Between Frost and Flame - Opening

Percival awakens from a dream to find intruders in his room and chases them away. The color drains from his face when he reads a letter dropped by the fleeing intruders.

???: Come...
A woman lies in a pool of blood with a look of pain on her face. Her arm stretches out limply from her side.
A child sits beside her, shoulders quivering. He grips the woman's hand tightly.
???: Sniff... Hic...
???: Brothers...
The woman struggles desperately to relay her final message.
???: Love... you...
A cold drop of water dripping down his face rouses Percival.
Percival: Augh!
Percival: Huff... Gasp... Huff... Huff...
His heart is pounding and his sweat-soaked sleepwear clings to his chest with each erratic breath.
Percival: Huff... Gasp... Huff... Huff...
Percival: (Wha?)
Percival suddenly notices that he's not alone.
Percival: Prowlers!
???: Gwah!
Percival uses the full force of his body to slam the intruder up against the wall.
???: Shoot! We've been busted!
Percival: I already know why you're stealing into my chambers in the middle of the night.
Percival: You idiots have a death wish.
???: Eeep!
The prowlers make a hasty getaway knowing they don't stand a chance against Percival.
Percival: Humph, good riddance. They're speedy little buggers...
Percival: Hm? What's this?
Percival picks up a scrap of paper that had dropped to the floor.
Percival: ...!
At that moment (Captain) and the others burst into the room.
Vyrn: Everything all right? What was that loud bang just now?
Lyria: Are you okay, Percival? Did you fall out of bed and hurt yourself?
Percival: There's no cause for worry. It was nothing.
Percival: All of you should get back to bed.
Vyrn: Uh, if you say so.
Lyria: Good night, Percival.
Percival: Night.
The crew members shuffle back to their beds.
Percival: ...
Percival remains awake, staring out into the dark, moonless night.

Between Frost and Flame - Chapter 1: Footsteps of War - Episode 1

Various courses of action are agreed upon during an emergency meeting convened by Lancelot. Percival refuses to take the crew along with him to Wales, causing (Captain) to storm off in anger.

Not much time has passed since Feendrache narrowly escaped imminent ruin.
Lancelot has sent for Vane, Siegfried, Percival, and the crew.
The mood is grave as the knights and the crew listen to Lancelot's briefing.
Lancelot: Shortly after the collapse at the castle, I sent the White Dragons on a massive search for Isabella and Gareth.
Lancelot: We found no trace of them, thus any hopes of extracting information came to an end.
Lancelot: Do you have anything to add at this time, Siegfried?
Siegfried: My investigation tells me the House of Wales has resorted to forbidden arts and spies to intimidate their neighbors.
Siegfried: It's only a matter of time before they try to take Feendrache.
Siegfried: Just one crisis after another. How would you handle this?
Siegfried poses the question as if it were a test. A knowing smile crosses his lips.
The mood harkens back to the old days of teacher and student.
Lancelot: Vane and I will remain in the capital and devise battle preparations.
Vane: You got it, Lancey! It's about to get busy!
Siegfried: I have a prior engagement. I'm afraid I'll be absent for a while.
Lancelot: Understood. We'll take care of things in your absence.
Percival: Hey. At least tell us where you're going, Siegfried.
Siegfried: Heh. Are you my chaperone?
Percival: What?
Siegfried: Just joking. It's not that I don't trust you all.
Siegfried: For now I'd prefer to keep this as confidential as possible. Is that a problem?
Percival: Whatever. Do as you like.
Vane: Hahaha, you're surprisingly overprotective, Percy!
Percival: Ugh... A mongrel like you is trying to mock me?
Vane: Bwah? Where'd you get that idea? I was giving you a compliment!
Lancelot: All right. That's enough, you two.
Lancelot: What are your plans, Percival?
Percival: I...
Percival fumbles for a response.
Lancelot: You're worried about the Wales family, aren't you?
Percival: Lancelot... I am, but—
Lancelot: You aren't bound to us—I mean the capital anymore.
Lancelot: That means you're free to follow your own course. Isn't that right?
Percival: Yeah, that's right. I left the order. I'm a member of the House of Wales through and through.
Lancelot: We know we can trust you. So stop worrying and get going.
Percival: Heh. I owe you one, Lancelot.
Percival: I'll speak with my brother and report back. So until then, if you could just—
Lancelot: I know already! We won't do anything to risk sparking a war.
Vane: Yeah! It's just like Lancey says!
Vane: I've seen enough sadness on people's faces to last me a lifetime. Fixing this without bloodshed would be best!
Percival: Okay. I'll set out for Wales as soon as I'm ready.
Percival: Unless anyone has any objections?
Siegfried: Looks like the decision's been made. Give it your all.
Percival: Naturally.
Vane: Woo! All that talk made me hungry! I say food comes first!
Lancelot: Hehe. Good call, Vane! I'm a little hungry myself.
Lancelot: Dismissed!
The lengthy strategy meeting comes to an end.
(Captain) and the others assume they'll be following Percival as his vassals.
Percival: No. I can't allow that this time.
(Captain), Vyrn, and Lyria immediately protest Percival's unexpected edict.
Vyrn: Hey! Hey! Heeey! Why're you sayin' no all of a sudden?
Vyrn: No matter how dangerous the mission is, you always let us tag along in the end!
Lyria: That's right! What's so different this time?
Lyria: We're your vassals. It's our job to look out for you!
Percival: Whine all you want. It won't change a thing.
Percival: All of you are staying here in the capital!
Percival: Got that? That's an order!
(Captain) gets up and stalks off with a sulky face.
Vyrn: Hey! (Captain)! Wait up!
Lyria: We haven't finished discussing it yet, (Captain)!
Percival: ...
Lyria: Um... Knowing (Captain), it should be okay...
Percival: Yeah...
Lyria: Well, good night.
Percival: Yeah... Good night.
Percival bids (Captain) a bitter farewell.

Between Frost and Flame - Chapter 1: Footsteps of War - Episode 2

Percival makes several rounds before leaving Feendrache. He meets Lancelot at the training grounds, has a chance encounter with Vane, and shares brief words with Siegfried.

Before Percival leaves the capital, he visits the training grounds on the outskirts of the city.
Lancelot: Percival? What brings you out here?
Percival: Humph. I wouldn't forgive myself if something were to happen to the country while I'm away.
Percival: I came to see for myself if all of you were training diligently.
Lancelot: In other words you're worried sick about us. I appreciate it.
Percival: Whatever floats your boat. How about a bit of sparring? It's been a while.
Lancelot: You're on! Let's see what you've got!
Percival now heads into town to make preparations for his trip.
Vane: Hey! Percy!
Percival: Erk... I know that voice...
Vane: So this is where you've been, huh? You really gave me the runaround. I've been looking all over for you!
Percival: Humph. How was I supposed to know that? And while we're at it, you're getting a bit too chummy with me.
Vane: Yeah, yeah, listen. There's a wedding party tonight for one of my men! We're meeting at the central square!
Percival: Didn't I already tell you no?
Vane: Come on, don't be like that. You're not busy, right? I know you can't say no to delicious food, so just come!
Vane: Okay, I've gotta run. See ya!
Percival: Hey! Listen to people when you're being spoken to!
Percival: Argh, that mongrel drives me crazy!
Percival makes a final stop at the castle before he leaves the capital.
Siegfried: Percival.
Percival: Siegfried...
Siegfried: Are you leaving now?
Percival: Yes. And how are your own preparations going?
Siegfried: I'll be departing shortly. His Highness has entrusted me with a matter of great importance.
Percival: I see. I can't say I understand your motives, but watch your back.
Siegfried: Heh. Same to you. Take care.
Siegfried: By the way, shouldn't (Captain) and the others be with you?
Percival: I ordered them to stay behind. Just this once.
Siegfried: I see. That's a pity.
Siegfried: But Percival, (Captain)'s your...
Percival: What?
Siegfried: No, never mind.
Percival: You're a strange man. Well, I must be going now.
Siegfried: Farewell. We'll meet again.
Siegfried: (This is something you'll have to figure out for yourself. It'd be pointless otherwise.)

Between Frost and Flame - Chapter 1: Footsteps of War - Episode 3

As Percival heads to Wales alone, he reflects on how he has changed during his time spent with the crew. (Captain) comes out of nowhere to save Percival from a monster ambush, causing him to reconsider his decision not to bring the crew along.

Percival heads for Wales alone.
Percival: ...
In his solitude he mulls over the events of the past few days.
Percival: Why can't I stop thinking about them...
Percival: (Captain)...
Percival: (Yeah... It's been ages since I've traveled alone like this.)
Percival: Phew...
Percival, who had grown accustomed to his lone wolf lifestyle, laughs bemusedly at his change of heart.
Percival: (It's better this way. No distractions.)
Suddenly a monster attacks from the undergrowth.
Monster: Groaar!
Percival: (Humph. How many weaklings like these have I felled?)
Percival: Too easy.
Percival dispatches the foe with a flash of his blade.
Percival: (But why do I get the feeling...)
Percival: Never mind. I must push on.
Percival takes a few steps forward.
Monster: Groaar!
Percival: ...!
Before the monster can reach Percival, (Captain) appears and slays the monster.
???: Hey, slow down a little!
Lyria: Percival! I know you said no, but please let us come with you!
Percival: (Captain)...
(Captain) stands in front of Percival, blocking his way.
  1. We're worried for your safety, my lord.
  2. We're coming. Captain's orders.

Choose: We're worried for your safety, my lord.
(Captain) kneels before Percival in jest.
Percival: Heh. Fool.
Percival: I suppose I would lose face if I were to refuse you now.
Percival: Very well. I'll make a special concession this time and allow you to come, (Captain).

Choose: We're coming. Captain's orders.
(Captain) stares down Percival as if to say just try me.
Percival: Oh? Are you challenging me to a fight if I refuse?
Sparks fly between (Captain) and Percival.
Percival: Pfft... Bwahaha! How amusing! Only you could get away with that, (Captain).
Percival: I concede. Lend me your sword.
Continue 1
Vyrn: Took you long enough to come to your senses...
Lyria: Teehee. I'm glad you two made up.
Vyrn: Say, Sir Burnsalot, aren't you traveling kind of light?
Percival: Not at all. It suits my purpose to slip in unnoticed.
Percival: Well, you don't need to know the details. Come, my vassals!
Lyria: Yeah!
Percival takes the lead, guiding the crew toward Wales.

Between Frost and Flame - Chapter 1: Footsteps of War - Episode 4

A man sits on a throne as his messenger reports that the man's younger brother has just left for Wales. After the messenger leaves, the man has a brusque conversation with a suspicious, shadowy figure.

An icy chill pervades every inch of the castle.
An attendant rushes before the throne.
Attendant: The message was delivered safely to your brother. He has left Feendrache.
???: I see. You may leave.
Attendant: Yes, Your Highness.
An ominous shadow rises from behind the king once the attendant is gone.
???: Well? Is everything going according to plan?
???: Indeed. Very smoothly.
???: Heh heh heh! Who would have thought there'd be others that share your bloodline...
???: And why is that amusing?
???: Isn't it obvious? You are beyond any other normal person.
???: Yet you are no different from ordinary people in your attachment to family.
???: Hah. And what of it?
???: Stay your indignation. I offer my apologies if I have upset you.
???: But the time is nigh. We can ill afford to neglect preparations.
???: I know.

Between Frost and Flame - Chapter 2: The Lord of Flames Returns - Episode 1

Percival assures the crew that his older brother is a noble man who would never invade other countries. Before he can finish his thoughts, Percival notices smoke rising nearby and hurries over to investigate.

Percival and the crew are back on the road heading for Wales.
Percival: The extent of your stubbornness never ceases to amaze me.
Lyria: (Ahaha, look who's talking!)
Vyrn: Geez, is it really that hard for you to introduce us to your family?
Percival: No, that's not it at all.
Lyria: Then why?
Percival: I can generally get out of any predicament if I act alone.
Percival: But my judgment tells me this unpredictable tension between kingdoms presents a danger to each and every one of you.
Vyrn: You should've just told us if it was buggin' you that much.
Percival: I apologize for keeping you in the dark. I was wrong.
Percival: When I heard what my brother was doing, I didn't have a moment to spare.
Lyria: What is your brother like anyway, Percival?
Percival: He's an extremely noble man of great character who deserves the respect he commands.
Percival: That's why I want to have an objective conversation with him directly.
Vyrn: Yeah, that's probably for the best!
Percival: Huh?
Lyria: What's wrong?
Percival: There's smoke rising from over there. Let's go, (Captain)!

Between Frost and Flame - Chapter 2: The Lord of Flames Returns - Episode 2

The smoke leads the crew to a village being raided by displaced farmers turned bandits. Incensed, Percival and company decide to put a stop to it.

When the party approaches the source of the smoke, they find villagers under attack by bandits.
Bandit: Listen, just hand over any grub you got!
Villager: Please, please don't take our food! We have almost nothing left. We'll die of starvation at this rate!
Bandit: Shut up! What d'ya think happened to us, huh? Our village was pillaged too.
Bandit: It's every man for himself now! We're only doing what was done to us!
Percival: Hey, you there. I don't care how bad you've got it. I won't overlook thievery.
Percival: Leave these people alone and go back whence you came.
Bandit: Oh yeah? What's it to you?
Percival: I didn't want it to come to this, but you leave me no choice.
Percival: (Captain), make sure the villagers are safe.
Lyria: We'll look after them, don't worry!
Vyrn: Here we go, (Captain)!

Between Frost and Flame - Chapter 2: The Lord of Flames Returns - Episode 3

The crew is granted room and board at the village as thanks for driving away the bandits. Percival continues telling the crew about his brothers, Aglovale and Lamorak—eldest and second eldest respectively.

The villagers thank the crew for fending off the bandits.
Percival: They didn't seem very experienced in battle.
Villager: No, I suspect they're just villagers like us who turned to looting because of the war.
Percival: I see.
Villager: We don't know if we should to take refuge under King Carl of Feendrache...
Villager: Or if we'd be better off with Aglovale of Wales.
Percival: It seems we've put you in an impossible position...
Villager: Sorry?
Percival: Excuse me. I was just talking to myself.
Villager: I tell you what, why don't y'all stay for the night? We'd be glad to put you up.
Lyria: Really? That would be wonderful!
Villager: It's the least we can do. We can't offer you much, but I'd wager it's better than sleeping in the fields.
Vyrn: You bet it is! Bring on the beds!
Percival: Thank you for the hospitality.
Percival tells the crew about the Wales brothers while staying at the village inn.
Aglovale is the eldest followed by Lamorak.
Percival: Well, it's getting late. You should all go to bed now.
Lyria: Yawn... Okay. Have a good night.
Vyrn: Yeah, see you in the morning!
Percival: Yes, we should reach the castle by tomorrow. Rest well for what's to come.
(Captain) says good night to Percival and turns to leave.
Percival: Tell me, where do you get your strength from?
Percival can't hide his amusement at the sight of (Captain)'s baffled expression.
Percival: Never mind. Go get some sleep. Good night.

Between Frost and Flame - Chapter 2: The Lord of Flames Returns - Episode 4

In another memory, a young woman enjoys a day in the strawberry fields with her three boys, explaining to them the significance behind the red fruits. The boys promise to live in accordance to their mother's wishes, and the picturesque family walks off into the dusky night.

???: Look at this strawberry, Mama!
???: See how red and ripe it is? It's too pretty to eat!
???: Hehehe... Why, it certainly is a pleasant shade of red. You deserve the award for most beautiful strawberry!
???: Mother! Look at these!
???: These must be the biggest strawberries in the whole field!
???: Oh my, those are enormous! You did well to find them. You get the award for biggest strawberries!
???: Make way for the champion of justice, Strawberry Man!
???: The gods may turn a blind eye to your evil deeds, but Strawberry Man never will!
???: Strawberry Man, my hero! No one is cooler than you! Of course that means you get the award for coolest strawberry!
The woman giggles as her three young boys vie for her attention.
Despite her frail body she laughs as if she's on top of the world.
???: Say you three, do you know what strawberries symbolize?
???: Uh-uh!
???: I do not!
???: Nooope!
???: Then your dear mother will tell you.
???: Strawberries symbolize love and respect—a life of virtue and a happy home. They're wonderful, don't you think?
???: Yes, they really are wonderful.
???: Very nice!
???: Wow. That's cool.
???: It's my wish that you three live for the happiness of the ones you hold dear.
???: I want you all to live a life of constant peace.
An indescribable feeling washes over the brothers as they gaze at their mother's soft smile.
???: I swear I'll make you proud, Mother.
???: I promise too!
???: I'm gonna be Strawberry Man when I grow up!
???: No you're not! I am!
???: Geez, are you two even taking Mother's words seriously?
???: Heehee. It's all right, Aglovale. As long as you all live on happily, then all my wishes will have been granted.
???: Oh, the sun's gone down. I think we'd best be getting home now.
???: Okay.
???: Let's go!
???: Yeah!
The three boys grab hold of their mother.
???: Hehe. Now then, what do you want for dinner tonight?
The picturesque family walks off into the dusky night.

Between Frost and Flame - Chapter 3: Aglovale, Lord of Frost - Episode 1

(Captain) and Percival finally arrive in Wales. All the dark rumors they had heard about the Wales family appear to be false, judging from the townspeople's lively demeanor.

(Captain) and company arrive in the town surrounding Wales Castle.
Contrary to the negative gossip regarding the House of Wales, the town appears to be thriving.
The crew is relieved to see the sensibility in Aglovale's governing style.
Townsman: This war is bringing in good business!
Townswoman: And thanks to Aglovale's wise decisions, we can sleep with peace of mind!
Townsman: You said it! A bigger kingdom benefits us all!
Percival: ...
Vyrn: Hey, what gives? Everyone's living in bliss!
Lyria: I know! They all seem to love Aglovale!
Percival: Yes... Let's keep going.
Percival and the crew continue on the road leading to the castle.

Between Frost and Flame - Chapter 3: Aglovale, Lord of Frost - Episode 2

Percival attempts to enter the throne room of Wales Castle, but a castle guard refuses entrance to the crew, citing strict rules. Aglovale personally resolves the issue, and that's how the crew comes to meet Aglovale for the first time.

As soon as Percival comes into view, the castle servants bow their heads in respect.
Servant: Welcome back, Lord Percival.
Percival: Thank you. Where is my brother?
Servant: His Highness is in the throne room, sire.
Percival: Very good.
Vyrn: Wow! Seeing how everyone treats him like royalty reminds me of how important he is!
Lyria: How could you forget, Vyrn? Percival's always had that kind of status.
Percival: Huh? Hey, what are you two mumbling about?
Lyria: Ah, w-we were just admiring the armor and all these portraits!
Vyrn: So this is what it's like to be rich!
Percival: Don't go wandering off.
Percival: You too, (Captain). You're not a tourist. Stick close to me.
Lyria: Wah! I'm right behind you, Percival!
Vyrn: Hey, don't leave me behind!
The party arrives at the door to the throne room.
A guard steps in front of them before they can enter.
Percival: What are you doing?
Guard: Attendants are not allowed beyond this point, Lord Percival.
Percival: (Captain) is my loyal adviser. Are you questioning the trustworthiness of my vassals?
Guard: Erk! No, my lord, but those are my orders! If they wouldn't mind waiting in another room—
???: Enough. Let them in.
Guard: Your Highness! Yes, at once!
Percival: Pardon me.
Percival and the others enter the room where Aglovale is waiting for them.
Percival: I've just arrived, Brother.
Aglovale: It's been a while, Percival. The last time was at Father's funeral, wasn't it? You've done well to come back.
Percival: Indeed, it has been too long. Forgive me.
Aglovale: No matter. It's good enough to see your face after all this time.
Aglovale: And are these your attendants?
Percival: Yes. I'm proud to call them my vassals.
Lyria: It's an honor to meet you, Your Highness. I'm Lyria. Your brother has taken very good care of us!
Vyrn: Call me Vyrn!
Percival: They're skyfarers under (Captain). I owe them all a great deal.
(Captain) greets Aglovale.
Aglovale: Well, well. So your vassals are skyfarers...
Aglovale: You and your crew have shown great kindness to my brother. Make yourselves at home.
Aglovale: Now, I believe we can discuss other matters later...
Percival: Yes.
Before he leaves, Aglovale abruptly turns back to face the party.
Aglovale: Ah, one more thing. Your vassals are welcome to join me for tonight's banquet.
Lyria: We can? Yay! Oh, thank you!
Vyrn: Sweet! Good grub and plenty of it!
(Captain) meets Aglovale's gaze and nods.
Aglovale: Heh. Until then.
Aglovale's lips twist into a slight smile as he leaves.

Between Frost and Flame - Chapter 3: Aglovale, Lord of Frost - Episode 3

Percival's uncertainties about reuniting with his brother are slightly alleviated by (Captain)'s concern for Percival. Meanwhile Siegfried heads to a small kingdom on a mission of his own.

(Captain) and company de-stress in their guest chambers.
Lyria: I can't wait to see what kind of a feast we're being treated to. Can you?
Vyrn: Nope! Just think of all the delicious things we've never even seen before!
Percival: ...
(Captain) notices Percival's preoccupation with something.
Percival: No, it's nothing. Don't worry.
(Captain) asks if it's about Aglovale.
Percival: Yeah... Actually, seeing my brother again has left me uncertain...
Lyria: But surely it's just a misunderstanding, don't you think? The townspeople were laughing and smiling.
Vyrn: I think so too! They wouldn't be acting like that if Aglovale really was a bad guy!
Percival: I suppose you're right. I must believe in my brother.
Percival: Heh, getting a pep talk from you guys puts me to shame.
Percival gazes out of the castle window at the town below with a soft smile.
Meanwhile Siegfried is visiting a small kingdom in the mountains.
Siegfried: (If what I've read is true, this will be the moment of truth...)
Siegfried: (I don't know how much weight my name carries, but this will call for the performance of a lifetime.)
With a document in his hand, Siegfried calmly draws closer to his destination.

Between Frost and Flame - Chapter 3: Aglovale, Lord of Frost - Episode 4

Everyone is enjoying dinner with Aglovale when Percival brings up the rumors of Wales plotting to conquer Feendrache. Aglovale, believing he is right to invade, admits to the conspiracy, forcing Percival and the crew to beat a hasty retreat from Wales.

Aglovale, Percival, and the crew sit around a grand table exchanging small talk.
Aglovale: Hahahaha! Fate must have brought your crew and my little brother together, no?
Vyrn: Oh yeah, you shoulda seen this hoity-toity guy when we first met. Percival's all, like, I'll definitely make you my vassals!
Lyria: Well, Percival can be a little proud sometimes, but he's always dependable!
Lyria: We visited a coastal town once, and he helped everyone out! They all wanted to become his vassals!
Lyria: And he's kind to animals too! I really admire him!
Aglovale: Is that so? Well, that's what I like to hear.
(Captain) starts to recount another amusing episode from their travels together.
Aglovale: Now this feels like a good one. Don't spare the details!
Percival: Brother, please, that's enough frivolity for one evening.
Percival: (Come on, (Captain), don't get carried away! I shouldn't have to say it!)
Aglovale: Hahaha, you're right. If this evening gets any livelier, who knows where it'll end up. Let's call it a night.
Aglovale: (Captain), you and your friends are welcome to stay in Wales for as long as you like.
The enjoyable feast dispels any uneasiness the crew had been feeling earlier.
Lyria: That's very kind of you, but we have to get back to Feendrache...
Vyrn: Yeah, we gotta tell the White Dragons what a nice guy Percival's brother really is!
Aglovale: The White Dragons of Feendrache?
Percival notices that Aglovale's expression has changed and pounces on the chance.
Percival: Brother, people are whispering that the House of Wales secretly plotted the recent invasion of Feendrache.
Percival: Is there any truth to that?
Aglovale turns serious.
Aglovale: Yes. It's true.
Percival: What?
Aglovale: Pfft! Fwahahaha! Come, don't look at me like that, Brother!
Aglovale: Honestly, calling it a secret plot sullies my reputation. Justice only becomes evil when you're on the wrong side of it.
Aglovale: Of course it pains me to be at war, but it's a necessary evil.
Aglovale: A sacrifice we have to make in order to secure true peace for the world.
Aglovale: You understand that I must control Feendrache for that purpose, don't you?
Percival: I accept that kingdoms fight, but sacrificing innocents is not like you, Brother.
Aglovale: Humph. You always were soft, Percival.
Aglovale: Do you really think we can attain peace without sacrifices? Without bloodshed?
Percival: I...
Aglovale: Your indecisiveness doesn't surprise me given how you've served Feendrache in the past.
Aglovale: But you and I both know they'll never agree to an unconditional surrender.
Percival: ...
Aglovale: Percival. We vowed to change the world that day, didn't we?
Aglovale: That's the sole reason why I summoned you back here. Join me, Percival.
Aglovale: With Lamorak, we three brothers can create a new empire.
Percival: Brother... I...
Aglovale: Fine. I'll show you I'm not just spouting empty dreams. Follow me.
Aglovale: I'd like (Captain), Lyria, and Vyrn to come along as well. I've grown fond of you all.
Lyria: O-okay...
Vyrn: Well, uh... Don't know what's going on here, but let's just check it out...
Percival: (Captain)...
(Captain) looks squarely into Percival's eyes and gives a little nod.
Aglovale: Good, then it's settled. Let's go.
Aglovale turns and leads the party away.
They are brought to a large, underground chamber beneath the castle.
An enormous, magic circle is drawn on the ground with a pulsating mass hanging above it.
Aglovale: What do you think? This is our family's secret weapon.
Percival: What... what is that thing?
Vyrn: Blecch... It gives me the creeps!
Lyria: I don't have a good feeling about this.
(Captain) points out the similarity between the magic circle and the mark they found on Gareth.
Percival: (Yes, I noticed that too.)
Percival: Aglovale, a few days ago we saw a similar mark on the neck of someone named Gareth.
Percival: And I remember seeing that same symbol in a book from the castle library many years ago.
Percival: What's this all about?
Aglovale: I think you know what this is. That circle is our connection to the Otherworld.
Percival: Ugh... I knew it was tied to the Otherworld...
Aglovale: I gave Gareth a charm that grants the power of the magical circle.
Aglovale: But then that knave sided with Isabella and tried to incite a revolt against me.
Aglovale: Because of that our hunt for dragon nodes has run into delays.
Percival: Dragon nodes? What are you talking about now?
Aglovale: Dragon nodes are pathways that enable energy to be channeled to this magic circle.
Aglovale: By harvesting energy from dragon nodes in different areas, I hope to hatch the key to the Otherworld.
Percival: There's a key?
Aglovale: There is. Once I have it I will open the gate of the Otherworld and connect it with our world.
Aglovale: All nations will crumble under my military superiority, prostrating themselves before our might.
Aglovale: Heh heh heh. Look. Soon the circle will be fully charged, and the key will be mine.
Percival: Enough! Aglovale, this is crazy! Why would you do something so stupid?
Aglovale: Stupid? Don't you see? If I open the gate to the Otherworld, the spirits of the departed will—
(Captain) suddenly barges in between Aglovale and Percival, ready to fight.
Percival: (Captain)?
Vyrn: Snap out of it, Burnsalot! You're not falling for this mumbo-jumbo, are you?
Lyria: You can't let him do this, Percival!
Aglovale: Can't you keep your dogs under control, Percival?
(Captain) looks at Percival and forces him to make a choice.
  1. Are you fine with this?
  2. We've got to stop this right now!

Choose: Are you fine with this?
Percival: I see what you're trying to say...

Choose: We've got to stop this right now!
Percival: Huh? Y-yeah... Yes!
Continue 1
Percival: Thank you, (Captain).
Percival: Brother, I can't let you do this! You've gone too far!
Aglovale: Hmm... You're talking back to me.
Aglovale: Interesting. I haven't felt rage like that in a very long time...
Vyrn: Ugh. Looks like we'll have to force our way out!
Lyria: Percival, what should we do?
Percival: Secure an escape route, (Captain)! Don't even think about anything else!
Aglovale: I think a test is in order, my foolish little brother. Show me how much you've grown.
Aglovale: Frostguards! Attack!

Between Frost and Flame - Chapter 4: Retreat from the Brink - Episode 1

Percival and the crew try their best to lose their pursuers.

Soldier of Wales: Give chase! Get them!
Percival: Are you okay?
Lyria: Huff... Huff... I'm okay!
Vyrn: Argh! They're going to catch us!
Percival and the crew run as fast as they can down the secret passage underneath the castle.
They fend off Aglovale's imperial frostguards as they make their escape.
Aglovale: Hmm... Impressive. They're holding their own.
Percival: Now, vassals! Follow me!
Lyria: Come on, Vyrn, let's go!
Vyrn: Run like the wind!
Aglovale: Don't let them get away! I want them alive!
The soldiers close in on the party.
Soldier of Wales: We've nearly got them!
Percival: Tch... They'll be on us before long.
Percival: (Captain), let's turn back and attack their vanguard!
Lyria: Okay, ready when you are!
Vyrn: Yeah, let's do this!

Between Frost and Flame - Chapter 4: Retreat from the Brink - Episode 2

Soldiers of Wales soon surround the party despite their best efforts to escape. Percival wants to stay behind to stall for time while the crew runs, but (Captain), weapon drawn, stubbornly remains at Percival's side.

Percival and the crew try their best to escape but are soon surrounded.
Percival: Ugh, I knew we couldn't outrun them.
Soldier of Wales: There's nowhere left to run! Drop your weapons and surrender!
Lyria: What do we do, (Captain)?
Percival: I've got this. All of you leave while I see to this rabble.
Vyrn: What? You think we're just gonna leave you here?
Percival: Listen, we've got to split up. It's the best chance we've got.
Lyria: But we can't just run while you're here by yourself!
Soldier of Wales: Aim for the brother! Ignore the others if necessary!
Percival: (Captain), it's me they want. Go now while you've still got the chance.
Percival: Warn everyone about the situation!
But instead of running, (Captain) stands between Percival and the enemy, unflinching in the face of the adversity.
Percival: (Captain)...
Percival: Humph, that's right. You were never one to back down.
Percival: Fine by me. If this is where I should meet my maker, then so be it!
Soldier of Wales: Hah. Admirable, but your situation is hopeless!
Soldier of Wales: Slaughter them all! Leave only the brother alive!
Percival: We're all coming out of this alive, you hear me, (Captain)?

Between Frost and Flame - Chapter 4: Retreat from the Brink - Episode 3

Lancelot and Vane are relieved to see the crew return back to Feendrache. When King Carl learns of Aglovale's plot, he decides to launch an offensive against Wales.

Meanwhile in the throne room of Feendrache.
Vane paces restlessly before King Carl.
Lancelot: Vane, settle down. Stop fidgeting in the king's presence.
Vane: And who's the one who has been staring outside ever since we got here?
Lancelot: What are you talking about?
Vane: You can't fool me. You're acting weirder than usual, looking out the window all the time!
Lancelot: Grrr... It's all in your head. We have to keep our faith that they'll be back.
Lancelot: If (Captain) and the others have managed to catch up with Percival, then there's nothing to worry about.
Vane: I know that, but I've been feeling all tingly today. Maybe it's an omen...
King Carl: Why not go and scout in Wales if you're both so concerned?
Lancelot: Unacceptable! It would be remiss of me to mobilize the order on a whim.
Vane: How about if I just take my unit, then?
Lancelot: The answer is no!
Vane: Tch, of course it's no.
Vane: It's times like these when I hate being in command.
Just then a soldier comes running into the throne room.
Sentry: Sir Percival and his vassals are on their way back to the capital, Your Highness!
The party has a brief rest before going to the throne room.
Lyria: Sorry to make you all worry, but we're okay.
Vyrn: Phew... I can finally relax now.
Percival: Thanks for your assistance, (Captain).
Percival: Your efforts this time have been especially praiseworthy.
The first signs of relief finally appear on (Captain)'s face after being praised by Percival.
King Carl: It's good to see you all back safe and sound. You deserve a good rest.
Vane: Geez... Lyria... Vyrn... Everyone from (Captain) to Percy...
Vane: You all look like you've been through the wringer.
Vane tends to the party's wounds one by one.
Percival: Lancelot, can we get started?
Lancelot: Of course. I take it things didn't go as expected.
Lancelot: Tell me what happened.
Percival: There's no time to lose. Everyone needs to hear this.
Percival shares the details of Aglovale's devious plan.
King Carl: What! So that's what he's been scheming all this time...
Lancelot: Opening the gate to the Otherworld...
Vane: Whoa, whoa, whoa! That's bad news for the entire skydom!
Percival: Exactly. This problem no longer effects our country alone.
Percival: We can all agree that stopping my brother is paramount!
King Carl: Lancelot, Vane... Gather the knights and lead them against Aglovale immediately!
Lancelot: At once!
Vane: Now you're talkin'...
King Carl: Don't let me down, Lancelot. You too, Vane.
Lancelot: Yes, Your Highness! Vane, assemble your knights!
Vane: You got it, Lancey! We're so ready for this! We can move at a moment's notice!
Percival: ...
King Carl's decision is made with surprising speed.
Vyrn: That was... unexpected...
Lyria: Yeah... He's usually more soft and mild-mannered...
King Carl: Humph, what are you blathering about? I have siblings too, you know. I know how it feels.
King Carl: But I never got into a fight with my brothers...
King Carl: Percival. You must stop your brother. Really let him have it if it comes to that.
Percival: I understand, Your Highness.
With time running out, the Order of the White Dragons mobilize against the House of Wales.

Between Frost and Flame - Chapter 4: Retreat from the Brink - Episode 4

Lancelot and Vane lead the White Dragons into battle against the forces of Wales. Meanwhile Siegfried is locked in his own battle.

Back at Wales Castle, Aglovale learns that the order is marching against him.
He stands before his troops to deliver a rousing speech.
Aglovale: Burn this into your mind! To accept defeat is to sign the death warrants of your fellow citizens!
Aglovale: The completion of our glorious empire is just before our eyes. Only fools stand in our way. Crush them all!
Aglovale: All units! Advance on Feendrache!
Soldier of Wales: Three cheers for the king! We will fight to the death!
The army begins to advance, a steady stream of dust rising in their wake.
Lancelot and Vane stand in front of the ranks of the Order of the White Dragons.
Lancelot: This is not a war of aggression. Anyone who breaks the code will be severely punished.
Lancelot: Our mission is to apprehend the leader of the House of Wales, Aglovale.
Lancelot: Rally on me, noble knights of the order! Now we march!
White Dragon 1: Sir Lancelot! We will follow you to the bitter end!
Lancelot's troops begin to move, their boots hitting the ground in unison.
Vyrn: Lancelot sure knows how to whip them into a frenzy!
Vane: All right, listen up, guys! It's time to show off the results of our special training!
Vane: And once this is over, food and drinks are on me!
White Dragon 2: Gwahaha! Don't get ahead of yourself there!
Vane: Argh! Come on, I had a cool speech going!
Lyria: Heehee. Vane's unit looks like a lot of fun.
Percival: We'll bring up the rear, (Captain).
(Captain) takes a deep breath in anticipation of the epic battle to come.
Lyria: Let's do whatever we can to end this battle as quickly as possible.
Vyrn: Agreed. Come on, (Captain)!
Meanwhile Siegfried is engaged in a battle of his own.
Siegfried: Haaah!
???: Gwagh!
???: Ngh... Who are you? What are you doing here?
Siegfried: I'd be more worried about the punishment you're about to face than who I am.
???: Ugh... Where are the others?
Siegfried: I hate to break it to you, but you're the last one standing. Haah!

Between Frost and Flame - Chapter 5: Outbreak - Episode 1

As they march with the White Dragons, Percival and the crew discuss the need to stop Aglovale. A scout informs the order that they are about to make contact with the Wales forces.

Percival and the crew head into battle alongside Lancelot and Vane.
Lancelot: There's no time to lose. We have to stop them from activating the Otherworld Key...
Vane: If Aglovale manages to open the gate, we're basically all doomed.
Percival: Yes. The army of the dead will spew forth and blot out the sky.
Lancelot: It sounds to me like cutting off the dragon nodes is our best option.
Vane: Great idea! Let's just do that then—
Percival: From the way my brother was talking, I suspect it's too late for that.
Percival: That's why I think the most realistic option now is to capture my brother and force him to stop this.
Lancelot: Yes, that would still give us a chance.
Vane: Got it! Grab Percy's brother, end of story!
Percival: Hold your horses. As if a mongrel like you stands a chance against my brother. You belong in the rear flank.
Vane: Man, what's your problem? I know that's one of your Percy-isms, but whose side are you on anyway?
They are interrupted by a knight bearing a status report.
White Dragon 1: Captain Lancelot! We have word from our scouts!
White Dragon 1: The enemy is directly ahead of our position. We'll make contact in a matter of minutes at this rate!
Lancelot: Understood.
Lancelot: All troops prepare to engage! Do not falter!
Vane: But if your life is in danger, fall back and leave the rest to us!
Vane: Live on and let's meet again in Feendrache! That's an order!
Lancelot's and Vane's words have a rousing effect on troop morale.
Percival: Good. Looks like they're ready for action.
Percival: Come, (Captain). Our mission begins now!

Between Frost and Flame - Chapter 5: Outbreak - Episode 2

Lancelot and Vane display superb coordination in their attacks, turning the tide of battle in Feendrache's favor. Percival and the crew lend their support.

Fighting breaks out all across the battlefield when both armies meet.
Vane: Right flank's coming under pressure, Lancey!
Lancelot: Got it! I'll push the line forward. Right flank, drop back!
White Dragon 1: Yes, sir! Right flank, to the rear!
Lancelot: I'm going in!
A chilly aura swells from within Lancelot's body, converging into his twin swords.
He charges to the right, pointing his frosted blades toward the enemy.
Lancelot: Vane, are you ready?
Vane: Yeah, I got this! Somewhere in that direction, right?
Lancelot: Hup!
Lancelot hops softly onto Vane's spear.
Lancelot: One, two, graaah!
Vane launches Lancelot with all his might. Lancelot seems to dance in the air as he tumbles over the enemy line.
Lancelot: Haaah!
His air raid rains down on the opposing front line.
Lancelot: Vane! Move in!
Vane: All right, you guys! Charge in while we've got them pinned!
White Dragon 2: Raaah! Everyone, forward!
The Order of the White Dragons gain the upper hand thanks to the Lancelot-Vane tandem.
Lyria: Wow! They're really in tune with each other, aren't they?
Vyrn: Yeah! That's childhood buddies for ya!
Percival: Hey. This isn't the time for distractions.
Percival: We've got our own enemies to worry about.
Solider of Wales: There they are! Cut 'em down!
Percival: Sigh... My heart isn't into this, but you leave me no choice.
Percival: Let's go, (Captain)!

Between Frost and Flame - Chapter 5: Outbreak - Episode 3

Aglovale orders his army to stall for time after receiving a discouraging battlefield report. He then orders an encampment to be set up at a nearby village.

Meanwhile in Aglovale's camp, messengers are flying in from all directions.
Soldier of Wales 1: Report from the runners, Sire.
Soldier of Wales 1: The White Dragons' main force led by Lancelot and Vane is advancing steadily.
Soldier of Wales 1: What are your orders, Sire?
Aglovale: Hmm...
Aglovale: (They certainly live up to the tales told about them.)
Aglovale: (I wasn't expecting this much resistance, especially with Siegfried out of the equation.)
Soldier of Wales 1: Lord Aglovale?
Aglovale: Very well. Let's switch to a more defensive strategy and focus on buying ourselves some time.
Aglovale: Tell all units to use whatever methods necessary.
Soldier of Wales 1: I'll relay the orders immediately!
Aglovale: Don't panic. We have yet to deploy our secret weapon.
Soldier of Wales 2: My lord! We have identified a suitable village to fortify!
Aglovale: Very good. Proceed to set up camp.
Soldier of Wales 2: My lord!

Between Frost and Flame - Chapter 5: Outbreak - Episode 4

Percival recognizes fleeing villagers as the ones the crew had saved from bandits earlier. The villagers reveal that Aglovale has taken over their village, prompting Percival and the crew to advance ahead of the White Dragons.

Back on the battlefield, Lancelot is thrown off by the enemy's new defensive formation.
Lancelot: Strange... Something about the enemy has changed. The mood feels different.
Vane: Yeah, I'm with you on that. They attack, retreat, attack, retreat... What are they up to?
Lancelot: Careful, Vane. It could be a trap. Keep an eye out as we advance.
Vane: Roger that, Lancey! Don't push in too deep, yeah?
At that moment several villagers sprint past the crew.
Percival: Where have I seen those villagers before?
Percival: Hey, you there!
Villager: No, please! I—wait, you're Percival!
Percival: I thought so. You're the villagers who put us up for the night.
Villager: Yes. Thank you for helping us the other day.
Percival: Forget about that for now. Return to your village at once. It's too dangerous out here.
Villager: We can't. The Wales forces have taken over the whole place.
Percival: What? Was anyone hurt?
Villager: I don't know. We were just trying to save our own hides...
Villager: But I did overhear that someone high up had ordered them to set up camp there.
Percival: Sounds like my brother...
Lancelot: Percival! We'll clean up things here!
Percival: Are you sure, Lancelot?
Vane: Go! Catch your brother and finish this quickly! We're counting on you!
Percival: Humph, thanks for the pressure. Whatever, I'll let you off this time!
Percival: (Captain), will you and the others come with me?
Vyrn: Just try and stop us, Burnsalot!
Lyria: Yep! We're your vassals, remember?
Percival: Thank you all...
Percival: Okay, let's head for the village and avoid engaging the enemy as much as possible!

Between Frost and Flame - Chapter 6: Between Frost and Flame - Episode 1

Percival confronts Aglovale in the village. Aglovale declares that Percival has lost, leaving an elite soldier of Wales to deal with him.

(Captain) and company arrive at the village under Wales occupation.
Percival: Release the villagers at once!
Aglovale: Ah, my dear Percival. What brings you here to see me?
Percival: What are you playing at, Aglovale?
Percival: What have you done with the upstanding brother I used to look up to?
Aglovale: Don't push your petty ideals on me.
Aglovale: I'm the same as I always was. This is the real me.
Percival: Brother, I'm asking you to free the villagers.
Aglovale: And what if I refuse?
Percival: Then I'll use force.
Aglovale: Guards...
Elite Guard: Sire!
Percival: Your lackeys can't stop me.
Aglovale: Heh... You're naive, Percival.
Aglovale: I assure you that my men will defeat you today.
Elite Guard: Tch... If you weren't Lord Aglovale's brother, I'd have killed you already.
Percival: How uncouth. It's time I taught you some manners.
Percival: (Captain), stand down. This is between me and my brother.
Vyrn: Uh, sure...
Lyria: Don't push yourself, Percival.
Percival's determination compels (Captain) and the others to watch from the wings.
Elite Guard: Don't get ahead of yourself, boy. Lackey, was it? I'll make you eat your words!
Percival: Do your worst!

Between Frost and Flame - Chapter 6: Between Frost and Flame - Episode 2

The elite soldier is bested by Percival, but villagers are brought forth as hostages and round two begins. Despite not being able to fight back due to the hostage situation, Percival taunts his opponent, declaring that only he will be the target of any blows and no one else.

Elite Guard: Guh...
Percival's exquisite blade work makes short work of his opponent.
Percival: Humph, all talk. That just about sums it up.
Percival: You're next, Brother.
Aglovale: Pfft! Naive... You're oh so naive.
Smirking, Aglovale gestures to one of his men.
Soldiers bring in a group of villagers, swords held to their throats.
Aglovale: Now do you get it?
Percival: Aglovale! You wouldn't stoop so low!
Aglovale: Bwahaha! You can't be this stupid!
Aglovale: The battlefield is a struggle between life and death. We do what we must for victory.
Aglovale: Am I wrong? Or are you saying I should be playing by some sort of rules?
Percival: Erk...
Aglovale: You know what your problem is? You think too much about others. That will be your downfall.
A messenger appears by Aglovale's side and whispers something into his ear.
Aglovale: Mm. Preparations are complete.
Aglovale: Percival, this war will be over soon. Stop resisting and join me.
Aglovale: But first we need to fix that naivete of yours. A hard lesson should do the trick.
Aglovale walks off, leaving his guards to handle the situation.
Elite Guard: Well, well. Now it's payback time for what you did to me before.
Percival: Grr... Curse you...
The soldier walks slowly towards the crew, but Percival stands firm.
Elite Guard: Uh-uh-uh... What's gonna happen to the villagers if you hit me?
Percival: You don't know yourself? You must be stupider than you look.
Elite Guard: Tch... How long do you think you can keep up your tough guy act for?
Percival draws himself up to his full height, glaring straight into the guard's eyes.
Percival: Do what you want with me, but leave my vassals out of this. Don't you lay a finger on them.
Elite Guard: Huh? I'm the one giving orders—
Percival: Shut up, lackey. I won't say it twice.
Percival: As long as I'm standing, you won't so much as tickle my vassals.
Vyrn: Sir Burnsalot!
Lyria: Percival!
(Captain) takes a step forward, no longer content just to watch.
Percival: (Captain)! I said this has nothing to do with you. Stand down.
Elite Guard: Hah, still trying to look cool to the very end! Do you understand the situation you're in?
Percival: All I see is a dog who's all bark but no bite. Get it over with already.
Percival: Oh, wait. Could it be that you're afraid of me, even though I'm not allowed to hurt you?
Elite Guard: You little...
Elite Guard: Lord Aglovale told me to take it easy on you, but I've had it.
Elite Guard: No mercy. You're gonna wish you were dead!

Between Frost and Flame - Chapter 6: Between Frost and Flame - Episode 3

Percival takes hit after hit, never falling, but he eventually must be propped up on (Captain)'s shoulder. As the elite soldier is about to deliver a fatal strike, Vane and Lancelot appear just in time, and the crew's counterattack begins.

Elite Guard: Huff... Huff... You!
Percival: What's wrong? Is that all you've got?
Elite Guard: Huff... Huff... Take this!
Percival: Augh... Ugh...
The beating seems to go on forever, but Percival never wavers.
Vyrn: H-hey, that's enough, Burnsalot!
Lyria: Percival! He'll kill you if you let him beat you any more!
Blood begins to trickle from (Captain)'s clenched fists.
Elite Guard: You're an abnormality! You should've been on the ground by now!
Percival: Heh...
Elite Guard: Damn you! What's so funny!
Percival: Ugh... Gwuh... Blecch...
Elite Guard: Just! Go! Down!
Percival: Ha... Haha... Kinda tickles...
Elite Guard: Graaah!
Percival: Aaugh!
The guard puts the full weight of his body into his strike. Percival staggers and is about to crumple.
Lyria: Gasp!
(Captain) acts on impulse, steadying Percival.
Percival: Foolish vassal... I told you to... stay behind me...
But (Captain)'s head shakes from side to side, desperately trying to endure the rage.
(Captain)'s expression seems to say: When one has to suffer, all suffer together.
Percival: Heh... You're such... a disobedient vassal...
Elite Guard: Huff... Huff...
Haha! You're no longer standing which means the deal's off!
The guard lifts his weapon and brings it down for a devastating blow on Percival and (Captain).
???: Raaah!
Just as the blow comes down, Vane bursts in and knocks the weapon out of the guard's hand.
Elite Guard: Ack! Who are you?
Vane: One, two, clobber!
Elite Guard: Gwagh!
Vane: Wahaha! Good riddance!
Vane sends the unsuspecting guard flying.
Vane: Sorry I took so long, guys.
Vane: Percival... (Captain)... Man, you two have been holding out well.
Vane and (Captain) help Percival up, supporting him from each side.
Percival: Vane... I'm fine...
Percival: The villagers... Quickly...
Vane: It's all under control! Now, Lancey! Go!
Lancelot: Haaah!
Lancelot swoops down on the guards holding the villagers captive and quickly dispatches them one by one.
Lancelot: Whew. That should do.
Elite Guard: What just happened?
Lancelot: Lancelot, leader of the Order of the White Dragons, happened!
Vane: Don't forget me, Vice-captain Vane!
The Wales soldiers gape at the sudden turn of events.
Lancelot: All clear, Vane!
Vane: Nice! You're the best, Lancey!
The villagers erupt in cheers for their rescuers.
Lyria: Sigh... That was close...
Vyrn: You guys rock!
Vane: Glad you're both okay.
Percival: Hey, it's too early to celebrate. There are still enemies left!
Vane: Yeah, yeah! Lancey!
Lancelot: I hear you, Vane. Let's sweep up this trash!
Percival: I'll join you.
Vane: No way! You need to rest, Percy.
Percival: Heh, I'm feeling good after that little massage! Come on, (Captain)!

Between Frost and Flame - Chapter 6: Between Frost and Flame - Episode 4

Aglovale thinks he's about to obtain the Otherworld Key, but Siegfried has been sabotaging Aglovale's plans from behind the scenes. With no options left, Aglovale merges with the incomplete Otherworld Key and prepares to eliminate the crew.

(Captain) and company interrogate the defeated soldiers about the whereabouts of Aglovale.
It turns out Aglovale has returned to the underground chamber he had shown the party previously.
Percival: Of course you'd come back here, Brother.
Aglovale: Welcome, Percival.
Lancelot: Aglovale, Lord of Frost, accept your defeat. There's no point in putting up a fight anymore.
Vane: Yeah, there's nowhere left for you to run!
Aglovale: Ah, yes, you two are with the Order of the White Dragons.
Aglovale: I'm sorry to say you've wasted your time mobilizing your skilled knights.
Percival: Brother... Drop this crude charade and cease this madness.
Aglovale: I'll ask you again: what if I refuse?
Percival: I will stop you.
Aglovale: Humph. Tell me, Percival, why are you so intent on opposing me?
Percival: Because we've chosen different paths, you and I.
Aglovale: That's true. I wonder when was it that we started following such different paths...
Percival: Why are you so set on harnessing the power of the Otherworld?
Aglovale: I have ideals, if you will. It's the price I pay for having my wish come true.
Percival: What foolish ideals would necessitate a deal with the devil?
Aglovale: And what are your ideals? Peace, perhaps? A land where the weak can live without fear?
Aglovale: I won't disparage your philosophy, but you just never learn.
Aglovale: People are weak. Their minds and bodies are vessels of frailty.
Aglovale: And they're ultimately evil. It doesn't matter what lofty sermons people may preach. That is the unfaltering truth.
Aglovale: Without a strict, strong leader, people will stray from the right path sooner or later.
Percival: Even if you're right, I don't want to believe it.
Percival: I choose to believe in a person's potential, even if they slip up sometimes and make mistakes!
Aglovale: Humph! Spout your noble ideals all you like, but even the brightest lights cast a shadow.
Aglovale: Whatever you choose to believe, those shadows grow. They always do.
Percival: Brother...
Aglovale: There's no point debating this any further.
Aglovale: It pains me to have to fight my own flesh and blood, but we've reached an impasse.
Lancelot decides to whisper something to the others.
Lancelot: (Psst... I don't see anyone here besides Aglovale.)
Lancelot: (I say we take him out now before he does anything rash. You with me?)
(Captain) nods very slightly.
Vane: (Just give me the signal!)
Percival: (Yeah.)
Aglovale suddenly bursts into laughter.
Aglovale: Pfft... Bwahaha! Ah hah hah hah hah!
Lancelot: What's so funny?
Aglovale: Hehe. Oh, the smugness on your faces is just too rich. You think you've already won, don't you? I can't stop laughing... Pffahaha.
Lancelot: Your army has been more or less decimated by my knights. You've got nothing left.
Lancelot: We can put an end to all this with minimal casualties. It's futile to resist any longer.
Vane: Yeah, just give yourself up without a fight! You know it makes sense!
Percival: Aglovale, I can vouch for these people. They're trustworthy.
Lancelot: I assure you no harm will come to you. Now surrender your weapons and come with us—
Aglovale: Hahaha... Is it me you should be worrying about, or is it your king?
Lancelot: Huh? What are you talking about?
Aglovale: Even as we speak, I imagine Feendrache is awash with fire and devastation.
Vane: Don't be a sore loser. How could Feendrache be under attack?
Aglovale: It's very simple. The Wales family is an ally of the Duchy of Dalmore.
Aglovale: They should be invading Feendrache according to our plan.
Lancelot: What?
Vane: H-hey, quit joking around...
Percival: Sorry, but I won't fall for an obvious lie.
Aglovale: Hahahaha! You idiots were so focused on the enemy in front of you that you left your homeland wide open!
Vane: He's... He's lying, isn't he?
Vane: We can still make it if we leave now, Lancey! We've got to make sure everyone's safe!
Lancelot: Ngh... I just hope the city guards can hold out long enough...
Vyrn: Uh, you're not gonna take this guy seriously, are you?
Lyria: Oh no, what should we do, (Captain)?
Percival: Don't give in. We'd be playing right into his hands!
The sound of an approaching figure grows louder and louder.
Aglovale: And that would be the messenger with news of our progress.
Siegfried: Sorry it took me so long to get here.
Aglovale: Erk! Siegfried?
Siegfried: Greetings, Lord of Frost. You didn't make this place easy to find.
Lancelot: Siegfried!
Vane: Whoa!
Percival: What are you doing here, Siegfried?
(Captain) and the others can't hide their surprise at Siegfried's arrival.
Siegfried: The troops of Dalmore are withdrawing back to their own kingdom.
Aglovale: Impossible! Don't speak nonsense!
Siegfried: It's not nonsense. I have in my possession a signed alliance between Dalmore and Feendrache.
Aglovale: An alliance?
Siegfried pulls out a document from his pocket.
Lancelot: You negotiated an alliance with the Duchy of Dalmore?
Siegfried: That's right, Lancelot, while you and the others were taking care of the Wales army.
Siegfried: I accepted the role of ambassador and took a letter signed by King Carl with the terms of the agreement.
Lancelot: But you couldn't have arranged an alliance in that amount of time. No one could.
Siegfried: Let's just say I gave the performance of a lifetime. Heh, I'll admit it wasn't easy.
Vane: Way to go, Siegfried!
Vane: You're not just a great fighter; you're a great negotiator too!
Siegfried: Hmm... I know you're trying to pay me a compliment, Vane.
Siegfried: But it sounds like up until this point you've thought of me as all brawn and no brains.
Vane: What? No! No, I didn't mean it like that! I'm s-sorry!
Siegfried: Heh. That was a joke. You're too gullible.
Percival: But how did you know this would happen? Don't tell me you're hiding psychic powers!
Siegfried: Hah hah hah! That's a good one, Percival.
Siegfried: If I could predict the future, we would have avoided this mess from the start.
Siegfried: No, I took what I'd learned from my investigations and constructed the worst-case scenario.
Percival: You can't be serious! You calculated that this would happen?
Percival: I'm speechless. There's more to you than meets the eye.
Lastly Siegfried turns to (Captain) and speaks in a gentle tone.
Siegfried: And I think we all owe you and your friends a great deal too, (Captain).
Vyrn: What're you talkin' about? We're good buddies! Helpin' out's just what we do!
Lyria: Exactly. You helped us just as much as we helped you.
Siegfried: Thank you, (Captain). I won't forget this.
(Captain) and Siegfried exchange a meaningful nod of acknowledgment.
Siegfried: All that's left is to deal with you, Aglovale.
Aglovale: Not quite. I still have the Otherworld Key remember?
Aglovale: Everything is already in place. The dragon nodes have enough power. It's time to birth the key!
Percival: Tch... It just never ends!
Lancelot: Siegfried, if he hatches that key, the whole world will be in grave danger!
Vane: Yeah, millions of creepy crawlies will... will...
Vane: Argh, I can't even finish it! We've got to stop him!
Aglovale: You're too late. I've activated all of the magic circles.
Aglovale: The dragon nodes are feeding their power into the Otherworld Key as we speak!
Great surges of energy pulsate in from all sides.
The magic circle underneath the Otherworld Key shines brightly, unleashing a violent whirlpool of power.
Aglovale: Bwahahaha! I told you it was too late! Let the gate to the Otherworld be unbarred!
Siegfried: Ngh...
The room is bathed in a blinding light, but only for an instant. Everything becomes still, as if a switch had been flicked off.
Aglovale: What? What's happening? There should have been ample power!
Siegfried: Sorry, Aglovale.
Siegfried: I've noticed your family engaging in suspicious activities in other lands as of late.
Siegfried: I came across some interesting magic circles on my journeys, and I decided it would be best to destroy them.
Lancelot: Huh? So what you're saying is... we're saved?
Percival: Yes. I was prepared for the worst, but it seems like Siegfried has taken care of things.
Vane: Wahaha! I don't know how you did it, Siegfried, but you've really played the trump card this time!
Lyria: Amazing!
Vyrn: Yeah, you totally stole the show!
(Captain) breathes a sigh of relief.
Siegfried: Let's not get ahead of ourselves.
Aglovale: Siegfried! You meddling, pompous fink!
Aglovale: How could you have possibly known all this?
Siegfried: Humph. If you had paid any attention to the rumors, you'd see how conspicuous your plan was.
Siegfried: Give up, Aglovale. It's time to admit defeat.
Aglovale: No... No, it's not over yet.
Aglovale: If this is to be my last option, then so be it!
Percival: Brother, no!
Percival tries to stop him, but Aglovale slips past and hurls himself at the Otherworld Key.
Aglovale: Graaah! My life...
Aglovale: Is yours!
Otherworld Key: Gurgle... Gurgurgle... Gurgyaaa!
Percival: No, Brother! Stop this at once!
Aglovale: Farewell, Percival...
Percival: Aglovaaale!
But Percival's cries no longer reach him, for the Otherworld Key completely consumes Aglovale.
The Otherworld Key starts to pulsate violently.
Percival: Aglovale...
Otherworld Key: Gurgle!
Siegfried: Percival!
The Otherworld Key attacks Percival, but Siegfried manages to save him just in time.
Percival: Thanks, Siegfried.
Siegfried: It's not like you to give up hope.
Percival: Yeah, you're right. There must still be a way...
Siegfried: Unfortunately it looks like your brother's magic has tipped the balance and started the activation process again.
Lancelot: Then the Otherworld gate is about to open?
Siegfried: No, I think it still needs more time. If we strike now, maybe we can—
Percival: Ngh...
Vane: Percival...
Percival: I'm fine... This isn't the time for mourning.
Percival: I'll put my life on the line to stop it.
Percival: (Captain)... All of you, please lend me your support!
With his companions' backing, Percival raises his weapon with a steely resolve.
Siegfried: Of course. Never forget that you're not alone.
Lancelot: I'm with you all the way, Percival.
Vane: Yeah, don't worry, Percy. There's still hope. And I'm right behind you too.
Lyria: You can always count on us, Percival.
Vyrn: Yep. You know we're never far away! Right, (Captain)?
Everyone gathers around Percival and clasps hands in solidarity.
Last but not least, (Captain) joins the group.
Percival: I owe you all so much.
Otherworld Key: Gurgyaaa!
Percival: This is the final battle, (Captain)! No regrets!

Between Frost and Flame - Ending

Percival and Aglovale fall unconscious after the Otherworld Key is defeated, sending them back to a childhood memory in which they watch their mother die because of bandits. Percival reveals that their mother never wanted them to bear a grudge against anyone. Faced with the truth, Aglovale reconciles with his younger brother.

Otherworld Key: Gur... Gurgyaa!
(Captain) and the others finally destroy the Otherworld Key in a grueling battle.
Percival: Huff... Huff... Is it done with?
Lancelot: I... I think it is...
Siegfried: Hmm... I don't know if it's still alive or not, but its power seems to be draining away.
Vane: Hey, look! Over there!
The party looks to where Vane is pointing and sees Aglovale's body on the ground.
Percival: Brother!
Forcing his pain-wracked body to move, Percival runs over to his brother and pulls him into his arms.
An ominous presence watches from the shadows.
???: Just another worthless piece of scrap in the end... Mortals don't have what it takes no matter how powerful they are.
???: Humph... Ah well, there's always next time...
The shadowy figure disappears in a wisp of smoke, completely unnoticed by the party.
The ground begins to shake at the same moment.
Percival: Brother... Stay with me...
Aglovale: Percival?
Percival: How are you feeling, Brother?
Aglovale: Percy... Mother...
As Aglovale slips out of consciousness, Percival blacks out as well.
Once upon a time a terrible war raged between two neighboring lands. Wales Castle became inundated with refugees.
Herzeloyde flits busily through the castle halls.
Herzeloyde: Hm? Why do you look so worried, Percy?
Young Percival: I don't understand, Mama. Why are all these people here in our land?
Herzeloyde: Because they have no homes to return to. They were burned up in the war.
Herzeloyde: So we have to make sure these people are okay and help them as much as we can.
Young Percival: Help them?
Young Aglovale: But why should we have to help them?
Herzeloyde: Oh dear, because we want to of course! Mm, not everything needs a reason I suppose.
Herzeloyde: Anyway, you know what they say: help others and others will help you.
Herzeloyde: Imagine if we lost our home, and everybody pretended not to notice. Wouldn't that make you very sad?
Young Aglovale: Yeah... That wouldn't feel very nice at all.
Young Lamorak: But if we didn't have a house, we could go on an adventure anywhere!
Herzeloyde: Why, yes, we could! That sounds like fun!
Herzeloyde: But what if we get hungry?
Young Lamorak: We need food?
Herzeloyde: Yes, we can't travel the whole time without food.
Herzeloyde: A beautiful view is hard to enjoy on an empty tummy.
Young Lamorak: Mmhmm, Mama's right.
Herzeloyde: So when you meet someone in trouble, I want you to ask them if they need help.
Herzeloyde: I hope you all grow up to be kind people like that.
Herzeloyde: What do you think? Will you make a promise to your mama?
Herzeloyde breaks into a warm smile as she looks at her children.
Young Percival: Yes, Mama!
Young Aglovale: Of course, Mother. Lords need to be kind to the common people after all.
Young Lamorak: Okay! They can have half of my food!
The war worsens, and the conflict gradually spills over into parts of Wales.
Herzeloyde and her three boys are traveling in a carriage.
Young Percival: Ngh... Mmm...
Herzeloyde: Sorry, did I wake you, Percy? Go back to sleep, dear.
Young Percival: Mama, do you have any snacks?
Young Lamorak: Sigh... I'm hungry too. We need more than air to live.
Young Lamorak: Those villagers ate all our food! They've got no manners!
Herzeloyde: I'm sorry, boys. I'm sure your papa will have some warm soup for us when we get back.
Young Percival: Mmm... A big bowl of warm soup...
Young Lamorak: Boo... I still wish we had some leftovers.
Young Aglovale: Stop complaining and pull yourselves together!
Young Aglovale: Is this how a proud member of the House of Wales acts?
Young Aglovale: Stop making Mother worry, you hear me?
Young Percival: Yes...
Young Lamorak: Okay...
Percival and Lamorak look crestfallen after a scolding from their older brother.
Young Aglovale: Huh?
Herzeloyde: I'm sorry I don't have anything for you.
Herzeloyde: But we should be home soon—
Suddenly the carriage flips over accompanied by a loud bang.
Herzeloyde: ...!
When the passengers come to, they realize they are trapped inside the overturned carriage.
Young Percival: Ugh...
Young Lamorak: What happened? That was scary...
Young Aglovale: Ugh... Did the carriage tip over?
Eventually the three boys notice that they are being cradled in their mother's arms.
Herzeloyde: Oh, thank goodness you're all okay.
Young Percival: W-what's that, Mama?
Young Lamorak: It's all goopy...
Young Aglovale: Mother... What is this?
Herzeloyde: Oh... It's mine...
Herzeloyde is hunched over her boys, a piece of wood protruding from her back like a burial cross.
The color drains from Percival and Lamorak's faces as the pool of blood at their feet grows ever larger.
Young Percival: Mama! Mama!
Young Lamorak: Why is this happening, Mama? It can't be real...
Young Aglovale: Get a grip, you two! How's panicking going to help anyone?
Young Aglovale: Agh... Where's the driver?
Young Aglovale: Can anyone hear me? Anybody?
Just then a pair of men enter the carriage, their voices shaking.
Bandit 1: N-no funny business! Just hand over the valuables!
Bandit 2: Y-you're Lady Herzeloyde!
Herzeloyde: Huff... Huff... Who are... you?
Bandit 1: Oh no... This is all wrong...
Young Aglovale: You're those villagers from the other day!
Young Aglovale: Take whatever you want, but please... please...
Young Aglovale: Please help my mother! You have to!
Bandit 1: Hey, what're we gonna do now? They recognized us...
Bandit 2: It was your idea to hit the carriage! You deal with it!
Young Lamorak: I'm sorry!
Herzeloyde: Please... spare... my boys...
Young Percival: Don't die, Mama... Mama, you can't...
Young Aglovale: You guys stay behind me! It'll be okay. I'll definitely protect you...
Bandit 2: C'mon, get it over with! Someone's gonna come any minute now!
Young Aglovale: Please, there's still time to save her! I'm begging you: call someone over!
Tears stream down Aglovale's face like floodgates being opened.
Bandit 1: Urgh... Shut up, twerp!
Young Aglovale: Gwah!
Bandit 2: H-hey, you okay, kid?
The heck are you doing? Don't go overboard!
Bandit 1: Stop bein' such a coward and help me look for the good stuff!
Bandit 1: Tch, this jewel's all they got. Let's get outta here!
Bandit 2: Wait! Don't leave me behind!
The bandits flee from the carriage.
Young Aglovale: Wretched scum...
Aglovale dazedly gets to his feet.
Young Aglovale: Lamorak, try to stop the bleeding.
Young Lamorak: O-okay!
Young Aglovale: Percival, don't move from Mother's side.
Young Percival: Sniff... Okay... Sob...
Young Aglovale: Someone! Help us! Please help! Is anyone out there?
Aglovale staggers outside the toppled carriage, calling for help.
Young Aglovale: Good-for-nothing wretches... They're the lowest form of people in this world.
Young Aglovale: I'll never forgive them... I'll never forgive them!
With a fierce look in his eyes, Aglovale curses the bandits over and over again.
Young Lamorak: It's no good... I can't stop the bleeding.
Young Lamorak: My magic's just not good enough.
Young Lamorak: Someone help us... Anyone...
The only thing Percival can do is grasp his mother's hand.
Herzeloyde: Gasp... Wheeze... Are you there... Percy?
Young Percival: Yes! I'm right here, Mama!
Herzeloyde: Come...
Young Percival: Mama?
Herzeloyde: Don't...
Young Percival: Mama!
Herzeloyde: Don't... hold... grudges...
Herzeloyde: Be nice... to your brothers...
Herzeloyde: Per... cival...
Lamo... rak...
Aglo... vale...
Herzeloyde: I love... you...
Young Percival: Sob... Mama...
Percival takes in Herzeloyde's dying words.
He continues to firmly grasp her hand even as the warmth slowly fades away.
Percival: Ngh... Ugh... Where am I?
Percival wakes up in a bedroom he doesn't recognize.
Percival: It's warm...
(Captain) is sleeping in a chair next to Percival's bed.
Percival: That's right. You're here because of me.
Percival ruffles (Captain)'s hair gently with a warm expression on his face.
Percival: Heh. How many times have you helped me now, (Captain)?
(Captain)'s snore seems to say don't mention it, but (Captain)'s sleeping, innocent expression never changes.
Percival: I don't know where you draw your strength from. Maybe it'll always be a mystery.
(Captain)'s eyes slowly open as the rest of the party enters the room.
Vyrn: Hey, they're both awake!
Lyria: Waaah! Your vassals are so glad to see that you're okay!
Percival: I really made you worry this time, didn't I?
Lancelot: It seems the color has been restored to your face, Percival.
Percival: Thanks for the concern, Lancelot. By the way, where are we?
Lancelot: We asked some people from Wales Castle if they had a spare room. I hope you don't mind?
Percival: No, not at all. Thank you.
Vane: You hungry, Percy? I'll make you whatever you want. Your choice!
Percival: Ah, can't really say I'm hungry right now, mongrel.
Vane: Porridge it is then! Porridge does wonders for digestion!
Vane: All right, all right! One Vane Super Special coming right up!
Percival: Hey, I didn't order any porridge! Don't go deciding things on your own!
Siegfried: Percival... May I have a word regarding your family?
Percival: Ah! What of my brother and the state of Wales?
Siegfried: Don't worry. Fortunately his life is in no danger.
Percival: Thank goodness.
Siegfried: The entire area caved in after you lost consciousness.
Siegfried: No one will ever be able to use it again.
Siegfried: I believe there are only a handful of people who know about the Otherworld Key and the underground secrets.
Siegfried: We can safely quash any leaks to the public about his plan as fearmongering rumors.
Siegfried: Having said that, we still don't know what the Otherworld's motives are.
Lancelot: The Order of the White Dragons is overseeing public order and the restoration of Wales.
Percival: It seems I have much to thank you for.
Lancelot: You were a huge help to us before, remember? Think nothing of it.
Percival: Heh. Does that make us even?
Percival: So where is my brother?
Lancelot: Come with me.
(Captain) and the others take Percival to another room.
Percival: Brother...
Aglovale opens his eyes.
Percival gingerly approaches his brother's bedside.
Percival: How are you feeling?
Aglovale: Hey, Percival... Well, I'm still alive.
Aglovale: I just had a long dream that I haven't seen in a long time. A memory of Mother.
Percival: I believe I saw the same dream.
Aglovale: Really? Perhaps our reunion has resurrected old memories.
Percival: Yes...
They sit in silence for a while.
Percival: Where did the Otherworld Key come from?
Aglovale: It was our father's legacy. Gahmuret left it behind after his death.
Percival: What? He had a hand in this?
Aglovale: Yes. After Mother died, he constructed an underground laboratory to study the Otherworld.
Aglovale: When I inherited the family estate, I inherited his research as well. I made a new pact with an Otherworld being that Father had made contact with.
Aglovale: That creature gave me the Otherworld Key as a type of weapon.
Percival: A weapon? Then the true culprit behind this is that fiend from the Otherworld!
Aglovale: No, you're wrong. The fault is mine.
Aglovale: My heart is weak. That allowed the Otherworld to take advantage of me and cause this strife.
Percival: But—
Aglovale: Furthermore I truly believed that people were fundamentally evil.
Aglovale: I'd forgotten all the kindness that had been done to me. How could I trust people after those villains left our mother to die?
Percival: What was your real reason for wanting to open the gate?
Aglovale: By using the key to open the gate, I could connect our world with the Otherworld.
Aglovale: Perhaps I just wanted to see Mother again one more time.
Percival: ...
Aglovale: Go on, scoff at your stupid brother. I deserve it.
Aglovale: There was something I wanted to ask her. People are such vile creatures, you see.
Aglovale: But she continued to love those very same people until her last breath.
Aglovale: I wanted to know how she felt about that in her final moments.
Percival: Brother...
Percival recounts their mother's last words.
Percival: Mother's heart was full of love right up to the end.
Percival: She told me not to bear any grudges and that we three brothers should live in harmony.
Percival: She told me... that she loved us...
Aglovale: I see... Mother never doubted for a second.
Percival: No, she didn't.
Aglovale: I've been following the wrong path ever since then.
Aglovale: From that day on not the words of my vassals nor my own brothers could have swayed me from that path.
Aglovale: You've always been surrounded by loving friends on your travels, Percival.
Aglovale: But I've always been alone.
Percival: No, Brother. You'll never be alone.
Aglovale: ...
Percival: You... You have me. And Lamorak.
Aglovale: Percival...
Percival: Let's start again. With all three of us working together this time.
Aglovale: Yes... I'd like that, Percival.
(Captain) and the others watch the two brothers exchange firm handshakes.
Under the soft rays of the afternoon sun, two brothers—one of fire, one of ice—rekindle a scene of their childhood bliss.

The End

Between Frost and Flames - Dreams of Snow Silver - Episode 1

The young brothers Aglovale, Lamorak, and Percival sneak out one night to pick strawberries for their mother. They fall into a deep hole, and a fight begins between Aglovale and Lamorak, upsetting Percival. Lamorak leads the crying Percival away, and Aglovale decides to take a nap.

The sound of rhythmic water dropping is interrupted by the sound of voices echoing in the distance.
Aglovale: So basically, we have no choice but to climb our way out of here.
Lamorak: That's a problem...
Percival: A big one...
Within the warm, dark hole, Aglovale, Lamorak, and Percival's eyes meet.
Lamorak: I'm really sorry I got the two of you stuck down here with me.
Percival: It's okay... I wasn't paying as much attention as I should have been.
Aglovale: There's no use in dwelling on what we should have done. At least we're all safe.
Percival: That's true! And we still have the strawberries!
Lamorak: Yay! Good thing you didn't lose those.
Lamorak's voice reflects his positive attitude as he looks at Percival and the strawberries he holds.
Aglovale, on the other hand, seems lost in thought with his arms crossed in front of him.
Aglovale: It's too early to be cheerful. We have to find a way out if we want to get those to Mother.
Lamorak: We'll be fine. I'm sure someone is looking for us as we speak!
Percival: But... we didn't tell anyone we went out to collect strawberries...
Lamorak: What? Well if I were looking for missing people, I'd look in this forest first!
Lamorak: Right, Aggy?
Aglovale: We can't hope for the best. It's up to us to find a way out.
Aglovale: Hm?
It begins to rain lightly at first, but the water above menacingly turns into a downpour.
Aglovale: Really? Rain?
Lamorak: All right then... I'll just climb this wall and call for help!
Aglovale: Wait... Why do you see the tree but not the forest?
Aglovale: With the rain, the rocks are slippery so there is no possible way you could climb them. Can't you reason that for yourself?
Lamorak: I know but this is all my fault, so I should at least try, right?
Aglovale: And what happens when you fall and hurt yourself? Who do you think will need to take care of you?
Lamorak: Maybe... But I can't stand you anymore.
Aglovale: Excuse me?
Percival senses the anger that's entered the air around him and tries to stop it before it spirals out of control.
Percival: U-um... Could we go find a place to hide from the rain?
Lamorak: Ooh! Where's my head at? Sorry, Percy. Let's do that.
Percival: I think there's a rock over there that will cover all of us!
Lamorak: Onward! Before my little Percy gets all wet!
Percival: Hey! Wait up! Lamorak!
Percival: S-so... Aglovale, are you coming?
Aglovale: Yes... Lead the way.
And so the three brothers take respite from the rain under a large rock.
Lamorak: This rain won't let up...
Percival: Not an inch...
Aglovale: ...
As if trying to break the silence between them, Percival and Lamorak's stomachs growl in hunger.
Percival: Uh...
Lamorak: Hahaha... Hunger calls, right, Percy!
Percival: I...
Aglovale: ...
Lamorak: Hey! What if we just ate the strawberries?
Percival: B-but... these are for Mom...
Lamorak: It's fine! I promise! We'll just come back for more later!
Aglovale: Lamorak, wait...
Lamorak: Hm? What's up?
Aglovale: That might be our only source of nourishment for some time. We can't eat without taking that into consideration.
Lamorak: I hear ya, but... I think eating something sweet is just what we need to get our thinking caps working.
Aglovale: You do understand that that kind of logic is precisely what got us into this predicament, do you not?
Lamorak: Ahaha! Well when you put it like that...
Lamorak: You're always right, master Aggy. I beg your forgiveness...
Aglovale: Do you take pleasure in being so irritating?
Lamorak: Listen up, kettle. Do you get off on thinking you're always the smartest guy in the room?
Aglovale: What? When have I ever done that?
Lamorak: You're kidding, right? You're not even aware you do that? Whatever...
Aglovale: If you want me to understand, then use your words.
Lamorak: No. How about you reflect on your actions instead of having people spell everything out for you.
Aglovale: While we may be brothers, we are two separate entities. How do you expect anyone to understand what you will not voice?
Timid as he may be, Percival decides to interrupt the argument.
Percival: Sob... I... Um...
Aglovale & Lamorak: ...
Percival: C-come on you two! Stop fighting!
Percival: Weep...
Aglovale & Lamorak: ...
Watching Percival try to stop them and break down in tears leaves the other two speechless.
Percival: Cry... Ha... Ha...
Percival: Achoo!
Lamorak: Percy, are you okay? Come on... You need to take it easy.
Percival: Sniff... Sniff...
Lamorak takes Percival with him and leaves Aglovale to his own devices.
Aglovale: I require rest...
Aglovale sits down to rest his eyes.
He listens to the receding rain as he drifts into a soft slumber.

Between Frost and Flames - Dreams of Snow Silver - Episode 2

When Aglovale awakes, he is confronted by a huge beast with silvery-white fur who can speak the common tongue. The beast demands to know what kind of king Aglovale wishes to become, so the boy boldly declares his ideals. His brothers rejoin him, and the three trade their strawberries for a ride home on the beast's back. Aglovale and Lamorak settle their differences, and the boys make it safely home to their worried mother.

Aglovale: ...
After the rain stops, the sound of cicadas can be heard.
Aglovale is awoken by the sudden ceasing of the insect's cries and the feeling of another's presence.
Aglovale: Hm? Did I fall asle—
Aglovale: Gasp!
Silver Beast: ...
Aglovale: A gigantic beast... that shines?
Before Aglovale is an enormous beast with beautiful, snowy silver fur.
Aglovale: Gulp... When did this monster creep up on me?
Aglovale instinctively readies himself for combat.
Silver Beast: Humph... You have the nerve to call me a monster after waltzing into my abode uninvited, little skyfarer?
Aglovale: You... speak the common tongue?
Silver Beast: What of it? I have lived far longer than any of your kind.
Aglovale: ...
Aglovale: Master Snow, you have my deepest apologies for entering your home unannounced.
Aglovale: Please forgive my trespasses.
Aglovale senses the beast means him no harm and bows in his head in respect.
Silver Beast: Exquisite... How calm you've become in my presence.
Silver Beast: You are aware that I may at any moment devour you, are you not?
Aglovale: If you were not a beast of sound mind, you would have already attempted to do so.
Silver Beast: Gahahaha! Little one, you amuse me.
Silver Beast: Give me your name.
Aglovale: I am Aglovale.
Aglovale: Of the House of Wales and ruler of this land.
Silver Beast: Interesting... A son of Wales...
Silver Beast: The magic flowing through your blood would explain why you were able to penetrate my barrier.
Aglovale: You know of us? And our magic?
Silver Beast: Your ancestors have made contact with me before.
Silver Beast: Little one called Aglovale...
Silver Beast: Son of the House of Wales, let me ask...
Aglovale: Yes?
Silver Beast: A simple question to say the least, but... What kind of king do you aspire to be?
Aglovale: What kind of king?
The beast's question forces Aglovale to consider his answer wisely, and so he goes into deep thought.
Silver Beast: What's this? Does the king have no idea what he wishes for his empire?
Aglovale: I... want to build a kingdom of peace—a kingdom without war.
Aglovale: I wish to save the weak and treat all as equal. That is the king I wish to be.
Silver Beast: Humph... Such a naive ideal.
Aglovale: But without ideals, the world will never change.
Aglovale: I believe that people can realize any vision so long as they can imagine it.
Silver Beast: Gahaha... Hahahaha... Is that right, little one?
Silver Beast: The road you envision would cause many a man much grief.
The beast toys with Aglovale, but does not know the strong will that resides in his heart.
Aglovale: I... am no man... I am king.
Silver Beast: So... you say...
Silver Beast: Were you anything less, I imagine I would have already been feasting on your flesh. What a true delight.
Aglovale: Master Snow, I now have a question for you.
Silver Beast: Do you? Let it be heard.
Aglovale: My two brothers and I have lost our way.
Aglovale: Would you give us aid in leaving this place?
Silver Beast: A simple request. But for every action, there is a price.
Aglovale: You wish for recompense?
Silver Beast: I do. I require something of value.
Silver Beast: There are three of you, so one of your lives will suffice.
Aglovale: What? That's absurd!
Silver Beast: You overreact. The world is nothing but a series of absurd events strung together, is it not?
Aglovale: Tch... I'll find another way without your help!
Silver Beast: Let me be clear, little skyfarer. This is my barrier. Climb as you might, you will never leave this place.
Silver Beast: Now then... Which life will you give me?
Aglovale: If I have no choice...
Aglovale strikes his own chest.
Aglovale: Then take my life.
Silver Beast: What is this? You speak of an ideal kingdom you wish to create and only moments later so easily volunteer to throw away your own life?
Aglovale: I believe in them.
Aglovale: Lamorak and Percival can lead this kingdom to my ideal. They can rule in my stead. Of that I have no doubt.
Silver Beast: Even so, that is not sufficient reason to lay down your life for theirs.
Aglovale: Humph... I am their brother.
Aglovale: What brother would not give his life for his kin?
From behind Aglovale, Lamorak's voice is heard.
Lamorak: Hold it right there! Take my life instead!
Aglovale: What? Lamorak!
Silver Beast: And you are?
Aglovale: When did you get here?
Lamorak: Really, Aggy? Now you're making airtight arguments to beasts now? You get on my nerves.
Aglovale: Fool! Don't do anything rash!
Lamorak: You're the one who told me to use my words.
Lamorak: And you're one to talk about doing anything rash!
Aglovale: Enough of your prattling! This time you won't do as you please!
Percival appears from behind the two arguing brothers.
Percival: Haaa!
Aglovale: !
Percival: Monster, get away from my big brothers!
Silver Beast: Humph!
The Silver Beast lets out an irritated sigh of air sending Percival flying.
Percival: Aghh!
Aglovale: Percival!
Lamorak: Percy!
Silver Beast: Noisy peas in a pod... Reminds me of the three s—
Percival: I-I'm sorry!
Percival: I... Please... Forgive me...
Silver Beast: Hm? Are these strawberries?
Percival: They're Mother's favorite... Please take them instead!
Percival offers the strawberries to the snowy silver beast.
Silver Beast: ...
Silver Beast: Suddenly... I've lost interest in all of you.
Silver Beast: I suppose these small red lives are enough to satiate me.
Percival: Really? Thank you!
Lamorak: No way! You'll take the strawberries instead?
Aglovale: Perchance... This was all a ruse...
Silver Beast: Perchance...
And so the beast devours the strawberries with one fell swoop of his tongue.
Silver Beast: These were after all something important... Now climb onto my back.
The three brothers do as they're told.
Lamorak: Let's get this show on the road!
Percival: Wow... So soft!
Lamorak: What the heck! Why are you all fluffy!
Aglovale: You have our gratitude.
Silver Beast: Hold onto me! We ride!
The beast beats its beautiful wings and ascends into the sky, rending the air as it climbs higher and higher.
As the brothers go higher and higher into the air, they cannot contain their excitement as they see the land from new heights.
Percival: This is so cool! We're flying!
Lamorak: Ye-ha! The wind feels amazing!
Aglovale: Look there! The forest we were in! It's so small now!
Lamorak: And over there! That's our town! And look! I can see the castle!
Percival: Whoa! The town looks so pretty at night!
Aglovale: This beauty... is what we shall always protect...
Lamorak: Haha... Sounds like a pain in the—
Lamorak: You know what! If you tone it down a little bit, I'm not opposed to helping you out.
Aglovale: All right... I shall try... But in return...
Aglovale: I need you to tone it up.
Lamorak: Haha! Tone it up? Nobody says that!
Lamorak: That's the spirit, Aggy!
Percival: Both of my brothers are awesome!
Silver Beast: Now then... This is where we part ways, little ones.
Lamorak: Hey! Don't be like that! Keep flying!
Lamorak: Huh... Why am I suddenly... so... sleepy...
Aglovale: Lamorak! Percival! Don't let go!
Percival: Aglovale... Lamorak...
Silver Beast: How long it has been since I've enjoyed myself in the night sky...
Silver Beast: Let us meet again, little sons of skyfarers...
Some time passes and the three hear a voice all too familiar to them.
While lost somewhere between reality and dream, that voice echoes in the distance.
Herzeloyde: Aglovale! Lamorak! Percival!
The Three: ...
Percival: M-mom...
Aglovale: Is... this our room?
Lamorak: Huh? Why is Momma crying?
Herzeloyde: I'm so glad... You're all safe...
Herzeloyde cries in relief and gradually calms down.
Herzeloyde: Sob... You didn't come back!
Herzeloyde: It got late and the night was so dark, but none of you came back!
Herzeloyde: And now you're suddenly here in your room sound asleep...
Herzeloyde: I was worried sick!
Percival: Cough... Mom... I can't breathe...
Herzeloyde: Oh! I'm sorry little Percy!
Herzeloyde: But... Where have you all been?
Aglovale: I... can't remember...
Lamorak: Hm... That's odd... What were we doing?
Herzeloyde: Huh? What's this here? It's shining.
Herzeloyde takes something stuck to their clothing.
Herzeloyde: A silver feather? This is beautiful!
Percival: It shines so bright!
Lamorak: This thing is sparking something inside me, but I don't know what...
Aglovale: Yes... I feel like I've seen it somewhere else before...
Herzeloyde: Hehe... Well that's all right. As long as my boys are safe.
Herzeloyde: Yawn... Now that I know my children aren't in danger's way, I feel a little sleepy...
Herzeloyde: This time don't go disappearing in the middle of the night, all right?
The Three: Okay!
Percival: Night, Mom.
Aglovale: Good night, Mother.
Lamorak: Nighty night, Momma.
Herzeloyde: Hehe. Night, night. Don't let the bed bugs bite... My precious angels...
Herzeloyde: May you all have sweet dreams...
Aglovale: And so this incident was considered a spiriting away of origins unknown.
Aglovale: But dreams of riding a snowy silver beast would not be an uncommon occurrence from that night onward.
