Food and Joy
One day aboard the Grandcypher, Rei happens upon Yaia, Lyria, Vyrn, and (Captain) in the mess hall. While Yaia is serving Rei a plate of fried rice, the young cook lets slip the crew's plan to hold a surprise welcome party for the NERV pilots. Rei promises to keep the party a secret from the others, prompting Yaia to invite the pilot to help prepare the food. Although uncertain, Rei accepts after some gleeful reassurance from Yaia.
Some time after the events at Hitakami Island, the NERV pilots once again find themselves aboard the Grandcypher.
Rei: ...
Rei, looking down at the contents of a shelf, reaches for a beaker propped next to a medicine bag.
Rei: ...
Lyria: Wow! It tastes just as good as I thought it would!
Vyrn: Yaia, your fried rice has always been delicious, but you outdid yourself this time!
Yaia: Hehe! I'll make more if you want, so eat up!
Lyria: Oh, Rei! Are you hungry too?
Rei: No.
Vyrn: So, whatcha doing then? You've got something in your hand.
Rei: I came for water.
Vyrn: And you're going to use that science doohickey? Can't you just use a pitcher?
Rei: I don't have one.
Yaia: We've got a few in the kitchen! I'll grab one for you!
Yaia: And I'll make you a plate of my special fried rice while I'm at it!
Rei: Fried rice?
Rei glances at the venerable feast laid before (Captain) and the others.
Rei: I'm not—
Yaia: Just hold your horsies! I'll be back quick!
A gleeful Yaia bounds off to the kitchen. A scant few moments later, she returns bearing the fruits of her cooking.
Yaia: I'm baaack! I made extra for everyone!
Lyria: Yay! Mine's extra large!
Yaia: And here's a super special one for you, Rei—without meat, just the way you like it!
Rei: How...
Rei: How did you know I don't eat meat?
Yaia: Well, you see, Lowain and his friends told me.
Yaia: They wanted to make the NERV welcome party really fun, so they did some sneaky research and found out what kinds of food everybody thinks are yummy or yucky!
Lyria: Oh no! Yaia! The welcome party was supposed to be a surprise!
Rei: A welcome party...
Vyrn: Uh oh, cat's out of the bag now...
Yaia: Oops... I'm sorry... I forgot it was a surprise...
Rei: I won't tell Shinji and the others.
With the secret freshly secured, Rei lifts a spoonful of the rice to her lips.
Rei: ...!
It's good...
It's good...
Yaia: You like the fried rice, Rei? Great!
Lyria: Then let's make extra helpings for the welcome party! I'll have to practice your recipe, Yaia!
Rei: Practice...
Yaia: We'll cook a lot and make you and all your NERV friends happy!
Rei: I see...
Yaia: Hm...
Yaia: Want to try making it?
Rei: Me?
Yaia: Yeah, we could make it together. I'm good at cooking, so I'll teach you how if you want!
Yaia: But if you don't want to, that's okay too...
Rei: ...
Rei: It did taste good...
Yaia: Yeah?
Rei: I'll join.
Yaia: Yay! Leave everything to me!
And thus did Professor Yaia's Intro to Fried Rice find itself a new pupil.
Food and Joy: Scene 2
Rei and Lyria begin learning the art of making fried rice under the watchful eye of Yaia. Although Yaia is a strict instructor, she shares how cooking for others brings her joy. This is a revelation for Rei, who realizes through Yaia's words that cooking is not only capable of spreading happiness, but brings happiness to the cook as well. Motivated by this new perspective, Rei, Lyria, and Yaia work even harder to perfect their fried rice.
Like smoke billowing on the battlefield, steam fills the kitchen.
Yaia: Cut in a straight line!
Lyria: Got it! I'll handle the scallions!
Yaia: Rei, you do the lettuce!
Rei: Okay.
Lyria: The scallions are cut! Now I'll crack the eggs!
Yaia: Next, preheat the frying pan!
Rei: ...
Lyria: The eggs have been whisked! Ready for deployment!
Yaia: Okay, add them first!
Lyria: Deploying eggs!
Rei: And the lettuce.
Lyria: It's fry time!
Rei: Understood.
Using a wooden spatula, Rei vigorously stirs the ingredients, occasionally tossing them into the air.
Vyrn: Wow. Some popped out of the pan, but you look like a pro. Wouldn't have guessed you had a knack for this, Rei!
Yaia: ...
Lyria: All done!
Rei: All done.
(Captain), Vyrn, and Yaia sit at the table, with Lyria and Rei's freshly made fried rice spread before them.
Rei: Please enjoy.
Vyrn: Munch, munch...
Lyria: Oh my...
Rei: ...
Vyrn: Hmm...
Rei: You don't like it?
Vyrn: Huh? Wh-what do you mean? It's totally edible!
Lyria: So... does that mean it's delicious?
Vyrn: Yeah, delicious... In its own way.
Rei: In its own way?
Lyria: Should we be happy or sad about that?
Yaia: Munch, munch...
Lyria: So, Yaia... What do you think?
Yaia: Yeah. We need to start over.
Rei: Why?
Yaia: First things first. When you're making fried rice, you can't shake the frying pan.
Rei: But I saw that technique in a book.
Yaia: If it's one of those big, round pans it's okay, but not for a normal frying pan.
Yaia: Also, maybe the way you cut the ingredients wasn't so good either. Also, also—
Vyrn: There's more?
Yaia: Of course! Yummy fried rice is about the journey, not the destination!
Yaia: But you know, as long as everyone says it's delicious. That's a pretty good destination!
Rei: ...
Yaia: The eaters get to have full bellies and the cookers get to have full hearts—everyone's happy!
Rei: Eating together is a joyful experience. And when you cook, it spreads joy...
Rei: Even for the cook?
Yaia: Exactly!
Rei: ...
Yaia: Hey, once upon a time, this adult saw me cooking and said, "She's so young... Poor thing."
Yaia: She felt bad cause my dad's sick and my mom's not here anymore, so I had to cook for myself.
Yaia: But I didn't mind one bit. Dad always made sure to tell me he loved my cooking, so it was all worth it!
Rei: ...
Yaia: Besides, since I joined the crew, it's been a lot of fun making food with Lowain and everybody!
Yaia: That's why I didn't mind that adult's comment, and it's why nobody needs to feel sorry for me—I just want to keep cooking!
Rei: I see...
Rei: Cooking brings connections.
Yaia: Connections?
Rei: It brings joy. To both the cook, and the recipient of the cooking.
Lyria: Let's keep practicing, Rei! I want to hear the people we love say they love our cooking!
Rei: All right.
Yaia: Then back to the frying pan! We'll start from scratch, but this time we'll take it even slower!
Rei & Lyria: Okay.
Okay!
Okay!
Once more they fire up the stovetop, but the kitchen grows warmer not from the flame... but from their heartfelt enthusiasm.
Food and Joy: Scene 3
The day of the welcome party arrives, and Shinji, Asuka, and Mari are the first to show up. Misato, Ritsuko, and Maya—brought by Nicholas and Robomi—pay a surprise visit, and after everyone settles in their seats, the fried rice is served. The partygoers are astonished by the taste and are further stunned when they learn that Rei helped prepare the meal. A proud Yaia praises her newest pupil, while a tenderly smiling Rei thanks her young instructor.
On an afternoon like any other, Shinji, Asuka, and Mari are suddenly summoned to the Grandcypher's mess hall.
Vyrn: Oh! You guys finally made it!
Asuka: Hmph! You've got some nerve calling us out of the blue! At least tell us why we're here!
Mari: You're as lively as ever, Your Highness. But maybe put the claws away for now.
Shinji: Ayanami...isn't here yet, I guess. Haven't seen her all morning... Where could she be?
Vyrn: Oh, she'll be here, don't you worry!
Vyrn: More importantly... You all set, (Captain)?
(Captain) gives a nod while drawing a deep breath.
Choose: Welcome to the crew!
After the cheer, various crew members seem to appear from every corner, launching confetti into the air.
Asuka: Whoa! Wh-what's going on!
Mari: Wow! It's really happening! A surprise party!
Vyrn: Bingo! Come on, your seats of honor await you!
As Shinji and the other pilots take their places, the crew brings dish after dish from the kitchen to the table.
Last but not least, carrying a platter in both arms, is the most curious of the food runners.
Shinji: Ayanami!
Rei: Good morning, Shinji.
Asuka: Commander's Pet? What are you doing?
Rei: Serving a meal.
Yaia: Here's the first dish! It's delicious and nutritious, and made with lots of love! Special fried rice!
Mari: Hold on... Are you the Yaia I've been hearing so much about?
Mari: Then that means... This is your special fried rice!
Asuka: Oh yeah, you kept going on about how you wanted to try it.
Mari: Who wouldn't? She's the crew's gifted six-year-old cook, who formulated the most mind-blowing fried rice ever! Just savor that aroma!
Shinji: Wow, is it really that good? That's amazing for her age.
Yaia: Um, well... I am Yaia but... the fried rice was—
Nicholas: Sorry, guys! We're finally here!
Shinji: Oh? Nicholas, and Robomi too?
Robomi: Long time no see, Shinji. I am pleased to see that everyone is in high spirits.
Nicholas: Yeah, haven't seen you guys since Hitakami Island! Sorry for the impromptu get-together! I'm just glad we could make it!
Vyrn: Wait, aren't you the one who suggested a party in the first place? Like a half-welcome, half-"mission accomplished" shindig?
Shinji: A "mission accomplished" party?
Nicholas: You betcha! Besides, we're not the only ones who came speeding over aboard the Rashomon Research Vessel.
Robomi: We wanted to properly welcome our guests, so we paid a visit to Hitakami Island on the way over.
Misato: And how kind of them to pay us a visit!
Shinji: Misato! Ritsuko and Maya!
Misato: Hey, hey! Sorry to keep you waiting. Work kept piling up.
Ritsuko: Hope you don't mind a few more guests. Thanks for the invite—and I have to say, this ship's facilities sure are fascinating.
Maya: So this is what a skyfarer's airship looks like on the inside, wow...
Yaia: Everyone's got their seats, right? We'll bring out the fried rice!
Rei: ...
As Shinji and the others continue their catching up, Yaia and Rei begin setting healthy portions of fried rice in front of each guest.
Curious and hungry, the guests have their first bite.
Honored Guests: ...!
Misato: It's... It's so good!
Ritsuko: How do I describe this... It's got that special something, more like a home cook than a pro chef.
Mari: Behold, Your Highness! The unbelievable deliciousness of Yaia's fried rice!
Asuka: What! Are you her spokeswoman now?
Asuka: But, yeah, I'll admit it's pretty good...
Rei: Shinji, do you like it?
Shinji: Yeah! There's no meat in it, so you should have some too, Ayanami. Not trying this would be a crime!
Rei: I'm glad you think so.
Shinji: ...?
Vyrn: Hehe. Listen up, guys. The one who actually made that fried rice is—
Lyria: Yaia! Rei! Come quickly!
Lyria: We've gone through our ingredients already, and now the kitchen is struggling to keep up! We need reinforcements on the double!
Rei: Coming.
Lyria: Ah, w-wait! Rei, you're supposed to be a guest, right?
Lyria: So, um, you should sit and enjoy the party! I'll handle your part instead!
Rei: I'll come help.
Lyria: B-but...
Rei: I want to prove Yaia's point correct.
Rei leaves the table and heads over to the bustling kitchen, where she immediately begins strategizing with the other cooks.
Ritsuko: Well, this is surprising. Since when has that girl been able to talk in a crowd?
Misato: She's evolved—into an extrovert!
Misato: Shinji, explain! What happened to Rei?
Shinji: H-how would I know? I'm just as surprised as you...
Yaia: Rei practiced lots in the kitchen, and before she knew it, she made friends with everybody!
Asuka: Practice? In the kitchen?
Mari: Ah, I see what's going down. She got us good. This rice was prepared by—
Choose: Yep. It was Rei.
Honored Guests: Whaaat!
After absorbing the revelation, the entire table of honored guests sits dumbfounded.
Meanwhile, Yaia returns to the kitchen just in time to bask in the small victory.
Yaia: Ahah! Hey, Rei!
Rei: What is it?
Yaia: Great job!
Rei: ...
Rei: Ah. Thank you.
Standing in the very kitchen where she was trained in the ways of fried rice, Rei offers Yaia a tender smile.
