Blue Sea Discoveries

When Shinji expresses interest in the Sky Realm's blue oceans, the crew brings him on a vacation to Auguste. On the beach, he has a surprising encounter with the mermaid Thalassa, who compares the young hero to her lover, Raiden.

A few days have passed since the pilots of NERV joined the crew.
The air drones with idle conversation when, all of a sudden, Shinji lets loose a shout of surprise.
Shinji: Hold on! You're telling me the Sky Realm has oceans too?
Vyrn: Yeah! There's an island called Auguste that's got a huge ocean.
Lyria: We go as a crew for vacation every summer.
Shinji: I see. What is Auguste like?
  1. Why not go see for yourself?
  2. It's kinda crazy. Wanna see?

Choose: Why not go see for yourself?
Shinji: And have the whole crew set sail just because I was curious? I couldn't...
Lyria: Don't worry. The crew loves an excuse to visit Auguste!
Vyrn: 'Sides, we're ripping through jobs like nobody's business, thanks to the NERV gang. I'd say you've earned a vacation.
Shinji: Well... If that's how you really feel, then sure. Let's do it.

Choose: It's kinda crazy. Wanna see?
Shinji: Crazy?
Vyrn: Uh... So, how do I put this? Auguste's got some wild stuff swimming in its waters.
Shinji: Wait, does that mean there are a lot of fish there?
Lyria: Auguste does have plenty of fish, but it also shelters more than your average share of primal beasts.
Lyria: There are also things more, um... exotic than primals.
Vyrn: There's so much crazy in Auguste that puttin' it to words wouldn't do it justice.
Vyrn: It'd be much quicker to show you. To the skies!
Shinji: Huh? Wait!

Shortly after, the Grandcypher takes to the air, with its prow pointed toward Auguste.
Shinji: Incredible... There really is an ocean!
Shinji wades into the surf, entranced by the pinpoints of light winking magically from the waves.
Shinji: Whoa... I can't believe how many fish there are.
Rei: Likewise.
Asuka: Hmph. Stop making such a big deal. People will think you're a couple of bumpkins.
Asuka: The number one rule of sightseeing is to act sophisticated.
Shinji: But... We kind of are bumpkins.
Asuka: Shut up! I'm gonna get associated with your loser-ness!
Mari: Give him a break—we're on vacation. I think some extra excitement is called for.
Mari: Besides, Highness, I see some light and wonder in your eyes too, you know.
Asuka: This is a new experience for me. I'm not gonna lose my mind over everything, but I fully mean to enjoy myself.
As daylight burns on, most of the crew retire to beachside huts, but Shinji is still held captivated by the ocean.
Shinji: (I wonder if more than fish live in these waters... Maybe some turtles or penguins.)
Shinji peers intently into the water's depths.
Shinji: Hm?
Shinji: (Is it just me... or is that the shadow of a giant fish?)
Shinji: (Wha...
It's even bigger than I thought.)
Shinji: (Oh no... It's not a primal, is it?)
Shinji: H-huh?
Thalassa: (Captain)!
Shinji: Aaagh!
Thalassa: Glub-blub-blub?
Vyrn: I think I heard somethin'! What's going on?
Vyrn: Oh. It's just you Thalassa. Long time no see!
Shinji: U-um... (Captain)? Wh-who... or wh-what is... this?
  1. A friend.
  2. A mermaid named Thalassa.

Choose: A friend.
Shinji: A friend?
Lyria: Yep. Her name's Thalassa. She's a friend of the crew!
Vyrn: She's a mermaid. You don't see a lot of her kind splashin' around, so I get why you're surprised.
Vyrn: She's a real one though. You'll warm up to her in no time!

Choose: A mermaid named Thalassa.
Shinji: A... mermaid? Like the kind you hear about in fairy tales?
Vyrn: Wait, they have mermaid stories over in your world too? That's wild.
Shinji: Yes? I'd pictured something a little... different though.
Vyrn: I mean, mermaids aren't exactly easy to find. I can see how facts would get mixed up.
Lyria: Thalassa is just the sweetest, most wonderful person!
Lyria: I'm sure you'll grow to love her!
Continue 2
Shinji: Is that so... Um, Thalassa?
Flustered, Shinji turns to Thalassa and bows his head.
Shinji: Sorry... for being rude.
Thalassa: Glub? No, please, don't worry about it! I should be the one apologizing!
Thalassa: I heard from my friends in the shallows that (Captain) had dropped in. I got so excited I shot straight over here...
Thalassa: The locals have gotten used to seeing me like this, so I completely forgot to turn human first.
Thalassa: But I know seeing someone like this for the first time can be a shock! So promise me you'll stop feeling bad, okay?
Shinji: Okay... Thanks.
Thalassa: Good. Now, what brings you all to Auguste?
Vyrn: Oh. Shinji wanted to check out our oceans.
Vyrn: Right, Shinji?
Shinji: Right. It's been eye-opening. I never knew oceans could be so beautiful...
Thalassa: Aw! It's nice to hear people gush about my home!
Thalassa: Wait, Shinji. Why don't I take you on a tour of open waters?
Thalassa: There's a tiny part of me that wants to make up for earlier, but mainly, I just want you to get to know the ocean better!
Vyrn: Hey, sounds like a plan! Go for it, Shinji! The crew will be right there with you.
Shinji: O-okay... Couldn't hurt, right?
Before long, Shinji finds himself in one of the small boats harbored at the beach, following Thalassa into open waters.
As they travel, the crew regales the mermaid with tales from Hitakami Island.
Thalassa: Evas, huh? There sure are some mind-boggling things in your world.
Vyrn: Wanna check 'em out later? They're like giant people—it's awesome!
Thalassa: And you pilot those giants into battle, Shinji? At your age? That's incredible!
Shinji: You're giving me too much credit. I didn't choose to be a pilot...
Shinji: And when I fight, I'm just focused on survival... I can't look out for people the way (Captain) does.
Thalassa: Hehe. You know, you kind of remind me of Raiden way back when.
Shinji: Raiden? Who's Raiden?
Thalassa: Oh! Curious, are you? I can introduce you to him if you want!
Shinji: Uh, I just asked about him because his name came up...
Thalassa: Don't get all shy on me now. Is it even a vacation if you don't make new friends along the way?
Thalassa: And Raiden is a real treasure. You're guaranteed to get along!
Shinji: Oh. Um...
Shinji: Then I'd like to meet him?
Thalassa: Say no more!
And so Shinji finds himself jostled, cajoled, and steered into a meeting with Raiden.
The group finishes their tour of the ocean and heads back to shore.

Blue Sea Discoveries: Scene 2

Thalassa introduces Shinji to Raiden at the sumo dojo. Upon learning that Shinji pilots Evas to keep his friends safe, Raiden calls the boy a hundred times more courageous than himself. Before Shinji can fully take in the compliment, however, the group is called to attention by a beachside scream.

Back on land, the crew arrive at the sumo dojo for lunch at Thalassa's invitation.
Thalassa: Shinji, meet Raiden!
Shinji: Uh, nice to meet you. I'm Shinji Ikari...
Raiden: The man of the hour! Thalassa was just telling me about you!
Raiden: I hear you're an ace behind the controls of an "Eva." Now that sounds like a got-tsan piece of equipment!
Shinji: ("Got-tsan"? I guess that must be a compliment...)
Shinji: Um, it's true that I pilot Evangelion Unit 01...
Shinji: But I'm not an ace. Far from it, actually...
Raiden: Hah! Humble one, aren't you, Shinji?
Raiden: I must say though, hearing you downplay your skill only further intrigues me...
Raiden: I know! Why don't you join me for training?
Shinji: Me? Train with you? I can't fight outside of an Eva...
Raiden: Hah! Please! If you can handle that beast of a machine, you can handle the path of a sumo warrior!
Shinji: A sumo warrior?
Raiden: Ah, right. You're not from here. Stands to reason you don't know what a sumo warrior is.
Raiden: Sumo is an ancient martial art, which gives mortal flesh the strength to contend with primal beasts.
Raiden: Those who master its teachings are known as sumo warriors.
Thalassa: With enough training, a sumo warrior can split a mountain with one thrust of a hand, or slide across the seas with with a few sweeps of the feet!
Thalassa: Raiden worked himself to the bone so he could reach that level.
Raiden: That's enough, Thalassa. I've still got a ways to go—can't have you gassing me up like that.
Shinji: Split mountains and slide across the seas?
Shinji: (She really thinks I'm similar to someone who can do all that? Not a chance.)
Shinji: Uh, Thalassa? What about me reminds you of Raiden?
Thalassa: Hm... Well, in a seashell, I'd say it's your heroism.
Thalassa: Oh! We have to catch you up, Raiden! Shinji put his life on the line for his friends—and he's just a kid!
Thalassa recounts Shinji's battles on Hitakami Island.
Thalassa: The crew told me all about it! Isn't the NERV team amazing?
Shinji: That's the thing though. I couldn't have done any of that on my own.
Raiden: Hm... I see. Thalassa, I think Shinji has a point. The two of us aren't so similar after all.
Shinji: R-right?
Raiden: Right. Shinji, you're a hundred times more incredible than me!
Shinji: What! There's no way!
Shinji: First off, you'd completely crush me in a fight. Then, there's your confidence...
Raiden: I'm going to stop you there. Have you forgotten that you pilot giant war machines to keep your friends safe...
Raiden: Or that you risk your life constantly? If I was your age, I'd be paralyzed with fear.
Raiden: But loyalty keeps you going. And I'm sure your victories are no flukes either.
Raiden: You're as got-tsan as any man I've met! Bear yourself with pride!
Shinji: Cough!
Shinji: B-but... I needed Kaworu to convince me to fight.
Shinji: I could never push myself to train—or start a dojo the way you did.
Raiden: Of course not. You're a kid. Self-discipline comes with age.
Raiden: I was pretty rough myself before I met Thalassa and the crew. It's embarrassing, honestly.
Raiden: I'd go around the island picking fights... Even when deep down, all I wanted was to realize my dad's dream of becoming a great fisherman.
Raiden: Yet somehow, in the end, I found my way.
Raiden: And I'm sure you can too.
Shinji: I can?
Thalassa: Definitely! You two really are alike.
Thalassa beams at the two peas in a pod, when...
Terrified Voices: Ahhh!
Shinji: Were those... screams?
Raiden: They came from the shoreline! Shinji, Thalassa, on the double!
Shinji: G-got it!
Shinji emerges from the dojo to a sight that can only be described as something from a delirious daydream.

Blue Sea Discoveries: Scene 3

The group rushes outside to see deepflight oysters terrorizing the beachgoers. As Raiden holds down the shoreline, Shinji and the NERV pilots take down the mollusks in their Evas. After their victory, Raiden praises Shinji once again and predicts a bright future for the boy in the Sky Realm.

Outlined by the glare of the sun, several hulking shadows rocket from open sea toward the shoreline.
Deepflight Oysters: ...!
Shinji: Wh-whaaat?
Shinji: (I can't be seeing this right... Are giant shells speeding toward us?)
Raiden: I don't get it. Deepflight oysters almost never venture into the shallows!
Raiden: Could the tourists have provoked them somehow?
Shinji: Oysters? Those are oysters?
Shinji: (Sure, they look like oysters... But they're way too big!)
Shinji: (And let's not even get into flight physics...)
Raiden: Indeed. Deepflight oysters are bivalve monsters that commonly attack from the air.
Raiden: See how fast their shells spin? That'll do a lot of damage to your average person.
Raiden: And don't get me started on their sheer size of this bunch. The beach is in danger!
Shinji: What do we do?
Vyrn: Hey, I've been looking for you three! Thalassa, pot's about to boil, so—
Vyrn: Wait, deepflight oysters? The heck's going on!
Raiden: Vyrn, you lifesaver! Get (Captain) and Lyria. We need to evacuate these vacationers!
Raiden: Round up the NERV pilots too. There's a fight cooking!
Vyrn: Copy! I'm on it!
Thalassa: I'll assist with the evacuation. I'll leave the rest to you, Raiden.
Raiden: I'll get things under control!
Raiden: But I hope I can get your help with that, Shinji.
Shinji: M-mine?
Raiden: You've seen the size of those monsters. Most people could never go head-to-head with one. That's where Evas come in.
Raiden: I'll hold the shoreline and keep the oysters from making landfall for as long as possible.
Raiden: In that time, I want you and the rest of the Eva pilots to take them down. Think you can handle it?
Shinji: Of course. This beach is safe with us!
Asuka: All right, go time! I just have to crack open those weird-looking shells, right?
Mari: There's kind of a lot. This is going to take all of us.
Shinji: Yeah... We'll need our Evas too.
Rei: Agreed. We must return to the ship, posthaste.
Mari: Oh, don't you worry your pretty head about that. Right, Lyria?
Lyria: Oh! Right. The Evas are all sunbathing on the beach!
Shinji: Sunbathing? But... But why?
Lyria: I just thought they'd like a view of the ocean...
Mari: I helped move them. Evas having a little fun in the sun—isn't that idea just the cutest?
Rei: Is it?
Raiden: Save the talk for later! I need you in those Evas as soon as possible!
Raiden: It's only a matter of time before this entire beach becomes food for oysters!
Asuka: Not if we fry 'em first. Hey, Idiot Shinji. You ready or what?
Shinji: R-ready!
Raiden: Dosukoooi!
Raiden's stomps seem to cow the oysters and they slow their speed.
Raiden: All right! Let them have it!
Asuka: That was always the plan! Haaah!
Rei: Target acquired.
Mari: Eat this!
Deepflight Oysters: ...!
Shinji: It's gonna be fine... I'll get every last one of them.
Shinji: I'll end this now.
Shinji: Haah!
Shinji: Did we do it?
Rei: Extermination of enemy forces confirmed.
Mari: Seems our Doggy cleared out the last of them.
Asuka: How could I let Idiot Shinji get the last hit...
Shinji: Let's just get back to shore. Raiden and the others will want a report.
Thalassa: Hey, amazing work pulverizing those oysters!
Thalassa: I've stewed them into a surprise chanko, so dig in!
Shinji: (We're... eating them?)
Lyria: Wow... It looks delicious!
Vyrn: This bowl's for you, Shinji. You fought hard, and now you feed hard!
Shinji: Uh, thanks. Here goes nothing... Nom.
Shinji: ...!
This is amazing! I've never had shellfish so amazing!
Raiden: Oh, you like it? Nothing beats fresh deepflight oyster, am I right?
Raiden: You showed some real got-tsan grit out there today, so eat yourself a winner's portion!
Shinji: Thank you.
Shinji: But I really can't take much credit. I just have great allies.
Raiden: Hah! There's that humility again! Listen, there's nothing wrong with taking pride in your strength now and again.
Raiden: There aren't many people who could shoot down multiple deepflight oysters, even with an Eva.
Raiden: I was watching you move during my stomps too. Your precision? Absolutely got-tsan!
Shinji: Really? I feel like Asuka's easily a far better pilot...
Raiden: She's a master—that's for sure. But you have just as much skill as she does!
Raiden: Honestly, you're such a catch I'd recruit you to my sumo class.
Shinji: Hahaha... Thank you.
Shinji: But, you know... That whole mess with the oysters has me thinking.
Shinji: Other than sumo class, I'd like to find more things I can do in this world.
Shinji: Who knows, maybe there's something else out there for someone like me...
Raiden: Don't worry. There's plenty of time to explore before your got-tsan ever after.
Raiden: Whether you want to be a sumo warrior or a skyfarer... The sky's your oyster!
Shinji: You think so?
Raiden gives Shinji a hearty slap on the shoulder, and a faint smile appears on the boy's face.
It's an expression that contains the first faint glow of self-confidence.
