The best swordsman in all of the Shinsengumi. Despite this, he can often be found brandishing a bazooka in his many attempts to kill off Toshiro Hijikata in order to take his title of vice-commander. He is intensely clever, and often uses this cleverness to find ways out of working. He actually noticed that Shinpachi remained stuck in the back cover of Jump, but owing to his sadistic nature decided not to say anything.
