To the Top!

In her dreams, Umi goes mountain climbing on Lumacie Archipelago and incurs the wrath of the forest god. After a rude awakening, she becomes determined to meet the forest god in real life and ask for permission to climb through Lumacie's beautiful scenery.

Lumacie Archipelago is covered in vibrant greenery.
Deep in its thriving forests, the sound of a girl's footsteps can be heard.
Umi: Pant, pant... I must be close to the third level of this mountain...
Umi: Hmm. The greenery here is even lusher than I imagined.
Umi: Hehe. It was worth leaving Honoka and the others behind to get a better look at this mountain.
Refreshed by the scents of the plants and the caress of the breeze, she enjoys her walk along the mountain path.
However...
Nozomi: Umi... What are you doing here? I told you not to come here, didn't I?
Umi: Nozomi!
Nozomi: I told you... A god resides in this forest.
Nozomi: She's angry because you dared to enter her forest, Umi!
Forest God: ...
Umi: Ah... Aah...
In front of the terrifying forest god, Umi is unable to muster the courage to form words.
Nozomi: You better hurry and give a sincere apology. Otherwise...
Forest God: ...
Umi: Aah, ah...
Umi desperately tries to find her voice, but fear renders her incapable of anything more than a faint squeak.
Forest God: ...
Umi: Aaaah...
Forest God: ...!
Umi: Eek!
Umi: Then the dream stopped there, and I woke up in the middle of the night.
Honoka: S-so that's why you're tired.
Vyrn: I was wonderin' what the heck happened when we found you lookin' pale as a ghost in the lobby.
Kotori: Ahaha... That sounds like one scary dream, Umi.
Umi: I'm sorry. Lumacie's lovely scenery has been on my mind since we visited before the joint concert.
Umi: Even though I heard a god lives in that forest, I can't shake my desire to climb those mountains...
Umi: What should I do! I don't want to anger the god, but aaahh!
Vyrn: She's really givin' this a lot of thought.
Honoka: Umi kinda loses it when it comes to mountain climbing...
Lyria: Hmm... I don't think she'd get mad at Umi for going into the mountains though.
Vyrn: For sure. As long as Umi doesn't set anything on fire, she's good.
Kotori: What? You guys have met the god of the forest before?
Lyria: We actually know her fairly well...
Umi: If we end up going to Lumacie, would I be able to speak to her about what is or is not proper while climbing?
Lyria: Yes. I think she'd give you a warm welcome.
Umi: Really? You think so?
Umi: Uhm, (Captain). I have a serious request I'd like to make.
  1. We can go.
  2. We can't go.

Choose: We can go.
Umi: ...!
Umi: Are you serious, (Captain)! We can go right now? To the mountains? Wait, how did you know what I was going to ask?
Honoka: It was showing clear as day on your face, Umi...
Umi: Thank you very much, and I apologize for suddenly changing our destination on a whim.
Vyrn: Hey, we can take jobs on almost any island, and we actually already have some cargo to deliver to Lumacie!
Vyrn: So we're not going out of our way or anything! Right, (Captain)?

Choose: We can't go.
Umi: ...!
Umi: You're... right. We can't just change course because of one person's whim.
Umi: I'm sorry. I just wanted to try asking.
Lyria: Oh no! Sh-she really took that hard...
Kotori: It is a place she cared enough about that it showed up in her dreams.
Lyria: Uhm, (Captain)? We can stop for a little bit on Lumacie, can't we?
Lyria: If you're worried about money, I can ask the Knickknack Shack for a job there.
Upon hearing Lyria's suggestion, (Captain) blinks and suddenly pulls out a slip of paper. Written on it is a job the crew has already accepted.
(Captain)'s crew was asked to deliver a shipment of cargo to Lumacie, a place with fewer shipping options due to its sparse population.
Vyrn: I guess we're goin' to Lumacie anyway.
Lyria: Maybe we can do a little bit of climbing while we're there?
Vyrn: Judgin' by the look on (Captain)'s face, I think we got the time for that.
(Captain) explains that the crew hasn't taken any time off since the excitement on Tenacie. The plan is to give everyone a two- or three-day break while they're on Lumacie.
Umi: So this means...
Honoka: We can climb the mountains while we're off. Isn't that great news, Umi?
Vyrn: Geez, (Captain)! You really had us goin' there! Why didn't you just tell us right off the bat!
Continue 1
Umi: Th-thank you so much, (Captain)!
Umi: There's no time to waste. We'll have to prepare equipment, water, and food!
Grabbing some paper and a pen, Umi leaves them behind as she plans.
Vyrn: Y'know, she looks so calm usually, but her expressions change so fast. It's kinda funny.
Honoka: Now that you mention it, I guess they do. When we play Old Maid, her face always gives her away instantly.
Kotori: Hehe. Going up the mountains means having a picnic too, right? It's going to be so much fun.
Honoka: I heard climbing with Umi is pretty rough though. I wonder if we're gonna be okay...
Kotori: Whatever happens, I'm happy that we get to try. It's not often Umi says she wants to do something, after all.
Honoka: You know what? You're right. Even if things get a little tough, I'll do my best to have some fun.
Kotori: That's the spirit! Let's make some boxed lunches and bring them with us!
Vyrn: Looks like the three of 'em are gettin' into it.
Lyria: Are we joining them, (Captain)?
Though Lumacie is under Yggdrasil's protection, there are still monsters roaming about the island.
(Captain) decides to go with the second-years, just in case something happens.

To the Top!: Scene 2

(Captain) and company begin their ascent up the mountains with climbing gear and supplies prepped. When Honoka mentions wanting to see the view from the top of a mountain, Umi decides to make that wish a reality, turning their climb into an overnight camping trip.

Fully prepared for the journey ahead, (Captain) and company trek up the mountain path.
Umi: Breathe in... And out... I must say, the air and nature here are amazing!
And while the cool forest air and chirping birds are pleasant, the steep path is not.
Honoka: Gasp... I can't go on...
Umi: Honoka! We haven't even reached the first level of the mountain yet!
Honoka: Th-this is harder than running up the shrine stairs...
Umi: Honoka... I might be imagining things, but did you perhaps gain weight?
Honoka: N-no! No way! I'm totally fine! I'm tired, but not because of that!
Umi: Then let's go! A mountain is conquered one step at a time! Perserverance is key!
Honoka: Woo-hoo...
Honoka raises a weak fist in support of Umi's enthusiasm.
Lyria: Pant, pant... This is a little tough, but I'm happy to see Umi's having fun.
Vyrn: She sure is, isn't she? Her eyes are all lit up.
Weighed down by a backpack full of supplies, (Captain) adjusts the backpack's straps while watching Honoka and Umi.
Kotori: Uhm, (Captain)? Do you need help carrying anything?
  1. I got this.
  2. Please. I'm dying.

Choose: I got this.
Kotori: Really? You're pretty strong, aren't you, (Captain)!
Vyrn: Considerin' (Captain) grew up choppin' wood and running round the mountains for herbs, I'm not surprised.

Choose: Please. I'm dying.
Kotori: A-are you okay? You don't need to push yourself. Why don't you let me carry something?
Lyria: I'll help too!
Vyrn: Hold on a sec. Now that I'm takin' a closer look at you, you seem completely fine, (Captain).
Kotori & Lyria: What?
Sure enough, (Captain) seems sweaty but certainly not tired.
Vyrn: With all the huntin' and stuff (Captain) did in the hills growin' up, this is nothin'.
Continue 1
Lyria: Wow... I didn't know (Captain) did other things in addition to sword training.
Vyrn: Oh, did we never tell you? If there was stuff to get done, (Captain) got it done without relyin' on others.
Lyria: I see. It's nice to learn new things about you, (Captain).
Kotori: Hehe. I feel the same.
Kotori: That reminds me. (Captain), Vyrn, are you two childhood friends?
Vyrn: Yeah. I even saw (Captain) in diapers!
Kotori: It's the same for Honoka, Umi, and myself. We knew each other even before elementary school, and we've been together since.
Lyria: ...
Kotori: Lyria? Did I say something weird?
Lyria: Oh. Ahaha... I was just thinking I'm a little jealous.
Kotori: Hmm...
Kotori: You know, I only met the other members of μ's after entering high school.
Kotori: But they're just as important to me, and I know we're all going to be together from now on.
Kotori: I have the feeling you and (Captain) will be too. Isn't that just as amazing as having childhood friends?
Lyria: ...
Lyria: Ehehe... I sure hope we will be.
Lyria and (Captain) look at each other and exchange bashful smiles.
Honoka's Voice: Umi, are you serious!
Vyrn: The heck is Honoka shoutin' for?
(Captain) and the others catch up to a defeated-looking Honoka and a grave-faced Umi.
Kotori: Did something happen, you guys?
Honoka: ...
Honoka raises her hand and weakly points at the top of the mountain.
Umi: Well, Honoka was saying how she wanted to see the view from the top.
Honoka: Now hold on! It was just a spur-of-the-moment thing! This mountain is way too tall to actually do it!
Vyrn: We'd hafta camp out for two days if we did that.
Umi: We have our equipment and plenty of supplies. I think we can do it.
Kotori: Hmm... I don't know...
Umi: ...
Umi grows quiet and appears to think for a moment.
Umi: I want to try it. I want to see the view that Honoka wants to see.
Honoka & Kotori: ...
Kotori: Hehe. What do you say, Honoka?
Honoka: Okay. We're doing it. I'll do my best to keep up.
Umi: We've only got a little bit of time before the sun goes down, so we should find a place to camp soon.
By the time (Captain) and company find a nice open area for their tent and pitch it, the sun has already sunk below the horizon.
Vyrn: I'm amazed you could make somethin' like a tent though, Kotori.
Kotori: It wasn't anything that amazing. All I did was stitch some sails together and apply some waterproofing wax and oil.
Lyria: I wouldn't have thought of using wax! I'd love to learn sewing from you, Kotori!
Kotori: Really? I'm happy to hear that.
Umi: Zzz...
Everyone's gazes are drawn to the peacefully sleeping Umi who passed out immediately after eating.
Vyrn: She put on a brave face earlier, but I guess she must've been pretty tired.
Honoka: No, it's not that... Umi always sleeps the soundest out of everyone in μ's.
Honoka: Anyway, you think tomorrow's gonna be okay? I don't feel like I'm gonna make it...
Lyria: Ahaha, weren't you excited just a little bit ago?
Honoka: Yeah. I couldn't help myself since this is something Umi wants to do.
Vyrn: What do you mean by that?
Kotori: Ever since we were kids, Umi's always been reserved.
Kotori: So it made us happy to hear her tell us so plainly that she wants to do something.
Honoka: That's right. That's why we'll make sure she gets to do it.
Honoka: Breathing in the air at the top doesn't sound bad either.
Honoka: I'm just not sure I can make it there... I only got this far because Umi made sure I didn't give up.
Kotori: Umi always pulls you forward after all, Honoka.
Honoka: She sure does. Without all her scolding, I definitely wouldn't have made it this far...
Kotori: But you know, if you hadn't said anything about going to the top, then we would have never had this chance to try. I'm glad you did.
Honoka: Really? Then I guess I better pump myself up.
Honoka: Tomorrow, I'm gonna go all out!
Honoka: It's probably gonna be super hard and tiring, but if we take it one step at a time together, we'll definitely get to see the view up there!
Kotori: You said it! Lyria, Vyrn, (Captain), let's do our best!
Kotori: Wait, guys?
Vyrn & Lyria: Zzz... Mmm...
Lyria: Ah! I-I didn't fall asleep or anything! I'm completely fine!
Vyrn: The heck, we're outta apples?
Kotori: Hehe. Looks like everyone's pretty tired.
Honoka: I'm feeling sleepy too. Should we head to bed?
Kotori: That's a good idea. Umi did say "a mountain can only be conquered with plenty of rest!"
Their little meeting dissolves after that.
Gran is the Main Character

(Captain) puts out the fire and carries the sleeping Vyrn into their own tent.
Djeeta is the Main Character

(Captain) puts out the fire and carries the sleeping Vyrn into the tent with Kotori and the others.
Before falling asleep, (Captain) recalls Honoka's words.
To aim for the top with friends by your side every step of the way—
That's how (Captain)'s journey to the Island of the Astrals has been so far, and that's how it will continue to be.

To the Top!: Scene 3

Late into the night, (Captain) and company hear strange noises coming from inside the tent. To their shock, they find a group of myconids ruffling through their belongings, and panic breaks out among both monsters and people. In the chaos, one myconid makes the unfortunate mistake of tripping over Umi and waking her from slumber...

Late into the night, (Captain) suddenly wakes up.
A mysterious noise seems to be the reason why.
Gran is the Main Character

After a few more seconds of listening, (Captain) realizes the sound is coming from the girls' tent.
Kotori: Hey, Honoka. You're not making any weird noises, are you?
Djeeta is the Main Character

After a few more seconds of listening, (Captain) realizes the sound is coming from somewhere inside the tent.
Kotori: Hey, Honoka, (Captain). You guys aren't making any weird noises, are you?
Honoka: Don't look at me! I swear I'm not eating anything...
They sit up a bit and look around the tent.
Umi: Zzz...
Lyria: Zzz...
Everyone else is asleep, which means...
Honoka: D-did someone come into our tent?
Kotori: I'm scared... What if it's a monster?
They huddle together instinctively.
As soon as they do, a strange rustling sound fills the tent again. With great trepidation, they turn their heads toward the source.
Honoka & Kotori: ...
???: ...
A number of shadows hover in the corner of the tent, rummaging through everyone's belongings.
Honoka & Kotori: Aaahh!
Lyria: Huh? Wh-wha-what's wrong!
Umi: Zzz...
Gran is the Main Character

The screaming from the other tent brings (Captain) shooting to his feet.
Taking only the time to grab his sword, he rushes into the girls' tent.
Djeeta is the Main Character

At Honoka and Kotori's screams, (Captain) leaps up with her sword in hand and faces the dark shadows.
The next thing (Captain) does is illuminate the tent with magic, revealing—
Myconid: ...?
A bunch of myconids crowding around the crew's bags in search of food and water.
Myconid: ...!
The myconids also seem to have been startled by the screaming and are now in a panic.
Grabbing empty bags and spare blankets, the myconids throw anything they can get their hands on at the owners of the tent.
Honoka: M-monsters! Those are monsters! (Captain), there are monsters!
Kotori: H-help me, Honoka!
The panicking Honoka and Kotori take the hits and determinedly return fire, throwing the objects back at the monsters.
Lyria: Wh-what should we do?
With so many things flying through the air, (Captain) is unable to make a move.
In the chaos, however, something catches (Captain)'s attention.
Umi: Zzz... Mmm...
Despite the commotion happening all around her, Umi remains dead asleep. (Captain) has to admire the nerves of steel it must take to sleep through a ruckus like this.
But her slumber doesn't last long.
Myconid: ...!
Umi: Ow!
Honoka: Ah!
Kotori: Oh no, not Umi!
One of the myconids trips over Umi and lands in a heap on top of her.
Umi: ...
Umi rises unsteadily from the floor, her face masked by her long hair.
Honoka: Umi's up!
The aura that (Captain) senses from Umi is familiar, one easy to guess from years of experience.
Without a doubt, everyone is in imminent danger.
Umi: What... is going on?
Umi's intimidating aura surrounds the monsters. The whole tent is paralyzed in fear.
Umi: Didn't I say... we need to rest... for tomorrow?
The tent is completely silent when Umi finishes speaking. Even the bugs outside have ceased making any noise.
Umi: Is this another pillow fight... but this time with a giant stuffed animal?
Myconid: ...?
Perhaps still somewhat asleep, Umi grabs the fallen myconid by the arm.
Honoka: ((Captain)! Lyria! Get down!)
Kotori: (Quietly! No big movements!)
(Captain) follows Honoka and Kotori's gestured instructions and gets down on the ground.
Just in time too, because a second later and (Captain) would have been hit by the myconid that goes flying through the air and crashing into its friends.
Myconid: ...!
Umi: Heh heh... Hehehehehe...
Umi is the one who flung the myconid. The myconids that were hit turn tail and try to escape the tent.
Lyria: (What... happened to Umi?)
Kotori: (Umi doesn't take interruptions to her sleep very well...)
(Captain) has heard in the past that a person consumed by fear or rage can summon supernatural levels of strength.
Umi: I've got you now...
Myconid: ...!
Though Umi may look slender at a glance, she wields a bow taller than she is.
With all that strength, it is perhaps no surprise that she can toss monsters around as if they weighed no more than pillows.
Honoka: (Now's our chance! Get outta the tent!)
Not needing to be told twice, everyone sneaks past the confrontation between Umi and the monsters.
Myconid: ...!
The monsters who fled earlier are waiting fearfully outside.
The sudden appearance of (Captain) and company sends them back into a panic, and they rush at the campers.

To the Top!: Scene 4

Yggdrasil shows up just in time to save (Captain) and company from experiencing Umi's rampage. The next morning, Umi wakes earlier than anyone else and receives a gift from who she believes to be the forest god. Taking it as a sign, she eagerly aims for the top of the mountains once more.

Myconid: ...!
(Captain) and company barely have time to watch the monsters scramble away when something else appears before them.
Umi: ...
Like a demon king come to life from a storybook, Umi stands menacingly outside the tent.
Honoka: Wh-what do we do?
Kotori: We have to get her back to sleep somehow...
(Captain) and company freeze, conflicted at the prospect of having to strike their friend back to unconsciousness. Luckily, however, someone else comes to their aid.
Umi: ...
A flower appears before Umi's face. With one whiff of its fragrance, she instantly falls back asleep.
Lyria: Oh!
Yggdrasil: ...
Lyria: Yggdrasil! Your flower put Umi to sleep, didn't it!
Yggdrasil: ...!
Honoka: Don't tell me, this is...
Kotori: The god of the forest?
Lyria: Yes! It seems like she heard the commotion and came to help us.
Honoka: U-uhm... Sorry about the noise.
Yggdrasil: ...!
Lyria: Hehe. She's not mad. Actually she's happy that everyone is enjoying the nature here.
Honoka & Kotori: Phew...
Yggdrasil: ...
Lyria: She says the myconids who snuck in won't bother us anymore.
Kotori: Yggdrasil, thank you so much for your help.
Yggdrasil: ...!
Yggdrasil smiles at Kotori, then disappears with a wave of her hand.
Soon after, everyone gets to cleaning up the mess of bags and other items that had been thrown around before they finally relax.
Honoka: Ahh, sheesh, those mushroom things really scared me...
Kotori: But we got to meet the god of the forest because of them.
Honoka: That's true. Too bad Umi didn't get to meet her though.
Umi: Zzz...
Lyria: Hehe. Umi's out like a light.
Since the tidying up is done, they carry Umi into the tent, and everyone goes back to sleep.
Morning arrives.
Umi: Mmm! Is it time to wake up already?
Umi: Huh?
Umi stares in confusion at the fruit lying by her pillow.
Umi: An apple?
Umi: I don't remember packing this. Did Vyrn bring it?
Tilting her head to the side, Umi eventually grabs it and leaves the tent. She basks in the morning sun and cool mountain air as she steps out, then takes a bite of the apple.
Umi: Hehe, how refreshing. We really came to a beautiful place.
Myconid: ...
Umi: Is that... a monster!
A big, mushroom-like thing stands a little ways away. Umi instinctively braces herself for an attack.
Myconid: ...
The big mushroom simply lays a wicker basket on the ground, bows its head vigorously a couple times, and runs away.
Umi: Uhm...
Picking the basket up, Umi sees it is filled with apples, probably of the same kind as the one she found by her pillow.
Umi: Was that where my apple came from?
Umi: Wait! Could it be... Was that the god of the forest?
Umi: Thank you very much.
Umi closes her eyes and thanks the forest for its blessing.
Vyrn: Yawn... Oh hey, Umi. You're up early. Did you sleep okay?
Umi: Good morning, Vyrn. I am perfectly rested and ready for a long climb.
Umi: Take a look at this though. We received some apples from the god of the forest.
Vyrn: Whoa! Are you serious! Yggdrasil's got some nice taste!
Umi: Indeed. We could not communicate through words, but I could tell the god is a wonderful being.
Vyrn: Hehe, looks like you got a warm welcome after all.
Umi: Yes! Now we can challenge the mountain without a shred of fear!
Umi: Honoka! Kotori! Lyria! (Captain)! It's time to get up and get dressed!
Honoka: Urgh... Dwessed?
Umi: If we leave now, we can make it to the top by noon! So get up, Honoka!
Kotori: Ahaha, Honoka's never been a morning person...
Lyria: Hehe. Yesterday was pretty tiring.
Vyrn: It sure was, but today's lookin' even worse. Are we really gonna make it by lunchtime?
Umi: Knowing when to give up is important but... I'd like to see how far we can get and save as much time as we can.
Kotori: I definitely can't wait to see the view that Honoka was talking about! I'm in!
Umi: Let's go, everyone! Commence the attack!
Awake Party: Yes!

Yeah!

Yes!
Honoka: Mkaaay...
Thus they continue their trek up.
Confident in the sights they'll see once they reach the goal Honoka has set for them, they push onward.
