shion: We certainly would! With our numbers, we can easily manage any job you send our way!
Lyria: Hehe, that's very reassuring. Does that mean all your friends are going to be lending a hand, Rimuru?
Rimuru: Yeah, that's the plan. I've already talked it over with Benimaru, Shuna, and the gang.
Rimuru: If it's not too much trouble, could we assign them some tasks too?
Lyria: You bet! Let's go find the perfect jobs for everyone!
Choose: Get ready for a tough ride!
Shion: Oh? I didn't expect you to put such an emphasis on hierarchy! Luckily, survival of the fittest is the principle we live by!
Shion: Very well! As Great Rimuru's First Secretary, I'll do everything in my power to raise his rank as quickly as possible!
Rimuru: Talk about shifting the goalposts! And you do realize that working hard will only boost your own rank, right?
Shion: Wait, is that so? I thought surely all my efforts would be counted toward your achievements...
Rimuru: I appreciate the loyalty, but do I really come across as some ruthless Demon Lord who'd steal all the credit from my subordinates?
Shion: N-no, absolutely not...
Vyrn: Also, we're not that kind of crew anyway.
Shion: Huh? R-really?
Vyrn: Yeah, it was a joke. (Captain) probably just wanted to tease ya.
Shion: Tease... me?
Shion: Arrrgh!
Rimuru: Haha, you totally fell for it. Anyway, let's round up everyone and head out to find some work!
Continue 1Thus, (Captain) and the crew agree to allocate tasks to Rimuru and company.
Before setting out with the others in search of requests, Lyria speaks with Shuna about a job on the Grandcypher.
Lyria: Okay, Shuna! Then we'll ask you to help out in the galley!
Shuna: Of course. And what a magnificent kitchen... I can hardly wait to get started.
Vyrn: With all the mouths we've got to feed, it's always crazy hectic! We can use all the help we can get!
Shuna: Hehe, leave it to me. I'd love to cook some of our favorite dishes for you all sometime.
Shuna: By the way, I also have some experience with fabrics, so if you need any mending or laundry done, just let me know.
Vyrn: Dang, that's impressive! Reminds me of a maid. Is that what ya do for work?
Shion: How dare you! I'll have you know that she is no less than princess of the Ogres!
Vyrn: What! S-seriously? So the total opposite of a maid...
Vyrn: M-my bad... You're such a jack-of-all-trades, I got the wrong idea. Sorry for bein' so rude.
Shuna: Oh, not at all! Please don't give it a second thought. My days as a princess are behind me.
Shuna: Now, I serve at Great Rimuru's side as his aide.
Lyria: Wow... No wonder you're so skilled.
Shion: Indeed! Princess Shuna excels at managing every task down to the smallest detail!
Shuna: Hehe, thank you, Shion. Though I may not spend much time on the front lines myself, I'll do my utmost to support you all from here on the ship!
After taking on a monster-hunting request, the crew then seeks out Rimuru's companions who seem most fit for the task.
Hakurou: Oho. So you wish to entrust us with the monster extermination.
Benimaru: In other words, you've deemed us the right candidates for the job. Well, we are quite confident in our ability.
Benimaru: We'll make every effort to bring honor to Great Rimuru's name.
Lyria: We get lots of monster-hunting requests from all over the skies, so we'll be counting on you!
Vyrn: Also, (Captain) was hopin' to train with you guys when you've got some spare time.
Vyrn: (Captain) thinks Hakurou's got some solid teaching skills and would love a few pointers.
Benimaru: Well, well... Your captain has quite the discerning eye. Hakurou happens to be Tempest's swordsmanship instructor.
Shion: He's also the mentor of both Benimaru and Great Rimuru himself!
Lyria: What! R-Rimuru and Benimaru? That's incredible...
Hakurou: Please, you flatter this old man too much. But I must say, (Captain) seems to have overcome a fair number of trials on the battlefield as well.
Hakurou: Color me intrigued. It would be my pleasure to engage in a sparring match with your captain, warrior to warrior.
The crew next comes across a night patrol request and heads to recruit the most suitable candidates.
Soei: I would be honored to accept this nighttime surveillance mission.
Ranga: With Soei and myself on watch, not even the slightest movement of a monster will go unnoticed.
Lyria: That's really encouraging to hear! With you around, I bet even ghosts won't stand a chance!
Ranga: Ghosts, you say... If they have a physical form like the undead, we could most certainly strike a fatal blow.
Soei: I'm unsure whether my Sticky Steel Thread has an effect on spiritual entities. I'll simply have to try and see what happens.
Shion: Those two might not sound confident, but they're just being extra cautious! Trust me—they'll be fine!
Shion: Their piercing gazes alone are enough to send any enemy—ghost or monster—fleeing in terror!
Rimuru: N-no doubt about that. Honestly, bumping into them in the middle of the night would probably be scarier than any ghost...
Once the tasks have been divvied up, (Captain) and company approach those still in need of an assignment.
Rimuru: Looks like it's finally our turn. What do you need us to do?
Shion: Rest assured, I'm a most capable secretary. I can handle anything you command!
Vyrn: Hmm, then let's see... You guys are super strong, so how 'bout joinin' the monster hunt?
Diablo: Wait a moment. Surely it is unnecessary for Great Rimuru to personally exert himself.
Shion: Wha—Diablo! Isn't it a little late to be saying that?
Diablo: Great Rimuru was uncomfortable with the fact that we were all being treated as honored guests.
Diablo: However, now that a number of our companions have found their respective roles, I believe our contributions are sufficient for our stay.
Diablo: Therefore, might I suggest that he remain on the Grandcypher... while I, of course, attend to him as his secretary?
Rimuru: Well, you've got a point. If I keep going out on missions and whatnot, the Six Dragons might not be too happy about it.
Shion: Th-that's sneaky, Diablo! What gives you the right to just waltz in and claim the role of secretary all for yourself?
Shion: As First Secretary, it's only natural that I should have priority in looking after Great Rimuru!
Diablo: Heheheh... I merely thought that in a floating environment such as this, my wings might render me more effective in an emergency.
Shion: Great Rimuru can fly on his own! Don't think you can steal the secretary position with such a flimsy excuse!
Shion: If that's how you want to play, then what say we establish a formal hierarchy right here and now?
Diablo: Oho? Very well. I shall take this opportunity to thoroughly crush your spirit.
Rimuru: Hey! Don't start a fight right here on the ship! You'll just cause trouble for the crew!
Shion: G-Great Rimuru!
Diablo: My deepest apologies. I overstepped my bounds.
Rimuru: What's the point in arguing over who gets to be secretary? Just keep taking turns like you always have.
Lyria: They've been taking turns?
Vyrn: Rimuru sure is popular...
Rimuru: On days when you're not on secretary duty, I want both of you to find some other work to do! Got it?
Diablo: As you wish, Great Rimuru. If it is your command, I shall comply without fail.
Shion: U-understood.
Shion: (What should I do now? I certainly don't mind assisting with requests...)
Shion: (But even when I'm not serving as secretary, I'd like to be as close to Great Rimuru as possible. Hrm...)
Shion: ...!
Wait, I know! Why didn't I think of this sooner!
Wait, I know! Why didn't I think of this sooner!
Shion: Great Rimuru, I've heard your orders loud and clear! Therefore, I will take it upon myself to assist Princess Shuna in the Grandcypher's kitchen!
Rimuru: What!
Shion: This way, I can stay near you even on my days off. It's a win-win situation!
Lyria: If you really want to be with Rimuru, then I don't see why not. But, um...
Shuna: Lady Lyria... Unless you wish to mentally scar the entire crew, I strongly suggest you stop her.
Lyria: S-scar them? You mean with Shion's cooking?
Shuna's words remind the crew of the one time they witnessed Shion's culinary skills.
Somehow, every vegetable she grilled had inexplicably transformed into a strange, sludge-like substance.
Vyrn: We'd better nip this in the bud.
Benimaru: Yes, I think that would be for the best. We're accustomed to her concoctions, but serving them here would be a disaster.
Rimuru: But look at how excited she is. Rejecting her outright just feels wrong. Hmm...
Rimuru: Okay, Shion. On the days you're not acting as secretary, you can be the personal chef for me and Benimaru!
Benimaru: What! Me too?
Shion: Really? Yahoo!
Rimuru: Yeah. Since we're still adjusting to life here, it'd be great if you could cook some meals like we had back home.
Rimuru: And don't worry about making too much! I'll... I mean, Benimaru and I will make sure to eat every single bite!
Benimaru: G-Great Rimuru...
Shion: ...!
Of course! You can count on me!
Of course! You can count on me!
Benimaru: Why did you have to involve me in this, Great Rimuru! That's just cruel!
Rimuru: You said it yourself—we can't serve her food to the crew. Only those of us who've built up a tolerance can handle it.
Rimuru: So I'm sorry, but you've got to suffer with me...
Lyria: I-I'll eat it too! Despite what it looks like, Shion's cooking is actually really good!
Benimaru: Lyria... There's no need to force yourself.
Urgh... I'd better brace my stomach...
Urgh... I'd better brace my stomach...
Shion: Ah, a personal chef! Hehe, that has a nice ring to it! All right—time to get cooking!
Beaming brightly, Shion immediately heads out to buy ingredients.
She remains blissfully unaware of Benimaru's reproachful gaze still directed at Rimuru.
Legend of the Oni Deity
As (Captain) and Shion conclude a sparring session, crew members Mirin and Shion emerge from the shadows where they had been observing. Mistaking the ogre for a samurai, they ask to hear her stories, but the conversation is cut short by the sudden arrival of Milim.
One quiet day without any requests, (Captain) and the crew are invited to a training session with Shion and Rimuru.
Happy to teach the curious pair about how battles are fought in the Sky Realm, the captain engages them in a sparring session.
Shuna: What would you say to a short break? I've prepared water canteens for everyone.
Shion: Thank you, Princess Shuna! Now that we've stopped moving, I suddenly feel really hungry.
Shuna: Hehe, should I have brought snacks too? Speaking of which, isn't this island—
Shion: Wait, Princess.
Holding her arm protectively in front of Shuna, Shion casts a sharp glance at a nearby bush.
Shion: You there, hiding in the shadows. I don't know what your intentions are, but I suggest you come out quietly.
Shion: If you mean to cause harm, I will show no mercy!
Mirin: Ah, oh no, I'm so sorry! We're out, we're out!
Shion: 'Tis shameful that our presence was detected... However, I assure you that we are not suspicious individuals.
Shion: A likely story! Spying from the shadows is the very definition of suspicious!
Vyrn: Wait, hold up! That's Mirin and Shion!
Vyrn: Don't worry, they're our friends! They're not shady stalkers or anything!
Shion: What? Your friends?
Shion: And you... Your name is Shion too?
Shion: Correct. My name, like yours, is Shion.
Mirin: You and your comrades seem to be incredibly skilled samurai...
Mirin: So when we heard you were going to be training with (Captain), we snuck over to observe!
Mirin: And we found ourselves captivated by the powerful way you wielded your sword.
Shion: Indeed. It's quite a coincidence to encounter someone with the same name treading the same path. I would be grateful for the chance to learn from you.
Mirin: Please teach us all about how samurai in your world live!
Rimuru: Samurai, huh...
Rimuru: (Judging from their attire, they probably mean samurai like the ones in historical dramas. Are you telling me they exist in this world too?)
Rimuru: (But even though Shion's sword and some of the others' outfits look Japanese, none of them are actually samurai...)
Rimuru: (How should I explain this?)
Shion: Hmm... I'm not entirely sure what you mean by "samurai," but it seems I've done something to earn your respect!
Shion: If you think I can be of assistance, then by all means! I'm more than happy to describe our culture or spar with you—whatever you need!
Mirin: Gozaru! That's great news, huh, Shion?
Shion: Thank you most sincerely. I shall endeavor to absorb as much as I can.
Shion: Well then, I suppose I'll start by telling you about the Ogre Village where my companions and I were raised...
Rimuru: (She's clearly enjoying being looked up to, so it'd be a shame to spoil the moment. Yeah, I'll just keep my mouth shut.)
Shion: But one fateful day, our homeland was devastated by an Orc invasion.
Shion: We narrowly escaped with our lives and eventually found our way to the Forest of Jura, where we met Great Rimuru.
Mirin: To have your home destroyed in such a way... Just the thought of it makes my heart ache.
Shion: Oh, forgive me! I didn't intend to upset you!
Shion: It's true that we endured many hardships... but they also came with a silver lining.
Shion: A silver lining?
Shion: Yes. They allowed us to meet Great Rimuru, the most extraordinary master one could ask for.
Shion: He bestowed names upon each of us and welcomed us as his followers.
Shion: In return for his kindness, we now serve him faithfully. Especially me, as his First Secretary!
Shion: I see. To you all, Rimuru is the ideal master.
Shion: Hearing you speak so proudly about serving him is nothing short of inspiring.
Shion: That is truly the essence of the samurai spirit. I aspire to hold myself with such pride as well.
Shion: As someone who's been granted the same name as I have, you most certainly can! I guarantee it—from one Shion to another!
Shion: Ah, I know! If you're interested, why don't we train together?
Mirin: Gozaru! Ooh, sign me up! I'll give it everything I've got!
Shion: Having witnessed your bold and commanding swordplay, I welcome the opportunity to match blades with you.
Shion: I'm thrilled to hear that you think so highly of me! After all, any praise for me reflects on Great Rimuru as well!
Shion: But bear in mind that I am still very much lacking in experience. Great Rimuru is countless times stronger!
Shion: I could never hope to compare with him—
Suddenly, a dark flash interrupts Shion mid-sentence.
Milim: And you're no match for Rimuru's bestie either! In other words—me!
The intruder's sudden arrival leaves (Captain) and the crew in a state of shock.
Meanwhile, Milim stands boldly as the center of attention, her chest puffed out with pride.
Legend of the Oni Deity: Scene 2
Shion scolds Milim for interrupting, but Shuna prevents tensions from escalating further by informing them about a nearby shop known for its delicious cookies. When they arrive to find the shop closed due to harassment by a local noble hoping to seize the land, Rimuru consults Raphael to devise a solution.
In the midst of their training, Milim suddenly soars down from the sky to strike a confident pose before the crew.
Rimuru is first to break the stunned silence.
Rimuru: Milim, don't just swoop in out of nowhere like that! And you refused when I invited you to join us earlier. What changed?
Milim: I mean, who wants to knuckle down and train when you're in such an awesome new world? That's no fun!
Milim: But I was bored on the ship, so I decided to come crash your training session and make you play with me instead!
Milim: So—you two over there! Tell me about some cool stuff in this world!
With this demand, Milim points emphatically at Mirin and Shion.
Mirin: Huh? Us?
Milim: That's right! I noticed you guys are dressed a little differently from (Captain).
Milim: So I bet that means you know about different kinds of tasty food too!
Shion: Delectable dishes from the far east? Mirin might know, but I'm afraid I don't have much expertise in that area—
Shion: Now, wait just a moment, Lady Milim! Those two came to me for guidance!
Shion: We're having a moment here, so please don't interrupt!
Milim: Hmph! You've done nothing but gripe at me since we came here, Shion!
Milim: Come on, we're in a whole new world! It'd be a waste not to enjoy it!
Rimuru: Shion only gets mad because you keep roaming around willy-nilly! Just stay put!
Milim: Boo... You too, Rimuru?
Shion: Exactly! We have to hear you complain every single day about wanting to get off the ship!
Shion: It's because you and Lord Veldora are always wandering off that Great Rimuru never has any time for me!
Rimuru: That's why you were mad?
Milim: L-like I care! Keep getting in my way, and I'm really going to lose my temper!
Shion: I have every right to be angry too! Just stop the shenanigans already!
Milim & Shion: Grr...
Shuna: That's enough!
Shuna steps in between the pair, holding up her hands to separate them.
Shuna: There will be no snacks for anyone who fights!
At Shuna's stern rebuke, Shion and Milim immediately back down and turn to face her.
Shion: D-did you say snacks?
Milim: I want snacks! I'll stop fighting!
Rimuru: Phew, crisis averted. Thanks, Shuna.
Shuna: Hehe. There's no more effective way to break up an argument.
Milim: So where exactly are those snacks, Shuna? I'm starving!
Shuna: Unfortunately, I don't have them on hand. They're sold in a nearby town.
Shuna: According to Soei's research, there's a delicious confectionery in the closest town from here.
Shuna: It's a long-established shop renowned for its amazing signature cookies.
Shion: I see. Then there's no time to waste! Let's go, Great Rimuru!
Milim: Hey, you're not getting a head start on me! I'm going first!
Mirin: Ah, wait! You'll get lost all on your own!
Shion: We've visited this island before, so allow us to guide you. Come along, (Captain).
Lyria: Huh? Wait, what about their training session with Shion?
Vyrn: Meh, they can train after they eat. Not like they would've gotten much done with Milim around anyway.
Shuna: Hehe. Well, I suppose I'll wait here. Make sure to keep an eye on those two, Great Rimuru.
Rimuru: (Did Shuna just casually stick me with babysitting duty?)
Vyrn: They're already out of eyeshot! We'd better hurry before they get lost!
Rimuru: Oh, fine, whatever! Milim, Shion, wait up!
Somehow managing to keep their eager companions in check, (Captain) and the crew arrive at their destination.
However, upon speaking with the shop owner, Shion's eyes widen in surprise.
Shion: What! You don't have any of your signature cookies—or anything else for that matter?
Milim: What happened? Did everything sell out because it's so popular?
Confectioner: No, that's not it. The truth is, there's a bit of a... situation preventing me from opening the store.
Shion: A situation, you say? Please, do tell us more. We might be able to help.
Confectioner: Well, recently some scary folks have been hanging around the shop during business hours.
Confectioner: They shoot menacing looks at my customers and have even ruined products by deliberately splashing water on them.
Confectioner: So I've been forced to keep the shop closed for a while.
Rimuru: What the heck! That's straight-up obstruction of business! What's their goal in doing all that?
Confectioner: They say they want me to sell the land my shop is on to support the town's development.
Confectioner: But I inherited this shop from my parents. It's precious to me, so I have no desire to part with it.
Rimuru: Aha, so they're land sharks, huh? What a pain...
Shion: Don't worry, ma'am. Whatever their motive, such thuggery cannot be allowed to stand.
Shion: I'll cut down those scoundrels with my trusty Goriki-maru!
Milim: Count me in too! I'll blast 'em away without leaving a single speck behind!
Confectioner: N-no, you can't... The folks who come here are rumored to have ties with the island's nobility.
Confectioner: If you young ladies do something rash, you could end up paying dearly for it.
Shion: If that's the case, then we'll just take out that noble too! No problem!
Rimuru: Whoa, whoa, hold on! That's actually a huge problem!
Rimuru: This world has its own laws we need to abide by. Making a big scene will only cause trouble for the crew!
Milim: But Rimuru! If we don't save the shop, we won't get to enjoy those tasty cookies!
Shion: Besides, even though it's not our affair, we can't simply turn a blind eye now! We have to help somehow!
Rimuru: Yeah, I feel the same way. But just using brute force won't lead to a real solution.
Rimuru: Say, Raphael-san. Do you have any good ideas?
Raphael: Answer. Following an analysis of the available information on this world, I have a proposal.
Rimuru: Hmm... I see...
After listening intently to Raphael's suggestion, Rimuru nods firmly and turns toward the crew.
Rimuru: All right! I think I've got a more peaceful way to resolve this!
Perking up at this declaration, (Captain) and company eagerly gather around Rimuru to hear his plan.
Legend of the Oni Deity: Scene 3
Shion visits the noble's mansion disguised as a local deity, where her imposing presence and Milim's destructive bombardment frighten the noble into halting his land grabs. A few days later, after enjoying some tasty cookies with her companions, Shion at last begins training with her two new samurai friends.
Rimuru: So, first things first. You have beings like gods and yokai in this world, right?
Vyrn: Yeah, we do. In some places, primal beasts are pretty much treated like gods.
Shion: Yokai are also prevalent in the far east, where Mirin and I hail from.
Mirin: Shion's pretty well-versed in literature about yokai tales!
Rimuru: Gotcha. So yokai are common enough to have books written about them, huh? Then that might be the best route to take.
Milim: Rimuru, what exactly are you planning? I'm not following at all.
Rimuru: Ah, right. To put it simply, I'm thinking of coming up with a sort of "local deity."
Shion: A local deity? In other words, a god with its own territory, similar to you and the other Demon Lords?
Rimuru: Exactly. And just like us Demon Lords, this deity would get really mad if someone stirred up trouble in its domain.
Rimuru: If we make it seem like everything's the work of some supernatural being instead of another person, there won't be any bad blood, right?
Milim: I get it! Well, not really, but it sounds impressive! That's our Rimuru!
Rimuru: (To be fair, Raphael-sensei thought up the initial idea...)
Shion: But Great Rimuru, how exactly do you intend to create this deity?
Rimuru: I'll need someone to take on the role of our new god and pay a visit to the noble who's behind all the land grabbing.
Rimuru: And then they'll scare the living daylights out of them. I'd like to leave this task to you, Shion. How about it?
Shion: I'd be delighted! Though I don't have the slightest idea what I'm supposed to do!
Rimuru: Right, about that... Mirin-san, Shion-san, are there oni in this world too?
Mirin: Gozaru! Yes, oni are so famous that even I'm familiar with them!
Shion: Oni are depicted in folklore as having large horns and wielding enormous clubs, reflecting their vast strength.
Shion: Additionally, some texts include tales of them punishing miscreants who dared to disturb their mountain dwellings.
Rimuru: (Just as I thought, they exist here as well. And it sounds like they're pretty well-known... Great, this works out perfectly.)
Rimuru: So basically, we're going to make up an oni who acts as this island's deity and is furious about the land being exploited.
Rimuru: We'll use this story to frighten that noble into stopping their development projects and land grabs.
Rimuru: Shion, I need your strength for this mission. Would you be willing to play the part of the oni?
Shion: Yes! Gladly, Great Rimuru!
Shion: Excuse me, Shion and Mirin! Could you tell me more about the oni in this world?
Mirin: Absolutely! Let's work together to create the scariest, coolest oni ever!
Milim: Hmph... Why does Shion get to do everything? I want a part too!
Rimuru: Relax, Milim. We can't pull this off without you either. I've got a big job with your name on it.
Rimuru leans over to whisper his idea into Milim's ear.
Milim: Wow, now that sounds like fun! Leave everything to me!
Rimuru: All right. We'll carry out our plan tonight under the cover of darkness!
That night, two dubious figures meet for a clandestine discussion within a noble's estate.
Noble: I've been expecting you. So, what's the latest progress on that plot of land?
Shady Man: Everything's going smoothly, my lord. That old bat hasn't shown any signs of reopening her shop.
Shady Man: Without the cash flow from her business, she won't be able to make ends meet, and she'll have no choice but to sell.
Noble: Bahaha! At long last, we're getting close to seizing that land.
Noble: All right, keep up the good work. As usual, you'll receive your payment from the butler—
Just then, a window facing the garden shatters loudly, revealing a shadowy figure.
Noble: Wh-who's there!
Shion: Hmph, know your place. I am none other than the one who reigns supreme over this island...
Shion: An Oni—the god of this land.
Noble: A-a god?
Shion: I have come this eve to deliver a warning. Noble, cease your development plans on this land immediately.
Shion: This is a divine decree. It would be in your best interest not to defy me.
Noble: Wh-who do you think you are! First you barge into my residence, and then you have the audacity to declare yourself a god?
Noble: Enough of this nonsense! Stay right where you are! I'll have you arrested this instant!
Shion: Hah... Is that so? Then the lightning of judgment shall strike you down!
Shion: Behold!
With this proclamation, Shion raises her Goriki-maru skyward.
From high above, an observer takes notice.
Milim: Aha! That pose—it's Shion's signal!
Milim: All right, you noble jerk. I'll make you regret getting between me and my tasty treats with every fiber of your being!
Milim: Drago Buster!
Milim unleashes a barrage of beams from her hands, riddling the mansion's courtyard with holes in an instant.
Rimuru: (Wow, she actually managed to hold back.)
Rimuru: (I mean, the garden is pretty much obliterated, but still. Milim's power is as monstrous as ever.)
Noble: Wh-what in the skies was that light! My garden, my beautiful garden!
Shion: Oho? Is this really the time to be lamenting your courtyard? If this continues, your very form may soon share its fate.
Shady Man: Y-you gotta be kidding me! That oni is the real deal! I quit!
Shady Man: Your Godliness, this man is the one to blame! Please, have mercy on me!
Noble: Wha... Y-you traitor!
Shion: Very well. See to it that you never go near that town again.
Shion: And you? What is your decision?
Noble: Eep!
Struck by the intensity of Shion's gaze, the noble falls to his knees, trembling in fear.
Noble: Please forgive me, Your Godliness! I swear I'll never meddle with that shop ever again!
Shion: A vow made to a god is absolute. I trust that there is no falsehood in your words?
Shion: Should you fail to honor your pledge, know that not even a trace of your existence shall remain in this world.
Noble: Y-y-yes, of course! I'll stay far away from that town and halt all development! You have my word!
Shion: Good. Then I shall spare you—this time.
Shion: But you would do well not to forget my wrath.
Both: Yes, Your Godliness!
As the two continue to grovel in fear, Shion solemnly makes her exit through the window.
A few days later, (Captain) and the crew return to the confectionery.
Shion: Hello again, ma'am! How are things here?
Milim: I smell the sweet scent of cookies! Looks like you're ready to open up shop again!
Confectioner: Hehe. Those folks haven't been around lately, so I've been able to run the shop as usual.
Confectioner: I don't know what happened... but I'm sure you were behind it. Thank you so much.
Shion: If you want to thank someone, thank Great Rimuru! It was by his wisdom that everything was resolved!
Rimuru: No, you and Milim definitely played a huge part. Not to mention, Shion-san and Mirin-san had some really great ideas...
Milim: That's right, I deserve lots of credit too! Now, hurry up and sell us some cookies!
Confectioner: Of course. Here you are, everyone. They're fresh out of the oven, so please enjoy.
With this, the confectioner hands Shion a large bag full of cookies.
Shion: Then don't mind if I do... Munch!
Shion: ...!
O-oh my goodness!
O-oh my goodness!
Milim: Shion, hand some over here too!
Milim: ...!
Shion: It has the perfect amount of crunch and a subtle, melt-in-your-mouth sweetness that's not overly rich...
Milim: These are insanely good! I could eat a million of them!
Milim: Let's buy a whole bunch and take them back with us! Food always tastes better when you share it with friends!
Shion: I couldn't agree more! Let's stock up and give them out as souvenirs!
After returning home with a massive haul of cookies, (Captain) and company hold an impromptu tea party.
Shuna: Wow, these truly are delicious! And it's all thanks to your efforts that we can enjoy them, Shion, Lady Milim.
Shion: Yes, I cut quite the majestic figure! I wish you could have seen me, Princess Shuna!
Milim: And it was my special move that made her even more impressive!
Mirin: Gozaru! She really was cool out there! Wasn't she, Shion?
Shion: Indeed. Like a yokai straight out of legend.
Shion: Hehe, it was certainly a performance fit for an Oni. Wouldn't you agree, Great Rimuru?
Rimuru: Yeah, it was like three times scarier than I imagined! Nice work, Shion!
Shion: Hehe, it was entirely owing to your profound wisdom, Great Rimuru!
Mirin: S-so, um... Once everything settles down...
Shion: ...!
That's right—training! I'm so sorry, it completely slipped my mind!
That's right—training! I'm so sorry, it completely slipped my mind!
Milim: Geez, you really are hopeless. But since I'm in a good mood, I'll join you!
Shion: As I already said, those two came to me specifically!
Milim: Oh, give it a rest already! Keep complaining, and I'll take your cookies too, Shion!
Vyrn: Here we go again... Hard to tell if they're friends or foes.
Mirin: Ahaha...
The pair continue bickering until (Captain) manages to appease Milim with more cookies.
Afterward, Shion at last begins her training session with the two samurai.
Throughout her rigorous yet kind instruction, the terrifying, oni-like visage she had displayed to the noble is nowhere to be seen.
