A Vow under the Night Sky

Suzaku uses the Lancelot to help (Captain) and the crew deliver goods to a nearby mining village. A sudden earthquake strikes the island, causing the mines to collapse and trapping the miners with the hostile monsters within.

A few days have passed since Nunnally was rescued from the fake Zero.
Although she is feeling better now thanks to some medicine, her health is deteriorating quickly from the effects of the virus.
One day, Suzaku searches the Grandcypher for Lelouch.
Suzaku: C.C., have you seen Lelouch?
C.C.: Hmm? He left earlier this morning... Said something about doing research.
Suzaku: I see.
C.C.: Did you need something? I can let him know you were looking for him.
Suzaku: Don't worry about it... It's nothing important. Thanks, C.C.
C.C.: Yeah? If you say so.
After thanking C.C., Suzaku takes a moment to gather himself and makes his way to the deck.
Suzaku: Sigh... I don't think this could've happened at a worse time.
Suzaku: (I wonder how Euphy's holding up right now. She must be worried sick...)
Thoughts of Princess Euphemia, the woman he had recently sworn to protect, occupy Suzaku's mind.
Suzaku: (There are plenty of Britannians out there who were against her having a Japanese knight.)
Suzaku: (That's why I need to return as soon as possible, to be by her side.)
Suzaku: But I still want to help Lelouch and Nunnally...
A sigh escapes Suzaku's lips as he recalls the moment Zero revealed his true identity to him.
Suzaku: (Lelouch became Zero for Nunnally's sake.)
Suzaku: (And leading the Black Knights, he sparked a rebellion against Britannia and killed Prince Clovis...)
Suzaku: (He said he killed the prince because it was a Britannian noble that murdered his mother.)
Suzaku: (So that means he probably suspects Euphy as well...)
Ever since learning that Zero was actually Lelouch, Suzaku has searched for a chance to speak with him directly.
However, recent incidents involving Nunnally have denied him the opportunity for a real conversation.
For Lelouch, who presumes his own royal Britannian siblings were involved in his mother's death, Euphemia is one of the suspects.
However, Suzaku knows that her peace-loving, kindhearted soul would never play a role in such a display of brutality.
Suzaku: (I know Euphy wouldn't do something like that. She just isn't that kind of person.)
Suzaku: (Euphy wants to change the world for Lelouch and Nunnally's sake too.)
Suzaku: (As long as their goals are the same, she and Lelouch should be able to find a way to cooperate somehow.)
Suzaku: (If they work together, I know they'll be able to realize their ideal world.)
Suzaku: (How can I make that happen?)
Suzaku: Actually... Now's not the time.
Suzaku: Right now I should be focused on doing what I can to save Nunnally.
Rearranging his priorities for now, another sigh escapes him. Just then, the sound of lively conversation approaches his ears.
Vyrn: Hey, it's Suzaku! Whatcha doing here?
Suzaku: Huh? Oh, I was just getting some fresh air.
Suzaku: Are you about to go shopping?
Lyria: Actually, we got a request from Nunnally's doctor.
Lyria: He wanted us to deliver some things to his village.
The doctor in charge of Nunnally's care lives in a small mining village far from the city.
In order to keep his clinic stocked, he regularly travels to the city, hiring skyfarers to help him transport the large volume of goods.
Lyria: Since he's tending to Nunnally full-time for now, we'll be in charge of getting his supplies instead.
Vyrn: And it's a doozy of an order! We're actually goin' around looking for helpers right now.
Suzaku: Understood. In that case, allow me to offer some help.
Suzaku: The Lancelot should be able to transport a substantial amount of supplies in a single go. How about it?
Lyria: Really? That'll be a huge help!
Vyrn: If you're in, then let's get going!
With Suzaku's help, the crew is able to safely deliver the goods to the mining village.
Villager 1: Easy... does it...
Villager 1: Phew. And that should do it. Really 'preciate the help, y'all!
Lyria: Yay! I think that's another job done!
Vyrn: Thanks a bunch, Suzaku! You made this a real cinch!
Suzaku: Don't even mention it. Just glad I could help.
Villager 1: What a handy machine you've got there... With that thing, we could transport all them heavy minerals to the village in one shot.
The villager looks up at the towering figure of the Lancelot standing behind the crew.
Villager 1: How about it, sonny? Think you could help us out at the mine?
Suzaku: What? Well...
Vyrn: Hey lady, don't go takin' advantage of his kindness now...
Villager 1: Ahaha! I'm just teasin'!
Lyria: Whoaaa! A-an earthquake!
As the ground below begins trembling violently, (Captain) crouches down and takes hold of Lyria to steady her.
After a few minutes, the earthquake finally subsides. Everyone takes a moment to catch their breath.
Villager 2: H-hey! Look over there!
The villagers point toward the forest, where smoke can be seen rising from the trees.
Villager 1: D-did the earthquake cause the mine to collapse on itself?
Villager 2: Dear heavens! What about the miners inside?
  1. We've got to go save them!

Choose: We've got to go save them!
Suzaku: Agreed. There could be people stuck in the tunnels with no way out.
Suzaku: Come on, you guys! (Captain), keep them close to you!
Suzaku boards the Lancelot as he calls out to the captain. (Captain) responds with a resolute nod and takes Lyria and Vyrn under both arms.
Suzaku then picks up the trio using the Lancelot's hand.
Suzaku: Be careful not to fall, you guys. Hold on tight!
Lyria: O-okay!
(Captain) makes sure to hold on to the Lancelot with a steadfast grip as Suzaku begins to move.
Tunnel Monster: Grr...
Escaped Miner: Eeep! S-somebody, anybody!
The earthquake seems to have brought forth monsters from deep within the mines, who begin attacking the miners on sight.
Tunnel Monster: ...!
(Captain) and the others leap from the Lancelot, landing below to counter the monsters.
Suzaku: Are you okay? Leave this to us and get to the village!
Tunnel Monster: Groooar!
Suzaku has his hands full in diverting the monsters, which appear one after another to chase the escaping miners.
Suzaku: I'll take care of the monsters here, (Captain)! You handle the ones going after the miners!
Without a moment's hesitation, (Captain) jumps into the fray.
Tunnel Monster: Groooar!
The monsters before Suzaku are blown away by a massive kick from the Lancelot before they can group with the others.
Suzaku: Not another step! Your fight is with me!

A Vow under the Night Sky: Scene 2

After clearing the area of monsters, Suzaku and the crew venture deeper into the mines to rescue the remaining miners. But when the ground beneath (Captain) and Lyria collapses, Suzaku jumps in after them.

After clearing out the monsters, the crew hears that some miners are still stuck inside.
The Lancelot is too large to enter the mine, so the crew entrusts it to the rescued miners before returning to the tunnels in search of those still trapped.
Tunnel Monster: Groourgh!
Dusty Miner: Th-thank you so much!
Lyria: Is everybody okay?
Tough Miner: Y-yeah... Thanks to you guys!
Vyrn: Wuh! Another earthquake?
Suzaku: Hurry, everyone! Before another big one hits!
Lyria: O-okay!
(Captain) and the crew quickly make their way toward the exit.
Vyrn: There it is! It's the exit!
Suzaku: Oh no...
Just before they can make it out, another aftershock knocks everyone off balance.
Lyria: Eek!
  1. Lyria!

Choose: Lyria!
(Captain) helps Lyria back up on her feet.
However, the ground under them suddenly gives out, and they both fall beneath the surface.
Suzaku: (Captain), Lyria!
Suzaku immediately jumps down, following (Captain) and Lyria into the pits below.
Lyria: Suzaku! Why?
Suzaku: Don't let go—no matter what! Got it?
Able to grab hold of the two, Suzaku leaps along the falling rocks until they land on solid ground once again.
The three find themselves in a wide space underground.
Suzaku: Ugh...
As soon as Suzaku lets go of (Captain) and Lyria, he falls down to his knees.
His bloodied clothing hints at the injuries he sustained in shielding Lyria and (Captain) from falling debris.
Lyria: Oh no... You hurt yourself protecting us...
Suzaku: Don't worry about me. It's just some scrapes.
Suzaku: More importantly, are you guys hurt?
Lyria: We're fine, thanks to you!
  1. You really saved us up there.
  2. I thought I was gonna die.

Choose: You really saved us up there.
Lyria: If you weren't there to save us, we might've gotten squashed.
Suzaku: No one could've thought the foundation beneath us would fall apart. It must've been weakened from the earthquake.

Choose: I thought I was gonna die.
Lyria: Ngh... It's all because I slipped.
Suzaku: That wasn't your fault. No one could've expected the foundation to give out like that.
Continue 1
Suzaku: Anyway, I'm just glad to see you're both okay.
Suzaku's gentle smile brightens the otherwise dark room.
Suzaku: Now then... I think we should start looking for a way out.
Suzaku: The tunnels above seem stable, but who knows when they might fall apart.
Searching his surroundings, Suzaku suddenly feels the touch of a gentle breeze.
Suzaku: There's some wind coming in from over there. That might just be our ticket out.
Lyria: Really? Let's go take a look!
Suzaku: Yeah. But be careful—there could be more monsters that way.
Lyria: Got it!
The trio begins traversing the darkness, trusting in the wind to guide them to freedom.

A Vow under the Night Sky: Scene 3

As (Captain) and the others search for an exit, Suzaku reveals his qualms concerning Lelouch and Princess Euphemia. Their clashing ideologies and opposing positions would likely lead to them fighting again, but Suzaku wishes they would try working together. Lyria and (Captain) convince Suzaku to open up to Lelouch while he has the chance.

Following the whisper of an elusive breeze, the trio searches the underground cavern for an exit.
They continue fumbling their way down a path partially buried in rocks and debris.
Lyria: Oh no... It looks like this path is blocked off too.
Lyria: Do you think it was destroyed by the earthquake earlier?
Suzaku: By the look of things, I'd say this area caved in a long time ago, leading the tunnel to be abandoned.
Suzaku: The tools here are all rusted, and this rubble doesn't look fresh.
Lyria: Does that mean that the exit ahead is also blocked off?
Suzaku: I wouldn't go that far. There's still a breeze coming in from outside, so I'm sure there's a way out.
Suzaku: As long as we track where it's coming from, we'll find our exit.
Clinging to a faint hope, they continue down the winding path for what seems like forever.
Lyria: Whoops!
Lyria trips over a rock, but (Captain) reacts in time to catch her mid-fall.
Lyria: Th-thank you, (Captain).
(Captain) gives Lyria a smile and takes her by the hand to keep her safe.
Lyria: Ehehe... Your hand's so warm—just holding it is enough to be encouraging!
Suzaku: Hehe.
Lyria: What is it, Suzaku?
Suzaku: It's nothing... Just felt nostalgic for a moment.
Suzaku: Seeing you two reminded me of when Lelouch and Nunnally were little.
Lyria: Have you known Lelouch for that long?
Suzaku: Yeah. Probably around eight years now... I've been friends with him and Nunnally since we were all just kids.
Suzaku: But due to our circumstances, we've been separated up until recently.
Suzaku: Back when we were kids, we used to fight at the drop of a hat every time we saw each other.
Suzaku's face is glossed over with nostalgia as he begins reminiscing.
He explains that there were things he and Lelouch couldn't stand about each other, so they'd always end up fighting.
But thanks to Nunnally, they bonded and were able to grow their friendship.
In the midst of all their fighting and making up, Suzaku realized Lelouch had become an irreplaceable friend.
Suzaku: When the two of us work together, there isn't anything we can't achieve.
Lyria: Hehe. It sounds like you really put your trust in him.
Suzaku: Yeah. He was my first friend, and I was his.
Suzaku: And even after everything that's happened, he's... he's still my dearest friend.
A faint sadness clouds his expression for a moment, and (Captain) and Lyria are quick to notice.
Lyria: Did something happen?
Suzaku: Oh... No, nothing to worry about.
Lyria: Hmm... That's not a face that says there's nothing to worry about.
Suzaku: Haha... Am I really that easy to read? I guess there's no fooling you guys.
Suzaku: But you're right... It's not like Lelouch and I are fighting or anything, but there's been something weighing on my mind.
Suzaku goes silent in thought for a while as he struggles to find the right words.
Suzaku: As a knight, there's an important person I've sworn to protect.
Lyria: An important person?
Suzaku: Yeah. Euphy, er, Princess Euphemia. She's a kindhearted soul who wants world peace more than anyone else.
Suzaku: She's saved me so many times—not only my life, but my heart as well.
Suzaku: That's why I want to protect her. I want to support her. I want to build the world that she dreams of.
Suzaku: But...
Sadness clouds his expression once again as he lets out a sigh.
Suzaku: Lelouch... I don't think he trusts her.
Lyria: Lelouch? But why?
Suzaku: The person who killed Lelouch and Nunnally's mother is supposedly a member of the imperial family.
Suzaku: That's why if we return to our world, he'll likely continue fighting as Zero to complete his own objectives.
Suzaku: Even against the entire world. Including Euphy.
Suzaku: And if that happens, I'll have to fight Zero as Euphy's knight—just like I did before.
Lyria: Oh, no! Having to fight even though you're friends... That's awful!
Suzaku: Of course for now, I can be a true friend and help Lelouch for Nunnally's sake.
Suzaku: However, that might only last while we're in this world together.
Lyria: If you went back to your original world, would you end up fighting again? Against Lelouch?
Suzaku: Yeah... It's likely.
Suzaku: But... I can't say I approve of Zero's methods, using any means at his disposal to realize his goals. There's no doubt it would lead to unnecessary sacrifices.
Suzaku: However, I know now that Zero's true identity is Lelouch.
Suzaku: Knowing his true intentions, I think there's another way we could resolve things.
Suzaku: Although their methods are different, he and Euphy both desire a peaceful world.
Suzaku: If they could just work together, I know they'd be capable of achieving their goals.
Suzaku: They could create a world where Japan and Britannia could coexist, and not through violent or forceful means. A world where Nunnally could live peacefully.
Suzaku: I know it could be a reality...
Suzaku: Sorry... I'm just rambling now. The only person who knows what Lelouch thinks would be the man himself.
Lyria: Suzaku...
Lyria's expression suddenly brightens as she has an epiphany.
Lyria: Let's go talk to him now!
Suzaku: Huh?
Lyria: About trusting in Euphy... and about working together...
Lyria: About everything that's been on your mind—let's get it all out of you!
Lyria: If you just tell him sincerely, I'm sure Lelouch will understand!
Suzaku: Yeah, but... Right now we need to focus on saving Nunnally.
  1. You'll regret it when you're too late.

Choose: You'll regret it when you're too late.
Suzaku: ...!
Lyria: That's right! If you never say anything, you'll really come to regret it if you lose your chance!
Lyria: There's no better way to resolve this than by just being honest!
Lyria: And we... we don't want to see you upset either, Suzaku.
Suzaku: (Captain), Lyria...
Taking their words to heart, Suzaku clenches his fist and reflects.
Suzaku: (They're right... I'm just making excuses to keep running from what's in front of me.)
Suzaku: (It's more important now than ever to talk to him—to resolve the problems that lie before us today... and tomorrow.)
Suzaku: Thanks. I've realized now what I have to do.
Suzaku: I'll talk to him. I need to have a talk with Lelouch now more than ever.
Lyria: Suzaku!
Suzaku: Once we get out of here, I'll have a heart-to-heart with him, no matter what it takes.
Lyria: Okay! But first, we'd better find that exit!
Suzaku: Yeah, you said it!
Thanks to (Captain) and Lyria's encouragement, Suzaku gains some clarity and musters the determination to talk with Lelouch.
In order to do so, he'll first need to find a way out. Guided by a distant wind, the group continues to navigate the underground tunnels.

A Vow under the Night Sky: Scene 4

Upon receiving a tip from Vyrn, Lelouch rescues Suzaku and the others just in time before the entire mine collapses. Later that night, Suzaku calls Lelouch to the Grandcypher deck to openly discuss what's on his mind, and the two find common ground on a potentially peaceful solution for both Japan and Britannia.

Making their way through the underground, (Captain) and the others follow the wind and finally find themselves where the exit should be.
Lyria: Aw... Another dead end.
Suzaku: The exit... It's been buried too.
Suzaku investigates the massive pile of rocks and debris that have blocked off the exit, and in looking up notices a hole near the ceiling.
Suzaku: So that's what happened... The structure above must've collapsed, and that's where the wind was coming from.
Lyria: I don't think we'll be able to get all the way up there on our own...
Without anything to climb with, they might as well be caved in.
As if to taunt them, the silhouette of a tree sways against the backdrop of a distant blue sky.
Suzaku: I don't think we'd be able to move the rocks here on our own.
Lyria: If I summoned a primal beast, we'd risk destroying everything here...
Lyria: Eeyah! Another earthquake?
Suzaku: Guys, get down!
Suzaku uses his body to cover (Captain) and Lyria from the deluge of rocks.
Suzaku: (The rocks will bury us alive for real at this rate! We have to get out of here soon... but how?)
While searching for a way to get out, his attention is drawn to another sound.
Suzaku: The rocks... They're moving?
Suzaku keeps his eyes on the wall, where rocks continue shifting suspiciously.
Suzaku: What the!
A thunderous noise is followed by sunlight pouring into the darkness. (Captain) and the others instinctively shut their eyes in reaction.
Lelouch: Suzaku! Are you okay?
Suzaku: Lelouch! You came here to save us?
Suzaku can hardly believe his eyes as the Gawain lifts an enormous rock to reveal Lelouch standing outside, peering into the tunnel.
Lelouch: I'll explain later! Hurry up and get out of there!
Suzaku: R-right.
Suzaku: Come on, you guys!
(Captain) and company sprint toward the exit on shaky legs.
The group has barely made it out of the tunnel when it collapses on itself mere moments later.
Lyria: Pant... Pant... That was a close one...
Vyrn: (Captain)! Lyria! You're both okay!
Lyria: Vyrn!
(Captain) gives Vyrn a great big hug to assure him that everything is okay.
C.C.: Seems we made it in the nick of time.
Lelouch: Indeed. I'm thankful the Gawain has flight capabilities.
Suzaku: C.C. is here too... What are you guys doing all the way out here?
Lelouch: About that, actually...
Around the time (Captain) and the others become trapped in the mines, Lelouch has just finished collecting data on the enemy.
He's back to nursing Nunnally at her bedside when C.C. and the others interrupt with dire news.
C.C.: Shake a leg, Lelouch. We need to head out soon.
Vyrn: Guys! They're in big trouble!
Vyrn frantically explains that (Captain) and the others have gotten involved in a mining accident.
Lelouch: But I...
Nunnally: Cough, cough...
Lelouch feels obligated to stay by his sister as she fights the virus.
However, before he can say anything else, Nunnally takes his hand into her own.
Nunnally: Don't worry about me, Big Brother... I'll be fine. You need to go help Suzaku... and the others too.
Lelouch: ...
Lelouch: Okay. I understand.
Suzaku: Nunnally, huh... I'm thankful you both came for us.
Lyria: By the way... How did you know exactly where we'd be?
Lelouch: That wasn't too difficult. The miners outside showed me a map of the tunnelways.
Lelouch: Based on where the ground collapsed, you should've landed somewhere in the abandoned mine workings.
Lelouch: There are many entrances to the old workings, but only a few accessible from where you were.
Lyria: Wow! That's amazing you knew that just by looking at a map!
Suzaku: But what if we weren't able to find the exit?
Lelouch: I didn't need to worry about that.
Lelouch: One way or another, I knew you'd make it eventually.
Suzaku: Lelouch...
Suzaku: Haha. Always one step ahead, huh?
Happy to be safe and sound, (Captain) and the others successfully bring the miners back to the village before returning to the Grandcypher.
After tending to his wounds, Suzaku invites Lelouch onto the deck of the Grandcypher.
Suzaku: Lelouch... Thanks for coming on such short notice.
Lelouch: "Let's talk in the attic."
I didn't expect for you to use the signal.
For a while, neither party says a word.
Lyria: About trusting in Euphy... and about working together...
Lyria: About everything that's been on your mind—let's get it all out of you!
Lyria: If you just tell him sincerely, I'm sure Lelouch will understand!
Gathering his resolve, Suzaku is the first to break the silence.
Suzaku: You said that you became Zero... for Nunnally's sake.
Lelouch: That's right—to create a world where Nunnally can live in peace.
Suzaku: And the reason that you killed Prince Clovis was in order to find the person responsible for killing your mother...
Suzaku: So what do you... What does Zero think of Euphy? Does he suspect her as well?
Lelouch: ...
Lelouch: When we were on Kamine Island, I spoke with her...
Lelouch: Not as Zero, but as Lelouch.
Lelouch: Euphy was the same as always. The kind and gentle soul who used to look up at the night sky with me when we were young.
Suzaku: Then why would you—
Lelouch: However! Clovis... He told me that Cornelia was aware of my mother's death.
Lelouch: Until I question Cornelia for the truth myself, my quest for revenge will not end.
Suzaku: Lelouch...
Suzaku: I realized something after talking with (Captain) and Lyria—
Suzaku: I don't want to have any regrets. I don't want to disappoint Nunnally. I don't want to lose my precious friend.
Suzaku: We both have views that we won't budge on. But I don't want to think there isn't a bridge out there somewhere that we can cross together.
Suzaku: Surely one exists... A way to make everyone happy, without resorting to violence.
Suzaku: That's why I want you to talk to Euphy yourself.
Lelouch: Suzaku... I'm glad to hear you say that. I'm sure Euphy cares about the fate of Japan as well.
Lelouch: However, in this scenario Zero and the Black Knights would be willingly backing down against Britannia.
Lelouch: Do you think the people of Japan would so easily accept it? Would it snuff out their burning hatred of Britannia?
Lelouch: It's true that I used the plight of the Japanese people to work for my own revenge.
Lelouch: However, the desire of the Japanese people to be free from Britannia is unshakeable.
Lelouch: And to that end, I cannot do a thing by myself.
Suzaku: ...!
Suzaku: (So Lelouch has also been waiting for me to do something.)
Suzaku: For us to carry the burden together... I'll need to have the courage to face my past.
Lelouch: That's right.
Lelouch: This rebellion... It can no longer be stopped by merely Zero or Euphy.
Lelouch: Another important piece is missing—perhaps the son of the last prime minister of Japan, Suzaku Kururugi.
Suzaku: The knight of a Britannian princess. The traitorous son of the last prime minister of Japan.
Lelouch: Traitorous, you say? Still, there's a role that only you yourself can fill.
Suzaku: Be the link to connect Britannia and Japan.
Lelouch: Exactly. Something that you, deemed a traitor by dissenters from both sides, can do!
Lelouch: Do you think you can bear the burden I carry?
Once again the deck falls into a pregnant silence.
Lelouch: ...
Suzaku: I should've known all along... How can I ask others to carry a burden when I can't even play my part?
Suzaku: It's clear to me now, Lelouch. I can't keep running from my past forever. That's why I need your help.
Suzaku: In order to realize a better world.
Suzaku's gaze is as unwavering as his sincerity.
Lelouch: Heh... Very well then. It's a deal.
Suzaku: Do you mean it?
Lelouch: You, me, and Euphy. But we can't stop there. We'll need even more strength.
Lelouch: Strength to create a better world—one where everyone can live in peace and harmony.
Suzaku: It's a plan. I'm glad we've come to an agreement... Let's focus on doing everything we can to save Nunnally first.
Lelouch: Right. I'm counting on you.
Having reached an understanding of one another, Suzaku and Lelouch exchange one last look.
Suzaku: (Euphy... Just wait a little longer.)
Suzaku: (Once I return with Lelouch and Nunnally, we can all talk together.)
Suzaku: (We'll create a gentler world together, the one we all want.)
With a newfound shared vision, the two continue talking into the night—about what has happened so far, and what will happen from now on.
In order to realize their ideal world, no topic is off the table.
