Aliza hates it when her childhood friend Stan treats her like royalty. As she's scolding him for his mannerisms, she receives an invitation from her uncle, Aviza. However, a mysterious figure suddenly appears and abducts her.
???: Lady Aliza... Please forgive my intrusion.
???: My lady, your uncle wishes to speak with you regarding the family inheritance.
Aliza: Stan...
Stan: ...
Aliza: Stan, how many times do I have to tell you?
Stan: That's... My lady, I'm merely your guard, your servant...
Aliza: Sigh. Stan, please.
Stan: Lady Aliza, er, I mean... Give me a break...
Aliza: How many times do I have to tell you? Stop being so formal—
Aliza: ...!
Servant: Pardon the intrusion, my lady.
Servant: Are... Are you occupied at the moment?
Aliza: It's fine. What is it?
Servant: My lady. Lord Aviza has summoned you to his chamber regarding an urgent matter.
Aliza: I understand. Tell my uncle I'll see him shortly.
Servant: Understood, my lady. Also, regarding the issue of the rites to be performed on this occasion...

(Captain) and company are enjoying a leisurely meal when a commotion suddenly breaks out in the middle of town. In the midst of the chaos, the crew hears a scream and follows it to find a young Erune man under attack from monsters.
(Captain) and the crew are eating at an inn at Port Breeze.
Vyrn: Hm? It sounds pretty noisy outside...
Lyria: I wonder what's going on... Maybe we should check it out.
Shop Assistant: Sorry to keep you waiting! Here are the extra large pancakes you ordered!
Lyria: Once I finish these pancakes!
Vyrn: This ain't the time for that! What if it's a monster or primal beast?
Lyria: But... My pancakes...
Monsters: Groaaar!
Lyria: What's going on?
Townsperson: H-help us! Monsters suddenly appeared in the middle of the town!
Vyrn: Appeared, you say? Haven't they just wandered in by accident?
Townsperson: I've no idea! They just showed up right in the center of the town!
Vyrn: These kinds of monsters aren't supposed to be in Port Breeze!
Lyria: I don't understand... What's more, I can feel the presence of a primal beast...
???: Aaah!
Lyria: ...?
(Captain) and the crew follow their ears to the source of the scream.
They stumble upon an Erune boy under attack from monsters.
???: Urgh... How did it come to this? I guess someone like me doesn't have a chance of saving Lady Aliza...
Vyrn: Hey! You there! We're coming to help, so just hold on a little longer!
???: Who are you guys?
Lyria: A group of passing skyfarers! Just wait, we'll save you!

The young Erune man the crew rescues from the monsters is named Stan, who boasts of his fighting prowess, despite seeming rather nervous. When more monsters appear, (Captain) and company bring him along to face them.
???: I-I thought I'd catch 'em off guard and take care of 'em all at once, but, uh...
???: It looks like you guys know what you're doing!
Vyrn: Geez... What are you doing all by yourself out here surrounded by monsters?
???: No need to worry! I'm actually a skilled fighter myself, you know!
Monster: Groaaar!
Vyrn: Ugh, just great... There's more of them.
Vyrn: Good thing we have another seasoned warrior with us! What's your name?
Stan: My name? Uh, it's Stan, but...
Vyrn: All right! Let's do it, Stan! Here come the monsters! Prepare yourself!
Stan: Well, actually... I said I was skilled, but I meant, uh, more on the theory side of things, you know?
Monster: Groaaar!

(Captain) and the crew rescue Stan, who had predictably fallen into trouble again. There's no time to rest, however, as more monsters attack.
Stan: Whoa! B-back, you fiend! Get away from me! Aaah!
Monster: Grrr...
Stan: Phew...
Stan: N-not bad, (Captain)! Nothing I couldn't have handled myself, o-of course!
Vyrn: Heh! For a skyfarer, these monsters are pretty small-time, you know.
Stan: Oh, you're skyfarers, huh? No wonder. There certainly are lots of dangers in the skies...
Stan: I see! So that's the secret... Strengthening yourself through the constant thrill of danger!
Lyria: Well, I'm not sure if I'd put it that way... What do you think, (Captain)?
Stan: Then I must face danger also! For the sake of protecting my lady!
Stan: Watch me, (Captain)! Through battle, I shall become a true warrior today!
Lyria: Oh! Stan? He left...
Vyrn: I don't know about this guy...
Vyrn: Let's go after him, (Captain)!
Monster: Groaaar!
Stan: Guh! I guess this is it...

Vyrn: Geez... Just as I thought, he's in trouble again.
Stan: Y-you guys! You came to save me?

Stan, who has been saved by (Captain) repeatedly, decides to divulge his situation to the crew. Knowing that he wouldn't stand a chance against a primal beast on his own, he asks (Captain) for help.

Stan: (Captain)... Listen, I really need help from someone with your skill.
Stan: Yeah... You see, I work as a guard for the lady of a noble family...
Stan: But just a few days ago, she was kidnapped.
Lyria: What? How awful!
Stan: I know, and I totally messed up... I found out where she's being held, but...
Stan: I beg you! Will you help me to rescue her? Please!
Vyrn: I see what happened, but...
Vyrn: You're supposed to be her guard, right? Shouldn't you be saving her yourself?
Stan: If it were just the usual thugs, I'm sure I'd be able to do something by myself...
Stan: But what kidnapped her—that is, what kidnapped Lady Aliza was... a primal beast.
The crew's expressions immediately turn serious upon hearing Stan's words.
Unbeknownst to them, the abduction of Aliza would prove to be the trigger for a great upheaval in the land of dust.
The Cowardly Hero and the Captive Princess - Chapter 2: The Kidnapping Primal Beast - Episode 1
Having decided to help Stan, the crew heads toward the lair of the primal beast Nephthys, who is known for abducting people but not keeping a close watch over them. As such, Stan insists that as long as he has his newly found companions by his side, rescuing Aliza should be easily done.
Lyria: The primal beast Nephthys?
Stan: Yeah... She's the one who kidnapped Lady Aliza.
After the crew decides to help Stan, he leads them towards the lair of the primal beast, Nephthys.
Vyrn: Sounds like a weird primal beast though, kidnapping people to collect them...
Stan: It was the Astrals who created them, right? I mean, how could we possibly understand what the Astrals are thinking...
Stan: Thanks to her habit, our job is a lot easier! Nephthys collects her captives, but doesn't really keep a close eye on them!
Lyria: So what you're saying is, it might not be that hard to free the prisoners!
Stan: Yup! Wouldn't want to have to fight that primal beast after all!
Stan: All right! Onwards, team! With you heartening companions by my side, I'll rescue Lady Aliza in no time!
Lyria: Wait! I just felt the presence of a primal beast...
Stan: What? A primal beast? Nephthys? Wh-where?
Lyria: Huh? It vanished...
Stan: C-come on, don't scare me like that...
Stan: Wait, you can sense the presence of primal beasts?
Lyria: Oh, um... That's, uh...
Stan's seemingly innocuous question puts Lyria at a loss for words.

After hearing stories of (Captain) taking on the empire, Stan's faith in the crew has increased tenfold. However, his newfound confidence finds him surrounded by monsters again.
Vyrn: I think it's safe to tell Stan. It doesn't look like he has any connections with the empire or anything.
(Captain) explains to Stan how Lyria was freed from the clutches of the Erste Empire, and of her special powers.
Stan: W-wow, from the empire?
Vyrn: Well, it wasn't really a big deal or anything. Right, (Captain)?
Stan: No way! You guys must be really special to be going up against the Erste Empire!
Stan: In that case, it looks like we have nothing to fear then! Onwards, everyone!
Vyrn: Hey, slow down! I told you not to run off on your own!
Lyria: Eeek! Stan's surrounded by monsters!
Lyria: We have to save him! Let's go, (Captain)!
The Cowardly Hero and the Captive Princess - Chapter 2: The Kidnapping Primal Beast - Episode 3
Upon hearing that a primal beast is near, Stan attempts to retreat—admitting that he may run at the sight of the primal beast. However, (Captain) and company press ahead, pulling the seemingly fainthearted Stan along with them.
Lyria: Oh! I feel the primal beast's presence again...
Lyria: It's close... And it's not disappearing this time!
Stan: What? And after we came this far...
Stan: Shoot. We'll have to retreat.
Vyrn: What are you talking about? Don't you want to save that girl?
Stan: Of course I do! But... This is a primal beast we're talking about here!
Vyrn: Heh! What of it? You should never back down from an opponent, even a primal beast!
Stan: Don't be crazy! These things can wreck whole islands by themselves!
Stan: You guys may be able to fight them, but clearly you're something special...
Stan: I'm just a simple servant! I'm no great hero or anything... I don't have a magical destiny or something like you guys!
Stan: How could a run-of-the-mill kid like me hope to stand against that god-like creature?

Lyria: Don't think, Stan, just go! You can decide whether to fight or run once you get face-to-face with it!

Lyria: Come on, (Captain), let's go! More monsters are coming. It's dangerous to stay in one place for too long.

Having almost reached Nephthys's lair, (Captain) and company decide to take a load off upon finding an area with a scenic view. However, a mysterious woman suddenly appears, pointing the barrel of her giant gun directly at them.
Stan: Can you see it? That's Nephthys's lair.
Stan: We're pretty close now... Lyria, got an update on the primal beast's presence?
Lyria: Right! For a while now, it's been disappearing and reappearing.
Vyrn: A phantom primal beast, huh? At this rate, even if we're cautious, we might run into it at some point!
Stan: C-come on, don't scare me!
Lyria: Hm?
Stan: Wh-what is it, Lyria? The primal beast?
Lyria: No, not that... But I thought I saw someone.
Vyrn: Say what? There's someone else besides us in a dangerous place like this?
Lyria: I could be wrong... (Captain), did you see anyone over there?
Stan: As long as it's not that primal beast, I don't mind.
Stan: Anyways, let's keep on moving. We don't know when Nephthys may appear...
Vyrn: Now that's what I call a view! What do you guys say we take a break here from all the fighting?
Lyria: Good idea! I don't feel the primal beast's presence right now, either.
Stan: Nephthys could appear from anywhere! We can't let our guard down...
???: Stop right there! Move... and I'll shoot.
A mysterious girl appears behind (Captain)'s crew, the enormous barrel of her gun pointed at them.
With piercing eyes, she takes a thorough look at the crew, scrutinizing their every move.
The Cowardly Hero and the Captive Princess - Chapter 3: A New Companion - Episode 1
When (Captain) and company explain their situation to the mysterious girl, they discover that their objectives are similar. After welcoming her into their group, they once again sets off towards Nephthys's lair.
???: Who are you people? Why are you here?
The girl levels the gun steadily, questioning (Captain)'s crew.
???: You must leave this place immediately.
???: This area is home to a primal beast. It's not the kind of place for a picnic.
Stan: W-we didn't come here on a picnic! We're on a mission, and we're aiming for Nephthys's lair!
Vyrn: That's right! We've come to save a girl who's been kidnapped by her!
???: Kidnapped? Then perhaps our objectives are the same...
Lyria: Have you also come to save someone kidnapped by Nephthys?
???: Yes... It was my brother who was taken. Actually, this was some years ago now...
Lyria: Which means... We're all here for the same thing!
Vyrn: You should join us, then! The more companions we have, the better! Don't you agree, (Captain)?
???: Are you sure? I did just point a loaded weapon at you without asking questions...
Stan: It's natural to be a little cautious around here! In fact, that makes you all the more trustworthy!
Lyria: That's right! Plus, anyone who's here to rescue someone can't be a bad person!

Jessica: My name is Jessica. I'm from the Menean Empire. Pleased to make your acquaintance.

Stan: Yeah! We've almost reached Nephthys's lair!
Their goals aligned, Jessica and the crew decide to join forces and forge a path to the lair together.

Lyria asks Jessica about the comically large gun she carries, which turns out to be quite the peculiar weapon. Jessica admits that she actually wasn't confident enough to take on the primal beast alone, but not for the reason one would expect.
Lyria: Wow, Jessica... You're so strong. Isn't that gun heavy?
Jessica: Well... It was when I first tried it, but I suppose you can say I've grown accustomed to it!
Jessica: Once you get used to the weight, it's actually quite convenient. You can take out monsters without the need for bullets, for instance.
Lyria: Huh? It doesn't need bullets?
Jessica: I just hold it up like this and...

Jessica: Huh? Well... That's not exactly what I meant. I've driven off the primal beast several times before.
Stan: Say what? Th-then... What are you worried about?
Jessica: It's a little embarrassing to admit, but... I'm not very good with maps.
Jessica: I've known the location of Nephthys's lair, but when it came to following the directions on a map, I'm afraid...
Vyrn: Come to think of it, you said it was some years ago that your brother was taken...
Jessica: Ha ha... It took me quite some time to make it this far. How embarrassing.
Lyria: But you don't have to worry anymore! You're with us now!
Jessica: Hee hee, thank you. I realize it doesn't make up for the favor, but...

Stan loses heart after realizing he is the only one afraid of the primal beast. Jessica consoles him, telling him that no one is strong from the beginning. Upon hearing her encouragement, his resolve to save Aliza strengthens as the crew continues onward.
Stan: Man, I really am just a useless weakling after all...
Vyrn: Hey, what's with that attitude, Mr. Gloomy?
Lyria: I think he may be in shock after Jessica treated the primal beast so lightly as well...
Jessica: Oh dear... Did I do something wrong?
Vyrn: It's not your fault. This guy just has confidence issues! Anyway, let's head on. We won't get anything done by moping!
Stan: I'm just... just... ugh...
Jessica: ...
Jessica: Stan, can I have a moment?
Stan: Huh? Wh-what is it?
Jessica: You're afraid of fighting the primal beast, aren't you?

(Captain) and company have finally set foot in Nephthys's lair. Stan tries calling Aliza's name, but his voice merely echoes in the depths of the blackness. The party heads further into the cave.
Stan: Th-this is Nepthys's lair...
Vyrn: We finally made it!
Jessica: It certainly was a long journey.
Lyria: It'd be great if we find Aliza and your brother, Jessica!
Vyrn: All right, here goes! Let's do it, (Captain)!
With Jessica in their ranks, (Captain)'s party finally set foot in Nephthys's lair.
Confronted with a strange and unfamiliar place, (Captain)'s crew looks on in awe as they enter.
The Cowardly Hero and the Captive Princess - Chapter 4: The End of the Journey - Episode 1
When asked about Aliza, Stan describes his childhood friend as beautiful and equally vivacious—with unmatched skill in martial arts. Jessica reminisces about her own brother, whom Stan's attitude and naivete remind her of. As Stan struggles to keep up with the crew, Jessica offers Stan training using her cannon, but he suggests sometimes it just may be best to use what you're used to.
Having set foot into Nephthys's lair, (Captain)'s party is faced with a deserted blackness.
Lyria: Oh, this place is kind of scary...
Stan: Lady Aliza! Where are you? Please answer me!
Jessica: This may be the right place, but it looks like finding the abducted people won't be so easy...
Vyrn: We'll just have to search the whole place, then! Let's go, (Captain)!
Descending deeper into the cave, the crew takes out wave after wave of monsters.
However, there's no sign of Aliza or Jessica's brother in sight.
Jessica: Sigh... Just where could they be?
Lyria: By the way, what kind of person is Aliza?
Stan: Lady Aliza is... a beautiful woman, with an indomitable spirit.
Stan: She's always had a strong will, and is extremely skilled in the martial arts—enough to be chosen to inherit the secrets of a special art!
Stan: We've also been friends since childhood... She hasn't changed at all since then.
Lyria: Hee hee... Well then, all the more reason for you to save her quickly, right?
Lyria: So, Jessica, how about your brother? What's he like?
Jessica: My brother's personality... It's kind of hard to pin down exactly.
Jessica: I suppose he resembles Stan a little, both in his personality and naivete.
Jessica: That's why I just instinctively want to protect people like Stan.
Lyria: Wow! It must be wonderful, having siblings...

Realizing she hasn't sensed Nephthys's presence since they have entered the lair, Lyria suspects the primal beast is out somewhere, to Stan's delight. The crew continues to the innermost recesses of the lair.
Vyrn: Whew... We've searched almost everywhere... All that's left is up ahead.
Lyria: I haven't felt the presence of a primal beast the entire time we've been in this lair. Maybe it's out somewhere?
Stan: I'd like to settle this without a fuss, if possible. If it's not here, that's perfect.
Jessica: Yes... It would be wise to avoid any unnecessary fighting.
Stan: Let's go, (Captain)! I'm sure Lady Aliza is just ahead!

A primal beast finally appears before the crew. Stan shakes off all doubt and joins the crew in battle, having resolved to do whatever it takes to save Aliza.
???: ...
Stan: Is this... N-Nephthys?
Jessica: Is this... A primal beast? It looks more like some sort of cabinet...
Lyria: I-it's definitely a primal beast! I'm sure of it!
Stan: If I take this guy down, Lady Aliza will...
Come on, (Captain)! Let's do this!

Lyria: Stan, it feels like... you've become so brave!
Vyrn: Yeah, that's the spirit, Stan!
Vyrn: Come on, (Captain)! We've gotta show 'em what we've got, too!

The primal beast vanishes suddenly in the middle of battle, allowing Stan to reunite with Aliza at last. At Aliza's behest, (Captain) and the crew agree to escort her and Stan back to their homeland. Jessica, unable to find her brother, joins them as they set course for the Valtz Duchy.
???: ...!
Jessica: It vanished!
Jessica: I-it got away!
Jessica: What shall we do? The captured people... Where could they be?
Lyria: Huh?
Lyria: Look, there's someone back there!
Aliza: Stan?
Stan: M... My...
Stan: My ladyyy!
Vyrn: Stan! Look out! There's still a monster left!
Monster: Groooar!
Stan: D-darn it!
Stan: (I let my guard down... But I can't let it end here!)
Aliza: Doryaaa!
Jessica: I-incredible... That girl, she took out the monster with a single kick!
Aliza: Argh! This dress is such a pain!
Aliza: Whew... That's better.
Stan: M-my lady... Sob... I... I'm sorry... I-I just can't...
Aliza: H-hey now! Stop crying! See? This is why even kids make fun of you!
Stan: But it's just... You're safe, and that's the most important thing... Sniff...

(Captain) and company have defeated Aviza and restored peace to the Valtz Duchy. As they prepare to leave, Aliza and Stan catch them in time before they take off. Having renounced her nobility and inheritance, Aliza wishes to join the crew in order to travel the skies and become a stronger fighter. As for Stan, he pledges to take on (Captain) in a bout one day. Their vows made, the pair join (Captain) and company as they return to the skies.
(Captain) and the company defeat Aviza, finally bringing an end to the conflict that has been consuming the Valtz Duchy.
Aliza: I gotta say, you guys really helped us out here! Thanks so much!
Vyrn: Don't sweat it! There's no way we'd abandon someone in trouble!
Lyria: Exactly! I'm so glad we were able to stop the crisis before it escalated!
Stan: Um, about that...
Stan: It looks like some of the monsters Aviza released are still lurking around town.
Jessica: Well, it seems as though it'll still take some time before the town is completely safe again.
Aliza: Hahaha...
Aliza: Hey, (Captain). Sorry to bother you guys again, but...
Vyrn: Geez... Well, we already said we'd help out. No going back on it now! Let's get to cleaning!
Lyria: It would be a problem if the townsfolk were unable to live safely here... We have to help them out!
Aliza: Really? You guys are lifesavers!
Aliza: Once this is taken care of, I'll treat you all to a feast! Promise!
Lyria: Okay, let's keep it up just a little longer! Let's go, (Captain)!
To restore peace to the town, (Captain)'s crew strives to take care of the remaining monsters.
After finishing the job, the crew joins everyone in town in celebration.
Lyria: Ahh... Valtzian cuisine really is delicious!
Vyrn: And they served apples too... That's the way it oughta be!
Jessica: Hee hee... You two seem satisfied enough. Did you enjoy yourself too, (Captain)?
Stomachs full and energy replenished the next day, the crew is in high spirits.
Ready to depart from the Valtz Duchy, they board the Grandcypher.
Vyrn: All right! Let's head to our next destination then!
Aliza: Heeey! Hold on a minute!
Lyria: Oh! Isn't that Stan and Aliza?
Aliza: Thank goodness! We made it in time!
Aliza: Stan overslept, so we nearly lost our chance to see you off!
Stan: What? I'm pretty sure it didn't help that you kept asking for seconds at breakfast either!
Aliza: Don't forget what I told you... If you don't eat breakfast, you'll never grow strong!
Lyria: Hee hee... You two really are close, aren't you?
Aliza: I-it's not like that! Look, he's like a brother to me, I mean...

Synopsis
When monsters suddenly appear in Port Breeze, the crew encounters Stan, a timid Erune guard whose lady Aliza has been kidnapped by the primal beast Nephthys. Despite his fears, Stan asks for their help in rescuing her. Along the way, they meet Jessica, a gunner from the Menean Empire searching for her missing brother. After successfully infiltrating Nephthys's lair and rescuing Aliza, the group discovers that her kidnapping was orchestrated by her uncle Aviza as part of a larger plot to seize control of the Valtz Duchy. The crew must help Stan and Aliza stop Aviza's coup attempt and restore peace to their homeland.
Summary

The Grand Arsenal is overrun with the same monsters that attacked their airship, revealing that Aviza's monster taming hobby was actually preparation for his coup. The crew fights through hired thugs and controlled creatures as they pursue Aviza deeper into the ancient factory. When they finally confront him, Aviza reveals his belief that Valtz, with its ancient history of weapons development, deserves to rule the skies rather than the upstart Erste Empire. He attempts to manipulate Stan by pointing out that the Clythe family's downfall would separate him from Aliza.
When Aviza's psychological manipulation causes Stan to let his guard down, a monster attacks him, but Aliza takes the blow instead. After easily defeating the creature, she tells Stan that while their family will likely lose its status, she still wants to be with him regardless of titles or nobility.
